Post-O66 Mace going into hiding as a pirate with a crew like Hondo's, is that anything?

I got a bunch of input on discord. Calling this one:

A bunch of pirates, a Jedi Master on the run, and a traumatized twelve-year-old.

Kicking off with a key part of it all is @atagotiak (Tia):

He’s annoying because he’s such a stick in the mud (by which I mean it’s rather inconvenient for a pirate crew when the new recruit has morals and stuff) But he’s too valuable to get rid of, due to having all that experience with administration

I am enamored with the idea of Mace's main job being just. Pirate Admin.

Mace: So this is what I am reduced to. Aiding and abetting… in tax evasion. Hondo: And piracy. Mace: The tax evasion is a bigger hit to my pride.

Tia:

The pirates are annoyed that despite him stopping them from going through with the more immoral (and lucrative) plans they’re still making more money than before

Pirates: How are we making more money now-- Mace: Have you heard of a budget.

okay but traditionally pirate ships have a quarter master who is high ranking, in charge of the bounty of every prize and therefore in charge of dividing everything up fairly like that could work really well lmaooo

The crew runs into Obi-Wan during the Leia incident and it's just time for "I can explain" on both ends.

Tia:

Hey, d’you think the pirates go after force sensitives? Mace managed to talk them into recruitment and/or relocation instead of selling to the empire. (And that’s another thing that could possibly have worked out better for them than the immoral option (not least because the empire doesn’t really treat its allies well)) Obi-Wan: and how are you dealing with Hondo’s… nonsense? Mace: eh, it’s not like he’s any worse than you or Yoda. (Mace is probably just messing with Obi-Wan. Probably)

Also I'm thinking that one of those initiates that Hondo let go(?) that one time finds them because a pirate might be likely to sell them out but they're demonstrably competent at evading arrest, so maybe-

Another thing Mace is good at is contracts He is. Painfully good at it. He doesn't enjoy it, but watching Hondo draft up a contract is almost painful. (Hondo is smart at this. He's clever. He's experienced. But he didn't take multiple classes on contract law.)

can we get a rundown on the anakin-raises-leia au? i’m totally in love with (read: obsessed with) it but i missed most of the context and i’m so curious!

are they coparenting? was it a parent trap style agreement to split the twins? is it temporary, until the war ends? who decided who gets which twin? did mustafar just never happen?

the answers to ur questions in short are: not really, arguably, absolutely, i did, and no!

in longer, the main thing you need to know for context is it's an Anakin-doesn't-turn-to-the-darkside-but-Palps-still-succeeds AU!

Anakin chooses not to try save Palpatine from the Jedi council and instead goes to Padmé's to angst abt the fact he might be losing her -- only to feel a very solid Other loss in the Force and see the temple up in flames ): he tries to go help but gets his shit kicked enough he leaves when Bail shows up

obi-wan and yoda both return to coruscant, obi-wan shows up to Padmé's to ask her hey do you know where Anakin is??? except Padmé's not there either bc after Sidious made his Big Speech anidala realised Anakin's totally a fugitive so they decided to Leave

i'm not 100% on what happens around here (lbr we all know my focus is the kids) but i'm currently thinking they nearly get caught or smthn, fight happens (??), Obi-wan gets there just in time to help thanks to Dormé snitching -- and Padmé goes into labour w the shock/stress

whatever exactly happens, Obi-Wan is there when they get Padmé to a medical station and the normal rots ending group unite. Padmé gives birth (keeping her will to live) and a question hangs heavy in the air: what are they supposed to do with the twins?

Anidala are too caught up in the joy of being parents to think about it, but they're quickly and forcibly snapped out of that when the Survivors all have a chat like canon. Yoda's the (brave) one to say they need to be apart because their force signatures would be too strong together and in the dire case Palps finds them, he could NOT take both. He's probs initially like they shouldnt even be kept w you two, Anakin's too powerful himself and Padmé you're too visible (while I imagine Bail and Obi-wan know their respective besties and are like king they are NOT gonna take that well)

and theyre right! Padmé, fresh out of like three of the top ten most harrowing experiences of her life, is like stfu u little green bitch im not losing my kids. but after some convincing she sees the need for her to remain in the senate and anakin's need to fight/run. she knows they can't fight the empire effectively together and she knows it's too dangerous to put the twins together. both parents want more than ANYTHING to be with their kids -- but they also don't want their kids growing up in a galaxy eaten by tyranny or being stolen by palps.

so they made the hardest goddamn decision of their lives and each take a twin (probably chosen on "anakin thought the baby'd be a girl/padme thought it'd be a boy" or smthn) and after some time planning their next moves, Padmé and Anakin are forced to go their separate ways to save the galaxy for and with their kids ): knowing the better they fight, the sooner they free the galaxy from the empire's clutches, the sooner they can reunite and be a family

My [ongoing] CodyWan Fic Masterlist

Hello! Sorry that this post is a little late, as I said in another post, I've been busy and it kinda got sidetracked--but it's here now!

This rec list isn't gonna be as long as the other one, since I haven't really had time to get into new fics (life stuff + the work of writing my own fic), but there a still a good chunk of them + a couple are series.

They're gonna be separated into "Ongoing" and "Abandoned" so that way you know what you're getting into and I'll put more info in the description--and yes, I'm recommending a couple abandoned works because I think they're still good and maybe with enough support the authors will decide to continue. Either way, they're good fics.

I seriously cannot rave enough about how awesome and well done this fic is, and no amount of me harping on it will ever do it thejustice it deserves. This fic has made me laugh, cry, get really pissed at the characters, and it has me waiting (im)patiently for every update--like, every single day I check Ao3 and it's just to check if this fic has updated.

It handles Jedi and Clone culture beautifully and adds in so much interesting world building, it perfectly balances out the fluff with the angst, it handles grief and PTSD very well, and so many other things! The author is also honestly just very sweet and even takes time out of his day to reply to as many comments as possible (which is insane, because there are always like 70+ comments on every chapter).

