❓ #QOTD What classic story would you love to read a queer retelling of? ❓ 🦇 Gwendoline and Arthur have been betrothed to one another since birth. Too bad they absolutely hate each other. When forced to spend a summer in Camelot together, Gwen and Arthur discover tantalizing secrets about one another: Gwen witnesses Arthur kissing a boy, while Arthur learns that Gwen has a crush on the kingdom's lone lady knight, Lady Bridget Leclair. Stuck at a stalemate, they make a reluctant pact to cover for one another. While Gwen and Bridget finally connect, Arthur finds himself enamored by Gwen's brother. Can they navigate their messy feelings to find their own places in history?

💜 Oh my goddess, the queer chaos in this is everything. Lex Croucher has spun Arthurian legends of old into a queer medieval YA rom-com that could easily alter history as we know it. Gwen is a bi baby, newly navigating her feelings for a badass lady knight, while Arthur is a gay, sassy messy shooting heart-eyes at Gwen's brother (the one-day king). The dialogue is EVERYTHING; sassy, quick-witted, and all too entertaining. There's somewhat sexy sword-fighting (come on, sword-fighting is always sexy, but when your queer crush is schooling you, it's all the better), fake dating (does it count as fake dating when you've been betrothed since childhood?), and heart-warming found family vibes. The queer panic and nervous humor were all too relatable, even though the story is set in medieval times. That's a true feat; you can connect with the queer chaos, even if you're shooting heart-eyes in the 21st century.

💜 That being said, let's talk about Gwen and her lady knight. I mean, get ready to absolutely SWOON alongside Gwen. Lady Bridget Lechlair is all fierce confidence (a necessity, when everyone has an unpopular opinion of you simply because you're a woman, regardless of your badass abilities), but she's also an enigma with a gooey interior. I loved seeing Gwen find her confidence through Bridget, discovering her voice and standing up for them both when necessary. Though Gwen is a royal, she's questioned her inner power and authority, as everyone around her has made it clear her only worth is in her marriage to Arthur as a political move. Spending time with Bridget gives Gwen the change to realize she's worth so much more. Though the story's quick wit and banter stands out, I think this character development is the story's real strength. Sometimes, you need someone who believes in your potential before you can see it yourself.

🦇 The only real hang-up for me was the pacing. The ending felt especially rushed, which was a disappointment after the queer chaos dragged a bit. I wonder if the writer paused for a moment, then returned to finish the latter half of the story. I also found the relationship between Arthur and Gabriel (Gwen's brother) a little underwhelming when it had so much potential at the start. Regardless, I appreciated all the queer hijinks and humor.

🦇 Recommended for fans of Heartstopper, Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow trilogy, Red, White, & Royal Blue, and the TV show Merlin. Get ready for a swoon-worthy, medieval mess of pining and romance!

I cant stand up for Alex Day ANYMORE

I’ll start off by saying I know this is very late to drama that unfolded a long time ago, but I think it’s important to still talk about since Alex is still on youtube and still has many viewers. This is not an apology or an “I was wrong” post, it’s simply admitting defeat on something I had no reason to stand up for in the first place.

I was a Nerimon fan back in the day, but like many others, I saw his arrogance and I saw that he wasn’t the best friend/boyfriend. A few times spring to mind like when he talked about moving out of the house he shared with Charlie, I remember him saying he’d found “the dream flat” and he said something like “I had to tell Charlie I wanted out of the house, it wasn’t my fault I found my dream flat when we had a mortgage” and I remember being rather pissed off with him. He shunned the responsibility of entering a contractual obligation and he ignored his duty as a friend to make sure it’s what Charlie wanted too, but the way he described it was that he told Charlie he was leaving and their agreed arrangement was over and it wasn’t Alex’s fault.

Then of course I think most of us felt angry when he finally revealed the girl he’d been in a relationship with was Carrie. Most Nerimon fans were also Carrie fans too because generally one was found through the other. And we pretty much all knew they were together. Then he admitted they’d been together, he broke up with her because she was holding him back and distracting him, then when his friends all told him he was a crappy person with women, he claimed he realised how terrible he had been and fought to get her back. They got back together, he bragged about how romantic he had been and he said he was the one who made Carrie keep it a secret.

So obviously when everything came out about Alex, I dare say that many of his fans could say genuinely say they were honestly shocked. I’m not saying we all thought he was manipulative and a cheat, but I don’t think it took people too long to accept it. But people stood up for him because what came out about him didn’t seem to be anything too life-changing. He cheated on Carrie and we were all angry at him, he pressured girls into doing things, but there were so many of his supporters saying this wasn’t too bad that at the time it was easy to stand up for him. We all try to look past the bad things our idols do, we stand up for people we have a connection to, that’s what many of us did with Alex.

I realised a long time ago that I was wrong to hope he came back and I was wrong for watching his videos when he did return to youtube. I got older and realised that manipulative behavior is so much more damaging than I ever thought back then and pressuring someone into doing something you know they don’t want to do is just outright disgusting.

