Kat watches Moon Knight
Okay, so with the encouragement of several people on here and the emotional support of my roommate, I have finally (in February 2024) started watching Moon Knight, a show whose basic concept scares the shit out of me.
Context: I had an adopted older brother with DID. Note that I said "had". That's past tense because life treated him so appallingly poorly that he died (horribly, in prison) when I was 19. Part of that abuse was enabled by pop-culture depictions of DID in the 1980s and 90s that convinced everyone who knew about his condition (including the court system) that he was a walking time bomb.
One of my earliest memories is of my brother as a young adult, playing Super Mario Bros with my toddler self. Another is of him patiently teaching me how to make friends with a large dog. I never met any of his alters, afaik; I was small and cute and safe for him to be himself with, so he probably didn't need them around me. He was a profoundly gentle man when he was allowed, and it hurt like hell to see him turned into a monster in movies and on TV. I've turned off a lot of "psychological thrillers" in sorrow and disgust.
Ironically, I loved Moon Knight comics as a kid in the 90s, BEFORE he was retconned to have DID circa the mid-2000s. Because those comics came out right after my brother died in 2002 and leaned HARD into making people with DID seem like violently unstable monsters (for reference, see the cover of Moon Knight: God and Country), I stopped reading them around 2008, when I couldn't take being poked in the trauma by a comfort character anymore.
But I do love Werewolf By Night, and there's been a lot of good fic mashing Jack up with Moon Knight without dehumanizing anyone, and several people have encouraged me to try the show. So this post will be a place for my thoughts as I try to work my way through with my Essential Editions in one hand and my memories of my brother in the other. I'll add to it as I watch.
If this entertains the Moon Knight fandom or provides useful fic reference, so be it. Just don't be jerks on my post.
Also, anyone who chooses to be shitty about my brother will be eaten by bears. I don't make the rules.
Episode 1
Okay, we open with Steven as our POV character, and he's...convinced he's a sleepwalker. All right, not terrible. Steven is now a bumbling nerd, which is probably an improvement; good luck making a billionaire playboy sympathetic in the 2020s. Jake would be the logical everyman POV from the comics, but I understand from fic that he's got a different role now. I'm confused about the accent, but it's only episode 1, and Steven clearly doesn't yet know who Khonshu is, or that Marc exists, so obviously there's a ways to go here. (Is Marc ... undercover inside Steven? Ugh, this is a trope I have seen and do not like.)
Did Marc kill Steven's fish? Did Khonshu kill Steven's fish? I'm baffled by the fish. Which is a nice break from the larger anxiety. I'm gonna try to worry more about the fish.
The bits with Steven losing time and finding himself in odd situations were distressingly close to the old tropes, but both of those happened to my brother, so I'm not going to bitch about them quite yet. I want to be as fair as I can.
Oh, hey, I recognize Harrow from the comics. What up, dude. How's the cult biz treating you?
The end of the episode, with the jackal thing chasing Steven into the bathroom, came RIGHT up to the line for me. I realized that what I was most afraid of was that the story would assign "good" and "bad" labels to the alters--make Steven the sweet, innocent one and Marc (or maybe Jake, I guess) the monstrous killer. The early flashes of Steven covered in blood didn't really help allay that anxiety. And now Marc is demanding that Steven let him have control in a pretty threatening manner. But so far, it seems like the contrast between Marc and Steven is one of competence--Marc is better at fighting and Steven is better at ... panicking? Unclear. At least Oscar Isaac is playing the protagonist, so his character(s) might remain sympathetic. Nobody has been monsterized quite yet.
I finished the episode with every muscle in my body locked up, waiting for the emotional punch in the face. But I did finish it, and I think I'm gonna try episode two.

MOON KNIGHT MASTERLIST | ALL MASTERLISTS
Tumblr media
if there’s one thing the boys all have in common, it’s that they’re all cat people.
steven thinks they’re particularly cute, and has always liked the idea of having a cat curled up beside him as he reads.
jake got attacked by a dog during a mission once and has been wary of them ever since.
marc just appreciates their independence—the fact that their trust needs to be earned with a little more effort, a little more patience.
(you give him this look when he says that, and steven snorts from inside their headspace. marc pointedly ignores you both.)
they’ve always wanted a cat, but the logistics of it never worked out given their vigilante schedule.
getting someone to drop by and feed gus the ii and his friend once a day? no problem. but leaving a cat at the flat? even if it were in the care of one of their neighbours, the idea makes them uneasy.
but then they met you. and since you’ve moved in with them, the opportunity has become much, much more feasible.
steven often looks through listings from the nearby adoption centres, cooing over the cats they have available.
steven lets out the most precious little gasp, excitement illuminated by his laptop, and you can’t help but lean over to see what he’s looking at. a picture of a scrawny-looking shorthair with a pronounced snout is pulled up on the screen.
“his name is scream,” steven supplies, utterly enamoured.
“scream,” you repeat, and he nods. “well, the flat does have good soundproofing.”
he scrolls down some more and almost instantly, there’s a fluffy mess lounging on the back of a couch that catches your eye. your hand falls on steven’s to stop him from going down any further.
“kit kat!” you take control of the trackpad to circle kit kat’s adorable face. steven shakes his head, raising an eyebrow.
“oh, but does kit kat hold a candle to margarine?” margarine is a kitten so small that she looks like she’d immediately get lost in the mess of books and knickknacks strewn about the apartment.
steven’s posed an impossible question. you pout a little. “I want both.”
he sighs. “me too, love.”
jake sends you a picture of every single cat he spots on the street. they vary in quality—some are so close that you can count each whisker while others are nothing more than a fuzzy blob in the night.
the utter quantity is enviable. you have half a mind to think that they just spend their entire night patrol looking for cats around the city.
that said, if you ask, “did you get to pet it?” the answer is almost always no.
for all of yours and steven’s window adopting online, marc is the one who ends up bringing a cat home.
not even an hour after marc left to patrol, you stir awake to the sound of the front door banging against the adjacent wall. your boyfriend’s quiet voice hisses, “shit.”
“marc?” you yawn, rubbing your eyes as you sit up. usually, he’s mum as a mouse when he comes back, cautious not to disturb you. you squint at him in the dark. “are you okay?”
“’m fine.” his silhouette moves into the living room, and one of the softer lamps is clicked on. “just—”
a sharp little mrow interrupts him, and you both fall silent as it rings out in the flat. was… was that—?
mreo-o-o-ow!
“marc!” you throw the blankets to the side as you jump out of bed, scurrying so fast to his side that you nearly trip over your own feet.
he’s still in the suit, mask and hood retracted, and held gingerly in his gloved hands is a dirty bundle of orange fur. the little guy is dwarfed against marc’s broad chest; narrowed green eyes watch your movements suspiciously. you bring your hand up to let the kitten sniff you, but marc leans away. “careful—he’s a bit touchy.”
