Summary: How to parent a genius: A guide by Oscar Piastri.

Notes: Because I felt like it was very mean to just give you "half" a new piece of writing, with an edited version, here you have some fluff!

Oscar had long since accepted that he was raising a genius.

It wasn’t the kind of genius that screamed for attention or rattled off multiplication tables at age two (though she could, and did, if she was annoyed enough). No, Bee’s genius was different—patient, precise, methodical in a way that sometimes made Oscar forget she was still learning how to tie her shoes consistently.

At the moment, she was halfway through assembling the LEGO® Technic Ferrari Daytona SP3—3,778 pieces, ages 18+, and she was building it upside down just for fun.

Oscar had found it complicated enough to need a YouTube tutorial and was now trying to attach one very specific connector piece. It was not going well.

“Papa,” Bee said gently, not even looking up from her own section, “that axle doesn’t go there. It’s a two-length, and you’re using a three. That’s why the gearbox won’t sit flat.”

Oscar blinked. “How do you see that?”

She shrugged. “I counted the ridges.”

Of course she had.

He changed the piece, and—miraculously—it clicked into place.

They were seated on the living room rug, surrounded by plastic trays of sorted bricks and half-finished subassemblies. 

Oscar had tried giving her a kid’s set once this year. Something with animals. She’d built it in seven minutes, asked him if it was a prank, and requested the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 next.

He looked at her now—curled over her build instructions, her tongue poking out slightly in concentration, tiny fingers moving with frightening efficiency—and wondered, not for the first time:

How do you race a kid like this?

Not race in the literal sense.

 Race in the life sense.

How do you raise someone who could probably code her way into a Mars rover before she loses her first tooth?

 How do you parent brilliance?

Oscar loved her completely. That part was easy.

 But raising her… it sometimes felt like trying to build IKEA furniture with the instructions written in Latin while she translated them into quantum theory beside you.

When Bee was two, he’d brought home a simple Lego castle. The 5+ kind. Pink turrets. Smiling bricks. It had taken her twenty-four minutes. No instructions. One correction.

They moved to the 10+ sets after that. Then 12+. 16+.

Now they didn’t bother with age labels. If it didn’t come with multiple gear assemblies and at least two bags of axles, she got bored.

He leaned back, stretching out his legs as she sorted bricks with the focus of someone solving a global crisis. Her curls were pulled back in a lopsided ponytail, and she was humming to herself—some hybrid of Beethoven and the Paw Patrol theme. A mix of classical and chaos. Just like her.

And Oscar found himself smiling.

 “Do you think you’ll want to build real cars one day?”

Bee paused. Thought. “Maybe. Maybe I’ll restore cars like Mama does. I like knowing why something works. Why people make the choices they do.” She looked up at him. “I like your choices.”

Oscar’s heart stuttered in his chest.

“You do?”

She nodded. “You always come home. Even when you go far.”

He swallowed. 

Bee smiled, then reached for another piece, her tiny hands precise. “Mama said you have to go race soon.”

“Yeah. In Japan.”

She nodded. “Don’t forget my shirt.”

Oscar smiled, eyes crinkling. “Never.”

They worked in silence for a while. The only sounds were the click of Lego pieces and the distant hum of the dishwasher.

Oscar watched her move—steady, focused, brilliant. She didn’t fidget. Didn’t question herself. She just knew what she wanted to build and made it happen.

He was raising a genius.

 And not just the kind with facts in her head—though there were plenty. She had empathy. Precision. Curiosity.

And she scared the hell out of him.

 In the best way.

The thing was, Bee wasn’t just smart. Lots of kids were smart. Bee was something else entirely. Curious in a way that never stopped. Observant in ways that made you feel like she could see under your skin if she tilted her head right.

She didn’t just memorize—she understood.

She asked how DRS worked when she was two and followed up with, “But doesn’t that affect battery deployment?”

She once looked at telemetry on Oscar’s laptop and said, “Why are you lifting before Turn 9 now?” and then told him why when he didn’t answer fast enough.

And somehow, she still wanted him to sit beside her while she built things. Still curled up under his arm during movie night. Still called him Papa like it was magic.

Oscar ran a hand through his hair, watching her snap together a section of bricks like she'd been born doing it.

“How’d you get so smart?” he asked softly.

Bee didn’t even pause. “Because you and Mama never make me feel weird for asking questions.”

