My Friends are Raising money for Special Effect!

Hi! Do you like video games? Do you think it fucking sucks that people with physical disabilities can't experience the same highs and lows you've had in your games, just because they can't hold a controller or work with a mouse and keyboard?

Wanna try and help us change that?

Then good news! The charity Special Effect makes controllers for disabled gamers, and this month, from the 23rd to the 25th February, is GameBlast, where streamers from all around the world come together to raise money in support.

Four of those streamers are my very good friends WeirdFTW, LauraPetal, Scarfulhu and Ebak the Cat, who form the WeirdBlasters, aiming to raise £3,000 for the charity!

If you have the spare cash, they'd be really grateful for your donations, and one of the possible streaming rewards is me playing both Golden Sun games to near completion. No cash? Last Monday of the Week 2023-08-14

Accidentally did the Pride Parade.

Listening: I finally finished the Haitian Revolution in Revolutions. I have to actually pay some attention to Revolutions so I can't just put it on idly at work, so it goes slow. The Haitian Revolution is absolutely buckwild, there's so many different actors at play and it doesn't help that simultaneously to all of this is the French revolution, with a several week to month delay in communications between Haiti and France.

Reading: A load of 3D printing docs, the Kobra Neo that I just got is only kind of half-assedly supported by the slicers. You can use the older Kobra profiles but you'd have to forgo some important features, so I'm now learning about how to write profiles for Prusa Slicer. There are some community profiles but for something like this I like to know what the hell I'm doing so that I can debug problems.

Watching: Nothing.

Playing: At the behest of noted tuesdayposter @girlfriendsofthegalaxy I played through Abzu, the astoundingly gorgeous underwater game.

It's a very beautiful game, very Journey (same composer) and it controls well (like Journey) and that's what to go there for. It reminds me a little of Terra Nil, which was on the Mondaypost a few weeks back, as "a game with ecological trappings but little actual concern for ecology." I don't dislike that genre but I do dislike when people try to claim that things like this are ecologically minded, which I've seen in some coverage of both Terra Nil and Abzu when I look them up.

Terra Nil is often called an "Anti-Citybuilder" but that's pure set dressing, it's a city builder with one major caveat, which is that you also have to clean up the infrastructure behind you, but it's still a citybuilder at heart. An anti-citybuilder would be, I guess, about disrupting an existing complex interlinked system as efficiently as possible, causing it to collapse. Or something like that.

Anyways I did like Abzu, I got actively loudly excited when I found that you could ride on a sunfish and even more excited when it let me ride a giant squid.

Making: The 3D printer is here and I am setting it up. Printed the test-owl that came with the system but I'm still working on getting the slicer set up satisfactorily so that I can print some handy parts for around the house. Stated CAD'ing up some parts, though, which is making me get back into FreeCAD. FreeCAD is good but it is decidedly Open Sourcey.

Also out doing photography during Prague Pride, which was this weekend. I wandered into the middle of the parade while out in town and figured "hey, I have little else to do today" and then ran into a friend and hung out. Good day. Those photos will be along as soon as I get to them.

Tools and Equipment: A secret they don't tell you about extremely heavily patterned shirts is that it's much, much harder to tell if you forgot to iron it and just went out in an unironed shirt. There are many reasons why I wear extremely loud ridiculous shirts and this is one of them.

Its so nice to see somone active in the endless moon fandom even after all these years, i loved playing them as a kid! do you happen to know of any modern games that have a similar vibe to it?

I'm glad to hear that! A lot of people who played these games seem to have very fond childhood memories of it. :> As for games with a similar vibe, there's none that I can think of that really fill the exact same niche, but if you like diving games I really recommend ABZU! It's a bit less grounded in our reality than EO, which may be a turn-off for some people... but it's one of my all-time favs: the music is incredible, the visuals are gorgeous (in a different way to EO, it's a lot more stylized), and as long as you're playing with a controller, movement feels slick and satisfying! It's one of the only games I can think of that lets "sit back and watch the movement of the sea" like EO does, and in both games, the developers' love of the sea is quite palpable. There's one scene that still has me misty-eyed with sublimity every time... It even uses a concept that was scrapped from the EO series: that of an ancient sea filled with prehistoric creatures! I'm rambling a little... but I really can't recommend it enough. :D

I've been thinking about playing Abzu because it looks like it could be a cozy exploration game and it's honestly really pretty.

However, I have a pretty big phobia of the ocean (mostly the deep ocean) and I'm wondering if the game has any scary parts or big spooks or anything like that. Can anyone let me know?

January 28th is my birthday, dubbed Meimiday several years ago by my friends (I think it was hojo who started it). For those years, I would spend all day watching streams from said friends playing games for my birthday entertainment. Eleven years ago, however, when asked what I’d like to see I kinda just went “Why don’t you just beat some games?” and so the festivities truly began. I'm so excited to stream SotC... I was thinking about other games I might stream in the future, too. Was considering stuff like Abzu, Zoo Tycoon, System Shock, Stellaris and of course Dead Space (not even for the petty reasons, but also because it's genuinely my favorite game)

I have like ten, but the most prominent one is spiders. I read a book about poisonous spiders when I was younger, and one of the facts stated that Black Widows will make a home in your toilet and being careful in the middle of the night. There actually was a spider in a toilet I was using one time a few years ago, and that just added to the fucking fear factor.