The Emperor and His Mandalorian by wanderingjedihistorian (RangerJedi67)

Technically I think this would be considered finished, but the author has added a new work to the series every couple months since I found it, so I'm adding it here just in case.

It's a Sith!Obi-Wan AU where Obi-Wan kicks Palpatine's ass and becomes Emperor and marries Cody, son of Manda'lor Jango Fett, as an agreement when Mandalore surrenders to him. I honestly really like how this fic handles Obi-Wan as a Sith and how that affects his actions and relationships with others, as well as Cody being a sort of "balance" for Obi-Wan's dark tendencies.

I'm not even a big fan of Sith!Obi-Wan fics, but this series is the one that got me to start reading some of them--so it definitely comes recommended!

This fic is a really interesting take on what would happen in TCW if Cody took more of an active role in the story. I love the author's take on Cody's character and how both his duty to his brothers and all the Kamino bullshit effects how Cody handles Obi-Wan and his feelings towards him.

Also the ending of the most recent update had me screaming and crying at my computer.

The art of living anyway by Itstwointhemorningwhyamiawake

A "Rex is Force-sensitive" fic that follows Cody and Obi-Wan's relationship as well. This fic is pretty new, so I don't really know where it's going, but the first two chapters have been amazing so far!

Abandoned

the sun is just a star by clementines_and_colorful_things

It's hard to give this fic a description that does it justice, but it's honestly really really good. It's basically a slow burn that follows Obi-Wan and Cody through TCW and, according to the tags, would eventually lead to Order 66 happening differently than in RotS.

More Than Blood by generalekenobi

Where Order 66 happens a bit differently and Cody and Obi-Wan end up on the run with baby Luke and Leia, having to masquerade as a Mandalorian couple to do so (uh-huh, yep, totally fake--them have feelings for each other? never).

I really love how this fic gives Cody agency and lets him go "no, we're not doing that, try again" and actually effect the story's outcome. It makes the story a lot more interesting and adds to the dynamic between Cody and Obi-Wan--both relationship-wise and in their newfound mission in taking care of the twins.

I Can Barely Recall (but it's all coming back to me now) by Shortcuts_make_long_delays

Ok, so I don't know if this fic is abandoned or just taking a while to update, so I just put it here--just be aware of that.

This is a Modern!AU where Cody and Obi-Wan used to date, but broke up due to something that keeps being hinted at but not overtly stated (and fuck, I just wanna know what happened! It's killing me!), and now Cody meets his ex "Ben" again when he turns out to be Obi-Wan, Anakin's older brother.

This fic is really interesting and well written and, like I said before, I really just want to know wtf the accident is--the suspense is killing me! Ahhhhhh!

Honorable Mention

An honorable mention for Not This Crude Matter by thebitterbeast

This fic was gonna be apart of the "ongoing" section, but the final part was posted like right after I posted my finished CodyWan rec list.

This series isn't just centered around Cody and Obi-Wan, but I still think it handles their relationship--and other relationships--beautifully. It centers mainly around Jedi culture and it's honestly one of my favorite takes on it. I can't recommend this series enough!

Shades in the Desert Force Ghost Anakin finding out that parenting is a lot harder when your baby is growing up on tatooine and he's the only who can see you

The kind that was burned first Obikin and the twins as babies time travelled and anakin gets the chance to be a parent. its got less dadakin than you'd want but its a good fic with the little bits it does have.

Jupiter Anakin raises the twins while hiding from the empire and its so precious i love it.

Shatterpoints Emperor Vader who raises his kids and ends up actually being good at the emperor bit cus he's purged the senate of every palpy supporter. Still Crazy Cakes but i think i'd describe his chara as a "good dictator" sjsjsjsjsj. very cute Leia and Luke moments im ngl.

HONESTLY omg obi-wan having to cater to the twins because he realizes anakin's loyalty is not 100% to palpatine but 1000000% to his kids so to get him to Fall would mean making the kids like him is literally a gold mine tbh

funny if the twins are ~10 (kenobi show age) and completely skeptical of obi-wan and also very critical of him being "just an older kid" (which makes anakin blush and stammer, and sets obi-wan back ten steps)

funny as well though if they're babies and obi-wan comms dooku when he's left alone with them and is like 'master there has been a complication the senator has CHILDREN' as one of them gummily gnaws on his perfect hair. and dooku is like 'hmmmmmm are they as powerful in the Force as their father?' only for luke to spit up all over obi-wan's silk robe and obi-wan to make an offended cat noise and go 'I THINK NOT.'

sort of tragic if jedi padmé got pregnant and just decided to have the twins but raise them in the creché without telling anakin he's a father so he has no idea they exist and obi-wan discovering them and telling anakin is the thing that makes anakin Fall because he believes now and firmly the jedi stole his babies

Delta Squared Chapter 1

A/N: So, this story is somewhat based off of Think Like a Man, I thought our favourite boys would fit these tropes quite nicely and wanted to write something fun and kinda silly! I hope can enjoy, even if you have seen the movie because I did make changes :) This will have several chapters, but hoping to keep it easy to follow. This chapter focuses on the boys and Benny. No smut, no warnings really except a few swear words. 2.4k words

It all starts sometime in May, the boys’ weekly outing causing the fates to set you up in front of the TV at just the right time. Well, sort of started then.

Benny emerges from the haven of the bathroom, immediately making a beeline for the boys’ table. Thankfully, the girl who seemed to be at his elbow at every turn was nowhere to be seen. Even halfway across the bar, Benny could see Santiago chatting up some poor unsuspecting woman and wonders to himself with amusement which line he went with this time, the player that he is. He’s ridiculously successful at this, always has been, even in their time in Delta Force, his ability to charm anybody and everybody driving the boys nuts. Frankie had apparently given up the tag team idea, and let him run his game, choosing to watch from the sidelines. 

