a song analysis by me !!
I'd like to premise this analysis with the admittance that I have never read 'Dante's Inferno'. Appalling, I know, but I've been busy reading fanfics on Tumblr & complaining about Oscar Wilde. That being said, I've been hours upon hours of research prior to writing this, though that does not mean that my explanations will be entirely accurate. Feel free to correct me if any of my quotes/recitations are wrong !!
Now, despite being morbidly under qualified to speak on 'Dante's Inferno', I am grossly OVER qualified to speak on Hozier & his lyricism. That man and I have an unspoken connection (he's unaware of it, yes, but that does not make it any less tangible). I've written innumerable analyses for his songs—most of which reside in the depths of my journal & will never see the light of day.
Okay, so! Quick backstory on Dante's interpretation of Francesca and her lover, Paulo!
Francesca was a spirit encountered by Dante and Virgil in their journey through Hell. Paolo, grief-stricken and seemingly inconsolable, could only cry. Quote from Dante's narration after hearing Francesca's retelling of their love: "While thus one spirit spake // the other wail’d so sorely, that heartstruck // I through compassion fainting". Here we learn that Paolo's sorrow is striking enough to cause Dante to faint (which I've begun to learn isn't uncommon).
Their story itself, however, can be described by solely one word: tragic. I will include quotes for everything I can find, though I am not the best at translating ancient english. That being said, some of these descriptions are taken from others' accounts (which can be found at the bottom of this post under 'sources').
Francesca da Rimini was an Italian noblewoman of Ravenna. She was the daughter of Guido I da Polenta, who was lord of Ravenna (could not personally find proof of this, though many recite it as truth). In a play of politics, Francesca's hand was given to a man of whom she'd never met—Giovanni Malatesta. The date of their marriage is unknown, though the end occurred upon Giovanni's discovery of his wife's clandestine love for his younger brother, Paolo Malatesta. Their marriage was not ended, however, in court with divorce papers. Instead, it'd ended on a blade when Giovanni murdered his wife and his kin.
Francesca, of course, recounts it in a much more romantic light when recounting it to Dante. "Loving brought us to one death" she had said regarding the fate of which was wrought by her infidelity turned reverence. Francesca had believed her husband to wear the face of Paolo, thus falling in love with him at first sight. To her dismay, however, he'd simply been the stand-in for his elder sibling/her arranged husband. The revelation of this truth did not stunt their shared love, though, as they decided to continue it via rendezvous.
Together, Francesca and Paolo read books that she deemed to have depicted their personal tale of love. "Alone we were, and no // suspicion near us. Ofttimes by that reading // our eyes were drawn together, and the hue // fled from our alter’d cheek. But at one point // alone we fell". Here, Francesca describes the yearning she and Paolo felt for one another while enveloped in solitude. Their eyes met, their cheeks flushed, and their hearts fell. Simple as that. And, due to love's apparent simplicity, they kissed. "Kiss’d // by one so deep in love, then he, who ne’er // from me shall separate, at once my lips // all trembling kiss’d". She describes Paolo as 'the who never shall separate from me'. From there, she says that they didn't do much reading, after that, and allowed the book & the writer to bear witness to their love. "The book and writer both // Were love’s purveyors. In its leaves that day // We read no more."
Needless to say, Giovanni was not happy when he learned of their affair. And, in a fit of rage and jealousy, killed them both. From death, the pair of lovers sank into the depths of Hell—in where they reside in the second ring devoted to the sin of lust. There, they are spun through the winds of an endless hurricane that represents the relentless dizziness of their sin. "Into a place I came // Where light was silent all. Bellowing there groan’d // A noise as of a sea in tempest torn // By warring winds. The stormy blast of hell // With restless fury drives the spirits on // Whirl’d round and dash’d amain with sore annoy." << Dante's depiction of lust's ring.
Now we can, finally, get into the song itself!
Do you think I'd give up That this might've shook the love from me Or that I was on the brink? How could you think, darling, I'd scare so easily?
Hozier's recount of this tale is told from Francesca's perspective. Here, she speaks to Paolo and asks if he truly believed her to be spineless enough to back down from their devotion for one another in the face of simple death. She claims to be undeterred by the notion of dying, so long as it's done with him at her side.
In fact, Hozier states in an interview these words: "there is no life in which i make any other choice but to love you". In this, it is rather apparent that Francesca withholds no intent to leave or abandon Paolo even whilst condemned to an eternal punishment in Hell.
Now that it's done There's not one thing that I would change My life was a storm, since I was born How could I fear any hurricane?
Here, Francesca is looking back on all of which occurred and, still, claims to be willing to redo all of it. She would make the exact same choices even if she were to have taken a glimpse into the future of their endless suffering. She would change nothing. She would still have read novels by his side and, there, she would still have met his eye with a hue of red adorning her cheeks. She would, still, die alongside him.
She also deems her life to have been a storm since her birth, relating the turmoil of her existence with the hurricane endured following her untimely demise. This fact considered, how could Paolo possibly expect her to fear the fate laid at their feet?
If someone asked me at the end I'll tell them put me back in it Darling, I would do it again, ah, ah If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I'd go through it again, ah, ah I would still be surprised I could find you, darling In any life If I could hold you for a minute Darling, I would do it again, ah, ah
Oh my God, can someone fucking sedate me??? This song will never fail to amaze me with its undeniable eloquence and symbolism. Fuck you, Hozier, for writing something so emotionally devastating. Nobody could ever compete with your brilliance & you've ruined music for me.
These two stanzas are my second and third favorites within the entirety of this song (if you could not already tell). Here, Francesca repeats the confession of her willingness to do it all again so long as Paolo is present for her to cradle and kiss. Or, in the words Hozier spoke within an interview: "being clung to your side for all of eternity is no punishment whatsoever" (I'm literally going insane what the fuck is his problem).
For all that was said Of where we'd end up at the end of it When the heart would cease Ours never knew peace
Kill me kill me kill me kill me I'm writing this at three in the morning with a pounding migraine and now I'm crying because I'm on my period & Hozier is literally ending my life (he must've taken notes from Giovanni).
In this verse, Francesca mentions past conversations regarding their fates and what their souls would be treated with. She then counters this via claiming her and Paolo's lives to have been relentless in their suffering, even prior to being damned to endure it eternally. Killme
What good would it be on the far side of things? It was too soon When that part of you was ripped away A grip taking hold Like a cancer that grows Each piece of your body that it takes
As someone who bore witness to the effects of cancer infiltrating the body of someone I loved dearly, Hozier's metaphor in this verse is absolutely sickening in its rawness. He relates the growing, gripping, and grating of cancer to the descent of Paolo—which can be interpreted as his descent toward Hell itself or his descent toward the grief we see him embodied by in Dante's writing. I have also seen people theorize that this verse is in Paolo's perspective & that he is writing of his love for Francesca, thus referring to her descent toward adultery and his shamelessness in having wrung it from her.
But, regardless of how you spin it, the entirety of this verse and this song as a whole is undeniably stunning in its prose. Paolo's mental deprivation being used as the personification of cancer's depiction on the human body/soul is just absolutely breathtaking.
[Chorus again] I would not change it each time (I would not change it each time) Heaven is not fit to house a love (Heaven is not fit to house a love) Like you and I (like you and I)
I have no words.
I've actually fucking run out of words.
Goodbye.

