This graphic novel takes the Scottish fairytale of the same name and reimagines it a bit. It starts with Sibylla and her sisters getting their fortunes told by a witch. Sibylla’s sisters want to know who they’ll marry. Sibylla wants to know what adventures she’ll be on, but, also does ask about who she’ll marry. And, finds out that she’ll fated to marry the Black Bull of Norroway. And so starts Sibylla’s adventure, although it never seems to take the path that she thinks it will.
It’s a typical fairy tale in that there are messages that aren’t always straight forward, curses, and the journey is part of the point as well as the destination. I also really liked the art, and, although it took a moment, I did get used to the pace and how the panels were being put together. It was a fun read and I can’t wait to read the second volume.
You may like this book If you Liked: The Witch's Throne by Cedric Caballes, The Last Unicorn by Peter B. Gillis, or The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman
Norroway, Vol. 1: The Black Bull of Norroway by Cat Seaton

Coven - Jennifer Dugan, Kit Seaton (Illustrations)
Tumblr media
Emsy has always lived in sunny California, and she'd much rather spend her days surfing with her friends or hanging out with her girlfriend than honing her powers as a fire elemental. But when members of her family's coven back east are murdered under mysterious circumstances that can only be the result of powerful witchcraft, her family must suddenly return to dreary upstate New York. There, Emsy will have to master her neglected craft in order to find the killer . . . before her family becomes their next target.

hi!! sorry to bother you, but could i ask if you've got any recs for witchy books or in the sort of context of witches?? idk if it makes sense. it's june so the perfect time for witches methinks 😅 thank you!
Just noting that I saw your followup that you're specifically looking for ideally Sapphic, and yes, I've def got recs for that! Personally, I'd start with These Witches Don't Burn, Mooncakes, and Labyrinth Lost, and in September I'm really looking forward to Coven by Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton (graphic novel) and How to Succeed in Witchcraft by Aislinn Brophy. In adult, you gotta go with Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper, and a few YAs I haven't read yet but hear great things about - Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley and The Scapegracers by H.A. Clarke.

2022 Reading Challenge Report
Creating this spread in my journal has become a highlight of my year. Past efforts are here: 2019, 2020, 2021. Each year I spend a little more time on my mini cover drawings and each year I'm a little happier with how they turned out.
My reading goal for the year was 100 books and I barely made it: 101. I had to really book it to reach my goal (heh, see what I did there)
Some years it's sort of hard to pick my "Best Books", but this year it was relatively easy. Eight books in particular really stood out. I could have just left it at eight, but there were two additional authors that I came across this year that I read several books by and am quite sure I will continue gobbling up their oeuvres as long as I can. (I've never in my life seen that word as a plural—can that be right?) So as a 9th pick, I just named them both: Ashley Herring Blake and Alexis Hall. I read several of Blake's books this year that would have absolutely changed my life if they'd been around when I was a kid/teen and Hall is here because literally everything he writes is fucking hilarious.

Read 25 Books by Black Women Authors: Only read 23
I think next year I won't do the Black Women Authors challenge. I hope I will still read as many or at least a significant number of books by Black women, and I think it's a really great idea. I'm going to resist doing it this year, though, because I noticed a crummy impulse in myself as I was keeping track of the books, like I was "getting credit" for reading books in this category and that feels kinda gross. We'll see how I do without striving for a cookie.
I would like to read more picture books in 2023, and maybe be a little choosier about the graphic novels I read. I really love graphic novels, but I read some clunkers this year. I was also pretty light on nonfiction and I'd like to read a little more this year. In any case, I know it will be another great year of reading! See you next year!

