Adaptation

I'm reading Itchy, Tasty, Alex Laniel's collage of interviews of various Capcom luminaries that produced installements of the Resident Evil series, and the explainer for the laughably cringe dialog in the first few entries is a bit of an eye-opener.

It makes sense, too. Prior to Resi, people looked to Capcom for action games, not for anything narratively involved. Once Shinji Mikami got involved and a loose successor to the Famicom's Sweet Home was put on the slate, the main focus was on creating a loose and amplified pastiche of American horror, which is exactly why you've got things like female Delta Force operators hobnobbing it with eighteen year-old coquettish ingénues in the context of a team that isn't SWAT, but that effectively functions just like a SWAT team - all because Capcom wanted to shoehorn the word "stars" as a Cool Acronym.

From there fall the Jill Sandwiches, the Masters of Unlocking, the heroically brandishing a pistol while saying you were going to solve a problem with this - all because Mikami and co. needed the English to be at a level you'd expect out of someone whose command of Shakespeare's idiom is just one tick above Picotaro's PPAP earworm. Add to that Capcom having precisely no VO budget at the time, and literally whisking DJs and visiting missionnaries off of Tokyo's streets with promises of a quick cash-out if they just crowded a sound booth with a bunch of other Caucasoid strangers and hammed it up with zero context.

We've obviously made strides since then, but Leon Kennedy's cheesiness remains observable in the Resident Evil 4 remake - tempered here with a few decades' worth of added VO and English adaptation expertise.

I'm 15 today. Mum said having enough Septims to buy dinner after buying this book was a gift enough. Oh, how much disdain I hold for you, mum.

School was good today, didn't talk to anyone apart from Laniel. Teacher says my words and spelling are getting real good.
