Pin the tail on the fox
by RMoonberry (@rmoonberry)
Not rated, WIP, 40k, Wangxian
Summary: Three years after his death, Wei Wuxian is reincarnated as an ordinary fox. The life as a fox is simple, but after losing his papa Fox, he somehow ends up in the deep forests of Cloud Recess. Kay's comments: Very weak for stories where Wei Wuxian, after his death, gets reborn, especially if he gets reborn as an animal, like in this story. Here, he grows up as a fox, but he retains his memories of the past life and soon starts to cultivate in this new form again. He also grows up close to the Cloud Recesses and soon enough, he's discovered by A-Yuan and Jingyi. More shenanigans ensure and Wei Wuxian gets loved as he should be! A very cute and creative story that I binged! Excerpt: A sharp gasp sounded and was soon pulled by small hands “NO! RELEASE IT. BAD FOX” Wei Wuxian released the rabbit and jumped hard onto a boy's chest to get away, bristling like a cat. The rabbit didn't really move from there, it just stood still while he sniffed at the snow. "Ouch!" "A-Yi, are you alright?" Another little boy ran over to the one that Wei Wuxian had just taken down. He stared at the boy, feeling familiar "A-Yuan, that fox wanted to eat the rabbit!" A-Yi accused as he pointed an accusing finger at Wei Wuxian. "And he also knocked me to the ground!" Wei Wuxian stared at the other boy, A-Yuan, his heart pounding in his chest. Both children wore Lan robes and carried small ribbons. They were absolutely adorable, but Wei Wuxian couldn't stop repeating the name A-Yuan in his head. A-Yuan, A-Yuan, A-Yuan. It wasn't possible, right? It was just a boy who looked alike and shared the same name. "It's just a baby, A-Yi" A-Yuan helped A-Yi and then turned to him "Hello" A-Yuan smiled, moving very slowly so as not to scare him."Sorry little fox, but you can't eat this rabbit, it belongs to my A-Die"

Time travel AU where post canon Lan Qiren travels back in time to when Wei Wuxian is 4 and has just lost his parents. Lan Qiren may hate the man (now boy), but he still follows the rules strictly and will not kill. Instead, Lan Qiren finds a 4 year old Wei Wuxian cowering in an alley hiding from dogs. He protects the boy because the rules tell him that it is his duty to do so.
There is a spiteful part of him that wants to send this boy far away. However, he reconsiders when he thinks of how the Wei Wuxian in his previous life created Demonic Cultivation when left unattended. The best way to keep the boy in line, Lan Qiren figures, is to raise him himself as a ward. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer, they say.
So that is exactly what Lan Qiren does.
Wei Wuxian is brought back to the Cloud Recesses and raised as a ward alongside Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji. Lan Qiren would prefer otherwise, but he doesn't trust anyone else but himself to control Wei Wuxian.
As time goes by, Wei Wuxian proves to be the same and different to the one that Lan Qiren knew previously. He's energetic and mischievous, carefree, with a love for teasing others. Every bit as genius and inventive as Lan Qiren knew of the boy in his previous life. However, there was a strong sense of justice that he didn't notice the last time (or refused to see, but it would take years for him to admit to himself).
And Wei Wuxian thrives in a way that Lan Qiren didn't expect. He knew that Wei Wuxian was powerful and intelligent, yet he did not realize just how so. As much as the boy loved to tease and joke around, he could also be found in the Library Pavilion studying whatever random topic caught his interest. Talking everyone's ears off on what he learned or ways that certain things can be improved upon.
It infuriates Lan Qiren to no end because many times, Wei Wuxian is right. Many times, Wei Wuxian just needs guidance to find the right direction or a different perspective. Since Lan Qiren was raising him alongside his own nephews, the people that Wei Wuxian goes to the most are them: Lan Qiren, Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji. The latter two always happy and excited to discuss the myriad topics, while the former confused as to the feelings he's having for the boy.
Lan Qiren's sister-in-law passes, and Wei Wuxian kneels next to Lan Wangji in the snow for hours silently in comfort. It's the first indication that the boy is secretly kind and compassionate (not so much if had he paid attention the last time and rid himself of clouded judgments). It's the event that causes the two boys to be inseparable. Of course Lan Qiren is worried but, he tells himself that he will not let them marry. He will not let Wei Wuxian turn into that evil man he ended up being.
Years keep going by, and Lan Qiren finds himself slowly warming up to Wei Wuxian. He's there for many important firsts (losing his teeth, golden core formation, getting his sword, etc). He will never admit that his heart squeezed when the boy accidentally calls him A-die without thinking because he's so excited about something he's learned.
Jiang Fengmian comes to the Cloud Recesses when he finds out that Weo Wuxian is there. Desperately, he tried to convince Lan Qiren to let the boy become a part of Yunmeng Jiang. But Lan Qiren is adamant in his refusal. The boy was raised there the last time and look at how he ended up! He doesn't know that this fundamentally changed Wei Wuxian's destiny. From a tragic hero given a second chance to a free boy allowed to be happy.
The Jiang sect leader mentions during this visit that Wei Wuxian owes Lan Qiren a life debt. It's something that hadn't crossed Lan Qiren's mind. Not really. He had been raising the boy selfishly to change a horrible future. Sure. However, it was against the rules and his own morals to demand a child pay reparations to be allowed to live. He has felt the same way when Lan Sizhui, his good perfect Lan Sizhui, had been adopted into the family. To Lan Qiren, it was unfathomable to demand payment from a child in such ways.
And anyway, Wei Wuxian's genius was already making itself known. If the boy invented even half of what he came up with in his previous life (Lan Qiren crossed his fingers for no Demonic Cultivation), then the Lan Sect would be paid in full from the proceeds.
Still, years continued to creep by, and Lan Qiren began to feel pride in Wei Wuxian. He followed the rules decently well, received his punishment with little protest, and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. The boy could be seen at any given moment debating an array of topics with seniors, elders, and peers.
When Wei Wuxian started going on night hunts with Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, the three became known as the Three Jades of Lan. Pride bloomed even more in Lan Qiren's heart. He had successfully turned Wei Wuxian into a good and polished man. What he didn't realize was that he gave structure to a boy who needed it and didn't make him feel guilty for existing.
The Wens came and tried to burn the Cloud Recesses down but didn't succeed. Between Lan Qiren, Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji, the wards were strengthened, and the books copied and protected. The Sunshot campaign took longer to fight because Wei Wuxian had learned long ago of the dangers to the mind and body that it caused. He had also learned that he shouldn't rip himself apart to help others. Lan Qiren had implored the boy to never try and had used the boy's love and adoration for Lan Xichen and especially Lan Wangji to convince him.
After the Sunshot campaign, Wei Wuxian comes to Lan Qiren about the innocent Wens cultivator and noncultivator alike. By this point, Lan Qiren can agree that innocent people should not die because of selfish greed and blind prejudice. There are years of trials completed by a multisect jury. The Wen sect survives but becomes a minor sect by the time the trials and reparations are completed. Under Wen Qionglin, they focus on medicine and archery.
Wen Qionglin swears brotherhood with Wei Wuxian. It doesn't surprise Lan Qiren in the least bit. Had it been a lifetime ago, it would've infuriated him yet with all these years and direct dealings with Wen Qionglin, he respects the boy. Admires the gentleness that hides a fierce strength and sense of justice. Especially admires Wen Qing, who Lan Xichen ends up falling for and marrying. Again, had it been a lifetime ago, he would've lost his mind. Now, Lan Qiren can see Wen Qing for her genius, her directness, strictness, and her advancements in medicine.
After Lan Xichen and Wen Qing marry, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian approach Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen to ask about marriage. There is no denying them at this point because he knows that the Wei Wuxian of his previous life is nothing like this current Wei Wuxian (he is but Lan Qiren has no one to admit it to). And anyway, he knows the two will simply elope if denied.
It's several years later, when Lan Qiren finally sits Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Lan Xichen down and tells them a story from a lifetime ago in a forgotten timeliness that may exist somewhere out there if you believe in multiple universes (not surprisingly Wei Wuxian does). They patiently listen as Lan Qiren details everything. There is silence for a long, unbearable moment when he's finished speaking.
Eventually, it's broken by a hug from Wei Wuxian, "Thank you, A-die, for giving me another chance in this life."
"I should be the one thanking you, A-Ying," Lan Qiren says softly, himself grateful for his second life.

