Better late than never, but here is my tribute to ten whole years of the masterpiece that is PACIFIC RIM!
Oh, man. I had started this some time last year, and then I stepped away from it for a few months. I was scared half to death I wasn't gonna be able to finish it without starting the whole thing over. Thankfully, I was able to figure out which colors I used (I didn't clean my palette from the last time I worked on it), and by simply telling myself to just DO it, I managed to pull it off.

why is pacific rim 2 noncanon in the hearts of the wise and the wizened
so fucking glad you asked. heres ur essay babe
pacific rim uprising is non-cononical in the hearts of the wise because much of the core themeing in the first movie is absent in the second.
kaiju have always and will always be a metaphor for disaster. more specifically, nuclear disaster or war, man made issues. this extends to pacific rim, presenting the kaiju as a force that is unrelenting and unceasing. along with this though, it has humanity fighting against the kaiju, hand in hand. this is a story about fighting against the odds, recognizing you might not win and still fighting tooth and nail for another second.
the enemy is all present, rapidly increasing in threat, and unrelenting.
in the second movie, the steaks are nothingburger. my personal opinion, it never gets serious without immediately backing down.
the first movie is about human connection, too. how family fights with you for a common goal, how sometimes these ideas will clash, but how love will keep you together. its about connection not needing to be spelled out. its about mourning your dead and visiting their graves while making new friends. its about introducing those we have lost in war to those we know in times of peace through memories.
the second movie promptly introduces an as yet unheard of son of pentecost. this is mainly crazy because so much of the first movie focuses on familial bonds. including pentecosts mentor bond to mako, who he worried himself sick over and refused to let see combat. but he is sloppily injected into the narrative after the fact, despite pentecost being the sort of man that, although stern to a fault, will and has cared for the people under him with his life.
pacific rim is ultimately a story that ties itself up nicely. the rift is sealed, the kaiju are dead. there is a moment of relief. the monsters are gone, so are some of the ones we’ve loved. this world has been changed by this violence. but thank god we have made it through.
pacific rim: uprising, in my personal opinion, should have focused more on the “where do we go from here.” the first movie zoomed in on personal relationships and showed off scale. the people were smaller so the robots and the monsters, the threats they faced and how they fought them, seemed even bigger.
but uprising is nothingburger no sauce. not even bun. the people are the enemies and the giant fuck off robots arent even cool anymore now that they dont have monsters to fight. its conflict for the sake of conflict
