Summary: A misunderstanding during a life and death situation leads to another life and death situation, leaving both Wei Ying and Lan Zhan struggling. Family is important. The Lans, Nies, Wens and Jiang siblings step in to make things right. Wei Ying learns that he is not alone.

Kay's comments: Whew, wow, this story! What a punch in the heart it is. The angst is heavy with this one. Basically, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were both in a car accident together. There car crashed on a bridge and Lan Wangji fell into the ice-cold water. Wei Wuxian jumped after him and saved him, but following this - he gets arrested! And no medical attention! ACAB (except Nie Mingjue in this story). Thankfully, he does get saved eventually and put into the hospital as well and that's where a large portion of this story plays, the focus switching between mostly Lan Xichen, Lan Qiren, Nie Mingjue and Wen Qing as they get behind what caused the accident and as they watch the boys fight for their live. Despite the Jiangs being mentioned in the summary, they're not really part of this story so far. Wei Wuxian had been living with the Lans after Madam Yu kicked him out when he was younger. This story is so well-written and the tension is marvelous. I really enjoyed the different point of views and how confused it all felt in the beginning, as the characters were confused themselves. No one had a complete picture of what happened and the revealations come slowly and devastatingly. Just wow. What a story. Now I know, that this story is still a WIP and that many shy away from WIPs, but I believe you should still read. It's just so good.

Excerpt: Wangji cannot be consoled. His face is buried in Uncle’s chest and he sobs for Wuxian until the doctor decides it’s too much stress for him right now and sedates him. As soon as they settle him back in bed, Uncle turns to him. “Xichen…Wuxian…” He chokes back what he is about to say and swallows thickly, and Xichen finds himself copying the action. What Wangji said leaves them with more questions than answers. Wei Wuxian was in the car with him. That’s about all Wangji can recall that is a firm, solid memory. The rest of his explanation comes in pieces. There’s a phone call. Them getting in the car together. An assignment. A coffee shop. Wuxian asking him to buckle up…there is no sequence, nothing that connects the dots, nothing that tells them what actually happened. Nothing that makes any actual sense, but he is distraught because he knows that if Wei Ying was with him in the car, then he should be here with him in the hospital, unless something else had happened to him.

Very… very angsty thoughts of the day. Very angsty and whumpy. With that said, TW for: blood, helplessness, near character death, hallucinations

Thinking during the SSC wwx would sometimes get hurt, whether it’s because of using the tiger tally or maybe someone attacked him from behind, and once they’d retreated back to the tents they were staying, lwj would just… help heal him?

Wei Wuxian sits on his cot in his tent, tending to his own wounds like he always did ever since he was young. At this point it was the force of habit, get hurt, take care of it himself. What he didn’t count on this time is that Lan Zhan noticed. He always noticed, cause despite them arguing, fighting, despite how overwhelmed Lan Zhan got, he always had his eyes on Wei Wuxian.

That night was particularly cold, no matter how many layers or how many talismans he placed around, it was just that cold. The sound of the flaps of his tent opening is what caught his attention, and there he was, Lan Zhan, uncharacteristically, letting himself in with bandages and medicinal herbs in hands. Once he steps in, he just sees a very, very tired and bloodied Wei Wuxian. The grime from the war smeared on his face, clouding his handsome features. Though, it’s not enough to cover Wei Wuxian’s surprise to see Lan Zhan in his tent.

“Lan Zhan? What are you doing here?”

There’s silence between them and it stretched for what it felt for eternity. Lan Zhan looks down at the items in his hands, and then back at him. “Tending the wounded.”

At that moment, Wei Wuxian can’t help but scoff a chuckle under his breath, “I’m not wounded, I’m fine. There are other people who are in dire need of your assistance.”

Lan Zhan’s brows furrow with worry and frustration. Why is Wei Wuxian doing this? He knows what he saw, Lan Zhan saw a shower of arrows directed specifically towards him. He had strummed his guqin just in time but two arrows still managed to land on his back.