Wei Ying, an immortal widely known in the cultivation world, comes to visit the Cloud recesses during the Study Conference when Lan WangJi is assisting as a teenager.
He takes no mind to day or night, time is a mere social construct for the immortal! so he gets in the Cloud recesses during night, and is stopped from doing so by the young Lan WangJi.
Wei Ying looks at the young man and smirks, because, how come he's the immortal one but this one adorable disciple looks like the immortal one instead?
Lan WangJi doesn't even let the intruder speak, and tells the other man who he thinks must be around his age, all the rules he's broken. Wei Ying just let's him take him to the Hanshi, where Lan XiChen and Lan Qiren are occupied with a private lesson.
And what a surprise for the younger ones of the Lan present in the room when WangJi cannot even finish his sentence of how many rules this unruly disciple has broken, before his uncle is standing up and bowing to the man at his side.
XiChen looks at his uncle with an open mouth, and he and his brother share a look of confusion. What is going on?!
"Immortal one, this Lan Qiren is honored to be on your presence," Uncle says. Xichen swallows dry. WangJi looks to the man at his side and goes:
"Shufu, he broke the rules of our Sect. He should still be punished for the offense."
Wei Ying hollers a laugh that bends him in half. He likes this one! He's the best he's ever seen! Daring to ask for punishment to an immortal, right after seeing a display of respect and obedience from his own elders. It lights something inside his chest.
Lan Qiren sighs because technically, WangJi is right. But how could he, a mere cultivator, dare and punish the man? And the Lan Sect... wouldn't that bring a thousand of troubles to his doorstep? So he glares at his nephew and bows again to the immortal in the room, "Immortal one, this one begs your pardon for his nephew's sake. He is still young-"
Wei Ying interrupts him, waving a hand and signaling him to stop the bow. He still has tears in his eyes from the laughter. "No need, Lan Qiren. I find him quite interesting. Besides, he's got a point. I did break in. Besides the age of this old one, there's nothing preventing the Lan Sect from providing a proper punishment. Just don't break me any bones! I'm old already!" He says, hands on his hips and elbowing Lan WangJi in the process.
Now, WangJi knows. He knows now that this man is immortal, all-powerful and mighty. Besides being older than him. So WangJi knows he should stand the man's displays silently and still. But he really can't stand to be touched by anyone, so he steps to the side without even sparing the man a glance.
Wei Ying laughs again.
The immortal man has an annoying laugh, WangJi thinks.
*
"WangJi-di," he hears from afar, and tries to hurry his step without running. This is in vain, because the man still breaks the rules and does run to him.
His uncle can't understand either, why the immortal that has come to the Cloud recesses has gotten a fixation on him. For the past weeks, the man, Wei Ying, has been following him around and about without a rest. Whenever he sees something he wants to share, or whenever he needs to ask for something, he doesn't go to his Uncle, and instead finds WangJi. If it's a book he wants to find in the library, or a good spot for painting or meditating... maybe is Lan WangJi's fault a bit. Because he proficiently provided the guest with what he asked, but still. Shouldn't an immortal one share table and hold discussions with older ones instead of a mere teenage boy? WangJi doesn't understand.
He also doesn't understand when the laugh of the man has become a sound he somehow likes to hear, when he disliked it so much at first. Now he feels jittery when he hears it. Wich is a lot.
They've been spending quite the time in the other's company, too. Since the Lan Sect wouldn't dare to whip the immortal, instead they've assigned him the punishment they've been giving to the visiting disciples when they break minor rules; copying conduct a hundred times. So they would spend most of their day at the library after the classes end. Then, his uncle would invite the immortal to eat dinner with them, and WangJi is the one who has to accompany him to his assigned rooms. Certainly, during the lessons is the only time he's not in company of Wei Ying.
One day, he's sitting inside the library, somehow alone. Wei Ying is nowhere to be seen, but his uncle would scold him if he dared to go and find the man to bring him to punishment again, so he's alone, reading poetry and taking notes of it for fun, when he hears his name being called again.
"Lan Zhan!"
WangJi looks towards the voice, finding Wei Ying proped up on the window frame. He's halfway opening his mouth to chastise him from doing so and telling him to use the doors when Wei Ying stretches his hand forward, offering him... bunnies.
WangJi is on his feet fast. He reaches for the bunnies and holds them carefully, mouth shut and eyes soft. He can't help it. The bunnies are pushing his palm with their cold noses and they are just so...
"Cute," he hears from the man in front of him, still hanging from the window frame. He doesn't look, he doesn't want to look. He feels his ears growing hot.
Wei Ying looks at the young man and just... yeah. Affirms his word. Lan WangJi is cute. The bunnies too, but the boy particularly is the most cute, with the tips of his ears red, and the way his fingers caresses the rabbits with the utmost care and adoration.
Then, "pets aren't allowed in the Cloud recesses," and it sounds so shy in comparison to the confidence with which he states all the other rules. That Wei Ying has to do something, say something, to make it better for Lan Zhan. He can't have him sad!
"Well, they were already here. I just wanted to show them to you!" He says, and tempted, he reaches and pets the bunnies too. They do look soft.
WangJi doesn't take his hand away from the rabbits when Wei Ying's comes in his sight. Their hands rub for a moment and WangJi remains still regardless of how much fire it lights in him. He endures. The bunnies look comfortable.
Wei Ying eyes the younger man, and smiles.
He can wait. He can always wait and see what happens next. But he can't deny that Lan Zhan has become someone important to him like no one has in decades, so he will treasure the man.
*
WangJi is panicking.
He knows Wei Ying is an immortal. That he's centuries old. But the man doesn't make his confused mind any favors when he acts the way he does, carefree and young, so full of freedom and smiles. He knows for a fact that not all the known immortals were stoic and calm, like Baoshan Sanren is known to be. But Wei Ying could might as well be on the same age group that WangJi and no one would bat an eye to his presence there.
And he would actually look more the part there than as an immortal. So WangJi is... is lost. He doesn't want to admit why he feels so much around the man, but he does and that he can't lie. Xichen has been looking at him with an increasing worry in his eyes and forehead and he can only keep it in so long before the traitor goes and tells their Uncle. And Uncle, Immortal or not, will kick Wei Ying out of the Cloud recesses if he thinks he's corrupting his nephew. So Lan WangJi is just there. Not knowing what to do. Sulking as he caresses the bunnies Wei Ying gave him.
"WangJi."
Speaking of...
"Brother," he answers, getting to his feet to greet his older brother properly.
XiChen smiles at him and pets the rabbit a bit too, "they are really adorable. Does Uncle know? You know that pets are not-"
"Not pets, brother. They were here. I am just caring for them from time to time." He interrupts, and has to close his mouth so fast that his teeth clatter. Xichen looks at him surprised but still laughs a bit.
Pets in Cloud recesses are just as forbidden as unnecessary laughter, so they're even.
"I see," his brother says, "friends, then."
And WangJi agrees, "mh."
Silence settles around them for a moment they give to admire the bunnies. There are just a couple of them, but something in XiChen eyes makes him think that that will not be the case for too long.
Then, XiChen speaks again, "WangJi..." tentatively.
He looks up, afraid of what he'll find in his brother's eyes.
"About the Immortal Wei, you... you're close with him. Is he a friend too?"
WangJi wishes for a moment that they were more, and he stunts himself with the idea, before pushing it aside to answer his brother's questions, "He is. A friend."
XiChen knows his brother too well, because he doesn't let the little shadow go unnoticed, "Do you consider him to be just a friend?"
WangJi doesn't lie, so he doesn't answer. His brother sighs heavily.
"WangJi, do you want him to be more? He's an immortal! This doesn't add up to me. He's- I don't trust his character. He's not acting like other immortals and it makes me wonder why he came to the Cloud Recesses for. I worry for you, didi..." he says, exasperated.
"Brother," he says almost shy. He's about to confirm his brother's suspicions because as soon as he opens his mouth, he's defending Wei Ying, "Wei Ying is good. He is carefree but he is not vane. Uncle wouldn't let him spend time with me if he suspected his character or his intentions... and I know him better. He would not do anything unrighteous or plot. He's not like that, brother."
XiChen looks at him and it takes a while, but a sad smile makes way in his face, "So you do want him to be more..."
WangJi looks down to the bunnies in his hands, "I don't dare to," he confesses.
Time goes swiftly from then on. The Conference ends, the other Sects' disciples depart from the Cloud recesses, and Wei Ying also does. But there's a difference, because WangJi has given him a gift; an entrance token he can use to come and go from the Cloud recesses as he pleases, as long as he doesn't come after the curtfew. WangJi made sure to remind his friend of that. Wei Ying smiled at him for it.
Then one day, letters arrive. Wei Ying sends them, along with more gifts for him, for uncle and even a couple of them for his brother.
Uncle does seem pleased with most of the gifts he receives; books from afar, music scores and even an incense burner made of a meteorite. His uncle is very pleased, WangJi counts it as a win.
Brother receives a Xiao, also made from the meteorite. His brother is impressed with it and the way the metal changes colors under the light; a rainbow travels the instrument in a lovely way. It is a precious gift. And he also gets some good tea from afar.
