My mother and I saw your post about the mantle being solid and we've got a couple questions.
1. What is a mantle plume in the context of a solid mantle? Is it a column of magma from the outer core through the mantle?
2. How do subduction zones work? Why do subduction volcanoes erupt magma if the mantle is solid? Is that why subduction magma is generally more viscous than mantle plume magma?
I have a diagram! This shows a Mid Ocean Ridge and subduction zone system, I don't have a mantle plume diagram, but the dynamics are similar.
Tumblr media
First, let's talk about the three ways you can melt rock:
Increasing the temperature
Decreasing the pressure
Adding volatiles (aka water)
The first one is pretty straight forward- when you increase the heat, things melt. But bodies of hot rock will also melt when they undergo depressurization. Despite the heat, at great depths the overlying pressure will force rock to stay in a solid form. But if that rock is rapidly moved upward through mantle upwelling, you're gonna see some partial melting. This is what we see at mid ocean ridges (point A) and mantle plumes: hot, buoyant rock moves upward and melts due to high temperatures and the release of pressure. It's kinda like when you make stew in an instant pot and it starts to boil when you release the pressure.
So a mantle plume is more like the upward portion of a convection cell, where the rock in the plume is hotter and less dense than the rock in the surrounding mantle. Magma is only produced closer to the surface, where the plume is interacting with the crust and upper mantle. The type of volcanism (and lava) you see associated with a plume depends on whether the plume is interacting with oceanic crust or continental crust. In Hawai'i, a hotspot located under oceanic crust, you get very runny, low-viscosity magmas like this one:
Tumblr media
At continental hotspots like Yellowstone you get highly viscous (sticky) magmas that trap gas and produce massive Plinian eruptions.
For your second question about subduction zones, you have to start at the mid ocean ridge. When oceanic plates moves apart, mantle rock moves up to fill the gap and new oceanic crust is produced. Point B represents the hydration of that oceanic crust. Heated water penetrates the oceanic slab through cracks, alters it, and (this is the tricky part) is bound into the rock. When I say that water is incorporated into the rock I don’t mean like a water droplet trapped in pores in the rock, but water is actually incorporated into the mineral structure at an atomic level. This hydrothermal metamorphism makes serpentinites:
Tumblr media
This rock is 10% water by weight and it makes up the ocean floor underneath all that sedimentary cover (which also has a decent amount of water associated with it).
Now that mafic oceanic slab is dense, much denser than the buoyant granitic rocks of the continental crust (lmao I know calling granite buoyant makes me sounds crazy, but it is compared to oceanic crust and the mantle). So when those plates collide the oceanic slab goes right under it. The slab descends into the mantle, the heat and pressure increase, and that serpentinized slab is metamorphosed and dehydrated (point C). All that water bound into the rock comes right back out.
That brings us back to the third way you can melt rock: just add water. The influx of all those fluids into the mantle beneath the continent creates magma. Those magmas rise, percolate, combine, rise some more, and result in volcanism. And since you're melting continental crust you're going to get pretty viscous magmas, but the volcanism in subduction zones can be incredibly diverse, you honestly see everything.

TODAY, AN INTERNATIONAL team of researchers shared an extraordinarily detailed atlas of human brain cells, mapping its staggering diversity of neurons. The atlas was published as part of a massive package of 21 papers in the journal Science, each taking complementary approaches to the same overarching questions: What cell types exist in the brain? And what makes human brains different from those of other animals?
With hundreds of billions of cells tangled together, mapping the whole brain is like trying to plot every star in the Milky Way. (The inner workings of each cell are mini worlds of their own.) But just as better telescopes make the universe clearer to astronomers, the analytical tools presented here give neuroscientists “unprecedented resolution looking at brain cells, which will open up new windows for understanding brain function,” says Andrea Beckel-Mitchener, deputy director of the US National Institutes of Health’s BRAIN Initiative, which funded the cell atlas projects.
With a comprehensive map of cell types, understanding how neurons work—and how brain disorders cause them to malfunction—is within reach. “This is a first step towards defining the cellular complexity of the brain,” says Bing Ren, a professor of cellular and molecular medicine at UC San Diego, and a lead investigator on the atlas project. “The results have been nothing but astonishing.”
This isn’t the first brain cell atlas, and it won’t be the last. But it is incredibly detailed. The 21-study collection reports the findings of the BRAIN Initiative’s last five-year funding program, BICCN (BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network). The NIH allocated $100 million for this endeavor, aiming to catalog brain cell types in more depth than ever before. “The only other large-scale biology problem that we have thought about of this scope is the Human Genome Project,” says Beckel-Mitchener. “The cell atlas project is the biggest team science effort in neuroscience.”
Historically, it’s been nearly impossible to get a handle on the complexity of the human brain. With so many interconnected pieces, “it’s not really a single organ—it’s like a thousand organs,” says Ed Lein, a senior investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science who helped lead the atlas project.
“Prior to this data set, it was just a hypothesis that the brain was really complicated,” adds Amy Bernard, the director of life sciences at the Kavli Foundation, who was not involved in this project. “Now, we can see the cellular diversity and wrap our arms around the problem.”  Neuroscientists often think about the brain in terms of connections between cells, like a wiring diagram. But the brain’s wiring doesn’t say anything about what its individual units are made of. To understand what makes brain cells diverse, Lein says that neuroscientists are borrowing tricks from the genomics world.
All cells within a given brain share the same DNA, but different cells use different sets of genes, which determine what proteins each one makes. This, Lein says, “relates very strongly to all the other properties of the cell,” shaping what it looks like, how it develops, and what other cells it will connect with.