“It is not wise to neglect your injuries. Whether they are big or small, one’s body needs to be replenished and taken care of.” Lan Zhan presses on, taking a step closer towards the other.

“Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian says his name with ice, “You really think of me as a frail thing that needs constant supervision?”

Wei Wuxian stands from his cot, grabbing his dizi as he does. Though, he only takes one step before he comes crashing down to the ground.

“Wei Ying!” Lan Zhan calls, quickly stepping closer to grab the other’s arm. He helps him back to his cot, “Let me help.”

The insistence dissolves Wei Wuxian’s walls. With a defeated sigh he nods at the other and begins to slowly shrug his robes off. He’s too tired to fight, too tired to push him away. So the two stay silent while Lan Zhan works to tend his wounds.

“I’m fine, you know?” He mumbles, breaking the silence. “You really should be putting these supplies to better use, for the people that need them the most.” A hiss slips without warning when Lan Zhan swipes clean the wound left by the arrow.

“Your wounds are not healing properly.” It’s all Lan Zhan says, and Wei Wuxian is glad because he knows he doesn’t have the energy to fight Lan Zhan about how his new cultivation is affecting his nonexistent golden core. From the corner of his eye he can make out Lan Zhan’s hands moving efficiently, threading a sterilized needle. “Breathe.” Lan Zhan instructs before letting the needle sink into his skin. They stay like that for the time Lan Zhan puts in taking care of all the wounds he got during the fight.

“Thank you…” he mumbles after a long while, “But you don’t have to keep an eye on me. Today was a slip up. It won’t happen again.”

His breath hitched while he laid on the floor, doing his best to keep his head leveled and the panic at bay. He knew blood slowly seeped through his fingers, but he couldn’t move. He was bleeding out… after today’s battle he had limped towards his tent. He didn’t think it was that bad, it was just a scratch, he thought, no one had been able to get so close with his army of corpses… yet, once the adrenaline left his body he came crashing to the floor. Wei Wuxian couldn’t move, his body refusing to listen to his commands, so the only thing he could do was to try his best to stop the bleeding but his hands were so shaky, so weak. Time ceased to exist, he doesn’t really know how much time it has gone by.

Wei Wuxian has to try. His voice is so frail as he calls for anyone to help him. Anyone would do, as long as they find him.

“Shijie… shijie—“ he whispers before choking on his own blood. Maybe.. maybe if he raises his voice, he heard his voice earlier. Maybe he was still around. Maybe… Gods, it hurts to breathe. “L-Lan Zhan… Lan Zhan…!”

Consciousness slipped quickly from him. It hurts so much to breathe. And all he could think about is how scared he was. ‘I don’t want to die. I don’t want to be alone. I’m scared…’

“It's okay, A-Ying. It’s gonna be okay.”

His eyes widen at the silky, yet comforting voice. That voice… It was so distantly familiar. With difficulty, he turns his head and he gasps softly when he sees a woman and a man kneeling next to him. The man had his very own eyes, and the woman reflected his own smile, a red ribbon tied on her hair like his.

“A-Niang..? A-Die…?” He tries, the words feeling foreign in his mouth. They come out in a whisper, but even then it takes so much energy out of him.

His mother hushes him, fingers gently brushing his hair. “My A-Ying… My sweet, brave A-Ying. You’ve been so brave and strong. I couldn’t be more proud.”

“I’m scared… It hurts.” He whimpers, hot tears spilling down his cheeks and getting lost in his hair. Wei Wuxian tries to reach for her hand but falls with a quiet thud next to him. Inches away from his parents. He wants to touch them, he wants to be held by them. For once, he wants to be held…

“We’re here, baobei. It’ll be over soon.” His father said with a sad smile. “Forgive your a-die, I couldn’t protect you… I couldn’t take you away… Your A-die is sorry that Jiang Fengmian let you suffer.”

“I’m scared… I’m scared. I-I don’t wanna die.”