Benny checks his phone to see if he got a text from you, sending one out asking how you’re feeling. He feels bad for leaving you at home, sick, but you had insisted he go out with the boys, claiming you’ll join them next time. You two had been dating for years now, bordering on 8, your relationship having been an undefined thing at first due to his back and forth in the military. Once he had come back for good, it was almost too simple how you two had made things official, falling into a routine as easy as breathing. But still… he hadn’t proposed yet. 

You were a relatively successful hairstylist, owned your own salon, got along with the boys, matched his energy for all the dorky movies he was into, and incredibly chill with his energy it was almost too good to be true. You even dressed up with him in a couples costume of Han and Leia that one halloween, binging the movies with him throughout the month to prepare for the role. So, you could be forgiven for mistaking the little velvet box he got you last valentines day for a ring, screaming out “Yes!” until you opened it to see a simple but pretty pair of diamond studs. You didn’t understand why he was waiting, you two lived together, shared a car, planned for your future; the domesticity of your relationship was so deeply ingrained in your bones, everyone already assumed you were married until they noticed the empty space where your ring should be. You didn’t want to pressure him, though. He was your Benny, your best friend, and you loved him so much. Star Wars posters, figurines, and all. 

You flipped through the channels at home, eventually landing on Oprah, recognizing her guest as Steve Harvey, the host from Family Feud. 

“Welcome back, everybody. We are still here with best-selling author Steve Harvey. (Camera switch to Steve) - Well, what I try to get women to understand is that times have changed, but your playbook hasn't. I've gotten thousands of letters from all kinds of women who can't seem to find a man, keep a man or get what they want from their man. Until you understand how a man loves, how a man operates, how he thinks, until you get into the mindset of a man, you will never win with us in the game of love.”

Despite your better judgement, you stayed on the channel to see what new information he could possibly be adding to the world of love advice.

“We have a question in the audience. (camera turns to woman in the audience)- Hi, Steve. I've been living with my boyfriend for five years and he says that he loves me and he's fully committed. I guess what I want to know is, how come he hasn't popped the question?- (camera turns to Steve) He hasn't popped the question because you haven't required him to.” 

You roll your eyes at the pedantic answer, but stay listening to see if you could get anything useful out of this.

Benny catches part of Santi’s words to the girl on his way to the table, and the tail end of it has him quickly covering his mouth to hide his laughter.

“I’m sorry, but Jesus has my heart.” The girl had said.

“Yeah, no, no, no, I get that. I love Jesus, too. They actually used to call me Pope back in the military,” Santiago countered, sure that he’d walk away with her number. 

“You boys won’t believe how Santi’s trynna pick up this girl,” Benny says, jerking his thumb over his shoulder as he joins the others at the table. 

“Oh I can already imagine it’s weird, she gave me crazy vibes just by the way she was trying to touch Tom’s beard after 2 seconds,” Frankie laughed. 

Santi returns to the table sooner than any of them would have guessed, and they assume he got shot down - rare, but it does happen. 

“No luck?” Will asks, a little eager to share his misery with someone else at the table. Will’s most recent venture into finding love ended as pathetically as his last; he was too much of a dreamer to keep a steady job after returning home. Apparently, the women he was going on dates with didn’t appreciate his goal of finding something he was passionate about. He just wanted someone to support him, the same way he would give his full support for his partner. 

Santiago looked at each of his friends’ faces and then broke out into a smug smile, “No, I got it. Cmon, you guys really thought I couldn’t? Have some faith.” 

The last comment had Benny cracking up again, and he checked his phone again to see if you’d replied. 

“How’s Daph doin’?” Will asks his little brother, eyes catching him checking his phone periodically. 

“She’s alright, she-” He starts but gets cut off by Fish.

“She's phenomenal, pendejo, we don’t understand why she’s with you,” Frankie laughs, and Santi joins in. 

“Nobody does! How good is your credit score? Do you even know how to check your credit score?” 

They all laugh at that, Benny included. 

“Daphne is amazing, you guys are right. She even loves my nerdy shit. Will doesn’t even like my nerdy shit,” Benny elbows his older brother. 

“You sure about that? Maybe she just loves you. Deep down inside, she’s probably thinking ‘this is some silly ass shit’” Tom counters with his eyebrows raised, challenging him. 

Out of them all, Tom had the least complicated relationship. He just wanted to make Madison happy, simple as that, and Mads felt the same towards him. He was usually the one giving level headed advice around the table whenever the boys would bring up their lady problems, and as much as they wouldn’t want to hear it at first, they usually conceded, knowing he was being reasonable. 

“Nah, I know her, alright? She is just as into all of that as I am.” 

The night goes on in a similar fashion, catching up and teasing, until Tom stands up, stating that he needs to get back to his fiancé, making the others groan in displeasure. 

“When's the wedding again, Tom? You’ll have all the time in the world, laaaaaater,” Santi gripes. 

“You guys still have to take me out for my Bachelor party, how do you not know when the wedding is? It’s next- No, you know what? You can figure it out and plan it when you’re sober, I’m heading out!”

They all chimed in for their goodbyes, knowing they’d see each other in a few days. Benny started to rise from his seat as well, finishing off the last of his beer before announcing his departure. 

“Gotta get back to my girl, she’s not feelin’ too well.” 

“Yeah, I should go, too, gotta pick up my kid from my mom tomorrow.” Frankie adds, also getting up from his place. 

Santiago and Will share a look which doesn’t go unnoticed by Frankie, who immediately gets defensive, “What?”

“Don’t lie to us Fish, you’re gonna go there tonight and she’s gonna give you your onesie and tuck you in the same way she does for your kid!” 

Santiago’s never let go of an opportunity to rip on Frankie’s relationship with his mother. Everybody knew he was a momma’s boy, but now he uses his daughter as an excuse for why he’s over all the time. She cooks all his meals, she does his laundry for him, they even have matching pyjamas which they wear on their movie nights together. He stops by on his way home from work because she’s made his favourite dish, or picked up those socks he likes from Costco. Santiago is only teasing but it’s become glaringly obvious that for all that he complains about being a single dad, Fish doesn’t really make time for another woman in his life. 