Oscar blinked. His throat tightened.

“You don’t get mad when I want to read the building manual instead of the storybook,” she continued, turning the model gently to check the incline. “And Mama says it’s okay to love logic and glitter.”

Oscar nodded slowly, words caught somewhere between pride and awe.

He watched her now, slotting in a gear mechanism with tiny fingers and utter focus, her brow furrowed like a seasoned engineer.

How do you raise a kid who’s already looking three steps ahead?

Who watches a race and times pit stops with a stopwatch app she downloaded herself?

 Who reads two books a week and corrects the science in children's cartoons?

You don’t try to match her, Oscar thought.

You just show up.

You sit on the floor and sort the bricks. You listen when she talks about dolphins and binary code in the same breath. You answer every question, no matter how bizarre. You fold the shirts. You build the drawer. You take her seriously, because she always takes you seriously.

“Papa?”

Oscar looked up. “Yeah?”

Bee held up a completed axle assembly, expression bright. “Do you want to click this piece into place?”

He smiled. “Will you judge me if I get it wrong again?”

“Only a little.”

“Deal.”

He snapped the piece in. She double-checked it, nodded solemnly, and handed him the next one.

Oscar didn’t know how to raise a genius.

But he was learning how to build with one.

 Moment by moment.

 Brick by brick.

as a father

jake would be such a good father, just like with his partner, he would be the most supportive and caring father. he would spend lots of time with his kid, just the wo of them, and would defo be the 'nice' parent, getting them everything they want, not bearing to go against their cuteness.

he would also be a very good husband, not leaving you with kids chores at all , tho to him it's not chores, marriage + kids will not be hard with him. he will make them bath or make them brush their teeth with lots of laugher. lots of naps and cuddles will happen, specially with you and layla.

he would soft parent as well, but it will come naturally as he ain't coming from a toxic household. he won't shy away from loving them and accept their 'differences'.

boy dad

jake would be so so so happy to have a little boy to play with. he would play basket ball and soccer together, all the time. he would even annoy you and play with the ball in the house, too excited to really care at the moment. and playing with jake also means, lego play with his son or making constructions, like circuit to build to play with little cars.

fishing would also be a thing, almost every week after friday classes or on saturday's, going night/morning finishing with his son and have lots of laughter or deep talks.

obvsiouly jake is a little nerdy, so using his physic and math acknowledges and if his son is into it, they will be making robots. all the science homeworks will also give him an excuse to stay with his son as well ᵎᵎ going to science fair or museums, together on school breaks

girl dad

jake would be the softest to his daughter. he would definitely raise her as his little a princess : get her verything she wants and won't be able to actually punish her if she does something bad.

regardless of the gender, lego will also be played w his cute daughter. but this time it would be more 'girly' or for his daughter taste. he will play barbie's with her, and help her make their clothes.

he will do tea parties with her and her plushies, or accept all of her makeup tutorial on him. instead of going fishing, he would take her in lots of picnic/restaurant dates and have talks there. going on shopping is also a must, spoiling his little girl.

A progression of my fandoms from early childhood to now (I just think it’s funny how I slowly went from typical girly-girl interests to being a theatre kid/geek 😂):

Peppa Pig - Since I was a toddler, basically, this show taught me to speak

Disney Princesses (specifically Belle) - From the time I gained sentience to around the time I turned 12, Disney princesses were my favourite thing, but whilst I still have a fondness for them now, they’re not my favourite thing anymore

Jessie/Liv and Maddie/KC Undercover - From the ages of I’d say 10 to 12, they were my favourite Disney channel sitcoms, they made me laugh so hard and even though I watch them much now, I still really enjoy them if I’m feeling nostalgic

Lego Ninjago - Found it on Netflix and got hooked, can’t remember how old I was, maybe 7-8? My time as a fan of this didn’t last that long, but it did teach me how to spell the word ‘nephew’ (I watched everything with subtitles to help with my spelling)

Descendants - I distinctly remember being a mega fan as soon as the first film came out, I was 8 and I’ve seen every single piece of Descendants media and read one of the books, the fourth movie disappointed me when I did a nostalgia watch

Ever After High - Discovered this show on Netflix shortly after Descendants, remember loving it and being devastated when it ended but can’t remember exactly how old I was