“you’re holding him fine,” you point out, and he snorts.
“hardly.” as if on cue, the kitten lets out another piercing cry, squirming and scratching so fiercely that you’re sure it would leave some marks if not for the suit. marc grimaces as he tries to maintain his grip without hurting him, but his eyes widen when you sigh endearingly. “oh, no, don’t you dare—”
“can we keep him?”
while marc knows that he can’t say no to you for very long—a fact that’s going to be the end of him someday, he swears—he does effectively put that conversation on hold until the kitten can see a veterinarian in the morning.
trying to convince you to go back to sleep is a lost cause. you’ve brought home a stray kitten, marc—there’s no way you’re leaving him to try and figure out what to do on his own.
the commotion also wakes up steven and jake. you can only hear marc’s side of the conversation, but it’s clear that they’re as excited as you are for your new guest.
marc’s staring down the mirror, brow furrowed at whatever his alters are telling him through the reflection. the kitten is nonplussed by the argument happening over its head, only sinking further into marc’s arms.
“no, we can’t keep him—”
“aw, come on!” you interject. marc, unable to do anything that could bring you down when there’s that much excitement in your voice, only responds with a restless noise.
“he could already have an owner somewhere,” he reasons. one of them must offer to take over, because his mouth twists into a stubborn scowl soon after. “I’m fine.”
getting marc to take care of himself is a herculean feat, so you switch tactics, placing a hand on his shoulder. “I think they just wanna meet the kitty.”
still, he bristles, and holds the kitten almost protectively against his chest. “the meet and greet can happen after we figure out what we’re doing.”
he steps away from the mirror then, and you pump your fist when his back is turned.
there’s a chance.
it’s the most intense googling research session you’ve ever been a part of.
marc gets most of the grime off its fur with a damp cloth, handling the kitten so gently that it might as well be made of glass. he still won’t let you touch it—too worried that it’ll hurt you somehow.
(you go along with it because yeah, if it does bite you, there’s no way marc’s letting you guys keep it.)
an old cardboard box is pulled out of recycling to serve as a makeshift bed, and some spare towels are neatly spread out on the bottom to provide some bedding.
you watch marc have a staring contest with the kitten as it sits inside, every muscle in his body tensed and ready as if anticipating a fight. the kitten, a valiant opponent, doesn’t seem to show any fear at the sight of your boyfriend, ancient ceremonial armor be damned.
it’s not until it’s contentedly chomping down on some boiled chicken you prepared that marc finally gives up the driver’s seat, getting some rest at yours and the others’ insistence.
jake comes in with a wide, wide grin, immediately crouching beside the box with a disbelieving sound.
“so small,” he comments, twiddling his fingers in a way to entice the little guy. the spark in jake’s eye is enough to know that he’s on your side in the keep-him-or-don’t conversation.
which means that finally, you can ask the question that’s been on the tip of your tongue all night.
“what should we name him?” after the impromptu bath, the orange of its fur gleams a little warmer in the low light of the flat, but you wait patiently as you let kitten sniff you. you bite back a giggle when its whiskers brush against your hand.
jake winces in a way that tells you that he must be getting an earful from inside the headspace, but presses on. “juice? naranja? OJ?”
you raise an eyebrow. “you really want to name him after orange juice, huh.”
“yeah well, steven says some egyptian god.” he rolls his eyes. typical.
“and what does marc say?”
“marc says—” his voice shifts to a monotone drone “’—oh my god stop trying to pet the cat it’s still dirty and hostile and why are we trying to name the damn thing it’s only been here for like an hour it’s not staying jake shut your mouth you’re not funny—’”
your laugh startles the kitten but you can’t help it, burying your head in your arms to muffle the sound to no avail. if you looked up, you’d see the smug look jake is pointing at his nearest reflection.
there’s a nudge at your side as you quiet down. “and what about you, carino? what do you think?”
“hmm.” you tilt your head. “where did marc find him?”
a pause as he listens, then, “in a dumpster. behind that chinese place we like.”
your mind whirs, and you can see that jake is following the same train of thought. egg tart. chicken chow mein. mapo tofu.
you gasp, “dumpling.”
the look on marc’s face when you put ‘dumpling’ on the forms at the veterinarian’s office is priceless.
for what it’s worth, the kitten is in surprisingly good shape. some washing up, a round of vaccinations, and one microchip later, he’s released back into your care with little fanfare, but you’re positively buzzing.
you guys go a little overboard at the pet shop. jake fills the handbasket with an assortment of toys while steven and marc argue incessantly about the best food to buy, which bed he’d prefer.
“thought you didn’t even want to keep him!” steven snarks into the gleam of a metal shelf at some point, and you can practically hear marc’s ensuing scoff.
when you guys get home, jake dumps all the toys on the ground at once, a colourful mess of bells and feathers that almost blend into steven’s existing mess.
to no one’s surprise, dumpling plays more with the disposable plastic bag than the toys themselves. still, that doesn’t matter—jake can lay on his stomach and play with him for hours.
steven, mediocre human food chef, becomes a master cat food chef.
“good god,” you comment as he comes back from the store with his arms full of fancy looking packages. what started as mixing wet food in with the dry has seemingly become a new pinpoint of steven’s focus, and your eyebrows raise a little more with each label you read.
chicken liver, mussels, duck egg—all freeze dried and decked out in cartoony illustrations. dumpling jumps up to take a look, sniffing inquisitively at each bag.
“you’re gonna be eating better than us,” you quip. he’s still a little cautious, shying from sudden movements, so you just let him explore and don’t push when he slinks away.
“little guy only deserves the best, doesn’t he?” steven pulls out dumpling’s fish-shaped dish. you watch, mesmerized as he carefully begins to put food on it; he’s even pulled out the kitchen scale to properly measure everything.
steven talks as he goes, telling you (and dumpling) about each element with the same vigor he would apply to egyptology. organ meats for nutrients, bone broth for hydration, oils for a shiny coat—dumpling looks as baffled as you are.
although—he also looks quite impatient. steven keeps having to push him back to keep him from the dish before it’s ready. his little paws slide on the counter each time.
