• The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

20/10. I never like recommending books, nor taking recommendations, however I was recommended this by a teacher of mine and now I'm recommending it to anyone who is reading this. The story was good, the characters were so human, and all in all I just enjoyed it. The concept is also one that I've just meber heard before, but when I read about what the bookw as about I was just like "Of course, how has this not been written before?"

• To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

6/10. Didn't like it, but didn't hate it. Would I recommend it to people? Probably not :/

• Death Note Volumes 5-6

• Japanese Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edogawa Rampo

9.5/10, .5 was taken off because the descriptions during The Caterpillar genuinely disturbed me. I'm usually okay with body horror (is that what that was?) but just. . . . There was something about it that disturbed me. Other than that, wonderfully written. I was able to solve the "mystery" ones rather quickly, but despite that I still enjoyed them quite a lot.

Well, this is quite interesting you’re the first to ask about the other possibilities, but I’m not complaining. I’ll be happy to talk about this! For most of my matchups I usually go through a million options for people. I’ve even given someone one of the NPCs and Yuu before too, it was a similar case for you. 

I thought about how you said you liked team coffee and felt you belonged in team strawberry. That’s what put the idea in my mind that you would pair well with Cater Diamond for a lover. I find that those who like team coffee the most like drama, since Cater is a member of team mint, he would bring that out. Meanwhile, I gave you Jack for a friend to balance that craziness that is Cater. However, it didn’t feel right to me. 

I took a day off to watch Bungo Stray Dogs since their new season is coming and I wanted to re-watch all their seasons. As I watched the relationship between Rampo and his boss, Fukuzawa, I thought back to you. Rampo reminded me of you as you both seem to march to the beat of your own drum. Plus, you’re both stubborn yet carry an air of lightheartedness. I noticed the two took value from each other to become the pair that they are now. Taking that idea into account I went back to the drawing board for you. 

I looked over the list of people and felt a strong pull towards Pomefiore and Ignihyde as the two dorms who would bring value into your life. Vil is someone who naturally is attracted to those who act on their own. Which I predict is because those kinds of people are the ones who he is the most comfortable to be around. Such as Rook who behaves as oddly as he does and Epel who had no filter before meeting Vil. I could be wrong about this but, I get the feeling you’re like Rook and Epel in that aspect. Whereas Idia is someone who likes calm, but close-knit relationships. So, if you’re close to Idia then he would receive a newly formed friend and Vil would have someone who would be comfortable around him. 

I really wanted to give you Divus Crewel for a lover and Sam for a friend too, but I wasn’t sure if you were a minor. I actually chose them first. Anyway, your matchup ended with Vil and Idia because of Bungo Stray Dogs. Thank you for participating in this matchup!

Get the story done already! (5/? - Friends)

I’ve already started fleshing out one of Carol’s friends (Smart Guy), as they became important to the story (With Noble), so it’s not a bad idea to begin looking at the rest of them.

I spoke previously about using the five-man band template, and going from there:

Leader: Carol Valentine (As the face). Carol is the best at operating the Mecha, and is the second-best at its maintenance and upgrades.

Lancer: This guy is probably the actual leader, or at the very least they publicly have them as the leader. I think that he’s more of a cat-herder (Like Horatio in Watch Dogs 2). Given their combat abilities, if anyone assumes that the Lancer must be Cherry Bronze, they’ll be able to hold them off until the real Cherry Bronze can arrive. I think that the lancer should be a guy, or at least a different gender than Carol, if only to make it obvious that they’re not Cherry Bronze. Although, someone might overthink things (Like I did with a Red X theory a while back…) and assume that they use some sort of voice modification as Cherry Bronze to throw people off. Cherry gets irritated that she didn’t think of doing that, but alas and alack the Lancer is not Cherry Bronze. In order for this gambit to work, Carol and Lancer have to have a lot of trust in each other. By definition, the Lancer should be more of a foil, but I think this should be more complementary than conflicting. Normally, Carol is Lancer’s secretary, and on the field, Lancer is mission control for Cherry. Lancer is probably the team’s best communications expert. I don’t know if I want to make them the best hacker, but they are definitely better than Carol. Lancer is actually a better fighter than Carol (Obviously still worse than Cherry), but isn’t better than the Big Guy.

