Ken watched as Y/N came down to the beach with a young man dressed in a red and blue spandex costume. He had a baby face and was about 5'7. Who was he and why was he talking to his Y/N? Technically, Y/N wasn't his, but he would be once he saw him surf some tubular waves.

The platinum blonde haired Ken doll took a chance and licked his lips. "Hi, Y/N!"

Y/N turned to him and smiled as he waved. "Hi, Ken!"

Beach Ken walked towards Y/N after the introductions were made. He eyed the superhero-looking guy. "Who's this?"

"Ken, this is Spiderman Ken."

"Spiderman Ken–or is it Peter Parker? Or Tom Holland?" Y/N asked.

"No, Tom Holland is the guy who plays Spiderman. And he has a British accent. But I could give it a go, mate." Spiderman Ken joked in an accent.

Y/N chuckles as Ken gets instantly jealous. "Why is he here?"

"Mattel just released a new line of Marvel's Avengers Barbies and Kens. And pretty soon we'll have Captain America Ken. Winter Soldier Ken. Iron man Ken. Thor Ken. Hulk Ken. Even Eternal's Ken. He's my favorite."

Ken looks shocked. Great it was bad enough that he had to compete for Y/N's attention with Tourist Ken, but now superheroes too? This sucked.

He faked a smile and shook Spiderman Ken's hand. "Nice to meet you."

AITA for arguing with my mom over toys?

I (15) have ADHD and autism and my mom (65) knows but doesn't really believe it. So right now, my hyper fixation is spiderman and barbie. I'm like obsessed and I love looking out for cool toys or merch of them. I rarely ever ask if I can buy them- I don't have a job yet so I have to ask my parents, but when I do it's usually a no. Wich I'm not usually too upset about, I get it. I'm a bit bitter about it, given that when my brothers (18 and 19) ever ask for something my parents will get them it with no questions asked. Besides the point.

A while back, we where in target and I was looking in the toy isle and there are these spiderman figurines and they have ones of spot, Gwen, Peter and Miles. I was obsessed the moment I saw them and asked my mom if I could get Gwen cause she's my absolute favorite. And she said no because she already has all of them at home. She hadn't told me this before but i was excited cause she showed me photos and she had all four of the dolls along with the new Margo Robbie and Ryan gosling barbie and ken dolls. The entire time she was making it out like she had gotten them for me, and I was super excited.

When we got home I waited for a bit, kinda thinking she'd bring them out and show me, but she never did so I eventually just asked "hey! Can I see the Spider-Man dolls?" And she said "no I've already put them away." Turns out she has all of them but she had no intention of ever giving me them and they're all in a bag in her closet. And so I was upset and went down to my room and ended up having a good cry cus this isn't the first time she's done something like this.

Skip forward to today, we where at Walmart and I see the Spider-Man dolls and ask if I could get one and she said "no you already have them." So I said "no, you have them. You keep them in the closet, those aren't mine." She argued back saying that they would be worthless if we took them out. (She has no intention to sell them.) But it went like that and she ended up saying fine and letting me get Gwen. She also let me get one of those 5 dollar Barbies and a Tin of popcorn that was spiderverse themed cus again, hyper fixation.

When we where leaving the restraunt, she made a snide comment telling me she spends so much on me and how I'm so ungrateful. I always say thank you and I always ask before putting things in the cart and I take good care of the dolls I have.

Later today I heard her complaining to my dad (69 haha) about it and calling me a spoiled brat and now I'm worried that I'm just being a bad person and wondering if I'm actually an asshole.

when miles met you he though you were perfect. covered in pink head to toe—'they're like a doll straight out of the box...' he said breathlessly as he watched your hair seem to perfectly fall back into place despite the pink mask that covered your identity.

