The King President of the Most Glorious Nation State of Zilch in his capacity as "Commander In Chief" gets first pick of military research projects. It was in that capacity that he discovered the design for the Skorpiomega Tonk 9000. Designed by a dying cancer riddled child and arriving on his desk thanks to the "Make Happy the Sad Childrens" charitable organization.

The design includes "Turbo Death Lazer" and "Grabby Kill Claws" and "Built In Dad" Technology. Truly impressed by the specs of what is obviously some sort of prodigy, he put it forward into production. The end result was overly heavy, impossible to move, and the laser cannon proved to put out far too much Ionizing Radiation. It also turned out… that the design was a copy of the more reasonably constructed "SK-47" (pictured above) from the neighboring nation of Burgerstan. Thankfully the dying child was execute, and the MHSC foundation have been branded enemies of the Most Glorious Nation State of Zilch.

Lore Over! This was my first ever attempt at making a Tonk for a game of TONKS. But never finished it because I think the scale was off... but have since decided not to worry about and finish it up with additional valves and a new lid.

1984 Dune Spice Scout

This was my very quick scratchbuild of one of the barely seen vehicles in the 1984 film Dune.  A small ribbed plastic tree ornament, some scrap plastic shapes, and a plastic clothing hanger trimmed to length.

Accidentally stumbled across this photo set of the Dragonar Kai models, published in a 1987(?) special issue of B-Club magazine. Not sure if this includes any new images or info, but I thought I'd post it just in case. Click for the super big version.

A young dragon that voyages into lost and forbidden parts of the astral plane, or the space between stars, returns transformed into a horrifying star-famished beast. Leaning into cosmic horror, this dragon's theme is the unceasing hunger of a black hole, and the otherworldly awe of pulsing nebulae and dying stars. This is an aggressive beast that locks down its prey with gravitational power and light channeled from beings that live in pulsing, dying stars.

Sometimes, you just need to make a horrid beast. I know this is now incredibly late for Smaugust 2023, but when I saw a vacant-eyed, hollow dinosaur toy screaming at the sky I knew it was right for the prompt "Eldritch". But, I wanted to sidestep the expected 'tentacles like Cthulhu' approach, and so instead I used limbs from a toy lobster and other insects to give it some bony mandibles. The tongue was made by using a leftover tail from the dino that went into a previous build, with a UV resin coat, including a drip along a strand of transparent cotton to give it an icky strand of saliva.

The goal for this build was to gross myself out while making it, and to create a monster that implies something worse out there. And I admit that I love to hate looking at this one.

And with that, my Smaugust work is done for 2023. I'm planning on taking a short break from scratchbuilding to finish some sculptures and other WIPS.

Holy hell!

I honestly don't know which part of this conversion I'm most impressed by.

Sword, extremely metal.

Censer, very fiddly.

Texturing the underside of both boots, now that's dedication to the craft.

It's been a while since I built a truly big guy. Quite pleased with him so far! Just a few little bits to tidy up before I can start slapping some paint on him.

Like a bunch of miniature kitbashers I know, I decided to hop on the bandwagon of building a bot for BillMakingStuff's new wargame Bangarang in the Gutterlands!

Bill's style and vision is so well defined - a rusty and surreal post-apocalypse. Since that's less my vibe, I wanted to take his style of scratchbuilding and combine it with my JRPG fashionista approach.

Not an easy build, though - those legs were killer! Greenstuff was needed for its posability, but a lot of patiently holding it in place and haphazard superglue was needed to stop the whole thing from collapsing under its own weight. I'll have to do some cleanup of stray glue and greenstuff before I paint it!

Kitbashing/scratchbuilding

Kitbashing is when you take lots of components from a bunch of different model kits and use them to make something else entirely. It's very similar to scratchbuilding, or junk building, which is when you take things like used boxes, packaging or broken toys and repurpose them for a model.

The video on Howl's moving castle uses a mixture of the two, for example, he repeatedly uses pieces from old Gundam models for different purposes throughout the castle whereas the robot is just a bunch of scrap pieces put together.

I've done a little bit of kitbashing with a friend in my previous project and sometimes it was quite easy and others I had some parts that I wanted to use but didn't know how.

This was the finished result. Aside from the wool, you can see that we mostly used computer parts for the robot.