In an earlier phase of the BRAIN Initiative, scientists developed methods to create a cellular map of the mouse brain. But bringing these tools to human brains is no small feat. Our brains are about 15 times the size of a mouse’s, with a thousand times as many neurons. One major goal of this work was to expand methods used in mice to “create an atlas that tackles the problem of scale,” Lein says.
This was a massive undertaking, relying on collaboration between 250 researchers across 45 institutions worldwide. “People are familiar with big teams like this in fields like astrophysics, but it’s new in neuroscience,” says Bernard. “We took a divide-and-conquer approach,” Ren says, divvying processed tissues from three donated human brains across labs. From there, molecular biologists sequenced DNA, then passed the results off to computational biologists for analysis.
In one study led by Ren, researchers analyzed the molecular switches turning different genes off and on—the internal configuration defining what type of cell a neuron becomes—within more than a million human brain cells. They identified over 100 distinct cell types across 42 different brain regions, far more than the team expected. With this expansive data set, the team trained deep-learning models to read long strings of genetic code and predict how noncoding sequence variants—hard-to-read chunks of DNA that don’t contain instructions for specific proteins—shape cell identity. Ren compares it to reading a book in a foreign language. “Initially, you know nothing,” Ren says. But using a dictionary built with machine-learning tools, “you can start at least making sense of words within that long string of characters.” Many of these gene sequences were indecipherable to researchers before, but their deep-learning model was able to extract hidden patterns and “learn something that our human mind hasn’t yet been able to grasp,” Ren says.  This paper brings scientists closer to being able to identify how someone’s cells work—and how they might falter—from how their genes are regulated. The researchers highlighted several cell types that appear to be strongly linked to neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. They hope that by understanding the brain at this level of detail, they’ll someday be able to trace brain diseases back to their genetic roots, and find treatments that target them. This is “the holy grail for human genetics research,” says Jennifer Erwin, a molecular geneticist and neuroscientist at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, who was not involved in this project.
While this grail is still out of reach, it’s within sight—and the BRAIN Initiative has years more research queued up and underway. This effort focused on translating methods developed for mouse brains to the brains of humans and monkeys, characterizing cell types, and figuring out what is unique to humans on a molecular level. Currently, many clinical trials fail because they can’t replicate promising results from mouse studies. With a more nuanced understanding of where the brains of mice and humans are alike, and where they’re not, scientists will be better equipped to predict whether a drug will fail in humans before getting too deep into testing.  As much as it reveals, no brain cell atlas can tell you anything about connectivity, or how neurons form networks and communicate across brain regions. Researchers first attempted to create a map of the brain’s neural fiber pathways over a decade ago with the Human Connectome Project, but much more work needs to be done to understand how these connections are formed, how they change over time, and how they generate thought and behavior.
Future BRAIN Initiative programs plan to study neural diversity across humans, but the slate of projects published today did not. Most of these studies analyzed tissue from the same three brains, all donated by neurotypical men of European ancestry. Given the time, effort, and tax dollars required to run experiments at this scale, researchers have to choose between molecular detail and human diversity. “You can either go broad or you can go deep, but you can’t do both at the same time,” Lein says.  Funding agencies like the NIH tend to prioritize the generation of new data over the reuse of existing data, but reusing this data is going to be very important. “Once data is published, it’s not dead. It’s there to be used,” says Bernard. She believes that, now that this massive atlas is online, funding should be funneled to people who want to dig into it—not just researchers who want to add to the pile. “It should be sexy to rediscover things from old data,” she says. Ren’s team made their atlas of genetic switches publicly available, hoping that scientists will mine it to fuel drug discovery, basic science, and clinical research.
These findings lay the groundwork for a new era of neuroscience, where finding personalized treatments for brain disorders is a little less impossible. “Science is somewhat incremental, but people always want to advertise it as groundbreaking,” Bernard says. “This is both.”

Reading through Viridarium Umbris : Part 1
Viridarium Umbris by Daniel Schulke is a wonderful, informative, generally lovely book. Its major downfall is its lack of a table of contents--In my attempts to create one for it, I have discovered it’s insane wealth of content. Daniel Schulke really did pack every page with as much shit as he could, and although I have skimmed through it before, I haven’t really read it much in-depth.
So I’m going to read through it in its entirety and write down my thoughts because, in short, I am a crazy person.
Part One : Exordium
Psalm of the Resurrection of the Bones. ohhh this is good. You love to see it. I like this. I can feel the power of it on my skin; the symbolism in the poetry of Viridarium Umbris has always impressed me. The theme of resurrection and invocation; the imagery of the Tree of Spirit... It outlines a path of shadows and usurpation, of power and knowledge... It reminds me of my own path, which I walked un-illumined by books that were anywhere relevant to me, it has been only recently that I was able to find any that were. I am, of course, very fond of flowery language and earthen imagery--though I feel, that unlike many books I have read this is not just an aesthetic, the dressing-up of one tradition to look like another, but the surfaced bones of knowledge lost, or perhaps never gained.
Exordium. Oh yes, I am fond of talks of where the knowledge of the Art and Herbalism began; the in-dwelt fire of heaven within the belly of man. It’s always been of interest to me, every culture has their own tale of it; my own path has lead me to mine, the fire of heaven being lightning sent to strike down mankind, wielded by sages and witches alike. The Exordium details the birthplace of the Greenwood and the Viridarium Umbris, making mention of Cain as the first tiller of fields and father of sorcery.. We should get along then, ah?
“For those wise and skilled in the use of green wisdom, all sorcerous art may be accomplished through means of plants.” is of particular interest to me, Wortcunning is the pillar of my practice, and at times I feel as if I am not living up to my full potential because of it; I do not commune with angels and demons, so surely I am not as good at what I do as I could be.