'that's because i am one~' you responded and he swore he saw a colorful background of hearts and flowers appear behind you.

you and miles are total opposites, one of you live a a life of imperfection and flaws—from finding out your uncle tried to kill you to be known as the anomaly amongst all the spider people & be called a mistake in-front of his friends just to find out they knew all along—and the other only has perfect days everyday.

his parents love you! at first they were a little iffy, you wore all pink and had a big hair due. "the bigger hair, the more secrets!" rio would say as she tried to persuade him to go after someone else, someone who could speak spanish.

jeff thought you were a gold digger (even though miles had no gold whatsoever), and tried to say you're a bad influence but now he views you like his own daughter (both of them do!).

when it's major holidays (valentines day, christmas, national barbie day ect.) mile likes to get/make you something. last valentines he got you this big spiderman plush that you keep on your bed no matter how much it contrasts with your dream house because he got it for you.

your gifts fall a little flat because none of the kens fashion packs really fit miles and none of your worlds art supplies are actually real so instead you always take him to barbie land for a day just so you two can do fun things together like beach and have a choreographed dance party.

he loves barbie land trust me but he dose get a little jealous. some of the kens there really like you and he feels like he kind of has to try a little more to get your attention because they keep trying to show off.

speaking of ken you have one and he feels a little insecure whenever he's around even though he knows you don't like ken like that. "you're literally made for each other." he says and you can't really debate that because it is true to an extent but you always reassure him that you love only him.

"i may be made for ken but ken isn't made for what i need like you are." you bring both your hands down to his and hold it tight. "please don't think less of yourself because of ken's, they're not who i like, you are."

speaking of jealousy

sometimes he gets jealous of you ngl. he wants to live in a world where you can just float from your roof to your pink cadillac, fight crime and still make time for the mall, the beach and girls night every night.

when he comes to you visibly upset about the things he goes through—his dad, school, his villians, his friends he tells you all about hoe he wishes his world was easy like yours.

you however tell him that his dimension isn't so bad—going to birthday parties, to see children and the elderly smile, watching the smiling faces as spider saves new york again—"your worlds amazing, you just think it's bad because thats all you know." you always tell him as you hug him from behind. miles always seemed to agree as he would quiet down after that "yeah i guess it ain't so bad..."

when you're in his world he practically holds your hand like someone is going to steal him from you. he gets nervous because even though he's spiderman he has no idea what he's gonna do if someone cat calls you or trys to slap your ass. especially in new york like what if they shoot him yk???

when you're with him you always wear things like like this[the green ones]or this [the yellow one] and he always gives you the best compliments, sometimes if you wear a dress he peaks at your butt a little when you walk ahead of him but he tries to be respectful!! his mother would tear him up if she found out he wasn't.

when you found out a way to make that peice of plastic of a phone to actually work you made him open up a instagram for you now u just post pictures and close the not knowing the evil that lurks (misogynists)

his nicknames for you are bonita and carriño (im a miles wouldn't say that (mamas) believer😼) and sometimes he calls you bella but he reserves it for when you take his breath away (when ever u invite him to barbie land galas every other week)

your terms are a little outdated because of the time period you were 'made' in but you call him things like darling, sugar and dear but you've started adding sweetheart, baby and honey to your selection after he joked that you sound like a grandma one time☹️

your cannon event

entering your second/third year of being spider-barbie things got difficult in barbie world. [after the events of the barbie movie] you suddenly got villains—two deranged doctors, and even your own ken. not only did they seem to come back just to get revenge but they also get more and more difficult to defeat.

it started with a glitter shortage and now you've had to fight your ken who's become a venom variant. your ken was jealous that you were spider-barbie while he was just a variant of news reporter ken and he tried to become spiderman himself by infecting himself with some mysterious substance.

now the two of you are fighting in a burning building.

"ken stop this isn't you!" you dodge his heavy punches. it was getting super hot and the building was about to collapse. the both of you are surrounded the flames. "ken please stop this.." you tried to reason with him but a strong inky black hand wrapped around your throat.

your pink lenses were broken—you were feeling light headed now snd the fire was making it worse. "please..." a tear rolled from your face to venoms as you started to see stars surround your vision. you tried to kick your feet to get him to stop it but it only met with the hard, unmoving mass of venom.

one by one the ceiling started to fall in and venom could only laugh as he saw you struggling. venoms long tongue came out of his mouth and his spikey teeth started to retract as he inched closer to your head. he was going to eat you.

by a miracle a burning beam narrowly missed you and fell on him. gasping as you fell on your back narrowly missing the fire you turned to the inky black figure. "ken!?" limping to him you saw your other half struggling under the beam. "(name)....?"

