I will only ever have ONE Lin got pregnant and had a kid au and that’s this one. 

where Lin ends up being the mother of the Avatar. 

I can detail the plot but do I have any of this written???

The Avatar is an oc named Lao. 

Aang had been sick for a while, his body just unable to keep going after the stress of living 160 plus years. 

They all saw it coming. It was weeks of him on bed rest. Days he hadn’t eaten anything. 

It was around that time that Pema started stepping in between Tenzin and Lin. 

Wedging them apart slightly day after day. 

Tenzin ended up breaking things off with Lin the day before Aang died 

So Lin recently broken up with and grieving her uncle Aang (the closest she ever had to a father figure even with his frequent traveling) that night she goes out to get hammered. 

Drown her sorrows and forget what was happening around her. 

At the bar is where she meets a handsome water tribe man and they end up hooking up 

(lmao would be so funny if it is still Tonraq and he was just in the city on business and gets caught up in Lin’s drunken bender night but he still fathers the avatar)

((in another version of this Au this is Amon but before he was the leader of the Equalists))

Lin wakes the next day half dressed in the hotel room with a major hangover and the stranger nowhere to be seen 

And she ends up pregnant. 

She keeps the kid half convinced it was Tenzins although she knows better. And she and Tenzin get back together under the assumption the baby is his while the little boy grows up. 

It becomes painfully obvious Tenzin is not the father. Lin’s features and the strong watertribe features blend perfectly for a handsome baby boy. 

First Lao developed water bending. Lin was a touch upset that she couldn't share her element with her son but she knows a few really good water benders and healers and is excited to see if he develops the ability to heal. 

Then Lin noticed he was earthbending as well when he was five. And she realizes who she's dealing with now. She cries that night because she knows Aang was reincarnated into her son now and that he was still with her even if in a different way. 

She tries to keep it a secret having heard about the white lotus trying to track down the avatar to hide them away in a camp somewhere in the south and the red lotus trying to find the avatar for their own nefarious reasons. 

she succeeded in hiding him for a few years but with Tenzin living with them he ends up finding out and reports to the White Lotus that he knows where the avatar is, Lao is about 7 years old Lin should be 40 if I understand the timeline right. 

(120ag, she would be 33 when Aang died in 153 ag, lao born at the end of that year makes him 7, now its 160 ag Tenzin would be 41 now and Pema would be 25 now. Yeah i think i’m on track)

Lin is pissed he would betray them and Tenzin feels he’s right because the red lotus is a real threat and they’re lucky they haven't found them yet, lin and Tenzin trying to fight them on their own would be bad news. 

The WL show up and there’s a fight because Lin doesn’t want them to take her boy but she loses and they take Lao to be trained and Lin and Tenzin break up for good this time and she hates him so much. 

(This would be a year Jinora is born) 

Lin tries but is Absolutely Not allowed to see or talk to Lao 

They don’t trust she wouldn’t try to take him back and they need to protect him from the red lotus who’s been an issue for a while (they’re right she would have probably tried to hide him in Zaofu if she got lao back and Suyin agreed to it but them not letting her see him is still bullshit)

Tenzin is tasked with keeping watch on Lin both to make sure she doesn’t do something drastic or try to find Lao. 

Lin falls into drinking and buries herself with work 

Katara tries to help by smuggling letters between Lao and Lin but as the years pass Laos letters start reading more like homework and not actually wanting to write to her. So they slowly stop sending any 

Then we get to the start of the series. 

Lao is 17, so its 170 ag 

since he was kidnapped and held in captivity he kinda has the same spirit and air problems as korra but not as a personality fault (though he does have lin’s stubbornness) but because that connection was basically severed when he lost his mom and was whisked away at a young age

Lao escapes Korra style (his animal companion is a shirshu tho, Akna) 

And makes it to the big city. 

He actually sees Korra, setting off to find her own in the big city and he helps her out of a tight spot with the triads. (Naga and Akna get along very well)

They both end up arrested and Lin realizes who he is but he has no idea who she is 

And she’s not going to push her luck in case the white lotus was still keeping tabs on her contact with him. So Tenzin gets Lao out of trouble and Lao is able to weasel Korra out with him. 

Lin goes and breaks down into sobs in a bathroom because that was her boy and he was almost all grown up and she missed everything with him. 

Tenzin refuses to tell Lao who his mother is because he needs to focus on his air bending training 

Lao keeps sneaking off trying to find any clues as to who his parents are. 

And since Lao has a shirshu he tries to track his mom down using scent but they can’t get a clear scent map since the letters are at least five years old and had to go through Katara but because he’s riding a Shirshu around the city he keeps running into Lin and her officers telling him to stop scaring the citizens!

Korra and Lao are fast friends and she joins the fire ferrets and he enjoys watching the matches. 

Korra teases him about not “being the leaf” and is always cracking jokes about Tenzin being so serious and is trying to be supportive but also is still Korra. 

Mako still gets run over by Asami 

The plot kinda progresses the same only with Lao as the avatar with the Krew. He watches the matches because they’re his friends and it gets him away from ATI for a bit. 

It’s not until after the pro bending games after Amon attacks and they're all fighting him, when Lin's making sure the kids are alright she cant help but hug him because she almost lost him again and that's when he realizes

but it's only a second and lin pulls back and Tenzin comes up and is asking if everyone is okay

so it's not addressed then.

probably a short scene where he’s talking with the Krew and is all

“How??? How is she my mother??? Woman clearly hates me!?” 

But it’s because the WL is like breathing down her neck about not distracting the avatar and is keeping an even closer eye on her incase she tries to take him back again.

The krew kinda agreed that there had to be a mistake or Lao was wrong, but it was weird she hugged him. But Tenzin confirms Lin is his mother. 

after that it would be a touch awkward at first. Lao was expecting a mother but found Lin… rough and cold. Literally the iron mother in the monkey experiment lmao

At least to start. Her walls come down some over the course of the show like they would naturally but he learns to pick up on the small signs she gives. 

And she learns who her sweet baby boy grew up to be.

Then the plot moves forward and we get to the sacrifice and taking down Amon. 

Amon, because he knows more from intercepting the communications in the city, makes Lin's de-bending public. The next day at city hall a big crowd, broadcasted it on the radio, to make sure Lao knows. He got his mother. 

Lao is Furious because she was supposed to be with the airbenders! 

The krew have to hold him back. And if he could enter the avatar state he would have. 

(I have my many hc for what happens to Lin in the four days to a week it takes for Iroh II to show up and help)

Korra still loses her bending, Lao loses the connection to the three elements like in the show. 

But Amon escapes, does not try to take his brother, but gets outta there and is rebuilding his Equalists in another city where he established they would all meet up in should the benders oppression prove unmanageable in the city. 

they all get to the south. Lao tries to pick a fight with Tenzin for leaving Lin behind and Lin’s just so tired, trying to recover and upset because she failed everyone and lost everything and now her son is suffering because of her. 

(Also sprinkle in my hc that the scars left damage to her eye so she can’t see out of that eye and she lost her seismic sense to make up for it. Depth perception is off, she gets startled easily when people come up on that side, and she keeps running her shoulder into door frames and corners on accident. And that since she lost her bending her sense of touch is numbed. Things don’t feel right and she sometimes grabs things with too much pressure to make up for it and has dropped several glasses, also my hc that Zolt gave lin the scars not Suyin /X/X/)

Then he and Korra go off into the snow on their own and he gets to meet with Aang and restores their bending 

(I also have my hc that Lin gets to see Aang again when the bending is restored and he thanks her for protecting the air kids and reminds her that he’s so proud of her and loves her so much T-T)

then it kinda fuzzes out because B2 is a bunch of love triangles he’s not involved in and origin story but he never loses connection with the other avatars because that was always a poor choice! Maybe he still needs to save Raava but the previous avatars are a part of her, she promised to preserve them so they come back with her. 

and in B3 he’s with the family! 

Suyin is PISSED she didn't know 

so Lao is getting to know his relatives and finding the new air benders.

she's not happy she can't manipulate him that well. (he's too much like lin)

He learns metal bending rather quickly (i mean look at his mom) and even starts to pick up on the seismic sense that lets people be truth seers. 

After the attack he realizes how dangerous this is and doesn’t want his mom in the line of fire again. So he and the krew sneak off. 

That Naga jumping at Lin scene But with a Naga AND Akna! 👀

Lin doing everything she can to find them 

Lin has to watch him fight the red lotus and get poisoned 

Then B4 happens where they don’t know where he is and they’re all worried. 

and Toph is upset Lin didn't tell her about Lao but understands and is all like "welcome to the family twinkle toes."

BUT imagine Amon comes back with an even bigger army of Equalists and had stolen or had his spies infiltrate that mech Kuvira made and then he controls it 

After the explosion Lao and Amon are in the middle of the city and Lao is stronger now, not That naive “half-baked avatar” he was in B1. 

Amon is stronger too and gets hits on Lao’s side to chi-block his bending but Lao falls into the avatar state and bloodbends Amon whos like Shook because It's most definitely not a full moon and he hasn't been bloodbent since he was a boy with his father.  

Lao is so angry with him as he sees the chaos and destruction of his city, remembering how sick Lin was and what Amon’s done. He may accidentally tear Amon’s organs apart within his body with the bloodbending. 

