Okay you do not understand how seen butterfly soup made me feel as a Tamilan. We get barely any representation in Western media, and a lot of kollywood/bollywood dubs cast light-skinned actors to play characters (also there isn’t much stuff about teenagers in kollywood). But then there’s butterfly soup, a video game no less, and it has one of their main character as a Tamilan. And she speaks tamil and she looks like me and sure, we may not be the exact same person but god does she make me feel so represented and so valid and so deserving of it. We need more representation of South Asians - and not just Indians who speak Hindi. I’m talking about those from Sri Lanka and Gujarat and Karnataka and Kerela and Tamil Nadu. I’m talking about all those South Asians who have to cling onto representation of North Indians when their South Indian culture is so very different. I’m talking about the people who don’t actually understand the Punjabi or Hindi spoken in the TV show or movie even though their South Asain. I’m talking about the people who have only ever eaten pani puri like twice in their life. I’m talking about the people who haven’t watched Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham but have seen Bahubali in it’s original language of Telegu. I love and will always respect and be grateful and proud of South Asian representation but it’s time to start branching out. It’s time to look at all the different cultures and regions and people of South Asia, and not just say “Oh we’ve put in a character that’s speaks Hindi, South Asian representation done.” It’s the 21st century and South Asians are tired of being generalised and not getting the representation they deserve. I shouldn’t have to cling onto a video game to feel seen. I shouldn’t have to dig and search to find something that shows South Asians exist in Western Spaces. It should be there, waiting for me.

I wanted to put this here on tumblr too. there were many famines during british rule since most of our land was being used to grow crops for the british raj. this meant most of the food and other resources kerala had were not being given to its people, and we suffered for it. it disturbs me to think that this history was so thoroughly wiped out that most people think kerala was one of the few places that was almost entirely unscathed during british rule.
also, I would not have looked into this history if someone had not pointed out a recent study claiming that the reason type-2 diabetes is so common in south and centra asia could be because of the famines during colonization. since my family has a history of type-2, it led to me finding out about this. I would never have known otherwise since most history sources don't mention kerala whenever they talk about famines in india.

Today, When I was scrolling through some of the architectural projects online, I came across one Simple & ordinary project from Kerela based practice. When I saw the project, on very first instinct it was simple but after some time it made sense to me because of the pause. Pause which I gave to the project.
It is a very small residence in a very rich & wild landscape totally supporting the architecture. The building is monochrome with whites and browns on the facade. Fenestrations are very traditional and is the major flex of the architecture which accounts for a pause to absorb the building.
In my belief, there is a humbling and pristine quality of these traditional windows which makes the architecture more substantial. This humility lacks in architecture, especially the architecture of urban. I would have never imagined this proposal as it is now because I don't know the real sense of humility and how to show that in my work.
I'm not mindful about the core of the project as how it was contextualise and what was the resistivity in the process of making it Or the humility is deliberate or it just exist because the actions were truthful.

A few more from the India trip. I definitely feel a little dusty with the camera, but I’m glad that I got a few photos that I enjoy.
