The Act of Killing (2012) - Filmmakers expose the horrifying mass executions of accused communists in Indonesia and those who are celebrated in their country for perpetrating the crime.

Tell Me Who I Am (2019) - When Alex loses his memory after a serious motorcycle accident, he trusts his twin Marcus to tell him about his past, but he later discovers that Marcus is hiding a dark family secret.

Paris Is Burning (1990) - This documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and their "house" culture, which provides a sense of community and support for the flamboyant and often socially shunned performers. Groups from each house compete in elaborate balls that take cues from the world of fashion. Also touching on issues of racism and poverty, the film features interviews with a number of renowned drag queens, including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Dorian Corey.

Kat watches Moon Knight

Okay, so with the encouragement of several people on here and the emotional support of my roommate, I have finally (in February 2024) started watching Moon Knight, a show whose basic concept scares the shit out of me.

Context: I had an adopted older brother with DID. Note that I said "had". That's past tense because life treated him so appallingly poorly that he died (horribly, in prison) when I was 19. Part of that abuse was enabled by pop-culture depictions of DID in the 1980s and 90s that convinced everyone who knew about his condition (including the court system) that he was a walking time bomb.

One of my earliest memories is of my brother as a young adult, playing Super Mario Bros with my toddler self. Another is of him patiently teaching me how to make friends with a large dog. I never met any of his alters, afaik; I was small and cute and safe for him to be himself with, so he probably didn't need them around me. He was a profoundly gentle man when he was allowed, and it hurt like hell to see him turned into a monster in movies and on TV. I've turned off a lot of "psychological thrillers" in sorrow and disgust.

Ironically, I loved Moon Knight comics as a kid in the 90s, BEFORE he was retconned to have DID circa the mid-2000s. Because those comics came out right after my brother died in 2002 and leaned HARD into making people with DID seem like violently unstable monsters (for reference, see the cover of Moon Knight: God and Country), I stopped reading them around 2008, when I couldn't take being poked in the trauma by a comfort character anymore.

But I do love Werewolf By Night, and there's been a lot of good fic mashing Jack up with Moon Knight without dehumanizing anyone, and several people have encouraged me to try the show. So this post will be a place for my thoughts as I try to work my way through with my Essential Editions in one hand and my memories of my brother in the other. I'll add to it as I watch.

If this entertains the Moon Knight fandom or provides useful fic reference, so be it. Just don't be jerks on my post.

Also, anyone who chooses to be shitty about my brother will be eaten by bears. I don't make the rules.

Episode 1

Okay, we open with Steven as our POV character, and he's...convinced he's a sleepwalker. All right, not terrible. Steven is now a bumbling nerd, which is probably an improvement; good luck making a billionaire playboy sympathetic in the 2020s. Jake would be the logical everyman POV from the comics, but I understand from fic that he's got a different role now. I'm confused about the accent, but it's only episode 1, and Steven clearly doesn't yet know who Khonshu is, or that Marc exists, so obviously there's a ways to go here. (Is Marc ... undercover inside Steven? Ugh, this is a trope I have seen and do not like.)

Did Marc kill Steven's fish? Did Khonshu kill Steven's fish? I'm baffled by the fish. Which is a nice break from the larger anxiety. I'm gonna try to worry more about the fish.

The bits with Steven losing time and finding himself in odd situations were distressingly close to the old tropes, but both of those happened to my brother, so I'm not going to bitch about them quite yet. I want to be as fair as I can.

Oh, hey, I recognize Harrow from the comics. What up, dude. How's the cult biz treating you?

The end of the episode, with the jackal thing chasing Steven into the bathroom, came RIGHT up to the line for me. I realized that what I was most afraid of was that the story would assign "good" and "bad" labels to the alters--make Steven the sweet, innocent one and Marc (or maybe Jake, I guess) the monstrous killer. The early flashes of Steven covered in blood didn't really help allay that anxiety. And now Marc is demanding that Steven let him have control in a pretty threatening manner. But so far, it seems like the contrast between Marc and Steven is one of competence--Marc is better at fighting and Steven is better at ... panicking? Unclear. At least Oscar Isaac is playing the protagonist, so his character(s) might remain sympathetic. Nobody has been monsterized quite yet.

I finished the episode with every muscle in my body locked up, waiting for the emotional punch in the face. But I did finish it, and I think I'm gonna try episode two.

