Welcome to the Showdown of the Ships, basically, where I’ll be posting polls over the next couple of days in a tournament style to see which Hetero-passing tumblr ship comes out on top!

Notes—

The ship has to have THRIVED on tumblr. Like, it’s all I saw on my dash. It was everywhere. It became part of tumblrs code. It STILL shows up on shipping lists years after it was created. Ok, after learning about Adrien getting shafted in the finale for Bug Noire to exist I thought of an alternative way that fight could go to fit both Adrien and Bug Noire in, and with some tweaks I think that it could partially work for how things go in PB au:

So my idea is that the finale fight goes pretty much like Chat Blanc. Ladynoir confront Monarch in the Agreste manor, the 2 v 1 eventually makes it to the evil lair, Adrichat sees Emilie and gets overwhelmed by his emotions.

Monarch sends an Akuma at him, this time without punting his own kid halfway across the city, but before Chat Blanc 2: Electric Boogaloo can get started, Adrien manages to rip off the Black Cat Miraculous and yeet it at Ladybug. The Akuma still gets to him, entering his jacket or phone or something, and Bug Noire unifies.

Bug Noire keeps Monarch too preoccupied to fully Akumatize Adrien, so the fight stays 1 v 1 for a bit, until Monarch is able to use Adrien fully as a hostage to get both the Black Cat and Ladybug Miraculous from Bug Noire

Gabriel makes his Wish, and it's made clear in the epilogue that the whole world has been rewritten so everyone, Marinette included, genuinely think he's the hero who finally stopped Monarch, but it ends on Adrienette feeling like something isn't quite right...

Now, to tweak this for PB, I had the idea of Marinette getting between the Akuma and Chat to prevent Chat Blanc, and her giving him the Ladybug Earrings so we get Monarch vs ...Mister Noir I guess?

Instead of using Marinette as a hostage, Monarch is the one to knock part of the ceiling onto Emilie's coffin (why the fuck did they have Maribug do that in cannon???) to distract Mister Noir.

Monarch tries to take the Miraculous while Mister Noir is keeping Emilie from being crushed, but Adrien is able to summon Gimmi before he can to wish for it to be impossible for Gabriel to ever use another Miraculous, which has the Equivalent Exchange side affects of making Adrien, Marinette, and their allies unable to any Miraculous ever again as well.

((Something which could also help Marinette realize Chloe's had character development bc she can't use any Miraculous either, so the cosmic energy of the universe or whatever felt Chloe was still her ally despite everything that happened with the both of them))

Where do I even start? When she sees him as Adrien, Marinette is in love. However, when he is Chat Noir, she sees him as her friend and superhero partner. When he sees her as Ladybug, he is head over heels. However, when she is Marinette, he sees her as his very good friend that he looks at with the SOFTEST SMILES EVER. (But he still insists she’s just a friend.) In another timeline, when he found out Ladybug and Marinette were the same person, he didn’t hesitate in asking her out immediately. For some time (though not very long, unfortunately), Ladybug thirsted over Chat Noir. Currently, Adrien and Marinette are dating while Ladybug and Chat Noir are just friends. They finally kissed and remembered it and it wasn’t to “save” the other person from the villain’s powers!! (Ladynoir have kissed so many times. Once, Ladybug insisted it was to save him. He was under the influence of a villain that him hate her and her line of reasoning was that a true love’s kiss would help. When she kissed him and it worked, she didn’t think anything of it. Another time, they lost their memories due to a villlain’s powers and assumed (incorrectly) that they were dating. Another time, it was during a villain induced dream of their deepest desires where they got married and had children together. They never thought anything of it.) They’re so very frustrating but so so cute.

Despite the antagonistic relationship between Riku and Sora during KH 1, these two have been best friends since childhood.  Kairi quickly joined their friend group as a child. Now all three are trying to keep each other safe and pull the other two away from the darkness.

Miraculous Movie vs Show: Which did Romance Better?

Neither the movie nor the show is a solid piece of storytelling. They’re both riddled with flaws and with fun, cute moments. So, for my own entertainment, I decided to consider both and decide which one did the essentials better. First up: let's look at some core elements to decide which has the better romance?

Adrienette

While Adrinette is barely in the movie, it’s in it enough for us to compare the big moments: Marinette falling in love, their developing friendship, and Marinette asking Adrien out. That first item is an easy win for the show. While the umbrella scene and the library scene have similar pacing and emotional beats, the umbrella scene still wins hands down because it’s more than an act of basic human decency. Adrien is being kind to a person who wildly misjudged him, establishing a key element of his character and making us understand why he deserves a role beyond ‘pretty-boy crush’. It also elevates Marinette’s crush to something that feels true. Like she fell for him, not his looks or celebrity status.