"i'll save you!" you put your webs on the burning beam you tried your best to move it. you were too weak. crying you put your other web on it, struggling to move the object.

"(name), go on without me..." kens voice wavered as he searched for your hidden eyes. the inky black substance of venom seemed to slip off of him like water. "but i need you!" you reached for kens face only as more support beams fell from the ceiling.

hearing footsteps you turned around, there was a cop in the doorway if the wear-house, holding the black pistol to you, you had no choice but to leave, no one knows you're spider-barbie.

you don't know this but your universe and everyone else's is heavily connected through the toy line (like in the movie) so your line of toys was very effected by your cannon event

theres mattel branded action figures when you're crying holding kens picture, theres toys where you're called 'depressed spider-barbie' and they're even selling play-sets where your dream house is in disarray

when miles found out he had to call you but they went unanswered. you've been m.i.a for almost three days, you haven't answered any of the texts messages or calls that your friends sent you and they knew someone had to reach you because the your toy products we're getting sadder by the hour.

crying into the spider-man plush that miles had given you. hugging yourself you didn't notice miles come through the portal—"(name) are you okay?" he put his hand on your waist as he sat on the edge of your bed. he knew you weren't.

you were wearing a shirt took from him and you hair and makeup weren't even done. "miles i.." you looked into his eyes, his brown irises full of worry. he brought his hand to your face as a way to soothe you but he's not good at this like he wants to be.

"it's nothing." you said as you turned your head to wipe the tears off your face. "please don't act like that bonita.." you knew you shouldn't do this to him—but you aren't made for this and neither is he. "i had my event today." was all you could muster before you cried into him. "i know i know..." he said as he rubbed your back.

he tries his best to get you away from barbie land for a bit. gwen, hobie and pavitr handle the crime while you recover.

he brought you to his home and had to beg his parents to lets you sleep in his room, in him bed with him, and at first rio almost hit the back of his head with such a ridiculous question

but then she saw how broken you looked. "jeff this is serious their makeup and hair aren't done.." they caved but he had to keep the door open which he had no problem with.

he distracts you with playing video games, or going out to festivals and carnivals just to clear your head.

it took a week for you to feel better enough to go back to barbie land and when you left your toys changed to something different.

"spider-barbie has a new boyfriend!" news articles were everywhere—imagine miles' surprise when he saw him in his spiderman suit carrying you through barbie land. they named him ken carson and made him dominican but he'll take it.

So I have another Spidersona idea,,,it's another crossover thingy but this time it's Barbie. I raise you...

Spider-Ken

I might try to create a design at some point but until then, I'm dropping some hcs here:

He's the Spiderman of Earth-2118295 (the dimension where Barbieland and the Real World exist).

Was created by a Mattel employee who got by a spider while working on doll concepts and became inspired, wanting to pitch the idea of a "superhero" Ken to boost sales.

Unfortunately it was shortlived, so there's only one Spider-Ken in all of Barbieland. But he doesn't mind it.

Has all the powers of a typical Spiderman, although his webs are made of silly string (but are still just as strong).

He prefers jumping from building to building, almost "flying" in a sense.

While there's no actual crime going on in Barbieland, he often rescues fellow dolls from troubling situations (ie getting injured or saving their cat that got stuck in a tree).

He's happily married to the Barbie Mary Jane doll, calling her MJ or "my Barbie".

Every doll in Barbieland has attended their wedding.

He taught Simu!Ken how to do backflips.

Ryan!Ken is lowkey jealous of his stunts (and how he's got the "coolest" job as a superhero while all he has is beach).

He's friends with Weird Barbie and looks out for her and all the other misunderstood/discontinued dolls, having a secret base near her mansion.

