was gonna post this on my art blog but I want ppl to see this. Kooleen, if you’re out there, if you somehow manage to see this, I would like you to know that for the past few months you have been hanging by a thread with the racism and sexualising jaiden but the fanart you made of characters is the last fucking straw. That’s not dr. Ratio that’s Mr. Algebra. That’s not Kenji Sato that’s. Okay I dont even know what he is in ur art. That’s not Charlie Morningstar that’s Charcoal Nightmoon idfk ok. My girls and my mans don’t deserve ur Yassifying treatment. You butcher every character you touch. Sleep with one eye open because I am coming for you.

thank you so much to everyone who contributed - the video discussing kooleen's actions and the problems with the common excuse of "i can't draw POC in my style" is now live!

The Kooleen drama has made me realize how iffy I draw profiles for my poc characters. So here’s me attempting to correct Heart’s profile from my concept sheet (old one is on the right).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I referenced this youtube tutorial here !! I totally recommend it for my fellow artists who want to combat the racist triangle rule for side profiles that’s been normalized by media such as anime.

This is probably very controversial but I think people should just leave Kooleen alone, she did an apology and took the video down, she doesn't need to draw black people
Sure maybe she needs to be a little more cultured but that's about it because she doesn't have the same opinion or appeal to a certain thing that you might have the opposite reaction to, wow! a different opinion it's like we're two different beings!
Kooleen did enough for now she doesn't need to appeal to you, she was very honest about her opinion and humor from the get go, and her tutorials are based of her style and what she's comfortable with and I think it's disgusting that people are forcing this onto her

I know this happened a long ass time ago but Kooleen changing the appearance/sexualizing someone who has body dysmorphia is disgusting. Jaiden literally hid her face for years in fear of this happening like wtf
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I’m not Asian so correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t she just remove all of Jaiden’s Asian features?

i see people say "artists can draw what they want!" in defense of people like kooleen and samdoesarts and like YES you can draw whatever you want. but if someones only drawing conventionally attractive people i think its normal to think theyre boring and lame as hell. so write that down.

Kooleen rant from a Filipino artist
When I first heard kooleen (before side profile drama) about her slandering other artist's art instead of humble constructive criticism, I will not support her and her egoistic bigotry
When I find out that she's Filipino as I was, I feel ashamed myself as a Filipino artist on how terrible person she was and disgrace to Filipino art community. I need a good artist to follow who we're like me, a Filipino artist
Kooleen is comes out as colorist and fatphobic, she didn't realize that colorism and beauty standards are problematic there in the Philippines as other many countries
The ignorance and lack of self awareness she have is how absolutely close minded she was
I heard a rumor that she's studying nursing, interesting that she's one of those high school bullies went into nursing pipeline right?
Kooleen Hun, you disgrace to young Filipino artists like me, not just Filipino artists but disgrace to the entire art community on how egoistic you are
There are lot of talented Filipino artists who are better to follow than Kooleen

Practicing women of colour after learning of the Kooleen drama. Let’s get something straight:
1. no art style in the world is “unable” to represent any and all ethnicities unless you absolutely insist on same-face-syndrome.
2. your pastel colour palette is not “incompatible with Black characters”. Lots of Black girls love pastel fashion, and phenotype isn’t just colour.
3. “incorrect facial proportions” aren’t a thing. The triangle method is BS. Rihanna’s lips and chin stick out further than her nose, are you gonna tell her she’s anatomically incorrect..? God damn she’s gorgeous!
4. “but my aesthetic” just say you think certain ethnic features are ugly and go. You can draw whatever I want, but don’t “fix” ethnic faces using your racist little triangle or whatever. Alba Flores’ nose is perfect the way it is. Draw it like that or draw someone else.