Musical theatre - I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but the day I watched a Watch Mojo countdown of the best musical villain songs in the back of the car whilst on holiday and googled Heathers the musical’s plot, I knew in my heart that I’d never go back… I was definitely far too young though

Team Starkid/Hatchetfield - Long story short, I discovered them in lockdown when I was 13 whilst looking for ‘slime tutorials’ of other musicals, and I’ve been hooked ever since

Marvel/MCU - I watched Wandavision during lockdown when I was 13 so I could talk about a popular show, actually enjoyed it then fell down a rabbit hole of researching and watching everything from the MCU, and I still love it

Chucky - I found the Kill Count YouTube channel in 2021 - I was 14 - and thought the Chucky movies were so fun, and so I wrote some of my first ever fanfic about it (I’m sure some of my friends here remember 😅)

Doctor Who - Blame David Tennant, I developed a major crush on him around the end of 2022, and I decided to watch the 2023 Doctor Who specials with him and Catherine Tate, then my mother and I watched every episode starting from Eccleston up to Gatwa, now we’re on Pertwee in the Classic Era having skipped half of Hartnell and pretty much all of Troughton 😅

Franky: large following, posts crafting, woodwork, maintenance, diy, etc etc. builds a lot of gundams on camera and a lot of people like that? he basically just builds stuff (legos, robots, cars) and talks about cola and everyone loves him

Brook: music, of course. covers, original songs, tutorials; has a MASSIVE following and likes to collaborate with his friends for the occasional daily vlog

Racing Games: Vehicle Designs: Bonus Research:

One important thing I wanted to look at was vehicle designs like Transitions or Customisation when making your own vehicle. I have looked at multiple games that all include things like this to see what could be possible for my game.

The Crew: Vehicle Transitions for opening tutorial: In this game, the player goes through the tutorial sequence. This is clever as this game uses not only cars but other vehicles like boat and planes. In the tutorial sequence I really like the animations as well as camera transitions for when the player switches to a different vehicle type.

Mario Kart: Kart Customisation: This game uses vehicles customisation so the player can build their perfect vehicles with no limits. There are three sections to this: Body, Wheels and Glider. There is also an option that allows the player to actually view the stats of each option in these categories. This helps the player to actually build the perfect car for their race. I won't get the time to make something like this but this would be another cool thing to try and discover how to make in the future.

Lego Races 1999: Making your own Lego Car from scratch: This game immerses the player in what they're making by using a similar customisation technique to Mario Kart. They use separate Lego pieces and give the player full freedom to design a player character as well as their own vehicle. This was one of the first boundaries broken for car design and this allowed other games to try and make this possible for realistic vehicles.

Gran Turismo 7: Detailed Vehicle Designs: When you think of triple A Racing Video Game, you think of Gran Turismo. This game's car designers are able to not only have the time to create realistic existing car designs but also make their own visions of how these car companies could look in the future. I really like this ability, as it gives the player a look at what the future of car design looks like. I have already designed and added my own player custom car but I want to now focus on gameplay so I won't add any more.

F1 2024: Different Car functions and settings: This game has it's own controller binding as well as calibration settings. The calibration settings help to adjust steering, throttle, braking with things like dead zones and linearity. This really allows the player to experiment with their car and feel immersed. This would be a cool key bind menu to add to my game so it can effect the car in game.

Some credit and annotations for my LEGO Bentley behind the "Keep reading" link...

Well, my version of Crowley's LEGO Bentley has been a work in progress for quite some time and I am still occasionally changing things around with custom (non-original LEGO) parts, so this whole beautiful car is a mixture of LEGO, COBI and GOBRICKS parts by now.

I started out with a wonderful MOC by Lego Ankh-Morpork from Rebrickable. Sadly the page seems to have been deleted by now, but I think/hope, that this Kofi page with the instructions is in fact the original creator's shop! I don't know for sure, though.

Anyway, since I am open to use parts from other brands, too, I started changing things around to my liking with pieces that aren't available from LEGO (or at least not in the necessary colors). For example, I really love these (smaller, better fitting and looking) wheels from COBI.

At a guess, there's less than half of the original instructions left in this Bentley by now, but I still want to give credit to Ankh-Morpork for the original tutorial.

The license plates are also custom printed by Briquestore. Their prints are great, especially if you need light colors printed on dark LEGO pieces. Highly recommended!