WangJi receives the most. He gets drawings made by Wei Ying's hand, picturing amazing places he wishes to see someday too. He gets musical scores to try on his guqin, and even a robe with a special cut that Wei Ying got for him in a far land. He receives loquats one time too. And he is happy. He likes this as much as he longs for it.
He longs to be standing by Wei Ying's side and see all the beautiful places he's seen only on drawings, and to listen to the different music from the different cultures around. He wants to nighthunt with Wei Ying, help the people that is in need. He reads the letters and pictures himself besides his friend, his soulmate, so much that it hurts from time to time.
He grows older, Wei Ying stays the same.
The next time Wei Ying graces the Cloud recesses with a visit, it is not unannounced. This time, he sent a letter to let them know, and comes by the door with his own token. WangJi counts that as another win. And he has to keep adding wins to his score when Wei Ying smiles at him again, wide and happy.
He can't even complain of being hugged in front of the whole group of disciples that came to welcome the immortal being in their lands. Instead, he closes his eyes tight and hugs back. His Wei Ying.
Uncle is not oblivious to his nephew's heart. He just hasn't said anything because he has seen the Immortal's heart too. In the way they grew longing whenever his nephew wasn't seeing, in how he held his hands behind his back whenever WangJi was around; as if containing himself from reaching for a hand or a strand of hair. He's seen Wei Ying gifting his nephew with practical things and other not so much, like the bunnies that are now a part of the Cloud Recesses. But over all, Lan Qiren has seen his own nephew smiling at the letters and the smugness in him when he liked his own gifts. He's seen the both of them being happy with how things were, and it pleased him greatly because this is what he wished for his little A-Zhan. A partner that would have in mind his nephew's necessities and times to do and think and act. Wei Ying lacks patience for many things, but not for Lan WangJi.
So when they hugged so much and long in front of the gates, he just sighed and waited to bow to the immortal, regardless of how disrespectful the gesture is from the man; he went right to WangJi and hugged him promptly! He ignored all the entourage of people that are standing there. But he doesn't blame him. It's been five years since they've seen each other. And he also knows that despite how many letters WangJi received, due to how much Wei Ying moved around, he didn't get to receive any himself. So he indulges the pair.
*
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan! You liked your gifts?" He asks as they walk towards the Jingshi. He knows the way, but he still walks besides WangJi.
"Mh, Wei Ying chose good gifts. I appreciated them," WangJi answers.
There's something in the air... that none of them can put their finger on, but it makes them nervous. As if the forest and the houses and even the birds around them were waiting for something to happen. Anticipation that grows louder with each step, that tries to hurry them to something. But they take their time, their steps remain unhurried if a bit more stumbler than usual.
"I'm glad, I wondered... but I'm happy you liked them, Lan Zhan," Wei Ying smiles at him and now he almost stumbles for real.
With that pace, when they get to the Jingshi, there's a servant already waiting for their arrival with tea and snacks for the evening. Wei Ying takes the tray and thanks the servant for the attention as WangJi opens the door to his home.
Inside, Wei Ying is frozen. There are some of his drawings and paintings hanged on the walls, many of his gifts are on display and it makes him want to cry a bit for how precious Lan WangJi is, and how lucky he is to be appreciated by the man. Because he's a lot more a man now than he was when they met.
WangJi has a bigger frame now, even grew a bit taller than Wei Ying for an inch. He realized when he hugged him at the gates, how time passed by for his Lan Zhan regardless of how he's still the same. But that's alright.
Lan Zhan still has the same soft look on his eyes, the same little smile and the same smirk, and he's still as beautiful as he was the day they met on the walls of the Cloud Recesses. But now he seems different too. So he observes the man in front of him and enjoys his presence after so long.
WangJi serves them the tea, and listens to everything Wei Ying is saying with care. A care that doesn't come from him being an immortal but from him just being Wei Ying. They spend the day like that, until dinner, which they are to spend with the Lan main family.
Lan Qiren gives the pair a knowing look, and Lan XiChen seems almost resigned, but they do listen to him and ask him about his travels.
There, he offers the Lan another gift; talismans and things that he came up with and thought useful for the Sect. It wouldn't do for other Sects, for these are to be activated with music. One of them, when used, gives the illusion of flying butterflies around the space, and it makes a really good company for when the Lan were playing their instruments. Other of the talismans works wonders for finding a specific book one cannot remember the title or look, but a single line of it. And the other one is for helping with excessive noises. It zones out the loud, and makes everything easy to the ear. It is dumb, somehow, but useful if put in a very specific case. Wich is, in the end, useful.
Lan Qiren thanks him for the gifts and sends them on their way after the meal, and once again, WangJi is the one in charge of accompanying Wei Ying to his rooms.
Lan WangJi felt like he had a timer set on his very stomach, nerves on edge and hands unsteady. He gave Wei Ying a long stare, as the other walked ahead just for a step.
He is happy, content. But oh, how he wishes.
And then before he knows it his fingers are closing around Wei Ying's wrist, stopping the man in the middle of the path, threes tall and giving a sense of solitude.
The immortal turns towards the younger man, eyebrows shoot up in a silent question. Which is for the best because he probably wouldn't have been able to speak; Lan Zhan's beauty is heavenly, the moon already at his back just like the first time he met him, but there's anticipation on his golden eyes, and Wei Ying, who cannot even talk, clearly can't either move.
WangJi looks at his friend's eyes, then he steps closer, audacious once he's over the fear of Wei Ying pushing him away. After all, Wei Ying doesn't mind the touches, the closeness. And WangJi wants that.
Wei Ying gulps saliva, but tries to steady his heart beat with a deep breath. WangJi is closer now.
The younger man envelops his arms around Wei Ying's neck and holds him close, "I missed you," goes unsaid but it is obvious for both of them.
Wei Ying's knees almost buckle under him, and he holds WangJi a bit harder just for the sake of stay standing. But once he's stable, he too, hugs closer, pressing all of his upper body against Lan zhan's.
They stay there for a while, not enough time for either of them. Then is Wei Ying the one pulling apart for a moment because he really misses seeing WangJi's handsome face, but once again, the golden eyes steals his breath away.
And now their faces are just centimeters apart, every little thing they can see on the other's face is kept on their brains and memories, is treasured.
"Lan Zhan-"
"Wei Ying-"
They spoke at the same time, and Wei Ying cannot help but chuckle a bit. Encouraged, he presses his arms around the other a bit harder, and tilts his head to the side, shamelessly.
"Tell me, Lan Zhan?" But WangJi, despite breathing weirdly, gives no other reaction.
"Wei Ying," his voice is... deeper. Darker even. And Wei Ying notices thanks to his perfect pitch, chills running down his back.
"Lan Zhan?" He asks in a whisper now, all the strenght he has left on his body. Then WangJi's eyes fall on his lips and he definitely stumbles a bit.
Due to this misstep, WangJi also makes a step back and before they both know it, they're supporting their weird hug against one of the trunk of the threes, having stumbled into it.
WangJi's back is pressed on the three, and to prevent his hands from being squashed, Wei Ying is holding onto the sides of his waist, fingers grabbing the silk of his robes.
Wei Ying looks almost savage, still held close by WangJi's own arms too. He himself cannot be in a much better state either, much less when this scene has been on many, many of his dreams and fantasies he's had for years. He's seen himself on the mirror one too many times, he knows exactly what expressions he must bear on his face right now.
But Wei Ying... He has his gray eyes wide open, sparkling in the moon just like the first time they meet, his mouth agape and a beautiful strand of hair falling over his face. He is the closest thing WangJi knows to a God. He is not sure if WuXian hasn't simply descended from the Heavens instead of worked his golden core until he became an immortal. Wei WuXian is just way too handsome for having been born into the same world as everyone else. He doesn't know that Wei WuXian can't believe that WangJi is mortal. Surely, such a perfect being is nothing else but a God! Gold eyes, full lips and carrying the greatness of the world onto his board shoulders, someone who is righteous, who cares... WuXian simply can't stop falling in love with this man. He can't stop himself from looking at him more. From trying and find every single detail and all the things Lan Zhan is and loves too.
As it is, they just stare at the other for a moment too long, breathing deeply and loudly, bodies reacting to the situation as if they were running laps around the compound.
"Lan Zhan..." Wei Ying calls, bitting his lips afterwards, "I really can't if you're like this. Do you know how hard you're making it for me?"
And WangJi, the brat, has the audacity of smiling all smug and pulls him closer.
"Mh, Wei Ying is to blame. Too pretty."
Wei Ying groans and hides his face on the other's shoulder. "Cruel, bad... you're bad on my heart, Lan Zhan."
WangJi snorts, but answers softly, "So is Wei Ying."
The immortal looks up and starts to tilt his head a bit, and if he thought that WangJi would quietly and patiently meet him in the middle, he's wrong.
Lan WangJi grabs his face with one of his big hands and presses their lips together at once.
"Mh-mh!" Wei WuXian let's out a little gasp of surprise, but soon he's way too melted into Lan WangJi's lips to do much else but kissing back.