“ta-da!” steven presents the finished product to you with a flourish. it’s surprisingly well-plated for someone who sometimes eats straight from the pan.
though it doesn’t last long. the second he places it down, dumpling is ravenous. broth is splashed onto the ground. bits of dehydrated powder get caught in his chin. you worry a little that he’s gonna choke somehow.
steven manages to pull his attention away from the scene for a second, turning to you. a proud smile pulls at his lips. “think he likes it?”
with all your efforts, it doesn’t take very long for dumpling to get comfortable; the flat becomes his kingdom.
you find him lounging on the top shelves of steven’s bookcases and leaving stapler-like holes in marc’s research notes with his teeth.
jake is constantly running around looking for his driving gloves because dumpling always manages to get his paws on them and always squirrels them away in separate locations, somehow.
you wake up more often than not to a mouthful of fur—he loves to sleep on your pillow, regardless of whether or not your head is already on it.
“why. why.” marc dangles dumpling in the air by his front legs. an entire piece of sushi—swiped from marc’s plate on the coffee table—hangs from the kitten’s mouth, nearly the size of his head. there is not a hint of remorse. “steven’s putting a dent in our finances to buy you organic beef hearts or whatever-the-hell and you come over here to steal my food?”
the defendant remains silent. marc lets out a low grumble and deposits dumpling onto his lap, sushi and all, keeping his hand on him to stop him from taking anything else.
you lean into his side. “thought you said we shouldn’t give him any scraps, hm?”
it’s true—while jake folded immediately, often sneaking bites to dumpling under the table, and steven excuses a bit here and there just as a treat, love—marc is the strict cat-dad who stubbornly ignores those big, begging green eyes whenever they pop up during a meal.
or at least, he was. marc chews slowly, an obvious delay to answering your question, and so you hum again, prodding. it’s not that he’s hated having the cat around, but for a while it was clear that he was the sole holdout to keeping him.
finally, he swallows. you wait with bated breath as he sighs. “he can have a little bit. just this once, though.”
the last part is said directly to the culprit, who’s purring like a motor with the soils of his hunt. your grin is blinding. marc goes back to eating, but you and dumpling come to the same delightful conclusion—
yeah, it’s not going to be just this once.

Launched during the pandemic with a playbook to shoot $150 million-plus seasons with no pilots, the Disney unit is undergoing growing pains and seeing the logic of "traditional TV culture."
...
Through it all, the company eschewed the traditional TV-making model. It didn’t commission pilots but instead shot entire $150 million-plus seasons of TV on the fly. It didn’t hire showrunners, but instead depended on film executives to run its series. And as Marvel does for its movies, it relied on postproduction and reshoots to fix what wasn’t working.
Even though they remain, along with Star Wars titles, the most watched shows on Disney+, Marvel series have recently faced a number of creative challenges and cries of diminishing returns from critics and audience metrics, causing a major shift at the studio to move to make TV shows the more traditional way.
“We’re trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture,” says Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation. “It comes down to, ‘How can we tell stories in television that honor what’s so great about the source material?’”
With Daredevil’s new direction, Marvel hopes to right the ship on a project with sky-high expectations. The show is Marvel’s first to feature a hero who already had a successful series on Netflix, running three seasons. But sources say that Corman and Ord crafted a legal procedural that did not resemble the Netflix version, known for its action and violence. Cox didn’t even show up in costume until the fourth episode. Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show.
Marvel plans to keep some scenes and episodes, though other serialized elements will be injected, with Corman and Ord becoming executive producers on the two-season series.
Daredevil is far from the first Marvel series to undergo drastic behind-the-scenes changes. Those who work with Marvel on the TV side have complained of a lack of central vision that has, according to sources, begun to afflict the studio’s shows with creative differences and tension. “TV is a writer-driven medium,” says one insider familiar with the Marvel process. “Marvel is a Marvel-driven medium.”
On the Oscar Isaac starrer Moon Knight, show creator and writer Jeremy Slater quit and director Mohamed Diab took the reins. Jessica Gao developed and wrote She-Hulk: Attorney at Law but was sidelined once director Kat Coiro came on board. Production was challenging, with COVID hitting cast and crew, and Gao was brought back to oversee postproduction, a typical showrunner duty, but it’s the rare Marvel head writer who has such oversight.
Even though the company does not have a writers-first approach to TV, directors could feel short-changed as well. “The whole ‘fix it in post’ attitude makes it feel like a director doesn’t matter sometimes,” says one person familiar with the process.
As its shows ramped up during the pandemic, Marvel stepped outside its usual staffing approach and brought in outside execs after years of internally promoting creatives who had been sufficiently trained in the Marvel method.
This change was felt most severely on Secret Invasion, the Samuel L. Jackson-led thriller that stands as Marvel’s worst-reviewed series. Kyle Bradstreet, a writer and executive producer on USA Network Emmy winner Mr. Robot, had been working on the scripts for Secret Invasion for about a year when he was fired after Marvel decided on a different direction. Enter new writer Brian Tucker, who penned the crime thriller Broken City. Thomas Bezucha, who helmed the thriller Let Him Go, and Ali Selim, who worked on Hulu’s 9/11 drama The Looming Tower, were on board as directors and to help crack the story.

So...this story originally began as an entry I wrote for the @smquickies2022 event a few months ago. The challenge was to write a sexy fic in a thousand words or less, which I managed to do...but I wasn’t particularly fond of the result, to be honest. The entry ended up focusing almost entirely on the sex to the exclusion of everything else, so I decided to expand the story for Smutember using the Day 16 prompt of “Something New” for the original @smutember event. It can also fit under the Week 3 prompts of “First Times” and “Friends With Benefits” of Sailor Moon Smutember, hosted by @floraone. (It wasn’t Setsuna’s first threesome, but it was Usagi’s and Mamoru’s.)
Anyway, I’ve also included the original smquickies entry (Theme: Lace) as a bonus chapter for posterity, but there’s really no reason to read it if you’ve already read this chapter...unless you really are just interested in reading the smut part. In that case...have fun!
Summary:   Looking for something new to spice up their sex life after a thousand years of marriage, Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion invite their good friend Setsuna into their bed for a memorable night together. (FF.net)

Now that the two of them have officially retired from competitive skating, Yuuri is blindsided when his husband Viktor makes known his desire for a baby. He never even considered the idea of fatherhood before, but when Yuuko calls him last minute, desperate for someone to look after the ten-year-old triplets so she and Takeshi can celebrate their wedding anniversary, they’re given the opportunity for some first-hand experience taking care of children. Last Song: Weightless Part 1 by Macaroni Union
Honestly, this will be my answer probably 90% of the time 😅 I listen to it every night to go to sleep, so unless I've played music since waking up, this will be my last song.
Currently Watching: Legend of Voltron
I didn't watch it when it was airing, and I'm trying to now, but I'm not really hooked, tbh. I think I'd rather read a nice plotty and shippy fic of it than actually watch the show 😅
Tho actually, I'm kind of devestated that Pidge turned out to be a girl, because I was so very ready to throw my shipping heart into Shiro/Pidge and it's just. Not anywhere near as appealing (to me) as a het ship 😔
Currently Reading: in labyrinths of reflection by blackkat (blackkatmagic on tumblr)
I think this is my 3rd time reading this? It's very good. I've never read any Moon Knight or Batman comics, but Kat writes in such a way that you get a strong sense of the characters and their world even without prior knowledge.
