ch. 17 - home sweet home

Lucy and Tim move into their new house. Plus, some final wedding prep, and a party or two. 

April 1, 2025

They spend the next couple of weeks dividing their time between work and packing up and getting rid of the things they know they won’t take to their new house. Time seems to go by slowly, but before either of them know it, it’s already the morning of the first of April, and they’re on their way to soon-to-be officially their new house. They’re meeting Diane and the listing agent who sold the house at eleven thirty, and the excited energy in the car is palpable. All three of them wear matching grins on their faces as they finally pull up outside the house and get out of the car. And even Kojo appears to be smiling when Tamara lets him hop out and grabs his leash.

They spot Diane on the porch by the front door, standing next to the listing agent and an older couple they don’t recognize.

Diane greets them with a bright smile. “Hi, Lucy. Tim. And Tamara, nice to see you again, too.”

“Hi,” she grins back. “And that’s Kojo,” she adds, pointing to the canine sitting by her feet.

Diane grins and bends down to say hi and scratch behind his ears, earning herself an appreciative little growl.

“You remember David Mitchell, from the open house,” she continues as she stands back up.

They nod in confirmation, exchanging hellos.

“And this is Donna and Craig Johnson. The now former owners of the house,” she smiles.

“Oh, hi. Nice to meet you,” Lucy says, actually excited to meet the couple who had lived here up until now.

“Hi, I hope you don’t mind we just showed up here today,” Donna starts a bit apologetically.

“Oh, no. Not at all,” Lucy reassures her.

“We just had to meet the couple- family who’s going to be moving in here. We have.. so many great memories here. You’re going to love it.”

“I’m sure we will,” Tim agrees with a grin.

“And in order for you to do that, you’re gonna need this,” David says, holding up the key to the house.

Lucy grins excitedly, bouncing on the balls of her feet.

“And we also need one final signature from both of you. I know, you’ve signed more than enough stuff over the last couple of months, but I promise this is the last one. At least where this is concerned.”

Chapter 1 ~ Tim’s Feelings

Lucy Chen, his rookie had slowly grown on him. It started out as how he usually trained any rookie. He was a hard ass. He honestly didn't have that much faith in her. He wasn't convinced she would cut it as an officer for the LAPD. Lucy didn't waiver. She endured all his 'Tim Tests'. Tests that would usually break his rookies. Even just a little, did not break Lucy...Not even in the slightest. Tim began to realize his newest boot was for real.

As he continued to be her TO. a friendship slowly started to blossom. Tim, of course was still hard on her but only because he knew she could handle it. He had no doubt in his mind she was going to excel as a police officer and he was dedicated to preparing her for excellence.

Through this time, with many reservations Lucy had become Tim's friend. Close friends even. She had wormed her way into his life much to his dismay.

That fateful day, where Tim pulled his 'friend' out of the barrel and breathed life back into her. This was a game changer. As Lucy was sobbing. He just held her tight up against his chest. Cradling his hand around the back of her head. He hadn't lost her. Thinking in that moment what she had just endured. Tim was angry, anyone hurting or even touching his girl broke him. 'his girl'. He realized in that very moment, she was much more than his friend.

"I can't have feelings for Lucy. How did this happen?

There wasn't anything he could do. He couldn't stop this wave of emotions that was hitting him. His heart belonged to her. The worst part was he knew nothing could ever happen.

Tim was by Lucy's bedside in the hospital all night. Even though, when she woke up, he played it cool and told her he hadn't been there all night. Lucy knowing her TO and friend did not believe what he was saying for a second. Lucy was safe and only staying in the hospital for observation , being released the next day. She convinced Tim to go home. She was OK.

"Tim, Go home. Shower. Get some rest and see our boy"

"OK. If you need anything, please call me. I will check in later"

Tim arrived home. He was excitedly met by Kojo. Tim changed his clothes and took 'their' boy for a walk.

"Well my boy. Mama is OK. I sure know now why you get so excited when you see her. She's something special, isn't she?"

"Woof! Woof"

"I feel the same. I love her just like you do. I can't act on those feelings. Not now, anyway but I sure hope someday. Maybe, one day the three of us will be a family"

"WOOF! WOOF!"

Chapter 2 ~ Lucy’s Feelings

When Lucy realized her feelings for Tim.

There had been a few moments where Lucy's feelings were apparent. Definitely, after the harrowing Caleb ordeal and knowing how Tim saved her life, changed things. What really shifted her feelings was after her best friend Jackson, was killed. Her heart had been shattered. Jackson had been her best friend since the academy, He was also Lucy's roommate. Going on without him seemed daunting. Lucy and Jackson were rookies together, and had been through so much together. Not having that constant in her life seemed unimaginable.

After watching the video where he was killed. It was like living in her own nightmare. She was doing everything to not go home. Tim offered his place. Lucy, of course, did not want to impose. They were friends, sure they were. But she felt like she would be a burden. He reassured her that she shouldn't be alone and that's when she finally agreed. The emotions of the day were overwhelming. Lucy felt like she was going to break. Tim asked if there was anything she needed.

"A hug"

That alone made her nervous. Was this crossing a line? Friends hug each other all the time, especially when going through a hard time...Right?. Lucy was overanalyzing everything, which was just how she is. He also held her close after he saved her. They have comforted one another before. "Lucy...snap out of it" She thought to herself.

Next thing she knew, he was pulling her close to him for a hug. It felt electric. The comfort no one else could give her. The comfort she needed from the only man she wanted it from.

Chapter 3 ~ Denial

The power of denial for both Tim and Lucy.

As time passes. Both Lucy and Tim hit a wall of denial. To be fair, them being together would add complications to their careers. It would be worse for Tim as a TO and Superior Officer over many including Lucy. Eventually, they were able to bury any residual feelings for each other. It just wasn't worth the consequences. Neither confessed how they felt to one another so there was no awkwardness. They were able to build and maintain a close friendship.

As in staying in denial mode. Tim met Ashley who was the daughter of a retired police officer, Jerry McGrady. Tim had a lot of respect for Jerry. Ashley was a lifeguard. Tall, thin and blond. A strong resemblance to his ex wife, Isobel. They didn't have a lot in common. Ashley was easy going and fun. Tim was content to give their relationship a good shot and it just seemed to work.

Lucy had met Chris Sanford. An ADA lawyer. He was good looking, sweet and really cared about Lucy. They had a lot of fun together. Like Tim's relationship, they didn't have a lot in common but they gelled. He appreciated Lucy's true crime love and she genuinely enjoyed his company.

Both Tim and Lucy were settling. It became safe. Something they both convinced themselves was going to make them happy. The denial was a force. Neither of them was going to allow themselves to really feel their true feelings. Amazingly enough they were able to play the part well. Their significant others never saw through their denial. Even after the double date where it was apparent who really had a connection. Ashley and Chris were still oblivious.

Life was going well for both Tim and Lucy. They had built an amazing friendship. They had a shorthand with one another. There was no complications. Just a true blue friendship. They both cherished that, They always had each others backs. It was safe and comfortable.

Denial is a funny thing.

It eventually needs to be met on head on.

Chapter 4 ~ Tims MVP Angela

Tim's best friend sets him straight on his feelings. Brings Tim out of his denial.

Angela Lopez has been Tim Bradford's best friend for many years now. She had been there when his marriage to Isobel imploded. She saw how it broke Tim to the core. She saw him go through the darkness. Angela stood right by his side as he navigated himself through his heartbreak. She saw Tim at his best and at his worst.

Angela had always seen a big connection between Tim and Lucy. She didn't push things as she knew what a rule follower her close friend was. He would never cross any line while he is Lucy's superior. Angela secretly always hoped that would change. She always thought 'If Tim could see his face when he's around her or even when her name is brought up. His face literally LIGHTS UP like a Christmas tree'

When Tim started dating Ashley. Angela was a little disappointed. She didn't see Ashley being the love of his life. They had zero in common. Angela was truthfully surprised it had lasted this long. Sure, Ashley was tall, thin, a blond and blue eyed pretty girl. But in the long run that was not going to ensure Tim's happiness. Angela never made a real effort but she was cordial to Ashley. She would always stand by her best friends side even if she wasn't in agreement.

Even while Tim and Lucy were both in relationships. Angela couldn't believe the connection they still had with each other. She would take little jabs at her best friend, trying to get him to admit ANYTHING but could never get him to break. Although, she did notice his facial expressions and it was obvious.

On one occasion...

"Timothy, do you have feelings for Lucy?"

"NOOO. Lucy is with Chris. I'm dating Ashley. And I'm her superior officer...SOOO"

'All true. Not what I asked"

Still, not admittance. Just denial.

On another occasion...

"So tell me again. What were you doing at Lucy's apartment when you found Chris bleeding out?"

"Just dropping her off after we got back from Vegas"

"Mhmmm"

Still, so much denial.

Tim an Ashley had broken up after his spinal surgery.

Finally, Angela had enough. She was going to get Tim to admit his feelings once and for all. Angela clicked on her and Tim's texting thread.

Angela: "Timothy, I need to talk to you. I know It's your day off tomorrow. Can you meet me at the food trucks?"

Tim: "Umm alright. What time? Is everything OK?"

Angela: "Everything is OK. Around 11:30?"

Tim: "OK. See you then"

Angela got to the food trucks at 11:15. Ordered some food. burritos of course. Found a seat. Shortly later, Tim walked up.

"Timothy, Hello there"

"OK Ang, This is ominous. What is this about?"

"Tim. I'm gonna get right to the point. I'm ripping the band aid off. What the hell are you waiting for?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Lucy...Tim, I mean Lucy. You know damn well your in love with her and If I'm being honest, you have been for a while now"

Tim sighed. Swiping the back of his hand across the forehead. Tim knew he couldn't deny it any longer. His feelings had become even stronger since their return from Vegas. It was just a matter of time before Angela saw through the denial.

"Yeah. Your not wrong. But she's still with Chris"

"Tim, listen to me. I and everyone else sees how Lucy looks at you when your in the room and when she's talking about you...which is often by the way. You have always voiced how you follow protocol and rules. Of course, she isn't going to tell you. She's probably petrified of being rejected and having her heart broken. She's still with Chris because he is safe BUT he is not the one she loves"

"Ang, your right. I'm a rule follower and I probably will always be that way. But when it comes to Lucy, I would gladly say 'screw the rules'. I love her so goddamn much. It literally hurts. I don't want to make any excuses anymore. I want to date her. I want to wake up to her everyday. I want it all with her"

"FINALLY"

"Go get your girl. Tell her all of this. I guarantee, Chris will be a thing of the past"

Chapter 5: Lucy’s MVP Aaron

Aaron of all people gets Lucy to see her true feelings.

Lucy was certain she needed to break things off with Chris. After feeling nothing but anxiety over him wanting them to purchase a house together. It was evident. She didn't love Chris, the way he loved her. After the conversation with Tim. He really struck a chord with her. Lucy had found herself stopping from letting her true feelings spill from her mouth.

"Lucy, you deserve someone who is worth the effort"

And then...

"Do you love him?"

"I feel like I should love him...It's just...he's NOT"

She barely was able to stop herself from uttering that three letter word...YOU.

Those feelings she had kept away so well, were being brought back up to the surface. There was no denial. Ignoring how she truly felt became exhausting.

Aaron, well relatively new to Wilshire, had become friends with everyone, including Lucy. Aaron had quietly seen the dynamic between Lucy and Tim. Having a chance to ride with both in the shop. After Tim's breakup, he saw the tension. He had always thought Ashley was not a good match for Tim and knew Lucy was never all in with Chris.

'When are these idiots going to just admit it'. This ran through his mind frequently.

