Gisteren was het zo ver. Vroeg in de ochtend trokken we naar hartje Amsterdam met maar één doel. Dé Nintendo switch ervaren. In een speciale ruimte waren de eerste demo modellen opgesteld en konden we ook de eerste launchgames spelen.

Hardware

Nintendo is gestopt met het gebruik van optische schijfjes. De Nintendo Switch is overgestapt op geheugenkaartjes voor de fysieke verkoop van games. Het effect van de kaartjes wordt vrij snel duidelijk. Ze zijn niet alleen compact, maar zorgen ook voor ontzettend korte laadtijden tijdens het gamen. De spellen voelen hierdoor echt veel sneller aan.

Wanneer je de Nintendo Switch in haar dock hebt zitten, wordt deze opgeladen en speel je jouw games in Full HD. Pak je de Switch eruit, dan game je verder op een fors 720p HD display. Ik had zelf mijn twijfels over deze lagere resolutie, maar de kwaliteit van het display doet die snel vergeten. Ten opzichte van Full HD mis ik de extra pixels niet. Het scherm is gewoon enorm goed van kwaliteit.

Controller

Ook bijzonder zijn de twee halve controllers die je er standaard bij krijgt. Samen zijn ze één, maar met een vriend naast je kun je toch beiden gamen zonder een extra controller te hoeven kopen. Oké, je moet er wel een setje Joy Con Straps voor kopen. Deze voegen schouderknoppen aan de twee halve controllers toe. In dezelfde sfeer gaat Nintendo ook het Joy Con Wheel verkopen. Een enorm leuke accessoire voor tijdens Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. De Joc Con controller helften bevatten ook NFC ondersteuning zodat je Amiibo kunt gebruiken. Daarnaast komt er nog een losse Pro controller. My weapon of choice for sure…

Games

Alle launchgames waren speelbaar tijdens het event, maar toch lichten we er maar een paar uit. De pareltjes als je het mij vraagt. Natuurlijk begin ik dan met Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Een opgewaardeerde versie van de Wii U game met meer karatkers en opties. De gameplay blijft vertrouwd goed aanvoelen. De game is in split screen met twee halve Joy Con controllers te spelen. Leuk voor multiplayer sessies in de trein. Je kunt tijdens het spelen tot acht Switches aan elkaar koppelen via lokale WiFi. Met split-screen erop kun je dus met 16 man in een level racen. Waanzinnig gaaf!

De tweede echt grote release is natuurlijk Zelda Breath of the Wild. Tijdens het event liet Nintendo dezelfde demo spelen die onze Jeroen heeft gespeeld tijdens de Gamescom. Toen nog op de Wii U versie. De versie die ik zag op de launchparty was natuurlijk helemaal aangepast op de Switch hardware. Ik verwacht dus veel creatieve toevoegingen aan de gameplay. Voor de verzamelaars van Amiibo heeft Nintendo ook goed nieuws, er komt een nieuwe serie Amiibo van deze Zelda.

Voor de fans van Shooters zal Nintendo Splatoon 2 lanceren. De game is de opvolger van Splatoon op de Wii U. Hij bevat nieuwe levels, karakters en natuurlijk wapens. Je kunt dus nog creatiever te werk gaan om het andere team met verf te vernederen ;-).

Nintendo heeft ook weer een spel bedacht waarvan de screenshots ons in eerste instantie aan het twijfelen zette. Het gaat om Snipperclips. Deze game in doodle-stijl geeft je twee poppetjes waarmee je creatief allerlei puzzels mag oplossen. Wanneer je aan deze game begint, werkt deze zeer verslavend. Voor mij was dit dé grote verrassing van de presentatie.

Nintendo brengt woensdag de Switch uit en dat is precies twintig jaar nadat dat de Nintendo 64 in Europa uitkwam. Die console had net als het nieuwe model een bescheiden line-up van launchgames, maar in een paar jaar tijd kwamen er verschillende games die nu als klassiekers worden gezien. http://dlvr.it/NWBsQF

Een game is pas echt goed, als ik als reviewer eigenlijk niet weet waar ik moet beginnen. Gewoon omdat er veel te veel te doen is. Ik zou bijna vergeten om de review te schrijven ;-).