“A-Ying has done enough. Rest, my child. Everything will be alright.” His mother whispered, leaning down and pressing a loving kiss to his forehead. It felt so real, maybe they really were here. “Rest. Close your eyes. A-Niang and A-Die are here.”

He doesn’t want to close his eyes, not when his parents were right in front of him. He missed them so much, he had so many things to tell them. Tired eyes flutter close, a tear sliding down his face. Maybe… maybe he can let himself rest. The war is almost over, the sects don’t need him anymore, right? He can only hope… that his shijie or Jiang Cheng are not the ones to check on him. He wouldn’t want them to find him like this… The thought of his shijie crying… no, she’ll be fine. Jiang Cheng will protect her, and he’ll always be close, his spiritual energy thrums through Jiang Cheng’s meridians. So, he’ll always be with them.

He’s done enough…

At least the pain eases out, the floor doesn’t seem so hard. His mother is holding his hand so tightly. Wei Wuxian wants to pry his eyes open, he wants to see her again. Compared to when he was thrown to the Burial Mounds, at least he felt warm.

“…Wei Ying—!”

He’s too tired to respond, too tired to bother and find out who is calling his name. Whoever it is should respect what his mother asked, she wants him to rest. It’s not like they can stop him from sleeping, Wei Wuxian had always been a heavy sleeper. Just let him rest…

“…wake up— Wei Ying, wake up!” The voice above him nearly screamed with despair. That same warmth envelopes him closer. It was comforting to say the least. Gentle, yet firm fingers press against his wound on his side. “Stay. Stay…”

“A-Niang… Wants A-Ying to rest…” Wei Wuxian mumbles, and he feels himself sinking deeper into the black void until he’s suddenly pulled back. He choked in a scream, pain flaring from his side.

“I’m sorry, Wei Ying. I need to stop the bleeding…” That voice… Wei Wuxian opens his eyes, even if his vision is blurry he can still make the Second Jade of Lan above him who had been cradling him in his arms.

“L-Lan Zhan…?”

“Do not speak. Focus.” Lan Zhan urged, voice strained as he kept sharing his own spiritual energy to help close the wound. “I’m here…”

He lets himself fall limp in Lan Zhan’s hold. He’ll deal with the aftermath and the yelling later. Wei Wuxian can’t help but lean closer to Lan Zhan, letting the warmth comfort him. Maybe he wasn’t as alone as he thought he was. He’ll make sure to thank him, once he’s well rested. He at least wants his parents to know he’s resting in good hands.

Day: 5 - STEALING THE BREATH FROM MY LUNGS (GIVE IT BACK)

Prompt: Wheezing / Light-headed / "I'll count, you just breathe."

Fandom: MDZS

Characters: Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen, Backround/Mentioned: Lan Sizhui and Wei Wuxian

“Wangji…” Lan Xichen starts, trying to reason with his younger brother.

Who was once again kneeling by a closed door, desperately waiting for it to open once again for the people inside to let him in.

Even all these years it’s still a painful sight to see, and even more painful to remember. Lan Wangji’s grief and desperation, his own grief and sadness, all far too overwhelming for two young children. But no one around could- no, would help them. The only one who was willing and happy to guide them was gone.

“...” As expected he got silence in return, but he can tell now that his brother’s word may fail him, his eyes don’t.

Those eyes are glassy and far away. So he does what he can as he holds over the umbrella he had over them both.

“…Let’s go inside, hm?” He tries to coax, it was raining instead of snowing but that's to be expected in Lotus pier, where the weather was much warmer than that of Gusu.

“Wangji… They’ll be ok…” He tries to reassure but it falls on seemingly deaf ears.

He can't even imagine what's going through his didi’s head right now, not only was his husband hurt, he couldn't even see him and the scene was far too similar to the one from their childhood.

It all happened so fast. At least that’s what was reported, Wei Ying and A-Yuan got hurt.

And he wasn’t there to help them.

“Move! get out the way!”

