Maxfield Parrish :: The Lantern Bearers, 1908; oil on canvas. | Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas
American illustrator Maxfield Parrish originally created this painting to be reproduced in Collier’s magazine. The Lantern Bearers captures the sense of imagination, theatrical appeal, and luminous paint that made Parrish’s work so popular. He applied layers of pure pigment and varnish to create a brilliant depth of color. Figures dressed as clowns hang gold-hued lanterns, which glow against the blue night sky. While the six lanterns being handled by the clowns appear clearly, the nature of the four spheres in the distance is more ambiguous. Perhaps one of them is the moon...

I sometimes think that we stand at sunset (...) It may be that the night will close over us in the end, but I believe that morning will come again. Morning always grows again out of the darkness, though maybe not for the people who saw the sun go down. We are the Lantern Bearers, my friend; for us to keep something burning, to carry what light we can forward into the darkness and the wind.

Lantern Bearers lore In the Devil in the Details universe, lantern bearers are animals that have chosen to become guardians of their forest. Their main duty is to guide lost souls and beings out of the forest at night, which is what they carry the lanterns for. In rare circumstances they also guide those who wish to enter hidden forest dwellings that serve as sanctuaries for all beings, however only if they’re deemed trustworthy enough. These dwellings have a total ban on hunting and violence, meaning they are places where prey and predators get along. Those who do not follow those rules will be exiled, not only from the dwelling, but from the forest altogether. Their ashy and wispy appearance comes from the trials they have to pass in order to become a lantern bearer – no one knows what the trials really entail, but it is said they are trials of fire, darkness and light, and it is thought that one of the things an aspiring guardian needs to do is forge their own lantern. The lantern bearers themselves, however, can neither confirm nor deny this, as they are forbidden from speaking of what they went through. Sometimes the trials takes a single evening, sometimes they take many years, but strangely enough everyone who come out of them seem very peaceful whether they succeeded or not. Additionally, the lantern bearers have silvery markings to to signify which forest they guard. If you find yourself lost in the forest though, beware! There are also false lantern bearers who are nowhere near as benevolent as the guardians they imitate. These creatures disguise themselves in order to lure unlucky beings into danger and harm them. They may lure you off a cliff or into a mire, or they may even attack you themselves. Luckily, they aren’t as much of a problem ever since the peace treaty between humans and magic folks, because they know if they’re caught they will face the wrath of both groups. Still be careful, because if you wander into the wrong place all alone, you might be in terrible danger. Some tells that they are not real lantern bearers are markings that are off and do not represent the forest you’re in, or they might carry their lantern oddly. An example of this is a stag carrying the lantern in his antlers instead of in his mouth, or a bird carrying it on its back. The reason is that a true lantern bearer will always carry their light source in a way that lets it be extinguished as quickly as possible should they sense they themselves are in danger, and thus let them blend into the dark of the night. They may also speak to you, which is something a lantern bearer is strictly forbidden from doing outside of their dwellings or very special circumstances. Should you run into one, your best course of action is to try to attract the attention of a true lantern bearer, or trick the false one. Do under no circumstances let them know you know they aren’t what they pass themselves off as. With that said, there isn't too much of a need to worry. The real lantern bearers guard their forests vigilantly and are said to give off an unmistakeable aura of peace and tend to inspire awe, which is something the false ones struggle to imitate. Just be alert and you'll probably be fine.
As for how to know the marking of the forest you are in, usually you can find those markings in the closest library to the forest. Children are also taught what the local forest markings look like from a young age, and new residents are generally giving a pamphlet with such information upon moving in. OK THAT WAS LONG. if you got this far, thank you so much! :3 So, these were actually my January Patreon print and sticker rewards and aren’t really available anymore unless you join and gain access to the upcoming secret shop where I’ll list leftovers of old rewards. If you want to join, you can do so over at https://www.patreon.com/sleepimali ! And by the way, you’re always more than welcome to just hang around and look at the free stuff on there too 💛

Hello??? I am primarily a Batfam reader and every one of them has a tragic backstory "My parents got shot" this, "My dad taught me to be a silent killer" that, "My mom died of poisoning and my dad got killed by Captain Boomerang" whatever. Kyle literally just walks out of a club and gets handed superpowers?? You mean DC can just do that, no tragic backstory needed? This is great!

i think part of what made 'the lantern bearers' feel so much bleaker to me than the three previous entries in the dolphin ring cycle is that aquila is so alone. in all the previous books, the main characters go through plenty of traumatic experiences, but they generally have a companion to lean on - marcus and esca are sort of the classic example, but also alexios and cunorix and then hilarion, and justin and flavius. but aquila keeps getting set up for this kind of relationship, and then it gets taken away from him (or he pushes it away). his 'particular friend' felix leaves with the legions; brother ninnias is encountered only three times over the decades; brychan dies in battle; he is away from his wife for years at a time; his relationship with his son is awkward and strained, of his own fault. where the earlier protagonists are struggling with questions of honour and courage, aquila is facing such complete and utter emptiness. i am going to go and lie face down on my bed for a while.

"A gentle enemy!" Mull said jibingly. "No, I am not a gentle enemy. I loved your mother, my sister; that is all." They looked at each other in silence for a moment; and then—it was as though he laid down his weapons—Mull reached out and took the ring from Aquila. "Even after she—after that happened." "I once wagered her a pair of crimson slippers that she could not run faster than I," Aquila said with careful lightness. "She won, and I—never had the chance to pay my debt. You must tell her that I send her son back to her, in place of a pair of a pair of crimson slippers."