“Yeah, yeah, whatever, Pope. Don’t come asking for her pie next time you’re over.”

“Now hey-” Threats were getting serious, Santiago had to back up a bit.

The first bomb had been dropped. 

The next day had you heading to your local bookstore, with your notebook in hand, filled with scribbles of tips from Steve. You had finished the episode of Oprah, surprised to have found some possibly useful ideas to push Benny to the next step in your relationship. Looking for his book, you tell yourself you’re not tricking him, you’re just trying to move forward in your life together. 

Settling in to read for a bit before Benny came home, you found the chapter that focuses on “The Non-committer”, aka your Golden Retriever boyfriend, which described how you need to require him to step up and propose. Your last birthday, the boys came over for dinner; they treated you like one of their own, which was wonderful! Except that it was your birthday, and you were dressed for a romantic dinner for two. You really were one of the boys. Speaking of which, you looked around, noticing how much your shared apartment looked like a college dorm room, one that housed several boys, not the sophisticated adult space you always envisioned. You develop an idea, one that might upset him but that will overall clean up the place and make it look like two working adults live there. There’s a used bong on his favoured side of the couch for fuck’s sake. 

Yeah, that’s it, the first move has already formed in your head, your calculating gaze sweeping across your living room making note of what you’re going to keep and what’s going in storage. The couch will have to wait for another day, you can’t lift it on your own.

Later that evening, Benny comes home while you’re making dinner, chicken wings and fries - not your guilty mind telling you to make his favourite, nope - and his joyful shout at the smell makes your stomach twirl happily. After all these years, his easy smile and comforting presence is still your favourite thing in the world and you want to never stop seeing it. On his way to kiss your cheek in greeting, he catches a glimpse of the drastically different living room space and stops mid-walk, body visibly frozen in shock. 

“Babe! Did we get robbed?! Where’s all of my posters, my figurines?! How did you not notice we got robbed?!!” He’s rushing to inspect the empty spaces.

“Relax, I just tidied up a bit,” you try to keep your voice even and light. “They’re safe, Vader’s safe. I just thought we could paint the living room.”

He exhales in relief, painting he could deal with, painting he could work with. 

“...and redecorate,” you say under your breath.

The two of you ate dinner, Benny making loud noises of enjoyment from the guilt-wings you made, watching your post-work show together. These are the moments you loved, the simple comfort of each other’s presence, of having your best friend there at the end of every day.

Nothing romantic is ever explicit, and by s2 they're friends and that's it. there's no discussion or drama. they're good friends. literally shocked me. apparently a guy and girl who fit a bunch of romantic tropes... can just be friends

sam winchester and eileen leahy:

The last season set them up to be together, and then in Sam’s finale flash-forward, they replaced her with “blurry wife” literally a random blurred out woman rather than having him end up with Eileen Eileen is the coolest Supernatural character: she's deaf and also formerly dead (like Sam)

asuka tenjoin and yuki judai:

The ship name (fianceshipping) comes from the episode where Judai *accidentally* duels some guy to become Asuka's fiance (said guy never asks Asuka how she feels about this, ugghhh greater Duel Academia student body be normal about ladies challenge). Turns out that he *didn't know what a fiance was* and just wanted to have a good ol' time cardgaming. I think that this says more about this ship than anything else I could tell you. During the final season, Asuka almost confesses to him but cuts herself off & they then thank each other for giving each other some clarity of mind because they're both going through pretty rough times at that point in the plot. Looks concerningly like they're about to do a whole "ohh we need to make the main girl and boy romance out of obligation" bit and then they just don't do it. It's great. judai is the gayest guy of all time (subtext) and im like 80% sure asuka was experiencing comphet bc he's the only guy in their grade that treats her like a person. besties 4ever!!!!!!!! [straightmod has been informed that judai is also textually queer because he is canonically attracted to a non-binary character.]

kurosaki ichigo and kuchiki rukia:

Oh man, where do I even begin? So, for some context, Bleach starts when Rukia (a shinigami) gets critically injured saving Ichigo from a monster, and she transfers her powers to him so he can finish it off. Instead of transferring half her powers as planned, however, she transfers all of them, which forces Ichigo to take over her job as a shinigami. During this time period, Rukia... lives in his closet. Yeah. The entire first arc of the manga is dedicated to their relationship, and while a lot of it is playful banter, Rukia's presence in Ichigo's life fundamentally changes it for the better. Rukia then gets kidnapped by the rest of the shinigami who aren't at all happy she gave her powers to a human, and the main plot ensues from there. Throughout the story, Rukia and Ichigo constantly save each other when they're at their worst. When Rukia thinks she deserves to die, Ichigo is there to tell her she deserves to live. When Ichigo is in a funk about his superpowered evil side, Rukia is there to snap him out of it (something his canon love interest explicitly realises she was unable to do). They share a sun/moon motif for crying out loud, and yet like that last sentence said... they don't end up together, but with other people instead. Yeah. No shade to the canon ships, but Ichiruki is peak straightbaiting, honestly. They have a lot of banter/chemistry, fundamentally change eachother's lives for the better, save each other when they're at their lowest, and have a very deliberate sun/moon dichotomy... but they both end up paired off with different characters instead asdfghkl

izuku midoriya and ochako uraraka:

It’s the classic main character x friend who is a girl ship. They have no actual romantic interactions outside of their friendship. Ochako has “feelings” for Izuku, but they are clearly feelings of friendship until one of her friends insists that she must have a crush on Izuku, making her feel confused and embarrassed. Izuku clearly sees Ochako as a good friend, but when they first meet, he blushes and thinks “I can’t believe I just talked to a girl.” On the same day, he also blushes when he sees that a famous male hero is proctoring their exams. It’s literally so boring as a romantic ship. They have no chemistry as a couple.

