Famous Jewish royalty and nobility as Disney Princesses:
Tumblr media
Growing up, I loved Disney Princesses, but I never saw any representation of Jewish princesses. Which was a shame, because I grew up with stories of strong Jewish women, I just never got to see their stories in mainstream media. I have two younger sisters, and I wish they could grow up seeing just one Disney Princess from our culture and heritage. So, being an artist, I decided to take the five classic white princesses, and redesign them to be five strong Jewish royalty and nobility. I decided to represent a large swath of time periods and locations, just like Disney Princess stories cover different time periods and locations, and to celebrate the diversity of Jewish history. So, let's go!
Tumblr media
Queen Esther
For Cinderella, I chose to depict Queen Esther, because they both share themes of concealing one's identity. Esther is the heroine of Megillat Esther, a book in the Tanakh. She was forced to become the wife of the Persian king Achashverosh, but because of it she was able to save the Jewish people from genocide at the hands of Haman. Queen Esther might be a "typical" choice, but I think that not many people truly appreciate her and her story, despite how well-known it is.
Tumblr media
Qasmuna
For Belle, I chose the poet Qasmuna, because Belle is a studious woman, and Qasmuna was a scholar and a poet. Qasmuna was an Arabic-language Andalusian poet during the middle ages. Not much is known about her, but she is one of the very few recorded Jewish Arabic-language poets of her time. Some sources attribute her to having been the vizier Shmuel HaNagid (Samuel Ibn Nagrillah)'s daughter, making her the closest to royalty as was possible for a Dhimmi at the time. I depicted her wearing lavish clothing, but also wearing a yellow shawl and a gold calf necklace to signify her Dhimmitude.
Tumblr media
Licoricia of Winchester
For Aurora, I chose to depict Licoricia of Winchester since Disney's Sleeping Beauty takes place in England. Licoricia was a 13th century English businesswoman and community leader. She funded and lent money to prominent gentile figures at the time, including King Henry III. She is considered one of the most influencial Jewish women in her time. She was murdured, possibly in a robbery, but her murderer had never been found or held accountable. I based her outfit off of the recently unvailed statue of her in Winchester, England.
Tumblr media
Queen of Sheba
For Ariel, I chose to depict the Queen of Sheba, since they both traveled long ways to a different place. The Queen of Sheba is mentioned in the Tanakh and Apocrypha, as well as folktales. She traveled to the Kingdom of Israel to meet King Shlomo and test his wisdom. Many have attributed her to being the woman voice in Shlomo's Song of Songs. She was a powerful and wealthy leader, and almost managed to best Shlomo in knowledge. According to tradition, she converted to Judaism and travled back to Ethiopia and led her people towards Judaism.
Tumblr media
Queen Shelmazion
For Snow White, I chose to depict Queen Shelamzion. Queen Shelamzion was one of the last independent Jewish rulers of Judea before the total Roman takeover. Roman sources absolutely smeared her name, likely because Shelamzion was a powerful Jewish woman who opposed the Roman occupation. However, Shelamzion was a good rular, who attempted to make peace among her people, and is credited with saving seventy sages from Roman slaughter. It is said that because of her righteousness, during her rule, it rained only on Shabbat so that farmers would not miss out on needed worktime due to the rain, since they weren't working on Shabbat anyway, and that the harvest in Judea were always bountiful.
I hope you learned something and appreciate my depictions of Jewish Disney Princesses :)
I have a ko-fi if you'd like to tip, but there's absolutely no obligation.