Current Obsession: sleep?
I've taken some time off work, and most of what I've been doing with it is sleeping, tbh 😅

I have lost interest in the US version of Ghosts. The Halloween episode was good, sure, but the other four episodes so far have been... not-so-good for me. I really didn't like how they tackled Sasappis's story in the fourth episode, with him lying to Sam about the real reason why the tree needed saving.
I get that they want to flesh out the ghosts' characters more, but... it feels a little mean-spirited at times. Especially because the US version doesn't shy away from the real-world consequences of the Ghosts' actions; unlike in the original version, where Alison and Mike are a little insulated from the real world.
I think the reason why I liked the Halloween episode compared to the other four episodes is because the ghosts were working together, even with Isaac's romantic subplot with Nigel. Which is reminiscent of the first season, where the ghosts may have different goals and perspectives--but they were a unit. Splitting them apart to explore new stories is great, sure, but when Thor sulks off into the basement because of Isaac's careless words... When Hetty starts complaining about a broken washing machine that's never bothered her before (and stopped bothering her after Flower's suggestion at what she does with it)... When Sass convinces Pete to be less positive (after how many years together as ghosts?)... It's...
It's a little aggressive.
I don't know if I'm giving up on the show completely. I have been looking forward to Matthew Baynton's guest appearance which should be airing soon. It hasn't gone the way of Call Me Kat yet where watching the show annoyed the heck out of me (which is why I stopped watching). But I kind of feel bad that it hasn't gone the way of Abbott Elementary where even less-than-stellar episodes have made me smile.

In She-Hulk We Trust
I am big mad at the criticisms this show has gotten. Especially from people who are just saying "[the show] never disappoints when it comes to disappointment" and shit like that.
As a writer, that fucking sucks. 'Cause, you know what? The show actually took the time to introduce us to a character, present to us why a superhero lifestyle doesn't work out for everyone, gave us the pros and cons of being super in a world where powers exist, and took us on the main character's journey of self-acceptance. That's the show. It was never about which Marvel superhero or villain is guest-starring next. This was never a show where Jen and/or She-Hulk just takes care of stuff and move on. And what people who decided to not like the show is saying, essentially, is this: "we don't want shows that make us care or think. We just want you to perform for our desires regardless of whether it's good or not."
She-Hulk had one of the best thorough-lines in all the produced Marvel series for Disney+ so far. Maybe the best, since Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel all had pacing issues that could've been solved with additional episodes. And WandaVision fell to the Marvel trap of having a big CGI fight in the final act.
I hope She-Hulk gets a second season. Just so haters can seethe.
. . .
Well, I did have one note for the She-Hulk finale that could've made it better. A "Wongers!" from an off-screen Madisynn. I get that they shot the finale before they cast Madisynn, but they were probably still editing the finale when the character became a fan favorite. There was time to add a single word via ADR.

Zac Oyama did not want us, the fans, to become enamored with actual shithead (derogatory) Norman Takamori—not to be confused with trying-his-best Skip—so he followed the captain up with two actual shitheads (affectionate): Squing and PiB.

Submitted for the approval of the Tumblr Review Board, I call this fever dream:
Tumblr media
This idea's been percolating in my head since the end of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity--the desire to see Aabria, Matt, and Brennan playing together with not one of them as the Dungeon Master. And the idea pretty much got stuck there for a while.
And then Dropout TV's Adventuring Academy came back and I learned about Connie Chang, and I saw that they had unbelievable chemistry with Brennan, and it made me want to see them play together in a game too.
Murph came into this dream cast because he has such a different energy over at Naddpod that... it made me wonder how he'll play in a group where everyone's a DM.
Last but not the least, Jasmine Bhullar. I don't actually know how to explain why I want her in my dream cast. There's just something about her energy, her vibe, that tells me she's going to make this cast come together in a way that's totally unexpected.

Not a prompt- Kat, I know you also watched/read Bleach. What would you say would happen if Moon Knight ended up in Soul City? Would Konshu tear the dimension apart for him or would he have to wait till his Knight steps out of the realm of death? (of course that would mean he had to lose him first)
I think that would depend on how you want your fic to go. But if you're going off Egyptian mythology, Khonshu was one of the gods who accompanied pharaohs to the underworld to help them slay their enemies.

Another Piece of the Puzzle
Tumblr media
*gif has nothing to do with this story i just like it haha*
Summary: Charlotte and Yami add another piece to the puzzle of their shared life
Pairing: Yami x Charlotte
TW: swearing, mentions of pregnancy and childbirth
Link to A03 here
A/N: So I had another baby this past summer so I guess I’m in my baby feels ha and just had to write something fluffy for the OTP. Also Yami with a baby makes my ovaries go wooooooooo. Enjoy, sweet potatoes!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Why’s it so red?”
She rolls her eyes, the tiny movement feeling overwhelmingly exhausting. “That’s just how they come out. And she’s your daughter, not an ‘it’, you moron.”
The being in question gives a quiet little grunt, as if agreeing. Yami chuckles quietly.
“Already siding with your mother, I see,” he says, shifting the tiny bundle in his arms. She feels her heart swell at the sight; Yami Sukehiro, the rough, uncouth, take no shit Magic Knight Captain, cradling a baby with the utmost delicacy. Not just any baby: their baby.
Holy shit, she is a mother. Even though she’d went through nine months of carrying her, and then unimaginable hours of labour, she still can’t quite wrap her head around it. She’d always had a constant sliver of anxiety and fear ever since she’d found out she was with child. She didn’t know anything about being a mother, what if she was terrible at it?
Surprisingly, Yami had been very level headed and reassuring throughout the whole thing. “It’s normal to be scared. Hell, I’m terrified. But after all the shit we’ve seen and done, a baby can’t be that hard.”
(Except for the labour. He’d been a hot mess for that. She hadn’t known whether to laugh, cry or punch him in his stupid face when he’d shouted “Surpass your limits Charlotte! Surpass them right now!” during a particularly rough contraction.)
Well, whatever came their way, they’d figure it out. To think there was a time she could barely hold it together in his presence, and now she is watching him with their child.
“She still needs a name, you know,” she says, reaching out to stroke the dark downy hair that covers their daughter’s head. “Are you sure you don’t want to give her a name from your home country?”
He shakes his head. “Nah, she’s already gonna have my last name, that’s a good enough connection to the past for me. Besides, this is my home now.”