“How?” Amon would cough up chunks of his heart and lungs before collapsing to the street. 

Everyone is like “Do we arrest the Avatar for bloodbending now?” 

Korra and Asami still get together 

Mako is with Rina(oc) with his twins.

(My hc is that Mako gets with Rina around B2 and has the twins in B3 so with the time skip they’re like 3 almost 4 now? And Mako is PISSED that Wu is keeping him from his family 24/7 and then after the fight he’s injured and can't find his wife and kids, i have more posts with friends under Firecrackers but they have different timelines for it lmao /X/) 

I do like the Bolin/Opal ship. 

And I don’t have a love interest for Lao rn 

But after the series he lives with Lin in her house for a short time before getting an apartment and Lin gets her son back as well as basically adopting Mako Bolin and Asami 

UNOFFICIAL ending - He’s devastated when Lin’s killed a few years later in an altercation she shouldn’t have even been a part of but was called to the scene and Lao was a minute too late to get there. (she’s like almost 65ish)

Total Bending Abilities for Lao 

Water - Healing, bloodbending

Earth - Metal, seismic sense / truth seeing, (Lin also teaches him how to sculpt lmao)

Fire - Electricity, that cool flame blade 

Air - energy bending

Idk if you've done something like this yet (in fact, I'd be surprised if you haven't) but what pet names do you think the mk1 men would use for their s/o? Not sure why I just now thought of this, but it seems wholesome :)

Reiko isn't a fan of romantic pet names and would, instead, refer to his partner by their name or by something strong and intimidating such as "my blade"

Kenshi can be very romantic with his partner. He would most likely use the pet name in private with you. He would call you "honey"

Syzoth really loves his partner. They are his entire world and he wishes to convey that to you. He would use the Zaterran word for "destiny" or "soul" when referring to you

Havik takes the phrase "pet name" a bit too literally. He is not one to be affectionately romantic with his partner. Love is not part of him. He calls you his "little pet"

Quite conventional in what he calls you but it is not often Rain will use pet names. He prefers to just use your name. He will, at times, call you "little cloud"

Shang Tsung quite likes using pet names with his partner. He enjoys the added flare they bring. He calls you his "treasure"

Quan Chi loves using pet names with his lover. He finds them fun to use when taunting others. He shall call you his "precious elixir"

Tomas does not use pet names with you in public. He will refer to you by your name for majority of the time. However, in the bedroom, he calls you "princess/prince"

Raiden can be a bit bashful but also traditional when it comes to pet names. He truly values you and your relationship. He would most likely use a Chinese word for "my sweet" or "sweet one" when speaking with you

Kung Lao calls his partner "babe" or "baby". He loves to do so and will find every excuse in the book to call you by those titles

Bi-Han is not one for public use of pet names. It's a bit too...vulnerable for him. He also wants only your ears to hear the sweet things he calls you. To Bi-Han, you are his "heart"

General Shao is a fan of calling you by pet names but nothing too romantic. He finds those boring. He will refer to you as a temptress or little minx

Uses pet names fairly often with his partner. He likes the classical "babe" but also adds in "babydoll" and "baby cakes" into the mix as well

Liu Kang can be very sweet in the titles given to you. He prefers to call you "lover", "shining star" and "dearest one"

Kuai Liang will always call his lover "lotus". To him, that flower symbolizes growth even in adversity and resilience. He sees all of those traits in his partner

KENSHI. he is the type of guy who carves for physical touch - especially after the incident with his eyes, he’s more open to touch or being touched by you. the man puts his hands on the places he will kiss afterward, then, closes the gap between your bodies and smelling your scent as he puts kisses on you. he smirks when he hears the question though, not quite sure where it will go but answers anyway. his fingers pat your neck as he hugs you from behind, hands finding your abdomen as he whispers into your ears before kissing the back of your neck.

JOHNNY CAGE. he will laugh until you get furious, slapping his arm, saying how you want him to answer the question no more. he teases you a bit more, then, he finds you so cute that he watches how you try to avoid him. when he is done with the way you act around so sweetly, he joins you on the bed, caging you within his body as he begins to kiss your exposed knees. he says how he likes you entirely, no separating, yet, he adds when he reaches your lips.

this man is not one for open acts of affection Infront of others, these would be in private most likely. But when he's around you, behind closed doors, he's a real softy. He also gives me possessive vibes, so this inspired some. (Due to his closed off demeanor, this was by far the hardest to decipher.)

Kuai Liang

my heart, my love, little flame, baby, beauty, my queen, little dragon, my one, darling, firefly/dragonfly

Like his brother, he would keep open acts of affection to a minimum. Not because he's uncomfortable showing it, he would just rather keep those special moments between the two of you. Although, he is more than willing to show how much he loves you Infront of others.

Tomas Vrbada

Tomas would most likely be more open than his brothers, showing affection whenever he's in your presence. He definitely gives me the vibe that he would be very soft, gentle, and shy when using these with you however.

Liu Kang

Pet names, holding hands, and gentle hugs in public are the farthest he goes, he is respectful and would rather keep his private life well..private.

Raiden

Raiden would be much like Liu Kang and Tomas, showing only soft affection with a shy smile in public and keeping his full love for you hidden from prying eyes. Like Liu Kang, he is very respectful and would also worship his lover. If his love wanted his to show more affection in public? Consider it done, although expect a deep red to engulf his face in a rush of embarrassment if anyone (cough cough johnny) teases him on the matter.

Kenshi Takahashi

Kenshi is possessive, within limits, not overly so but you are his and his only. He would still prefer to keep it private, but if someone oversteps, he's pulling you close and calling you his.

Kung Lao

Kung Lao is a foodie, expect a lot of nicknames related to food. His cocky behavior shows in the nicknames he gives, giving you sarcastic and joking nicknames in public, causing a bit of banter between you two. In private he's letting you know you're his, in the softest way possible. He's very respectful of women in particular, he would never call you names to hurt your feelings, especially you being his special someone.

⛈️ Liu Kang doens’t get sick often, normally he get use his powers to burn whatever he has away

❤️‍🔥 Othertimes he’d just tough it out, either until it goes away, or until Kung Lao forces him to go to bed (and that’s when he’s sick sick)

⛈️ Raiden is a bit upset when he finds out how sick Liu kang is, and how he tried to ignore his physical health to train, but any lecture he has is going to have to wait

❤️‍🔥 Why? Because the moment Liu Kang sees him he starts blubbering, making grabby hands towards his Dada

⛈️ He’s tiny tiny too, feeling all sick and icky, he just wants to be babbied :(

❤️‍🔥 Raiden will put him into some padding, which makes Liu Kang very fussy

⛈️ He might feel icky and tiny, but he doesn’t need one!!! He’s big! He swears he’s big! >:(

❤️‍🔥 Raiden gently shushes him, saying it’s just a precaution, and lets Liu Kang throw a small tantrum before changing him

⛈️ Unfortunaly . . . Liu does end up needing it, which only makes a crying fit happen

🌟 Is a little more open to padding with cute designs on them, especially since Raiden has some for when he’s small

🌩 Gasped and almost became a bit excited when Raiden showed him one with tiny dragons on it, and those are the ones that Liu Kang uses the most

🌟 ^ It does help Liu Kang’s little fits about padding lessen, and Raiden didn’t know why he didn’t think of something dragon related earlier

🌩 Or, until Johnny made a small joke about it, and now Liu Kang’s crying in Raiden’s arms

🌟 Johnny gets sent to a timeout, which also causes him to regress, and now Raiden has two fussy little ones to take care of

🌩 Liu Kang upset because he was just getting more comfy with padding and even though Johnny’s joke was more about dragons, it was still about him using padding and he didn’t like it

Can we have 5 more headcanons for the "GAang's parents are swapped" AU? Specifically about Toph and her single, elderly dad Gyatso? That sounds absolutely *precious* and I want my fave to have a happy childhood! She deserves it, and more!!

I haven't talked that much about Toph and Gyatso Bei Fong here, simply because as the recipient of a happy childhood with a supportive parent, Tophs story just isn't as messed up and complicated. In canon, Lao and Poppy hide their daughter away and refuse to acknowledge she might be anything other than a delicate helpless widdle baby. The townspeople of Gaoling don't even know the Bei Fongs have a daughter. She is a secret, and they both are ashamed of her, and hyperprotecive.

Gyatso on the other hand, is like, hey, have you heard about my daughter? She taught herself to earthbend when the master I hired for her couldn't keep up with her talent! She's the Earth Rumble champion! She's so clever, and strong, and I love her so much! Everybody knows Gyatso Bei Fong has a daughter that he will not shut up about. They have met this little gremlin child. When she was little, and she had to make an appearance at social occasions, she used to say to people, "Dad says I have to say hi to everybody, and then I can go outside and throw rocks around, so hi. Also bye."

But Gyatso is not an infinitely indulgent parent. He thinks she needs to learn a whole bunch of things that are not nearly as much fun to learn as earthbending, such as manners and etiquette, but also the deeper way we treat people, that other people are just as human as she is, and just as deserving of respect and kindness, and yes, the servants too, especially the servants, because they work for you and do a lot of things for you, so it behooves you to recognize that and treat them as people who are helping you deserve. And yes Toph, the annoying boys in town are also human beings deserving of common human decency. This is not something his own family thought was worth teaching him, like many extremely wealthy noble families, he had to learn it on his own.