As Lucy and Aaron were riding in the shop. Lucy came right out and told him she needed to break up with Chris.

"FINALLY"

Aaron, wanting to speed things along, even helped Lucy rehearse the breakup and what she might say. Lucy was so sweet and heartfelt, Even talking herself out of it on order not to hurt Chris.

Later, as they had a coffee break in the shop.

"Lucy, I know we haven't been friends a long while. But i feel I owe you some brotherly love. Chris is a nice guy, really he is. And if things were different he might even be good for you. But not when there is someone else who you CLEARLY love and who loves you too, by the way. Stop settling"

Finally, after years the gate opened.

"Aaron, I love Tim so much. I'm so in love with him. I feel so guilty I strung Chris along. I was just so scared at the consequences for us being together. I can't keep going on like this. I can't care about the risks anymore. Tim is my forever. All I want to do is hold onto him and never let him go. A fantasy I constantly have is laying in bed with Tim, snuggling and having Kojo at the end of OUR bed. The three of us. A family"

"Lucy, deal with Chris once and for all. Then, you go to Tim and tell him exactly how you feel. Trust me, he feels the same. It's as clear as day on how he feels"

Chapter 6 ~ Confessions

FINALLY. Tim and Lucy admit their feelings to each other.

Lucy had broken up with Chris. She felt bad especially seeing how hurt he was but also knew she had to be selfish, think about herself and think about the life she really wanted. She felt a twinge of guilt but it escaped quickly knowing how in love with Tim she was. All she really felt was regret for not being honest with her feelings until now. It was almost a sense of relief.

Lucy had asked Tim to have a talk with her after work. She suggested they take Kojo for a walk. Less pressure, nothing extravagant. Just somewhere normal to them where they can be honest and open with each other.

Lucy met Tim and Kojo at their favorite trail parking lot. As they made their way down the trail...At first, an awkward silence but leave it to Lucy to break any barrier.

"So, I broke up with Chris"

"Oh...How did he take it?"

"He was upset and shocked. But it was inevitable. The writing was on the wall"

"Are you OK Lucy?"

"That depends on how this goes"

"Huh. Lucy, What do you mean by that?"

"Tim, I'm in love with you. I'm sorry to be so blunt and forthcoming. But I can't handle keeping my feelings in any longer. I have loved you for so long. I know with our professional situation saying this could be a recipe for my heart to be broken into a million pieces. I just needed to tell you. If there was even a chance at getting my happy ending. It is worth the risk. I know this is heavy. I - I'm sorry Tim"

"Lucy...Stop just stop. Let me talk. Your heart is not in jeopardy of breaking because I'm so in love with you too. Actually, I'm sure you're the love of my life. You're it for me. I know I'm Mr. rule follower but somethings matter more. We will fill out paperwork, have interviews and whatever else. As long as at the end of the day...I go to sleep and wake up with you in my arms and I get to stare into those beautiful brown eyes of yours"

Lucy had tears swelling in her eyes. Her heart was bursting at the seams.

"Tim, where do we go from here?"

"I think we start by going out on a date"

"That sounds...PERFECT"

They continued on their walk with Kojo. Hand in hand.

Chapter 7 ~ First Date

Tim and Lucy go on their first date.

This didn't feel like a first date. They had already confessed their love for one another. It felt they were way past a first date. But even still, Tim wanted to take her on a date to remember. At first, Tim thought about a 'perfect date'. Soon, he realized it didn't need to be extravagant. He just wanted to do something romantic to show Lucy just how much he loved her.

He booked a reservation at a nice beach side restaurant and then he planned to take Lucy on a night stroll along the beach.

When Tim arrived to pick Lucy up at her apartment. Dressed in a nice button up shirt and black dress pants. Tim looked handsome. Lucy walked out in the famous green dress she wore to Angela and Wes's wedding that ended up never happening. Nevertheless, that dress drove Tim insane. As he stared into her eyes, he was literally speechless.

"Lucy, you look SO BEAUTIFUL"

"You look pretty damn handsome, yourself"

As they sat down at their table. Conversation flowed. There was no awkwardness. Almost felt like a married couple going on a date night. As they finished their meals, Tim was paying the bill.

"Tim, this is the perfect date. It was so us and just felt right. Thank you so much for a wonderful night"

"It's not over yet. We are going to go for a walk along the beach"

"Tim, You don't like the beach"

"Maybe, but you love the beach. Truthfully, I will go anywhere with you. Especially, If I can witness you lighting up and seeing that beautiful smile"

"Tim, You have turned into a complete softie"

"Only with you, Baby. I have a reputation to uphold"

As they walked hand in hand along the beach. A slight breeze, waves quietly crashing. It felt magical.

"So Tim, We have a couple days off. is there going to be a second date?"

"Well, I had a thought. I think we should go to your place, so you can pack a bag. You come home with me. Spend the whole weekend with Kojo and I. We can watch movies and cuddle all weekend. All I wanna do is keep my arms wrapped around you for 48 hours. Give or take a few hours to eat and take Kojo on his walks"

"That sounds PERFECT"

"I feel like the luckiest girl in the world"

"Oh BABY. I'm the lucky one"

Chapter 8 ~ Cats Out Of The Bag

Everyone finds out. Not such a surprise as Tim and Lucy thought it would be.

After their date, Tim and Lucy had a blissful weekend together. Heat, passion. Also, a lot of cuddling. They felt so free. Finally, able to express how they felt for one another. For years now. They knew they couldn't live in this love bubble forever.

As they laid in bed. Lucy wrapped around Tim's warm and safe body. It seemed magical and straight out of a dream.

"Tim, I'm so happy, I can't remember a time feeling this much happiness"

"Me too, Baby. I think the first thing on Monday is to talk to Grey. We can take our time with everyone else. We should start the paperwork. Because I want to be with you fully in everyway"

The next day, both Tim and Lucy knocked on Grey's door.

Tim started

"Sir, can we talk to you for a minute?"

"Bradford. Chen. This is ominous. Is everything OK?"

"Everything is more than OK. So, we won't go into all the details on how this started but Chen and I need to fill out paperwork. We are...Ummm...Seeing each other. We are dating"

"I see. OK, Here's the paperwork. All ready to go, with your names on it"

Lucy stepped forward.

"You already had the paperwork ready?"

Both Tim and Lucy had a confused expression on their face.

"You two didn't do as good as a job at hiding residual feelings for each other as you might think. I have seen this coming for a while now. I give you both credit. You lasted longer than I thought you would...You know living in denial"

As they left Grey's office. Walking together. Both were blindsided at their meeting.

"So, Officer Bradford. Apparently we didn't do a good job at hiding out feelings"

"Nope. We sure didn't"

Tim had a smile on his face that was reminiscent of a high school boy in love.

"Bradford, I think we should let everyone else in on our happy news"

After roll call, Tim asked everyone to join them in the break room, As he had some news to share. Smiles smeared across all their friends faces. As they all gathered.

Angela blew the whistle on their news.

"So are you two finally letting yourselves onto the big secret that we all have seen coming for years now? Did you finally get your head out of your asses and FINALLY admit how you feel about each other?"

In shock again, Tim and Lucy stood there completely still.

Tim began talking

"Well apparently, We can't surprise anyone today. Yes, Lopez. Chen and I are together. We are dating".

"FINALLY"

Clapping and cheering erupted from the break room. As Lucy left with her patrol partner, Aaron and everyone exited the break room. Angela stayed back.

"Well Bradford. I'm so glad you finally took the plunge. You deserve to be happy"

"Ang, I have never been happier. Not even with Isobel. I have never felt like this before. I love her so much. It's unreal. "

"Good. This transition, especially professional, might raise some challenges but always fight for your happiness. Fight for Lucy. She's worth it"

"I will. Yes. She's WORTH IT ALL"

Chapter 9 ~ The Three Of Us

Next big step. Moving in together.

Tim and Lucy have been together for 6 months.

Tamara was living on campus at college. She had a steady boyfriend and was very busy in law school but made a point to have dinner with Lucy once a week. Often, Tim joined them. Tamara always saw both Lucy and Tim as her unofficial parents. Officer Zaddy always stuck with Tamara.

Lucy spent most nights with Tim at his place. Just going home every so often when they would spend a rare night apart.

Lucy had passed her Detectives exam and was working alongside Angela and Nyla. Professionally, it became much easier as Lucy didn't report to Tim. They were now in separate departments. There were no HR issues. With this, they were able to really commit to their relationship with no outside roadblocks.

Tim seemed distracted on this particular morning. Lucy and Nyla were out on a case. Angela was doing some paperwork around the station. She saw Tim stewing at his desk.

"Timothy, What's going on?"

"Lopez. I'm fine"

"Mhmm, You should tell your face your 'fine'"

"Fine. I'm just contemplating something. I want to ask Lucy to move in with me. She spends most nights with me. I'm just nervous. I don't want her to feel like I'm moving too fast. It's just...I hate waking up without her beside me. My home was always my home but now it feels like OUR HOME. It feels empty and dark when she's not there"

"Timothy, Don't worry about rushing things. You two should have been together for years now. This is the next step and I'm sure you will be pleased with Lucy's response"

Lucy arrived at Tim's later as she was finishing up a case. As she walked in, something smelt delicious. On the table there were lit candles. Soulful music playing. Lucy thought 'Did I miss an anniversary?' which made no sense, given Lucy never, ever missed an important date.

"Tim, What's going on?"

"Welcome HOME, Baby. I wanted to make you a nice dinner and show my girl some romance"

"Ohhh. Thank You. I needed this. I am the luckiest girl to have such a romantic boyfriend. Careful though, Your reputation could be in jeopardy"

As they sat down to eat. Tim nervously started talking.

"Luc. I wanted to talk to you. I don't want to rush things or put any pressure on you. It's just...since we got together. You have spent most nights here BUT the nights you're not here...Well, I hate those nights. It doesn't feel like my home anymore. It feels like our home. It feels dark and empty when you are gone. I want my nights to consist of you, me and Kojo. Every night. Waking up to you is the greatest part of my day. There is an extra room for Tamara, whenever she wants. I love you so much. The three of us made this house home to me. I think Kojo would agree with me. Will you move in with me?"

Lucy had tears pooling in her eyes.

"Oh, Babe. I feel the same. The nights I'm away from you are the worst. I miss you when I'm in my lonely apartment. I would love to move in with you. Move into our home. Just you, I and Kojo. And Tamara too. Sounds perfect to me"

"We can move you in on our weekend off. Lucy, you make me the happiest I have ever been. I LOVE YOU, BABY"

"I LOVE YOU MORE"

"Sorry Luc, Not possible"

Chapter 10 ~ Down On Bended Knee

Tim pops the question.

It has been a year and a half. Tim and Lucy were full steam ahead. Their relationship had been blissful. It was pretty clear, no two people were meant for each other more than them. Lucy had become a full time detective which she absolutely loved. Lucy, loved working with Angela and Nyla. She was a great detective. Tim is now a Sargent. He oversees all the police officers. Tim always wanted the best for his girlfriend. If she truly wanted to stay on patrol, he would of found a way to make that work. Lucy didn't want to stay on patrol. She always wanted to be a detective. It was her calling, which pleased Tim. Lucy was doing something she truly loved. Also, being in a different department there was no issues with nepotism. Lucy moved in with Tim, 6 months ago. That next step transition was seemingly easy. Sure, they had arguments as every couple does but it was fixed as quick as it began.