He says it casually, but his eyes meet hers with a softness that takes her breath away. He doesn’t mean the Clover Kingdom. He means here with her, with their daughter. Tears pool in her eyes, and she hastens to blink them away. Was he trying to kill her today? Her heart was going to burst if it was filled with any more happiness. “Do you have any ideas then?”
He hums in thought. “She needs a badass name. She’s got two super badass parents, after all.” His brow furrows for a moment, then his eyes light up.
“Katana!” He shouts, and the little bundle in his arms wakes with a cry at the noise. He quickly rocks it with a few shushing noises, and the sound subsides. She’s vaguely impressed by how good he is at that already.
“You can’t be serious. You want to name her after your sword?”
He grins, his trademark cigarette bouncing with the movement. “Why not? Nothing’s more badass than being named after a deadly weapon.”
Her mouth drops open. He is serious, that asshole! She crosses her arms. “We are not naming our baby after your stupid sword!”
“It’s not stupid!” He says defensively. “She’s gonna grow up to be an ass kicking tough gal with a ton of strong magic, it’s a perfect name. Better than some wishy washy royal name that the King of Hard Noses would pick for his kid or something.”
He softens his face into a puppy dog pleading look, the kind she once thought she’d never see on his face (but was surprisingly common these days, he knows it usually makes her cave). “Come on, Prickly Queen. You can even call her Kat for short.”
Kat Sukehiro. It doesn’t sound half bad.
“No.”
“Please?”
“No!”
“Awww come on, Charlotte.”
She stares into his begging face, so stupid and so damn good looking. She sighs, feeling her resolve crumble into dust. It really isn’t a bad name. Damn this man and his effect on her! She’d give him the bloody moon if he asked her.
“Alright, fine. But everyone is going call her Kat, not Katana, understood?”
He grins that stupid shit-eating grin she’s grown begrudgingly fond of. “Your wish is my command, Prickly Queen.”
She lets out a “hmmmmph,” crossing her arms. “It better be.”
He laughs at her, and adjusts the newly named Kat so he can lean in and press his lips to hers.
“Thank you,” he murmurs into their kiss, and she knows he doesn’t just mean the name. The tears are back; it should be her thanking him. For breaking her stupid curse. For respecting her. For encouraging her strength. For loving her with a fierceness that can’t be rivalled. For making this perfect creation with her.
She kisses him harder, words stuck in her throat, and she knows he understands.
Feet pound down the hallway. Voices yell. The door to her room shakes as multiple fists knock in unison.
“Mister Yami!!! Where’s the little brat??”
True to Black Bull fashion, his unruly squad interrupts their moment by trying to break down her door.
“I told you not to come up till I said so, you dumbasses!” Yami growls, pulling away from her. “We’re having a damn family moment here!”
“Sorry Sir! Sorry Captain Charlotte!”
“I’ll kill you, you idiots!”
She laughs, wiping away the lone tear that managed to wend its way down her cheek. “It’s alright. They’re your family too. Let them meet their new little sister.”
“Tch,” Yami sighs, but she can hear the fondness in his voice. “Alright, idiots. Come in and see her then. But no touching! And don’t crowd me, dammit!”
They don’t listen of course. They’re in the door and immediately crushing around him, shouting and cooing compliments. They are a million times more rowdy than her Knights will be when they visit later, but she can’t bring herself to be upset. Little Kat is only hours old yet already surrounded by so much love.
“I said don’t crowd me, morons!”
“Sorry sir!”
She smiles at the scene. Her already full heart is spilling over in a fountain of boundless happiness. Yami meets her gaze above the sea of bobbing heads, face stoic but his eyes betray him. He’s deliriously happy too; they’re fulfilling a dream that once danced far out of reach. Magic Knights, Squad captains, lovers, parents. An eccentric blended family tied by bonds far greater than blood. Each a piece added to the intricate and beautiful puzzle of their shared lives.
It is not complete. It won’t be until they depart for whatever lies beyond. But it will be a joy to build it, to interlock each piece. Even the ones painted with hardships and sorrow; she will place them will strong hands, for she knows brighter ones will come.
And the final picture, she thinks as she watches Yami proudly show off their daughter, will be beautiful.

It is tempting for a moment to think that when Marth shifts, the world moves with him; ripped apart and rearranged though she and her classmates may be, as casually and carelessly as one might throw together a paltry salad, somehow the Hero-King has brought with him the moon and stars. She can hardly believe it-- the only people in all the world who she would wish to say goodbye to, and she does not have to be parted with them.
(Not yet, at least.)
And then, the world halts. She realizes there is a rose, of sorts, and though she doubts it waits for her, it is odd to realize that her world has become bigger when she must leave a piece of it behind; odder still to wonder upon its strangeness when she had been so prepared for her farewells just a moment ago. Yet, despite how foreign all of this is, she finds she rather likes it.
"You hide well," Katarina murmurs, peering around the tree with one had laid atop her chest in a way so quintessentially her. What fortune that he wears what she can but assume is his own face at present, elsewise she would have had no hope of finding him, trained eyes or no. "That's good."
There, in the silence, her gaze lingers upon him, bereft of any gracious tugs of her lips or displeased quirks of her brows; it is simply observation, the writing of impish smirks and scarlet eyes and walls she understands but doesn't, all into her memory.
"Um," she begins again, "You know... you have to stay safe." Gray eyes flicker away from him all at once, hiding in the expressionless, judgement-less safety of the grass at her feet. "...Please be careful..."
Orders are given from higher up. Friends and strangers alike are organized onto wagons and horses like good little soldiers. Later, shipped off in bushels to the far reaches of Fòdlan for the sake of their ‘mission’. The specifics don’t really matter to him, but once Xane reaches the conclusion that a month is too long a time to be left behind, his own course of action became only perfectly evident.
If you can’t beat em’—and by them what he really means is the world-breaking forces of boredom and inertia in particular—then join them.
It’s as easy said as done. He’s always lived the way he wanted, unshackled by nothing, doing only what he pleases (only recently has that started to change), but the rumor mill says that the going this time will be rough. Some folk in the field may get hurt. Bad or worse. Only King Naga above will know where the winds take him from here. But as for the concern of his fate and how it will unfold, turns out he’s not alone in wondering that.
"  —Gotta say, I'm pretty flattered! That’s a pretty meaningful compliment comin’ from you, miss former assassin,  “  Xane says with a glib smirk, not finding it too surprising that his hiding spot has been staked out. Not surprised at all that it was Katarina who hunted him down; in reality, he’d have felt insulted if it had been anyone else.
