what’s your favorite number

this is a really hard question. Its probably 2, since it makes for an amazing base and is just generally very useful, like, when you have a+a, which is common, that turns into 2a. It's also the successor to 1, making it the first number thats not just defined directly by axioms like 0 and 1 and rather a consequence.

2 is also aesthetically fun, the way it swoops at the top and then sits on a sturdy base, with both a round and a sharp corner. So, that's my answer,

But! If we go further we can find lots of other numbers I also love. 6 is a really nice number because its small but not "weird" in any immediate way. It's not an identity, it's not prime, it's not a square, etc. If you have a formula or something and you want to check it with a number 6 usually works without running into common edge cases.

Leaving the Naturals, -1 is an amazing integer. Really useful for anything that alternates, I love the roots of unity and it's the first nontrivial of those. All the roots of unity are pretty amazing tho, highly recommend.

Rising further we get to the Rationals, which are honestly kinda boring imo. Shoutout to ½ for being the reciprocal of 2 but that's it.

Now, shit is gonna get Real. The Reals are an amazing set, lots of useful properties, a really cool field (the Rationals are also a field but they suck so the Reals get to be the cool field). The Reals contain just about every number you normally interact with, including all-time highs such as pi or e. All algebraic and transcendental numbers are in here, including my favourite, sqrt(2). The square root of 2 is real cool. It's fun geometrically, being a factor of the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle where the legs are the same length. It's cool algebraically as being the easiest to introduce number thats real but not rational, I have fond childhood memories of learning that the Reals are Dedekind complete (of course that word was only introduced in high school) with this beautiful number as the example. It's reciprocal is also really cool and useful. sqrt(2) even has its own Wikipedia article.

Leaving behind the Reals, the Complex Numbers are just fun as a category. No longer ordered, basically acting as if R² was a field, just really fun. I don't really have a favourite complex number but I am a sucker for units for i gets nominated as my favourite here. All complex numbers are really cool. Shoutout to |0> and |1> (ket-zero and ket-one) for being cool in quantum computing and being vectors in a space using the field of the complex numbers.

here ye here ye! come one come all to hear about my Favorite Fics of 2023! A surprising number of these aren't even complete, but isn't that just how the cookie crumbles sometimes. I highly recommend all of these, completed or not! Most are Gentlebeard, but the last two are little wildcards! Fics that had their word count marked with an asterisk are incomplete.

Once Upon a Summer in San Francisco by samwise | E | 209k*

A charming and thrilling AU set in San Francisco in 1978. Ed, a career drug dealer, meets Stede during a music festival after getting drugged by his office co-workers. They become intertwined in a relationship that puts both of them in new territory. I think my favorite part of this fic is all of the music and fashion references, as well as how all the crew members (and others!) are woven into the story. All the side relationships are adorable, and Stede and Mary have an ADORABLE friendship that I can't get enough of.

2. In Favor With Their Stars by @mxmollusca | M | ~62k

This fic was my introduction to sci-fi AUs in this fandom! It's a gripping story that follows Ed, an engineer who finds himself awoken early from cryostasis on an "interplanetary research vessel" travelling to Jupiter's moon, Europa. Ed soon discovers that the ship's artificial intelligence, STE/DE, is likely sentient. Chaos and love ensues as they spend several months together, flying through the void. This story is uniquely multi-media, told through prose, code, poetry, audio transcripts, and even music!

3. Famine and Feast by zemph147 (@gaypiratebrainrot) | E | ~19k

This fic is a HILARIOUS and fascinating modern AU where Ed is the owner and head chef of his fine dining restaurant, Blackbeard. He finds himself full of renewed passion for his craft after tasting the menu of The Revenge, a new food truck owned by one Stede Bonnet. As someone who works in a kitchen and LOVES any media about food, this fic really indulged me. The description of every dish had my mouth watering!

4. Kalahari Down by @oatmilktruther | E | 31k*

Kalahari Down is a wild and stylized fic, written from Ed's pov as a 19 year old rancher working in Montana on Bonnet Ranch. When Stede returns home from boarding school, the two boys find themselves whipped up into a Brokeback Mountain-esque romance. However, canon-typical miscommunications make their journey a rocky one. This fic is INSANE in the way that it's written, and absolutely must be read in a southern accent (or at least, that's how I have to read it in my head :3). The series is smartly inspired by the eponymous album by Orville Peck, Bronco. Each chapter takes the name of a song written by him, and the vibes certainly shine through. It's hard to say since it's yet to be completed, but it's certainly lining up to be one of my favorite ofmd fics of all time.

5. Fine Wires by Nospaceforjack, ThePirateRoo | E | ~114k

Set in London, 1887, this fic follows the meeting of Blackbeard, the infamous burglar, and The Gentleman Thief, new to a life of crime. The two men are quickly charmed by each other, but their relationship becomes caught in the clutches of the law chasing them as well as Stede's need to prove himself. This story is charming in aesthetic, originally an AMAU, and is told through collages of images, letters, composed ambient music, as well as prose. The setting really comes to life with the mixture of multimedia content along with amazing description.