“I'm sorry, Hanguang Jun but you can't enter while the Jiang healers are in there…”

“They’ll be fine. He’s survived worse and you’ve both raised a tough kid.”

The long engraved need to follow the rules, to keep his composure wars with the anxiety, fear, and dread he feels at this moment.

So he kneels, out in the harsh rain of lotus pier, slightly off to the side from the Jiang sect's healing ward. His brother tries to coax him out of the rain, but he can't hear very well, actually he can’t do anything much more than fixate on the fate of those in the medical ward.

It’s getting harder to think, to breathe. He suddenly feels cold and lightheaded… and his vision starts to swim with dark spots.

Then someone’s (his brother?) is in front of him and there’s hands gripping at his shoulders.

“-ngji?...Snap…it- Breathe!” Is being yelled at him.

Breathe…? Isn’t he breathing? He has to be, why wouldn’t he be… Oh.

He isn’t breathing.

He tries but all he can manage is a wheezing breath, he blinks and his sight fogs over with tears.

“G-ge…?” He manages while struggling for breath.

“Wangji, Didi, it’s alright, you’re alright. Just breathe, ok? Just-” Was the frantic response, he feels himself shift and soon he’s leaning against his brother.

“C-can’t…” He gasps for breath but it ends in a choked wheeze.

“Ah, follow my breathing, hm?”

He feels his brother’s chest rise with a steady breath in and fall with one out. He tries to follow through but his attempts end in staggering wheezes. He feels more dark spots dance in his vision and he, embarrassingly slumps and clings to his brother.

“G-ge…g-ge, can’t. W-wei Yi- Shinz- Shu-” A gasps interrupts his desperate and panicked babbling then he continues on again.

He feels the tears fall as he calls out to the people who he cares for the most.

“Shh… A-zhan, A-zhan. Just breathe.” His brother states firmly, taking his wrists in a firm hold and pulling him in closer to the solid embrace, “I’ll count, just breathe.”

“In for One… Two… Three…” His brother starts, and he tries another breath in.

It was still hard but the solid presence helps, the calming voice and the counting helps. Thankfully after a few rounds of the breathing exercise, his own breathe steadies. But that doesn’t do much for the emotional exhaustion and anxiety he still felt, so he allows himself a moment of vulnerability.

He openly weeps in his brother’s arms, concern for his husband and their child too great to bear. Once he’s truly exhausted himself he slumps fully in the solid hold.

Now they were both soaked and kneeling in a Jiang sect courtyard. He lets out a quiet hum, an apology and thanks to his brother.

He can feel them behind him, hear the snarling, the wet froth of their mouths full of saliva as they snap at his calves while he runs.

They'd already bitten him once, tearing through his flesh and drawing blood even through the material of his pants, the rest of their vicious bites pulling at his robes and leaving parts of the fabric in ribbons flowing behind him like the tails of a kite.

He was out of breath, he didn't know how long he'd been running just that he'd long left behind the group of captive disciples, he'd heard Lan Zhan yell out his name as Wen Chao counted down but he couldn't stop, couldn't waste any of his head start. Not that Wen Chao had played fairly.

"You'll have ten seconds to run before I release the dogs, we can't have this over with too quickly, can we." He sneers down at Wei Wuxian where he's braced on his knees, a solid blow to his face had left him reeling.

"They're very well trained, the best war dogs money could buy, a gift from my father." He smirks, and Wei Wuxian's stomach drops, he wasn't bluffing, they were setting up camp and delaying finding the monster just for this? How far would Wen Chao go to feel he had regained the upper hand, yes Wei Wuxian had humiliated him but this is just-

"Nothing to say? After your reaction to my pet when we threw you into that cell, I knew this would be perfect for you, don't you want to meet them?" Wei Wuxian swallows hard, hands trembling in the dirt below him, the anticipation is starting to get to him and he can see the other disciples shifting uncomfortably where they've been corralled of to the side.