Summary: “Can I stay here with you guys while I check this, please?” Wei Ying asked in a small and shaky voice as he placed a pregnancy test face down on the coffee table. “Lan Zhan’s not home yet and I don’t want to look at it alone.”
For a brief moment, Lan Qiren somehow forgot that Wangji and his omega were married adults and in a perfectly reasonable stage of life to start trying for a family, and he worried that he and Xichen were going to have to console Wei Wuxian through the discovery of an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy.
“It’s just that I don’t think I can handle getting another negative result right now,” Wei Ying whispered glumly.
Oh.
In which Wangxian are trying (and struggling) to have a baby and Lan Qiren is a good uncle.
Notes: 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 such an amazing good uncle LQR fic. if you're looking for a short and sweet feelgood fic to read, this is a great choice!!

[Good uncle]
Lan Qiren | Mo Dao Zu Shi Modern AU 28-05-2021
[#lanqiren - modern]
what if lqr follows the same strict schedule of sleep with nearly no miss in years (except on urgencies needing him to be awake and there.). He doesn't necessarily enforce the sleeping schedule on his nephew once they are teenagers, but they do follow it most of the time when they are home.
They could be out until later than 9, but he needs lxc and lwj to tell him when they are not back for 9 and if they intend on coming back home. He will also break the schedule if he ever received a call from them asking for a lift or if they have problems.
Studied with friends until too late and there are no buses anymore? Where are you, am coming.
Kinda rambling, but I just think lqr is the kind of guardian that whatever dumb shit you did at 1 am, he will still come to pick you up. It's on the other side of town? No problem, just stay somewhere safe and I'll keep talking with you on the phone to make sure you are okay.
where jc and wwx were never sure jfm or yzy would come for them (especially jc), lxc and lwj just /know/ lqr is ready to pick them up whenever and wherever because he would rather know them safe at home despite the time rather than outside with nowhere to go.
lqr just seems reliable and ready to keep his family safe

How badly do we want to dislike Lan Qiren in this fic?
I need an antagonist and he is very quickly shaping up to be the "evil stepmother" of the story. Between that and Jiang Cheng just being himself we should have good angst?
Right?
Not really sure what's Going to happen with Jiang Cheng though... Either he gets laid and gets over himself or he's getting his legs broken.

ohhh so three months have passed since the guanyin temple and wgxn spent them just walking around, being whenever the chaos is, helping people, admiring the nature, enjoying new climates and customs, in blissful unawareness of the cultivation world news.
and how IS your honoured brother, hanguang-jun