His costume is all he has. Nobody knows what he looks like under the mask.

He's part of Spider Society, usually hanging out with LEGO Spiderman or Spider Plushie (as well as other Spiders who are based off of toys) but otherwise doesn't visit the HQ in Miguel's dimension a whole lot.

Mostly because he keeps calling everyone there "Ken" or "Barbie" in a place where he's the only Ken for once.

Miguel insists he just says "Hey, Spidey".

His canon (or Kenon) event would probably be the whole Kendom takeover and him witnessing the War™ between his fellow Kens (which he tried to stop without much success).

It rly made him question whether he's capable of protecting anyone at all, but Barbie!MJ lifted his spirits back up soon enough.

Both Barbie and Across the Spiderverse being THE summer movies. Both films exploring new places and experiences and alternate versions of yourself and being queer coded and empowering to all kinds of people. And allowing the protagonists to choose their identity, to own it no matter how it originally manifests and how hard they had to fight for it.

since i like to project onto people (and because I just saw the barbie movie and it was fantastic)--

spider-kids doll collecting headcanons post time (brands, do they play with them, and other stuff)

miles: bratz and barbie collector, but likes Bratz the best. probably also has a dreamhouse that his dolls all live in. does actually play with his dolls sometimes and makes up insane/unhinged stories to cope with being spiderman. Just to distract. stand-in for Dok Ock (redressed Girlz Really Rock Cloe) gets her shit clocked a LOTTTTTTTTT by Tokyo a Go Go Sasha. He's sort of interested in doll repainting, but worries a bit abt wrecking the doll permanently. Esp with his Bratz collection, he almost had to sell a kidney for TAGG Sasha. He's been practicing with the cheap ten dollar Barbies you can buy in Wal-Mart, but he still feels kinda bad. Ganke keeps good watch over his school collection when he has to go be Spider-Man tho. They have an Understanding- Miles watches the Funko Pops when Ganke is at coding conventions, and Ganke watches the dawls when Miles has to fight Green Goblin.

gwen: barbie and monster high collector. just starting out so the collection's not really that big. however, she has all the movies torrented on her computer and watches them when she can't fall asleep. DEFINETELY plays with her dolls too, like has an entire running soap opera going with them that's getting more and more complicated-- toralei is beach ken's bastard daughter that is trying to find the gold that creepover draculaura hid with the help of I Can Be A Mars Explorer barbie, and it only gets weirder from there. Her dad is baffled and confused by it, but she doesn't actually mind (in fact it might be the point). also, a little while after she restarted active collecting, miles gets a text at two am apologizing profusely for opening that collectible because her dad came in to clean her room and took Sweet 1600 Draculaura out of the box "as a treat" and THE TIES AREN'T GOING BACK IN

hobie: refuses to participate in the toxic consumerist nature that this hobby promotes while toy companies dump toxins into the air and kill our crops, while working in tandem with the horrifically abusive beauty industry to promote disgustingly unhealthy body standards to AFAB individuals. does hit the locally owned thrift store on occasion. does sleep with what he has all piled in his sleeping bag like a lil burrito. does carry his favorite around with him in his guitar case. as a little treat. doesn't discriminate with brands, his current favorite is a knockoff of monster high that nobody but him treasures. He jumpscares Miguel with her half zombie-fied face every five seconds and has her play peek-a-boo with Mayday. Peter B finds it funny, Miguel does not lol

pavitr: collects exclusively old and really obscure lines that nobody has ever heard of. Like he can give you a minute description of a random brand that you've never even heard of that lasted for like five minutes in the nineties before flaming out into the discount stores and then pull out their nib AND oob versions. all while saying "oh yeah, im not really into collecting that stuff. it takes up so much space, bro." He's still searching for one but pretends he isn't. also plays with them, along with Gayatri, and their stories are just the cutest sweetest things ever. like they're still batshit insane, don't get me wrong, the climaxes are always massive dance offs that involve the whole collection. but it always ends with their two dolls (Mystikats Azra for Gayatri and Tattoo Divas Shary for Pav) riding off into the sunset on one of the Struts dolls.