NEW GRAPHIC NOVEL COVER REVEAL!
So excited to let you all know about this baddie! A companion story to COVEN, written by the phenomenal Jennifer Dugan, also with Penguin Teen! August 27, 2024
AH-OOO 🐺 🐺 🐺
Cover design by Suki Boynton, illo by yours truly.
Le blurb droppeth 👇
Tessa feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Not at school, where she can’t figure out how to confess the feelings she has for her friend Maddie. And definitely not at home, where the other werewolves in her family make her feel like an outcast because she can’t even shift into her full wolf form yet. Sometimes she thinks her whole life would be easier if she wasn’t a werewolf at all.
When word gets out that a group of werewolf hunters has infiltrated her pack’s territory and that they’ve developed a cure that can make werewolves human, Tessa thinks she’s found the answer to her problems. But when she discovers there might be more to the hunters’ plans than anyone knows, it’s up to Tessa to put herself on the line to protect the lives of those she loves most. And the only way to save them is to embrace the wolf inside her that is howling to get out.

@apileofgoodthings11 sent me a message with book asks in it and I'm gonna answer it here.
I've already answered 1 so check that out here.
6. what books have you read in the last month?
So many, Pile, you know this! Why do this to me?! The Doctors Blackwell by Janice P Nimura; This is Our Story by Ashley Elston; Dustborn by Erin Bowman; The Dark Matter of Mona Starr by Laura Lee Gulledge; We Were Restless Things by Cole Nagamatsu; I Think Our Son Is Gay vol 2-4 by Okura; The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu; Medusa by Jessie Burton; Playing the Palace by Paul Rudnick; Chef's Kiss by Jarrett Melendez; Solo by Kwame Alexander; This Golden State by Marit Weisenberg; Norroway vol 1 and 2 by Cat and Kit Seaton; Hide by Kiersten White; Deadly Class vol 12 by Rick Remender; Vow of Thieves by Mary E Pearson; The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen; A Little Bit Country by Brian D Kennedy; Less by Andrew Sean Greer; Even Though I Knew the End by Cl Polk; Onion Skin by Edgar Camacho; Me and Sam-Sam Handle the Apocalypse by Susan Vaught (autistic MC!); A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson; The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys
15. recommend and review a book.
From the above list because they are the freshest in my mind, I'd highly recommend Me and Sam-Sam Handle the Apocalypse and The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys. Despite the title, Me and Sam isn't about the apocalypse but an event that feels like this, hyperbolically, to the main character. But we see an autistic girl make a friend, stand up to her bullies, save a bunch of people, show empathy for others, and be happily autistic. Truly amazing! It is a middle reader, so not for everyone, but I greatly enjoyed it. The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys is about Spain under Franco's regime. It starts in the 1950s where we meet all of our characters in their late teens, early twenties and we see their lives unfold and twine together. Then in 1975 after Franco dies, they come back together in a surprising way. I cried so hard through the last part of the book, but it was well written, the characters are so strong and I rooted for all of them.
19. most disliked popular books?
Hmm, well I usually avoid reading popular books to avoid this. For example, I'm currently not reading Where the Crawdads Sings or any Colleen Hoover because everyone is blowing up about them and I can't trust the opinions of such a large swath of the population.

This is the story of Boetema and Inotu. They’re brother and sister, and, they somehow both manage to get into trouble when their parents leave them to work as salt shepherds. Inotu hears a conversation he shouldn’t and is suddenly on the run from a cyborg. And, Boetema, well, she finds out that she can astrally project to other words, but, then someone gets hurt while she’s in another girl’s body on that world, and, so both siblings have problems to solve as they run from those chasing them towards the city of Yopan.
This book was amazing. The story pulled me in and made me care about these two characters and their journey, and the art. Holy crap the art by Kit Seaton was amazing, so so amazing. Wow.

AUTHOR: Jennifer Dugan, art by Kit Seaton
CATEGORY: Graphic Novel, YA
GENRE: Urban Fantasy
PUBLISHED: 2022

CW: Death of parents
VIBES: Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Kelly Thompson comic version) meets YA novel plot
TROPES/THINGS IN IT: Fall setting, witches/magic, hidden magical society, moving suddenly, complicated families, necromancy attempted