Love and marriage
"I will never get married." Seven year old Lan Wangji proclaims to his uncle as he practices calligraphy under the senior's guidance one evening. It had been about six months after his mother's passing, and only two days ago that little Wangji waited dutifully in the harsh winter storm for the door to the gentian house to open.
It did not. It never will again. But Wangji's resolve seemed iron-clad, and he did not leave until curfew that day.
It had been a miracle how he did not become ill - or worse! - spending time outside in such conditions. But though his body seemed surprisingly unaffected, his mind had not, falling into a deep, pensive state, even more quiet than before.
It had been for this reason that Lan Qiren brought the boy in to spend time with him and observe him - all under the guise of teaching. Despite his young age, Wangji had already mastered calligraphy.
The boy's statement made his uncle's eyes lift from the book he had been reading, an eyebrow raised. Part of him wished to say "you better not!", as any other paternal figure would tell their child at this age. But Lan Qiren had a feeling there was more to those words than it appeared on the surface, so he asked:
"What brought this on?"
"I have been thinking." Little Wangji says, a long pause following as he places his brushes neatly to the side of his parchment paper. "It is because mother married father that she is...gone."
Lan Qiren stared, stunned, at the little boy before him. He seemed confident in his assessment, though nevertheless saddened about it, like a man that had found a treasure that brought him no joy.
"It is also because their marriage that you and your brother have been born." Lan Qiren countered, in a way that was almost gentle, if slightly chiding. "Life is not as simple as it appears to be. And not all marriages are the same."
Not all marriages are like your parents' - but Lan Qiren could not have said that without sounding bitter and resentful, which was unadvisable in dealing with a grieving child that was not an orphan only if by virtue of his father still being alive and nothing more.
"How do you know?" Wangji asked, earnest though disbelieving, "How can one be sure their marriage will not be... lonely?"
Lan Qiren stared at the boy again, seeing so much of his father in his honeyed eyes. How could he respond to that? Lan Qiren had never been particularly romantically inclined. If anything, he preferred the company of books and studies more than people, and he had never found himself yearning for even the concept of a romantic relationship. He had received numerous requests for courtship or marriage - some even for mere physical encounters - but he had never felt the need or the desire to pursue anything of that nature with anyone. What would he know about marriages, let alone happy ones?
"It is never guaranteed how such things may turn out." Lan Qiren replied, after a while.
Wangji did not seem to react to that answer. His uncle sighed quietly - what had he been doing, working himself up over the words of a seven year old? Kids his age are fickle, as it is expected. Why had he been treating the boy's words as final? For all he knew, Wangji may change his mind by supper or by next morning - after all, children his age do not have the conviction of adults, nor do they even remember their promises by the time they may have to make good on them.
"Regardless, if you do not wish to marry, then you may not if it is not necessary" Lan Qiren added, and little nodded slightly, satisfied with the answer. He picked his brush back up and continued to write.
After a while, he spoke: "I will neber keep anybody against their will."
--
Lan Wangji was 15 years old when he first met Wei Wuxian and it became apparent to all their peers and the rest of the Lan sect that they did not get along. With Wei Wuxian boisterous and relentless pursuit of friendship and Lan Wangji's ice-cold refusal of it, it appeared that whatever cordiality one might expect between young masters of their standing was lost forever.
However, Lan Qiren had raised the famed Second Jade of Lan and he could easily see it was not disgust or anger that he expressed over Yunmeng Jiang's head disciple, but rather an annoyed, relentless denial of his otherwise normal desire for human connection.
It did not bring Lan Qiren any ease though - Cangse Sanren's son was so visibly her own that the man sometimes felt like he interacted with her ghost - and he did not believe that to be a good thing for Lan Wangji. Despite his indifferent exterior, his heart was fragile, and Lan Qiren worried for him in the presence of Wei Wuxian.
It had been this very topic that had come up as Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen shared tea one day, enjoying the fresh magnolia blooms.
"It appears Wangji may not keep to his childhood promise." Xichen smiled, "I believe you have noticed it as well."
Lan Qiren sighed deeply as he took a sip of herbal tea. "You appear unnecessarily happy about this development."
Xichen smiled again, fox-like, and for a moment Lan Qiren saw his brother, young and mischevous, concocting plans over tea.
"Does he know?" Lan Qiren found himself asking.
"He seems to be struggling with it." Xichen replied, looking into the distance towards the training grounds, wherefrom a lot of otherwise unusual noise was echoing.
"As expected."
Silence befalls the two. Xichen smiles meaningfully into his tea.
"Would it be wrong of me to assume this is one of the reasons you have entrusted young master Wei's punishment to Wangji?"
Lan Qiren's eyes narrow, but he does not reply. Xichen's smile widens, but conversation lulls.
---
Lan Wangji had so desperately hoped Wei Wuxian would listen. He had hoped Wei Wuxian would be able to understand all the things Lan Wangji could not say, all his intentions, all his worries and all his feelings - and he would have listened, and agreed.
But he had not.
And for a moment, a traitorous few seconds, it had crossed Lan Wangji's mind. It had, despite how much he had tried to convince himself it never would, that such a thing would never even occur to him.
But it did.
He had thought of trying to do what his father had done in his pursuit of protecting his mother - he had thought of taking Wei Ying with him to the Cloud Recesses whether he opposed it or not, and keeping him there, safely, for the rest of forever.
He had refused even the thought of it, dismissing it as quickly as it had appeared, and it disgusted him to know his mind had been able to conjure it in the first place - the very thing he had sworn he would never wish for let alone ever do, had presented itself as an option in his mind.
And Lan Wangji hated it.
He had visited the gentian house that day, and stayed there until curfew.
"I wish to bring someone back to the Cloud Recesses... take him back and hide him away... but he is not willing."
---
For all the agony Lan Wangji suffered, he felt no remorse at all, as if he had fulfilled his fate in a way he had not even known had been intended for him. He had accepted his punishment with placid resignation, not even once declaring himself regretful of his actions. It was difficult for him to assess whether he had failed or not, but at least he had tried to protect the man he could have finally allpwed himself to accept he loved.
But, almost as though fate was keen on fulfilling the promise he made at seven years old, that very man had just been pronounced dead, the news delievered by celebratory letters and festivals that bore more evil than Wei Wuxian had ever done.
Lan Xichen carefully assisted the healers cleaning and bandaging Lan Wangji's wounds, a process he had grown to despise as much as he looked forward to it. It was only with this pretext that he could visit his little brother now, as he had been sent into seclusion, and it worried Xichen not to know how he was dealing not only with the new knowledge, but his own state as well.
As the healers left the room, Xichen stood by his brother's bed for a few minutes, in silence. He had hoped some words would be coming to him at some point, but he could not find anything appropriate to say at the moment, stroking Wangji's hair off his face instead.
"Were you there?" Wangji asked after a few moments, voice hoarse and empty, as if he had screamed it raw.
"I was not."
"Who was?"
"I do not know."
Lan Xichen had chosen to lie that day, and did not regret it. As much as he valied honesty, he knew it was not the truth Wangji needed then.
What was Xichen supposed to even say? That their uncle had watched the last few moments of Wei Wuxian's life alongside the other sect leaders? That the besiegers cheered on his death as his body disintegrated into nothingness under the force of the Burial Mounds?
That they slaughtered innocent people like cattle?
"Did they find him?"
"No."
That had not been a lie. Many had believed Wei Wuxian had not died, even if they saw him enveloped in resentful energy as he screamed in pain until all that was left was silence. They wanted proof of it, a body, a shred of anything - perhaps to only defile him more.
But they had not found anything.
Wangji sighed, the breath heavy from his lungs.
"I dreamt I married him."
Xichen's eyes turned soft, pitiful, "Perhaps in another life."
"Perhaps."
---
Thirteen years later, the Cloud Recesses murmur with excitement as groups of disciples move to and fro, carrying decorations and supplies like tireless ants of a busy hive.
The wedding is in a couple of weeks, but sect leader Lan as well as master Lan Qiren had ordered the preparations start early in order to ensure all is ready for the great celebration.
"For how much your uncle disapproves of me, he sure is invested in our wedding." Wei Wuxian laughs as he and his soon-to-be-official husband inspect the ancestral hall, the designated venue for the event.
"Uncle is very thorough." Lan Wangji replies, "And his distrust of you has lessened over the past years."
"I would hope so." A laugh, "Though he is probably more concerned in doing right by you."
"Nevertheless, I believe it is for both of us."
Wei Wuxian laughs again, squeezing his beloved's hand. "Say, I heard something from a very, very reliable source..."
"What did my brother tell you again?"
"I heard you said you'd never marry anyone when you were a kid. I bet seven year old Lan Zhan would be disappointed!" Wei Wuxian jokes, a teasing smile on his lips that Lan Wangji cannot be blamed for kissing right now.
"Seven year old me had not met you yet." He replied, softly, "He would've known better."

5. Hi! 🤗
This one is for ITMF. I'd like to read new fics about WWX having a new golden core. No mordern fics or dark ones, please, I'm not in the mood 🙏. I want happy endings!
Thanks again! You make my days much better!!
🥰✨ @wangxiansgirl
The Core Issue by Hauntcats (T, 21k, wangxian, WQ & WWX & WN, NHS & WWX & NMJ, canon divergence, golden core rebuilding, golden core tied to soul, angst w/ happy ending, not JC friendly) WWX meditates a golden core back
when you’re doing all the leaving (then it’s never your love lost) by tardigradeschool (T, 26k, WangXian, Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Canon Divergence, Canon-Typical Violence, Sharing a Bed, Sharing Clothes, Fix-It, the inherent eroticism of under robes, Golden Core Transfer) LWJ gives WWX a part of his own core
🧡 a stone to break your soul, a song to save it by rikke ( M, 180k, WangXian, Arranged marriage, Canon Divergence, Hurt/comfort, Light angst, Canon typical violence) Technically not a new golden core, but a new core of a different type
The Fire Lapping Up the Creek by notevenyou (E, 66k, WangXian, Canon Divergence, Hurt/Comfort, Canon-Typical Violence, Injury, Injury Recovery, Blood, Respiratory Illness, Major Illness, Fever, Grief/Mourning, Burial Mounds, Angst with a Happy Ending, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Hunger and food scarcity, Surgery, Fix-It of Sorts) WWX gets part of someone else's core transplanted into him
Ghosts Shouldn’t by ShanaStoryteller (Not Rated, 15k, WangXian, Grief/Mourning, Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending)
Righteous at a Cost by thunderwear (G, 21k, wangxian, LQR & WWX, Canon Divergence, Fix-It, no one dies, LQR finds out about WWX's core, WWX and LQR are friends??, In My Fic?, its more likely than you think, LWJ in the bg like whats happening?, Fluff, WWX goes to Gusu, Mutual Pining, Golden Core Reveal)
Can't Tell Me Nothin by natacup82 (T, 35k, wangxian, Canon Divergence, Everybody Lives, Family Feels, Communication, BAMF Women)
🔒Away from Trouble by Ilona22 (M, 15k, wangxian, Alternate Universe, Not JC Friendly, WangXian Get a Happy Ending) This is one of my personal favorites, for the growth wwx goes through and what he accomplishes separate from the sects while regrowing a new core for himself. (However, the author doesn’t spend enough time on wangxian romance for it to not just feel like something they tacked on to fill that required box, so don’t go in expecting good wangxian)
What Is Left Over by Loriqod (T, 30k, wangxian, JC & WWX, Yunmeng Shuangjie, Yunmeng brothers, Post-Canon Fix-It, WWX Has a New Golden Core, Happy Ending, WangXian in Love, SO SO SO IN LOVE, bite-sized angst, Canon-Typical Violence, JC & WWX Reconciliation, Training Montage) This one’s WWX redeveloping a core in MXY’s body. It might not be quite what you had in mind, but give it a chance, this fic is ALL about him actually cultivating with the idea of making a new core, & it’s rare to find a fic with that focus. (Even amongst fics that are suppose to be all about that(for some reason people are allergic to showing WWX actually cultivate))
I’m Sorry & Thank You by Iamnotawriter (T, 12k, wangxian, post-canon, Canon Compliant, Golden Core, Canon-Typical Violence, LQR’s epipheny, Angst with a Happy Ending)
Bitter Plants Bearing Sweet Fruit by Kryal (T, 83k, wangxian, canon-typical horror elements, Worldbuilding, Desert, Misuse of Historic Setting, Original Character Death(s), Case Fic, aftermath of canon, Established Relationship, Nothing Explicit But Shameless Innuendo)

