FINISHED WORK?? on MY page??? it's far less likely than you'd think. and yet, somehow, here we are. :D
(well, finished enough to post and call "done", i should say. i may yet meddle with some details when i inevitably notice ten more flaws immediately after posting :D)
good old moss knight, such a devout follower of big slug. surely no wandering knight would ever end such a noble creature's life before he had the chance to speak with a certain fellow at a nearby bench! :D
this was essentially just me testing the waters with digital after some time avoiding it, and especially colours/lighting. it's been a while since i actually tried to make something fully fleshed out like this. i don't know, i feel like it could have come out worse :)

Foreshadowing
Tumblr media
haha get it he probably died so his final resting place is the resting grou-
The foreshadowing throughout Quirrel's dialogue is so perfectly done that I just have to talk about it. (Below the cut. This is a long one.)
As seen in the above image and below quote, an instance of such foreshadowing.
"The city looks to be built into an enormous cavern, and the rain pours down from cracks in the stone above.
There must be a lot of water up there somewhere. I suppose, if the cave roof stayed strong this long, it should hold for us.
Before I leave this Kingdom, I'd like to see where all that water comes from. What a sight it must be!"
As we know, the rain comes from Blue Lake. And I must agree, what a sight it is!
Tumblr media
Circled location is Quirrel
It is also proved by a quote I obtained [here], where Ari Gibson himself states:
"The only area that I can think of that exists purely for narrative reasons is the Blue Lake, which is above the raining city. And it's only there because there's all this rain falling on the city, and I just couldn't bear the idea that we didn't explain where this rain was coming from. So we put this big lake above it."
Quirrel's final location he is seen at is Blue Lake, without Monomon's mask atop his head, sat down on the ground and gazing out over the gorgeous lake.
The final location before his implied death, his second and final departure of hallownest, fulfilling his wish to see the source of the rain before he leaves.
Tumblr media
"To persevere in this ruin, that old nail alone just won't be enough. Though that's no problem! One only has to look around.
Plenty have come before us and most have met their grisly end, many more equipped than you and I.
I'm sure they wouldn't mind were a fellow explorer to relieve them of their tools. It's a kindness really. The dead shouldn't be burdened with such things."
Tumblr media
Quirrel's death (although uncertain if he truly died as stated by one of the devs themselves, saying "we don't know," but that is a topic for another time), or rather, his nail in the ground, is foreshadowed by the above dialogue.
Quirrel believes that a weapon is a burden to oneself when dead, encouraging the Knight to pick up a stronger weapon they may find.
Upon the re-entry of Blue Lake after the Knight has spoken to Quirrel, they will discover that he seems to have left the area, the remaining evidence of his existence there being his nail, which looks intentionally stuck into the ground, tempting one to grab it and use it to its fullest potential. After all, Quirrel would not want to be burdened by his own weapon much like past explorers have been. Whether he drowned himself, withered away of old age, or had been killed by enemies, it must have been intentional due to his nail's placement.
Free from the burdens of his weapon. Of surviving. Of life. He had lived life to the fullest and had seen all that the world has offered him, his mind freed from the awful events in between.
"All tragedy erased. I see only wonders..."
That is not the end, by the way. Although it is the perfect quote to end on, I still have the random tidbits of info he remembers to cover.
Tumblr media
"What is this feeling?... So familiar. Drawn forward yet repelled.
And those shapes upon the door...To gaze directly at them turns my mind to fog."
Tumblr media
"That lake... a revered presence once slept deep within...
Did it? What would make me think such things?"
Tumblr media
"There is a city nearby, the old capital of Hallownest. I've heard a Nailsmith resides there. Seek the old bug out and you may find progress that much easier."
"...Who was it that told me of the Nailsmith? I can't even remember, yet I can almost picture the smith himself..."
For someone who is exploring Hallownest along a similar path to your own journey, he seems to know some pieces of knowledge in regards to the kingdom, whether he tells the Knight of the nailsmith, or the thought of Unn being locked within his mind.
The Knight later discovers that Quirrel has been in Hallownest before, although his memory of the place is mostly blank.
Tumblr media
"Did she call you too then? I realise it's no coincidence we arrive together.
Though much of my memory is blank, this place I recall."
Quirrel had taken part in the Teacher's sacrifice to become a seal upon the Black Egg Temple, although he cannot recall the event, thus showing he has lived in Hallownest once, but remembers nothing but small fragments of information, the tragedy of the infection blocked from his memory upon departure.
"Twice I've seen this world and though my service may have stripped the first experience from me, I'm thankful I could witness its beauty again."
ok NOW I will end with the line.
"To live an age, yet remember so little... Perhaps I should be thankful?
All tragedy erased. I see only wonders..."
Tumblr media
Ah, foreshadowing. A beautiful thing.