Wen Chao barks out a command and gestures with his hand, a piercing pain erupting in Wei Wuxian's leg seconds later, he screams when he sees the dog so silent that he hadn't even heard it's approach. He kicks out at the dogs face and chest with his other leg, but it only serves to cause the dog to clamp down harder, shaking it's head as it drags him a few meters along the ground. It's a beast of a dog, a hulking mass of muscle and fur that would probably reach up to Wei Wuxian's waist, if he were able to stand.

With a whistle and likely another gesture the dog releases him and moves to sit beside Wen Chao, licking it's chops as it watches him intently, Wei Wuxian scrambles backwards on elbows and heels until he hits the legs of a guard behind him.

"Like I said, perfect for you." Wen Chao is definitely smiling now, taking pleasure in the terror plain across his face, the bastard.

At a nod Wei Wuxian is yanked to his feet by the guard, at a snap of his fingers more dogs are brought over to stand behind Wen Chao, hands on their collars awaiting the command to release them.

Summary: Wei Wuxian gets sent home after the fight with Jin Zixuan. Jiang Cheng is right to have worried. Kay's comments: Sometimes. You just read Wei Wuxian getting put through a meat grinder named Yu Ziyuan, because he's your beloved blorbo. In this story, he gets punished by Madam Yu after he punched Jin Zixuan, luckily the Jiang siblings are there for him and get him to safety. Featuring some minor Sangcheng, the Nie brothers being awesome, the Cloud Recesses being a safe haven for Wei Wuxian and the most tender hurt/comfort post-study arc Wangxian interactions. Excerpt: Jiang Cheng knows he has to leave for Cloud Recesses. He has no idea when his mother will be returning but he knows he has to get himself and his brother out before then. Wei Wuxian’s condition hasn’t gotten better though it has not gotten significantly worse either. He had yet to regain consciousness. During the past few nights, Wei Wuxian tosses and turns restlessly from nightmares on top of the fever, crying out names in his sleep. Most of the time, it’s their sister’s, sometimes it’s Jiang Cheng’s, and other times even Lan Wangji’s name. During the day, he continues to plan how to get to Cloud Recesses, despite his exhaustion from the restless nights he had looking after his brother. Jiang Cheng, being fearful of something terrible happening hadn’t returned to his own bedroom to sleep. In fact, he had barely been sleeping at all, jerking awake every time he no longer heard his brother’s breathing. He only manages to get some rest after Jiang Xing and his assistants assured him that they will wake him up if anything happened.

My first rant, and the reason I snapped and made this blog, is not about Jiang Cheng. It's actually about the characters around him.

See, I was reading this fic and, without naming any specifics, I was enjoying it. Nothing especially groundbreaking, but it was good enough that I was immersed. In fact, the thing that probably got me about this is that what I liked most about the fic, what was really sucked me in, was the characterisations. Wei Wuxian was the definite standout. Fic premise meant that he was injured, but he was being portrayed with his canonical resilience, which is rare enough that prior to this, I would have likely celebrated the fic for it's accuracy. It's a difficult thing to pull off, and I always give extra credit to authors who can walk the line of, essentially, whumping a character while still keeping them themselves.

Then it happened. Jiang Cheng showed up. I've sometimes clicked out of a fic just for that (the timing of his appearance is, occasionally, enough of an indicator of his role in the story that I know I'm not going to be able to jive with it), but I was immersed! And the author had gained my trust with the aforementioned character accuracy until that point! I was caught up, and ready to roll with whatever version of Jiang Cheng came out.

And, well, his behaviour seemed somewhat accurate to canon. Angry, accusatory, sort of irrational, in an overly suspicious way. Seemed pretty good. Again, the timing made me think that the fic was probably going to go the reconciliation path, but you know, I can get through that. I don't care enough about Jiang Cheng that his presence or absence alone is enough to ruin a fic I'm otherwise enjoying.