He also is a very cultured man, and he enjoys the finer things in life, and wants to bring that to his daughter, music, art, poetry, literature, philosophy. Some of it is easier than others, for example Toph is never going to appreciate a painting or a piece of ink calligraphy. And her tutors think he's absolutely batty for trying to teach her to write, but you know Gaoling is really close by the Si Wong desert, and thousands of years ago, before the cultural expantion from Ba Sing Se, the people in this area developed their own form of writing using clay tablets. Gyatso uses stone engravings, and teaches Toph to make her letters on clay, and he painstakingly copies out poems and stories on the clay tablets for her to feel and read. And of course he reads her poems and stories, and philosophy.

Gyatso's indulgence of his daughter and her interests only adds to his reputation as an eccentric. He doesn't mind, and neither does Toph.

And the Toph who grows up this way is a little more polite and better at teamwork, and a little less brash and a little less boastful. She doesn't need to brag because she knows she has nothing to prove.

Let me just drop my opinion on every monster hunter monster I’ve fought so far here now that it’s 12am oops

Apceros/Aptonoth- Underrated as far as herbivore fodder goes, they'll almost guarantee you one raw meat when you carve them, and really that's the only reason you would attack them.

Bullfango/Bulldrome/Kestodon/Rhenopolos- Charging monsters... I only like them better when they attack monsters too. Otherwise they have that nitpick I have with predators and prey ganging up on you for no reason.

Cephalos/Cephadrome- First sandshark, I'd accept them, but Genprey do the same stun-bite and are a lot less annoying about it

Feyline- I love them in every game but 3. I have no idea what is their DAMAGE in 3...

Genprey/Gendrome- Speaking of, an ok prey

Hornetaur- My experience stems from them biting my ankles in bonepiles, I don't appreciate their 'tude

Ioprey/Iodrome- Second-most boring prey

Kelbi/Anteka- Horns horns horns. It would be cool if a proper monster of some kind used those hard to track jumpswaitaminute

Melynx- Cute cats that are pretty dodgeable unless you're mid-fight

Mosswine- I like this guy- I think he's based off a yokai or something

Velociprey/Velocidrome- THE bird wyvern. Deceptively hard with their crowding- which puts them at the top for me.

Vespoid- Stun, stun, stun...

Basarios- What a cool guy on paper, has probably fathered more monster rigs than you think. I only like fighting him with hammer tho.

Diablos- Our favorite herbivore! I like the high damage to enforce dodging their slow and telegraphed moves

Gravios- Papa Basarios, I like him less though. Them and basarios have weird... flesh feet...

Gypceros/Yian Kut-Ku- I hate them both, but Gypceros narrowly wins because it's flash bang is an extra layer

Khezu- Low-Rank flesh BULLY.

Plesioth- I'm suffering stockholm syndrome for the meme, but there is no denying just how much their hipcheck makes them stand out alone, only fighting a more fair Deviljho hipcheck for dominance. Also, the only proper fish-wyvern for a while...

Rathalos- Flagship darling. Earlier games look like hell, though I appreciate his tail always dragging on the ground no matter what iteration you're fighting.

Rathian- The fairer Rathalos. Rise seems to have put more of her moveset into grounded Rathalos, which makes sense, though I wish she had more oomph outside of variants

Original Fatalis (Generations)- GU is the only game I barely fought them in. Outside of it's lore, the fight didn't seem much to write home about. Their variants on the other hand...

Kirin- Pony bastard. Despite everyone's claims, it seems like it always had a learnable method to it's madness like any other monster. I'm willing to wager the majority of it's grief stems from the small pool of electric monsters players have to worry about in the lategames

Lao-Shan Lung (GU)- Precious mountain baby. One of the first sieges, and first DPS races. I would probably have hated him if it wasn't for the fact his Generations bombtrack is pretty fun

Azure Rathalos- Did you ever want Rathalos to fly in the air more? Of course you do.

Silver Rathalos/Gold Rathian- Heavily dependant on game. I feel like I had the most fun running IG against their world variants, though

Black Diablos (World)- MHW:IB Diablos is crazy ok. I'm fine with it just constantly comboing into burrowing, because it encourages rare item usage in 5th Gen. It's dangerous sand waterfall trick in LR is something I actually WANT it to do in MR, because it'll stop it's combo

Blango/Blangonga- My friends are so tired of hearing me bring them up, but they are straight up the 'easy rajang' the series can use to replace him

Ceanataur/Shogun- Not fun to fight. His deviant, though...

Conga/Congalala- Hell YES. Only good monke, we need more fartmonkey. His apex was unexpectedly tough

Giaprey/Giadrome- The worst drome. I just... they have nothing.

Hermitaur/Damiyo- Now this fight is fun- It's a more engaging hard-shell basarios style fight with clear openings

Popo- Hey Tigrex...

Remobra- I hate them, but do I hate them more than rhenopolos? It's a hard tiebreaker.

Rajang/Furious- MH's favorite monkey. A fight that's tricky to learn, but a consistent rhythm when you understand it, similar to Deviljho. World is definitely one of the hardest variations, but I also think it raised new hunter's expectations of future Rajang a little too much.

Chameleos- Cool little guy. Shame about the item theft

Kushala Daora- Out of the Elder Trio, I like Kushala the most. Would I like fighting it before the IG? Eeeh, probably not.

Lunastra (World)- Pretty novas and flame effects, but an annoyance to deal with in-game. Her wingbeat fire attacks are neat, but World beat that as far as the special effects department goes

Teostra- A more involved Lunastra, but prior to Gen 5 he was a lava-camping asshole. I like his little blast-clicks.

Akantor/Ukanlos (Gen)- He's a uh, big guy alright. I'm kind of surprised at how basic his fight is- though I feel as though Tetsucabra and Zamtrios probably stole some of his stuff in hindsight

Tigrex- I just can't understand this fight, I know I won't either. I've at least figured out how to make them charge less, and how to tell if they're breaking out the crazy charges

Lavasioth- Cool fish, lava camper >:(

Nargacuga- This wyvern on the other hand- I got used to them, kind of. Phases are clear, and once you understand their openings and how they combo, the fights gradually get more smooth.

Yian Garuga- The only dangerous bird wyvern. I'd respect it's crown, but fuck em. I never liked that shoebill skeleton

Baggi/Great- My boy!!! A pretty blue, a pretty pompadour, and they aren't shy of putting you to sleep.

Giggi- Does a good job at scaring 3U first-timers

Jaggi/Jaggia/Great- I'm not impressed by base jaggi, but Jaggia and Great are pretty safe and easy to learn. I appreciate it when a Jaggi helps me carve faster, but the Jaggia can be little nuiscances

Ludroth/Royal- Water Jaggia. Royal's ok in his water fight, cool glowing eyes. Gets demoted to easier shoebill status past 3 :(

Uroktor/Agnaktor- I misname Agnaktor for Akantor all the time, god help us all. Another lava camper, so... (The hints of Najarala burrowing are here, though...)

Barioth- Apparently famously replaced Nargacuga. I like him less, because his tail swipe extends far enough to catch plesioth's hip-check

Barroth- First brute wyvern!!!! I like his lore more than I like his fight.

Deviljho (Gen)- Classic pickle. There's so much more involved with his gen fight, it unfortunately blows his World fight out of the water. Despite that, I still love new interpretations of the pickle fight

Gigginox- Now here's a gross wyvern fight. Drops babies down to join the fight and better mess with you, and has counters that don't narrow down to 'fuck you, lightning'

Gobul- For the original Nibelsnarf, his fight wasn't too involved.

Lagiacrus (3)- It's fight was so much more involved in the water! It has enough switchups that it doesn't become boring, unlike its land iteration.

Qurupeco- It's gimmick is okay, but if you strip the top layer of a 2-on-1 fight off, Qurupeco is kind of boring

Uragaan- No, I don't like this crimson chin. Will lava-camp on a dime

Alatreon (GU)- I ended up fighting them because I heard all the drama about their World variant. It wasn't really a fair fight; I came into the HR with MR armor, but it was fun to see all the moves they converted later in their original form.

Alatreon (World)- Speaking of drama... If I was playing World as it updated, I would probably have hated them as much as the rest of the fandom does. However, I bought World a solid year after it's updates ended, and I knew about his fight in the distant lategame. I had the advantage of quietly preparing a gearset for them, and ultimately found them pretty fun if not stressful on that DPS race after the hornbreaks. Conceptually its pretty interesting too, you can see every elemental elder dragon that bled into Alatreon's moveset, from Velkhana's ice beam to Kirin's thunder grids, it's all there to play I-Spy with. They had a good idea- the playerbase largely never cared for elemental damage over that affinity meta I'm so tired of, but in practice it was pretty horrible. Despite this- I still wish for a bigger elemental-focused meta in the future, or at least something to combat the hyperoffensive affinity/damage builds copypasted across every weapon.

