Anche perché nei giorni scorsi le Fiji avevano deciso di aderire (...) all’Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, un nuovo meccanismo lanciato da(gli Usa) (...). (A)ltri Paesi nella regione avevano espresso preoccupazioni. (Il) presidente degli Stati Federati di Micronesia, aveva messo in guardia le nazioni dal firmarlo temendo che potesse scatenare una nuova guerra fredda. (Il) presidente di Palau (che non ha legami diplomatici con la Cina e riconosce Taiwan) aveva avvertito (...) che patti (...) con la Cina avrebbero potuto avere conseguenze dannose. (...) È saltato, dunque, quell’accordo multilaterale che prevedeva l’addestramento degli ufficiali di polizia del Pacifico da parte della Cina, la collaborazione in “sicurezza tradizionale e non tradizionale” e l’allargamento della cooperazione giudiziaria. Oltre a ciò la Cina vorrebbe sviluppare congiuntamente un piano per la pesca, aumentare la cooperazione nella gestione delle reti internet della regione e creare istituti e aule Confucio. A Pechino rimangono accordi bilaterali più piccoli firmati con i Paesi del Pacifico e “un proprio documento di posizionamento” sulle relazioni nella regione (...).  Una figuraccia diplomatica per Pechino. (...) La propaganda cinese si è subito mossa per tentare di rimediare. Il Global Times, megafono in lingua inglese, (...) sostiene che i Paesi insulari del Pacifico non saranno usati da nessuno per diventare fronti di competizione tra grandi potenze. Come a dire: o con noi, o con nessuno. (...) (I)l flop diplomatico cinese rappresenta una vittoria per gli Stati Uniti (...). Se la sicurezza ha sostituto lo sviluppo come la parola chiave della politica estera della Cina, gli Stati Uniti sembrano voler puntare su iniziative economiche riconoscendo l’importanza dell’agenda di prosperità e non soltanto di sicurezza, verso i Paesi più piccoli e quelli in via di sviluppo, dove si concentrerà in futuro il confronto tra le due superpotenze (...). . L’Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity e il caso delle Isole Salomone lo dimostrano. Le iniziali difficoltà cinesi potrebbero rappresentano un piccolo segnale che la strada è quella giusta.
