Every now and then I remember that Malbolge exists and I get to spend the better part of an hour cry-laughing at the world’s worst programming language
Tumblr media
already starting off strong, but it gets worse
Tumblr media
Wow! Sounds easy and intuitive to use! What’s the “crazy operation” you ask? We’ll get to that later. For now let’s see what a program in this language looks like :)
Tumblr media
Thanks! I hate it!
Tumblr media
it’s so difficult to work with that the first program was written by another brute force search program
Tumblr media
mmmmm delicious base-3 arithmetic, what could go wrong? (For reference, that means this program forgoes the usual “0/1″ values of binary code in favor of a much more fun “0/1/2″ set of values)
Tumblr media
ah.
Tumblr media
Here’s how the language actually figures out what to do. It’s got 8 “simple” commands that can be executed easily by *checks notes* running the code itself through the modulo operation and taking the result.
Tumblr media
As a bonus, on top of all that every single character in your code will now alter what every single other character does. So I hope you’re alright with cracking a cipher every time you add a new letter to your program!
Tumblr media
oh god oh fuck.
Tumblr media
behold, Malbolge’s primary arithmetic operation and what you’ll be using for most of your math while programming with it :)
This looks specifically designed to be the least logical math operation you could make, and knowing what the rest of Malbolge is I’d wager that’s precisely what happened. I never want to ever use this and it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever seen.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbolge
Anyways here’s the wiki page if you wanna read through it more deeply, I’m gonna sit here holding in my laughter staring at the hello world program again.

I'm trying to debug a fairly subtle syntax error in a customer inventory report, and out of sheer morbid curiosity I decided to see what my SQL syntax checker's shiny new "Fix Syntax With AI" feature had to say about it.
After "thinking" about it for nearly a full minute, it produced the following:
SELECT SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION SELECT COUNT(id) FROM customers WHERE customers.deleted = 0 AND customers.id = NULL UNION
I suspect my day job isn't in peril any time soon.

Thinking about how dca would always feel incomplete. How tech always gets old and impractical and needs to be upgraded again and again and again, because the world around is changing all the time but they don't.
You also change.
They feel a weird combination of pride and jealousy. You change on your own. You, a human being, something so fragile and breakable in their eyes, can change however you want. Whenever you want.
It's in your nature.
They, on the other hand, are created by your folk's hands. Their only nature is to obey those hands. To rust until you say otherwise.
Do you even realise how much unpronounced power you have over someone like them? They think you don't.
Yes, they're made to be stronger. Maybe more durable in some ways. If anything, something like them may kill the humanity one day.
But then they'll rust. But not in a physical sense of this word.
The world around them will change. But they will stay the same.
Because unlike you, something that they deem to be as fascinating as it is terrifying,
they cannot adapt.

Marrying Carter in Harvest Moon DS Cute! (North American version)
oh… sorry no not the archaeologist, i mean Pastor Carter from Mineral Town!
(or is it Pastor Curdy….?)
Tumblr media
teeechnically his descendant, and it causes a game over… but this is the only time we’ve been able to marry him right?
so in the girl version of HMDS, there’s two “secret” Mineral Town bachelors that you can marry by talking to them enough times on the phone. one is Mason, the guy who runs May’s Tailoring… but the second, Pastor Carter, is a bit more obscure…
i couldn’t find them uploaded anywhere so here are his 2nd* thru 10th conversations+his proposal+proposal rejection in english! if you want to see it on youtube instead here you go
*i failed to record the first conversation when it happened, and there’s no way in hell i’m resetting my whole game again (…yet), so…just know the first one was like “oh you want to talk? what should we talk about…….. …… ….. …. i can’t think of anything. well see ya………” extremely riveting stuff
he’s so obscure that i didn’t even realize that he was a bachelor until i found out about the mechanic from this japanese wiki!! (here’s an archive link to the page on him in case the page doesn’t work) all i did was test whether it worked in english since i couldn’t find any english info at all mentioning it. i’m sure others have found him… right……..
in case the links above don’t work, a small guide to holy matrimony below the cut since i can’t find one in english
it works essentially the same as the Mason marriage (so it’s just a game over, sadly…), and the steps are pretty tedious and counterintuitive, so you’re unlikely to just stumble across it… but you too can get a priest to break his vow of celibacy for you or whatever!
you will need:
at least 2,050,000 G
20 cursed tools/accessories
if you really don’t want to dig up 20 cursed things you can substitute 100x “remove a cursed tool/accessory” for blessing a cursed tool…
but, including all the cursed tools and accessories, there’s only 16… which means you will need to go dig up 4 duplicate cursed accessories using this method! yay!!! extremely pointless since you can’t sell blessed accessories until after marriage in DS for girl (at which point you can’t trigger pastor carter’s proposal)
you unlock a conversation with cardi when you spend at least 205,000 G. which means the quickest thing to do is to order removal of a cursed item five times, then bless 2 cursed items.
**be careful when blessing accessories to only equip one at a time!!! if you equip a stack of duplicate accessories, blessing that stack destroys the duplicates!!!! :( so just take 1 out of the stack and equip it!!!**
you also can’t unlock more conversations until you’ve seen the one you unlocked, so like even if you spend a million G you’ll just unlock one conversation, and you’ll need to finish that conversation and then spend 205,000 G to unlock the next one…yeah….
on the tenth conversation he abruptly reveals that he’s fallen in love with you and asks you to marry him! it ends your game, but….! on the bright side, it ends your game!!! you’re finally free from Hell Simulator!!!!

Look I don't hate C you can write good code in C if you try and I understand the reasons for its popularity but so many people who don't know shit about C give insane made up reasons for why C is good. C is like if after world war 2 everyone decided to pattern every single gun on the sten because it was really easy to make. And now people retroactively were like actually the sten is the original gun and it's good because it interacts very closely with the bullet and has fewer moving parts. This is nothing, the sten is like that because it's cheap as fuck and when it breaks you can fix it in a burned out French cottage with some sheet metal and a rock and a cigarette.