this fandom….man, oh, man….they believe anything and everything. it’s actually insufferable. we have less than 2 weeks until season 4 starts filming, i need them to put out the sophie announcement NOW. this is just ridiculous, like this is not marvel. it’s bridgerton. i still believe masali is 100% sophie. these people don’t get she cannot be a gender bent michael, that’s literally incompatible with how they wrote the world of bridgerton. it doesn’t work lol.
Honestly it’s no coincidence that those peddling this crap all have variations of the same MO.
I was not born yesterday. Anybody can come into someone’s inbox (anonymously) and say whatever they please. Anybody can claim they have a source/friend who works in the industry/at Netflix/is a journalist(seriously I’ve never seen this many people who have such friends). Anybody can claim they are a journalist or work at Netflix.
These people have claimed it all yet no one has provided a shred of actual evidence(ex. stills or audio) to back up their claims. Most of their claims don’t make any sense(Benedict is next yet they haven’t casted Sophie and he’s going to have a threesome with a man?) and they constantly contradict each other(sister vs. cousin thing when John is a confirmed only child; Eloise is next, no Benedict is next, no Francesca is next🤦🏽♀️).
If you’ve read the books or paid any attention to the show at all those claims straight up make 0 sense. Benedict is supposed to be just floating around fiddling life away right before Sophie comes in. He’s right on target in the show.
Michael’s gender is just as integral to the plot as Sophie’s. Michael becomes the Earl of Kilmartin because he is John’s closet male kin(they are first cousins via their fathers who were twins). He has severe guilt because of that. He is a rake and had quite the reputation because he is a man and men are afforded to do as they please. Fran struggles with her fertility and decides to remarry because she wants children. You change Michael’s gender and you change everything about WHWW.
Not to mention that as the Bridgerton verse stands gay marriage is illegal. Gay people have to live in hiding. Fran and this fanmade character they have come up with cannot have a happy ending.
I see y’all trying to compare your delusions to Benophie, but while they aren’t exactly taking part in society, Sophie was Benedict’s legal wife. They have children and they have a life together where they don’t have to hide their love and their union.
If that isn’t enough think of the money Netflix/the pun locs hers would be losing out on making such a fucking idiotic decision. Selling a gender-bent WLW tragic romance to a mostly straight women audience will not go over well.
Or how about how it would look casting Masali, a dark skinned Black woman, in a role meant for a man.
I’m just going to come out and say it, a large part of this fandoms gullibility is due to the fans inherit anti-Blackness.
Even though this show is a Shondaland production, Shonda herself is a Black woman, and she prides herself on creating content for Black people, they don’t want a Masali to play Sophie Beckett.
That’s where these rumors begin and end. With people not wanting Masali or any other Black woman(cause even if Masali isn’t Sophie not for one moment do I think that Sophie won’t be Black) to be Sophie Beckett.
So with that said, until I see the last two episodes with my own eyes (or by some miracle they let Masali appear with Luke on The View or GMA next week)I refuse to believe the lies of the deluded.
#bnask#bnasks#bridgerton#benophie#like this is just a show#but at the same time this feels very targeted and the intentions aren’t good#sophie beckett#we want Michael not Michaela Shonda/Jess