Tim had the ring for a couple weeks now. He has been waiting for a perfect time. There was absolutely no doubt in his mind. Lucy is the love of his life and he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Lucy has a complicated relationship with her family but Tim made sure to to talk to her dad and get his blessing. Lucy's family weren't very supportive of her being a police officer but started to accept her choices especially after she became a detective. They also saw how much Tim loved her and blessed their relationship after some time. Her father, after a long talk, gave Tim his blessing. Tim also had a talk with Tamara, he wanted her blessing as well given how much Tamara meant to Lucy and also Tim. Lucy's puppy had wormed into his life as well.

Tim made a lunch date with his best friend, Angela. He needed his best friends advice. Talking to her at the station was a risk as Lucy could walk in on their conversation at anytime. Burritos was their friendship love language. Tim walked up to the food trucks and saw his best friend sitting at a table.

"Hello there, Timothy. So your wanting to talk about something?"

Angela knew her friend so well and had a strong suspicion he was more than ready to take the BIG step with Lucy.

"OK, Lopez. I obviously can't get much past you. I can see that smirk you have smeared across your face that you already know what I wanted to talk to you about"

"I don't know what your talking about"

"OK. Games over"

Tim pulled out the ring to show Angela.

"Bradford. I'm so proud of you. This ring is beautiful. I'm so damn happy for you. I saw Lucy as your person years ago. I know you loved Isobel. Lucy is different. She is without a doubt, your true love. She has completely changed you. She pulled you out of the darkness and into the light. She is your forever"

"Thanks, Ang. I never thought I could feel this way ever again. I know I loved Isobel but the feelings Lucy gives me everyday is nothing that I ever felt before. I can't imagine loving anyone the way I love her. I wake up in the mornings and stare at her and think I am the luckiest man in the whole world. I want more than anything to spend the rest of my life with her"

"Bradford. Your such a romantic"

"Yeah. You can thank Lucy for that"

"So, What's the plan?"

"I'm going to propose on her birthday. We are having that dinner party. I want everyone we know and love there. Hopefully, She doesn't say no"

"Bradford. That's not even possible."

A WEEK LATER

It was Lucy's birthday party. Lucy came out of their bedroom in a new red dress matched with light makeup and red lipstick. She literally took Tim's breath away.

"Baby. What are you doing to me? You look absolutely gorgeous"

"Thank You, Babe. You look so handsome yourself"

"Happy Birthday, My Love"

Lucy lips crashed hard into Tim's.

"Chen. Don't start something you cannot finish"

"So later, Then?"

"Yes. Definitely later"

Their guests started to arrive. Drinks were flowing. Tim had dinner catered from Lucy's favorite restaurant and it was delicious.

As everyone gathered in the living room. Tim clinked his glass.

"Thank You, Everyone for coming to celebrate Lucy, Who as you know is the best rookie I ever trained"

Laughter echoed through the room.

"Lucy, Tonight we celebrate you. You have literally turned my world upside down. You took me out of a dark cloud I was hiding under and brought me back into the light. You showed me how to love again and be deserving to be loved back. You are the love of my life. When I look into your beautiful brown eyes. I feel something I have never felt before"

As tears pooled in Lucy's eyes. She sees her boyfriend drop down to one knee with a beautiful diamond ring, shining brightly.

"Tim, Wh-What are you doing?"

"Lucy, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to spend eternity showing you the love you deserve. WILL YOU MARRY ME?"

"YES! YES! Of course I will marry you"

As Tim stood up, he placed the ring on his now fiances left ring finger and gave her a soft, passionate kiss.

There wasn't a dry eye in the house. For the next while, the engaged couple received hugs. Lucy was still emotional. She had never felt so much joy as everyone was gushing over her new piece of jewelry.

As the night winded down, their guests left and it was just the three of them again. As they relaxed on the couch with Kojo at Lucy's feet.

"Tim, You have made me the happiest girl in the world. Now, laying here the three of us. We are a real family. Someday, bring a baby into our family. Tim, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I cannot wait to become Mrs. Bradford"

"Lucy, You have completely shaped my world. Before I wasn't really living, just existing. You came into my life as a spunky rookie and changed me, rocked my world. You made me a better man. Thank You for saying YES. I can't wait to marry you, My beautiful girl"

Chapter 11 ~ Not A Option

Countdown to the big day. Only a week away. Lucy finds herself in a harrowing situation. Tim is determined to get to her.

The wedding was a week away. Everything was planned and ready. Tim was beaming, he could hardly contain himself. He just wanted so badly for Lucy to become a Bradford. Lucy was so busy. Between cases and working on wedding details. She was constantly on the go but she knew it was so worth it. Pretty soon, she was marrying the love of her life. She was getting her happily ever after and just couldn’t wait to be Tim’s wife. After everything they have been through. They had beat all the odds.

A case had come across Angela’s desk regarding suspicious circumstances in a run down warehouse. They had multiple cases so she asked Lucy to go and do a initial investigation. There has been an explosion and a body had been found outside of the warehouse. Other than that, emergency responders could not piece together what had taken place. Lucy was leaving the station. She always stops by Tim’s office as she leaves or vice versa if either of them is there. It had become a tradition. They kept things professional at work but found ways to have little, subtle moments together. As she made her way into his office. She was smiling from ear to ear.

“Sargent Bradford”

“Detective Chen. Or are you going by Detective Bradford yet?”

“Not yet. You have to say I DO first”

“Ohhh. That’s not going to be a problem”

“OK. Babe. I’m off to investigate at this warehouse. I will either see you here or at home later”

“Sounds good. I love you Detective Chen and…STAY SAFE”

“Always do. I love you more”

As Lucy pulled up to the warehouse. She walked in, had put gloves on just in case she came across any evidence. Walking and searching through chards of glass and debris. This was going to be daunting, trying to find any clues. As she was searching. A square, small shaped box caught her attention. It had wires attached to the back. Lucy thought it could be the reason for the explosion. As she picked it up, instantly regretting picking it up.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

This wasn’t the cause of the explosion. This was a device that hadn’t detonated. Now, she was holding it. Knowing if she dropped it, the device would explode. She got on her radio while holding the bomb.

“Lopez. Harper. I’m in a situation here. I need a bomb squad rolled to my location. I’m currently holding a device that hasn’t detonated. Please hurry”

As Lucy was pleading for help. Tim happened to be having lunch with Angela. He literally felt like throwing up.

“WHAT THE HELL! She’s holding a damn bomb. This can’t be happening”

Harper had called in for the bomb squad to get to Lucy’s location.

“OK. Tim. She’s gonna be OK”

“She’s holding a goddamn bomb. You can’t promise that. I CAN’T LOSE HER”

“Let’s go, Ang. I need to be with her”

As Angela and Tim arrived at the warehouse. Tim leaped out of the car. Nyla stopped him.

“So, the bomb squad is working at disabling the bomb. My gosh. Your soon to be wife is one smart cookie. It would have detonated if she dropped it. It’s a complicated bomb. It’s going to take a bit to disable it. Lucy is scared but she’s holding it together”

“I’m going in. I need to be with her”

No one was going to stop him. They understood. If it was either of them. They would want Wesley or James to be there with them.

Tim walked in. He first noticed two bomb squad officers diligently surrounding Lucy. As they broke away for a second. He saw her. His beautiful fiancé. His whole world. Love of his life. The woman who is going to be his wife in 7 damn days. Lucy, usually she had a beaming smile, looked bright and cheerful. This Lucy, looked defeated, broken and scared. This shattered Tim’s heart into a million pieces. Lucy was sweating and trying desperately not to shake.

“Hey. Baby” Tim softly said

“Ti-Ti-Tim…What are you doing here?”

“Are you kidding, Luc? There is NO WHERE ELSE I WOULD EVER BE”

“Tim, I’m scared”

“I know you are, my love. But listen to me. We are leaving this warehouse together”

Tim gently cupped his hands around Lucy’s.

“Tim, What are you doing?”

“Baby. If your holding a bomb, then I’m holding a bomb too”

“Babe. I don’t want both of us in danger”

“We are a team. You and I. We are doing this together”

“I have never been so terrified. I don’t want to die”

“Baby, Listen to me. Your not going to die. OK. Losing you. Losing us IS NOT A OPTION”

“I just want to be your WIFE. Get my happily ever after”

“Luc, You are going to get that. I promise. We are going to be so happy. You and I. An old married couple with Kojo and a couple of babies” winking at his soon to be wife.

The bomb officer, Mike had now figured out the mechanics of the wires.

“Tim, I need you to lift your hand and Lucy at the count if three, your going to let go”

“Ar-Are you sure?”

“I promise it’s OK. Just let go”

Lucy closed her eyes as she dropped the bomb. Almost preparing for the worst. As she let go. Nothing. She was safe. Opened her eyes. Sobbing, tears streaming down her cheeks. As she looked up. She saw Tim sobbing too. Tim grabbed her jacket, hard. He brought her in tightly, wrapped his arms around every inch of her body. Lucy was holding onto him just as tightly.

Tim cupped her face. Circling his thumbs over her cheeks.

“Baby. Are you OK?”

“I think so. I’m just glad to be breathing and in your arms. Just like I was 5 years ago, when you saved my life. Why was I such a idiot? Not telling you how I felt then”

Tim laughing

“Oh, Luc. You’re not the only one who regrets not expressing their feelings. But I believe we were always going to get to where we are now”

“Can we go home? I wanna go home. Give Kojo kisses and snuggle with my almost husband. That’s what’s going to make me feel better”

“You bet, Baby. Let’s go home”

Chapter 12 ~ I Do

Chenford WEDDING DAY!!!

The big day had finally arrived. Tim and Lucy had decided on a small, intimate wedding. Angela, Tim's best friend was going to be Tim's 'best woman'. Tamara was going to be Lucy's maid of honor. They had asked Grey who was ordained to officiate their wedding. Grey meant so much to both of them and had been one of their biggest cheerleaders. He also made sure, them being a couple did not hurt their careers in any way. After so many years, being scared of HR issues. Grey was not going to let some protocol ruin their relationship when they had finally realized their love for each other was worth the risk. Grey was honored to marry them.

They had picked a small venue on the beach. It was perfect for them. Even though Tim never really liked the beach. He had started to warm up to the sand and water...Why? Because of Lucy, of course.

Friday at roll call. Tim and Grey were addressing the group. Grey was speaking.

"Stay safe. Let's het through today. So, tomorrow we can celebrate two of our favorite people who are FIANLLY saying, I DO"

After shift, Tim and Lucy saw each other for the last time before he would see her walk down the aisle. Lucy wanted to keep certain traditions. Tim was going to spend the night at Angela's and Tamara was staying with Lucy. As Tim was getting his things together. Lucy was chilling with Kojo on the couch.

"OK. Chen. Soon to be Bradford. I'm ready to go"

As he walked over to her. Cupping her face in his hands.

"I will see you tomorrow, my beautiful girl. I cannot wait to see you looking all gorgeous in your dress, walk towards me and FINALLY become my wife. I LOVE YOU, BABY"

"I am so excited to see how sexy you are gonna look in your tux. You're becoming my husband. My dream come true. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH"

Giving Lucy a big kiss. Reaching down to give Kojo some love.

Tamara came over. The girls decided to just have a relaxing girls night. Watched some rom-coms. They were going to bed early. It was going to be a big day tomorrow.

Lucy was almost asleep when her FaceTime ringtone started ringing. She knew it could only be one person. As she answered.

"Tim. Babe. Are you OK? It's 10:30. Don't you know this bride needs her beauty sleep?"

"First of all. This bride is already the most beautiful girl in the world, sleep or no sleep. Second, I want the last thing I see before I fall asleep is your gorgeous face. You, have always been the last vision I see before I close my eyes.

Morning had arrived. Lucy turned over to see the sun shining brightly through the window pane.