Ceadeus- A slow, Lao-shen'y dps water fight. Such a cool whale monster, though it seems everyone agrees that they shine the most once you reach the sunken city in Area 3

Wroggi/Great- Tied for my favorite bird wyvern, just an angry little tree-frog with a good armorset

Arzuros/Lagombi- Mmm, Conga did it better. I do like the bear's silly honey steal, though

Duramboros- HHHhhhhhhhhhh Banbaro did better than you

Nibelsnarf- More interesting than Gobul, tbh. You're more likely to fish them up on a stun without retries, and the barrels are also easier to place against them. Miserable without items

Volvidon- Lagombi but it doesn't put you to sleep. Being annoying is at least engaging

Zinogre/Stygian- The fight I always feel like I'm on top of until I actually fight them. It's not that I never learned their timing, or have low element resist. I just feel like I end up making more mistakes than advantages whenever I fight them.

Amatsu (GU)- Absolute bonkers fight once they enrage. There's a lot of wiggling around before that, though..

Brachydios- No

Ivory Lagiacrus- The landstranded Lagi, without the water, it's moveset is unfortunately pretty basic....

Lucent Nargacuga (R)- I feel like it's 3U fight should be more engaging- once you figure out to watch it's eyes in Rise, you notice it's pretty close to a basic Narga fight until the tail gets powered-up

Savage Deviljho (World)- The dragonblight pool attack is really cool!!! He just doesn't feel like Jho without his deadly pins is all

Kecha Wacha- So begins the interesting starting bosses in 4U. There's a lot here that got used in Bishaten later, but I feel like Kecha wins out once he moves to the vines. Goes double the speed if you let them swing circles around you

Najarala- Snake! A cool gimmick with the sonic scales, good armor, and just a really neat skeleton never to be used again. I guess my only gripe is getting your footing back if they bump into you with that coiling trap

Nerscylla- Honestly, arguably one of my favorite monsters. She's so fast, always keeps to areas where she can speed around on the webbing, and you have the added bonus of trying to cut the webshots to knock her off-balance. All of that combined with those giant punishing mandibles of hers whenever she gets a KO on you makes her a really fun fight

Seltas- The first boss of 4U. I find him more interesting than his queen, but I'll admit his attacks are pretty basic vespoid-level attacks if he's not clawing at you

Seltas Queen- I would like them more if they just didn't look like... that? I like the tail, I like that she parties up with Seltas (and even kills them if she's low on health). But I don't like anything else about her design-wise, and her fight isn't much more interesting. If I wanted to get charged at with little thought, I'd rather fight Tigrex

Tetsucabra- Tetsu is.... okay. I have armor grinding fatigue, but their new attacks are appreciated. Their MR fight sucks though, I'm tired of charge-spamming monsters

Zamtrios- Swiss-army knife shark. There's a little too much to keep up with in their fight, but I'd rather fight them than Tetsu

Gore Magala/Chaotic- Hot damn. This baby can fit so much Frenzy and lore in them. A fight that forces you to plan carefully, but fight efficiently. Is heavily punishing of small mistakes in 4U- deals a little too much damage in rage than I'm comfortable with, but overall just a pretty solid fight (Ignoring those wing hitzones in LR...)

Shagaru Magala (GU)- I felt like they were impossible when I first fought them. A true formed Magala that really puts your focus to the test. Its hind legs are its only safespot, but that won't stop it from slamming you whenever you get too comfortable. Those + shaped blasts are still an attack I mention in other hunts

Raging Brachydios (World)- A flashy fight, but that's all Brachydios ever got going for them. I already didn't like brachydios, raging just gives you more things to rage about

Seregios- Love them! Its falcon-style talon and sweeping attacks are fun to hunt around, and it's speed is something Rise was in dire need of down the road. Now if I could just fight them outside of the desert, lol

Maccao- Another interesting take on the bird wyvern fight. I like its crazy kick-charges, though the attacks outside of those I'm not too enthusiastic about

Moofah- : )

Astalos/Boltreaver- A cool Fated 4 member! Of the four I unfortunately like Astalos the least (and I'm disappointed in his Rise fight being more like his HR than his MR fight...), but it remains a valuable member of its team. More interesting takes on bugs like this, please

Gammoth/Elderfrost- A simple fight initially, I like her MR fight more for having options where her safezones used to be. I don't think there's any way you could get closer to the hunts of prehistory than the Mammoth itself

Glavenus/Hellblade- There's no avoiding my bias for my favorite all-time monster next to Bazelgeuse. There's almost no real-world connections to really be found in this dinosaur, but I think that contributes to why I like them so much. It's just interesting to me how they balance out its breath attacks with that sharp tail, even having the ai pull feints based on your positioning with some attacks. Learning the safespots on those tail swings is one of the more cooler things to pick up

Mizutsune/Soulseer- A surprisingly fast fight, I appreciate Mizu's weasel war dances, lol. Like Nargacuga in that its fight is tricky to learn, but once you pick it up, you can come up with an answer to everything. Soulseer might be easier, but that parry mechanic is just very interesting, and a fun spin on the actual fighting moves rather than reskinning its element

Malfestio- Arguably the most interesting bird wyvern, though I'm willing to bet it's stolen from Hypnocatrice's kit. I like its little head turn around as a creative way to pounce you. I think it's only real failing is the jester aesthetic kind of getting in the way of a proper owl fight

Silverwind Nargacuga- A pretty interesting deviant, I just hate its guts lol

Rustrazor Ceanataur- I don't like Shogun, but this guy's ok. Mostly because he sharpens with Glavenus's skull and borrows their attacks, lol

Nakarkos- Bone octopus!! I wasn't impressed by their fight initially, but I really warmed up to it once I started fighting their MR version with the giant lasers and more interesting skeleton head trickery

Ahtal Ka- I love this bug. They combined the body of a praying mantis with the silkweaving of a caterpillar to make a fun mech fight where for once, the bug towers over you. All of this complete with a pretty gold carapace, and a lotus themed weakspot all culminating into the symbolism of the wheel on her back at the end is all very cool.

Valstrax (GU)- Holy Shit It's Mega-Latias. Jokes aside, I love how fast he is in generations. Like Narga and Mizu, it's all a matter of learning how to maneuver around that speed, and where all his tells and openings are at. Once you master his fight, the win feels all the better at the end

CG Valstrax/Risen (Rise)- Wirebugs? No problem. Valstrax wasn't the hero Rise asked for, but he was the hero they deserved. To bring back a monster not only faster than you in GU, but continue to remain faster than you in Rise, the fastest monster hunter game to date? Is really, really impressive to me. I mostly like all of the changes made to his bullet phases- they may be dodgeable, but Valstrax will use those evade openings to change to jet, charge, zoom around and generally outmaneuver you for slipping up. And unlike GU, you can't cheese the ambush with an area change, you HAVE to master the dive if you want to survive it solo. A dive that becomes reasonably harder to time when Valstrax continues to shoot at you from the sky in Risen form. He's just a very fun and solid elder fight, easily one of my favorites

Gajalaka- Would you believe me if I said these cats were at least more consistant than the felynes in 3? As long as you put yourself between the Gajas and the monster, they usually won't come up as a problem

Girros/Great- An interesting snake-lizard boss, though World can't fool me. There's a Royal Ludroth in there, and just like old RL, he's pretty easy to juke

Jagras/Great- I love their gluttony gimmicks. I think being a little more like Zamtrios could've made them more interesting. Maybe even incorporate some Congalala in there, where the food he eats determine statuses behind his bites.

Anjanath/Fulgur- A good rex! I like the cooling fins they have for when they get too hot, that little sit that they do when resting in Rise, and that fur covering their top half to make them more interesting than the average dinosaur

Bazelgeuse/Seething (World)- The best monster, I'm sorry I don't make the rules. As a fun fact- the exploding scales work like hardened sweat, so it's like just shedding is dangerous. Another weirdly improbable but loveable monster, I think one of my favorite aspects of its fight is just how much Seething throws its weight around to tackle you

Dodogama- A friend : )  a more interesting Jagras, as it stands currently

Jyuratodus- They made Lavasioth boring. How could you make Lavasioth more boring??? At least it's similar to a lungfish, I guess.

Kulu-Ya-Ku- Bird Up is the best Kulu. Whether it be eggs, pots, flintstone, FFXIV crystals, this guy's got it covered. My only wish is for Kulu to be more of a coward in later titles. It's an egg thief, it already has no honor

Legiana/Shrieking- A stylish, iceborne Rathalos (and maybe even a hint of Seregios). The regular fight is superior in my book, Shrieking flies a little too much and loves to roleplay Qurupeco in its spare time.

Odogaron/Ebony- The first of the garons, I love them. A dedicated corpse-eater that sacrificed any fur or scales for that tough meaty hide, I think they mesh quite perfectly in the veil. I just love how much they do those curving attacks, they're fun to dodge and punish

Paolumu/Nightshade- Ugly little bald wrinkly heads. Unfortunately Pukei and even their father Khezu wins me over more. Nightshade blowing the sleeping gas around is kind of neat, though. I don't think we see much of that outside of attacks like Rise Chameleos..

Pukei-Pukei/Coral- Speaking of, the more interesting not!khezu fight. I'm glad Pukei gets buffs based on the food he eats, though Coral wins me out on its moves in general.