I believe Daniel Schulke and I have described similar things, his “Faith Beneath the Wanderer’s Heels” is my “Dirt Worship”. I must say I am incredibly tempted to skip significant portions of the text. It isn’t boring or even particularly unengaging, I am probably just exhausted. “Don’t be an unworthy cunt and try to approach the spirits like a bastard” appears to be the gist of this part.
The Blessing of the Viridarius Upon the Seeker-in-Truth. I can just imagine this being sung around a big bonfire some Walpurgisnacht, a circle of witches holding loaves of bread and cups of wine.  The Curse of the Viridarius Upon the False. Ohhh yes I love this, an exorcism, a charm, an evocation, a curse... I’m already scheming of ways to use it.
The illustrations in Viridarium Umbris are among my favorite parts of it, they’re incredibly well made and packed with symbolic value; diagrams of work and information.. I’m a visual person, yknow, so I like some visuals. I really wish I knew who the illustrator was, they’ve done a wonderful job. Capturing the medieval woodcut style present in so many occult books is difficult. ah, it appears the illustrations are by Daniel Schulke, he’s done a great job. I’m finally going to bed before I pass out from exhaustion.

How the Melt is Creating Energy
The Mesmerals Market is a global leader in the fields of alternative energy and alternative medicines. The market is seeing a number of players entering the game, with major players like Emerson and Chemist to name a few. The industry is seeing growth, with new companies mushrooming every month. A lot of the companies in the market are specializing in specific sectors like microorganisms and cell and tissue engineering. With so many players in the market, it is important to understand the current trends and the mel's market forecasts to choose the right company.
Microorganisms: The market is seeing a major influx of Microorganisms Players. Two of the first players to enter the mel's market are Glutathione and Spirulina. These two companies are seeing growth in the energy arena. They are both looking at ways to produce energy from microorganisms. Other companies are looking at how to use mels' nutrients to make it into a source of supplemental energy.
Cell and Tissue Engineering: The mel's market is also seeing Cell and Tissue Engineering companies getting into the act. This is a very strategic market for companies who are looking to make their mark. The meals market has the potential to reach huge levels and provide companies with an endless source of resources. Companies that are well versed in this field will have the upper hand in any negotiation with suppliers.
Biotechnological Plants: There is one company in the mel's market that is starting to take the mel's market by storm. It is located in Australia and is called GenFX. It is a biotechnology company that uses mels market research for energy production and commercialization. It has already captured a huge market share in Australia and is increasing every week.
Oil Companies: Another group of companies who are keeping a close eye on the mel's market forecast are oil companies. They have a number of options they can choose from to increase their mels market Research Reports production. One of these options is to increase the rate of their melt extraction. This is particularly important for those in the North Sea regions where oil is the main commodity.
Governments and Non-Profit Corporations: Finally, there are some large corporations who have been keeping a close eye on the mel's market as well. They have developed a large research and development facilities, which are geared towards researching alternative forms of energy that are much more environmentally friendly. Most of these companies are quite proactive about their environment and their own carbon footprint.
In the mel's market, the demand for gas will continue to grow. It is anticipated that gas prices will continue to rise for the next several years. However, one can expect that with global demand growing for gas mels, the number of drilling rigs dedicated to producing mels market share will continue to grow. Many of the large gas producing companies like Shell and Enron have news operations at sea. They also have production facilities on land that are able to support additional production.
Other sectors which are expected to benefit from the mel's market include biofuels, transport, construction and infrastructure. Although mels market players are not directly related to these sectors of the economy, they tend to go hand-in-hand with gas prices. As well as prices continue to rise, you can expect that these sectors will see an increase in demand for their products.
The mel's market is also good news for the environment. Because there is no demand for gas, less natural resources will be needed. As a result, landfills will not need to be populated. This is a positive step towards reducing the impact of the carbon dioxide that is produced through combustion.
Another benefit of the mel's market is the minimal amount of drilling that will be required to support its production. Since there is very little gas demand, there will be very little investment required. In addition, it can save time for geologists who typically have to drill thousands of feet into the ground to extract oil and gas. Instead, mels market forecast can drill to a much greater depth.
One of the major challenges that geologists and other people who studied the mels market Industry research had faced in the past is the difficulty of accessing the deposits that hold mels. The meals market has solved this problem. Now anyone can tap mels market research reports as long as they have access to the right contacts. This allows geologists to go after more mels market Analysis as the market grows.
Summary: The research team projects that the Mannosylerythritol Lipids (MELs) market size will grow from XXX in 2020 to XXX by 2027, at an estimated CAGR of XX. The base year considered for the study is 2020, and the market size is projected from 2020 to 2027.

evermore: Track-by-Track review
I didn't think I'd be writing another review for a Taylor Swift album so soon after folklore but here we are. Truthfully though, evermore feels more like a figment of my imagination than a real album, and as a result this album has been a grower for me. When Taylor said evemore would be the sister record to folklore, I was curious as to the distinguishable differences between the two, because Taylor wouldn't simply give us the same album twice. evermore is, strangely, both the wild younger sister that's more experimental and the wise older sister with a mature outlook on life. Where folklore was a product of isolation, evermore is a product of creativity and that can be felt in the music.
I’ve written my thoughts and theories on each song, and bolded my favourites, below the cut, if you’re interested. I also included my current ranking at the bottom.