Now’s not the time for pride and bluster, though. He steps out from behind the hedge, scratching absently at a spot behind his ear with a surprising lack for words. Katarina, Kris, Marth. Those three were the earliest to depart, and even with his illusion of feigned ignorance and uncaring, Xane had known. Turning a blind eye, he had been hoping to watch them go without a word. Goodbyes never were his thing. Not then in Archanea, and certainly not now...
—but as always, it’s the humans that flush Xane out of his foxhole and break his habits. The humans who seed his conviction to forsake mankind, and the humans who convince him to give them a chance all over again. Unbeknownst to the knight, he shakes his head fondly.   “  Heh-heh! Don’t worry about me, Kat, I’ll be fine. If push comes to shove, I’ll conjure up my memory of old man Gotoh and warp magic my way outta danger. Too bad you can’t do that!  “
He pulls down his lower eyelid and blows a raspberry, although soon the puckish behavior fades and Xane straightens instead, face drawn tight in a solemn expression.   “  No, seriously. Worry about yourself. Humans are weak and your lives are short, you guys don’t have the luxury to be concerned about others.  “   Harsh words but she’ll know what he means, she and the others always do—so he shifts in place, shuffling his feet. Looking down. Says what he truly means.
“  I’ll be fine, so... So... Don’t you be dying out there, either.  “

Two Years Later
He rubs his eyes, three in the morning and his wife’s side of the bed is empty. He gets up, shuffling out of the bedroom. He follows the sound of her guitar. Knowing where she is, barely awake and he could find her even dead asleep.
He stops in the opening of the room. Watching, listening, as he leans on the frame. Her back is to him, sitting on the stool of the rocking chair. A small light on the nightstand, to find a path.
She strums softly, playing the song she always played. For Morgan at first, than when she got pregnant. Now when their daughter cried, she played the same song. Singing along softly, he shifts to see through the crib bars.
Stacy is fast asleep. Smooth rise and fall of her little chest and belly. She’s stretched out, sadly she sleeps like him. It wasn’t the only trait either, she got the rumbled hair as well.
They’re hoping it settles down as she gets older. Sadly, she currently looks a little like she was shocked, the way her hair stands up. There were many, baby hats and headbands to attempt to tame it. It was a source of humor for most of them.
Movement underneath the crib, drags his eyes down. Baby is half under the crib opening, her tail slowly thumps. It was her favorite place to sleep, anywhere near Stacy. Baby went from protecting Y/N to being the furry protector of Stacy.
Y/N softly sets down the guitar in the rocking chair. She stands, Baby doesn’t even move. If it’s not Stacy crying or laughing, she isn’t bothered. She turns to find him watching.
He winks at her; she breaks into a grin. Everything he wanted in life, stood in one room. There was nothing else he could honestly ever want. He got his dream come true when she returned home.
“Why are you up?” She whispers meeting him at the door. He steps out and she follows, pulling the door half closed.
“You were gone. Figured I’d check on you.”
“You’re as bad as Stac. Can’t sleep alone.” She rolls her eyes, with a grin.
“Guess she didn’t just get my hair.” He chuckles.
“Oh please she’s a miniature you.” She snorts, shaking her head.
“I asked for a boy.” He shrugs.
“Oh I remember.” She smirks. He leans in kissing her softly.
“You need to get some sleep, you’re going to be tired for mom’s tomorrow.” He takes her hand, leading her towards their room.
“I’m always tired, Howie.” She laughs. “I’ve been tired since you got me pregnant.” She reminds him.
“Think this is just how we are now?” He wonders.
“Tired for life.” She nods, dropping on to the bed.
“Want to have another one?” He chuckles, crashing down next to her.
“Let’s get Stac to a year and we can have another one.” She sighs.
“Eight months left.” He shrugs, grinning at her.
“How.” She sits up suddenly.
“What?”
“What did we do with the engagement ring?” She looks over.
“Oh fuck.” He drags his hands down his face. He sits up, both getting out of bed again.
“Peter’s going to kill us.” She laughs, digging through the laundry basket.
“Why did he give it to us? We have a baby, we’re barely functioning!” Howie groans, digging through his nightstand.
“I think cause we have a child, we’re seen as responsible.” She looks over.
“That’s stupid. Nobody can be responsible this tired.” He shakes his head. She’s cracking up quietly as she hurries from the room. He gets up following her. This was going to take all night, even if Stac doesn’t wake up again. Looks like another night of no sleep, but damn was it worth it.
----
Howie stood in the kitchen of his parents house, Stac curled up against his chest. Tucked into the crook of his arm. He chats happily with some of the guys, you sat at the table, watching. Taking in the place you’d always hoped you’d get to.
You watch as Howie softly pats Stacy’s bottom, lulling her into sleep. She didn’t sleep for just anyone, she needed the bottom pats from her father, or Peter. They looked enough alike to her she didn’t notice a difference. Or the singing from you, but she enjoyed a good rocking while you hummed to her as well.
You’re lost in your mind, drifting through thoughts. Someone nudges you, snapping you out of your head. People are excited, hugging each other. You scan the room, confused. Oh no, you missed it.
“They’re engaged.” Frank chuckles softly next to you.
“Oh fuck.” You jump up, ready to hug your brother and soon to be sister in law.
“Congrats.” You hug Peter.
“You missed it, huh?” He chuckles into your hair.
“Pete, I’m so sorry.” You groan, dropping your head into his chest.
“It’s fine.” He laughs. Rubbing his hand down your back. “You’re a new mom, sleep doesn’t come much.” He kisses the top of your head.
“I put my jeans on backwards this morning.” You admit softly.
“Twice.” Howie adds joining the two of you.
“I know.” You run a hand through your hair.
“Congrats, knew you could do it.” Howie gives Peter a one armed hug, both avoiding crushing Stacy between them.
“Told you she was going to kick my ass the whole way.” Peter chuckles, leaning down to kiss the top of Stacy’s head.
“And I’ll keep kicking your ass, just wait till we get to the sleeping through the night phase.” You pat him on the chest.
“That’s fair.” Peter grins at you.
“Oh MJ.” You sigh, pulling her into a hug. “Congrats.” You smile.
“You look tired.” She laughs.
“Yeah, since you’re engaged and it all worked out.” You nod.
“We lost your engagement ring last night.” Howie chuckles.
“We got less sleep, because we had to tear the house apart to find it.” You add.
“Where was it?” Peter laughs.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” You shake your head.
“Why?” MJ laughs.
“In the fridge, next to the stored bags of milk.” Howie grins.
“I’m tired. Fuck off.” You wave your hand at them as they cackle.
“Come on, how about some coffee.” Tony’s arm slips over your shoulder.
“I like coffee.” You nod, letting him lead you away.
“It’s going to be your new best friend. You’ll like it more than your husband most days.” He chuckles.