But I thought Alex had grown, he’d started becoming more self-aware and admitted to being a bad person and wanting to change things. I wasn’t a fan anymore but I would watch his videos when I saw them in my youtube recommended. Not so long ago he tried to blame the friends in his life who fell out with him when it came out the things he’d done, saying they were psychologically torturing him by cutting him off. I felt angry he’d done that.

But the main thing that made me feel personally angry that Alex Day was a recent video he made about how he got a boat. He said he was moving in with his girlfriend when he decided to buy a boat without consulting her. He simply bought one, called her up and said “Sorry if you don’t wanna live on a boat because that’s my plan now”

This is extremely angering to me because all the times he’s promised he’s changed and asked his supporters to forgive him have continued to be broken. All those years ago when he claimed he was sorry he had broken up with Carrie because he didn’t want to compromise his future for her, and he’s still doing it and bragging about it. He had arranged to move in with his girlfriend and impulsively bought a boat without asking her if she would be ok with the possibility of living on it, he shunned his duty as a partner in that relationship to consider how she would feel if she didn’t want to live on a boat, it’s what he wanted and she either had to go along with it or get herself out of his plan.

So, this is directly to Alex Day, should he ever read this post.

I bought your music and I bought your book, I watched your videos without fail when you used to post them, I did all I could to try and get my friends to buy Forever Yours, I continued to watch you when other viewers dropped out because you did indeed become increasingly arrogant. I put my support into you when you admitted to doing terrible things, I stood up for you and argued for you when things came out about you because I honestly believed you’d changed when you’d said you had. And now this. You don’t have to conform to what people expect of you, but I’ve seen you like comments on youtube from people bringing up that they’ve supported you since the Nerimon days and you did have a duty to those people to stop lying.

We paid our money to support your music career and gave you our time on videos. Many of us were attacked for continuing to support you but we stood firm that we wanted to keep it up. There aren’t many supporters left for you, but I’m sad to say I hoped you would be able to get a career on youtube back, that you’d become a musician again, that I could support your future again. I cannot do that when you are still bragging about the things you claimed you’d changed years ago.

I will no longer be watching your videos or standing up for you, and I doubt any future apologies or claims to change will mean much to your fans because even before you boat video, I didn’t believe you were a good person. But bragging on camera that you’re still selfish with your girlfriend despite you saying years ago you had learned is damaging and it’s a mockery to those of us who were insulted constantly for supporting you.

To Anyone else who might read this, I ask you reach out to those you might dislike because they support someone you think is terrible, and you talk to them. I was younger at the time of the Alex Day stuff coming out and I was naive, getting older and being in my own relationship made me see that manipulation and pressuring behavior is much more serious than I thought at the time. Alex did manage to promise his audience a lot of change to come and many of us fell for it. Rather than holding it against those who still might be his fans, perhaps we could try and have a conversation with them instead. 

I would like to offer a personal apology to Lex. Obviously I was only ever a viewer and I don’t know her, but I dismissed her fans at the time who said he would not change and his apologies meant nothing. You might never see this but I sincerely say I’m sorry for what happened to you and the part I played in the negativity caused by Alex Day fans ignoring what he did because we believed he would change.

Six weeks after reading it, I’m still obsessed with Docile. I’m 22k words into writing a fic for it. Here’s a small taste:

“It’s a deal.” I almost thought he was going to call it a date, but I’m just as glad he didn’t. Setting fire to the physical embodiment of the worst things in our past is important, but it’s not much of a date.

most popular one-shot: My first in the fandom! Agatha Returns! I love myself a good Agatha finding out fic 👏. It’s also my shortest at 657 words.

most popular multi-chapter: it’s Raising a Demon 😈 that I wrote with @scone-lover. What was meant to be a cracky fake-magickal-baby one-shot for our lord and saviour @krisrix‘s birthday turned into a sprawling 30k of chaos crack with all the feelings and thirst. 😂 No regrets. 😂 We legit never expected it to get as much interaction as it did, and we’re so grateful 🥰! It was the most fun I’ve had whilst writing, and the most inspired I’ve ever been; I read back over it sometimes like... wow, was that me?

fic you were nervous to post: I’m always vibrating with nerves. But I was TERRIFIED to post Serves You Right, because at that point I knew a lot of people and it felt so much more vulnerable. The mortifying ordeal of being known and all that. Sconey and @twokisses were exceptional cheerleaders and I cannot thank them enough.

Also Omertà was similar levels of nerves. It’s from Vera’s POV and I effectively had to develop a whole new character from two lines, which I’d never done before. I’m so so happy that people think I managed to pull it off 🥺🥰.

how do you choose your titles: I suckkk at titles. You can usually catch me bugging Sconey or @xivz in DMs with 15 different options 😂

do you outline: hmmm, I’m gonna go with no. I do in a sense of, I’ll write down bullet points of the idea in my head, and I’ll rearrange them into a “structure” but that’s it. Almost all of my ideas start out as dialogue (usually Baz’s snark 😂) and then I end up filling in around it and that helps flesh the idea into something solid.