Taylor has been very good at picking leading singles for the folklore/evermore era. willow is brilliantly catchy while maintaining the alternative folk sound that she established in folklore. Her vocals suit the song so well, especially on ‘follow’/“hollow” in the chorus. They pair so beautifully with the mesmerising production. The reason this song is one my favourites is purely because of the rhythm and the guitar. The lyrics are, for once, a bonus. As an entry point to evermore, willow does not ease the listener in, the song instead throws the listener in the deep end — which I feel was intentional, as Taylor said evermore was the product of wandering further into the folklorian woods.
champagne problems is easily my favourite song on this album. Storytelling is Taylor's biggest strength as a songwriter and I think this song is a achingly beautiful example of what an emotive storyteller Taylor is. It would be so difficult for me to pick a favourite lyric from this song but I love how she sets in train in the opening line, "you booked the night train for a reason, so you could sit there in this hurt / bustling crowds or silent sleepers, you're not sure which is worse." The accompaniment is gorgeous and the composition of the bridge is breathtaking. Every time the bridge plays I get chills.
gold rush was a grower for me. I'm still not a fan of the intro/outro but I enjoy the production in the rest of the song once the beat kicks in. I think it's one of the more experimental sounds on evermore but it's very catchy. I won't even talk about how the chorus called me out with "I don't like slow-motion, double vision in a rose blush, I don't like that falling feels like flying 'til the bone crush."
'tis the damn season is the non-holiday-holiday song that still has a classic sound and production. I know this song is Dorothea's perspective but I get a lot of illicit affairs parallels with this one as well: "don't call me baby" / "you could call me babe for the weekend", "what started in beautiful rooms ends with meetings in parking lots" / "the road not taken looks real good now, time flies, messy as the mud on your truck tires".
tolerate it is a hard song for me to review because I literally zone out every time I listen to it. I think it's my brain's way of protecting me from toxic relationship trauma 🙃 but it's another gut-punch track five, what else is new? I mean she literally said "now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life, drawing hearts in the byline, always taking up too much space or time," and broke my nervous system.
no body, no crime is the best country song Taylor has ever written, period. The sirens at the start, the storytelling, the way it sounds like an old-school murder-mystery movie. HAIM on the backing vocals were great, though I do wish they had at least a verse of their own. That's literally my only critique of this song. It's that good.
There's so much maturity in Taylor's outlook on happiness. I connect this song to her tarnished relationship Sc*tt/BMG and how she's happy after leaving but she was also happy during the time she was with them. I really enjoyed the simple addition of the piano and the way it built up to add depth to the production. Taylor's delivery of the line "no one teaches what to do when a good man hurts you and you know you hurt him too" really hits me.
dorothea is a really nostalgic, retro school-dance-vibe, kinda playful song with a personality, which I adore. The production is absolutely timeless. I woke up today with the chorus stuck in my head. I think "if you're ever tired of being known for who you know, you know, you'll always know me" is fun word play and I'm a nerd of that type of thing. (Side note: to me, this song feels very reminiscent of her friendship with Karlie Kloss, right down to the "selling makeup in magazines.")
coney island gives me desolate, abandoned theme park vibes. The simplicity of the production only enhances it. It's everything I could've hoped for in a song titled "coney island" and featuring The National. Matt Berninger's vocals are absolutely astounding. What does it say about me that my favourite aspect of this song is the feeling of despair laced into its bloodstream.
ivy is another favourite but what did I expect from a song filled to the brim with longing and mentioning the crescent moon? The instrumentation and her vocal styling is similar to willow. There are also lyrical parallels of "... your freezing hand, taking mine" / "I'm begging for you to take my hand" and "how's one to know I'd meet you where the spirit meets the bone" / "I never would've known from the look on your face" and she echoes both those sentiments in a different way after the respective bridges and I wonder if that's intentional. Knowing Taylor Swift, probably.
cowboy like me belongs in the center of a country/folk/slow blues Venn diagram. It's the perfect blend of the three genres. Marcus Mumford's back vocals sound so good with Taylor's. "We could be the way forward, and I know I'll pay for it" and "the skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to fuck this up" are great lyrics.
I'm not all about the way long story short stars but the song quickly settles into its skin. This is easily the most pop-sounding song on evermore but it's still somewhat experimental in comparison to Taylor's existing discography and I think it's cool that she can find space to experiment within a musical space that she has all but mastered. Say what you will but Taylor Swift knows how to make hits no matter the genre. The lyrics "he's passing by, rare as the glimmer of a comet in the sky and he feels like home" reminds me so much of Call It What You Want.
marjorie gave me chills on the very first listen when Taylor sings about how her grandmother left her backlogged dreams to her. I love that they used her grandmother's actual vocals in the background, that's a really heartwarming detail. This song comes with some really solid advice too. It just feels very personal. I love the way production builds on "what does didn't stay dead" right to the bridge, which is my favourite part of the song.
closure is easily the most experimental song on the album with that the scratch tape sound and those drums. I love the sheer pettiness in her tone and the lyric "don't treat me like some situation that needs to be handled" is brilliant. That said, this is probably my least favourite. I think it's a cool song but just not for me.
evermore has some of the most beautiful lyrics on the album. "I replay my footsteps on each stepping stone, trying to find the one where I went wrong" and "barefoot in the wildest winter" are some of my favourites. I'm not a big fan of the sudden shift in tempo on either end of the bridge but Justin Vernon's falsetto makes up for it. The production is otherwise beautiful.

Review (In Progress): THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT (2015)
Tumblr media
The third and final (so far) game in The Witcher trilogy is big. Very big. Massive. Supermassive. Maybe I’m just a little intimidated by the depth and width and density of the game, but as of this writing, I’ve clocked in 62.4 hours on the game. That’s compared to the 48.1 hours of The Witcher and 31.5 hours of The Witcher 2. I’m closing in on the point where I’ve played Wild Hunt more than the first two games combined. From where I sit, there’s no end in sight, either; I have yet to complete the story, in addition to multiple sidequests, witcher contracts, and treasure hunts, not to mention the jawdropping expansion quests Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine, which combined supposedly equal the length of the main story quest itself. Throw everything in a blender and pour it out, and I’ll be surprised if I eventually finish everything I’ve a mind for in under 150 hours. This is a big game. This is a dense game, packed with content every couple of miles or so, in a world where you can’t walk into a town without stumbling onto someone -- or something -- in need, and that’s ignoring the contracts on notice boards. People walk, talk, argue, cough, stumble around drunk, and get into fights with you. Oh yes, run afoul of local gangs, and they will come for you. Meanwhile, the vast open world is teeming with monsters to battle and loot, from the continual presence of drowners to the new griffins and basilisks. An overwhelming amount of content in a series that already packs plenty of content into each game. It would be far, far too much and monotonous if it wasn’t for one thing: developers CD Projekt Red write compelling material, and they know how to write a damn good story.