Radobaan- Damn, they made Uragaan actually fun, and all they had to do was make him more fragile to partbreaks. I love how he's got a diablos skull on his back

Tzitzi-Ya-Ku- Diet gypceros but boring :(

Tobi-Kadachi/Viper- I actually don't like Tobi all that much compared to Odogaron. I guess it's just the stunspam

Vaal Hazak/Blackveil- Chefs kiss just a really cool elder dragon ok. Not only is it made with clear parts taken from girros, not only does it seem to have clear relations to kushala when you break it's hide revealing the metallic skin underneath, but it can also grow a living spore colony off its hide as well. A cool elder dragon, with a slightly annoying personal status effect packed with it

Nergigante/Ruiner- Porcupine boy. I think I would like his design more if it wasn't so weirdly abdominal-heavy? I have trouble imagining how this guy walks around normally... Anyways, I like the pressure Nergi makes to break his spikes before the divebomb, it's a nice tease to the focus on the later dps-races

Zorah Magdaros- Cool snapping turtle mountain, I think it's a suitable comparison to Lao Shen in the tempered fights. It's just unfortunate the only two required fights are so story-heavy that everyone assumes you'll be spending 3 hours sitting around, when their tempered fights actually cut it pretty close even for MR gear

Xeno'jiiva- The new elders in world are just winners, as far as I'm concerned. But while Xeno looks really cool with the translucent skin and the laser beams, the kit is basically Safi's but less. Still, it's a fun fight to finish the vanillagame on before they grow up

Kulve Taroth- Who gave royal ludroth that nice coat? Joking aside, I like any phase of Kulve that isn't the first one where you have to break her shell off. The shell phase is just painful spam of that tail attack if you don't stunlock her, but afterwards she gets fun when she goes faster with the rapidfire gold attacks and novas

Beotodus- Onto iceborne, Beotodus is easily my favorite of that piscine trio. No lava camping, no boring muck, just this snow shark trying to sneak bites at you.

Banbaro- Finally, the better duramboros. What it lacks in natural aesthetic, it makes up for it by throwing an entire forest at you. My only contention is he stole Bazelgeuse's job >:(

Frostfang Barioth- Well... its more interesting than regular barioth. Definitely not by design, but I think the whole freezing your feet into the ground stuff should be considered for the future of the ice status effect. Slowness makes a lot more sense than the same stamina debuff as water

Namielle- Has one busted up face. I love its whiskers, though. I like how it manipulates both water and electric damage in its attacks, and has clear indicators when its charged up and when its uncharged over the course of the fight.

Velkhana- Ice armor also has it's own clear indicators over the fight. Unlike Namielle though, I never want to face Velkhana with anything less than an insect glaive ever again. Pretty dragon, but there's no denying exactly how much they had to steal from kushala for that skeleton. Those slippery ice pools were the most bearable part of that fight with hammer, which only makes me all the more salty they didn't transfer that to Rise

Shara Ishvalda- Just a cool fucked up big dragon. I bet that eye trick is done through layering Shara's eyes and adding a lighting effect to make it work like the seeing-eye portraits in haunted houses, giving the illusion of always following you. The fight certainly gets a bit tight in the latter half, where Shara's usually stolen half of the arena from you at that point. ...They still seem so weirdly inkwash-y that I want to believe someone on the FF team designed them.

Safi-jiiva- Big Xeno! Not a very flashy fight, but seems fun to gun through with friends. Sapphire of The Emperor is still my favorite nova in iceborne visually. I've only done their training battle, so my opinion is probably subject to change if they get too annoying

Fatalis (World)- Speaking of fights I haven't done, I'm looking through the window at this fight like a starving victorian child

Izuchi/Great- My first MH, though the sad thing is you can only fight Rise monsters for the first time, once. Great Izuchi was one of those bird wyvern fights that stood out to me, and then immediately god outclassed after I got used to the game

Rachnoid- Lamaar! Don't go nibbling those heads!

Aknosom- Secretely a Kut-ku fight, but also a kut-ku fight handled in a fun manner compared to..... the usual..

Almudron- Pass. The mudball is the only cool thing going for him

Bishaten/Orange- Alright tengu-monkey, has some of Kecha's attacks in there, but it does a fine job mixing it up with those fruit and pinecone throws

Goss Harag- Arguably, the best regular rise boss. Goss is here to show people how to do the bear fight right, and they do it by fighting like a proper ogre rather than a bear. They play consistently, and they provide enough of a challenge with the damage Goss can deal with the dual ice-blades. It's just a shame they never saw a variant...

Tetranadon- A zamtrios-type that never lost its way. While zamtrios gets mixed up between 3 forms with no real identity, Tetranadon takes the clear sumo route with its inflated attacks, making a more interesting fight overall than the ice shark. Once again, it's a shame it never got a variant

Somnacanth/Aurora- I'm not fully sure how to judge the Somna fights. It swims around a decent amount, not too much to be annoying, and jumps between different flashing and explosive shells when the time calls for it. I think it mostly suffers because they decided to put mizu in the same game, and hunting mizu is a lot more technical than hunting Somna. I do think Aurora was a step in the right direction- they fight more aggressively than regular Somna and spend less time swimming around unless going for physical blows

Rakna-Kadaki/Pyre- Nerscylla's crazy sister! While Rakna is much slower than her 4U counterpart, she weirdly makes good practice for the smaller spider. Her web-launches are much slower, but more powerful, which better encourages players to cut the line when the opportunity shows itself. The bonus fire damage when webbed was a good idea, but unfortunately you'll end up escaping before Rakna goes for the fire combo more than half the time. Pyre, thankfully, skips the middleman and just blows you up in a matter of seconds before you get time to react to some of her attacks. I like their joint efforts with the baby rachnoids- it's the first time we've seen that kind of team-up in a while

Magnamalo/Scorned- Good shit. A flagship that's not too hard, but feels too fast on a first playthrough unless you really wrapped your mind around the wirebug speed. Cool samurai tiger, cool halberd tail, when am I going to see him and Glavenus turf war, huh?

Ibushi- An elder best left to the Rampage where it felt his fight belonged. Fighting him outside of it just feels weird, since his best attacks are all integrated into Allmother Narwa anyways, he feels a bit redundant outside of his comfort zone. I remember the rampage being tight at the time- Ibushi actually won a couple of rounds while I was trying to farm his gear in my alt file.

Narwa- Still not at the real fight, Narwa's vanilla fight before the update was... okay. I wasn't really impressed by it- I actually found it too easy at the time, because all of her attacks were pretty slow and easy to react to. It's only after the update that I felt she could live up to the final boss title

Narwa The Allmother- Now we're cooking with gas. Allmother drags you into an arena where you no longer have to shift your focus on siege weaponry until she novas, so the most of the fight is just between you and her, and she thankfully has more catered attacks to this situation. Now, we have a monster that is more dangerous to engage in the air, which is a title only shared by Valstrax in Rise. All of her attacks have more oomph, and she's not shy of breaking those big attacks up with bites to reposition herself either. ...Now if only she didn't steal Ahtal Ka's dragonators p:

Espinas/Flaming- Cactus dragon is here. Ridiculously hard on the first impression, then later fights mellow out as you learn more about them. I think it's a shame that Flaming ended up easier than basic Espinas, though the regular version doesn't usually capitalize on the stun window anyways, so he's alright outside of his initial spawn

Garangolm- New monkey discovered! Strangely, I think most of it's attacks seem pretty unique to it, I'm kind of hard-pressed to find other monsters to compare it to. Despite that, Garangolm ended up kind of.... boring. Oops. I like how it just blasts around on its hands, but unfortunately there's a monster at the end of Sunbreak that just does the same thing, but better.

Lunagaron- The second puppy! I still love Ebony Odogaron's fight the most, though Lunagaron has an interesting transformation gimmick I like. I just wish that its 'werewolf' farm hit harder than a wet towel outside of the lunge attack

Malzeno- Castlevania itself is here. And.. with a good chunk of Velkhana's kit. Oops. Well, despite all the tail attacks, his ground blasts are pretty interesting, his grab is just a pretty fun attack, and I like how Malzeno zooms around the arenas once he's enraged. I don't think it would've been bad if they just ported the Malzeno from the demo, but alas he was only kind of hard compared to the elders following him.

Magma Almudron- Special shout outs for being the better monster compared to basic Almudron, and probably one of the few fun lava monster fights. Its just much more aggressive, spends much less time clowning around, and its lava attacks are just more dangerous and interesting than its old kit

Gaismagorm- Ok but- did we have to have 3 goblin shark-mouthed elder bosses in Rise??? I actually understand Gais, but if they were committing to that, I felt like they should have just given Narwa and Ibushi normal snouts instead. Anyways- Gaismagorm is that much more interesting take on Garangolm's charges I mentioned, except Gais is the size of the entire battlefield. So, when he charges you're pretty liable to get chipped. The final boss of Sunbreak really kicks in once the gems are off and he lights up. Attacks get much harder to dodge, they summon meteors, sun turrets, all of this cool stuff to stop you. Gaismagorm might have not been a difficult final boss, but he definitely earned the respect a final boss elder dragon deserves in this series

The Risen Elders- Eeeeh? To be honest- the battles don't stand out as much to me as Valstrax's did. I'm at a loss on what attacks were clearly unique and endangered me, so... that's not good for post-100 variants

“Jingyi?” Lan Qiren repeated, looking down at the child tucked into his arms. “A good name.”

“Isn’t it?” Lan Yueheng said, beaming. “A-Xin thought of it!”

“You don’t say,” Lan Qiren said dryly. “Just the way your wife named all the last six?”