miles g (oh yeah that's right you though he'd be getting out of this): also bratz and barbie, and also likes Bratz the best. Since he has (some) Prowler Bux money's (mostly) not an issue. (Please don't ask him abt the noises he made when the Felicia repro was confirmed). He also has a Dreamhouse where they live, however it's shoved into his closet and if you ask him abt it, he will deny it. His stories are even more unhinged and insane then Miles, and usually involve running away from cops (redressed Wild Life Safari Cloe) who are trying to interfere with the hero's (the new pretty n punk sasha's) vigilante business. Which is why Hobie likes to join him a lot. Also into doll repainting, but actually even less confident then Miles-- he can do an amazing Bratz lip but the eyes? Forget it. And rn they're too expensive to buy en masse, so..... hooray :)

(none of them, except for hobie, let mayday play with their dolls. hobie does it because he can fix their hair later and also he doesn't believe in property. the others are too spooked. except for maybe miles, he gives her the barbies he's transformed into Weird Barbies. Peter B finds it so cute he could scream, and Miguel agrees. He never SHOWS it but he agrees.)

The more I read these takes about the Barbie movie being "anti-men" and "feminist propaganda" (someone even called it like "anti-life" because of the opening montage of the girls breaking their baby dolls and relating it to abortion) makes me think about how we all need a basic understanding of art and media and its interpretation. Like, you don't even have to be a critic or a literary scholar for that, but analysing the way a piece of media wants to convey its message is so crucial in order to understand the creative substance (or sometimes the lack thereof) of it.

I remember being a kid (and a teenager) in the 2010s and wanting to understand the Marvel hype so bad. Everyone around me treated it like a cinematic, once-in-a-lifetime media wave you don't want to miss out on. I watched the movies with my brother and tried to get into the themes and the storytelling but something always felt like on-the-surface about them.

The only movie I really genuinely enjoyed as a piece of media from the MCU was Captain America: Civil War, probably. Because not only it posed vital questions about the nature of humanity (righteousness as a hamartia Vs conformity as a prison), but the Avengers' actions and both the central conflict and the antagonist being a metaphor of the rage and despair of the common man when the people in power(literally and figuratively) choose to put that power into full force without realizing its domino effect on the lives of common people, when ultimately no human life is above or below basic humanity, it just intrigued me the first time in the theatres and it still intrigues me today.

You can very much dismiss the themes of the movie as just Iron Man Vs Captain America Dick Measuring Contest and the movie just being a precursor for Tom Holland's Spiderman or Natasha Romanoff being reduced to a mediator between Tony and Steve, just like people are dismissing Barbie's existential crisis as a Karen Hissy Fit or the matriarchal structure of the Barbie Land as a "secret will" of "feminists" to push onto the real world or Ken's arc of self-acceptance is just "anti-men". Surface-level interpretation truly robs you of the joys of exploration of the facets of human nature and the nuances that the creative team puts behind a piece of media carefully for you to unravel.

Yes, people can derive various interpretation from the canon source, you don't have to run with the director or the writer's playbook in order to understand and enjoy a media, but the problem arises when such interpretations feel more like accusations rather than criticism. No art is perfect, no art exists to please everyone in the whole wide world. But if Marvel movies can be "progressive" with women literally just trying to fight for their place in a male-dominated world, why is Barbie "anti-men" for presenting a man who tries to do the same in a female-led society?

Yes, not everyone can relate to a feeling of loss of girlhood and innocence and existential dread and feelings of inadequacy ticking in your head like a time bomb, but it's a theme that's rarely explored in mainstream media and the reason Barbie worked so tremendously for so many people because it tapped into an unresolved, unraveled part of so many people's identities and let them have positive realisations about themselves. And even if the message didn't spoke to you on a personal level, it's okay to let it slide away from your periphery and don't bother with it. Hell knows I've been doing the same with the MCU since the last decade or so, it's not that hard.