When the game opened up, it looked just like any other open world game I’ve ever played, and immediately I felt a pang of disappointment. I’ve done Far Cry 3, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and like many of my gaming generation I get what to do. Seek out loot, checkpoints for fast travel, towns, fight things to get xp, ignore the “pressing” main story in favor of side quests for cool shit, yadda yadda yadda. Considering the first two Witcher games felt like original experiences in what they were trying to do, to walk into such a generic open-world framework was such a let down.
At first.
But then, something strange began to happen: I settled in. Two random quests twisted and convoluted into a connected thread, which was followed by a third main quest which circled back to this thread and elaborated on it. Suddenly a character who just seemed off her rocker was now a fearfully sympathetic human being, now seen in the light of someone else’s story. CD Projeckt Red hooked me, hooked me bad, and now this wide wide world was no longer a series of performances, it was the lives of people in this world and how Geralt affects them -- just like in the previous games. Only here, it’s bigger and wider and seemingly less connected, but it still all comes back together. Choices matter. People matter. The world itself twists and winds according to you, the witcher, and who you side with/fight for. Every other open world game I’ve played has had Things To Do, and this is no exception, but now suddenly it feels like everything matters. Before, everything I did felt like it was to further a progression percentage, to get trophies and upgrade items and simply arcade my way through a sandbox which promised “openness” but really was just all the levels of a video game laid out side-by-side so you could see them all at once instead of having to press through to get to the next one. This is the first time where I’ve really, honestly felt like I was walking through a living world, and to say that it’s captured me is an understatement. Where once I would have rolled my eyes at sidequesting in the face of a main quest where the point is to track someone down or save someone because it is incredibly important, now it feels like the most natural thing because the main quest requires you to go through some shit first. Every contract and quest met along the way furthers the main quest in some way or another, particularly when you open up new quests AFTER helping old friends, friends who now desperately need your help again, and what would happen if you weren’t there? Combine all of this with exceptional voice acting, talented writing, detailed animations, and we have compelling content literally around every corner. And that’s even when you’re just out searching for treasure or diagrams to make better witcher armor! Stories pop up everywhere, all of it interesting, even the slightest of things, and it truly crafts a distracting world to be enveloped by.
A living breathing world would be one thing all on its own, but thankfully Wild Hunt features the best-looking graphics in the series to date. I was genuinely worried that my old rig wouldn’t be able to handle a massive open-world game from 2015 without some tweaks (my desktop is old, shut up), but for the most part I’m running everything on high and it is breathtaking. Weather effects, god rays, BLOOM jesus christ I’m appreciating bloom in a video game for the very first time and I hate that I am but god fuck the first time you see the moon behind clouds in this game with bloom on, and I’m talking a full moon so it is BRIGHT and BEAUTIFUL and just. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Detailed textures and character models, the best in the series so far, a wide palette of colors (which sometimes makes the game look like a living painting, in the best of ways), absolutely masterful work. There’s the odd object-poking-through-something-it-really-shouldn’t, or the glitchy human being moving/acting/dying in ways they shouldn’t be, but that’s also a staple of both open world games and this series in general. Jank happens, especially in a game this size. It’s not as breaking as it has been in certain aspects of the first two games, and it’s mostly Bethesda-level charming. What matters though is that it doesn’t kill the experience, nor does it happen so often that it feels like the game is bugged or broken.
Combat, meanwhile, is still not perfect but it’s the best it’s been in the trilogy. Fast and furious, yet rewarding for those who have more patient skills, swordplay is easy and comfortable and versatile. Similar to the second game, one needs only turn the camera towards whichever enemy they want to attack and Geralt automatically goes for whichever monster or human is highlighted. Sometimes this can be fraught as the game will erratically highlight a different character than the one you’re facing, or will transfer the highlight to a different enemy if the one you were facing dances out of sight due to a roll or dodge or other maneuver. But it’s only frustrating sometimes; this was a flaw far more prevalent in the second game than here, and the lock-on mechanic is a godsend when paired against high-level creatures. With patience and tactics I’ve been able to competently square with beasts far too high level for me to tackle, and actually come out the victor, an idea that would be absolute suicide in the first two games. But now strategy versus simple number rolls can prevail, provided you are prepared and/or willing to have the patience to chip away while dodging for your life.
Wild Hunt is one of the few game worlds I’ve entered that feels stunningly alive. Whenever I start up the game, I am transported. Taken away. Breathlessly in awe of how real and vibrant the physical presence of the visuals on screen are. What a strange gift to behold. And, yet, aggravatingly, it frustrates me that most opinions I have encountered are that players don’t need to play through Witcher 1 & 2 in order to play this game. You certainly can, but so much context is lost. Geralt’s relationships with Triss and Yennifer and the struggles between them (that is, should you decide to romance Triss); the nostalgia and heartache of coming back to Kaer Morhen and revisting the other witchers; the friends and former alliances who pop up under vastly different circumstances; the paths taken and decisions made which impact where and how you begin this story. Wild Hunt is the culmination of a near-decade’s worth of storytelling, and the rewards for having played through the previous two games are plentiful. Nilfgaard’s invasion has extra oomph knowing where they were before, and walking through Vizima’s capital now occupied by Emperor Emhyr is especially chilling and devastating. I have no doubt that someone could pick up this game and play it and get the jist of what’s going on without playing the first two games. But will it mean as much? I daresay no. It is absolutely essential to play the first two games to truly feel the depth of impact that this story -- this world -- has to offer.