Lan Yueheng grinned bashfully. “She’s better at it!”

Lan Qiren shook his head, amused, and tried to offer the child back to his father.

“No, no, you should hold him longer. Babies are calming, and you’ve been having bad dreams recently, right?”

“Babies are not calming,” Lan Qiren said. There was a limit to how many times someone could play the same joke on him, and yes, he was mentally glaring at Wen Ruohan, Lao Nie, and Cangse Sanren as well while he thought that. “You’ve had six already, you should know that. Can we at least agree that this is the last one?”

Lan Yueheng and Zhang Xin had put off having children to help Lan Qiren raise Lan Xichen and then Lan Wangji, once he’d come around, no matter how much Lan Qiren had argued with them to the contrary. They’d laughed him off, saying it was nothing, but he’d been terribly afraid that they’d miss the window for it and end up childless, with no one to sweep their graves on Qingming except his nephews, and that in the end they’d blame him for it.

Naturally, despite his fears, it turned out in the end that they hadn’t had any trouble at all. Their first had been born when Lan Wangji had been three and Lan Xichen six, and they’d had six more after that, one after another like a bunch of maniacs – a girl, two boys, another girl, and then the twins a few years later, at the very end, just when everyone had thought they were already done. Lan Wangji had already been nearly fifteen, then.

Of course, the whole bit about ‘just when everyone had thought they were already done’ being about the twins was rather outdated: that was before the arrival of little Jingyi.

Nearly ten years after all the rest, even the twins; a belated and extremely unexpected child, as if Zhang Xin and Lan Yueheng and the heavens had all conspired to make fun of Lan Qiren for his previous worries. Zhang Xin had already been in her forties, yet she’d gotten through the entire process with a smile and no apparent discomfort, puttering around in her garden and managing her storehouses and scolding her children without any disruption. Not even the pain of labor would bring her down, even if she did have a tendency to mangle Lan Qiren’s hand and shout his ears to deafness in the process.

Lan Qiren’s ears and hand, because he’d helped oversee the births of his nephews – Han Kexin had resolutely refused the aid of any competent doctor, male or female, mockingly reminding him that she was supposed to be in seclusion, so he’d learned up on the basics himself while retaining the option to call in a proper doctor if something went wrong – and since he’d managed it well enough, naturally Zhang Xin wanted the same, impertinent brat that she was. And of course, she wasn’t going to hurt her husband’s precious hands in the process, never mind that he’d been the one to cause it in the first place.

At least they’d all been more or less easy births.

Little Lan Jingyi had been the easiest of the whole lot. Zhang Xin had barely made herself comfortable before he was coming, and before Lan Qiren had even really accepted that he was coming, he was already here.

Look at the rush to get going, as if he’s afraid to miss out on all the fun if he’s not here! Zhang Xin had laughed. He’s going to want to be part of part of everything!

“Last one, I swear!” Lan Yueheng promised cheerfully. “Anyway, we needed one around that age – that way he can be friends with Wangji’s boy! You know, the one he’s raising with Wei Wuxian, the one who used to be Wen sect.”

Lan Qiren snorted. As if he didn’t know the one in question. Wen Ruohan had been altogether too pleased to offer up some of his own blood to join the Lan sect when it turned out that Wei Wuxian had gotten attached to the orphan child of Wen Ruohan’s kinsman – eager as he ever was, really, to entangle himself irrevocably into Lan Qiren’s life, as if he still thought there was a chance, however remote, that Lan Qiren would find some reason to reject him or cut him out of his life once again. And never mind that it’d been years and years since anything like that had even come closer to happening!

“Yueheng-xiong,” he said patiently. “Mathematics are one of your favorite subjects, so I know you know that that means that your son will be friends with my grandnephew.”

Lan Yueheng scratched his nose. “Not your grandnephew yet,” he said, grinning; he didn’t look even remotely ashamed of it. “Wei Wuxian’s the one that adopted him, and Wangji’s not married him yet!”

“He’s working on it.”

Wen Ruohan’s “help” – in the sense of agreeing to let the Lan sect adopt little A-Yuan and not allowing Wei Wuxian to do it on his own – was probably doing more to impede it than anything else.

Lan Yueheng sniggered. “Should I offer to help?”

“Most certainly not. Save your fireworks and flares for the actual marriage.” Lan Qiren rubbed his forehead. “Cangse Sanren is being deliberately obnoxious about negotiations over it, I swear.”

“Cangse Sanren is always obnoxious, Qiren-xiong,” Lan Yueheng reminded him. “Always – and it’s only gotten worse since she had her doom stolen away by Lao Nie.”

“Don’t remind me,” Lan Qiren grumbled. He didn’t even want to know how the two of them had managed to swap fates, or what the consequences of it would be in the end. For some reason, Wen Ruohan seemed oddly insistent about blaming Lao Nie’s second wife, despite her having been perfectly nice as far as Lan Qiren could tell, if somewhat strangely obsessed with food. Possibly he was just annoyed that poor Wen Zhulio had saved Cangse Sanren’s life a dozen times over so far and yet Lao Nie was getting the credit.

At any rate, neither of them had died so far, which was all to the good.

“I’m getting to the point that I think looking for her master and asking her for permission might be the easier course,” he added irritably. “The boys want to get married! What’s the point of tormenting them over the details?”

“Please don’t go out looking for an immortal mountain, Qiren-xiong,” Lan Yueheng said, laughing, and finally condescended to pluck little Lan Jingyi out of his arms. “I’m going to put him to bed. You should rest, too. No more work today! And only good dreams!”

Lan Qiren shook his head and watched him walk away.

For a moment, the image was replaced with another, a remnant from the terrible dream he had been having the past few nights, the one that still lingered: Lan Yueheng, still laughing but walking with a limp, his right foot gone from beneath the knee – the one he’d lost when the Cloud Recesses had burned, and because of the mess that had ensued it hadn’t been treated for far too long, becoming infected; every year thereafter he had gotten sick from a recurrent and worsening illness, driving Lan Qiren and Zhang Xin both crazy with worry.

Lan Qiren’s chest hurt just thinking about it, his own injuries aching, the remnants of the vicious wounds from the terrible beating Wen Xu had ordered with his eyes curved in a mean smile as he watched them try to break Lan Qiren’s meridians out of sheer spite; one day, in that horrible future foretold by the dream, Zhang Xin would worry too much and fail to pay attention, walking on something she shouldn’t and poisoning her blood, and when she went Lan Yueheng would follow her away, the two of them going side-by-side into the next world as they had gone through this one, leaving Lan Qiren to raise their youngest child the rest of the way himself. No matter how tired he was, he wouldn’t put that burden on their other children, all of them abruptly orphaned, the final belated victims of the desperate war against the Wen sect to stop their tyrannical conquest…

Lan Qiren shook his head abruptly, clearing it.

What am I thinking, he wondered. There’s no war against the Wen sect – if da-ge ever got something like a war of conquest into his head, I’d scold him until my face turned blue. Anyway, even if he did do something like that, A-Xu would never dream of ordering someone to beat me! Didn’t I half-raise him and his little brother both, taught them swordsmanship and music and ethics even as Wen Ruohan taught Xichen and Wangji arrays and talismans and how to understand people?

Anyway, A-Xu’s a sweet boy, underneath his superficial arrogance; he knows better than to put on a face like that in front of me…nor is there anything wrong with Lan Yueheng’s foot, or Zhang Xin’s blood, for that matter. Lan Jingyi’s going to grow up in a large family, loud and screeching and thoroughly inappropriate, and unlike my dream his parents will be at the head of the table to oversee the whole thing.

It was just a bad dream.

Lan Qiren shook his head once again.

Maybe Lan Yueheng was right, he reflect. He ought to get some rest – and not just today. After all, he was already half-retired, with Lan Xichen taking over more and more of the tasks of sect leader and excelling in them; Lan Qiren already spent one month out of every three out of the Cloud Recesses, whether wandering around the cultivation world playing his music or visiting with friends and acquaintances, pretending all the while to ignore the Wen sect and Lan sect and Nie sect guards being too busy socializing with each other to remember that they were supposed to be hidden guards.

He could go again now, even. Wen Ruohan had said something about Lao Nie visiting the Nightless City, the grin on his face leaving little question as to how he planned to spend the time with him; by now they should have worn each other out and were probably capable of something resembling human speech.

Yes, he should go visit them, he thought, and realized once again that he was happy – truly happy, not just content. He would go visit them, and complain about the prospect of yet another of Lan Yueheng’s brood running rampage through his classrooms for however long it took to educate them.

It seemed like each one was louder than the next, but at least little Lan Jingyi, whether in a rush or otherwise, and even in conjunction with Wei Wuxian’s little A-Yuan or Jin Zixuan’s little A-Ling, couldn’t possibly be more disruptive than the twins.

That was simply impossible.

Welcome to the Family

Fujin meets Sienna's family for the first time! Expect lots of fluff, a whole lot of craziness, and most importantly, some wholesome family bonding!! ^_^

Returning from a successful mission, Fujin arrived at the White Lotus academy to share his progress with his brother, Raiden. On his way, he came across to find Sienna with a satchel at her side and exchanging hugs with Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and Kung Jin.

"Is she...leaving?" Fujin internally questioned himself as he made his way towards the others.