Stature of Licoricia of Winchester. Leviticus & Matthew "Love your neighbor as yourself.” 有钱的十三世纪犹大女人和他的儿子。纪念碑下部记下申命记和马太福音(耶稣重复经上所言)“爱人如己。”这个城市有很多古迹和传奇,都是上千年之久。另外近代大文豪也流连忘返,如写骄傲与偏见的Jane Austen 在这里度过最后的时间。英国诗人John Keats为城市写名诗,另外of course,大教堂和the great hall是与De Vinci Code写的地方有关。我们听到很好正宗的Evensong service. 我喜欢 The hospital of st cross, 英国最早的慈善机构是 the order of noble poverty。今天是母亲节,当然先要好好关心纪念自己的母亲,然后再考虑自己或其他人的母亲,另外听到自己的大学母校南京大学与其他三位中国名校首先参与不与西方名校排名的活动,学校领导真是脑子坏特了,有几个的确以前是学渣,哈哈,怪不得我们这些出来的学生也是平庸之辈,无胆无脑。若传言是真,为母校痛心。

“Medieval Anglo-Jewish women were a constant presence in law courts. There are whole generations of women who survive in the records of the extraordinary bureaucracy of thirteenth-century England, most notably in the seventy-two extant rolls of the Exchequer of the Jews for the dates 1219–1290, but also in marriage contracts, close rolls, letters, tallages, and shetarot (i.e., starrs, bonds of debt or acquittance written in Hebrew and according to Jewish custom), among other miscellaneous documents. Michael Adler in 1934 proclaimed the Anglo-Jewess, for the vital role she played in the English economy and courts, “unequalled in those days in any country.” Barrie Dobson maintained that the Anglo-Jewish woman was “a more influential and even formidable figure than her Christian counterpart.” Victoria Hoyle’s work on moneylending between Anglo-Jewish and Christian women documents “641 references to 310 distinct and individual Jewish women…in the published plea rolls” of the Jewish Exchequer, not counting cases of ambiguity. Hannah Meyer, in her impressive 2009 Cambridge dissertation, concluded that “using gender as a primary tool of analysis” for the available records means “the inescapable visibility of Jewish [female] uniqueness”.
In the thirteenth century, several major Anglo-Jewish financiers were women. Licoricia of Winchester, about whom Suzanne Bartlet wrote a posthumously published book, is only the wealthiest and most famous among them. Others include Henna of York, Mirabelle of Gloucester, Belia of Bedford, Chera of Winchester, and Abigail of London. These are women for whom we can track full careers, who travelled and appeared in court independently, owned properties, and lent mostly to men of various social and ecclesiastical stations. They and lesser figures appear startlingly frequently in national records, and it appears that they were literate and leading figures in Jewish–Christian business relations.”
Williams-Boyarin Adrienne, “Anglo-Jewish women at court”, in: Women intellectuals and leaders in the Middle Ages

14/02/2022-Peregrine, Grey Wagtail, daffodils and more at Winchester Cathedral, the River Itchen and St. Thomas Church
Week two of the new hybrid working system began at work today and I was in the office firstly on Monday this week. Despite initially thinking I would return to only bringing my bridge camera with me to the office once a month as I did pre-pandemic after bringing it on Thursday when working in the office last I wanted to bring it again today. This was mostly because I came so close to taking my first Peregrine at Winchester Cathedral picture since last June when they had last year’s chicks around - I have photographed them at St. Thomas Church also in Winchester, and other Peregrines at Keyhaven and St. John The Evangelist Church in Slimbridge since - but I couldn’t quite do it as I believe Winnie the female who was there was very mobile on Thursday. I saw on a Facebook group I am in someone had posted some brilliant photos of this Peregrine so it made me want to try for one more. I thought that if I brought my bridge camera and managed a Peregrine photo at the cathedral it might settle me a bit into the new routine and the thinking of it that I won’t be able to bring my camera too often as its different being in the office in a city to work to my working from home lunch time walks. And it might help bed me into bringing the camera once a month, although I had thought February might be a candidate for two camera days in the office as with the signs of spring emerging like blossom and flowers one end of the month could look quite different to the other. But after today I did think of a tweak to my routine to say I will only bring my camera on office days on one block of days so if I don’t get a certain shot on a day for example I can then bring it the next time I am in the office. That will probably be a case of doing it a Thursday and then a Monday as on most Wednesdays I go round my Dad’s in the evening so am keen to take advantage of not having any or a lot (depending on any taken at home in the evening as always) of photos to process in the evening with not much time to do it and obviously for one week being in the office the next day on a Thursday.