Throughout the series, they have a deep friendship with each other which is consistently extremely important to the story's narrative. In order for them to be able to fight, they must get along and resonate with each other, and due to the mechanics of their world, fighting independently of each other is extremely difficult. In multiple instances, they are shown to be willing to put themselves in harm's way to extreme degrees to keep each other safe. They are even shown to live together. They are The Singular Straight Ship I have ever shipped and I love them. Also they are really cool and Soul can turn into an awesome scythe weapon that like only Maka can wield. And they fight really awesomely together.

luke skywalker and leia organa:

The idea of Luke and Leia was used in advertisements but they obviously decided not to do that. IT’S SO FUNNY. Like, I think this is the closest white straight people will ever get to ‘they were cousins’ing a couple. ok so my favorite sw movie is the force awakens because it caused me to have such a great idea for the rest of the series which never happened but shhhh it did

the main idea is that you can, by letting finnpoe exist, parallel a bunch of stuff to the original series but also more fun than that so we have:

- first off more time on reys home planet (i read the whole lil companion book about her chilling there) i'm not immune to Nausacaä coded characters

- poe has his tv canon backstory as a pilot instead of changing it to be racist

rey and finn things:

- finn and rey are like hinted at as oo are they gonna be together

- finn does actually get to say and fully use his force sensitive powers

- he and rey have like force-spidie sense on each other

- around the time when they are saving the hurt and angry sandworm thing is where finn's force sensitivity powers and shown and shows a lot of their force connection

- at a time after saving said sandworm thing finn and rey like either are egged on by someone or do think the other has a crush (possibly a weird singular kiss) and then! they both go um no thanks not romantic. but also- you're my force soulmate and my best friend. and then they're in a force-QPR thereafter

- after this poe is all like very quickly relieved and happy for them

rose things:

- listen listen rose and finn are thee ultimate "attempt at being straight before we both realize we are not" thing

I've seen a lot of people shit talk Reylo, although I've never seen Star Wars, I've been told a lot of those 'criticisms' aren't even true, and I'm honestly kinda tired of it

So, as someone who (I presume) ships/shipped Reylo, what would you say are the good things about the ship? What are the reasons you ship/shipped it?

Let's balance out all the negativity a bit (plus it's nice to hear you talk about the things you like and/or are passionate about ^^)

i very much ship it yeah, strong since 2014 lol. All the criticisms really boil down to 'it's het' and shipwars at the end dont they? like not even the 'he's a villain' and 'there's an age gap' and 'its incest' are like. solid arguments or anything when you can spot the same person saying it w an identical same gender ship

i personally tend to ship things because i overanalyze the characters and then how they balance each other out or how they would contribute to each other or rub off wrong or something. like i know people sometimes are more interested in the dynamic or in the shared story or something but im here with a shovel deep diving into character analysis and counterpoints in the other so let's go:

-the force is a power, overencompassing and all that, that can be controlled in two main ways: order (light) and emotion (dark). oversimplifying as you mentioned you arent familiar with the franchise and i am cursed with the knowledge of the extended legends verse so let's go with that. the thing with rey and kylo is that they use and are attuned to the force in direct opposite ways. he isnt just trained to use the light, he is very well attuned to order and to putting things in place. he has to actively struggle to use the dark side, we see him intentionally intensifying his own physical pain so he can use the dark better. while rey, completely untrained, is just *so* natural at the dark it's kind of scary. she struggles to learn order, it's not her nature. so you have two individuals struggling to get what the other just has naturally. and its so hot during a fight to see how they feed off of each other, use abilities that are not 'on their side', how even their lightsaber techniques reflect that - he /wants/ to be wild and messy but always ends up with perfect poise, she /tries/ to balance her hits but always ends up lashing in rage. they dance and hit each other in exactly the way to impress. yummy.

-they have a literal force bond. something that got scratched away from the lore once disney took over, but was very much prominent before that. and like at this point you know me and Soulmates, im a sucker. the second he reaches towards her with the force, its locked in. and more than that, theyre so connected and she's so strong with the force that she /overwhelms/ him. he is extremely well trained, and extremely powerful with the force - he's the heir of the chosen one afterall. /and yet/. She literally goes inside his brain and /learns/ how to fight and how to control the force from him, just snatches it from his supposedly overpowered mind. And he's /impressed/. He immediately goes 'join me'. The boy that wanted only revenge so far, only to be powerful, suddenly wants /an ally/. An of course, just like Vader, he never wanted to be a servant to the dark lord, just to escape his shitty situation. So when he sees his way out he calls to her. And she's too feral and scared and obsessed with /revenge/ (= very much a dark side thing! light = no emotion!) that she spits on him and /beats his ass/ with his own techniques. I love her sm.

-their entire upbringings mirror each other. she grew up poor and abandoned, had to fight for scraps of food. he grew up with one of the most powerful people in the republic - his mother leia - he was /supposed/ to be strong and powerful and a beacon. and yet they told him since he was young there's Vader in him, he's dangerous, he has to leave home and go train with Luke, who lost his own control and teachings and /tried to kill him/ over his own fear. they both needed to escape their pasts, one from chaos to order, the other from control to freedom. they kinda pass each other in the middle of their goals. And this scrappy feral girl, this No One from Nowhere matches step for step the Elegant Royal Noble Trained By a Hero and a Sith. Episode 9 mostly doesnt exist for me, but even if you see it as canon, as in Rey is the heir of the Big Bad from the last trilogy, it's /still/ a compelling story, and she doesnt really lose the fact that she grew up as No One. A dark side heir fighting for the light against a light side heir fighting for the dark is still good shit. And they /can/ balance it out. Again, franchise specific thing, but its pretty shown that extremities, both light and dark, arent really /good/. The light is too restrictive and too slippery. The Dark is too explosive, too prone to taking you over. Legends lore and part of current lore (Ahsoka namely), charts a third path - named Grey Jedi in legends. It's one where you dont forsake your humanity for the force, but you also dont let emotions fuel all your behaviour. I do think Rey and Kylo had the potential to show off to the wide public just how shitty Jedi were, and that the dark side isnt forever, isnt all evil, and the only way out isnt death.