You know it's bad when you make a playlist about the hyperfixation
Anyway I tried to put songs I didn't see on other playlists cause I feel like everyone defaults to mother mother
Some highlights under the cut, i would put them all if i didn't have a 30 images limit lol
I like to put songs in order based on the chronological order of the story so the mood of the lyrics actually fits the vibe and all
Also so many of these are Toga POV
The Garden is a song about being queer in a religious community and idk I feel like Togachako's whole "weird" thing they had going on was also for being queer and anyway, Ochako repressed her feelings a lot and I like to see this verse as Himiko telling her to stop repressing herself

I can only imagine this as them talking to each other cause some things fit Himiko and some Ochako and this song generally just makes me depressed tbh

They're so Dear Arkansas Daughter coded. The "as my love for you dies" are Himiko after Ochako tells her she deserves whatever's coming to her.

Himiko again, same thing as before.

Still Himiko cause despite it all, despite how mad and angry and "that's strange cause I don't think about you anymore" she's still hung up about it.

This one is both of them tbh

Depending on the verse it fits them both

Himiko during the second war with the sad man's death parade

Their fight in general tbh

This song is about a relationship that's basically over but neither of the people in the relationship actually end it and like,,, Himiko,,,, cause Togachako was doomed and Himiko didn't want anything to do with Ochako but Ochako wouldn't let her quit and kept reaching for her,,,

Himiko.