But then, imagine my shock. Jiang Cheng, post first siege (where, as far as everyone knows, he killed Wei Wuxian, and has spent the years since his death hunting down and torturing anyone who might be/reminds him of him. You can dispute Jiang Cheng's actions, if you wish, but not that this is how he is widely perceived), demands to see Wei Wuxian. And Lan Wangji, who loves Wei Wuxian, who spent stars knows how much time desperately trying to protect Wei Wuxian, who would stand between Wei Wuxian and the world if he had been allowed, just... agrees.

Lan Wangji. Agreed. To let a Jiang Cheng, who shows no, I don't know, remorse, or concern, or anything, toward a person he is credited with murdering, that Lan Wangji believes he murdered. And Lan Wangji just... yep. I'll just take you to see Wei Wuxian. Sure, he's injured, and vulnerable, and you show no sign of wanting to do anything other than a violence. Yep, right this way.

And THIS. THIS is why Jiang Cheng infuriates me. This is why I had to make this blog. Because I don't care about Jiang Cheng, love him, hate him, think he's the most evil scum imaginable, think he's the true victim of mdzs, I literally don't care. I don't have enough investment in the character to give a fuck about how accurate he is.

But I love Lan Wangji. I really do (and Wei Wuxian, and Wen Ning, and Wen Qing, and Jin Ling, and every other character even peripherally related to Jiang Cheng). So to see the characters I do care about being warped and twisted, just to try and force a particular narrative to play out about this one character? I've spent the past idk two hours as I set this up frothing with rage.

It's not like he's the main character of this fic. He's one of the last ones listed (after characters that are actually deceased throughout the entirety of the fic), and there's no, idk, Yunmeng siblings or reconciliation tag or anything. Full confession, I haven't finished the fic, but I'm well over halfway through, so I can somewhat confidently say that his presence, while maybe playing into something in the endgame, is not super critical.

And yet. The author, who until that point had been pretty good with their characterisations, felt the need to overlook one of the main characters primary personality traits (Lan Wangji's desire to protect people and keep safe that which he loves) in order to... make it slightly easier for Jiang Cheng to be shoehorned into the plot? Why? Just... why?

I'm frustrated. Frustrated, and confused. Is it lack of imagination? Could the author not think of a single other way Jiang Cheng might come into contact with Wei Wuxian after the first siege (assuming, of course, that he is alive)? I don't believe that, the author did well enough with thinking up some left field plot points at other stages of the fic. Did they overlook the fact that, Jiang Cheng having demanded Lan Wangji take him to Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji could have just... not done that? Lan Wangji, Mr. You Are Not Qualified To Talk To Me, had no choice but to acquiesce to Jiang Cheng's will. He couldn't have just. refused. Or walked away from the conversation. Knocked him out and left. Or called out the inherent contradiction of Jiang Cheng wanting to visit someone he killed (again, regardless of your opinion on Jiang Cheng's culpability, it is made clear in canon that that is the version of events Lan Wangji knows/believes). Or at the very least placed conditions on Jiang Cheng that he's not allowed to do anything to harm Wei Wuxian.

But nope! In the space of a single scene, just by his very presence, apparently, Jiang Cheng is able to turn a fully fledged, well characterised version of Lan Wangji into a robot that cannot disobey a human's will due to it's programming.

And it may seem like I'm ragging on this poor author, or that I'm getting too worked up over one scene, and, and, yeah, that would... that would be correct (hence I'm trying to avoid saying anything identifying about the fic, though I realise that might lessen the impact of my arguments). But the thing is, it's not just this fic. Or just this author.

It's everywhere.