"Fujin!" The Shaolin beauty ran towards the wind god, happily greeting him with a hug and kiss on the cheek. As they parted, she could see the concern on his face as he looked at her bag. Sienna caresses his face and warmly smiles, reassuring him it's far from what he feared.

"Don't worry, I'm not leaving the academy for good. It's just my family really really misses me so I'm gonna go visit them for a few days." Sienna then proceeded to pull out of her satchel a bunch of letters and began reading a few one by one.

Sienna softly laughed, shaking her head as she placed the letters back in her bag. Fujin smiled as she read the letters, finding it so wholesome and heartfelt that her family shared about their day as if she were there with them.

"I see they're to blame for your weirdness." Kung Lao teased, receiving a nudge to the chest from Liu. But he wasn't wrong though.

"Oh really? I couldn't tell." Sienna remarked sarcastically with a smile.

"Sounds like they really miss you." Liu Kang chuckled.

"They do sound crazy, but they still encouraged you to venture out into the world and even approved of you joining the White Lotus. I'd give anything to have a supportive family like yours." Kung Jin smiled with a little hint of sadness behind it. Growing up with the family he had, it's been a rough ride for him.

Fujin placed a warm hand on the young archer's shoulder. " But you have a family here at the Wu Shi, not to mention a legendary uncle at your side."

"Whom he bet Liu Kang could beat." Kung Lao mentioned, folding his arms as if he were interrogating the young Shaolin. 

Jin faced the ground, looking side to side in a silent panic. "Oh wow! Would you look at that, I gotta go sharpen my arrows!" He scurried off with Kung Lao right behind him.

"You already sharpened them this morning!"

"An archer must always stay sharp!"

Rolling his eyes, Liu Kang gave Sienna one last goodbye hug and respectfully left her and Fujin to make sure Lao and Jin didn't kill each other.

The wind god shook his head at the mischievous uncle & nephew duo, before warmly smiling at his beautiful Shaolin lover. He pulled her close to his side as they both walked to find Raiden.

"Kung Lao is right. Your family sounds very whimsical, but also really wonderful." Fujin softly smiled to himself, a hint of admiration in his tone that didn't go unnoticed by Sienna.

"Oh trust me they really are. Hey.... why don't you come with me and meet them in person? Of course if you're not busy and it's okay with Raiden."

"After I brief him of the mission, I'm sure my brother wouldn't mind."

"Alrighty then, it's settled. I know for a fact my family will absolutely love you."

"You really think so?"

"Please, who doesn't love you?"

"The evil forces we fight against that want to vanquish our rea-"

"Yeah yeah, shut up and give me those lips." Sienna rolled her eyes, pulling in her giggling wind dork for a kiss.

With the briefing gone well, and Raiden sending his best regards, Sienna and Fujin left the academy together and embarked on their voyage. Sure they could've teleported and shit like that but they wanted to savor every second of the journey together. Expect lots and lots of pics of them at farms, the park, meeting friendly people, traveling musicians, the list goes on.

 By the time they arrived in town, it was already nighttime and they were approaching her family's cafe, The Serene Garden, just about to close. As the last bit of customers left, they entered the establishment and the first person they find is her father Karey, wiping down tables as he hums to himself, completely unaware of the couple's presence.

Sienna presses a finger to her lips at Fujin as she tip toes in her father's direction and clears her throat.

"Excuse me, table for 2 please?"

"I'm sorry ma'am we are cloOOOOOOOOOOOOOMAHHHHHHHGAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWD!!!" Immediately dropping everything, Karey zoomed past the tables, tripping over a few of them and some chairs while still holding that note as he cried tears of joy, embracing his daughter he hadn't seen in so long.

"AHGIHDLHAHDHAIDIHAIDHAIHAGAHH!!!" Karey faced his husband, still shaking their daughter frantically in his arms, telling Kojoe all he needed to know what was going on.

"BABEYGIRRRRLLLLLLLAHHHHHHDIAHIHADIGAHHHHHHHH!!" Kojoe yeeted the bread across the dining room, zooming on over (and yes even him tripping over shit too) to join in on the rather loud, extraordinary homecoming.

Talk about a family reunion. 2 grown men yelling nonsense and crying tears of pure happiness as they smoosh the ever loving hell out of Sienna, trying so very hard to contain her laughter. She glanced over at Fujin and he wasn't faring any better. His face buried in his hand, a bit red from laughing too hard. The man was absolutely losing it. 

"What you foos going on bout now?" Uncle Sterling, the "Always 100" man himself, came out of the kitchen questioning these crazy mofos and then his eyes laid upon his precious niece.

"Aye! Is that my wildflower I see over there?" Sterling happily snatched his wildflower out of her fathers' hands and into his welcoming embrace. "Look at you! You used to be as short as these tables and now you're giant! Imma make you a special welcome back dinner, you just wait!" With that, Sterling vanished right back into the kitchen.

"You're actually here here!"

"In non letter form!"

"How've you been sweetie?"

"Do you still need that table?"

"Damn, where's mah baguette?"

"Wanna see my pet worm? I named him wormy."

Sienna giggled. Man she missed these goofballs. "Paw-paw, I'm fine, I'm fine. I'm really happy to see you guys too. I came down here with my boyfriend, Fuj-"

"Chicken or steak??" Sterling asked from the kitchen window holding 2 different types of protein.

"Both are fine." Sienna answered, held captive in her paw-paws' arms yet again, pulling her away from the obviously befuddled wind god. She told them that she had a boyfriend in her letters. How'd they forget?? Ughhh..

"Hold Wildflower Kare-Bear, I gots this." Kojoe approaches Fujin with his chest puffed out, his face amusingly prideful, and he walked like a penguin with really tight jeans on. He looked pretty silly, but despite holding back so much laughter, Fujin remained respectful and tried to take this seriously...somewhat. somehow. someway.

"How do ya do, my boy? What's your name?"

"Fujin. It's wonderful to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too Fiji. I hear you are dating my daughter."

"Yes sir, I am."

"Well we love our wildflower to death around here and we need identimifcation that you do the same. So here a couple of questions for ya. First question...What color is my underwear?"

"Uhhh....white?" Fujin answered.

"Okay, okay." Kojoe nodded while stroking his chin. "Aight, I'll up the antenna with this next question. What I have for lunch today?"

"Ummm....a sandwich?"

"Damn, he a clever one." This was by far the weirdest "get to know your future in laws" session ever, but Fujin was still enjoying this.

"Now here's the most importantest, most specialist, finalist question. What...are your incisions towards my daughter?"

"Uh paw-paw, don't you mean 'intentions?'

"Aww, thank ya baby girl, paw paw's got this." Kojoe winked, giving Sienna a thumbs up.

"So yes, what are your incisions towards my baby girl?"

"Oy fucking vey..." Sienna groaned.

Fujin immediately turned his gaze towards Sienna and there was that precious smile on his face.

"I intend to fill her days with love and happiness...just as she does for me."

Sienna blushed at Fujin's answer and returned a loving smile. Kojoe looked back and forth between the two before walking up a bit closer to the wind god, who was now awaiting judgment.

"Hmmm.....I like him! You alright! Welcome to the family Fiji!" Kojoe exclaimed, opening his arms to embrace Fujin. Karey released Sienna to go welcome Fujin himself, and as the Shaolin beauty relished the sight of her boyfriend and paw-paws getting along, she felt someone hold her hand and turned to see it was her grandpoppy, Poppy Pedro.

"Poppy!" Sienna picked him up and spun him around in the grandest hug of hugs. Poppy was the shortest of everyone, and seemed rather frail, but he was so full of life and love.

"Mi Vida!" He lovingly cupped her face, planting numerous kisses on it. He was so happy to see his flower he could cry.

Poppy's actually been watching everything from the sidelines. He glanced at her paw-paws for a second, shaking his head and twirling a finger near his temple to express the annoyance they caused him, making Sienna giggle.

He then noticed Fujin and made his way towards the wind god. He was astonished by the elemental but didn't seem intimidated. He then proceeded to grab ahold of both Fujin's hands and warmly smiled. "Welcome, my son."

"Nice to meet you, Poppy Pedro." Fujin returned the welcome with a smile. Oh they were gonna get along just fine.

Out on the cafe patio, the family was enjoying a delicious dinner underneath the starlit sky, having a drink or two, laughing, sharing stories and overall just having a wonderful time.

"Okay sooo, you're a God of Wind?"

"You protect the earth and fight villains?

"There's a temple in the sky that you live in?"

"Have a God brother that controls thunder?"

"You taught buttercup how to fight and fell in love with her?"

"And your hair and eyes aren't like that coz you ate too many marshmallows?"

"You got it." Fujin nodded, chuckling. To be honest, he was pretty concerned about how her family would handle the truth about him being a god and all, and they handled it much better than expected. Could this night get any better?

"Aight ya'll! Time for the Wildflower special, Strawberry Kreme Pie."

Yup, just got better. Much much better.

Sterling came out with 6 slices of the dessert, and he made sure to add extra berries and sauce on Sienna's just as she liked it when she was little. She wanted to cry right then and there at the delicacy before her.

Sienna faced Fujin, holding her plate near her face. "Do you see this? This...is heaven on a plate. Go on babe, give it a try."