I got to have a little walk around the city this morning before work and it looked stunning in the sunshine. I firstly stopped by the discovery centre which houses the library as I wanted to seen the new Licoricia of Winchester statue. This was unveiled on Thursday and was supposed to be unveiled by the Prince of Wales but that wasn’t meant to be due to his positive Covid test. It looked so lovely this morning in the sun. As did a church along the same road with the sun shining through the stained glass windows a really lovely scene. I am so thrilled and inspired by the statue. I took the first picture in this photoset of the statue. More information can be found on her here: https://jwa.org/encyclopedia/article/licoricia-of-winchester
I reached Winchester Cathedral in this morning and the buildings and grounds there particularly looked so beautiful. As did St. Thomas Church in the early morning sunshine and blossom nearby with nice pink blossom I saw at the cathedral at lunch time. It was such a beautiful morning and was great to see the snowdrops and daffodils which I got the second picture in this photoset of looking really good again in this sun. I took the third and fourth pictures in this photoset of the cathedral grounds and St. Thomas Church. I took the fifth picture in this photoset of a beautiful green looking view over the cathedral grounds and beyond at lunch time.
I am very pleased to say I saw the Peregrine I believe Winnie the female at the cathedral at lunch time sat high at the top of the north tower master of all she surveys. I managed five photos with my bridge camera including the sixth, seventh and eighth pictures in this photoset so I certainly got my fill of photos. The sun was still shining here and there at this stage and a burst of golden light caressed this falcon’s fine feathers. They were simply amazing views of an epic bird which I just loved seeing and admiring again today. I’ve more often taken photos of the Peregrines on the ledge where they nest than at the top of the tower where it was today so it was nice to take one high up on the top today where I first ever saw a Peregrine on the cathedral in 2018.
It really was a fitting day to come to the cathedral and so luckily be able to photograph views of it, daffodils and a Peregrine as its three years ago today that I first ever snuck my bridge camera in my work bag with the Peregrine the main aim which I took a photo of that day perfect for the bridge camera I’d had as a spare/second camera for a few months back then with the long zoom capabilities I love it for and I also took photos of a view and daffodil. That day revolutionized my watching wildlife on lunch breaks as it sort of allowed me to bring a little bit of what I enjoy doing at weekends into a working day once a month or more in some circumstances. Which is obviously what I was then able to do in a bigger way with my DSLR camera and lenses as well accessible to me at Lakeside and home on working from home days at lunch time so its a really nice point to appreciate the three years and the amazing times its given me and I can’t believe its been that long. And maybe also it was meant to be for the Peregrine photo today.
One of the conditions I set myself of bringing the camera today was that if I did it with the focus around the cathedral/St.Thomas I had to get down to the river Itchen on lunch too as I didn’t manage go on the two days working in the office last week and hadn’t since a visit on the essential cover rota system a month ago yesterday. And lo and behold in an area you can often see birds of prey soaring high up over trees I spotted a large raptor and saw in the binoculars it was this beautiful falcon. I got some amazing views of this bird in the binoculars and was really thrilled to see it. With my mind adjusting to on more cases than not when in the office watching wildlife in the day rather than taking photos this made me think there are magical moments like this out there even travelling to a city to work and I’ll always be able to have a personal moment being in aw of nature. I saw a Peregrine flying on the way back past the cathedral too.
Also at the river I was thrilled to see a thrilling bright Grey Wagtail land beside the water. It was an amazing view of the beautiful species I took the ninth picture in this photoset of it. It was so great to see it as I did look for this bird the last time I was here in January having not seen one in 2022 at this stage but I’ve now seen them in or around the New Forest twice this year including Acres Down on Saturday so its great to see them twice in quick succession.
I took the tenth and final picture in this photoset of a smashing moon that crept in and out of the clouds on the way home getting towards full now. I found it uplifting seeing wildlife and taking photos in my working day today.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Peregrine Falcon, lots of Feral Pigeons, brilliant views of Blackbird which I saw a lot of and Blue Tit, possible Pied Wagtail and Grey Wagtail.