At this point in time it seems I’m coming upon some kind of resolution to the story. I’m off in search of allies to help combat a vicious foe, meaning it’s time to wrap up any side quests I still have in my ledger. There’s a lot to do. Once I’ve reached the conclusion of this game, this story, I’ll provide a wrap-up review. For now, this deep and still ploughing through, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is not only the best of the trilogy, it makes me want to go all the way back to the first game and play through the whole series again with different choices, for different outcomes, if only to see the roads I did not take and who was left behind. This is an amazing experience with literally hours of content to take in, and I am eager to devour the remainder.
Score (So Far): 9/10

New one-shot while I procrastinate on the latest chapter of my serialized fic.
Hordak and Entrapta will keep working on the portal until it's perfect. After all, Hordak can't go home until it's perfect.
..
Catra chose to stay in the Crimson Wastes with Scorpia. To rule the desert as Warlord and her Princess. They got their happily ever after.
Adora was not dragged back to the Fright Zone.
No deus ex First Ones Runesword was ever thrown at Hordak and Entrapta’s feet.
The portal was never opened.
Reality was never unmade.
As Entrapta suggested, the pair just kept working on their project. Refusing to declare it ‘Done’ until it was perfect. It could not be done until it was perfect.
Hordak could not go home until it was perfect.
“I’ve added new grounding stabilizers.” Entrapta was explaining.
Hordak watched how her prehensile hair moved as she spoke. Pointing out on the diagrams and animations of the displays what the truly important details were. How the tendrils would curl around to frame one image, or thrust out and straighten like pikes to point out other details. No one in the Horde Empire possessed a physical attribute like that. This was something that could only be found on Etheria. This was something that could only be experienced with Entrapta.
Once he left, he would never get this animated and enthralling briefing experience again.
“That should prevent any future overloads and explosions, and also allow us to hold it open longer. Maybe not long enough for solid matter to pass through. But at least long enough for you to get your signal out. That way, at least- Hordak?” She paused in her rambling explanation. Hair stopped coiling and undulating around the computers display and instead frizzed out slightly with her sudden frustration. “Are you paying attention?”
He cleared his throat. Hordak hadn’t realized he was staring. Staring with an absurd expression of dreamy admiration on his face. “Ah, ahm. Yes. Your improvements appear sound in theory. We shall implement them immediately! I cannot return home until it is perfect!”
Off to the side, Imp fluttered down from the rafters to perch next to Emily. Both deamon and robot exchanged a look. As if they somehow knew more than their masters did.
Talons clacked against the keys of a lab console as Hordak typed furiously. Line, after line, of complexed coding. In the peripheral of his vision, he saw a shadow of lavender and violet slink up around him.
“What’cha doing?” Entrapta asked from above him. Her hair lifting her up to suspend her over the console so she could both examine the lines of complicated code, as well as look down into his face to read his expression.
“I am composing the message we will send through the portal for Horde Prime.” He supplied easily enough.
“Oh.” Entrapta looked at the lines of code again. They filled the whole screen. “I didn’t realize it had to be so complexed. I thought it was just gonna be a series of beeps. Like ‘SOS’ or something.”
Hordak’s taloned fingers paused, mid-typing. He looked back up at the lines of text he’d already composed. Then he looked away again, refusing to admit that he might be embarrassed. “The Emperor of the Known Universe does not answer to random beeps without context. He must know it is form me.” He informed her. “It must be perfect. I cannot return home until it is perfect.”
Entrapta set down her welding torch and lifted her mask to smile at her work. Using her hair to lift herself off the floor. “I think we’re ready for our next test. Pull the lever!”
But Hordak wasn’t looking at her. He had picked up something from the floor of her work station. Something on the floor suspiciously close to the waste bin, as if she tried to throw it away but missed. An ivory colored envelope bade from heavy cardstock. He opened it to discover an invitation to a gathering of some kind.
“Oh, that.” Entrapta had slunk up beside him, her hair never making a sound as she moved. “You can just throw that away.”
“What is this?” He asked, genuinely curious. It was not an invitation to any event in the Fright Zone. The fact that no paper so nice existed in the Fright Zone aside, the invitation stated that the event would be held in Plumeria. A territory of Etheria that was in open resistance of the Horde. Why would they be sending invitations to gatherings to someone they knew was working in collaboration with the leader of the Horde?
“It’s just the traditional invitation to Princess Prom.” Using a single tendril of hair, Entrapta snapped her welding mask back down over her face –although, there was nothing left that needed to be welded. “They only sent it to me because I’m a Princess. They have to. But I wasn’t going to go.” Hordak watched her pitter around the lab, her mask down over her face. A coping mechanism he noticed she did only when she was about to feel difficult emotions. It hurt her to receive the invitation. Why? Because she had placed herself on the other side of the line. Because she was in league with the enemies of the Hostess and probably every other Princess there? Was she afraid they would ostracizes her if she did attend? If they did, they why invite her at all? Because of the convention of ‘tradition’.
“What do you do at this… Princess Prom?” He heard himself asking slowly, turning the invitation in his hands.
“Me? Mostly I just people-watch.” Entrapta explained. Then lifted her mask to smile at him. “Princess Prom is the best social experiment on Etheria! So many people all shoved into one room together. Competing motivations and desires, everyone’s the same rank and royal status, but social hierarchies form, relationships are formed or destroyed, it’s very exciting!”
