In light of the murder of a trans woman in my state being ruled as "manslaughter", I'd like to just say that I hate when people say the phrase "gay/trans/bi panic" as a cutesy way to say a queer person is flustered about flirting or whatever.

If you don't know, the "gay/trans panic" defence is a legal defence that lets people claim they ~simply couldn't help themselves~ when they attacked/murdered a queer person because their bigoted rage made them temporarily insane. It's a horrible phrase that makes my stomach drop every time I read/hear it, even coming from other queer people.

This defence was only fully outlawed in my country in 2020, and as mentioned there's a recent case that reduced the murder of a trans sex worker IN HER OWN HOME to manslaughter for reasons that sound pretty much exactly like the panic defence.

So if you didn't know this was a thing, now you do. If you like the phrase or have used it, I'm not telling you to writhe with guilt or even to stop. But at least you'll know there are other associations with that phrase in the LGBT community, and it's been the cause of many unjust deaths.

Crossbones by Kimberly Vale: The tightness of the worldbuilding without sacrificing of high-stakes action hooked me immediately. I love the mood, the vibe, where it seems we're going. The complete swerve of info-dumping is laudable. I'm engaged in this world immediately and can't wait to see where it leads. (5/5)

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows: I have tried this in audio a few times, and feel as though something's been going over my head. Reading it physically appears to be much more engaging. I think because it's written in first person, it carries that Fantasy Speak which I suppose is easier to parse in my own head – i can fill in gaps if i think i've missed something instead of rewinding 80 times. So far, it sounds amazing! The worldbuilding is complex and i've quickly imprinted on Vel as a character voice. My only worry is the Fantasy Speak (and in turn their terms, politics, etc.) slowing me down a bit. (4/5)

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness: I have started this a number of times and it is dry. Like. Too dry to even fall asleep to (as it doesn't engage my own thoughts). But it's such a long one (and kinda older? I think?) that I feel like I've got to give it more time to let itself be known. She does get to the ~special manuscript~ very quickly, but we start as an academic in a library, which is really only engaging when you're doing it yourself, imo. Lotta info-dumping about her heritage that I don't care to retain yet. Something about alchemy. (1/5)

The City & The City by China Mieville: There's an intro of a murder scene that reads like almost every police procedural, but it's sprinkled with subtle worldbuilding that adds a layer of interest. The beat of seeing into the other city at the end was off-putting. I'm engaged enough to keep reading, but the tone and delivery put me in mind of straightfoward magical realism, which may or may not ultimately work for me. (4/5)

In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead: The tone of this is engaging, as one expects of a thriller. I do not like our narrator. So far, I doubt I'll be able to refrain from comparing this to If We Were Villains the whole time, which i doubt will be a favorable comparison. However. If the driving force of the thriller-tone persists, I may enjoy it. Short(er) chapters are working in its favor. (2/5)

The Killing Moon by NK Jemisin: Engaging, as all her writing seems to be. Falls victim to the front-loading of the fantasy genre – lots of unfamiliar terms and practices, that we spend to time to explain. The weaving of the introduction and action are seamless, though. The next chapter appears to be an interlude, which I enjoyed in the fifth season. Longish chapters, maybe? Or I might have to adjust my ebook font. (3/5)

Fire Season by KD Casey: Either a real short chapter, or I spend through it. The leads have met nearly immediately, which is a great sign for a romance. They also seem to have chemistry already, which is impressive. There's little character nods already. I'm once again reminded why I liked the previous book in the series – this author's got a great gravitas of style. there's an anxiety pushing this chapter forward – a last-minute trade, from minors to majors on top of that – so I nearly sped-read. But. Intriguing. (5/5)

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE! The big news around here this past week was again weather-related. On Thursday we had some crazy thunderstorms but south of us, there was a “Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS)” tornado warning that was issued for the tornado that touched down near Evansville Wisconsin. That tornado tracked across Rock, Dane, and Jefferson Counties for 24.53 miles and packed wind speeds of 135 MPH, just 1 MPH shy of an EF3. The other tornado near Albany Wisconsin in Green County received a rating of a high-end EF1. This tornado was on the ground for 8.35 miles and had wind speeds of 110 MPH. These tornadoes are the first February tornadoes on record in Wisconsin’s state history. Daughter #2 lives down in that area but while they had warnings they just had high winds and thunderstorms. Grandson Thomas was hurt while playing at school back in December. Following directions from the doctors for the past weeks he was still favoring that leg. Thankfully his mother was vigilant knowing there was something still wrong even though Thomas didn't let it slow him down. Following an MRI earlier in the week we learned on Thursday he has multiple stress fractures in his foot and ankle and free fluid. He is now in a cast for 4 - 6 weeks. He is an active little boy so the next few weeks are going to be tough and he is upset he probably going to miss playing baseball this year. I am just glad that this was finally caught and that while it sucks to be in a cast now, I would hate to see what would have happened if had gone undiagnosed. A mother knows when there is something wrong with their child. On Friday I had an appointment with my primary doctor for a yearly Medicare Wellness Check. I am doing well but my blood sugar was a little high so we are adjusting my medication. I always joke that when I go see this guy he always tries to find something wrong. This time it was a nice visit talking about tests I could have in the future and that the past year I have felt better than I had in a while. Saturday we had a nice surprise. Daughter #1 came to visit so her dad could do her taxes and she brought Kaden and Remi along. The boys helped move some things around for us and Remi took down the polar bear inflatable outside. They did things in minutes that would have taken us all day. We are blessed that they don't live too far away for these quick visits. I just wish these boys wouldn't grow so fast. Every time I see them they seem to have grown several inches. The best thing was the great hugs they give that will keep me going until their next visit. This Nana loves those hugs!! A premissa básica do gênero Super Sentai resume-se a um grupo de cinco heróis que recebem poderes especiais e uniformes de cores distintas para combater monstros, que recebem o título de "O vilão da Semana". Quando os monstros crescem, eles usam veículos que se combinam para formar um poderoso Robô de batalha.
