From ceiling fan, to stand-fan, to exhaust fan, why all of them have 3 blades?

We can’t say that 3-blade fan is actually a standard, but a carefully designed product for the country, keeping in mind the tradeoff between energy requirement and cooling requirement.

In countries, like America and Japan etc, where fans are used only along with AC to maintain the air circulation in room. In India, fans are a primary source of cooling.

But just to clear the fact, fan doesn’t reduce room temperature, or air humidity, it just compresses the air, making it warmer than the body temperature, which causes evaporation of sweat & these vapours carry heat from body to surround & thus we feel chilling effect.

But why 3 blades only?

So the science is, more the number of blades, heavier the fan will be, so slower the RPM, and would need more powerful motor to rotate the fan, thus will increase the energy consumption.

But, increasing the blades, increase the airflow as well, but would increase the air drag(opposing force).

But then, why not go for 1-2 blade only?

1 blade is completely out of scope, as the blades need to balance the fan weight, and one blade fails miserable in this task.

2 blades? Good enough, but will have less air flow.

So, experimentations have proved that 3 blades are best suited for Indian households, with just the required amount of airflow, and energy consumption.

Americas and other such countries, which requires more air circulation in a closed room, prefers 4 blade fans, as the airflow is more, also as they have electric frequency of 60Hz(compared to 50Hz in India), it gets feasible to support a little heavier fan.

Quick fact: Fans have a humped airflow, higher in the middle of blade, and lower around the ends, so sitting just below the fan may not do good to you. Let your enemy sit. :-P 

This humped airflow causes the noise that comes through fan, so the fan companies come up with tapered, spiralled or twisted blades to smoothen the airflow, thus reducing the noise.

This new year, I am starting with my resolution of learning one new thing every day. I thought of sharing my learning with the world.

But, it’s not just a very generous side of mine, it has lots of selfish reasons attached to it.

I have no experience in blogging, nor I am a very good writer. I am just a Software Engineer, who is always around her laptop. So it’s actually easier for me to write a blog than to write a diary.

The posts, I'll write will be completely based on my understanding. I might be wrong, so feel free to make comments, and correct me. As there’s always some chance of improvement. :-)

Why all airplanes are painted white?

Painting an Airbus airplane needs 1100kgs of paint, and just printing the logo needs around 500kgs of paint. So, if no paint is used, the plane can carry 5 more passenger’s weight with same structure. 

So question is why does an airline company paints the airline, when it is increasing the operating cost.

Even the airline company used to think so earlier, and they didn’t use to paint their flights. But because of bad weather, and exposure of direct metal to atmosphere used to degrade the surface, which needed to be polished.

The polishing cost used to come higher than painting cost. So they started painting it white, after putting a green anti-corrosive paint.

White paints helps in detecting any dent or issue in flight, just by a simple pre-flight inspection, and also helps in getting better resale value. Not only this, it helps in identifying plane during rescue operation due to its high reflectivity. It also maintains temperature, because of high reflectivity.

Valentine’s day. Well many of us might be thinking on this day, if they could move time backwards.

Well, moving time backwards pictures my mind with a clock dial moving anti-clockwise.

But what is this clock-wise and anti-clockwise? Who decided, which is clock direction, and which is anti to it.

This decision was actually influenced by the early sundials. In the northern hemisphere, sundials trace an east-to-west route through south. As most of the civilizations grew around northern hemisphere, when initial clock were developed, the sundial shadow movement direction was considered as clock direction. This got adopted across the world as clock-wise direction.

Fun fact: In southern-hemisphere, a sundial shadow would move in east-to-wast direction through north, i.e., anti-clockwise direction.