“Oh so how I feel about Steve?” You throw an evil grin back at your husband.
“I swear to god, don’t think that’s sliding.” He points a finger at you.
“Frankie take care of my light work.” You sass, taking a cup of coffee from Pepper.
“I just want the baby girl, you married him. He’s your problem.” Frank stands next to Howie, who willingly hands over your daughter to him.
“The authority in your voice is weak.” Pepper explains.
“I’m to tired to have authority.” You snort.
“So, where were we?” Howie stops next to you suddenly.
“I love you?” You grin at him, sipping your coffee.
“I thought so.” Howie grins, leaning he presses a sweet kiss to your lips. “I love you too, Pretty Girl.” He pulls you into his side, resting his head on top of your head.
“Man’s killed someone for me, coo’s at our daughter like a monk.” You giggle, watching Frankie talk softly to Stacy.
“You’ll never have to bury a body.” Howie chuckles.
“That’s prospect work, Queens don’t bury bodies.” Your mother in law hums as she moves past the two of you.
“I love this family.” You grin up at your husband.
“Right where you belong, baby girl.” He smiles, leaning down to kiss you once again.
Oh yes, right, right where you belonged.

Below, I’m sharing a long outline of what was discussed in this wonderful interview, for those who can’t or prefer not to listen but want to know the content. It is very long and I don’t feel like finding pictures so you’ll have to just enjoy it like it is. It’s not a transcript but it is, in my own words for the most part, a recitation of everything Susana and Rebecca talked about: musicals, the upcoming movie, animation influences, and quite a few things you did not already know.
Susana introduces the interview by saying that tons of attention is paid to the diversity and the characters and all this great stuff in the show, but she wants to talk about the science fiction aspects and the society and worldbuilding Rebecca and her team have put in. She begins by talking about how the show seems so planned considering aspects of the show's beginning feed so well into the end, and she asks Rebecca to talk about that.
Rebecca opens by saying it was conceived as a coming-of-age story, so a ton of stuff that the adults know, Steven doesn't know, allowing it to be a story about things that happened to adults but remain child-friendly. Rebecca brings up a college class on the sublime that she took, about what's going on and implied to be going on just outside the frame of the art, so she was really taken with that concept.
Rebecca claims that her planning is pretty dry, and it's just a bunch of charts. She had stuff like Fusion names and weapons from the beginning, and of course she couldn't use them in her pitch because it didn't make sense without knowing the characters. Susana mentions that CN wanted the show to be aired in no particular order, and Rebecca mentions how it was hard to work with because she DID want continuity. Planting seeds in episodes and giving puzzle pieces that'd come together later worked for a long time, while still making each episode work as a whole and be satisfying. Later, when CN came to them wanting like eight related episodes, there they had the barn arc to give them--they had already planned to make this story related. She felt it aired in a "bizarre" way, but they comforted themselves on the Crew knowing someday people would watch it how it was meant to be watched. As a lead-up to the movie, CN IS going to air "every Steven ever," so people will actually get to see it in marathon format.
Batman: The Animated Series comes up and they discuss how censorship limited what they could do on that show because of problems with glass breaking. Susana says she actually really appreciates it when stories can still be told well despite the constraints put on them, and asks Rebecca if that applies to SU. Rebecca agrees that it does, and also that she loves stuff like video games that managed to function with ridiculously small space requirements. Developers still offered up such creativity, she says. So because of the beauty that arises from those constraints, she thought she should have constraints in her show on purpose, even if it isn't applied from outside. The most obvious one for this show was that we're trapped into only knowing and seeing what Steven knows and sees. "The Test" is a good example of Steven actually seeing something he isn't supposed to see: the Gems having a private conversation about him. According to her, plenty of stuff is written about what the Gems are up to outside of what Steven knows about them, and they can only kind of hint at it.
Coming from Adventure Time, there were some similar aspects. Rebecca got to work with some of her heroes from independent comics, and she got a lot of inspiration from them. On Adventure Time, it's our world but far in the future, and Rebecca would have loved to do something similar with Steven because she loved that aspect. Quite a few of the Adventure Time crew had come over from Flapjack and they thought it would be funny if the Adventure Time characters found a tape of Flapjack. As much as it would have been cool to take that idea for her show, that was theirs, so Steven's is more like it's our Earth but in an alternate timeline where Gems invaded 6,000 years ago. She rattles off some known similarities and differences of our two worlds, and elaborates on how Hollywood is in Kansas because in that world Disney never left where they started. Laugh-O-Gram Studio took off like it didn't in our timeline. She has a ton of other info like that but it won't matter to reveal it until or unless it matters to Steven. (She also throws in that Harman-Ising could be Ising-Harman in her world if they never figured out how cute it would be to have it the other way.)
When Susana asks about how she took so many details and managed to make a pilot with enough of them that she could get a show with it, Rebecca takes a turn into discussing working on Hotel Transylvania (for just a month!) with Genndy Tartakovsky. She had been planning to have a month off, but then Genndy asked, so she of course couldn't say no and felt she learned a ton. (She wrote the Steven Universe theme song in the car during that commute, by the way, given that she had a lot of time to sing and be alone.) When she hit Genndy with some of her ideas, he advised her to slim the details down and just boil it into its essence--who are the people and what is their relationship to each other? She still uses that advice, trying to condense things from macro to micro. She has succeeded since in figuring out how to keep the complexity and still assert the simplicity. Ultimately, you can keep those details but you don't have to emphasize them if they're not feeding into the main point. They'll drag the piece down. They discuss Genndy's role as the Animation Director on her pilot, which happened when she was asking if he knew anyone and he ended up saying he'd do it himself. She was so shocked that he agreed to direct her pilot that she was dazed and ran into a pole in the parking lot. The whistling of the wind through the resulting dent always made her giddy because she was thinking she would be working with Genndy.
Susana then turns to discussing Rebecca's influences and brings up Revolutionary Girl Utena. Rebecca mentions that she initially saw Utena because a person named Connie lent it to her in high school, so that's where SU's Connie's name comes from. Rebecca points out how hilarious Utena is in addition to being beautiful. She felt it was formative because Utena was "gender expansive and bisexual." Rebecca saw the movie first (which she doesn't recommend doing), then saw the series and then the movie again. She wanted to understand why the characters were turning into cars. (Chronicler's note: I was equally baffled by the Utena movie's car chase and car transformation stuff in the early 2000s. I did not know what to make of it.)
Rebecca elaborates on Utena and art influences, saying she loves to trace artists' influences to see where their pieces were coming from. She saw that Utena is very influenced by Princess Knight, and she was thrilled to visit places in Japan that influenced Osamu Tezuka. The Takurazuka Theatre is in Tezuka's town, and Rebecca describes how every show there is performed only by women. She felt that having this theater there influencing Tezuka certainly inspired him to include gender expansiveness in his work. The influences are so obvious when you look at the sources, and now all of this that came through Tezuka's work then through Utena then to Rebecca is so incredible.
