Sweden saying they'll vote against allowing the use of Catalan, Basque and Galician in the European Union Parliament because "there's lots of minority languages and we can't allow them all" is so funny because CATALAN HAS MORE SPEAKERS THAN SWEDISH
Catalan is the 13th most spoken language in the EU. It has more than 10 million speakers, which means it has more speakers than other languages that are already official EU languages like Maltese (530,000), Estonian (1.2 million), Latvian (1.5 million), Irish (1.6 million), Slovene (2.5 million), Lithuanian (3 million), Slovak (5 million), Finnish (5.8 million), Danish (6 million), Swedish (10 million), and Bulgarian (10 million).
Neither Galician (3 million) nor Basque (750,000) would still be the least spoken languages to be allowed in the EU representative bodies.
But even if any of them did, so what? Why do speakers of smaller languages deserve less rights than those of bigger languages? How are we supposed to feel represented by the EU Parliament when our representatives aren't even allowed to speak our language, but the dominant groups can speak theirs?
It all comes down to the hatred of language/cultural diversity and the belief that it's an inconvenience, that only the languages of independent countries have any kind of value while the rest should be killed off. After all, isn't that what Sweden has been trying to do to the indigenous Sami people for centuries?

Swedish help needed! (again)
Hi, I'm asking for the help of Swedes (or people learning Swedish) again. I'm planning to go on a roadtrip to Sweden and Norway this summer and I'd love to hear:
your favourite places in Sweden or any place you'd want to visit (we'll go as far north as Skuleskogens nationalpark/Östersund)
your favourite Swedish foods. I'm talking sweets, desserts, (non-alcoholic) drinks, meals, bread... anything (preferably if it has a vegan alternative)
just anything you love about Sweden... anything Swedish I should try?
(I'm also trying to come up with a list of books I could potentially buy so if you have any favourites, let me know!)
We'll be travelling with my boyfriend's parents. They have never been to Sweden, they love nature and I'd love it if we could keep the trip as low-cost as possible while also letting them experience SwedenTM.
Oh and we'll be in the Östersund-Åre area on Midsommar! I would LOVE to hear any suggestions on what we could do to for Midsommar. (I'm already planning stopping by at some village for Midsommarfest but in case I'm too scared to go, what could we do or eat to celebrate it?)
Thanks to everyone!
p.s. I know a lot of people have suggested things already, but ideally I'm looking for food that can be bought in supermarkets, generally nice places in the nature and specific places to see (if you like a town, tell me why! Why should I go there, what should I see?)

Hej Nordiska vänner and everybody
There is a thing called Runeberg.org that is like Project Gutenberg, but focusing on Nordic texts. They have scans of old books, from which a computer has extracted the text, and that automatic text needs to be proofread and corrected to match the scanned page.
Its a lot of stuff in Swedish but also plenty other languages too (Danish and Norwegian and Finnish, but also German, French, English, Latin...)
So if you wanna do some volunteer good work in the world you can help out with the proofreading. It's all done in the browser, I've been doing it on the phone, so it really doesn't take anything special.
Some stuff is in blackletter, which can be hard to read if youre not used to it, but there's also stuff in more modern fonts.
Here are the instructions in how to do it:
I'm currently proofreading a Finnish translation of Danish stories from the 1800s. You can arrange the titles according to language, so you can find the ones you can read.
There are at least a couple of "English-speaking person travels in Sweden and describes what's there" -books that are in English in the time period I looked at.

Random fact about Sweden no 1.
When Swedes pull off a successful April Fools joke, they don't just shout "april fools!" and leave it there. Instead they go into a full on taunt. It goes:
April, april
Din dumma sill
Jag kan lura dig vart jag vill!
Which rhymes nicely, and translates to "april, april, you stupid herring, I can trick you [to go] wherever I like!"
Then they bask in the joy of "skadeglädje", which means the happiness one experiences because of the misfortune of others. 😈

This Friday, the 30th of May, is Walpurgis Night! (Valborgsmässoafton, or simply Valborg, in Swedish). Walpurgis Night is celebrated in several European countries. It is a celebration of Saint Walpurga, but in Sweden it is, before anything else, a celebration of the arrival of spring. It is traditionally celebrated by gathering around huge bonfires. At the oldest universities in Sweden, a lot of more or less local Valborg traditions take place.
One tradition is that the student choirs gather before the bonfire is lit to sing songs celebrating spring. Längtan till landet, (longing for the countryside), is perhaps the most iconic one. It was written as a poem in 1838 by Herman Sätherberg, and arranged for a male choir in 1839 by Otto Lindblad. The song is often referred to by it's initial lyrics, "Vintern rasat" (Winter has been raging). The lyrics describe the snow melting away, to give way to spring and summer.
Although the song is traditionally sung by a male choir, here is an example of a version with a female student choir from the university of Lund, one of the oldest in Europe. The singers are, as is customary, wearing their student caps from their graduation from gymnasiet.

So i've just started studying swedish for an exchange i might be able to do in one year, and i'm looking for stuff to read/watch/listen to in swedish, outside of those resources that are traditionally for language learners. It doesn't matter what level it is; in the worst of cases, it will give me something to look forward to understanding. So i'm asking all swedish speakers who happen to see this:
Is there any book, or show, or youtube channel, or podcast, or media in general that's in swedish and that you'd recommend to me?
I'd be interested in about anything, but here are some possible subjects (anything outside of them is fine too):
History
Food
Gaming content (e.g. let's players)
Science (incl. math and computer science)
Fantasy stuff
Sci-fi
Roleplaying (e.g. DnD)
Knitting, crocheting, etc.
Art, drawing, etc.
Hopefully this won't disappear in the void of tumblr, and thanks a lot to anyone who answers!

In less than a month I'll be leaving to Sweden for a 4-month exchange program and I'm making a bucketlist of all the things I want to do and all the places I want to visit.
Does anyone have any recommendations/ideas?