As Tim and Angela stood to the side of Grey. The ceremony was about to start.

The music began. Grey asked everyone to stand to welcome the bride.

Sniffles could be heard through the ceremony.

Laughter erupted.

Chapter 13 ~ Babymoon

Tim And Lucy have a honeymoon getaway to the mountains. Lucy has news to share with her husband.

Lucy went from Lucy Chen to Lucy Bradford. Their wedding was perfect. Newlywed life was blissful. Being married suited both Tim and Lucy. After the wedding they went straight back into work mode. Tim being a Sergeant and Lucy a detective. You could say they are Wiltshire’s power couple. They had gone back and forth about to where to go for their honeymoon. Neither was wanting to travel far. They live in LA so going to a warm destination location wasn’t that important to them. Both Tim and Lucy loved to go on hikes in the mountains with Kojo. So, they decided renting a air b n b in the mountains would be perfect. They could also take Kojo with them. They had reserved a cabin for five days. It was going to be magical.

It was Tim and Lucy’s last day before they were going to be on vacation for their getaway to the mountains. Neither saw much of each other that day. Tim was very busy dealing with the mountain of paperwork he needed to finish and Lucy was out in the field finishing up a case. Angela spotted her best friend at his desk with his face buried in papers.

“Timothy. Are you ready for your getaway with your wife? Wife…I still can’t believe that”

Since the wedding. Everytime Angela sees Tim, she finds herself staring down at Tim’s left hand and admiring the silver ring that now occupies that finger. After Isobel, she never thought he would have that again. Sure, he loved Isobel but she was convinced Tim had never known a love like Lucy.

“I sure am Lopez. I am so ready to spend 6 days away. Secluded in the mountains with my WIFE, oh and Kojo”

“Marriage looks pretty good on you, Bradford”

“It feels pretty damn amazing. Lucy is by far the BEST thing that has ever happened to me. I am so lucky I get to call her my wife”

Lucy had come back to the station. The case was closed. She was debriefing with Nyla.

“Detective Bradford. You are done here. Now, get out of here and go enjoy some quality time with your new husband”

“Yes ma’am”

Lucy passed by her husband’s office before she left the station. They were still always very professional at work but still had soft moments with each other.

“Hi there, handsome”

“Well, hello there my beautiful wife”

“I just wanted to check in with you before I left. I have some errands to run and then home to finish packing. I know you’re just gonna throw some things in a bag but your wife doesn’t roll that way. So, I will see you at home later?”

“You bet, beautiful. Let’s be real Luc. I’m sure you will have my bag packed by the time I get home”

“You know me so well. Love you”

“Love you too. I will see you soon”

The Bradford’s which included Kojo left in Tim’s truck for their destination first thing in the morning. They had planned to get groceries as they got near the cabin. At the grocery store they had picked up supplies to make some nice meals and Tim also grabbed some beer and some wine for his wife. When he had asked Lucy what kind she wanted. He noticed she was a little reserved. She had ‘forgotten’ something and walked in the opposite direction. Tim ended up grabbing a bottle he thought she would enjoy.

They got to the cabin. It was a beautiful log cabin. Mountains in the near distance. A flowing river directly behind the house. It was quiet and purely magical.

As Tim was putting groceries away. Lucy and Kojo were relaxing on the couch. Tim had opened a beer for himself.

“Baby. Do you want a glass of wine?”

“I’m OK right now”

Lucy scooted up and grabbed her purse, she made her way into the kitchen. She had a very serious look come across her face. Tim, knowing his wife so well, could see something was heavily weighing on her mind.

“Luc. What’s going on? You have been acting off the whole way up here and then walking away from me in the grocery store. You have been so excited for our honeymoon up until today it seems. Are you OK? Are we OK?”

Lucy had tears forming in her eyes.

“Baby. What’s wrong? Please talk to me”

“Tim, I know we talked about what we wanted for our future before we got married. Sometimes plans change though”

“Luc. Your scaring me, what are you talking about?”

Lucy took a deep breath. Reached her hand into the side of her purse and placed a white stick on the counter. Tim looked down and saw a positive symbol on the small screen.

“Baby. Yo-Your pregnant?”

“I am. I have been feeling nauseous and a little off for a few days so I thought I would just pick up a test and make sure. I know this wasn’t in the plan. We just got married. We wanted time to be a married couple for a while. We wanted…”

“Luc. Stop. This is amazing. I would love nothing more than for us to bring a mini you or a mini me into this world. I love you so much. Maybe it wasn’t our plan right away but that doesn’t matter. I can’t think of anything I have wanted more than making you my wife and us starting a family”

“Oh, Tim. I was nervous about how you might react but as usual you knew exactly what to say to make me feel better. I’m so happy too. I am so ready for this. Starting a family with you is everything I have ever wanted”

They had a romantic dinner together and then moved to the couch. As Lucy laid her head over Tim’s chest. Tim had one hand around her shoulder, running his fingers through her brown, wavy curls and his other hand was rubbing her belly.

“Luc, we are having a baby”

‘Yes we are, Tim. Best honeymoon ever, or should I say babymoon”

Chapter 14 ~ Hormones

A hard case hits a pregnant Lucy hard. Tim is her rock as usual.

It had been a whirlwind few months for The Bradford’s. As they arrived home from their honeymoon getaway from the mountain cabin. It was all about finding an OB GYN, after Lucy’s pregnancy had been confirmed with bloodwork. At their first ultrasound, Tim’s emotions came flooding out as they heard their baby’s heartbeat for the first time. Tim had dreamed for so long of becoming a father. After Isobel, he had convinced himself it was just not in the cards for him. That was until Lucy changed everything for him. Now, she had not only pulled him out of the darkness but had made him the happiest man in the world. Going from his boot, to his friend, to his girlfriend and now his wife. Lucy was now gifting him a baby, their baby. Tim was on cloud nine and eternally grateful for his life now.

Lucy was also elated with their life. She had never felt complete in any of her relationships, never able to fully commit to anyone. As much as Lucy tried, she was never able to truly fall in love with anyone. Until, Tim. She had those butterfly feelings from the beginning. They never went away. Even when the idea of them being together felt impossible. It took a really hard time. A long time pining for one another, dating other people but in the end their feelings for each other would eventually not be denied anymore. Lucy had thought she could not ever feel happier than when she became Mrs. Bradford. It was matched at the sound of their baby’s heartbeat.

Now Lucy, 16 weeks pregnant. They had gone back and forth on whether they wanted to find out the gender or have it a surprise. After many talks, even small arguments. They finally decided to find out. At their ultrasound, the tech gave them the news. Tim and Lucy were having a baby GIRL. They were both so excited. Lucy immediately starting buying baby girl outfits. Tim tried to reign it in but in the end of the day seeing Lucy happy and smiling gave him literal goosebumps. Happy wife, happy life. As far as he was concerned, she could buy whatever she wanted for their baby.

Lucy was now 24 weeks pregnant and her hormones were in full force. She found herself getting emotional over virtual everything. It was a very busy day for Tim at the station. There was many calls he had to attend to as a Sergeant. He finally returned back to the station and went to check in with his wife. As he approached Angela and Nyla, who were sitting at their desks, there was no Lucy. As he saw Angela had a concerned look when he walked up.

“Hi Ang. Where’s my wife”

“Tim, we had a hard ending to a case. We found and apprehended the suspect but we were too late and found his little girls body. Lucy didn’t want to leave the little girl. I sent her home to regroup. I wanted her to rest. I’m sorry, Tim”

“That’s OK, Ang. I am going to head home and see my girls”

“Good idea”

Tim arrived at their house. He walked in and found his wife curled up on the couch with her knees resting against her chin. Sobbing. She had Kojo right beside her who as always was trying to comfort her.

“Hi Baby. I’m so sorry for what happened today”

“Tim, she just a innocent little girl. Like our little girl will be in a couple of years. I have seen these cases before in the job we have and it’s always hard. I’m so emotional. I couldn’t even gather myself to stay at work. I am such a mess”

“Luc. First. Our baby girl is always going to be unconditionally loved and protected for her entire life. Second, of course you are emotional. This case would affect anyone. Throw in, you being pregnant. Just give yourself a break. OK”

Tim crawled onto the couch beside his wife and held her. Having one hand on her growing belly.

“Luc. Listen to me. You can let out all the emotions you need to. I will always hold and comfort you. Smother you with kisses. You just concentrate on keeping a good home for our little princess”

Chapter 15 ~ Baby Bradford

Tim and Lucy welcome their baby GIRL.

Lucy was 37 weeks pregnant. It was her last day at Wilshire before she would go on mat leave. Lucy was very tired. She was feeling gigantic. Angela and Nyla arranged a little surprise celebration for Lucy and Tim. Lucy was overwhelmed with emotion. Lucy and Tim were always professional inside the walls of the station, even as a married couple. However, on this day. Tim didn’t even think about breaking any rules. Wrapping his arms around his wife giving her soft, little kisses. Tim was going to be having some paternity leave in a week, so he could be home with Lucy and his baby girl.

Tim actually hated leaving their home in the following days to go to work. He wanted to stay with his wife. Lucy reassured him to go to work and she would be ok at home. Tim was checking in either via text or phone calls every 30 minutes. No matter what he was doing, he was checking in like clockwork.

For weeks prior, they had gotten everything needed for their baby girl. They had settled on a simple nursery. A star and moon theme. Mint green and white. They loved this theme as they thought for their baby girl, as she grows up to reach for the stars. Crib, changing table, car seat/stroller combo and rocking chair. The mountains of clothes Lucy had purchased were hanging in the nursery’s closet. Baby girl Bradford was going to be a fashionista. Diapers, bottles, and many necessities were given during Lucy’s baby shower. Aunt Angela and Aunt Nyla purchased a bassinet for them to have, as their baby will spend the first little while with her mommy and daddy. They were ready for their baby’s arrival.

A few night later, Tim and Lucy were sound asleep in bed when Lucy was jolted awake.

“TIM! TIM! My water just broke. WAKE UP!”

“I’M AWAKE! I’M AWAKE! I will grab your hospital bag”

Tim stood still for a moment. Placed his hand over his wife’s round belly.

“Tim, what are you doing? Let’s go”

“Right. Let’s go and meet our little princess”

Tim had tears flowing down his cheeks. Smiling from side to side. He was finally getting the family he had always wanted. How did he get so lucky? After all the darkness and hardships. Tim was married to the absolute love of his life and was about to become a dad to their baby girl. He was about to have two girls, his whole world.

Later at the hospital. Lucy was rushed to labour and delivery. Doctor did an initial exam and had her hooked to a fetal monitor. Lucy was fully dilated and ready to deliver their baby girl. 3 hours of hard labour and she was here.

“It’s A GIRL. Ten fingers, ten toes and a full head of hair”

Then came the most wonderful sound Tim and Lucy had ever heard. Their baby girl started uncontrollably crying. A sound every parent wants to hear immediately after birth. Nurses took her over to the weigh scale, cleaned her up and do initial tests. Baby Bradford was a perfectly, healthy baby girl. As she was swaddled in a hospital blanket and brought over to mom and dad. She was given to Lucy where she held her baby girl for the first time. Tim, situated beside Lucy on her bed, felt like he had died and gone to heaven.

“Tim, she’s PERFECT. Our daughter is PERFECT”

“Luc, she’s GORGEOUS. I always knew she was going to her moms mini me. Luc, you were remarkable and amazing. I am so proud of you. We are a family. Just me and my girls. And of course Kojo. You and our princess are my WHOLE WORLD. Don’t you ever forget that”

“Daddy, why don’t you take our little angel to the waiting room so she can meet her aunts, uncles and Grandpa Grey. Announce her name, which is perfect and show her off. This kind of cuteness should be shared with everyone”

Everyone was impatiently waiting. Tim emerged down the hall cradling their new bundle of joy.