I'm still replaying my strangers edit in my head 24/7 like it's rotating inside a microwave. (Also this song's actual meaning is definitely not romantic but the theme of cannibalism with these two breaks me cause like,,, yeah Ochako lived in the end but imagine her body reacted badly for a bit to Himiko's blood like,,, "If i'm turning in your stomach and I'm making you feel sick",,, i fucking love this song,,,)

both.

Ochako cause she could literally spot her tears in a sea of clones.

Do I even need to explain myself.

Francesca by Hozier THE love song. Also obvious Ochako pov along with the next few songs.

This song is SO important to me, no one gets "we'll never have sex" like I do ok- that said: Himiko.

Ochako. I'm making myself cry over my own playlist.

I literally plan on tattooing this song on my skin, NO ONE GETS HUNGER LIKE I DO, again Himiko, I'm starting to see a pattern maybe I kin her.

Between two lungs is about sharing a breath during a kiss literally and i feel like it fits their blood transfusion so badly-

Himiko's resolve as she dies happily. I'm in denial sure but it's what happened. But I'm in denial.

Ochako's grief process yay (kill me)

The end. I'm sad. I'm gonna go cry.
#mha#togachako#himiko toga#ochako uraraka#Spotify#my playlists#bnha#uratoga#himichako#i'm so sad and thorn up about them it's not even funny at this point#they haunt my every thought

a list of hozier songs to remind you of the ineffable divorce the happily married ineffable husbands
[From Eden] I slithered here from Eden / Just to sit outside your door
[Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene] I watch the work of my kin, bold and boyful / Toying somewhere between love and abuse / Calling to join them, the wretched and joyful / Shaking the wings of their terrible youths
[Sunlight] A soul that's born in cold and rain / Knows sunlight, sunlight, sunlight / And at last can grant a name / To a buried and burning flame / As love and its decisive pain
[Take Me to Church] There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
[Francesca] Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
[Like Real People Do] I will not ask where you came from / I will not ask and neither should you / Honey, just put your sweet lips on my lips / We should just kiss like real people do
[To Be Alone] But I don't know what else that I would do / Than try to kiss the skin that crawls from you / Then feel your weight in arms I'd never use
[Unknown / Nth] You called me angel for the first time / My heart leapt from me / You smile now, I can see its pieces still stuck in your teeth / And what's left of it, I listen to it tick / Every tedious beat going unknown as any angel to me
[All Things End] The last time I felt your weight on my chest, you said / "We didn't get it right, but love, we did our best" / And we will again
[Nobody] I wouldn't fall for someone / I thought couldn't misbehave / But I want you to know that / I've had no love like your love
[Be] Be there and you stare as you stand / Or be like that rose you hold in your hand / That will grow bold in a battered and desolate land / Oh, lover, be good to me
[Would That I] With the war of the fire / My Heart moves to its feet / Like the ashes of ash / I saw eyes in the heat / Feel it soft and as pure as snow / Fell in love with the fire long ago