#16: LEGO 2K Drive

Okay, so you may have some questions about the finished date because that date is before the actual release date of the game. So what gives? Well, first, I acquired the Awesome Edition of this game from a trusted 3rd party site for Steam that allowed me to split the purchase up into three instalments rather than buying all the money upfront.

It's a pretty decent game all things considered, I didn't care very much for the story and found the voices to be a bit grating sometimes but exploring the world in a LEGO® car was pretty fun.

The one thing I don't agree on is the heavy monetization that 2K shoved into the game and it's kind of making me regret picking this up in the first place. At least the "battle pass" has no time limit, I guess, but I would not recommend paying full price for this game if you can help it. Maybe at a steep discount, y'know, like the Hot Wheels game.

Well, that's quite a bit to chew through there but Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer was a game that I played through not once, not twice, but thrice because I enjoyed it that much. Hell, I even bought it on Steam even though I could just play it on Game Pass because I felt like I was committing robbery by doing so, something that very few games on Game Pass has even managed to do with me (The other being Psychonauts 2 and HI-FI Rush, btw, the latter of which I still need to pick up for my Steam library someday).

I loved the aesthetic, the whole narmy edginess, and just about everything about it. Also when I initally posted my log entry to the bluebird hellsite, I was congratulated by the developer himself.

Thank you Zane, I'll be sure to put this on my fridge to remember this accomplishment for years to come.

#18: Street Fighter 6

What was finished? - World Tour Main Story, Classic Control Scheme

Now, when it comes to fighting games, I'm more of a platform fighter person, you'd see me playing Smash (maybe not as much since online has soured it for me) or Rivals of Aether more than anything else since I'm too stupid to play the original fighters.

Come Street Fighter 6 and it caught my attention right away with its bright graphics and peppy mood, as well as a custom character creator, which I set about doing to create Azie, whose last name I've yet to determine at this time of writing, because I wasn't too sure who to make an avatar of.

World Tour was pretty much a very glorified tutorial with a story that's kind of hit-or-miss but it's fun fighting goons out in the streets before taking on Luke from Streets™ to gain some style EXP for his fighting moves to equip to my avatar.

I loved it, what more can I say? Well, beside the fact that it finally taught me how to do some of the basic inputs for some moves without making me do a quarterback triple-kickflip to shove-it to manual on the d-pad.

Also played it all the way through with mostly Classic controls, because I wanted to.

#19: Unreal Tournament (1999)

What Platform? - PC, Steam (Game is unlisted, sadly, but I can still play it!)

Finished when? - 15/6/23

What was finished? - Campaign, Average difficulty

The reason? Nostalgia. Unreal Tournament '99 was one of the few FPS games that still sit in the back of my mind for me, and for good reason. In some ways, it feels better than UT2k4 and other ways, the latter is better, but UT99 is still great, even if it's a pain in the ass to get working on modern systems even with the funny fan patch.

#20: Chocobo GP

What Platform? - Nintendo Switch, the only platform that it's on at this time of writing (and probably gonna be there forever unless Squenix decides to port it to other systems)

Finished when? 21/6/23

When Square Enix re-released the game with ALL of its content packaged in and free from any battle pass bullshittery, I decided to reward them for once and... buy the physical copy because it was cheaper than buying digital at the time lmao.

But it was quite worth it because I felt like I would enjoy the game and the story mode, and I did, the only thing that was stopping me was the awful MTX and Battle Pass shit that really bogged the game down and made it a terrible grind.

Believe me, the game feels 10x better when you're not constantly grinding to get a character before time runs out. It's almost like they should've done that from day 1!

You can't tell me Logan and Cooper aren't dating. I mean, the whole situation is extremely dating coded. Cooper got a new boyfriend who Mateo doesn't get along with, therefore interfering with that friendship, but Cooper just doesn't know how to handle both at the same time. Clearly the boy is super stressed and way too busy for his own good, so he has zero mental energy to juggle those relationships. So, he sticks with the new boyfriend over his old friend at the beginning, before starting to find more of the value in his relationship with Mateo and trying to make both work. (Plus Logan is kind of a jerk a handful of times 😅)

Anywho, what actually triggered this thought was that I was watching the how to draw tutorials with Mateo on the Lego YouTube channel and the Croc Car one had Mateo talking about how, even though Logan doesn't have an hourglass, he can work with Cooper to channel himself into Cooper's creations. Just listen to that and tell me that they're not dating. You can't! Because they're absolutely together!