All of Sophia’s family had a chance to hold and admire her. As she was handed back to Tim.

“Ok. Baby girl. Let’s go see Mommy. I bet she’s missing you”

Moments later. Sophia was in her mommy’s arms and Tim laying beside them with one arm around his wife and the other gripping his baby girls hand with his one finger.

he's a first generation ghanaian-american. his parents moved from ghana to the states in the early 90s, and had kojo in 1993. he was their first and only son due to the difficult pregnancy and birth his mother had.

he's always been a social butterfly. there's never been a time in his life where he didn't have a group of friends to lean on or interact with.

when he was fourteen years old, he was orphaned because his parents passed away in a tragic accident. because he didn't have any family in the states, he was placed into foster care until he aged out when he turned eighteen.

losing his parents was a a traumatic experience for him and was the only time in his life where he truly felt alone. he had his friends, but he didn't have his parents. he found himself becoming jealous of his friends that still had their parents in their lives, something that he had to go to therapy in order to get over.

kojo worked hard in school, even more so after his parents passed, and was able to earn a scholarship to college, where he studied graphic design and media studies. he graduated with his degree and immediately landed a job with a start up company that went on to become successful.

That's about the limitations with Nightmare- thing is this idiot tends to never sleep so he's bound to turn bitty with his soul wanting to retract his form to save stamina- however thankful that the Battleground is just pouring with negativity! A tiny context behind Nightmare if needed--v

Nightmare lives within HearthStone with Cross and a horse (Cross got it bc of course he did) named Milky ( I didn't name the horse). Nightmare isn't after Dream anymore because he feels no need to as there is enough negativity for him. Peoples feelings and shit does not rely on the two any more, so one good thing from the Fall is the two aren't caged by their old duties. Still they have their whole emotional effects n shit yadda yadda but Nightmares goal is to find out how this all happened- Dream acting weird is what sparked the whole curiosity. So Nightmares first step is to try and convince Abyss to assist him as Abyss has connections to the Control force, an organization that aims to protect the people of Kojo and planning to spread to HearthStone. Yet Abyss doesn't budge as he thinks Nm is just paranoid and that there are more important things to worry about. Nightmares goal isn't to make the BattleGround better, hell no, but if there is a larger threat that made the Fall he wants to be aware of it and prepared if something catastrophic happens again. Despite Abyss refusing to assist Nightmare finds a lead between Dream and Blue, but the two keep their mouth zip :) That's the rough starting layout for Nightmare

A reaction essay for the film, Maboroshi.

“My feeling of love is so similar to hate,” Masamune said. I believe that love and hate are two sides of the same coin. Where love is intimately connected to hate, even when seemingly unrelated. 

Maboroshi is an animated film that was published in the year 2023. Written and directed by Mari Okada, who also wrote its original novel Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Kojo. Previously, Mari Okada, alongside A-1 Pictures, released the animated film Anohana: The Flowers We Saw That Day. Like Anohana, Maboroshi was a film that moved people to tears. Mari Okada is known for her emotionally charged works, and I can say for sure that Maboroshi is one of them.

Maboroshi started on a normal note. Four teenagers sat around a table who were doing their homework. As they joked around, one of them passed gas, which sent them all into a chaotic frenzy because of the stanch. When Masamune pushed the sliding window open, the lights went out, and an explosion was heard. The other boys scrambled to their feet and ran to check what happened through the window. The steel factory exploded, and it sent their world into a timeless freeze. 

Throughout the entire movie, I experienced an array of emotions. This film left me in a state of tears; it felt bittersweet despite the happy ending. I was only disappointed in the person I was when I began watching the movie.

The beginning of the anime felt normal yet odd. Four teenagers sat around a table, doing their homework and conversing with each other. While I expected something more complicated out of them, they were just your typical fourteen-year-old boys. One of them even made explicit jokes, which I responded poorly to. It was a little strange at first, watching them act their age and make explicit jokes about the opposite sex. I could only hope that it would fade as the movie went on since it made me feel uncomfortable.

After the explosion of the steel factory, it almost seemed like time was reversed, back to the start of the show. Seeing the characters again, it was almost like they knew what had happened caused something to shift in their world. Masamune, one of the main characters of this show, noticed this and even pointed it out in his inner monologue. At first, the timeline moving backward confused me. I asked myself if this movie was going to be on the premise of a time loop. However, when Masamune said that this place felt different, I immediately knew it wasn’t a time loop; rather, it seemed to be a different timeline. Or, as past me said, did they jump worlds? Of course, that was from when I lacked further information on the story.

Seeing as the feeling of the world around them has changed, the 4 boys, including Masamune, run out of Masamune’s house to go see the explosion again. The explosion happened, and these teal, luminescent cracks scattered over the sky, creating an otherworldly scene. My initial reaction to this was both shock and bafflement and that only increased when I saw figures form out of the smoke from the steel factory; the dust formed akin to that of wolves. Those dust wolves dove straight into cracks in the sky, and it looked like they were closing it. These strange occurrences raised questions. What caused this? Was this because of the explosion that caused the timeline jump or some otherworldly alteration of reality? 

From there, their lives continued as normal. Masamune and his friends attended school as usual, and they played games that seemed a little too dangerous for them. One scene showed that they were playing a game where they choke each other until the other faints, and that baffled me even more. In one of Masamune’s inner monologues, he mentioned that they were playing games that seemed to hurt or sting them. His tone sounded confused at first, but instead of confusion, I think it was resignation. 

At one point in the movie, Masamune claims that he hates Mutsumi Sagami, who is another main character in the story. Later on, that same Mutsumi takes him to the steel factory. There, Mutsumi leads Masamune to a chamber within the factory, where it houses a girl. A girl that looked to be held captive in that place. While she seemed to be about the age of fifteen, her behavior seemed to be that of a 5-year-old. 

Seeing that fifteen-year-old girl behave like a five-year-old left me speculating. It was infuriating to see. The poor girl showed no signs of physical abuse, thankfully. The little girl bounced around; I’m not sure if it was because there was a new person—Masamune, for this matter—or not, but she hopped around regardless. Seeing the fifteen-year-old girl act so much like a 5-year-old had me worried. 

Mutsumi mentioned that she was put in charge of taking care of her. She chose Masamune to help take care of the girl because he looked like a girl and she needed the help of a boy. There could be so many reasons why she did that, maybe because the girl might be averse to boys or maybe the fact that having a boy who actually looked like a boy could cause complications. But she explained that it was getting a little too difficult to take care of the girl by herself.

Mutsumi mentioned that Masamune didn’t react as strongly as she thought he would, and Masamune replied that he was too shocked to even react, all while cleaning out the urinal. Honestly, I would have replied with the same thing he said if I were in his shoes.

He then asked about who the girl was, but she never gave a clear answer nor did she give him a name. After a while, Mutsumi told him to come by on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Understandably, Masamune was confused and outright complained about it. To this, I burst out in laughter. How could someone you have just had a proper conversation with, I assume, a few hours ago, help take care of a girl who evidently should not even be where she was and should be back where her parents were? 

It was funny to find out that over the next few days, Masamune ended up doing what Mutsumi had asked of him and taking care of her on the specified days. Masamune soon finds out that the girl can talk. While talking one day, he offers to give her a name. So he gives her the name Itsumi. But the girl, Itsumi, keeps mistaking it for Mutsumi and repeatedly mentions Mutsumi, which I believe probably meant that she didn’t understand what Masamune told her. That was until she took off and exited the chamber and towards the back of the steel factory.

Masamune chases after her in an attempt to get her back to the chamber; he finally catches up with her at the end of a train, where she stands. Itsumi stood there, stepping on an elevated part of the train floor with one foot and the other flat on the ground. The sun illuminated her, and she played with the light by covering her eyes and moving them away repeatedly as if to play peek-a-boo with the sun. Her childlike innocence was highlighted, and Masamune was struck by inspiration and immediately took out his sketchbook and began sketching. That was until steel factory workers came by in search of Itsumi. 

It infuriated me to find out that she had been confined in the blast chamber on purpose because she was supposedly the “woman of the gods” and that she was not supposed to fall in love with a boy. They acted as if Itsumi was a sacrifice to the gods to appease their anger and free them from their time-frozen timeline. The fact their reasoning was religious only served to infuriate me further, because on what grounds was what they were doing justified?

Now, a friend of Masamune's has disappeared, named Sonobe. She confessed to him while they were doing a test of courage in a tunnel and ran out of the tunnel after being teased by her peers. She ran out, so embarrassed. They all ran after her and stopped once they were outside, seeing that the sky was littered with luminescent teal cracks. Sonobe mentioned how she wanted to escape—their world, I assume—yet they played instead; she had felt so embarrassed when everyone laughed at how she felt. Not even a moment passed when Sonobe too was littered with the teal cracks. Yet another scene that shocked me—people could have cracks on them too. Then, the dust wolves took form again from the factory and took Sonobe away, who was littered with cracks. It felt so upsetting to see Masamune blame himself for Sonobe’s disappearance. He thought that it was his fault, all because he liked another girl, Mutsumi.

He continued his life as usual, going to school and visiting Itsumi on his schedule to take care of her. During those times, he was so conflicted. Masamune mentions again how he and his friends played games that hurt them, and this was because they never felt pain. He then stated that he feels that the way he feels, love is akin to hate. That line absolutely tore me apart—to see him so conflicted, to see him long for something yet it hurt him at the same time. I believe that love is two sides of the same coin. Even if they seem to be unrelated, they are closely connected. 

Soon, people began finding out the truth from the man named Sagami. Sagami was the person who locked up Itsumi; he was the person who, in my opinion, had ridiculous religious ideals; he was the person who I thought to have acted so full of himself all because everyone believed him at a time when they needed an explanation as to why everything was happening. Their world, or town rather, is obsessed over the idea that no one should change as a person. It was then revealed by Sagami that this world was not reality but an anti-reality dimension created by the sacred machine, which is the steel factory. Sagami as a character infuriates me; he has caused so much pain to everyone around him. To me, he seemed like a lunatic. Even when his words did ring true sometimes, like how Itsumi’s emotions could shake up their entire reality.

People, the ones who wished to leave their world that was stuck in a perpetual loop of winter, disappeared left and right. The ones who wished for change disappeared, swept away by the dust wolves. With everyone leaving, those who were left lived their days doing what they wanted. Even then, no chaos ensued. It was soon found out that reality could be seen through the cracks that formed all over their world.

Masamune and Mutsumi have now taken Itsumi out of the blast chamber, taking her to his home so that she could be taken better care of by Masamune’s mom. Then, they find out that Itsumi is from a different reality, not from their timeline, and she could cause great havoc in their timeline whenever her emotions are shaken up. So, their lives continued as typically as they could with the worsening condition of their world. Cracks had begun to appear more often now, and their reality seemed to be at risk of collapse. 

To my growing detriment, I discovered that Itsumi was the child of Masamune and Mutsumi in reality, who were essentially their future selves. While the fact that Itsumi seemed to have developed a crush on who essentially was the younger version of her dad left a bad taste in my mouth, it may as well have been a child crush, a crush that a child claims to be when young. It could also be attributed to the fact that she could have felt safe due to the familial smell he would have given off, and this can be backed up by that one scene where Itsumi was cuddling up to Masamune’s jacket and shown to be sniffing it a little.