The other two points are where things get tricky.

Because the movie didn’t drag the status quo out for 5 seasons, movie Adrienette has something that show Adrinette basically never did: a friendship. Movie Marinette talks to Adrien. She learns about his life. They hang out with their friends. She eventually works up the guts to ask him out! Her movie crush feels like more than a surface-level crush even though the scene that established the crush failed to give us that impression.

If movie Adrienette had more screen time, then it might actually have won this point, but its brief nature and the weakness of the setup make this one a win for the show. While the show has largely butchered Adrienette, the umbrella scene can’t be overlooked when comparing the core elements (setup, development, ending). It’s the scene that made me actually start shipping the square because, prior to that, Marinette’s crush felt like nothing special and you did wonder why Adrien won over Chat Noir. Without the umbrella scene or something similar, the movie makes that question stick around: story wise, why is Adrien winning here? He feels like a pretty generic crush.

Ladynoir

If we look at the same three elements (setup, development, ending), then show Ladynoir and movie Ladynoir don’t have all that much to differentiate them. Similar meeting, similar moment where Chat Noir falls in love, similar team bonding, similar romantic confession moment where Ladybug shoots him down for Adrien. The big thing that sets the movie apart and the reason why I’m giving it the point is the fact that the movie focuses on Ladynoir being partners. 

While the “better together” element is not well executed in terms of explaining what the heck it even means, it’s there and that’s something that the show has completely failed to give us. Outside of the yin-yang symbol and the fact that Creation and Destruction are clearly a pair, there’s nothing in the show to explain why Chat Noir needs to be there. In fact, one might even question why Fu handed out the ladybug and the black cat when those are the miraculouses that the villain wants and only the ladybug seems necessary to fix things. In the movie, that question is answered right from the start and that makes it the clear winner.

Identity Reveal

The show has had three of these, the movie had one. Since two of the show’s reveals lead to the end of the world and the third involved them not even knowing that it was an identity reveal, I feel like I have to give this to the movie. It’s the only one that’s fully satisfying for the audience.

If I was just comparing the movie and Oblivio, then I’d have a harder time calling it because I love Oblivio, but Ephemeral and Chat Blanc are such slaps in the face to ‘the power of love always so strong’ that the movie has to get the point.

Getting Together

This is tied to the identity reveal in the movie, but not in the show. In the show, we have the Chat Blanc moment, the Ephemeral moment, Oblivio, and Kwami’s Choice. Because I judged the first three of those in the previous section and because they got reset, I’ll be nice and compare the movie to Kwami’s Choice, which does deserve some praise.

While the overall message of that special was idiotic, the moment where Adrien figured out a way to get around Marinette’s talking issues was adorable. It’s the sort of stuff that I love to write for them. The movie didn’t give us that. The dance in the snow is adorable, Adrien crying makes you want to hug him, but it is a rather generic moment that could have happened between many couples. The hand thing? That's unique to their characters. It shows Marinette’s issues and Adrien’s kindness beautifully, so I’ll give this one to the show.

Romantic Tension

I needed a deciding item and this is the one that I’m going with! It’s something that the movie did well while the show doesn’t really have it, which is a big flaw for something that decided to randomly reverse the crushes. You see, if movie Ladybug suddenly fell for Chat Noir, then I’d buy it. When show Ladybug did it? It was blatantly obvious that it was just filler to add tension. I also didn't buy Adrien's flip, but let's not get into that!

As the story moves along, movie Ladybug is shown to care deeply for her partner through their developing (if confusing) "better together" message. Their song scene is adorable and romantic and it feels genuine. Show Ladynoir could never pull something like that off because Ladybug has always kept Chat Noir at arm's length due to the need to preserve the status quo so that a 2-season story could be drawn out to 6+ seasons.

There's a thin line between romance and friendship. Walking that line makes for a good story. The movie walks the line. The show runs away from it screaming because you can only walk a line for so long. Eventually, you have to pick a side. The story has to end. Draw out the tension too long, insert too much drama, and your audience will start to view your end-game couple as deeply unhealthy because you've done so much to keep them apart that the viewer has started to wonder if getting them together is actually the right call.

Final Thoughts

While the movie is far from perfect, its romance is going to feel far more genuine for established fans who wanted a well-paced romance for the love square. The show has done too much to drag things out and preserve the status quo, turning an adorable love story into an angst-fueled disaster.

As someone who loves seeing tragedy bring couples together, that’s a massive disappointment, so it’s nice to have the moments from the movie even if the movie didn’t do the work to earn the moments. And it didn't. It really didn't.