Favorite game?

I like those simple adventure games, like Abzu and the Pathless. The one that I currently play, and I’m still on is Sky: Children of the Light. It’s on the app store. You can download it on your phone. (And if anyone wants to be friends there, let me know)

Sexuality?

I feel no real need for a romantic relationship, but I’ve never made the effort to pursue one. However, I wouldn’t mind having a romantic relationship without the sex. I have no idea if I’m asexual, demi-sexual, or aromatic. So...I guess I’m still questioning.

Drawing. Art classes were always something I looked forward to in high school.

I am impressed at how much I ended up disliking this game.

Tedious. Dear God, was it tedious. The levels are stupidly big, have very few distinguishing landmarks to figure out where you are/have been, are unnecessarily complex (and there is no map, so have fun with that), and you're gonna have to explore them pretty thoroughly if you want to find all of the murals and spirits and shamans that you have to awaken (all of which are required to platinum the game).

There are jumps you have to complete to move to different areas, and sometimes if you screw up the amount of time it takes to correct it is ridiculous. Even once you get the Spirit Dash ability the fox does not move fast enough to make the travel in this game less obnoxiously tedious.

Making this worse was the janky controls. Sometimes you try to jump and just somehow get caught in the ground, botching your attempt. Sometimes the fox just doesn't jump when approaching a ledge. Don't even get me started on the parts where you have to do very specific maneuvers through wind tunnels or water spouts.

This game was released in 2019, and yet there is STILL a borderline game-breaking bug at the end of chapter five: You have to destroy a plague tether, but the game will not let you use the Spirit Howl to do it. You stand next to it, it prompts you to press the button, but it just doesn't work. I should mention to that you have to do this in Spirit Form, which only lasts a few seconds.

So you attempt this about fifty times, go on YouTube, and eventually find out that the solution is to close out the game and come back- which will then load you into the environment as if you'd destroyed the plague tether, allowing you to progress.

Again: I am playing this in 2023, nearly four years after Spirit of the North was released- fully updated, fully patched. And they have not fixed this bug.

It's also worth mentioning that there appears to be some sort of glitch related to this one, where sometimes the game does not count this towards the ultimate "clear all the plague tethers" trophy.

The controller, by the way, did not stop vibrating after I got the fox's spirit powers. (i.e. chapter 2). And there is no way to toggle it off in-game. I mean, long, continuous vibrations as long as the game was running.

There is no meaningful story here. Once upon a time, there were humans. And then they all died because plague. Now fox spirit must restore life to the world.

Sounds similar to Okami, right? There's even a skin you can unlock in-game that looks like Ammy's. Except that it lacks its charm, and... Just about everything else that made Okami special: The characterization, the unique artwork, the world full of lore... It just doesn't hold a candle to it.

The only slight emotion I felt was watching the fox limp through the cave early on in the game after being injured. And even then, that sadness was quickly overrun by irritation because of just how LONG they drag out the slow, limping walk through that level. Any positive emotion that this game might provoke gets overridden either by boredom or aggravation at the controls.

It's boring, frustrating, and again- tedious. I've played plenty of "walking simulator" games, like Abzu, Beyond Blue, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, What Remains of Edith Finch, etc. Abzu was a good example of what this game could have been, if they'd tightened up the map and diversified the environments a bit more.

The fox is cute, the environments are kinda pretty (they get old fast, though), and the music is nice. Those are the only compliments I have for this game.

Rime

I was looking for something similar and Rime came up as a suggestion. And I am so glad it did. I loved it. The art was simple but beautiful and the lighting was gorgeous and the music was a joy to listen to. I found it very calming to play a lot like Sub Nautica, Journey and Abzu I'm not a very skilful gamer, so I like games that I don't die all the time in, or ones that have an easy skill level. I play for relaxation and I love games that look beautiful and with some puzzles for a bit of a challenge. For me Rime ticked those boxes. there was a surprise ending. I am replaying it though because it lets you go back and find the collectables you missed and you can choose what chapter to do this, you don't have to restart from the beginning.

i finished ffvii remake in hard mode!

holy shit though. in the final battle i would switch to another character and blink and then sephiroth would appear behind me like some kind of horror movie monster. weeping angel. and he just keeps attacking. also i still hate whisper harbinger fight. too long. too many cutscenes. 

(edit: the picture for the ‘finish the game in hard mode’ achievement is sephiroth. did that affect my decision to play the game in hard mode? yes.)

You know what I want? A game like Journey or The Pathless where, instead of just some simplistic “restore the balance” plot, you get to play as an archeologist sort investigating the ruins and finding all these fun little facts about the society while restoring the balance and stuff.