It sounded like an average political affair to Hordak. Not unlike some of the state dinners or court hunts Horde Prime hosted back when Hordak was in favor as top general at the Emperor’s right hand. But that wasn’t the part that he focused on, all Hordak heard was that nobody interacted with Entrapta. Even before she took up residence in the Fright Zone.
For some reason, that made the dark Lord’s hackles rise. How dare they snub so brilliant and clearly superior a creature as Entrapta! This would not stand!
According to the invitation in his hands, Entrapta was allowed a plus-one. She could bring one guest of her choice. His thin lips curled into a smile. “Imagine how much more exciting the experience would be if you were to arrive with the Lord of the Horde as your companion.”
Her eyes lit up, excited. She did actually want to go, and his offer to go with her made her happy. Hordak felt an off warm fuzzy feeling in his chest when she smiled and he feared his implants, or perhaps the new exo-suit might be malfunctioning.
“Really? You’d come with me?” She said through a smile. “I’ve never had a date to Prom before! One year I tried bringing one of my robots, but they made me check him at the door. Apparently, robots and non-sentient constructs count as ‘weapons and accessories’, not guests.”
“They cannot make you leave me at the entrance.” Hordak proclaimed. “I will not allow it!”
She was smiling so wide now. She was so happy. But then Entrapta’s smile faultered, her mile-a-minute mind reminding her that they had other priorities. “But what about the portal? If we go to Princess Prom, we’ll lose a whole day of work.”
“An acceptable delay.” He assured her. “When Horde Prime comes through the portal to collect me, he shall see the state of things here. He shall see that I am… delayed in my conquest. Since the militaristic approach has not worked, diplomacy must become a viable option. Everything must be perfect when we open the portal. I cannot go home until things are perfect.”
The look on the Princesses’ faces alone made the break from the portal project and the trip from the Fright Zone worth it.
Hordak did not like Plumeria from the first moment he set foot within its borders. It was early evening by the time they arrived at Princess Prom. The event was held outside. With delicate tiny fairy-lights strung between the trees, tables draped in natural linen with sage burlap table runners, the music was lutes and harps playing a gentle –bland- melody, and all the offered food was not only vegetarian but vegan as well.
As per custom, Entrapta and her plus one approached where Perfuma sat under her Heart Blossom tree, to give the traditional greeting to their Honorable Hostess.
Hordak gave a measured bow of the appropriate depth and held it for the appropriate count of seconds. He had been a general on the Imperial cabinet, he studied the rules of etiquette for this event the same way as he would any pertinent intel prior to a military strike. When he raised his head, it took every ounce of carefully drilled military discipline not to smirk at the blond tree-hugger Princess.
Brown eyes wide with shock, freckles colored red emotions she was trying hard to conceal. As Hostess of this event, she had to maintain composure at all times and not offend or alienate her guests just as much as her guests could not offend or alienate her. “Uh- I-“ She cleared her throat. “I welcome you under the Ancient Rules of Hospitality. Leave conflict at the door and please enjoy the Ball.”
She chewed on her bottom lip nervously. Hordak wanted to wait there a moment longer just to make the Princess more uncomfortable.
“Thanks!” Entrapta wrapped tendril of hair around Hordak and pulled him away from Perfuma, almost pulling him off her feet as she did. “I can’t wait to compare the data of this year’s Social Experiment to last year’s!”
She pulled Hordak over to the buffet table. A long spread of cucumber and non-dairy cream cheese sandwiches, radish rosettes, avocado toast, stuffed mushrooms, spinach puffs, and a boring vegetable tray with a dip. There was absolutely nothing on the table Hordak could eat –Horde Clones being carnivores by nature.
But Entrapta filled a side pouch of her overalls with spinach puffs and tiny sandwiches. All the while talking into her recorder. “Tensions are already high and we’ve only just arrived.” She narrated. “Perfuma was visibly upset by my choice of guest, but under the Ancient Rules of Hospitality couldn’t turn us away. Results to follow.”
She switched off the recorder and beamed up at Hordak.
He couldn’t help smiling back at her.
The recorder was slipped back into another pocket of her overalls. “Thank you for coming with me. This is… I’m so used to coming to these things alone, and I just-“
“I can’t believe you!”
The angry shout drew both their attention.
Glimmer, Princess of Bright Moon stood in a ball gown, flanked by former-Force Captain Adora, and the Rebel Archer Bow –similarly dressed in formal wear. The Princess’ shoulders were hunched, her eyes hard, teeth bared as if she were readying for a fight. Glimmer fumed at them. “How could you bring him as your plus one!? After everything he’s done!”
The recorder was back in Entrapta’s hand as Hordak just stood there, unsure as to what he should do. His base instinct as a Horde warrior was to dispatch the hostile element with extreme prejudice. She was very clearly threatening his… companion. But the calculating general part of his brain had to hold him back, remembering that conflict within the ball was expressly forbidden. Besides, he was here for Entrapta and Entrapta did not seem to feel particularly threatened.
“Hostilities rise as old grudges bubble to the surface.” She narrated into her recorder. “More than just Perfuma are upset by my Guest’s presence.”
“Do you even care?” Glimmer demanded.
Entrapta tapped her chin, looking up in thought. “Well… you guys didn’t seem to care all that much when you left me in the Fright Zone, so…”
Glimmer could only growl.
Adora stepped forward. “We didn’t mean to abandon you!” She insisted. “We thought you were dead!”
“Based on what evidence?” The tone Entrapta used when she demanded that was almost regal. Hordak knew she was a Princess and ruler of her own Queendom of Dryl, but that was the first time he’d ever actually seen her act or sound like a Queen.
“We saw you die!” Adora insisted.
“But I didn’t die.” Entrapta reminded her. “So what did you see?”