If you’re not already a Miraculous fan, then I would not recommend the movie as I don’t think that the romance (or really any element) will feel satisfying. While the show is flawed, it gives fans the setup they need so that they can watch the movie and insert the missing pieces that were needed to make the story work. Without the show, the movie falls apart because nothing is properly set up. And, yes, my Ladrien loving heart is sad that we didn't see any hero/civilian moments, but I'm not holding that against it. Movies are short and need to focus on the core elements of a story. Ladynoir and Adrinette are the core of the romance and the movie did both of them decently well.

This ship has been run into the ground. Both characters have been made worse people by being in love with each other. Marinette/Ladybug is not very far away from becoming a yandere over Adrien (she has stalked him and tried kissing what she thought was a stature of him) and Adrien/Chat Noir acts entitled to Ladybug's love. And the series still acts like they are meant for each other. Every character has to be a Adrienette shipper (both of their exes and Marinette's friends are, for example.) Characters not in favor of the ship are the villains. And their relationship has been stagnant for so long. After 5 seasons, Marinette still can't talk normally around her crush. The few times their superhero identities got revealed, the world ended and it had to be reversed. So their relationship can't even progress in any way.

I wanted to mention as a reminder.

I've said it before but I'll say it again: The Reverse Love Square isn't the Love Square restarting itself all over again.

Adrien has developed feelings over the entirety of the series, same with Ladybug developing feelings for Cat Noir overtime. They've been subtle, now season 5 is making them surface completely.

It's always been a showing vs telling, "actions speak louder than words" sort of thing. Adrien can say all he wants "she's just a friend!" but shows subtle signs of Marinette meaning so much more to him. Ladybug can say "I don't want to date Cat Noir!" all she wants, but will flirt with him from time to time and blush over certain things he does for her.

There's definitely going to be some Adrienette and Ladynoir development, which is great! We need that. I would be extremely tempted to rage quit watching the series if they made Cat Noir drop his feelings for Ladybug and Marinette drop her feelings for Adrien. There would be no point in all the previous Love Square development over the past four seasons if Thomas Astruc took that route.

Why MLB is slowly failing and how I would fix that

First of all I haven't seen much of the recent episodes, but I have seen plenty of shares of bs because I have been following it since airing.

Thomas loves to put labels on his fans when they give him criticism so now I am labeling him as the main culprit for the failure and hot garbage that his show is becoming.

The premise is gone, there isn't a singular idea that this show tries to show. I can't describe the newer seasons with one sentence. ( Or a lot for that matter)

The main premise of this show was that Marinette was an ordinary girl that had to fight between her two lives. Which would prevail was the main question.

Now it's just... Nothing. Thomas completely destroyed every single redeemable quality of this show because he is so overly emotionally invested that he became blind.

If I was writing it, I would still have a singular premise for every season first - hero Vs self, second self vs tribe, third - the breaking point, fourth - the redemption.

Marinette's growing obsession should have been addressed way earlier.

Adrienette and now LadyNoir have literally no personal boundaries, no respect, no understanding of each other. It's an idealised fantasy.

If it was me I would use Alya as foreshadowing that what Marinette is doing is not right. Then I would take a secondary character which would be unexpected like Juleka. She doesn't speak often so the audience would listen to her words better. Same for Marinette.

I would make Marinette question whether or not she actually likes Adrien or does she do all that because of lack of self and self-fulfilment.

I would make Marinette start more self reflecting even getting away from Adrien not only to build up the suspense but also make people believe that she is truly questioning and realising

Adrien desperately needs a suspenseful moment where he truly chooses who he wants to be and what is important for him.

I would make also him question who he is and what he wants. Does he want to still be a model? Is satisfying his overly strict father satisfying him.

I would make Adrien run away from his home to get more freedom, not only physical but of thought. He literally has a beat friend with a good home - easiest way to build a suspense and to make such a decision more meaningful

My god THEY ARE LITERALLY ALL TEENAGERS, make them act like it. They act like 12 y.o children. Make Adrien try to oppose his father, to actually have option of his own wants, dreams of his own. Personality even.

Chloe had the amazing opportunity to defy stereotypes BUT THOMAS IS TOO FAR IN HIS OWN PRIDE TO ADMIT HIS WRITING ISN'T ON PAR ANYMORE

I wouls make her father have a new lover so Chloe could feel left out and maybe try to do some bad things to his new lover but ending up in guilt and rethinking whether or not all that bs with tricks and manipulating is even worth it.

What does Chloe like, what does she want to pursue, what are her passions? I would make Chloe realise that she is really insecure and secretly want to be more like Marinette - with stable family, hobbies and friends who she doesn't force to be with her.

And probably make her redemption visible through her hobbies - wanting to be a biker or helping people, a gardener or anything showing an ounce of personality really.

This obviously is not all I would do but I think the post would be too long to read. Thomas is a bad writer and it shows through his one dimensional portrayal of those characters