-both their childhoods were stolen, but when they talk alone they act like kids again. there's a few scenes where they just. /talk/. like sure at first they throw insults like they arent trained deadly fighters, and then they calm down and speak softly and hold hands. stuck in an elevator together they give each other googly eyes, even when going into a fight. they cry and mourn and long. such a contrast to when they're dealing with anyone else, where theyre both contrary and argumentative and dismissive, or guarded and hesitant at best. they /get/ each other, even when they hurt each other.

-i mean i could tell you here how much they risk for each other. their lives, their positions, their whole support systems. kylo kills his master when he threatens to kill rey, rey escapes from luke on the mere idea that she could bring kylo back. the only reason they clash at the end of that is contradictionary ideologies - he still believes he can fix the world by himself, and she still clings to old stories. which is a very tasty clash of personalities, i /love/ it when external forces are the issue and not something between the characters themselves. /especially/ when those external forces are 'saving the world' vs 'saving yourself' yes yes yesss (this might be like all of my ships hahaa)

-ok down to the good stuff. /the size difference/. adam is a huge ass man and while im not a fan of daisy (would personally cast florence pugh there ngl) she and by extension rey are /tiny/ next to him, and yet just like. a powerhouse. something about a woman putting a man thrice her size on his ass ya know. and also getting railed by him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

-and like at the end of it all just. ya know. hero/villain ships, that are not rivalries. i fucking hate rivalries ngl. like nothing personal just not my taste. they did a really good job of portraying two people on opposing sides discovering they arent that different, and it's actually a common goal, system, force, that they're both fighting against. fighting each other and yet understanding at some level that its mostly pointless in the big scheme of things. finding solace on the battlefield, with the one opposite your weapon. fighting for your people against your people. its just good old stuff

the tl;dr of my brain on this ep is just. SO. DARTH VADER, HUH.

i say this every episode but god it is deeply compelling how miserable and pathetic obi-wan is i'm sorry. jaded and hopeless and stumbling over his own lies — this was the Negotiator, this was The General Kenobi, this was a hero to millions and now he can't do anything but tremble and run

leia who is clever and bright but still so very young... so perceptive but so naive... i am thinking of anakin (who isn't thinking of anakin here, really) and of how at age ten he had seen and felt too much cruelty to wear this kind of innocence

(i'm sorry but they really dont make darksiders like they used to none of the little inquisitorial squad have remotely any kind of intimidation factor and i cant tell if this is a function of clunky acting (unfortunate) or clunky costume design + effects. in a similar vein i do kind of feel like a lot of the minor chars/extras are breaking my suspension of disbelief? idk the bland american accents + overly modern dialogue + heavy-handed empire loyalist narrative aren't doing much for me)

you know me you know i love a good metaphor. using the force, obi-wan says, is like turning on a light when you're scared of the dark, the feeling of safety that comes with that. thinking about how hesitant he was to use it to save leia last episode. he hasn't felt safe in a decade he's just been sitting here scared of the dark and wallowing in it.

deeply horrific and really funny (a combination continued through this ep) that vader's lair of doom & gloom is on fucking mustafar. something awful about both him and obi-wan spending a decade reliving their worst moments over and over, something awful about neither of them wanting to be where they are, something awful about neither of them being able to die ("you should have killed me when you had the chance")

this is vader at his peak, though. my god. it is so good and right that they don't defang him for this he IS a monster he IS a nightmare made flesh and the sound of his breathing should & does kick your heart rate up a notch

this is so fucking excellent im exulting in it in an awful way OF COURSE HE CAME HIMSELF. OF COURSE HE'S SNAPPING RANDOM PEOPLE'S NECKS TO LURE HIM OUT THIS IS PERSONAL THIS IS THE MOST PERSONAL AND HE KNOWS OBI-WAN INSIDE OUT (of course obi-wan almost collapsed the minute he stepped planetside)

obi-wan is — i cannot emphasize this enough — extremely pathetic this is not mustafar 2.0 this isn't a fight he can win. vader at his peak vs obi-wan who hasn't touched his saber in a decade, whose hand shakes igniting it, who turns tail and runs because he's fucking terrified

obi-wan has spent ten years mourning his brother. vader has spent the same ten years planning, meticulously, how exactly hes going to tear him apart. this is well-thought-out and cold this is slow revenge and the only reason obi-wan isn't fucking dead is because anakin isn't kind enough to make it quick

HE SET HIM ON FIRE. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET OVER THE FACT THAT HE SET HIM. ON FIRE. ANAKIN SKYWALKER LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE GALAXY'S PETTIEST MOST DRAMATIC SON OF A BITCH . THIS IS SO FUCKED UP AND AWFUL AND ALSO REALLY FUCKING FUNNY TO ME I'M SORRY. HE SET HIM ON FIRE

i will say i am a little... [raised eyebrow emoji]... about how when tala set fires vader did nothing about it even though literally two minutes ago he put out his own fires with nothing but a wave of his hand. but i'm assuming, for now, that it's something like the thrill of the chase, that obi-wan has nowhere to run and knows he's being hunted, that anakin will get him again inevitably and it'll be worse. yum. delicious. i love star wars and have no feelings about it at all

final note i have been too vader-tunnel-vision to think too hard about the Path but quinlan vos my dearest i am glad to hear you're alive and theres something so . So. about him (& others! but especially him, who survived the purge) doing what jedi do, about him saving children. obi-wan you are not nearly as alone as you think.

I genuinely think this episode is a masterpiece. This show is the a fantastic mix of the original and prequel trilogies, and the darker, modern Star Wars TV shows we have come to love.

Some Star Wars recs

Being a SW fan from way too far back, I've read a lot of fic in my years in the fandom, but since the OWK series and perhaps earlier, authors are producing some extraordinary good things. Note, one of these recs is normal (ie gen) and some are slash because I'll read most things if they are good and fun.