When Susana brings up trends and how magical girl stuff influenced today's creators, Rebecca says she prefers not to think of it as a trend really because some of what's roaring out in popularity now was always around but was actively prevented from being made in the past. She talks about watching Tenchi Universe (the "Universe" part of SU came from Tenchi!) and Sailor Moon on CN, knowing it wasn't American, but she didn't really realize it "didn't belong" on the network, and felt that her access to influences was really unusually open--especially since her dad was an animation nerd and had a bunch of unusual stuff that influenced her, especially stuff that gave her a peek into how animation actually worked and knowledge that she could be one of the people making it. If she could call anything a trend now, it's that that sort of access is now available to more people because of the interconnectedness of the Internet and how we're so much more capable of influencing each other now.
They then discuss some anime stuff they had been exposed to and how Rebecca helped with an intro to Whisper of the Heart which is her favorite movie. She discusses how that movie (and Kiki's Delivery Service) are good representations of creative processes and sometimes what happens if an artist is blocked. She thinks the actual craft and work associated with the process is more important (and more interesting) than talent. Rebecca adores artists who take notes and figure out how to make their stuff good versus a specific moment of inspiration or an artist just "bleeding" their talent on everything. Art is a craft! You can study it! This is front and center in Whisper of the Heart. Rebecca discusses the Russian movie Film Film Film (which influenced the Zircons' design), and it has a writer character who is afraid that his process will destroy something inspired by a muse. She thinks it's a really interesting look at process.
Next they discuss a science fiction story in another format: the book The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin. Kat Morris lent Rebecca the book while they were roommates at the very beginning of when the show was starting. She loved seeing how the world worked in the book through the way they treated the main character. They also discuss the artist Jules Feiffer, who Rebecca had a relationship with because she carpooled with his nephews. They gave her a book of his called A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears. She loved it so much, especially how it deconstructed fairy tale tropes. One story was about a prince whose special ability made people close to him laugh themselves senseless, so he really couldn't have a relationship with anyone. She considers this an influence on Pink Diamond as a character. The SU character Sadie was named after this book's character Plain Sadie.
Next, Susana asks about musical influences for the show. Rebecca names Patti LuPone first. She saw Patti as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and remembers seeing her playing the tuba in this weird arrangement where the cast was also the orchestra. She was so impressed. When she later wrote to Patti asking her to be Yellow Diamond, she referenced learning from her that a person could be so dramatic that it's funny and vice versa. She also has a "chills" moment from a different show, during "Everything's Coming Up Roses," where the character she's playing is imagining an audience going wild but the actual audience IS going wild.
As they discuss how the upcoming movie is a musical, Rebecca talks about going home with Ian after work and putting on musicals or movies based on TV shows so they can "study" for what they're doing. She'd take notes about what works and what doesn't and why. She loves these old movies that dissolve into total weirdness by the third act. She references Ziegfeld Girl and Busby Berkeley movies, which were an influence on Homeworld's style. She subscribes to a philosophy attributed to Bob Fosse that characters have to be feeling something strongly if they're compelled to sing. She makes a reference to A Goofy Movie as a movie that moved from a TV show to a movie. She wished that movie had more songs.
Susana and Rebecca discuss the movie, some intense moments, the history of Goofy and how different some of the old versions of him are, and how a description of Goofy by Art Babbitt was influential on her. She loves that cartoons can be so many things, and she adores studying moments from them and incorporating them. There are some really horrifying discoveries you can make, but you can also reinterpret some of the beautiful moments and stir them together to get new brilliance.
Susana says many songs in Steven Universe become the centerpiece of an episode, but in "Mr. Greg" it's more like a typical musical even though it's an episode of a cartoon show. Rebecca agrees that it was great practice for the movie. She was more moved by that episode coming back than any other so far by that point. She also felt that "For Just One Day Let's Only Think About (Love)," the song, was a great practice musical song--especially since there's all that chatting in between singing. That song was really influenced by A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum's song "Comedy Tonight." She finds those kinds of musicals so much fun. She was influenced in "Mr. Greg" by Victor/Victoria--specifically the song "Crazy World" when the camera is panning around the protagonist (who's wearing a suit). They're of course dated, but they contain beautiful moments. She took home some of the Pearl drawings from "It's Over, Isn't It" when she went to the studio in Korea. (Yes, Steven Universe is animated on paper, though the color is digital.) Elaborating on "Mr. Greg," she says the episode became much simpler and sweeter--originally there was some intense stuff in there, like Pearl picking up cars and throwing them at Greg.
Back to the movie, Susana points out that Rebecca's been studying how to make a conversion to a cinematic story versus a really long TV episode. What makes something feel like a movie? Rebecca struggles to figure out how to talk about it without saying too much. She figures you have to dig into the fundamentals of the show--make a movie about something new, but something basic. She loved the Dexter movie and it was so smart. Rebecca has a weird connection to the Beavis and Butt-Head movie too (some of her crew worked on the movie!), but she thinks even that movie is smart because they're all about watching TV and in the movie their TV is taken.
Susana then asks about the movie length format and how it felt from going from a very short TV format to a movie. Rebecca's word to describe it is "terrifying." The episode "Change Your Mind" was 44 minutes and that was a ridiculously long format for them--but it carried the extra baggage of tying up so much of what they'd dumped into the show. Rebecca said they couldn't really even "feel good" about finishing it because the immediate next step was something that was so much more of everything hard about "Change Your Mind." Rebecca elaborates on the elements that were ramped up for the movie and concludes "What I'm trying to say is I'm really tired." She's really, really excited for us to see it. It's so different than a bunch of episodes tied together, even if it was eight "Mr. Greg" episodes. All the pieces have to be awesome and then tied together have all the pieces inform each other. She remembers being impressed by anime as a kid because it usually told interconnected stories, and she thought that would be really hard; turns out self-contained episodes are even harder, and she has to kind of do both on her show. She thinks of her songs like that too--they must be good on their own, but they enhance each other by all being part of the same work and building something better together.
Finally, Susana asks what comes next after Steven Universe--one day, when the show does end, what does Rebecca want to do? Well, take time off, write some guitar songs, write poetry no one will ever see, and so on. Rebecca says that her head is really in SU now though, and there's so much more to do--yes, there is more to tell that comes after the movie, and she wants us to know there are also stories that belong in that two-year gap between the end of "Change Your Mind" and the beginning of the movie, but she feels this is a good place to stop talking. She's so excited about everything we have yet to see.