Korte intro

Voor wie Zelda nog niet kent, Zelda is niet die dude op de cover van de game. Dat is Link en Link moet altijd Zelda’s issues oplossen. En ditmaal zijn die wel erg groot. Het koninkrijk Hyrule werd zo’n 100 jaar geleden verdedigd door Link en Zelda, maar die twee wisten het niet te redden. Het gevolg? Ganon heeft het kasteel ingenomen, Zelda is foetsie en jij, Link, hebt 100 jaar liggen slapen in een grot om daarna zonder herinneringen wakker te worden. Dat is het moment waarop je weet, er is werk aan de winkel. En je hebt honger. Dat laatste is trouwens goed nieuws. Zelden was voedsel zo belangrijk in een Zelda game als in Zelda – Breath of the Wild.

Zelda – Breath of the Wild vs. Metal Gear vs. Monster Hunter

Als ik Zelda – Breath of the Wild moet vergelijken met andere games, voelt Breath of the Wild een beetje als een kruising tussen de gameplay van Monster Hunter (Capcom) en Metal Gear Solid – Phantom Pain (Konami) in het universum van het bekende Hyrule. Zo laten monsters onderdelen van zichzelf vallen wanneer ze verslagen zijn. Dit zijn verschillende soorten onderdelen die op verschillende manieren ingezet kunnen worden om eten en items te maken. Om eten te maken, moet je koken. Net als in Monster Hunter. Ook is strategie veel belangrijker wanneer je aanvallen uitvoert. Er zijn wachttorens waar monsters op kunnen staan en exploderende vaten die je kunt misbruiken voor jouw doel. Je kunt aanvallen vanaf de grond, maar ook vanuit de lucht en je kunt jezelf verstoppen om missies in stealth uit te voeren. De gameplay van Zelda – Breath of the Wild gaat diep, heel diep.

De details

Hoewel dit niet de eerste Zelda game is met een open wereld, is dit wel de grootste open wereld. En letterlijk tot in de puntjes verzorgd. Alles lijkt ontdekt te kunnen worden en naarmate je skills verbeteren, kun je oude gebieden opnieuw bezoeken om daar toch weer nieuwe dingen te ontdekken en misschien zelfs nieuwe quests te op te lossen.

Quests

Natuurlijk is jouw belangrijkste quest om het koninkrijk van het kwaad te verlossen. Onlangs liet een gamer al zien dit onder een uur gedaan te kunnen krijgen. Mede door een foutje in het spel zelf. Maar een uur gameplay, daar gaan de makers natuurlijk niet voor. Nee, Zelda zit bommetje vol met andere quests en zelfs mini quests. Van een kind dat een wortel nodig heeft tot een boer die binnen een minuut zo veel mogelijk herten afgeschoten wilt hebben. En dan valt er nog een huis te kopen.

Inderdaad. Een eigen huis voor ongeveer 3.000 Rupees. En voor nog eens 1.400 Rupees richt je het in tot jouw persoonlijke tempel. Een stal heeft het huis niet, maar die is op diverse plekken te vinden en je kunt daarin ook nog eens tot vijf paarden houden. Waaronder de zeldzame Epona die je krijgt met de Link amiibo uit de Super Smash Brothers serie.

Amiibo

En er valt nog veel meer te beleven met Amiibo in deze game. Hoewel het gros van de Amiibo kleine items geven wanneer je deze scant, leveren Zelda gerelateerde Amiibo al snel meer op. Met name bijzondere wapens. Met de Wolf Link Amiibo kun je zelfs ene wolf spawnen die je gaat helpen en de hartjes worden overgenomen uit Twilight Princess, mits je daarvan een save op de Amiibo hebt staan. De Link Amiibo leveren veelal ook kledingstukken op van de game waaruit ze afkomstig zijn. A blast from the past!

Tempels

Maar waar het al jaren echt om draait zijn natuurlijk de tempels. Dit is dé gameplay waar Zelda beroemd om is geworden. Hier leer je jouw nieuwe krachten kennen. Je leert er krachten combineren om puzzels op te lossen en je leert er vechten. Bovenal is het een ware test voor de manieren waarop je de Nintendo Switch en Wii U kunt bedienen. Zoals het hoort bij een launchgame, tast Nintendo letterlijk alle mogelijkheden af, al zijn de tempels doorgaans wel wat vlotter door te spelen dan de tempels uit de eerdere Zelda titels. Maar bij die titels was de open wereld doorgaans echt veel kleiner. Elk voordeel heb…

Bediening

In Zelda kun je echt enorm veel en dat vraagt een een kleine tol. De bediening van Zelda – Breath of the Wild is stiekem best complex geworden. Veel knoppencombinaties en veel knoppen die op basis van acties, van functie veranderen. Dit maakt de game wel een tikkeltje harder om in te stappen voor de allerjongste gamers.