GEN:

Obi-Wan is captured at the end of Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 3, and while Obi-Wan and Vader dial up the angst, Leia is not impressed with the monologuing Sith. Undoubtedly one of my very favorite SW fics. Its short, its sweet, its funny and I can HEAR the characters speaking. I still want to draw the image of Vader hands-on-hips glaring down at Leia hands-on-hips glaring up at him...

What it says it what it is: manipulative, insistent, greedy Anakin taking what he wants. Its darkly flavoured and the first real fic of this type I read since coming back to the pairing.

This story just presses all my YESPLEASE buttons. DarkObi-Wan setting out seduce Anakin and doing it with the deft "Negotiator" style, all charm and warmth and impossible-to-resist attraction. I'd kill (or at the very least seriously maim) for more of this pair's story.

Just about anything treescape puts a hand to is sublime, and this has to be my favorite lot. Its so subtly woven, as Obi-Wan fights to maintain his sense of self and balance the possessive, incandescent nova that is fallen Anakin. My teeth ache on just how good this is. But hell go read all her stuff (assuming you are a 'her', oh wonderful storyteller). Its the only work in progress I've included but Im pretty sure it will get finished. I may turn to the Dark Side if not... **o**

Character opinion bingo: Leia Skywalker and/or padme amidala

Leia:

Leia is a p cool character. A quick thinking diplomat who wasn't afraid to get in on the action. It is a shame that the majority of her training and use of the Force was shown in movie flashbacks. I get that they had to use cgi, but it's all the more reason to make more animated content for the rebellion era and afterwards, where we'd be able to see what she, luke, and han are up to without the need for those uncanny cgi masks.

Padme:

Padme is so pretty and so smart most of the time but im genuinely baffled by her behavior every time she's around anakin. It's like shes temporarily dumb but idk i guess that's supposed to be love or something? She gets into a lot of situations by being a "Detective" about stuff and snooping but she usually gets herself out of those situations too. I think she enjoys that and thinks of it as a fun adventure. I want her to let loose and go feral at least once because I KNOW she's tired of being the Adult(tm) and bigger person all the time. if she was sliiiiightly less of a diplomat and left unsupervised more often I guarantee the war would've been over way sooner.

alsofjfkfk im not gonna lie, anon, i saw it and went ‘oh cool i’ll answer that in a minute’ and the second i closed my inbox, my lack of object permanence kicked in and i forgot it existed. and then i repeated that process. many, many times.

but i will not allow it to happen again. we’re answering this now, damnit.

okay, see, the thing about me is i am an extremely basic star wars bitch. i have seen all of the movies. i have not read any books or comics. my friend in high school made me watch 1 episode of the mandalorian, and i went ‘haha cool! baby yoda!’ and then never watched more of it. (the fact that i don’t have disney+ contributed to this, but really, if i had tried, i’m sure i could have made do. i did not try.) i tried very very hard at one point to get into the clone wars show, and i remember only that there was some sort of small jabba the hutt and yoda telling some clones that their lives were meaningful in the force or something, so i have no idea how far i made it but probably not very. i have played exactly one game, jedi: fallen order, which my playstation tells me i 100%, but for the life of me, i can’t remember a single thing about it other than ‘robot buddy cute’ and ‘fun 👍’, which either is my incredibly small brain showing off its inability to store information or really doesn’t bode well for the quality of whatever story was in there lmao.

BUT. i love the movies. i’m a stupid sucker for the joy and hope of the original trilogy. i think the prequels are so fun and people are mean to them for no reason, like yes, they’re a mess, but you know how sometimes you look at a product and go ‘oh this is so corporate and soulless that nothing about it is worth seeing with my eyeballs?’ the prequels are not that. people cared about making these movies, and i can always be charmed when i can tell that there was love there, even if it didn’t work as perfectly as it wanted to.

which is probably why i’m so fond of the force awakens despite it all, because watching it feels like everyone there cared so so much about the new potential star wars. i remember watching behind-the-scenes when it first came out and seeing them talk about how they mixed practical and cgi effects for a bunch of the aliens, and i fell in love with finn because his character was basically catnip for me. my traumatized cat who was abducted and brainwashed and raised a soldier and still his heart was too big to be destroyed by the first order. poe was fun for the little screentime he had, and rey was aloof and fierce and hurt underneath it all, and kylo ren had so much fucking potential as the villain and foil for rey & finn that it actually causes me physical pain knowing what happened next. and han was there! until he died! i was heartbroken about it! it was a well-executed death! leia was there, and i could never shake the tragedy that this war she’d fought so hard to win in her youth had never really ended, that now she had to fight it alone again when luke left and han ran away. luke was not there, but this was pre-the last jedi, so i could actually be excited about what he might do when he showed up! the force awakens is a good movie.

the last jedi is a very pretty movie. the rise of skywalker feels like what everyone thinks the prequels are like. i do not watch those movies. i just mentally replace them with the utterly fantastic fic have you heard by peradi and pretend that we did get a stormtrooper rebellion <3 (if you haven’t read it, you should.)

what else, what else. i am incredibly boring when it comes to favorite characters in each trilogy, it’s just The Main Guy. i already talked about finn, but. anakin and luke. my little dudes. anakin has everything ever wrong with him, and i do not blame him for going of the rails. i mean, he did kill a lot of children and help install space facism but have we considered that the jedi were mean to him. and also that palpatine’s been grooming him since he was nine. and also that there is actual literal slavery happening in star wars and the response of everyone around him was to go ‘oh well anakin, guess u gotta let go of the fact that your mother will never be free. and if you can’t, that’s your fault.’ sorry. nope. feeling emotional about how one of the first things baby anakin asks qui-gon when they meet is if qui-gon is here to free them all, because that’s what jedi are supposed to do, they’re supposed to be heroes, and qui-gon tells him they aren’t. and then he does free anakin, and he’s got a fucking lazer sword and magic powers so who the hell would have been able to stop him from at least bringing shmi too, but instead he just takes anakin away. insane choices. george lucas im at your doorstep explain yourself.