6. Alright everyone, give me everything you have where either: (A) WWX is an actual rogue cultivator at the start of the fic, or (B) he leaves the Jiangs (via Madam Yu banishment or getting fed up with them an leaving on his own) and spends time as a rogue cultivator. (I want to see my boy in the wild doing the wild cultivator thing) if he doesn’t have a core at the beginning of the fic, I would appreciate recs where he regains it at some point. I have a Wangxian agenda btw, so WX endgame plz. @omgnectarina
Ad Oblivione by Baph, HikariNoHimeWriter (M, 70k, WangXian, Time Travel Fix-It, Temporary Character Death, Canon-Typical Violence, POV Multiple, Hurt/Comfort, Grief/Mourning, Identity Reveal, Golden Core Reveal, Cultivation World Critical, Not JC Friendly, Abusive YZY, Angst with a Happy Ending) WWX is sent back in time to when he was a child & doesn't get taken in by the Jiangs
We Meet at the Thousandth Step by Admiranda, Rynne (T, 258k, wangxian, CSSR/WCZ, WIP, Canon Divergence, No Sunshot Campaign, CSSR & WCZ Live, Rogue Cultivator WWX, Different First Meeting, Night Hunts, Genius WWX, Inventor WWX, Romance, Drama, Fluff, Strangers to married, Unresolved Sexual Tension, Unresolved Romantic Tension, Everyone Lives AU, Developing Relationship, Minor Violence, Case Fic, Mystery, Flirting, WWX's Canon-Typical Flower Flirting, Arson, There Was Only One Bed, Getting Together, First Kiss, Meeting the Parents, Resolved Sexual Tension, Resolved Romantic Tension, WWX Is a Good Big Brother, New Relationship Bliss, Chinese Mythology & Folklore, Blood and Injury, Yiling siblings)
Cultivating immortality by KizuKatana (E, 230k, wangxian, Canon Divergence, Canon-Typical Violence, Rogue Cultivator WWX, Pining, Mutual Pining, WWX low self-esteem, BAMF WWX, BAMF LWJ, Angst with a Happy Ending, not sure if this qualifies as fix-it but that was my emotional need/intent, Hurt/Comfort, unreliable narrator (wwx's self image is…), sect wars happening, Canon typical darkness, demonic cultivation descriptions in detail, self-indulgent exploration of the creation of demonic cultivation and how it changed WWX, JC and LWJ are reluctant (VERY RELUCTANT) allies, YZY & LQR are made to face up to their faults, JYL is badass (fight me) though not in terms of cultivation strenght, JC gets a chance to redeem himself, Found Family, First Time, novel canon relationship dynamics)
🔒 crying like a fire in the sun by Reverie (cl410) (T, 10k, wangxian, SL/XXC, JC & WWX, BSSR/LY, Runaway WWX, Canon Divergence, Everyone Lives AU, rogue cultivator WWX, Angst, Post Cloud Recesses, Not YZY Friendly, Happy Ending, BSSR is WWX's grandmother instead of grandmaster)
Inchoate by Marinelifeclub (T, 20k, wangxian, Child Abuse, Bad Parent JFM, Bad Parent YZY, Protective LQR, Protective LWJ, Rogue Cultivator WWX, YZY Bashing, JC Bashing, No Golden Core Transfer, Dark JFM)
A Thousand Things by tickertape (M, 108k, wangxian, Canon Divergence, WWX Isn't Adopted by the Jiāngs, Developing Friendships, lots of OCs because I can't help myself and I love them, most of the canon cast make cameos at some point, miscommunication and misunderstandings (they’re idiots your honor), Nightmares, Hurt/Comfort, Panic Attacks, Night Hunts, The Cloud Recesses Rabbits, Cloud Recesses Shenanigans, Slow Burn, like really slow burn, like if it was a bushfire it would take 8 years for it to burn through one (1) forest, the wangxian strangers to obnoxious best friends to obnoxious lovers pipeline, 'shitty cultivation world bureaucracy' is also a running theme, WWXHas a Fear of Dogs)
~*~
7. hello! I was hoping you could recommend fics where wei ying is taken hostage by people who hate lan zhan and lan zhan gets beaten up trying to save him. Maybe kind angsty and emotional? @ivybookworm
~*~
8. hi - for the next itmf, any fics that go on from that haunting almost last scene in the Untamed where LS, WN and LWJ all leave WY alone on the road. angsty ones that explore the idea of WY having no-one would be awesome. thank you so much for all you do! @oldoni
Story-Shaped by lingering_song (T, 13k, NHS & WWX, wangxian, Post-Canon, Chief Cultivator LWJ, Inventor WWX, Found Family, NHS needs a new hobby, And apparently that’s spoiling his Wei-Xiong, Mentioned Character Death, Alcohol, Protective NHS, WangXian Endgame, Not JC Friendly, Not particularly gentry sects friendly overall tbh) NHS finds WWX wandering about. Possibly not as angsty as requester is hoping for, but does address how bad an idea it is to let WWX wander alone
im reminded of a fic but cant recall the one. Wwx is travelling by himself, writing letters to LZ, he stays in a town and it ends up cursed. LZ and the juniors arrive to solve the case. Wwx is acting weird and hides his letters. The juniors read the letters and find out wwx is angry and full of resentment about how he's been treated. They find out the curse resonates from him. They talk it out to resolve matters. Any idea?
some good mistakes by Lise (T, 18k, WangXian, JC & WWX, JC & LWJ, Road Trips, (terrible road trips), Post-Canon, Rescue Missions, Hurt/Comfort, ish, Awkward Conversations, POV JC, JC & WWX Reconciliation, (ish they’re working on it)) link in #13
Rotten Work by ShanaStoryteller (Not Rated, 63k, WangXian, WWX & JL, Post-Canon, Protective WWX, Protective JL, Yunmeng Bros Reconciliation, Reluctant Matchmaker JL) similar to Story Shaped, but it's Jin Ling who finds wwx. // might fit the bill? It isn't overly angsty, but it does have characters remarking on how bad of an idea it is to let WWX go off on his own.
Judge Softly by Chrononautical (E, 32k, wangxian, LSZ & WWX, LQR & WWX, accidental voyeurism, non-consensual mind reading, oblivious WWX, bamf   WWX, genius WWX, post-canon Fix-it, angst w happy ending, LQR tries)
the soft animal of your body by howodd5ever (M, 21k, wangxian, Post-Canon, Getting Together, WWX has feelings about having a body, sort of a case fic, a little bit of epistolary goodness, graphic descriptions of wounds, Feelings About Death, WWX gets seriously injured, quoting chinese poetry at each other as a love language, Art Embedded, wound-tending as an act of love, Bathing/Washing, the mortifying ordeal of being asked to stay, Sharing a Bed, Finding home, WWX's canonical alcohol abuse makes an appearance a bit)
my age has never made me wise by idrilka (E, 63k, wangxian, Post-Canon, Part-epistolary, Mutual Pining, Getting Together, Marriage Proposal, Homecoming, One Brain Cell WWX Strikes Again)