A bold, classic heroic sounding name (Brock, Clark, Adam) would probably be best for this guy. Carol is subtle, but the Lancer is blunt. I also like the idea of using an older, family name. I kind of want to call this guy Kenneth, like Wild Weasel’s fake name back in the Phoenix Guard. So he’s Kenneth.

Big Guy: They’re a lean, mean, fighting machine! Except probably not lean, and not a machine. They can be mean, though, I don’t really want another teddy bear (I prefer to play against type or reinvent it, if possible). I haven’t even determined a setting, so I’m going to decide that being nonbinary in my world is normal. I guess Mark fought in Vietnam, but honestly I can probably change that part of the story to “Mark’s family died fighting evil alien bad guys” or something.

I also like the way Voltron went in not making the Big Guy an idiot. But at the same time, I don’t necessarily want to expand the trope in the same way. I don’t really have anyone set aside as a chemical expert yet, so let’s make the Big Guy the chemical/explosives expert. They might be more on the forensic science side. Maybe they’re an actual detective? A private eye for the agency? Carol Valentine is more of a talker/diplomat for information, but the Big Guy is the master detective who can analyze the enemy’s plans and movements to uncover conspiracies. The Big Guy and the Chick are likely friends- the Chick might be more of a Dark Action Girl, the comic relief with underground contacts- perhaps a reformed criminal? This is veering off-topic a little. The point is, that the Big Guy is a detective and a forensics/explosives expert.

As for names, we know detectives like Dupin, Poirot, Columbo, Holmes, Clouseau, etc. I’m already drawing inspiration from Detective Conan, so why not use a name from Japanese detective fiction? Rampo, instead of Edogawa. Rampo also sounds tough, like a ram. Interestingly enough, Rampo is itself a play on Edgar Allen Poe. So nobody can get mad at me for copying when the original Rampo copied his name. I’ll also use Rampo instead of the more accurate Ranpo simply because “m” seems tougher to me than “n,” for whatever reason. Probably the rams.

Smart Guy: The Smart Guy is the best there is at upgrading the Mecha, hacking, and probably most of the science stuff that goes into their agency. Although I dislike not playing with type whatsoever, I think the Smart Guy has to be a wimp on this team- I have too many people who are good at fighting and I don’t really want the Chick to be the weakest one (Emotional intelligence does not equal physical weakness!). So if I can’t play against type, then I’ll go all in on the Smart Guy. He’s the smartest smart guy there is, but a mean-looking squirrel with a rock could kill him. This also adds tension with Mr. Noble, since because Noble isn’t really the nerdy type, he’s probably fit and has some combat expertise. The Smart Guy is not going to be able to beat Noble in a physical fight, even if he gets the drop on him.

I think that instead of being concerned about his physical weakness, the Smart Guy either overestimates himself (Like Steve Rogers before his steroids in Captain America), or simply doesn’t even think of it as a concern. Maybe he doesn’t even think that going on the battlefield is a possibility. He’s likely a basement-dweller, but not an introvert. He’s extroverted and easy-going, even with strangers, but is very focused on work and thus can spend several days without human contact (Or maybe even eating) when he finds a new project, or gets inspired. He might have a genuine trust in the good will of others- perhaps the Smart Guy is taking on more of the Nick Valentine traits than Carol is. Are they siblings? I think that the Smart Guy should be Carol’s big brother. He probably also has a code name- Victor Valentine, because he likes alliteration. This is apparently an online tweed suit store, according to google, but there are several real people who have this name. I think that a character in a mecha story and a vendor of tweed suits are distinct enough that the IP shouldn’t be an issue, and I won’t be confusing any readers.

Chick: From developing the others, we know that the Chick isn’t physically weak, she’s emotionally intelligent, more of a criminal type, and possibly comic relief. She’s the rogue of the group, the lock-breaker. Victor might be the better hacker, but the Chick will just look at the post-it on the monitor to enter in the password, or maybe investigate the victim’s pet names for password clues. She comes from the poorest socio-economic background, and can keep the team grounded and focused on the real issues the city faces (The nation? I’m a little unclear on the setting’s scale, still). She’s able to connect with the criminal underground not because of her tough attitude, but because of her willingness to listen. She’s the kind of person strangers will open up to, although at times she finds it annoying to hear about a fellow bus passenger’s divorce issues. She has a lot of random skills, and is a quick learner, although she gets bored easily studying one thing for too long. She’s got the least formal expertise, and is able to do a lot of things but not describe the theory, or use the proper jargon.