I cannot count the number of fics that have characters that otherwise align pretty well with their canonical selves, only for all that to go out the window the second Jiang Cheng shows up. It's like people can't help themselves. Jiang Cheng appears, and every other character must suddenly become whatever version of themselves makes Jiang Cheng appear most sympathetic/reasonable/well-intentioned. Whatever helps the author make Jiang Cheng be what they want him to be.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji definitely get this the worst. Wei Wuxian goes from an intelligent, calculating individual, who excels at reading the situations he's in and figuring out what's going to get him the outcome he wants*, to a reckless idiot who charges in without thinking because he wants to "be a hero". And Lan Wangji goes from someone who has repeatedly failed to save the ones he loves, and so is appropriately determined to protect them as much as he can (without becoming his father), to someone who thinks he always knows best**, and will happily put someone he loves into a potentially deadly situation because... I don't know. His thinking is pretty much never clearly explained, but I've seen different half-reasons. Sometimes Lan Wangji just thinks that Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are such good, good brothers, and that Jiang Cheng is so important to Wei Wuxian that the chance to hold a conversation with him is worth Wei Wuxian... best case scenario, being verbally abused, worst case, being tortured to death. Sometimes he thinks he wouldn't be able to stop Jiang Cheng which... haha. Even Jin Ling, who reflexively defends Jiang Cheng over everything, thinks that Jiang Cheng doesn't stand a chance against Lan Wangji. Sometimes he thinks he shouldn't interfere with someone else's family... even though they aren't related, and Jiang Cheng cannot, under any circumstances, acknowledge Wei Wuxian as anything other than a disciple/servant. Also, Lan Wangji gets involved in everything. That's kind of his thing. You know... going where the chaos is? There's certainly a lot of chaos whenever Jiang Cheng is around...

But really, it's everyone. Wen Ning goes from being so defensive of Wei Wuxian that he breaks a promise and reveals a secret he kept for nearly twenty years just to get Jiang Cheng to stop talking shit, to usually being passively pushed into the back seat, his bond with Wei Wuxian glossed over in favour of the "brothers"***. Wen Qing, a person so devoted to Wei Wuxian that she sacrificed herself and her beloved brother on the off chance that it would mean he wouldn't have to face consequences for Jin Zixuan's death, is suddenly chastising Wei Wuxian for not doing more to smooth over their relationship. Jin Ling goes from creating a diversion so that he can help Wei Wuxian escape Jiang Cheng, despite knowing he would get in trouble for it, to trying to trick them into being in the same room. It's everyone.

Every. Single. Character. Must be changed, must behave in ways antithetical to their personalities and relationships, because it seems that's the only way many people can reconcile with their affection for a character that behaves the way Jiang Cheng does. In order to keep Jiang Cheng even slightly resembling his canonical self (angry. violent. verbally abusive at every possible opportunity), and yet still have him be welcomed and beloved by the other characters, every other character must lose integral parts of themselves. Mo Dao Zu Shi is, in many ways, a surprisingly tightly woven story when you start pulling threads, and if you want that jumper to work like pants, you need to get the scissors and start cutting.

Or at least, I can only assume that's what's happening. I can't fathom any other reason as to why so many fics, that are otherwise fairly true to character, veer so wildly OOC as soon as he appears. And it is so, so many fics. Note: I've read, ballpark, around two thousand mo dao zu shi fics (yes, I have no life. no, why do you ask?), and this happens in a staggering amount of them.

And basically, this is the root of my issue with Jiang Cheng. I don't care how you write him, he can be the most loving, soft, compassionate individual in the world in your fic, it's your fic, you write what you like****, I'm just going to engage less with those parts, because I don't care as much. You can make him greet each sunrise by weeping, and coo over every baby he encounters on the street, and weave blankets for the homeless in his free time. I literally don't care.

What I care about is the changes made to the other characters. That in order to raise Jiang Cheng, other characters must be dragged down. That he must be there, and he must be the secretly misunderstood caring brother, so every character that could challenge that in any way must be changed, by any means necessary, to prevent that.

(But really, do they? It's fanfiction. Can you really think of no way to make Jiang Cheng be the character you want him to be without mutilating everyone else? If you truly feel for him, truly think his actions make sense, truly wish to show how his relationships can be fixed without him altering his own attitude... then shouldn't it be easy enough, to persuade others of this, without turning the cohesive characters around him into a farce?)