In a later scene, Masamune confessed to Mutsumi, explaining what I understood to be that no matter how dire their circumstances were, he discovered what it was like to live through Itsumi and her and what it had meant to be alive. This was all witnessed by Itsumi, and unfortunately, she seemed to have taken a liking to Masamune, and she began crying, saying that it hurt and that she felt left out. Cracks then scattered all over the place, growing as bad as they could get, referencing back to the fact that Itsumi could cause chaos to their world if her emotions were shaken up.

The situation seemed to take a turn for the better, to my relief; now Masamune wanted to send Itsumi back to reality. She didn’t belong in their timeline; if she had stayed any longer, she would disappear along with them, and that notion took me from zero to one hundred, in terms of tears. Their timeline began to crumble at the seams with every passing day, and they created a plan to send her back to reality after finding out that the train behind the steel factory was a train to reality, the train to a different timeline, where time moved forward. They were met with certain difficulties, but thankfully, they managed to get Itsumi back to reality, even if Mutsumi almost risked her existence doing so and how Itsumi refused at first, telling Mutsumi that she hated her by the end.

Maboroshi left me in tears, despite the happy ending. It felt more bittersweet to me than happy, honestly. Nothing made sense at first, but as the story progressed, the bits and pieces all began falling into place. Each unexplained fact is backed up by an explanation later on. Take, for example, when Masamune said that he and his friends played games that hurt them in the beginning; in the middle of the movie, he explained that it was because they felt no pain. From the confusing themes at the beginning to the heartbreaking themes at the end.

This film, to me, explained that no matter where you are or your circumstances, live in the moment. Do what you want. But this movie also held a second meaning, and this was experienced by Itsumi, who had to leave everything behind to continue growing. Both literally and figuratively. While leaving had left her hurt, it was also for the better. For both her and the two main leads. The future was hers to behold, leaving the two main leads in the timeline where time had stopped flowing long ago.

1. JOB DESCRIPTION

I have lived in Shizuoka Prefecture for 10 years. When I moved to Japan, I only knew a few Japanese words. So I found my first job as a construction worker through Hello Work, the Japanese employment security office. After that, I worked for a town development organization for 6 years with a local connection. Since then, I have been running my own private business, including supporting tourism to South Korea inbound and outbound, and marketing for online shopping.

2. CHARMS OF SHIZUOKA

Shizuoka Prefecture has both mountains and the sea, and offers a variety of foods such   as vegetables, meat, and seafood, but in my case, rice is the best. The prefecture is also famous for Japanese green tea, and Kawanehoncho town, where I live, is especially famous for its tea, so I always miss Shizuoka green tea when I visit other prefectures.

Kawanehoncho Town has a stunningly wonderful nature where recently lots of travelers from other prefectures come.  One of my favorite destination is Oku-oi Kojo Station (a station on a dam lake).  There is nothing but mountains, the lake, red railway bridges and hikers.  By facing the great nature, you are sure to forget unpleasant things, escape from your busy life, and rediscover yourself. The rich nature and the many hot springs also heal me. Each area in Shizuoka Prefecture has a variety of hot springs. Since Shizuoka is located between Tokyo and Osaka, it is easy to travel by Shinkansen (bullet trains) or expressways. It takes about one hour from Shizuoka Station to Tokyo and two hours to Osaka by Shinkansen.

3. LIVING ENVIRONMENT IN SHIZUOKA : HOUSING

I came to Japan after marrying a Japanese woman, so I had no trouble finding a house. However, most of the immigrants from abroad that I know live in dormitories or apartments provided by their companies, so it is best to consult with the company instead of trying to find one on your own. If you are a foreign national, it would be difficult to sign a contract, so I recommend that you ask the company or agency for assistance.  It happens not only in Shizuoka but all over Japan. I hope you find a good assistance when you start your life in Japan!!

Sometimes, I dare say, local regions like Shizuoka is difficult to find information about jobs and daily lives. However, with the recent increase in information for foreigners, such as this article, and real information of experiences of foreign residents, such as blogs and SNS, if you continue your efforts to find information, your efforts will be rewarded and all will be well!

4. LIVING ENVIRONMENT IN SHIZUOKA : NO INCONVENIENCE?

I live in a countryside, so a car is essential. Compared to other countries, driving schools in Japan are quite expensive and you will be required to study hard to learn Japanese traffic rules for safety drive.  My advice is that if you are young and do not have a driver's license, it is one of the ways to get it in your home country and practice driving before coming to Japan to get your license. Not to mention, please drive safely in Japan. Incidentally, some companies may provide transportation or a dormitory near the office. In that case, there is no need to rush to get it.

As for shopping, I am glad that QR payment Apps such as PayPay have been increased and made it more convenient. For foreigners, it is difficult to open a bank account or credit card and before those technologies became popular, I had to ask my wife whenever I wanted to buy something online.  We can buy anything online, so even if living in the countryside, I don't have much trouble with shopping.

5. MESSAGES

It depends on what kind of lifestyle you desire, but in genrral, Shizuoka is the most livable region in Japan. Though Kawanehoncho, where I live, is in the countryside, I honestly say that I have found my life here and am fully content with my wife and a child. Life here is not so inconvenient in terms of work, shopping, schools, doctors, etc., but is always embraced by beautiful nature, the ocean with fresh seafood, and needless to say, Mt.Fuji!　My dream for the future is to make my business bigger and to revitalize this area so that it is crowded with many tourists!

Tim’s use of the word magic. It bother me so much.

Like that word does equate with Ashley at all.

The 4 or 5 times we had seen her on our screens, she seemed to change Tim to her own version of what she likes. She also tried to get rid of Kojo. Yes fear of dogs is a thing but she went behind Kojos owner Tim and how the fuck she got Lucy’s number. Doubt her Dad gave it to her.

Well at least Ashley was true to herself in the don’t want kids and marriage talk.

Tim does want that but Ashley is a distraction.

Ashley and Tim really haven’t shown us magic at all with their scenes.

Tim you also trying to be hip to your younger girlfriend. Just no.

They could use we are great or good or even cool together but not magic.

Finally saw Sundays episode.

it explains to me how Lucy’s parents are towards her.

We all assuming that Vanessa was married to Patrick Chen but what if they werent but Patrick Chen just thought he and Vanessa would have their own.

Patrick Chen  began to have certain interactions with Lucy. Lucy didnt notice at first. 

Vanessa on the other hand just was though on Lucy and I feel that she resents Lucy cause she a reminder of the vow she broke as a doctor.

Listen: Justin Hicks' Bedlam Blues From Red Hot Sun Ra Tribute

"Bedlam Blues" is the second single from the Red, Hot & Ra: The Magic City. Justin Hicks performs the song that he wrote  after hearing Sun Ra's poem, "The Mirror Of Things To Be." He explained in a statement: 

“Some years ago I wrote a piece of a song based on Sun Ra’s poem “The Mirror Of Things To Be”, over the years it’s been a space for me to think through and speak on the state of humans who drive the world with their bodies. Sometimes it’s hard to feel how integral we all are to every single system we live with. Yet imagining a different way or other systems can be terrifying and disorienting. “

The Meshell Ndegecello curated album brings the late Afrofuturist jazz innovator Sun Ra's music into a modern musical world. The music is not a strict group of cover songs but compositions inspired by Sun Ra's work which was a mix of cosmic philosophies, pageantry, and an encyclopedia of jazz styles performed by his Arkestra. Marshall Allen, the leader of the Arkestra, is on the album in addition to rapper/punk rocker Pink Siifu, bassist Rahsaan Carter, drummers Kojo Roney, Deantoni Parks, and more. Red, Hot & Ra: The Magic City hits retail on April 12th.

So…. Do you think this UC assignment will trigger an actual relationship between Tim & Lucy?

I am struggling with the whole “secret” aspect of that idea. To me, having a secret relationship is out of character for both of them.

Yes, I know that Lucy/Nolan were “secret” back in Season 1, but I would think that would deter her from doing again. Having “secret relationships” is not a habit she should want to form.

And with Tim being so rules focused, I think he would really struggle with that.

I think the UC assignment churns up serious what if questions and ignites their desire for one another, which leads to awkwardness and wanting, sidelong glances, etc. such that whatever causes Tim to get hurt retriggers him wanting to be with Lucy FT/out loud.

How do you feel about all that and what do you a) want to see happen vs b) what do you think will happen with them?

Thank you for the (very thought-provoking) ask! I’ve been thinking about it all day.

I think you could argue that Tim and Lucy have been in a secret relationship since their encounter with Isabel in the very first episode. Not a romantic relationship at that point, certainly. But I think there were tons of moments neither of them ever told anyone else about. Think of the look of surprise between Angela and Talia when Lucy revealed she knew about Isabel in 1x5. They’ve always had something only they know about, separate from their relationships with everyone else. Then there’s the bigger things, like him inviting her to spend the night at his place (and that moment in his living room), and the way she comforted him about his father (I’m guessing their friends don’t even know she’s met his sister). How Lucy finally ended up being Tim’s aide. The audiobooks. When Lucy seduced Tim with a backstory.

Somehow they became the people who knew each other best (when Tim knew Lucy wasn’t really okay; when Lucy always knows how to support Tim). And yet they’ve always managed to keep that kind of hidden: (except for Nyla, Jackson, and I suspect Nolan, who have all seen feral!Tim firsthand, and Grey who is just all-knowing) everyone thinks Tim is just protective of Lucy because he was her TO (I guess?), and they assume Lucy gets Tim because of her psychology background.

So that’s what we see. Now, my theory is based on the idea that Lucy and Tim would never divulge their feelings to anyone, so, apart from dream sequences and maybe a trip to Jackson’s grave or talking to Kojo (all of which seem pretty melodramatic), they couldn’t tell us clearly where they’re at.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t totally on the same page after the kiss (I like you, you like me, and we *will* end up together). (Side note: the show I’ve seen this style in most clearly is La Reina del Flow, where they had to introduce a therapist character just to give an excuse for the heroine to reveal her feelings for the hero because otherwise it would have taken 45 episodes for us to find out.)

So I think they’ve probably already broken up with their insignificant others (honestly I imagine Lucy dumped Chris on Mother’s Day). I think they know they will be together, and it’s only a question of when. Will they hold off on everything until she’s promoted to detective? Or will they allow themselves to be together before then but keep it a secret? Given their chemistry, I’m going to bet on the latter. Especially because I don’t think they’ll be able to put the genie back in the bottle after getting to be affectionate undercover.

Now here’s where it gets dicey. You say a secret relationship would be out of character for both of them, but I disagree. 

Lucy loves UC (and her hot-for-Tim characters), and so I think sneaking around with Tim would be kind of exhilarating for her. And Tim feels like a kid around Lucy (think about the pranks and bets), so I can see him enjoying it too. The issue is, because he feels like a kid around Lucy, I worry he might conclude that means it’s immature and therefore not serious. And if he feels that way I imagine he’d be very sensitive to the fact that she’s never been in a serious romantic relationship before (which I imagine Chris might bitterly divulge at some point, or even Nolan, thinking he’s helping), and he could suffer some real doubt. To me, this is the main issue they will have to work through.

Oh and if Tim rescues Lucy again, that could be very tough too. He was so uncomfortable about her saying he saved her from the barrel, and I think he would suspect any feelings she had toward him were simply displacement. So here’s hoping Lucy will be the one rescuing Tim instead.

I don’t see undercover work as an issue because I think Lucy will decide it’s not really for her and also that she’s too high profile for it to be a good idea. And let’s face it, roleplaying with Tim will be a hell of a lot more satisfying, and you know he’ll be down. In the words of Nova, I think they’ll have fun 😉

So I hope that answers your questions. I acknowledge there’s a possibility I’m totally wrong about where they are on their feelings realization, and if that’s the case I’ll be pretty bummed. And if they cheat I’ll be more than a little disappointed. But we’ll have to see, no use borrowing trouble.