She’s got a mean personality like Rampo, but unlike them, is far more willing to open up to others and be patient. I’m not sure what to do with her on names. I’m tempted to go with a more neutral name, like Alex, at the risk of seeming tacky. Maybe Lexa? I don’t think there’s very many Lexa’s, most people are Lexi if they shorten it that way. It also feels a little more modern, and I think that Lexa and Victor are all about the cutting-edge.

 So in conclusion, the heroes are Carol Valentine/Cherry Bronze, Kenneth, Rampo, Victor Valentine, and Lexa. The villains are Aqua Black and Mr. Noble. Though I’m seeing an immediate problem with the names, at least with the heroes. All the names have two syllables. This is a no-go.

Victor can be Victoria (And we’ll make him a her instead, now). Lexa can be “Lee.” I may as well go all in if I’m on the fence about choosing a more neutral name for the character without seeming tacky or cliché. Kenneth can be called “Ken” by his friends. That gives us two (three?) two-syllable names (Rampo, Carol, Cherry), two one-syllable names (Ken, Lee), and one four-syllable name (Victoria). That should be enough for us to avoid the names starting to blend together. I also prefer a more “regal” name like Victoria contrasted with Mr. Noble. Cherry Bronze and Aqua Black are fine having the same word-syllable structure since their similarities are supposed to be recognized. Mr. Noble is the only one called by his last name, which should ‘feel’ different.

Next time, I think we’re ready to start looking at the character dynamics a bit more in-depth. This will open up opportunities for stories.

Get the story done already! (9/? - Season 0.5 outline)

So I should probably start planning out the actual writing, now. I have enough information to create a story, or at least enough for a starting point. I will inevitably come up with new ideas as we go along.

If we do this season by season (Although I am going to do strictly text, at least for now), then I should worry about the first ½ season. Let’s say we go with 7 stories. I mentioned earlier about the classic 5-episode pilot, but I think it should be 2-3 for this one since we’re only doing a half season and I don’t want the entire thing to be about the first episode.

This is what I want out of each episode/chapter/etc:

Pilot. Organization is up to no good. Mr. Noble might not be in this one, since he’s behind the scenes, but he and the BBEG leader of the organization might be silhouetted, mysterious people.

Pilot (part 2!) Mr. Noble shows up.

Enemies/threat outside of the organization

Introduction of Aqua Black

Organization appears once more!

Maybe Aqua Black? Threat outside of the organization.

Aqua Black appears again? Major turning point in the overall ‘arc’ of the season. Things are not yet resolved, but a major conflict has happened and introduced new trouble for the heroes. The organization is here. Mr. Noble is here. There can be a cliffhanger here, but it may not be necessary if we build up enough tension.

You know, I never solidified the rest of the organization’s structure. I’ll use my Chaos Commander idea for the leader (Even if that’s not their name). To recap, my “Chaos Commander” is essentially Cobra Commander, if he was in Storm Shadow’s position and forced to be the leader of this organization bent on world domination.

Since Chaos’s motivation is to escape, but in the meantime is to survive, the organization itself is really more like the villain. Dr. Noble is likely one of Chaos Command, a group of self-serving backstabber dragon/lieutenants who run the organization. They only agree that Chaos should rule, mostly because all of them believe that they can manipulate Chaos, and because Chaos is the only leader who’s actually been able to get things done. Perhaps Chaos was once a legitimate member of the organization, and left out of guilt. The lieutenants didn’t mind at first, and fought each other for supremacy in the resulting power vacuum, but severe losses in the organization led them to the conclusion that Chaos is the only one that could keep things going.

World domination is so easy of a goal for the organization. However, I’ve previously stated that I don’t want to beef up the scale too much. They could simply be the largest criminal syndicate in the city- maybe they have been able to set themselves up so well because of their technological prowess? This isn’t Earth, so organized crime being in broad daylight like this (Even outside of the Cobra-esque types of organized crime we see today) could be ‘normal.’ Most modern organized crime relies heavily on the internet anyways, so this is just taking it a step further and using other cool scifi tech.

I think I’ll call the organization Fury Web, that’s the name of the secret society of supervillains/legion of doom/injustice league that I had for my last project I never finished.