Taking a piece of the pie, Fujin took one bite and he went silent for a second. His eyes widened, hand over heart in astonishment as to how amazing this dessert was. Honestly, it was on the same level as Edenian pies, maybe even better. The secret? It's all about the love. Corny, I know. Deal with it.

"I'm glad you still love it, buttercup."

"Oh how could I not?" Sienna said, face stuffed with strawberry goodness.

"At first I was thinking about making a crumble with these Fuji apples I got."

Sienna giggled as a thought came to mind. "Oh wow, 'Fuji'. Just add an 'N' and whaddya get? Fujin Apples. You got your own brand of apples babe. Ya welcome." Fujin shook his head, taking some whipped cream and smothering Sienna's nose with it.

"Hey...that sounds like a really good nickname."

"Paw-paw I was just kidd...no no wait you're right. It does sound pretty cute."

"Sounds 100 to me! I'm diggin it!"

"Alrighty then y'all! Let's toast to Fujin Apple!!" Kojoe exclaimed with everyone raising their glass. Fujin felt honored to be given such an extraordinary name, symbolizing his acceptance into the family. 

Kicking off the celebration even further, Sterling and Karey whipped out the guitar and bongos to play while Kojoe and Sienna shared a dance around the bonfire.

Fujin sat alongside Poppy Pedro as they watched their family enjoy themselves around the fire. Poppy noticed the love in Fujin's eyes as he looked on Sienna, making his heart soar. Poppy is a man of good judgement, and he could tell that his flower got herself a really great man. He placed a warm hand on the wind god's arm and faced him with a smile.

"This is great life. Here, crazy everyday. Aye ay ay, muy muy loca. But siento amor aqui, I feel so much love here. Sienna...ohhh ella es muy maravillosa. Such a good, good girl. Amazing wife, just for you. Tienes mi bendicion. I give you my blessing Fujin. So so happy to call you family."

Those words touched Fujin's heart so deeply. It felt like a genuine father son moment, considering that Fujin never had an actual father. Sure Raiden had fatherly tendencies, but it wasn't the same.

"Thank you, Poppy. I am honored."

"You can call me Father.."

"T-thank you, Father...."

Feeling a bit emotional, Fujin held back the lump in his throat as he and Poppy shared an embrace, unaware of Sienna witnessing the moment and shedding a few tears of happiness herself.

"Hey! You two gonna sit all night and miss out on all the fun?" Sienna teased, pulling the two men by their hands as they all danced the night away.

This has definitely been one of the most fun, memorable nights Fujin ever had. To travel with his beautiful beloved and have the opportunity to connect with and be welcomed into her amazingly, extraordinary family has been so refreshing and very well deserved.

The Gaang + parents finally meeting/holding newborn Lin? Toph is a single mother in this AU

Hi Anon, thank you for the ask! And pls this is so sweet my heart needs this serotonin :D

I feel like every Gaang member had their own moment with Lin. I'm not sure if it was like, right after she was born or just at some point when she was a newborn, but it seems fitting that all of them would have this cute interaction with Lin.

Aang: Would probably cry. He just thinks a newborn is so precious and means so much to him. He's a total sap, and talks to her about how she's the future and how her mom and aunts and uncles are going to help pave the way for her to change the world. Something super cheesy like that and has Toph complaining jokingly if she overhears him.

Katara: I usually HC that Katara delivers Toph's babies (in just about every AU. Toph only trusts Katara for that, unless she's like... TOTALLY not available). Delivering her best friend's child into the world is really special, and I think she'd find so much joy and emotion in that moment, especially when she hands Lin to Toph. Katara gets to see the look of pure joy on Toph's face when she holds Lin, and I think she'd take pride in being the one to help her, as well as humbled at the thought that she was able to see such an intimate moment between Toph and Lin.

Zuko: For Toph, I feel like he would cry when he got to hold Lin. Or at the very least get choked up. Toph is like a sister to him and I feel like he would become very pensive and consider just how fast time flies. It was only yesterday he was 16 and helping these teenagers save the world, and now they're all adults and having families of their own. And like Toph, he probably understands her fear of being a parent better than anyone. They both had poor upbringings and he knows how important it is for her to raise her daughter well. I think when he holds Lin, he makes a quiet promise to Lin to help Toph in any way we can.

Sokka: Perhaps Sokka tries to lighten the mood with a silly "she's so suqishy" comment, but the joke is either ignored or not delivered well, because damn, Lin is a beautiful baby. He's not the best at holding her or what to say in that moment, but as he rubs her chubby cheek with the back of his finger, he resolves to treating Lin like a niece, and decides then and there that he's gonna be the best damn uncle to her. Because she's Toph's kid, and he'd do just about anything for Toph and his found family.

Suki: She seems like the type to vocalize her joy and say it all to Toph and Lin. Suki adores Lin from the start, and jokes that perhaps she can train her to be the new Kyoshi Warrior leader. After all, Lin's a Beifong, and she's got that fighting spirit. Her moment with Lin is short and sweet, and ends with a gentle kiss to Lin's forehead.

Lao and Poppy: Lao and Poppy were always ecstatic at the idea of being grandparent (they try to ignore the lack of a spouse/nuptials lmao) and spoil the baby the second they learn Toph is pregnant. But when they hold Lin, it's a whole new feeling for them. Pride and joy and an love so strong they can only compare it to the time they had Toph. They aren't necessarily in a position to give advice or to tell Toph how to do things, but they try to find ways that they can be there for her and be supportive.

Sad Loppy headcanons???

Loppy, aka THE angst fest. Ufffff okay, I'll try to NOT contradict what we know and just play with what we don't know. Just to let you know Aangst is my thing okay?

Content warning: miscarriages

They married when they were 16 after Lao lost his father in an accident. His mother died at childbirth. Poppy's maiden name is Huan, she had an older sister that was jealous of her because she was pretty and smart. Poppy's father, Lord Huan, originally wanted to arrange a marriage between Lao and Poppy's older sister, but Lao fell in love with Poppy right away and preferred her. (This backstory isn't my definitive headcanon sometimes I use it for comedic reasons)

"Toph that's not ladylike" "You know what else isn't ladylike? Stealing your sister's boyfriend" "As I was saying, you're VERY ladylike I'm so glad..."

The green pearls necklace is his engagement gift. Green pearls are extremely rare and expensive. Lao wanted to impress her giving her the most perfect and beautiful necklace in the world (just like her)

They lost 3 babies before Toph was born. That made Poppy deal with periods of depression in which she stayed in her private rooms without talking to anyone for days. Lao didn't exactly know what to do so he used to sit outside her door, giving her space but also missing her.

Toph's birth was extremely difficult and both she and Poppy almost died. The doctors managed to save them but Poppy was unconscious for 2 weeks and they warned Lao that the baby girl might not even survive. They never talk about Toph's birth because it was extremely traumatizing.

Lao refused to have more children because he couldn't bear the thought of almost losing Poppy again.

Immediately after the baby's birth the doctors told Lao maybe the wisest thing would be to not choose a baby name until they knew for sure if she would survive. Lao ignored them, decided he would make sure she was going to live, and named her Poppy Jr. That lasted like 2 weeks until Poppy regained consciousness and changed it to Toph, the name she wanted.

Lao grew Soccer Mom levels of obsessed with the baby's safety and how to improve her health. He never admitted it, but he was actually very nervous about being a good father. So he always focused on giving her 2 things: what she needed for a good future in their society (good manners, education according to the Bei Fong name, learning about traditions) and what he personally wished he had had as a boy (safety).

He grew obsessed with that tho so at the end that backfired and it ended in Toph running away at 12.

When Poppy got furious and dumped him after it, it was he who left because he knew that, if she left, he'd never see her again and he didn't want to lose hope of someday fixing everything, somehow.

He took the flowers of her hair with him. She kept his favorite green hat.

In 'The Rift' he was at his worst because he missed Poppy terribly.

In Imbalance they're still not together again but I hc they had started to write letters to each other.

They didn't come back together immediately after they started to speak to each other again. It took some time. Mostly because they also wanted to fix things with Toph first.

Poppy won't admit it but she was hurt Toph never thought about talking to her after Toph and Lao reconciliated in The Rift. She wanted to give her space and only reach out for her when she wanted and that took years. She couldn't believe Toph actually started to talk to her father again before her.

She spends the next 40 years thinking Toph doesn't really love her.

(I know you said angst but this one is happy: she has a relationship of mutual adoration with Suyin. Suyin is genuinely the biggest joy of her old age).

(It's unavoidable for Lao to adore Lin. Lin looks like Poppy).

Poppy died when Suyin was pregnant with Huan and Lao died 2 months after her, from a broken heart. Suyin wanted to bury them in Zaofu but Baatar reminded her they'd probably have preferred the family's cemetery.

Suyin's most precious possession is her grandma's green pearls necklace. Her intention was always to give it up to Opal when she were older. Air Nomads might reject personal possessions but Opal will inherent that necklace even if she has to threaten Tenzin herself.

Lin kept Lao's hat and Suyin kept Poppy's hair flowers. When both sisters reconciliated Suyin gave Lin the flowers, because she knows her sister always liked them. Lin has both objects in her apartment, one next to the other, on a little table in her living room.

Shen Shen is an obvious douchebag, I have no dilemma there, but I’m not yet sure what the problem with this one is. He just feels so slimy and shady and the moustache does not help.