12. ITMF like, historical perspectives. Like people in modern times talking about/teaching about/learning about LWG, WWX, and possibly others as historical figures
Historical Precedents for the Concept of Time Travel and Transmigration by meyari (G, 21k, wangxian, Fluff and Crack, dubious academic writing, Historical Research, it's practically its own character in this, vague college setting, Modern, Good YZY, Good Person SS, Reincarnation) It's the second part of a series, the first one takes place in canon era, and the second one is about modern Wei Ying researching about historical Wei Wuxian for his thesis! I recommend reading the first part first (or at least looking at the premise) for much-needed context, and also because it's so good!
DID YILING LAOZU REALLY EXIST???: a Thread [1/?] by el_em_en_oh_pee (G, 6k, wangxian, Academia AU, Social Media, Research, Cartographic Mishaps, HOW IS CARTOGRAPHIC MISHAPS AN ESTALISHED TAG. NO HAPS WERE MISSED HERE I ASSURE U, Folklore, LJY's Hot Takes, Procrastinating Your Dissertation Proposal By Writing A 104-Tweet Thread: The Lan Jingyi Story, Mixed Media, POV Outsider, this is kind of an AU - Modern and kind of not???, it's a modern academic/researchy exploration of canon lol) it's AMAZING
For 12, there's also the one where Wangxian are majoring in cultivation in University and there's a talk about the meaning of Hanguang-jun compositions with several one liner "titles" like fried watermelon rinds are terrible or something like that. Can't mine it on my AO3 history but it's there, I know it's there!
🔒 Night of the Living History (an edutainment special!) by Aerlalaith (T, 51k, wangxian, Modern with Magic, Workplace Relationship, Fluff and Humor, Museums, living history, the author's feelings about, the edutainment industry, museum workers, Some Plot, Slice of Life, Injury, a minor haunting, the stakes are low, unless you're on the museum board i guess, WWX does not get an employee discount)

13. Hi! For the next ITMF, could anyone recommend wangxian fics that also feature LWJ & JC not getting along/being hostile toward each other? I'm talking like anything from them having disagreements to physically fighting to just outright hating each other.
Untitled tumblr fic where LWJ punches JC in the face (sharing my reblog as writer seems to have deleted their blog & I can't find it on their Ao3)
the only way out by cafecliche (T, 12k, wangxian, JC & WWX, JC & LWJ, Post-Canon, this is one part character study, one part comedy of errors, and one part fix-it, WWX is a people pleaser in this essay I will, my event planning experience rearing its head again, Podfic Available)
Wei Wuxian’s Kidnapping Back and Forth Farce (Starring Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji) by misscam (M, 5k, wangxian, JC & WWX, Humor, Switching)
some good mistakes by Lise (T, 18k, WangXian, JC & WWX, JC & LWJ, Road Trips, (terrible road trips), Post-Canon, Rescue Missions, Hurt/Comfort, ish, Awkward Conversations, POV JC, JC & WWX Reconciliation, (ish they’re working on it)) should be noted that the Wangxian is background and the primary focus is on LWJ and Jiang Cheng having lots of emotions coming out sideways at each other

15. For the next ITMF, are there any fics where Lan Wangji comes to terms/wrestles with his darker sexual desires?
Come Back to Gusu… by AitchNKay (E, 90k, wangxian, WIP, Major Character Death, Fluff and Smut, Drama & Romance, Angst, Fix-It, Canon Compliant, Anal Sex, BL,, Switching, Bottom LWJ) Currently less than halfway through this one & it's a WIP so not sure how it goes, but has scenes of LWJ worrying about if his desires are too fucked up

16. Hi! ITMF your favourite recommendations with LWJ being petty and pouty (maybe bratty too?) - modern AUs and modern with magic are preferred. Thank you <3

Overwhelming Enthusiasm by Shadaras

Overwhelming Enthusiasm
by Shadaras (@shadaras)
M, 1k, Wangxian
Part of the MDZS Casefic Exchange
Summary: When the library’s alarms went off, Lan Qiren wearily expected to arrive to find an apologetic Wei Wuxian—possibly with one of the young disciples who looked up to him—explaining that No really I didn’t mean to touch that, I’m so sorry, let me reset that for you. Kay's comment: This was actually really funny, though I would give it a light gore warning. Really enjoyed it and the flavour of a good uncle Lan Qiren who has considerably warmed up to Wei Wuxian post-canon. Excerpt: “Shufu.” Lan Wangji let out a long breath. “A creature attracted to Yang energy appeared unexpectedly. We may have, ah. Overfed it. Until it burst.” There was a wealth of understatement in Lan Wangji’s words. Lan Qiren stared at the lattice-worked carvings that edged the library’s ceiling and attempted not to imagine the sequence of events. Or how Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian had ‘overfed’ such a beast. “I see,” he said neutrally. “Have you identified the source of this creature? I’m surprised it could appear within the wards.” “I think it snuck in with us,” Wei Wuxian admitted. “There aren’t any obvious holes in the wards, and I don’t think it manifested from any texts in here, though admittedly I haven’t had time to check yet. Also, um, you can turn around? If that would help.”
pov lan qiren, post-canon, canon era, blood and gore, aftermath of violence, coitus interruptus, good uncle lan qiren, nerd wei wuxian family feels, slice of life, everyday means everyday

Lan Qiren really is the most tragic character of mdzs imagine taking care of your dearly beloved 2 nephews who are so good and attentive and the talk of the cultivation world and so successful that you are so proud of them even though the war took so much from them and then suddenly they both say uncle can I have a little rebellion and you say hmm I guess so long as it's just a little and it's not falling in love with an evil murderer the same way your father did. And then they both fall in love with evil murderers.