The Beach - a The Rookie/Chenford Fanfic

“7-Adam-11, show us responding,” Jackson said over the radio as Lucy leaned back against her headrest defeatedly.

“I didn’t think I’d ever say this but I really don’t want to go to the beach.” “Like ever again,” she added even as she took the first turn towards their destination. 

LA was 4 days into a record heat wave and over that time Lucy had learnt a few important things 1) Unsurprisingly, extreme heat causes everyone to flock to the ocean. 2) It also makes people extremely irritable. 3) Lots of irritable people packed together in large groups leads to chaos and 4) wool uniforms are not ideal attire for patrolling beaches in temperatures around 100. 

So after 4 days she was over it. She had spent Monday with Jackson getting sworn at, honked at and nearly run over as they directed traffic at the busiest beaches in the city. She spent Tuesday with Tim breaking up beach brawls, confiscating contributing alcohol and watching bikini clad woman flirt with Tim. At least 8 different woman had asked him to rub sunscreen on them or suggested he take off his shirt to cool down. She had rolled her eyes so much she had given herself a headache. Although it may have been the sun. Yesterday, her and Nolan and responded to a report of a missing child who was feared drowned or kidnapped but turned out had followed the music of an ice cream truck four blocks and was found, about 30 minutes after the officers arrived, happily eating a fudgiscle. However, they were kept at the beach for the remainder of their shift by various citizens with complaints ranging from seagulls, wasps and possible sharks to thieves, streakers and possible melanoma. 

Now her and Jackson were headed back to a beach where the adjacent shrubbery was currently being consumed by a blazing bush fire, which was in all likelihood human caused and spreading fast. Therefore all hands were on deck as the LAPD worked with the LAFD to keep civilians safe, extinguish the fire and investigate its cause.

The rest of her shift passed in a blur as they interviewed witnesses, cordoned off the area, issued evacuation orders, ensured those who needed it got medical attention, joined a production line passing large buckets of water from the ocean to where the fire was burning and debriefed with their team which included Nolan and Tim, and Lopez and Harper. Luckily in the end, the fire was successfully extinguished, those living nearby were safe and happily back in their homes and the perpetrator, a cigarette butt flicker, was caught. But not until nearly 11pm by which time the entire team was exhausted, scorching and covered in soot and ash. With their job done the team of 6 headed away from the scene back along the beach to where they had parked their shops. They were right on the sand where they left them to create a barrier preventing people from wandering toward the fire and the beach around them was abandoned. Likely due to a combination of the late hour, the fire itself and the fact that the stretch of beach they were on was only accessible by walking about a mile from one of the main beaches on either side or by scrambling down the steep cliff behind them.

“Anybody want a cold one,” Nolan asked when they reached the vehicles, “well a hot one I guess” he amended as he pulled out a six pack he had confiscated earlier in the day from the trunk of his shop. Everybody made a face at the offer of hot beer but since the only light around came from the shops headlights shining in the opposite direction Nolan didn’t see them.

“Screw it, I’ll take one,” Angela said.

“Wesley and Patrice took the baby to meet the extended Evers clan so I have nowhere to be and now that I’m no longer breastfeeding I can have whatever I want. Even if that’s gross beer that’s been sitting in a hot car all day,” she explained.

“If we dig a hole near the water line it will fill with cold seawater and we can make a makeshift beer fridge,” Jackson suggested but Angela had already opened her can and was sipping away.

“I’ll help dig the hole,” Nyla offered. “I’d rather hangout here then go back to the station to do paperwork and Lila’s with her dad so I also have no where I have to be.”

“I’ll call Grey and tell him we’re clocking out and will do the paperwork in the morning,” Tim offered.

“Your staying?” Lucy asked a little too excitedly, “what about Kojo?” she quickly added.

“Tamara called several hours ago and offered to give him dinner, take him for a walk and put him to bed.”“She saw the fire on the news and rightly assumed we’d have our hands full,” he finished.

30 minutes later they all sat in the sand around their makeshift beer fridge. Shoes, socks and button up shirts discarded and pants pulled up to their knees. 3 flashlights were in the middle of the group, pointing skyward, their handles buried in the sand. They laughed as they went around and told stories.

“How is it still this hot?” Lucy asked a while later.  It was after midnight and the temperature had yet to even consider dropping below 90. 

She pulled her white t-shirt away from her skin fanning, herself. 

“I’m going swimming,” she declared ready to stand up.

“Your going swimming? Right Now? In that?” Tim asked gesturing to her cotton tee and woolen pants.

Lucy shook her head. “I was just going to go in my underwear but now that I think about it I don’t really want to have to drive back to the station in soaking wet underwear.”

Tim nodded as if this is what he expected but Lucy didn’t see him and continued.

“I guess I’ll just skinny dip,” she concluded.

Tim managed to both spit out and choke on the sip of beer he had just taken.

Everybody else’s faces were turned towards Tim and wearing amused expressions but they were saved his annoyance due to the limited light and the fact that his attention was still fully on Lucy.

“What?” She asked Tim, “It’s not a big deal. It’s dark. Plus everybody here has already seen me naked.” 

“Well except you,” she added, which earned another spit take from Tim.

Lucy rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress a smile. She loved seeing Tim flustered, especially when it was her doing.

“What?” He finally managed to ask in a strained voice after a few harsh coughs to clear his throat.

“Everybody here’s seen Lucy naked but you,” Lopez offered, “although that was bound to change sometime soon,” she added.

Lucy and Tim both turned to look at her wide eyed. Nolan and Nyla were both hiding smirks and Jackson wore an expression of mainly panic as he spoke.

“She’s drunk. She has no idea what she’s saying,” Jackson offered before turning to look daggers at Angela and whisper something in her ear.

Lucy thought she heard the words bet, interference and disqualified but she couldn’t be sure.

When he finished Angela addressed them again. “Sorry, apparently my tolerance took a nose dive since pre-pregnancy. I didn’t mean anything by that I got you mixed up with Smitty and what’s her face,” she finished waving her hand disparagingly.

“Hmm,” Lucy said clearly not buying her lame excuse but Tim still had his mind on other things.

“Why has everybody else here seen you naked?” he asked, his tone almost suspicious.

Lucy laughed. “Are you jealous?”

He fixed her with his best TO look. “No.”

Lucy suppressed the urge to roll her eyes yet again and answered.

“Communal showers at work,” she began gesturing to Nyla and Angela. “Best friends and roommates” she added pointing to Jackson. “Life gets crazy. Sometimes closing doors or throwing on clothes just isn’t a priority,” she explained seeing Tim’s confused expression. “Also we had to help each other into and out of the bath after we were injured.” She didn’t have to specify her kidnapping or the beating Jackson took to take down Doug Stanton. This group knew. “It’s kind of ironic that when everything hurts all you want is a warm bath but when everything hurts it’s nearly impossible to get yourself into and out of a bathtub,” she finishes. “Oh and Nolan and I used to date.” She says it as almost an afterthought, super casual. But all the former TOs still look at her with shock.

“You and Nolan?” Nyla asks with a laugh. “Really?” “No offense,” she adds addressing Nolan.

“Ah, none taken?” Nolan replies, clearly confused by her reaction.

“When?” Lopez asks looking between the two P2s.

“For a couple months while we were in the academy. We called it off shortly after we started at Mid-Wilshire,” Nolan supplied.

“Wow, I just can’t picture it,” Angela continued shaking her head.

“Why would you want to picture it?” Tim spat. Then seemed to catch himself and schooled his scowl back into a blank expression.

“Why’d you call it off, anyway?” Angela asked. Half actually curious. Half just trying to do her friend a solid and take the attention off him.

“Bishop warned me that dating a fellow cop would brand me and could ruin my career,” Lucy answered and thought she saw Tim flinch. It was impossible to tell for sure with just the flashlights, nevertheless she added, “Somethings matter more-“ she was staring right at Tim now “-are worth the gossip, the assumptions, the risk.” As she said it she saw his expression change but she couldn’t read it. “But our relationship wasn’t one of those things. We’re better as friends, anyway,” she finished addressing the whole group but looking at Nolan specifically for confirmation.

“Agreed,” Nolan nodded holding up his beer.

“To friends,” Jackson said clicking his to Nolan’s.

“To friends,” everybody joined in clinking their cans together.

“So who’s coming skinny dipping with me?” Lucy asked as she started to make her way back to the vehicles where she could leave her clothes in a place where they’d stay sand free.

“I will,” said Angela, “pregnancy and caring for a baby really makes modesty go out the window. The two beers I’ve had don’t hurt either.” She began to follow Lucy to the cars.

“I’m in,” Jackson offered, “with you two practically glowing in the dark nobody will even notice me.” He teased as he got up to join them, earning a playful shove from Lucy.

“Nobody’s here to see anything anyway.” She retorted.

“Go ahead. I might join you later.” Nolan said and Nyla and Tim nodded in agreement.

10 minutes later. Lucy, Angela and Jackson’s clothes were inside Jackson and Lucy’s shop and they were out in the ocean. It dropped off quickly so they weren’t that far away from the beach even though the water came to just below Lucy’s shoulders. After four days of blazing heat and the fire on top today, the cool water felt like heaven to her. She dipped and dove through the water, relishing the cool and wiped at her face and hands to remove the soot that had coated them earlier. Beside her Angela was trying to show Jackson what her son does when they put him in the water. This led to reminiscing about childhood summers spent at the beach or in backyard and community pools. And before they knew it they were playing old games from those days. John and Nyla had joined them by this time. Claiming some combination of escaping the heat, joining the fun and more beer as the motivation. They were currently having breath holding contests.

“I win!” Jackson exclaimed as he came up for air to find everyone else already up.

“You cheated,” Lucy argued, “I saw you come up while I was still under. I had my eyes open.”

“I did not. Plus it’s pitch black under there you couldn’t possibly have seen anything.”

“Did Jackson come up?” Lucy yelled at Tim who was still sitting on the shore.

“I don’t know. I wasn’t watching,” he replied casually with a slight shrug.

“Yes you were,” Angela argued, “you haven’t taken your eyes off Lucy since she got in here,” then realizing what she said she quickly ducked back under the water. 

Everybody still above the surface froze.

Then after a beat. “So did he come up or not. I need to know if I won,” Nyla asked, all business.

“He floated to the surface but didn’t lift his head up. He won,” Tim offered defeatedly.

“Told you!” Jackson bragged.

“Rematch. 3,2,1 go,” shouted Nyla as everybody ducked back under the water. Lucy a split second behind everybody else as her attention was still on Tim. 

She came up about 30 seconds later just as a wave was passing by her and managed to swallow a good serving of water. She coughed and sputtered but before she knew it Jackson and Nolan were beside her and she was assuring them she was Ok just needed a bit of time to catch her breath. As she swam towards the shore to rest in the shallows she noticed Tim was just sitting back down and his pants were wet to just above the knee. But she didn’t let herself focus on it.

She swam to just in front of where he sat laying on her stomach on the ocean floor, head just above the water.

“You OK?” He asked shifting his eyes to her for the first time since she swam up.

“Ya fine, just swallowed a little water,” she assured him.

“Looks like you guys are having fun out there,” he nodded indicating the group still farther out.

“Ya the water feels amazing. You can’t honestly tell me that you aren’t hot.” She had meant it literally. He was sitting in above 90 degree weather with wool pants on. But then she realized he had taken off his white shirt and his muscled chest and stomach were currently on full display and the word took on an entirely different meaning. She was thankful for the darkness as it hid her blush but even that couldn’t hide the fact that she was definitely staring. 