6. Liquid Gold by @perkynurples | M | ~79k

This is another modern AU that was originally an SMAU! Stede returns to his family's summer home in following his divorce from Mary in an attempt to reconnect with himself. He takes to beekeeping, a hobby his mother enjoyed in his youth, and it soon connects him to resident beekeeper, Edward Teach. They become swept into a honey sweet relationship where they uncover more mysteries than they ever expected to. This fic is ADORABLE as much as it is captivating, and as a beekeeper myself, this fic holds a special place in my heart <3

7. not pickles by smallestchurch | E | ~83k

Yay another modern AU! This one is an Ed pov, and really focuses on Ed's progression through his mental health struggles and such. Ed and Stede live in the same apartment building, and Ed finds himself pulled into Stede's adorable family, whether he likes it or not (he does). There's plenty of adorable Alma/Louis content in this one, and Ed is no surprise GREAT with kids. It's heartwarming, gut-wrenching, and tear-jerking all in one! Total triple threat.

8. the knife and the throat by darcylindbergh (@forpiratereasons) | E | ~35k*

This is a post-s1 canon fix-it fic that is just SWARMING with all kinds of delicious angst. After Stede fights to reunite with Ed, he finds that healing their relationship won't be nearly as easy as the gut wound he's given when he tries. This fic alternates pov, but I'm especially entranced by the way Ed is written in particular. This fic hasn't been updated in a while, but the author told me that they hope to complete it eventually! Finished or not, it's a great read.

9. if i was pure, you know i would by bitethehands | E | ~2k

Dead Dove: Do Not Eat! This fic is a delicious body horror one-shot where Izzy is immortal and Kraken era Blackbeard finds that *fascinating.* It's gruesome and horrifying and so well-written.

10. bend over, doll (it's all a game) by Sweveris | E | ~91k

Modern AU with a sick twist! Edward is the leader of a crime ring and married to Stede Bonnet. Ed is quick to discover that his husband is less than faithful, but decides to play along for a while, just to see where it goes. Everyone in this fic is TERRIBLE and it's AMAZING. I usually hate fics with Calico Jack in them, but somehow this one coaxed me into reading full chapters from his pov. There's also some really yummy Stizzy content that simmers throughout.

Hi, thanks for your question! It's actually a bit of the opposite that you might expect: while there aren't necessarily hard-set "expectations" for women shaving those areas, per se (like no one's going to be really surprised or repulsed if a person chooses not to shave), it's more common in lower-class people in the city due to the presence of public and communal bathhouses--that kind of grooming is often incorporated in the bathing rituals there in separate rooms before entering the baths, so it's pretty normalized. This goes for Diminished and Norm folk alike!

Noble women don't actually shave that much because their attire covers up so much more of their bodies in layers than working-class women, so no one would typically ever notice the difference unless--like Lavinet--the nobles have occasions to wear more informal, exposing clothing like riding gear or battle tunics. While there is more of a "standard" for them to shave their underarm hair and whatnot, they don't actually have to do it as often unless they have a reason to believe a paramour is likely to see them naked, at which point they typically use sugaring/depilatory creams or have servants attend to it in their saunas: they almost never use a razor to shave themselves.

In rural parts of the Continent, it's not as common. Shaving for both male-presenting and female-presenting people tends to be more fastidiously attended to in Ket and Elven cultures as part of their aesthetic/hygienic cultural ideals, while the Hunter culture doesn't care as much at all and the Mages are kind of a mixed bag: since their garb typically consists of a lot of heavy, elaborate robes, they typically only bother when they want to hook up or impress someone, but otherwise there wouldn't be much occasion to notice whether they shaved or not, so it tends to happen more as a personal preference thing than a social expectation. While he was washing the dishes and sneak up behind him and wrapped your hands around his waist, he didn't got scared cuz he knew it was you so he just smiled and continued. You laued your head on his shoulder and closed your eyes while enjoying his scent "Im almost done Jagi" he said in soft tone and you smiled.

- after he was done both of you went to the living room to admire the Christmas tree you decorated earlier today

With that both if you walked to the upstairs area and into the bathroom.

Hyunjin filled bathtub with water and threw few Rose pattels in with bubbles (🤭), he light up few candles just for the aesthetic (they are not scented), he then filled up two glasses with wine that he prepared later that day when you were on the phone, and lastly he dimmed the lights down.

When your shirt was off he took his off as well and wrapped his arms around your waist, you sighed at the sudden touch and placed the back of your head on Hyunjin's shoulder, his warm arms in contact eith your warm skin was all you needed to feel complete. As he held you like that he started whispering in your ear " I could stay like this forever" after saying that he gave you small kiss behind your ear before whispering again "you drive me crazy" with that he gently bit your ear which made you moan softly. He then started kissing down your jaw and then diwn your neck making sure he kissed every inch of it, while he did that his hand slowly made its way to your shorts and untied them and began sliding them off while he moved and started giving you shoulder kisses. You were in heaven, you felt so good, maybe it was the the heat in the bathroom from warm water and candles, maybe it was the smell if roses mixed with the heat or maybe it was just Hyunjin's voice and sweet words he described you with.