THEORY TIME

So I think that Sol will save herself while Sun-jae will run around like a maniac looking for her like we've seen in the drama teaser. If translated properly, she says something along the line of "I know what to do/expect now"... maybe she can girlboss it✊🏼 fighting~🫠

Maybe there's going to be a confrontation between Sun-jae and killer dude, but I don't think he'll get a major head injury messing up his memory... I think past!Sol will come back at the hospital, and he'll go-- she won't recognize him-- and he'll leave, hurt by her words, and they'll grow apart (naturally...).

I think "forgetting" her will be a coping mechanism but also a way to hurt present!Sol (2023 timeline) in the same manner as past!Sol hurt him (in 2008). Otherwise, refusing to cast in a movie she's specifically directing would not be warranted. Someone might ask him a question about her, and he'll play the card of "miss who?" (preview narration) because it hurts less that way-- he might find it easier to cope with his broken heart if he acts like he doesn't have a first love publically.

I think he'll debate whether or not he should go to the bridge for the time capsule (Jan. 1st). Clearly, the movie issue and past!Sol's rejection would make him reluctant to go and get told off.

I think she'll arrive first and someone will be there... someone we don't want there. Something major will happen, but she'll go back in time a third time (as young adults, so university time for her) in order to save herself, or maybe Sun-jae (if he goes to the bridge-- he might sacrifice himself).

My bet is on the manager (he's hella sus) attempting to confront Sun-jae at the bridge because he still wants retire in this timeline?? maybe?? And Sol will be there first, he'll think she's the reason why he's quitting and attempt to do something... Sun-jae might intervene and die? possibly... however, that's a stretch I'm not willing to bet an organ on.

In Scout's living room, to the right of the couch and propped by the wall, there's a Pin-Up Girl mask, the character from The Strangers (2008)

The eyes and nose shape, down to the curl and even smaller wisp and parting are all identical.

It's a home invasion horror movie, where a trio of killers stake out and break into a house, keeping the couple inside captive before killing them.

Just an itty-bitty hint of events soon to come after its appearance.

Tsutomu Miyazaki, also referred to as “The Little Girl Murderer” or “The Otaku Murderer” was a ruthless Japanese serial killer that abducted and brutally murdered four girls between 1988 and 1989. Miyazaki was born with a birth deformity which caused him difficulties with his arms. Due to this, he was ostracized and mocked by his peers, thus developing into a loner.

Miyazaki found solace in fantasy comic books but this seemingly innocent interest soon turned deadly. Miyazaki eventually, unsatisfied with fantasy, began to watch and collect child pornography. On occasion, he would attend college tennis matches and take secretive photos of the players which he would use to masturbate later on and was once caught watching his little sister shower. As well as child abuse images, Miyazaki became obsessed with graphic horror movies; it was said that movie series “Guinea Pig″ was the influence for his brutal murders and that he re-enacted scenes from this movie with his helpless victims.

On 22 August, 1988, Miyazaki abducted his first victim, 4-year-old Mari Konno, whom had been playing at her friend’s house. He drove her to a secluded area and parked his car under a bridge. He strangled the little girl to death before photographing and sexually assaulting her corpse. He returned to her body a few weeks later and cut off her hands and feet; he later hid them in his cupboard. In a cruel twist, he burnt the rest of her body in a furnace and sent the ashes to her distraught family, along with a few of her teeth and photographs of her clothing.

The next victim was 7-year-old Masami Yoshizawa. Miyazaki offered the young girl a ride but instead of taking her to her requested destination, he took her to the same secluded area he took Mari Konno and strangled her to death before sexually assaulting her corpse, something that soon became common practice to Miyazaki.

4-year-old Erika Nanba was waking home from her friend’s house when she was abducted by Miyazaki. He forced her to remove her clothes before he took degrading photos of her. Like the other two before her, she was then strangled. The final murder occurred on 6 June, 1989, when Miyazaki convinced 5-year-old Ayako Nomoto to allow him to take photos of her. After sexually assaulting and killing her, Miyazaki returned to the corpse for the next two days and repeatedly had sex with the corpse; he also drank some of her blood and cannibalised her hands.

As if losing their children in such a horrific way wasn’t traumatic enough, Miyazaki would taunt the family members of the children he had so viciously killed: he would often call them over and over again but remain silent and would send gruesome letters and identifying items which made it evident they were from the killer. Miyazaki was finally apprehended on 23 July, 1989, after he was caught attempting to insert a zoom lens into a young girl.

He was chased by her father who alerted the authorities. They went on to search his house where the made the disturbing discovery of his morbid mementos which included graphic photos, videos, and remains of his victims. He was hanged on 17 June, 2008.