and anyone who says they don’t love luke skywalker is a liar. u don’t like luke? luke who wants to see so much more of the universe than his little farm? luke who wants to believe in the force so strongly, his only connection to his father and soon, to obi-wan? luke who blows up the death star because he feels the force so strongly? luke who is such a shining star of hope and goodness and loyalty that han freaking solo turned around and came back to save his ass? and all that just in one movie. luke is so powerfully good, you know? and it had to be that way, the movies just wouldn’t work without him at the core of it. i love him so so much.

ships. well obviously im a c3po/r2d2 stan. as we all know, tragic love story for the ages. im a believer that r2d2 is unmemorywipeable, that trash can is too stubborn to let anything he stores be deleted, so really, we’re looking at the world’s shortest and rudest rebel spy and his overly polite amnesiac husband. im joking but im not.

taking it more seriously, i’m very easily convinced to see main character trios as poly ships. number 1 proponent of padme/anakin/obi-wan over here, a fate sealed by many good fics that i’ve read confirming this. if i may suggest one of my favorites, Queen’s Gambit by bedlamsbard, truly a fantastic star wars au work and it has an incredible podfic by reena_jenkins that inspired me to begin podficcing in the first place. following that, i also love han/leia/luke, in whatever configuration that comes, if it’s just han getting two skywalkers on his arms or if it’s luke and leia also following up on their kiss in empire strikes back. (‘i knew all along’ my ass, girl, either you didn’t or you did and you went straight for the lips alsjfjlssjkf.) From Orbit by gh0strobin is a favorite of mine for them, as well as a bed of daysided gold by lotesse.

and finally, most obviously, i was onboard with finn/poe/rey from day one of the force awakens. the reylos never got me. i was too busy thinking about the main trio kissing. (and i was a ‘rey & ben solo are cousins at least or somethjng’ truther back during force awakens, which for once, meant i had zero interest in shipping them and far more interest in using their possible backstories to explore this fascinating dynamic they had vis a vis the legacy and/or lack of one they inherited, what they were owed as children of legends. and well. i mean, i was kind of right by the end but by god i wish i wasn’t!!!) (and terrible news, i’m realizing that the majority of my post-force awakens reading on ao3 happened before i was bookmarking fics, so i don’t even have recs!!! >:( i need to rectify this immediately. but know that there are many fantastic fics for that trio and you should go looking for them.)

okay, one last round of fic reccing and i’ll leave it be, but there’s some great ones I’d be remiss not to mention. Double Agent Vader is a brilliant Vader character exploration series and it will hurt you and make u love him so so much. The Fires is a Mustafar groundhog day loop that Hurts (and fun fact, was the second fic i ever podficced for myself :( but the files are long gone. still have my first ever podfic though.) And The Force Breathes Once Again is a short and interesting fic about the force being Weird And Fucked Up. And Intertwine is a Padme Lives AU that’s just lovely. so many brilliant fics in this fandom, i swear.

OBI WAN KENOBI SERIES FINALE THOUGHT OMG SPOILERS AHEAD BUT OMG

OMG WHAT AN EPISODE

It is so so so good to see him again. Obi Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master, Guiding Light of the Galaxy

The confrontation between Vader and Obi Wan OMG, Obi starting in his traditional pose. Obi Wan in tears as he apologises to Anakin. I am not your failure Obi Wan. The way obi wan was holding back in the beginning, his fears and his grief holding him back until he realised who he was fighting for. Obi Wan then absolutely pummelling THEE Darth Vader so that he remains the Master and Anakin is still the padawan, the child who has much to learn. Also that duel was incredible, to see the Obi Wan who can take down Darth Maul in two moves, who smiles before he lets Vader kill him on the death star. I mean this is how you do character growth. You show us the beginning, you show us exactly why there's a change and you show us that change in all its glory. Also im seeing small parallels to the Ahsoka/Vader duel in Rebels and just like in Rebels, seeing Anakin's face, hearing his voice was absolutely devastating. Obi Wan calling him Darth and walking off, leaving Anakin right where Obi Wan left him last time.

Reva going after Luke in retribution. Owen and Beru, protecting him with their lives, it really puts their death in ANH in perspective, they weren't just Clueless farmers who were unlucky, they were protecting their child with their lives. Reva unable to kill Luke because she knows deep down that her jedi siblings do not want revenge. Obi Wan helping her realise that she is free and that she is not fallen beyond redemption, another main star wars theme. The Jedi Younglings received their honour, their deaths were acknowledged.

Anakin Skywalker continues to pick the dark side and we get the imperial march as he does. He actually acknowledged his agency in his fall which is something even the fandom doesn't sometimes, finding literally anyone to blame including Obi Wan but Vader spelled it out very clearly and that finally set Obi Wan free.

Leia, at only 10 starts to become the leader and rebel that she grows up to be. She is everything obi wan told her she was, that part where tries to reassure her that her birth parents were excellent people made me tear up so much but I love that Leia realises that it doesn't matter anyway because she has loving parents who are also excellent. As much as I sometimes wish Anakin hadn't messed up so much and he and padme had had a better relationship and they lived happily ever after with their kids, it's hard to really want that when Luke and Leia both had loving, caring, healthy families that made them the people they needed to be.

Obi-Wan meeting Luke and we get a Hello there!! Obi-Wan, finally allowing himself not to live as a shell of a person, packing up and moving out and building relationships and being a Jedi again. Obi Wan SMILING MULTIPLE TIMES THIS EPISODE.

QUI GON JINN FORCE GHOST

Just Obi Wan the Jedi Master finally becoming who he needs to be so that in 9 years when he gets that message from a young princess he once knew, he can help her save the galaxy and start his old padawan on the path to redemption

I loved this show so much. All the people (not so much on here) complaining and saying it was filler or it didn't make sense obviously didn't watch the same show. Of course its filler, that's the whole point of the show but the character work is the plot of this show and it did excellent character work.