Speaking of old projects, another one was the Gilded Thief- started out as a Red X fanfiction/expy. Basically, when the thief goes to sleep, their dream self, the Gilded Thief, commits crime. I’m not so hot on having superpowers in this story, so how about instead, Lee is using a robot (Which she is controlling via VR through her thoughts) to commit crime. In a Red X moment, she teams up with Cherry Bronze (Who was investigating her) to thwart a greater evil- white collar crime! (I might come up with something better. Trafficking? I haven’t really discussed a target age-range, but this might be a bit dark compared to the rest of the stuff.) And perhaps this is how Lee gets introduced to the organization. Maybe Rampo could be part of the same episode- they are initially a private investigator tracking down the Gilded Thief, but they don’t have the combat expertise to take her down. They meet up with Cherry, and they combine Cherry’s combat capabilities with their investigative work in order to find the Gilded Thief. Was the Gilded Thief being blackmailed all along, maybe some crime lord or middle-management organization member has kidnapped her brother/girlfriend/mother/etc. Perhaps Lee reformed long ago, but never gave up her robotics hobby (Despite stipulations in her parole). This is a good idea for episode 3, especially since Rampo and Lee are supposedly ‘late-comers.’ It’s actually Rampo’s difficulty in tracking down Cherry when they need her that prompts the agency’s public office.

Of course, this means that in the pilot, there needs to be some sort of Cherry Bronze vs organization live fight. And when Aqua Black learns of the public office, then of course he shows up and attacks it (Exploiting the obvious flaw in a hero’s main hub being accessible to the public).

Get the story done already! (6/? - Interpersonal Relations)

Character dynamics and interactions are the bread and butter of the story. I find it hard to create conflicts and action without knowing a little bit about how the characters interact. Sure, most of the time, the conflict is going to arise from good guys vs bad guys scenarios, but some of the more interesting and memorable stories come from conflicts that might not be clear-cut, or that might have more interesting relationships and backgrounds. “Hero fights bad guy” isn’t as intriguing as “Hero fights bad guy who used to be their friend” or “hero fights brainwashed friend,” or even “hero fights bad guy who secretly harbors a crush on the hero.” You get the idea.

In fact, even when describing characters, especially villains, we already have an idea of some of the relationships:

Aqua Black fought alongside the original Cherry Bronze, their sister, as a hero. However, Aqua Black is no longer a hero, and the new Cherry Bronze is a mystery. Aqua wants to discover Cherry’s identity, and is impacted by the pain of loss that has not healed. Cherry’s identity is tied both to his new family he found on Earth, and to his home world. Carol found the Cherry Bronze mecha, and doesn’t completely understand its origins. She is startled to find someone else using a mecha, and although she wants to learn things from him she also can’t allow acts of villainy. Her gambit also requires secrecy in regards to her real identity, because Cherry Bronze has a limited energy source and she can’t be in it all of the time. Her agency is small, and overall even though it keeps up a public store front she can’t give resources to protect the safety of the agency’s members at their homes. It may be possible for Aqua and Cherry to reconcile and exchange much-needed information, but Aqua’s pain and Cherry’s skepticism prevent this.

Mr. Noble, a criminal, is primarily an enemy of the agency. His opposite number is Victoria Valentine, who he respects, but primarily wishes to get information or inspiration out of. He has no problem killing anyone, even Victoria, but would prefer to coopt Victoria into his organization (The Rouge-black organization? Probably not, it would confuse things with the mecha names), be it through diplomacy, brainwashing, blackmail, kidnapping and torture, etc. Victoria cannot abide someone who hurts others. So overall, their conflict is far more clear-cut than that of Aqua and Cherry.

Rampo, a detective, and Lee, a rogue-type with criminal connections, are the “odd/mismatched friendship” of the group. I like the “vitriolic best buds” trope so that will likely be how this works out. I also find it interesting when the “heart” of the group gets petty and has a conflict with someone, when normally they tend to be the more patient and empathetic one. Conflicts between these two may depend on external pressures.

Victoria and Carol are sisters. Victoria is the older sister- that’s why she got the alliterative name. Carol’s more of the tougher, protective one, despite Victoria being the oldest, so this may cause conflict.

Carol and Ken trust each other a lot. This is surprising, seeing as Carol’s plans rely on a lot of secrecy and a healthy dash of paranoia. I’m noticing now that I did another “oops” as I have 2 names with a “k-“ sound in the main characters, but since it’s a C and a K, and they have different syllable structures, I think I can get away with it. Ken should be short for Kennedy, not Kenneth, to preserve this difference.