art youtube is overwhelming AF.
sifting through all the art advice available on youtube (and other sources!) can be overwhelming AF. an ocean of voices screaming DO THIS! DON'T DO THAT! YOU MUST DO THIS!
i feel like no one ever really talks about that.
also: some ways i cut through some of this noise to find signal, below the cut.
i mean, some of these videos are legitimately helpful! and many are drama about the latest outrageous, racist thing some artist *cough cough* kooleen *ahem* did or said in a 'how to draw X' tutorial just noise. still more of them contain outright bad advice, or advice that can't easily be personalized. (i can tell you right now that 'you must draw everyday!!!' is terrible fucking advice. not everyone can set aside time to do that, and guilt is the world's worst motivator for enjoyment. ever. just stop)
and almost all of it hides behind titles designed to raise your anxiety levels and get you to click. sadly, this is the nature of the platform. emotional engagement drives traffic, and every YT creator is trying to maximize that as best as they can. i don't fault anyone for that; people's livelihoods depend on these streams.
i have advised novice artists to try to narrow things down as much as possible, to 'get granular' about what they want to learn: painting skin. drawing hands, or noses, or faces, or feet, or poses. drawing more expressive lines. workflow, for traditional art or the raster graphics editor of their choice. it doesn't always help: for every subject i've listed, there exists a veritable firehose of videos about it.
so might i suggest a ruthless pruning here?
just go with whatever thumbnail looks interesting and is the least shouty/dogmatic about what it promises to teach you. you will probably miss out on some good advice, but the effect of all the preaching is cumulative. and your sanity is worth it. i promise.
if you don't have the time or patience for hour-long videos, either watch at 1.5-2x speed or skip ahead for the content you want.
look for specific solutions for your specific frustrations. and emphasize the process. how does this artist accomplish what you want to do? how do they lay out lineart, begin the rendering process, and why? can they explain that in a way that makes sense for you (if this is something you need)? if not, don't waste your time watching. i remember breathing the world's biggest sigh of relief on hearing a professional animator confess that shadows don't always have to make sense for a piece of work to look right.
look for ideas on how to break what you see into scaffolding. by this i mean 3D approximations on a 2D surface, on which you can draw guidelines for proportions. ultimately, this is the key to 'drawing from imagination' and even to successfully working with reference photos. videos on how an artist draws eyes from one specific angle will not necessarily help you draw eyes from other angles. not unless they also touch on eyeball shape and position on the head. and how perspective changes the shapes you see. and...
lastly, how do you feel about the video you're watching? if the creator's voice or sense of humor annoys you, or you don't love the stereotypical way they draw female bodies, or they're actually kinda racist/ableist, or whatever–you're allowed to nope out and look for another source of info. there is a lot to be said for the skill of picking diamonds out of manure... but you can find diamonds of similar quality that aren't coated in shit, too.

While working with a friend for a communal organization that does different types of talks, seminars and discussions (as Graphic Designers), there was a topic that called my attention.
Well, many did, but this one fits here more than the others we discussed this week that just started.
And is the decay of the art community as a whole, same with the writing community (the writing a bit less, even when is also cracking by many factors). I never dig on YouTube “the art community” because it appears the “commentary side of it” that is literally a disaster with them calling each other pedos, thinking always in which one is more popular than the other or who does better video edits or better art.
But I decided to do it this time, and what did I find? The drama in between the “artist” Hopeless Peaches and the toy reviewer Lio Convoy. Moreover, another drama with Kooleen (well, Kooleen is normal to be messed in any of these, since I think she doesn't think much before speaking). And it called my attention, how the art community decays from being “usually friendly”, to now calling themselves ableist, pedos, cloud chasers, racists, etc. But I suppose that what it's shown on YouTube is just like not the entirety of the art community, so I decided to dig on Facebook and even here and other social media.
And is like fandoms now nitpicking for everything. If the right skin color, the right sexual orientation, gender, if you pro ship or not (excluding serious cases that deserve to be seriously ranted about). And I'm not sure if is the decay of the community itself or if it's just the society as a whole that needs to take their toxicity to everything it does. Something happened, that I can't explain from past generations, and even mine, that people became like souless and think that art is just produced to fit their expectations.
Same with writing. Thinking that artists owe them something just because of sharing the same space as the non-writers-artists. Furthermore, artists, trying to insanely compete within each other, forgetting that there's always a public for any kind of art or even a fic (letting the IA thing aside). I don't know what happened, but every time I google the artist/writing community, there's always some kind of drama going on.
And it's just that. The society as a whole, in decay.

If there is anybody wanting to argue about Kooleen being cancelled please do, my messages are wide open
I of course will be saying that cancelling her was an over reaction, an opinion very easy to argue against

Admittedly feeling very fulfilled that the recent Kooleen drama has brought more of a limelight towards how mis-informed mean-spirited her content is.