“The ladies on the beach the other day will be so disappointed they’re missing this,” she teased gesturing to his bare upper half, hoping to give a probable explanation for the staring.

He gave a short laugh. “Not as disappointed as the meat bags who were wolf whistling at you will be that they’re missing that.” As he gestured at her he finally let himself actually take her in. Her hair was still up in its low work bun leaving her entire back exposed. The upper half of which was completely taken up by a tattoo, he had never seen before, although the light was too limited for him to make out the design. The rest of her body was hidden in shadows except her face which was now free of soot and make-up making her look young and vulnerable. Freckles brought out by the last few days of blazing sun were speckled across the bridge of her nose. Her mouth was twisted in thought and her eyes sparkled in the light of the flashlights. She really was beautiful.

While those thoughts flew through Tim’s mind Lucy was thinking about his comment about the wolf whistlers. That had happened at the very start of their shift and lasted no more than two seconds. Lucy wasn’t even sure they had been whistling at her and she had completely forgotten about it until Tim brought it up just now. Funny that he would remember. 

 They were both pulled out of their thoughts by a sudden commotion further out in the water:

“DID YOU NOT THERE IS NO PIE!”

“DO NOT THERE IS NO DIE!”

“DO OR DO NOT THERE IS NO TRY!”

Were being yelled over each other.

“What are they doing?” Tim asked looking at the group out in the water.

They were in a circle. Jackson had just given Nolan a high five then they were under again.

“I think they are playing the guess what I said under the water game,” Lucy chuckled.

Tim was about to reply but he was cut off by “How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood” being shouted in unison followed by bickering about who said it first.

“I’m going back out to join them. You going to come?” Lucy asked turning her attention from the group back to Tim.

“I don’t need to be a part of that.”

“Come on Tim. You’re hot and dirty.” She still meant it literally. Really. He was covered in soot. Stupid double entendres.

He raised is eyebrows.

“Just get in the water,” Lucy said splashing water at him to vent her frustration with how flustered she was getting.

He wiped the water from his face and a small smile appeared at the corner of his mouth. “Fine.”

Lucy beamed back at him as he stood up and walked back to the shop to discard his remaining clothes then turned her attention back to her friends.

“It’s not Angeles Direct, you’ve already guessed that three times,” Nyla was saying to Jackson

“That’s what it sounds like,” he argued “and it’s definitely closer to that than ‘embroidery period.’”

“That was my first guess. I heard wrong,” Nyla shot back.

“Oh ya cuz ‘and was dressed’ and ‘indoors divest’ were so much closer.”

Any further argument was cut-off by Nolan. “I’ve got it: Angela’s the best,” he said confidently.

“Yes and yes,” Angela confirmed.

“Your turn Nyla.” 

There was a brief silence as they all went back under the water followed by a flurry of screamed “this is stupid.”

“Happy now?” Came a quieter voice beside her and Lucy nearly jumped out of the water. She had been so wrapped up watching her friends she hadn’t even noticed that Tim had made his way back down the beach and was now sitting beside her in the water.

She smiled and nodded. “Aren’t you?”

He gave a non-committal shrug. “We’ll see after I get roped into whatever’s going on out there,” he offered but there was no bite to it. He was even smiling, although mostly with his eyes, as he looked at their friends.

“Well let’s go find out,” Lucy replied as she led the way into the deeper water.

As they approached the group they watched them go up and down and listened to their guesses.

“And further than game”

“Comforters at game”

“Temperatures endgame”

“Stanford is endgame”

“Checkers is a game.” “At least that’s a real sentence”

“Bradford has game?” “That can’t be right he most definitely doesn’t”

Then just as Tim and Lucy joined the group “Chenford is endgame!” Shouted by Angela who upon realizing Tim and Lucy had joined them turned to Jackson.

“This ones not on me it was your sentence.”

Jackson stood stunned for a second looking desperately between Tim, Lucy and Angela then swiftly closed his eyes and yelled “MARCO.”

There was a brief silence then Nolan yelled “POLO” and everyone was swimming away from Jackson at top speed. Everyone except Tim who was giving Lucy a look that said. “See what you got me into? I told you so.” 

But she was busy swimming off with the others, grateful for the distraction. So he rolled his eyes and joined the game. The water did feel amazing although he wasn’t about to admit that to her.

Calls of MARCO POLO and laughter filled the air as everybody took their turn being it: Jackson tagged Nolan who tagged Lucy who tagged Nyla who tagged Jackson who tagged Tim who tagged Nolan who tagged Angela who tagged Jackson who tagged Tim who tagged Lucy. Well he meant to tag Lucy. He reached his arm out and jumped towards her “POLO” but she was closer than he thought and instead of the tips of his finger tagging her shoulder he jumped right into her. He hit her hard and she responded to being knocked off her feet and down into the water instinctively by reaching for the nearest thing to prevent drowning, which happened to be him. So when he opened his eyes her arms were around his neck and her legs around his hips and her face was only about an inch from his own as she coughed up water for the second time that day.

“Are you ok?” He asked moving a piece of hair that had fallen into her face behind her ear.

She nodded but continued to cough as he absentmindedly stroked her back.

 “You caught me by surprise,” she breathed “I didn’t know we were playing full contact Marco Polo.”

He let out a relieved laugh, “I’m sorry.”

“A real Tim Bradford apology I never thought I’d see it in person,” Lucy teased earning an eye roll from Tim. This close Lucy could see all the different shades of blue in his eyes even in the dark. 

“It was an accident.”

“So it wasn’t some sort of Tim Test to see how I would handle a fight in the water?”

“No. You got your last Tim test a year ago when you stopped being my rookie.”

“I can’t believe it’s been a year already,” she said. “Then again we’ve been through enough for an entire career,” she added as her hand reflexively moved from his neck where it was playing with his hair to the tattoo on her her ribs.

That’s when it dawned on her just how close her and Tim were, pressed together without a shred of clothing between them. She had felt so comfortable and content she hadn’t realized the gravity of the situation and what it could lead to. She was about to put some space between them when his hand covered hers over the tattoo marking her supposed day of death. The day he saved her from being buried alive. Although he would say it marked the first day of the rest of her life. The day she saved herself. 

And the desire to move away died in an instant. 

“I kept it,” she said quietly, “because of what you said.” “Because it’s a reminder that I’m a survivor. And that my team will always have my back.”

Tim was looking at her with an expression more open than she’d ever seen. “I have one of those,” he replied softly lifting her hand up and moving it to rest on his lower left abdomen. She was confused at first but as she felt the skin beneath her finger tips she realized it was scarred. The scar from when he was shot on her second day and she pulled him out of the line of gunfire.

She smiled and looked directly into his eyes. 

“It’s a good thing we have each other in our lives,”

“Sure is,”

She was just about to lean in and close the distance between them when a voice interrupted.

“Hey you two. Keep it PG or get a room. This is a family outing.” It was Nyla.

Lucy laughed as she untangled her self from Tim and in that moment she realized two things. 1) this was most definitely her family and 2) she would very happily come back to the beach. Maybe next time she’d just bring Tim, maybe even as her boyfriend.

Thoughts on last nights episode.

Tim Bradford:

My gosh it should be illegal how swoonworthy this man was in this entire episode. From how he talked to kojo when he was being a pain to how he responded to Angela so fast. Since the beginning of the series, I have adored Angela and Tim’s friendship. I’m still super convinced that there are conversations about Lucy that have never been had on screen for us to see but based on their interactions it’s clear, she’s a topic in some way shape or form. I LOVED Tim at the dress shop from validating Angela’s desire and choices for her wedding dress and not letting her feel shame for her pregnancy. Also I loved that Jackson and Lucy showed up to the call. Also can we say teamwork when Lucy grabbed the bride and Tim tripped her. I had to rewatch it a couple times to ensure he purposefully did that and he did. Major props to mr Eric Winter because he brings so much depth to this character. And him telling her “looking good officer Chen” he doesn’t really look like he’s mocking her. I think the situation is hilarious but he genuinely looks kinda proud. And it’s sad that that was probobally the nicest thing someone said to her that entire day besides Jackson that even remotely resembled encouragement.

Also continuity win here, Tim was in a social situation and he didn’t reveal himself to be a cop which lines up with his conversation with Nolan when Lucy was undercover. Well done writers. I’m proud of you.

Loved Angela and Tim trying out desserts and her asking him to be the man of honor. He looked so terrified when she went down on her knees too 😂. He’s been scared a lot this week by the women he cares about me thinks.

And finally, the burning of the wedding book. So satisfying and again so swoon worthy. Angela is in awe of her best friend and it shows and we are all here for it.

John Nolan:

So I know a lot of people don’t like Nolan’s character and I understand, after grace and Armstrong he hasn’t really been doing too much growth. But! I’m gonna offer a different option s I think one of the strengths of season 3 is John’s stability s which is ironic because of how foolish he was at the end of season 2. But I’ve always loved John Nolan because of his age and difference in life experiences compared to the other characters. Plus the way he talks to suspects and victims produces so much hope to me. It helps me to remember that there are men and women like John Nolan on police forces that genuinely protect and serve the communities they are in and want to see the best treatment. And he’s consistent. I like John Nolan because he provides a unique perspective and his character has become more confident in his role in the force and in his life ( friend, father ect.) and is trying to live his own life ( letting go of his moms toxic relationship, letting Henry choose his own career path, supporting Lucy and Jackson). Also the scenes with Nyla are fire. I love their friendship and banter (completely platonic) they’re hilarious. And it’s a miracle too because I absolutely hated this character when she had her first episode. What can I say I am a lover no longer a hater.

Jackson and Lucy

I love this friendship and it is very strong at this point. There’s genuine respect and admiration for the other and again such a strong platonic bond. So the scene with Lucy’s mom. Hmm it seemed kind of rushed to me. And it was odd because the last time we saw Lucy’s mom she didn’t really mention anything about her dislike for her profession, she was mostly changing stuff around and complaining about her husband. Although it had been firmly determined to me after the episode in season 1 with Lucy’s dad that they are not supportive. I guess I wasn’t aware of how unsupportive they really were. That was sad though to see her breakdown after being her being so hopeful about them being proud of her 😢. It makes Tim’s words more meaningful to her I think because he used the word impress to describe what he thought of her end of training evaluation.

When Lucy and Jackson found that child. Huge shout out to Tim and Angela’s training because of how they used it to locate and save that little girl. And grey is such a proud poppa. He made a good point about expectations and realities. Sometimes an accomplishment of something meaningful is not celebrated but that doesn’t make it any less important.

I legit cried when Jackson came in with the necklace for Lucy. That was beautiful and I love the west family ( bring back Jackson’s dad!) and Jackson dudeee best friend award especially about requiring an apology. ( it would be a great prompt for a fanfic writer to write about that conversation)

Nolan and Ben

I LOVE this friendship it is the first one I fell for in season 1 when I binged this show in the first place. Ben is like an epic friend and honestly I’m so glad we got to see some adult conflict in that friendship. Most importantly I loved the ending scene because Nolan showed his age and wisdom by apologizing and going to his friend and wanted to make it right. He knew the importance of preserving a relationship over being right.

All in all the theme of the night was friendship ( I’m more than confident with saying this) and we got to see all the different facets of it: loyalty, banter, support, forgiveness and reconciliation, a true testament to agape love. And it was impressive that the entire episode focused on that and still managed to be a cop show. And they were soooooooo realistic and I think many viewers could see different versions of the friendships they have in their own lives. I know I did.

I will be so unbelievably sad if they don’t renew this show for me.