This might be enough to go off of for identifying a few good conflicts, but I’ll go through the rest of the “handshakes” to see if any other ideas arise. Carol/Cherry’s relationships are the most important (Since she’s the main character), so I’ll worry about those for now. Everyone at the agency is in on the secret, I don’t want to play the game of “loved one doesn’t know about my secret life.”

Cherry & Aqua: We’ve already gone over this. I think that at first, Cherry might try to have a conversation, but Aqua has a bit of a temper (Given his Mira traits, he’s likely a bit of a blood knight), or maybe is just impatient. Aqua might think it’s a better idea to restrain Cherry and get the pilot out to figure out her identity, since Cherry Bronze might be unwilling to talk about personal details in the middle of the street. Aqua probably gets back into the mecha after seeing Cherry on tv thwarting some crime, which is why he commits a crime (He wants to draw her out). Perhaps this is what leads to Carol & co. getting a public-facing front for their agency.

Carol & Aqua: Not Cherry Bronze, Carol. This is an important distinction, as one of the key points in their relationship is that Aqua is unaware of Carol being Cherry. I imagine they might interact if Aqua shows up to the agency looking for Cherry (Or maybe Mark, if he’s attempting to be subtle). This would lead to shenanigans, as maybe Mark has a better idea as to who Cherry is than other villains.

Carol & Noble: These two would interact more so than Cherry and Noble, simply because even though I don’t see Noble as a wimp, he’s not really a front-line guy either. Noble is more of a ‘face’ for his organization as well, so at the very least he attempts to keep his hands clean. Perhaps Carol’s agency has conflicts with local law enforcement as well. So these two are tacitly allowed in public without fear of arrest, but both have things they must keep secret.

Cherry & Noble: Cherry would bulldoze Noble in a fair fight, so Noble is constantly coming up with new weapons and warriors to take her down. He also wants the blueprints of the mecha, and would love to get a chance to take the mecha apart and coopt it for organization use.

Carol & Ken: They probably were the first two to find the mecha. Their mutual trust likely comes from founding the agency. On the outside, it seems like Ken is the boss and Carol’s the secretary, but there isn’t a power difference here, even taking into account that Carol’s Cherry. Now that I think about it, in the hypothetical hostage negotiation with the organization, the organization might be a little bit irritated that Carol shows up, not Ken, and Carol might give a vague “He’s preoccupied” to further feed into their gambit. I don’t want these two to date (I don’t really want anyone to date, honestly), since this romantic dynamic has been done to death. Ken and Carol are childhood friends, so Ken probably knows Victoria, too. I’m not sure if I want to give Ken and Victoria an antagonizing relationship or not.

Carol & Victoria: This was already covered. Victoria’s a hermit extrovert, so with Carol as the face I feel that she’s more of an introvert and enjoys her moments of solitude, even if she’s a bit of a ham as Cherry. Victoria is probably the first person Carol and Ken bring the mecha too, and she’s the one who’s able to get it open. Carol’s the only one who can see the interface, though, due to her tetrachromia.

Another thing I just thought of: If Teri, Mark and their parents were all able to operate the mecha, everyone in the family has tetrachromia (And is therefore XX). Aqua is probably confused that not all humans are XX, or tetrachromats, until he discovers that not all humans are capable of using a mecha. I suppose Teri would have to be adopted by one or both parents, but obviously if they’re fine with adopting Mark the alien this isn’t really an issue for them. I think that Teri never had a human brother, and maybe Mark was adopted into the family without the need of another’s death. I like the idea of the classic “Mom, Dad, Son, Daughter” family of heroes, so I’ll keep that, just using the alien Mark as the son.

Ken’s color-blind (A dichromat), so it’s not until they bring the mecha to Victoria for her to look at that they realize that only Carol can use it. The tetrachromia is probably still a secret, since most people don’t get tested for it unless they are specifically part of a study. Maybe Mr. Noble’s the first one to realize it, if he gets a look at the mecha, since he’s also colorblind and is used to having to use glasses or filters to see certain things, especially on alien technology.

Carol & Rampo: I feel as though Rampo and Lee aren’t founders, but came on later as the agency gained its public front and started to look more into what its capabilities were. Perhaps a humorous interviewing montage would be called for?
