This week, we went to a new(ish) Filipino resturant that has opened up on the top floor of Kingly Court just off Carnaby Street called Donia. We feel like there's been a bit of a surge of Filipino places over the last few years in London with places like Kapihan, Mamasons, Kasa and Kin and Bong Bongs (although that has now closed). Having enjoyed a lot of them, we were keen to go give this new place a go.

First up was some pandesal. This is definitely a slightly more elevated version compared to the bakeries that we'd been to before. It came warm and both brushed with herb butter and next to a big ball of it too. The pandesal itself had a bit of crunch to it and a lovely sweetness to it; really nice!

Next up was the prawn and pork dumplings with crab. These were delicious! The dumpling wrapper was perfectly cooked with a bite to it and the flavours were incredibly more-ish.

These are on the menu as patatas but are essentially smashed potatoes. They had some really crispy bits to it where they'd been smashed a bit more and were really well seasoned.

You can't go to a Filipino place and not order lechon if it is on the menu. Compared to other lechon I've had, this definitely looked a bit fancier but was just as good. The sauce was a little sweet but very good and the pork itself was tender and juicy. The only little gripe I have with it is that the skin wasn't quite as crispy as I'd have liked. Still, a very tasty dish.

The other main that we ordered was the chicken inasal which is grilled marinated chicken. The chicken was intensely flavoured and was one of the juiciest chickens we've had in a long time! The topping of pickled onions were super tangy and went really well with the slightly creamy sauce it came with.

For dessert, we had the corn tart. Unfortunately, this was probably the most disappointing bit of the meal. The crust was just not quite as crispy as I'd like but the filling was really tasty. The crumble that came with it was also pretty good but the ice cream was pretty average.

All in all, this was a really nice meal with super tasty Filipino food. Personally, our favourites were the chicken inasal and the dumplings but it was all pretty good. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 | On the weekend I went down to @the_life_goddess in @kinglycourt Carnaby Street via @prsocialite to check out their new brunch menu. It’s a cute looking Greek restaurant serving up a very egg-based brunch with sweet options. We went for the SKG Breakfast Sandwich, which was 2 fried eggs in the middle of the bread, with chorizo, and also fried eggs on sourdough. (I’m sorry, I didn’t take a photo of the menu and it’s not online, so I can’t get the name). The food was in no way bad, I just didn’t think it was great. I thought it was a bit basic. The eggs on sourdough should have had a Greek butter with it, but it didn’t seem too evident. I think around £8 for a couple of eggs on a piece of bread wasn’t really justified. The sandwich was a bit better, but again just lacked a bit of character. For the sweet options we went for the Nutella and Black Forest fruit pancakes, and the filled croissant with morello cherry. I’m not sure what the croissant was meant to be filled with, but ours didn’t have anything inside, apart from what seemed like syrup. The croissant itself was a bit stodgy, and I don’t know if that was to do with the syrup inside. The pancakes too weren’t too soft, and just didn’t excite me. Unfortunately for me this brunch didn’t hit any spots, and even though I am very grateful to @the_life_goddess and @prsocialite for inviting me down, I HAVE to be honest with my experience. 𝙂𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙙 🍔 Not many people do a Mac & Cheese burger, and if they do they can’t pull it off, but @dirtyboneslondon have been getting it right for years. Double patty, pulled beef short rib, Mac & cheese, and espresso spiked bbq sauce. I first had this yeaaaars ago, so long ago that I had forgotten what it was like. Then I absolutely smashed it last year with their DIY kit. This time I left it to the pros when I went to check out their new pop up in @kinglycourt Carnaby St. @dirtyboneslondon have temporarily moved to the bottom floor whilst they get their new flagship location ready, but this means you can go al fresco whilst sipping on Monkey Nuts.