ficletvember 2023 - day 9
twn francesca/fringilla
In the wake of Thanned, Fringilla and Francesca both struggle with sleep.
Returned to Xin'trea, Fringilla slept poorly.
There had been a time when she found the beds in the capital to be the most luxurious she had ever slept in, the rooms indulgent and inviting. The halls had gleamed with brilliant marble. The gardens had flourished, awash in color.
Nilfgaardian army camps knew few comforts, even for high-ranking mages, and she had spent months on a threadbare bedroll among stinking latrines and crass infantrymen. In the wake of defeat at Sodden, she had endured grueling marches as she pushed the stragglers and their prisoners south.
After the pillow of tree roots and seeping night rain, even the most plain Xin'trean bedchamber had been an exquisite comfort.
It should have been the same after freeing herself from a reeking dungeon. No more mildewed straw and muck of the overflowing chamberpot. Returned victorious from Thanned, the favor of the Emperor once more hard-won, Fringilla should have slept like a milk-drunk babe.
Instead, despite her bone-deep exhaustion, she lay awake.
She needed a drink.
With freedom from the wine-stained dungeons, it should have followed that she could not stomach the stuff, but instead it was the lucidity of the sober quiet that she could not bear.
The corridors that led to the palace wine storage were familiar enough now for her to navigate in the faint light from the moon, so familiar that there was no need to even leave her bed. She closed her eyes, followed the path with her thoughts, and tugged a bottle from a shelf into her hands.
A frivolous waste of magical energy.
Fringilla could not bring herself to feel any shame over it. Not any longer.
A hot curl of shame did strike her when a knock came in the small hours of the morning and she opened the door of her chambers to a tear-stricken Francesca. The elf was resplendent in a gauzy nightdress, exceedingly beautiful even in her grief, and Fringilla’s heart dropped to her stomach at the sight of her.
If either of them had good reason to drink themselves to sleep each night, it was Francesca.
In scarcely a year, she had lost her long-awaited newborn babe, her brother, her partner, and countless kin. Even the elves’ recent victory at Thanned and glorious return to Xin’trea had come at the price of denying the Scoia’tael from its refuge. It was a city of elders and the sick. Francesca herself a puppeted queen of a scorned realem
What sorrow had Fringilla ever known that compared to that?
She had stared down at her uncle’s body and felt nothing at all. No kinship. No regret.
Nothing to compare to the burden of Francesca’s loss.
Beckoning her in, Fringilla burgeoned the fire high with a word and summoned a glass to pour wine for the both of them, as though she hadn’t been sitting up in bed taking long pulls straight from the bottle.
She felt almost sober, though these days, it was hard to tell.
Rather than settle in a chair by the fire, Francesca accepted her glass of wine and settled in Fringilla’s bed. The covers had been mussed by her endless tossing and turning, and something about the sight of the elf sitting there, light by the fire and staring pensive into the blood-red wine, made Fringilla feel like weeping herself.
Neither spoke. What could truly be said?
Fringilla settled cross-legged on the bed, feeling like a girl. Though as a girl in Aretuza, she had never sat beside another in the dwindling hours of night the way other girls had. No one had liked her enough. Too uptight, too bookish. Francesca would not have liked her then. Perhaps was only here now because Fringilla had inserted herself into the fray at Thanned at the last moment and by chance, she was still her now.
As Francesca leaned to press their wine-stained mouths together, Fringilla’s first thought was imagining the likelihood of such a thing occurring in a world where Filavandrel had lived. Elves were not chaste and monogamous partners by any means, but what could Fringilla give that another lover couldn’t?
All that drew them together was the loss they had shared.
In the pool of the sheets, Fringilla touched her mouth to soft skin that she had ached to touch for ages and wished to be more wine-drunk than she was.

I have two kin questions!!!
Do you ever get tempted to dye your hair similar to either of your kintypes? (Ik I have and done so and I wonder if others feel the same)
And how would you describe what Francesca (I hope I spelt that right) looks like? Does it differ from Canon (Ik my Kins do)
/Not forced (No pressure to answer)
For the first one: sometimes I want to do my hair like Ula's. I'm afraid of hair dye though.
Francesca's appearance? I have a few pictures actually.
(Both are redrawn from official Monster High art, the left being box art and the right being from the IDW comics.) Ula isn't really accurate here, I can't draw body weight correctly.

Thats all very interesting to hear /gen, I get the last part, oftentimes the monster high characters get sexualized and it often grosses me out to no end, even if my kins were adults, the canonical characters are still minors.
And thank you! Honestly letting you in on a little thing, Frankie was just my nickname, my name was actually Francesca. As much as others dont know much about monster high I swear everyone can recognise draculaura from a distance. I get a little envious about that but hey, I don't mind. I mean why would I get upset my wife gets recognition? (Yeah, the wife mention in my previous ask was about Draculaura dhdg) There's def more layers, I actually have a headshot drawing of how I looked as Frankie that I submitted to a kinhelp blog.
Not knowing the other monsters was.. Something I didnt really care about I guess? Because I didn't really care that I didn't know anyone besides like, Drac. Fun fact, her name wasn't Draculaura either.
- @batty-babbles
That's interesting to hear ^^
Sorry this isn't a super detailed response, I feel a bit overwhelmed today :')