The Twin Jades
dude sometimes I just come across such bad meta. it's even worse if it starts off good and turns bad.
Good Meta Points:
• The Lans really love younger child Wangji (no pets allowed, but wangji can have them. Wangji wants lotus pod seeds and gets them etc.)
• Instead of giving agency to his actions and thoughts, they think he's being influenced or corrupted by others to act in such ways (especially Lan Qiren.)
Bad Meta Points
• Lan Wangji is spoilt, similar to Nie Huaisang or Jin Zixuan.
• Gets the lowest punishment at all times (pfft.)
• "I get it you waited 13 years but you fucked off into the sunset with your husband leaving your emotionally unstable brother and duties"
• "Good to see people talking about Lan Wangji's flaws" - mentions him being spoilt and demanding instead of his actual flaws.
Like... you cannot seriously point out how he gets to have rabbits as a point of him being spoilt. Lan Wangji has made like one error in his life in his studies. He's assigned himself punishment for stuff that wasn't even done by will (coughs, wwx). He's made his decisions and lived with the consequences.
Despite what you say, Lan Xichen isn't a terrible brother to Wangji. Neither is Lan Wangji a selfish brother.
Sibling relationships are complex, and between two individuals with their own set of values. Lan Wangji is totally righteous, even more than Nie Mingjue. He can't stand exaggerated, political loopholes and unrighteous acts. He does what he can do, working on the ground level.
Lan Xichen isn't Lan Wangji. He knows the world is filled with corrupted people, and challenging each and every one of them would lead to your own devastation (read: Wei Wuxian's biography). Thus, he tries extending his sympathy to all, and draws conclusions that allow the least possible damage. He does think Lan Wangji made a dire mistake with Wei Wuxian, because if not, he will have to face the fact that the world punished his brother for his righteousness and it would shatter his whole foundation (like it does).
But despite that, both of them share similarities. They both want the better of the world. Lan Wangji is brave enough to challenge the whole foundation of the cultivation world. Lan Xichen is brave enough to lay down peace even when it's so painfully obvious there's no option of it.
Lan Wangji trusts his brother enough to bring Wei Wuxian back to Cloud Recesses after getting stabbed at Jin Tower. Lan Xichen lives up to this trust and helps them investigate the matter. Lan Wangji even assures Wei Wuxian that his brother would not stand for Jin Guangyao if his crimes were true.
See, you don't have to completely have the same sort of sets of beliefs to be siblings. Sibling relationships are complex. Both these brothers know each other, their strengths and their weaknesses well. They may be exasperated at each other's insistence, yet they are well aware that they both have to walk their own paths.
Lan Xichen could never take away Lan Wangji's pain or fix him. Neither can Lan Wangji fix Lan Xichen.
But both of them will always have each other's backs. They are each other's families. Each other's brothers for life.
But at the same time, they have each their own paths to walk. People need to understand that it's not about a lack of sense of responsibility on Lan Wangji's side, but the realization that if he went back home, he may lose Wei Wuxian again. His uncle wants to take him back, lecture him and lock him into seclusion. His uncle wouldn't accept his proposal to be married to Wei Wuxian.
He doesn't give his uncle the chance to "accept" or not.
And he literally returns three months later.
I can't help but feel that those who say he was selfish do not have siblings. Or have bad sibling relationships. I'd say Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen have a perfectly good relationship if despite their differences, their terrible parentage, their opposing personalities, the roles they both played in each other's life (with Lan Xichen being sworn brothers to Jin Guangyao who played a major role in Wei Wuxian's fall, and Lan Wangji being Wei Wuxian's husband, who in turn, set the case back onto Jin Guangyao, thus hurting Lan Xichen), the things they couldn't help each other out of, but yet, they do trust each other and love each other.
And I trust that Lan Xichen will one day figure stuff out. There's a lyric in this MDZS song called unfettered. It is like:
The past is akin to dew in the morning. Even if it can be comprehended, it lays under layers and layers of fog.
In the end, hatred, love, resentment, debts and regrets all come to pass.
Just like how Lan Wangji is not his father, Lan Xichen will also not be his father. I don't think both of them had hurtful intentions towards the other at any point.
It's not like "Yunmeng bros" where JC intentionally wishes to cause pain to Wei Wuxian. It's not like the Nie bros, where NMJ has to be super over-protective of Huaisang.
It's just two siblings with their own lives choosing to be with each other, in happiness and in grief (mostly in grief uhm) in a terrible world where the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

💕Happy Valentines Day! Heaven Officials Blessing or MDZS? 💕
Jin Ling has had it.
He loves his parents. He loves Uncle Wanyin. But they're all busy training for their own competitions and they've stuck him the Nie Huaisang as his coach, which he really thought was a joke up until the first practice. This is his first year competing as a senior skater and this is the best they can do? Come on.
"This is shit. Why did my old coach have to retire? I hate this," he complains to Jingyi.
"At least Lan Qiren isn't your coach," he points out.
He pauses, considering. "I guess it could be worse."
Poor Sizhui, honestly. Jingyi at least gives as good as he gets.
It's not like anyone can say anything about his effectiveness, with Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen fighting each other for the top spot every year. He's glad that Uncle Wanyin pair skates with his mom because he feels like the two of them on the ice would end in bloodshed. They hate each other for some reason that no one has ever bothered to explain to him.
"Why are you mad about Nie Huaisang anyway?" Jingyi asks. "He placed really well until he retired, and his footwork is great, unlike yours."
"Shut up about my footwork," he says automatically. "He's annoying, and I hate his choreography, it doesn't work for me at all. Screw this. I'm going to go to my uncle's and make him train me. It's not like he's doing anything anyway."
"Um, Jiang Wanyin is very busy practicing which is why you're with Nie Huaisang in the first place," Jingyi points out.
Jin Ling rolls his eyes. "Obviously I'm not talking about him."
"Mo Xuanyu doesn't even skate? And Meng Yao never even placed, which is why he's a manager," he continues.
"Uncle Yao had his own reasons for not placing," he says defensively, "but no, obviously not them either, are you being deliberately obtuse?"
"Are you?" Jingyi pokes him in the side. "Do you have another uncle?"
He has to be joking. "Yes? Obviously? I'm going to fly to Uncle Wuxian's and make him do it instead."
"Who?" he blinks.
Unbelievable. "My uncle? My mother's brother? Wei Wuxian?"
Jingyi's jaw drops before it snaps shut and then he's screeching, "YOUR UNCLE IS WEI WUXIAN? Like, the only person to ever beat out the Lan brothers Wei Wuxian, the one who won gold in the Grand Prix Final three years in a row and then disappeared into smoke Wei Wuxian?"
This is ridiculous. "He didn't disappear into smoke, he just moved to the coast. I don't know why you're acting surprised by this, I visit him every summer."
"You said you were going to visit your uncle in the summer!" Jingyi says accusingly.
Jin Ling blinks. "Yeah? I was."
Jingyi mimes strangling him then says, "Okay, you know what, we'll put that aside for right now. I fully support your decision to go and harass Wei Wuxian, who is apparently your uncle, and I'm coming with you."
"You are not, Lan Qiren would kill me," Jin Ling says, but Jingyi clearly isn't listening to him.

mdzs midnight thoughts
lan wangji does not know that his forehead ribbon truly was askew the second time wei wuxian pointed it out, now does he
as i’ve mentioned before, lan wangji also does not know that wei wuxian had alike scars in his back as a punishment for having saved him
lan sizhui and the rest of the juniors have no idea about the story hanguang-jun and senior wei had together. if they saw the dire situation where they screamed at each other and fought, they’d be really shocked, because: seriously, these two men are so goddamn shamelessly affectionate in a daily basis, how could they ever had conflicts?
jiang yanli, jin zixuan, wei wuxian and the wens’ deaths were basically in the same couple of days. none of them actually know that besides wei wuxian. jiang yanli and the wens think they’ve died to save wei wuxian, but in the end it just spared him some more time. he died not long after anyway.
no one despite lan xichen has any idea why lan wangji was so interested in bunnies out of a sudden, right? he just one day appeared with a ton and they just thought, ‘oh yea, it’s hanguang-jun, we’ve got him covered’
if wei wuxian’s mother saw how much her boy tormented lan qiren and the lan clan in general, from what her reputation precedes, she’d possibly smile proudly
everyone still thinks wei wuxian was the preferred ‘son’ instead of jiang cheng. they think he’s got a privileged childhood for living with the jiangs being treated not as a servant, but as part of the family! they dont know everything he’s been through in that goddamn fucking environment!!
perhaps meng yao would’ve been more empathic towards wei wuxian if he actually got to know his tragic backstory in the streets and with the jiangs. maybe if he got to know him better, before the sunshot campaign events. they were treated unfairly in resembling points, weren’t they, after all?
nie huaisang and wen qing would be like brother and sister if they were to know each other. they never did. in fact, wen qing wasn’t spoken about or to enough.
mentioning the public eye again, for them it’s like wei wuxian was the dishonest and devilish son of the two most famous, righteous rogue cultivators of their age. and considering madam lan’s past actions, lan wangji is the son of a murderer. historically ironic.
wei wuxian is part of jin ling’s family three times. one as himself (martial uncle), second as being in the body of mo xuanyu (biologically an uncle) and third as being the husband of lan wangji, lan xichen’s brother, who’s sworn brother with his uncle (a very distant relative, but a relative likewise, especially since being sworn brothers is such an intimate thing there).
the lan disciples simply saw hanguang-jun, the epitome of righteousness and the king of blank expressions, pick a random gay demonic cultivator one day and let him tag along on his adventures only for them to get married later because, yeah, that’s the yiling patriarch, in fact, why nobody told me my idol had a situationship with the biggest badass villain in history??
from somewhere within, mo xuanyu is oddly satisfied for seeing wei wuxian getting a proper revenge for him and a bunch of other stuff, beyond having very gay sex with the hanguang-jun — can you imagine?! he must think that at least his body served for a good cause!!!