For my NaNoWriMo however I did outline because I’d been letting the idea simmer away since July. Full spreadsheet and everything... I haven’t continued that forward haha 👀

complete: 10 fics on AO3; 8 for CO (after I upload todays!), 1 for Six of Crows and 1 for Warcross.

I have two more that are complete for CO in my Googledrive... just need to get the courage to post.

do you take prompts: I never have, but after doing the COC, I’d like to try!

in progress: okay I have at least 15 lmao. For the sake of like, not droning on, ones I’m actively working on right now: Secret Santa, my NaNoWriMo which I think I’m going to do for Big Bang, a Valentines day exchange and a songfic which sprawled out of control and I’m VERY excited for!

I’m going to start posting this fic on Friday (I’m both super excited and also crazy nervous that no one will like it haha.)

It’s too close. The clock must be lying, be broken, be confused by what we are trying to do here. 

(Doesn’t it know I have a lifetime’s worth of kisses to give?)

I reach over and pull him close, letting the last minute together fall into a sea of kisses; as if this is reality and the other world is something neither of us needs to speak about.

He kisses me back with everything he has, repeating my unspoken words back. 

Everything goes dark. I can hear a faint beeping in the background.

I need Simon Snow to realize I’m the one he needs to ask.

The best way to do that is with a list.

I spring up from the bed and march across the room to the whiteboard I use for my football schedule and looming assignments. There’s nothing worthwhile on it at the moment so I wipe the surface clean and stand in front of the blank board for a moment as I gather my thoughts.

First, I highly recommend:

The Five Years ‘Verse by @pipsqueakparker

This trio of stories includes the infamous Grinch Onesie, and yet what could have been total crack evolves (through copious, highly enjoyable smut, which Pip is so freaking good at!) into a story of sweet, tender love that gives me a happy glow for hours after reading.

And then, speaking of highly enjoyable smut, I can’t NOT mention 

Fuck the Wavering Wood, by @captain-aralias.  So many people have mentioned this fic this week, for good reason.  Incredibly hot, exciting, fun...I can’t praise it highly enough.  I’ll be rereading this one for years, I’m certain.

And then I reread an old favorite this week, 

Sugar, We’re Going Down, by @angelsfalling16.  This is an angsty, but sexy take on the idea that, what if Simon and Baz never got together at Watford, but met and acknowledged their attraction years later?  Simon can’t figure out if Baz wants more than meaningless sex from him, and it’s heartbreaking, but ends hopefully.  I love this fic.

I’ll end with a fun, non-smutty AU that I’ve enjoyed rereading this week:  

Make a Wish by @xivz: Takes place in a world where Baz is a ballet dancer who has lost his dream because of a car accident, and he accidentally saves the life of Simon Snow, who is revealed to be a Jinn who can grant him a single wish.  This story does not give into the easy and obvious ending, and I love it all the more for that.

I’m working on a Shep-meets-Blue fic for COC. Here’s the first paragraph:

I wanted to see if I could find any maybes at Lake Mead. There are legends of water creatures all over the world, from nixies in Germany to Jenny Greenteeth in the UK to kappas in Japan and the River Mumma in Jamaica. And then there are your less humanoid water monsters like Nessie or Champ. You never know what you might find, is what I'm saying. And Lake Mead has its own legends, from mutated alligators to catfish big enough to swallow a kayak whole. I doubt that giant catfish are great conversationalists, but you never know, and it would be a sight to see, anyhow, and something to report on the cryptid bulletin boards.

Bored Panda reached out to Andy McCray, the founder and editor at the website Harry Potter Fan Zone, to find out what it is about the Harry Potter series that clicks with so many people still today. The project was launched back in 2003 when Andy was a 14-year-old student from Canberra, Australia. It is now one of the largest Wizarding World sources on the internet.

Andy explained that Harry Potter has such a passionate and enthusiastic following because it embedded itself in the zeitgeist of the 2000s. “An entire generation grew up reading the books and watching the films, and the characters and stories have transcended the page to became part of popular culture.

”Moreover, there’s this entertainment and nostalgia factor to it. “The HP movies deal with themes — love and hate, good versus evil, overcoming adversity and standing up against injustice, finding inner strength — which are particularly relevant in the modern world,” Andy said.

For the millennial generation who grew up reading books, the Harry Potter world serves as a form of fantasy escapism in this increasingly hectic world.

Andy finds it absolutely natural that people would continue to make Harry Potter references online. “It’s loved by such a huge number of people that the characters, situations, jokes and references are immediately understood by a wide audience.”

Having said that, memes are also a vital part of 21st century popular culture. And “what better than pairing that with one of the biggest popular culture phenomenons of our time,” concluded Andy.