* - since I know this is going to get disputed, even if only internally, by someone; the literal second scene involving Jiang Cheng (immediately post dancing-statue attack, Jiang Cheng suspects and wants to test with Zidian) has Wei Wuxian realise he's not going to be able to escape without some proof of innocence (i.e. reading the room, despite the stress of the moment). He then deliberately steps out of cover so Jiang Cheng can hit him, proving he's not possessing Mo Xuanyu, and then, when that's not enough to guarantee his freedom, he recognises that, and plays on Jiang Cheng's ego (and ymmv homophobia) by saying he's not his type, so Jiang Cheng can't take him without losing too much face, which Wei Wuxian knows he won't do, since Jiang Cheng is very concerned with reputation and appearances (after all, that's why he refused to help Wen Qing and Wen Ning, in spite of the debt he owed them). If that doesn't indicate Wei Wuxian is a clever person who thinks things through, I don't know what does.

** - not as worried about this being disputed, but I can see people thinking this so; no, Lan Wangji doesn't think he knows best. He did when he was young (or, at least, thought the rules he lived by were definitive morals), and that's what led to his rigid black-and-white thinking regarding rules and such. Then he got older, and got more experience, and made some mistakes, and realised that different people approach the world differently, and that he needed to be more flexible and meet people halfway if he wanted to be able to help them. See his change in attitude toward mo dao/gui dao.

*** - fic challenge; see how many fics that portray Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng as close, loving brothers, and also contain the close, caring, trustful friendship between Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning. It's very, very few. On some level, I think everyone who wants to show Jiang Cheng as #bestbrother knows that, from his actions to his attitude, Wen Ning is what a beloved, caring, bad-reputation-but-is-actually-just-misunderstood baby-brother-figure should be.

**** - at the end of the day, everyone has the right the write whatever they like in their fic. I'm a full supporter and encourager of that. But if you don't make it clear that you are going to write OOC, I reserve the right to feel frustrated when I stumble across it. I would never comment it in the fic itself, Ican't imagine anything more poorly mannered, but I am, apparently, not above vague blogging about it (hopefully vague enough that no one can identify any specific fics).

Lan Wangji dies after the thirty-third strike. Lan Xichen does not handle it well. *fleabag voice* This is a fix it. Tracing back his steps, all his life, every decision he’s ever made, every bruise and every cut – it leads back to his father. Jin Guangyao has regret nestled where silent calculation used to sit. He’s not surprised to still feel the cold prickle of acrimony right next to it. A kick to the chest and Jin Guangyao had promised to ascend those stairs in bright Jin Gold and rise to meet his father on equal footing. Now he’s dressed in Lan Blue and no chance to fulfill that promise. He makes a new one then, staring into the flames. He swears it on the memory of Nie Mingjue’s lips against his skin and Lan Xichen’s cold silver eyes. He’s made of regret instead of Jin Gold now and he will not cower down in fear. He will make his father pay for it.

so you know how I've recc'd some fics on here as "comfort fics"? this is, uh... I'd say this is basically the opposite of that! I am very rarely this masochistic in my reading habits because there's already so much pain in canon, but oh my god, this fic compels me, it destroys me, and it's not even finished yet! I absolutely stand by the concept that the best way to reconcile NieYao is by hitting Xichen with the Whump Hammer, and this fic takes that concept and runs a fucking marathon with it; what do NieYao do when their moral centre decides he's had enough of being nice and reasonable??? in that way, we get a fantastic "who you are in the dark" character study of each of them, and oh boy, you know something's going badly wrong when Mingjue is the most reasonable and restrained of 3zun.

there is so much more to this plot than just 3zun though - and every new plot point is an icepick right to the heart and had me getting up to PACE AWAY MY FEELINGS because there just ??? keeps being more???? this fic is not a fun or lighthearted read, but it is INCREDIBLE and will have you on the edge of your fucking seat, and if you are in the right kind of mood then I would thoroughly recommend it.