"This is a back and forth you won't win." Iorveth rolled his eye. It really wasn't that big of a deal so he wasn't sure why she had latched onto it so tightly. His hands remaining in his pockets. "I know what I care about. It's just very select things." His people was the main thing. Revenge against Francesca, Vernon... Those who hurt his kin. He just didn't wear his emotions on his sleeve. Except rage. That could be gotten out of him quite easily. "It was." He had just been a kid when it happened. When the cities started to be destroyed by humans. "Not many can." His voice not showing much emotion but he remembered it all. "Maybe. We will see." He spent a lot of time perched around for his work. there wasn't a lot of time to explore. "Take it as you will."
"or you could just tell me." lexi countered, as if she were prying. yet she still remained unbothered, almost aloof as she looked over at the other. "awwww, you know that's what they always say. then oops, you find something to care about." it was something she knew all too well. it was those closed off types, they always found something that would weasel their way in. part of her was curious to see exactly what it would be for the other. but in the end she shrugged her shoulders. "that sounds awful," she sympathized as she looked over at the other. "i can't imagine." mostly because once she became a vampire she never stayed anywhere long; she was always moving. "well---it's not the same, i know, but if you get the chance? just explore the city. i promise you there is a lot of good you are probably missing out on" though at his next words she couldn't help but chuckle. "see, i love hearing the words 'i told you so' so now this just seems like a challenge."

Duchess of Dol Blathanna
Chest 1: Francesca abhorred her father’s reluctance to meet the dh’oine on the field of battle. She saw his isolation from external affairs as a cowardly act, and one that spat in the face of all elves wishing to live free from persecution. But despite her incessant beseeching, Simlas refused to send his subjects to their slaughter and forbid his daughter from getting involved. Alas, his words fell on deaf ears. Inspired by the infectious rhetoric of the warrior elf Aelirenn, Francesca defied her father’s orders, mustered her kin, and joined the rebellion.
Chest 2: Simlas' forlorn prophecy came to be. The rebellion was short-lived, and in the wake of human conquest lay a generation of elves thoroughly suppressed and mercilessly slaughtered. Francesca was lucky enough to survive the doomed venture, yet her brash nature had cost her much. Most of her companions were dead, and the future potential of her race all but obliterated. In addition, her father, enraged by her betrayal, disowned her, vowing that words would never break between them again—a promise he would keep until the end of his days.
Chest 3: There was a time when Francesca’s decisions were guided by fiery impulse, governed by a desire to act swiftly in place of calculated tact. A lifetime of mistakes, however, can work wonders in cooling one’s hot-headedness, and slowly but surely, she became the dispassionate tactician her father had once wished her to be. But even he would recoil in horror to witness the pact she later made with the Nilfgaardian Emperor.
Scroll 1: There was a time in Francesca Findabair’s life when she did not even remotely consider the advantages of diplomatic tact. She believed direct action was the best way to ensure survival, especially when regarding humans—a race renowned for their lustful expanse and underhanded methods.
Scroll 2: When speaking of these oppressive foreigners, she frequently quoted her father, the elven Sage Simlas Finn aep Dabairr, regurgitating the words she had often heard during childhood. ‘Only those lacking sense,’ her father would spit with pure contempt, ‘would trust the word of a dh’oine.’
Scroll 3: Yet, her father had long since changed his tune regarding the humans. Or, at least, altered his pitch. For he had used a magical orb of insight to witness shimmers of the future, and saw that war with the ape-men would only lead to the annihilation of elves.
Scroll 4: Not wanting to lead his kind to their deaths, Simlas swallowed his pride and entered a peace treaty with the humans, hoping the act would save the elves from massacre. Unfortunately, he could not halt the incoming destruction, as forces both within and without conspired against him. And one such force bore the face of his unruly daughter.
