there were other ways calypso and leo’s relationship couldve been written, in this essay i will

this isnt a hot take at all but caleo just has. so many problems. im not gonna list em but anyone who’s read hoo and toa knows

so how could it have been written better? here are my (a non writer who has shit articulation) opinions, please be nice

1. They date, then break up

this feels like a likely thing to happen bcs as we know, leo is notoriously flirty and seeking relationships and calypso falls in love REAL easily. so ofc, being stuck on an island together with no other company for like weeks on end would lead to a relationship of some kind. though i think that relationship would most likely be. unhealthy.

so yeah, theyd get together, but itd probably start showing problems very quickly as we see in TOA. but from there, i think they shouldve broken up. maybe it could be caused by an outside intervention from someone who. maybe has better experience with healthy relationships. jiper being an example, since they broke up after piper realized their relationship was basically started with lies.

once they broke up, leo could learn that romance isnt a cure all (cough rick cough) and that he doesnt need a partner to ‘fit in’. the whole seventh wheel thing was a big part of his characterization so i think unlearning that whole mess would be a good thing for him, esp since TOA had a lot of ‘growing and developing and changing’ as a theme. he could learn to define and support himself outside of his relationship with women (mommy issuesss)

calypso could also learn to support herself and have relationships with people that arent unrequited crushes, what with how her only human interaction was with random men who couldnt stay.

2. They stay as friends

Basically same character benefits as the last one, just different methods.

Leo realizes he doesnt like calypso in that way on the island during that time itself, maybe due to self reflection or something. maybe they have an intervention/impromptu therapy session or something and figure themselves out. not like they have much else to do on the island

this way, we get to see him figure out (is that the right word?) that being friends w/ women isnt automatically a gateway to romance. that its not so simple. that he can have close friends without having to date anyone (+ possible aro rep here but thats just me projecting) then from there, he can develop this further and come to terms that he doesnt need a romantic relationship to be loved etc etc

3. They stay together, but it’s established as. not good

now for this one i think its less likely since this entire thing is still sorta a kids book series and authors dont usually include these types of topics without it being resolved, but it is something to think about

caleo’s relationship in TOA felt pretty icky at least to me, so i imagine it isnt setting the best example for kids if its portrayed as normal/a good thing

in this method, their relationship could stay but just be more established as not normal and unhealthy bcs. it kinda is

I had an interesting thought earlier

So everyone knows that Rise Leo has similarities/traits shared with 12 Leo and 03

Y'know, being beaten up by a big scary villain and being yeeted through a window (or through a portal to a prison dimension)

But I don't think anyone has ever noticed the similarities between Rise Leo and the other versions of Mikey (excluding 87 and Bayverse Mikey) or maybe someone has and I haven't seen it yet

So I have made a list of all the similarities I noticed

Thinking about 2012!Leo and Rise!Leo, and how if you look at them in the first episodes of their respective season 1 they actually are so much the same character at the base just with different upbringing, but what ends up making them different at the end of their series is actually a result of a thing they have in common:

That is, their tendency to emulate and play a role (which I've loved every post where I've seen people talk about this). Except their different upbringings meant they had very different role models (their tv show of choice and their dads) (especially their dads) and so the archetypes they developed themselves into changed.

2012!Leo was growing into, ehhh, I guess you could call it a Noble Warrior archetype? Whereas rise!Leo was going more, like, Trickster Hero. Which I think means that even if rise!Leo was able to reach the very end of his arc they would have functioned very differently as leaders, but in ways that were still very true to their characters!

(Admittedly everything has to be speculation and extrapolation on where characters were going in Rise, but...)

And I know I'm probably just rehashing ground others have already tread but I can't stop thinking about how that would play out. And also how in a crossover I kinda think even at their best the two Leos would maybe drive each other a bit crazy at first until they understood each other.

Like yes, yeah, 2012!Leo helping the newer/younger iteration work through his issues and insecurities to reach his full potential is GREAT, I always love reading it, but ALSO sometimes I want to see two developed leaders with different specialties (personal battle skills and commanding a flat-out fight vs ...idk how to put this, creative strategies and tactics? pseudo-diplomatic nonsense? ...defeating an enemy vs accomplishing a goal? the difference is this thing I can feel but am having trouble putting into words). I just think it would be interesting to see their different approaches to problem solving bounce off each other, whether they were working together or in a VS. situation.

huh. I liked the prequel's backdoor pilot A LOT more this time around.

back when season 7 was airing I couldn't help but be annoyed about this pause in the plot (in a season that as I've said, would've worked better as two seasons) for characters I cared little about, and for how quickly they got rid of becca, the one character I knew and who held my interests in a prospective prequel.

but neither of those things bother me now -it is what it is- and I can appreciate it for what it is. I like callie as a choice for heroine; she is definitely an amalgam of jroth's beloved female characters (especially octavia), but also feels as her own thing, and I think iola evans had the charisma to carry a series. and I definitely feel validated by the fact that jroth decided to focus on an antagonistic sister-brother relationship between her and reese (I am sooooo right about him wanting to go back and do a blake siblings show).

I'm not crying over spilt milk, but given that in the end I embrace the 100 warts and all... yeah, I would've watched it and likely enjoyed it lol especially given how far the cw has fallen since woe is me. it left the plot at an interesting point as set-up; if I ever meet jroth, I kinda want to pick his brain about what his plans for the show were ngl.

slight spoilers:

obviously what splinter was really getting at is that the poison already wore off, and this is just a more psychosomatic issue due to leo's guilt from thinking he killed an innocent man, but like. these issues are riddled with daddy issues and it isn't subtle. i already talked about it in my little think piece here, but you can realistically say that none of this would have happened if splinter hadn't trained them. or if he hadn't been so set on getting revenge.