— born in rochdale, raised in manchester. his family ran the market stool that sells knock-off adidas trainers fake rollex watches (u kno the one. or is this just a british thing?) so he worked on that quite a lot as a kid, this little 10 year old boy in a bucket hat and a tracksuit shouting from his market stool. all of his childhood birthday parties were at the local boozer so the parents could get pissed while the kids ran around throwing pool balls at each other. 

— there wasn’t much stability in his childhood. they were constantly being chucked out of whatever flat they were renting. one of his goals for coming on love island is to win a lot of money so he can buy his mum a house bcos he’s fed up of seeing her live in absolute shitholes.

—  he was in and out the care system as well as juvenile detention a lot as a kid for petty crimes like larcency, public indecency, trespassing, graffiti. his mum was the most non-maternal mum ever and basically ran their home like an oliver twist workhouse bt he still loved her. came from a family of miscreants who were often in trouble with the law and as a result social services got involved and he was tossed about different foster families like a hot potato but he kept running back to his mum (mama's boy).

— this is really sad but i think a lot of the reason why he committed petty crimes was because when he was in the juvenile detention centre there was structure, and people checking in on him to make sure he hadn’t vanished, and he got regular meals, and he was kind of lacking those things at home…. the fridge was always empty, no one cared if he was in his room or out on the streets causing trouble…. in juvie he got a sense of family as fucked up as that sounds….. it’s also where he learned to fight 

— very working class roots, proud of this fact, and fucking hates the rich. is the type to grafiti a house in the posh neighbourhoods and cut their telephone wires with pliers because why not, they can just get their butler to fix it.  people at school would call his family  “ne’er-do-wells”, and as a result he spent most of his youth causing havoc on the streets because it was the only kind of identity he knew so he might as well live up to it. his brothers worked at the fun fairs and carnivals in the summer months. jude used to rollerblade around and steal candy flosses from the pier and rig the slot machines so that they’d spill out loads of coins for him. the archetypal lock-picking chaotic neutral rogue type.

 — constantly undermines his own intelligence and doesn’t really trust that he’s actually clever, despite the fact that he could have done well in school if he’d tried (and wasn’t constantly having to parent his younger siblings because as soon as the older ones reached 16 they were out of that house and into the world). he knows that people will see him and just assume he’s a dumb idiot so he’s kind of in a place where he makes people think that before they can even assume it, because that way he feels in control. is constantly saying he can’t read but in fact!! he can read. it just takes him a bit longer cos the words move around on the page he’s got dyslexia 

— never finished school. got a bus to london at sixteen years old with a skateboard, his best mate, a jar full of pennies and a digital camera. they couch surfed for ages and were in a lot of dodgy situations until jude got pretty involved in the industrial skate scene. then they just slept on sk8rbois sofas and in their dirty basements for a while until they had enough money to rent a flat. also super into parkour. when he wasn’t freerunning himself he took videos of the others n he built up a small following on youtube.

—  now works as a freelance photographer / content creator for VICE and other online journals. involved in a lot of zines. it’s a lot of effort and not much money so he also works as a runner on tv sets when ever tv or film shoots locally. he also does bar shifts here and there when he’s had a massive piss up and spent £100 buying shots and needs to get some money in before pay day. basically a jack-of-all-trades with 5 different jobs that he swaps like interchangeable hats and doesn’t correctly fill out his tax returns for.

— despite being lacking in maturity, jude’s kind of like, a caring if somewhat grumpy father figure. because his parents were never really around and him n his siblings had to look out for each other, he likes to make sure everyone’s eaten, and is always the first to offer up his bed or sofa if someone needs a place to stay. he climbs trees to help injured birds and has a rescue staffie with three legs, as well as two stray cats he’s loosely adopted because they always seemed hungry, and now he’s called them smokey n bandit. he likes animals more than people. 

— very physically fit. wants to run fast so he can overtake the bourgeoise when the zombies come. sporty soft jock himbo type and was always better with his body than he was with words. he’s learned to say more by not speaking. loves basketball. loves football n rugby. loves being in the gym mostly so he can watch hot gymshark influencer girls do their squats.

 — relationship wise, he tends to pine after one person for ages and fuck a load of people to get over them and not really treat the people very well who he fucks along the way in his process of coping with someone not wanting him back. can get a bit obsessive. a bit intense. a typical scorpio moon that way. if he’s all-in on you he’s loyal as fuck but it takes a lot for him to go all in. enjoys the will-they-won’t they and the thrill of the chase more than he enjoys being in a relationship.

— chews the inside of his cheek when he’s nervous or irritated. it’s a tick he’s had since youth, almost a way of biting his tongue. it used to give him terrible mouth ulcers. he’s also heavily avoidant when it comes to dealing with anything not chill n usually runs from it or gets blackout drunk. he definitely uses binge drinking as a coping mechanism.

— can be difficult to talk to and finds communicating what he actually feels hard at times like usually it'll come out as a different emotion. ppl in prev rps have said he's autistic bt idk if he is i dnt wanna diagnose without knowing enough.