A Journey through Hallownest: Choice Bits from the Wanderer's Journal (pt. 1)
As promised, I recently retrieved my copy of the Wanderer's Journal (the official Hallownest artbook/guidebook) and wanted to post some pictures of my favorite things from it. To start us off, here's the front page and the author, a cute little ladybug called Ellina.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up will be the observations of the Forgotten Crossroads, which does include the end page as Ellina loops around to leave Hallownest (for reference, her visit is timed around the same as Ghost's journey)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I find it interesting that fossilized/petrified remains are apparently extremely common all over Hallownest, to the point where they're just used freely as the city's currency (geo is just little fossils). It's almost as if the whole of the caverns were under one vast sea at a point in the distant past...gee, wonder what that could be??
The Soul Totems are heavily implied to be relics of the ancient Void Civilization here (which I doubt anyone is surprised by, given the similarities in shape to the Shade Lord and the fact that void and soul are compatable, while void and essence are not, ruling out Radi's influence), while the Gruzzer was just thrown in here because I love how there's little biology tidbits thrown in for the wild enemies here (mawleks are theorized to share an ancient ancestor to goams in their entry). As for including the last page with Dirtmouth, I was just really touched by the fact that Hallownest seems to have a hope of rebuilding- perhaps not as it once was, but simply as a home for those who survived the Radiance's wrath.
Next is the Fungal Wastes and Lake of Unn:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact that Unn is said to be a great guardian spirit rather than a god intrigues me, though to be fair, the Pale King and White Lady are not referred to as gods either, perhaps due to the author's bias (we are viewing the world through the eyes of a nonnative wanderer, after all). As for the bits on the Fungal Wastes, I found it interesting that they were apparently once allied with Hallownest- I didn't know that! It makes sense though, as they would have benefited greatly from feeding off the waste runoff that a great city of bugs once produced. Mushrooms are detritovores, after all, so any bodies, food waste, or dung cast off by the Waterways would have made for an easy meal, and perhaps contributed to the expansion of the Wastes after the City of Tears was established.
Tumblr limits me to ten pictures per post, so I'm going to have to split this one into parts. You can find the other parts here, once I upload the rest of the parts:
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

city of tears headcanons
what it says on the tin.
The city was actually built with the rain in mind, the design perplexed a lot of the bugs who were first building it, but the kings foresight pulled through in the end and built a city that could withstand millennia of rain.
Speaking of rain, the rain falling from the blue lake above was actually initially more of a flood/heavier rain, the citizens however liked the mood it created so much that they eventually used magic to perpetuate the downpour while reducing it to a more manageable flow.
The city is much, much larger than we see in cannon, and had a very diverse mix of bugs due to being the capital of hallownest(which is a trade kingdom roughly in the middle of the wyrm wastes).
Places of note:
Buzzers: a quaint little dive bar on lower west side of the city. It’s run by an old bald faced hornet who gives the restaurant its name. This bar mainly caters to the predatory bugs of Hallownest but all bugs are welcome. This place is famous for its hemolymph wine and exquisite(read greasy as hell) gruzzer steaks.
The Confluece of Waters: a massive concert hall in the east side of the city, this is the place where all of the waterways of the city meet up. The walls of this building are actually just made up of waterfalls and channels, it’s a truly impressive feat of engineering. Despite the omnipresent sound of water the acoustics inside the building itself are actually fantastic.
Hegemols school for young knights: this academy is the main location where future knights and members of the Hallownest military are trained. It’s nominally overseen by Hegemol, who scouts upcoming knights to present to the king, however his duties mean it’s largely run by the educators present. It’s located at the edge of the western part of the city. Bugs of all walks of life can apply here, and many see it as a way to move up in station.
Chauncey’s: A shop belonging to an orb weaver spider named Chauncey, they’re not from deepnest, or even the regions surrounding Hallownest. They moved to the city with hopes of becoming the best known tailor in the kingdom, success however hasn’t been forthcoming. The prejudices of the bugs of hallownest have made business tough for them. However the king himself recently commissioned works from them in something of a scandal.
The embassy of Unn: This building is located on the Easter half of the city and is where Isma reports back to Unn with news regarding the pale court. The building itself was grown over the course of many seasons and the walls are entirely made of living plant matter. It also serves as a temple/church to Unn for those in the city who worship her.

how is unn doing in your au
She's doing fine. Her Mosskin are back to their senses now that the infection is gone, even though their numbers are low. She returned from her hiding and can now be found in the Lake of Unn, which means any traveler can approach her provided they weren't deemed a threat by the Mossknights. She offers guidance and teaches about the importance of balance in nature, I especially like the idea of FPK visiting her and paying close attention to her teachings; he frequently hunts in Greenpath, and considering his large appetite, he would want to make sure he doesn't overhunt or damage the ecosystem in other ways. So they are on friendly terms, I'd say - Unn has always been a very peaceful godly being, and considering FPK has no powers anymore, she wouldn't see him as a serious threat either, as long as he doesn't pose a threat to Greenpath itself.
WL's presence in Queen's Gardens is a bit of an inconvenience for Unn, especially with the tension between the Mantis Traitors who now serve her and Unn's Mosskin, which is especially felt at the borders. WL is satisfied with her current territory and doesn't seem to wish to expand it, but the Mantis Traitors are clearly itching for a fight, and the Mosskin see them as hostile intruders, so it could get ugly.
Unn herself tries to remain on peaceful terms with WL, a sentiment that is shared by the latter, though it's very clear that there is a power imbalance between the two - if WL regains all her powers and decides to expand her Gardens, Unn wouldn't have the strength to defend her land, she's not as powerful as WL in her prime, and her Mosskin are very weakened.
For now though, they maintain peace. WL warns her Mantis Traitors (who are now her court and protectors, so maybe I should think of a new name for them haha) not to cause trouble at the borders, though it's likely a matter of time before something happens. Whether it escalates into a full on conflict depends solely on WL and Unn, and with the former's desire to spread her roots and breed, which I interpret as something more like what plants do as opposed to wanting actual children, there's a hint of uncertainty in the air.