“Well, the blast door slammed shut behind us before you could get out, then it was purged and- we just-“
“So, you didn’t see anything.” Entrapta crossed her arms over her chest with the conclusion. “You just assumed I was dead and wrote me off.”
“That’s not-“
But they were cut off again when the crowd breathed a collective gasp. The latest guests to arrive and pay their respects to Perfuma as the Honorable Hostess were two people they did not expect to attend either. Hordak thought they were dead. Adora thought she’d never see them outside of the Crimson Wastes again.
Scorpia, with Catra at her side, were just straightening from their ceremonial bows to Perfuma.
Hordak had to suppress a snort of irony. “This event is just full of reunions.”
“Catra!” Entrapta went sprinting over to her friend. “You’re alive!”
Before the others were even aware of it, Glimmer, Bow, and Adora were left alone with Hordak. The trio stared up at the Lord of the Horde. He was tall, but somehow seemed less imposing hallowed by the fairy lights of Plumeria’s trees.
There was a pregnant pause in which no one said anything.
The Bow, ever the arbiter of peace, gave an awkward little chuckle. He lifted the veggie tray off the table. “Carrot stick?” He offered to Hordak.
The Lord of the Horde just brushed past him to rejoin Entrapta as she caught up with her other friends.
“Yeah…” Scorpia was saying. “Things were just going so great for us in the Crimson Wastes that Catra and I just decided to stay. She’s practically Warlord of the Wastes now. And I’m her Princess. We’ve ever got a kid!”
“Really?” Entrapta’s eyes lit up upon hearing that her friends were no only alive, but also happy, healthy, and thriving.
“Yeah!” Scorpia reached into her clutch purse and pulled out a pocket holo-projector. She pulled up the image of a tiny baby, with fuzzy pointed cat ears and a scorpion tail. “She’s only six weeks old, it’s hard being apart from her. That’s why we’re late, and we’re gonna leave early too. I just wanna hold her all the time! Ya know.”
Catra caught someone else approaching their group and turned to face them, a scathing smirk pulling at her lips. “Hey, Adora.”
The former-Force Captain stopped short. “Catra.”
There was another pregnant pause in which nobody said anything. Adora’s eyes flicked to the picture Scorpia was holding. Of a new born infant, balled thus far, with Catra’s fuzzy brown ears, and Scorpia’s red poison tail. They did not have pincers, but the fingers of the hands were fused together to give the appearance of pincer claws. Scorpia and Catra’s daughter.
Adora’s eyes flicked back to Catra. “I’m glad you finally found happiness.” She said. Then ran back to Bow and Glimmer.
The recorder was back in Entrapta’s hair. “Ooh… feelings are hurt as old friends move on from past rejection.”
“Still stealing food and spying on people.” Catra observed, smiling at Entrapta. “Nice to see somethings never change.”
“Oh, but something has changed!” Announced the eccentric scientist. She wrapped one tendril of hair around Hordak’s arm and pulled him closer to her. “I have a date!”
Catra looked up at him. Just as tall as he always was, but somehow less intimidating in the soft lighting with the gentle sound of lutes and harps wafting around them. “Lord Hordak.”
“Force Captain Catra.” He nodded back, wondering if he should bring up the fact that she and Scorpia basically deserted the Horde and remind her that they had penalties for desertion.
“It’s ‘Warlord Catra’ now, actually.” She corrected him. “I’m ruler of the Crimson Wastes.”
“Hey! Maybe the Crimson Wastes could make a treaty with the Horde!” Scorpia suggested happily.
Hordak paused before shooting the idea down outright. He did tell Entrapta before coming here that the military approach hadn’t worked. That he needed to try diplomacy instead. The Crimson Waste was as good a place as any to start. He could not face Horde Prime as a failure. Everythign had to be perfect when they opened the portal.
He could not go home until it was perfect.
The day after Princess Prom they both rested for the majority of the day. The only time spent in the lab was when Entrapta had to recalibrate Hordak’s exo-suit. All the pollen in the air in Plumeria hadn’t done any favors for its filtration systems.
Aside from that, the majority of the day was spent in restful relaxation.
“Are you sure you don’t mind that we didn’t work on the portal at all today?” Entrapta asked when a soldier brought their dinners to the throne room.
Hordak waited until the soldier was once again out of the room before answering. “It is fine. You are of no use to me if you are exhausted from yesterday’s frivolities. We shall return to our work tomorrow. The portal must be perfect.” He reminded her. “Otherwise I cannot return home.”
Imp fluttered down rom the back of the throne to sit on Hordak’s thigh. Opening his mouth, the little deamon threw the dark Lord’s last word back at him. ‘Home, home, home.’
“We should move it outside.” Hordak suggested.
“Huh?” Entrapta blinked at him. She was about to switch it on so he could send his signal though. “Why?”
“When Prime opens it from his side, he will send his army through.” Hordak reminded her. “I cannot have dreadnaughts and capital ships materializing in my lab. The portal needs to be moved outside.”
Hard to argue with that logic. After sending the initial signal, whoever was on the other side would seek out their portal as a sort of ‘receiver’ to connect to the other side. The portal could not be inside the central Horde command building when things started coming through it. “Okay.”
They spent the entire rest of the day moving the delicate equipment outside, enlisting Lonnie, Kyle, and Rogelio to help them.
By the time it was done, everyone was exhausted and Hordak’s exo-suit needed to be tuned again. They did not switch the portal on and send the signal through. The soldiers were dismissed for the night and Hordak retired to his Sanctum to be attended to by Entrapta.
But that was okay. Hordak was not frustrated. Taking their time and doing things right just means that, when they finally did switch it on, it would be perfect. Hordak could not go home until it was perfect.
They didn’t work on the portal the following day either, because the party from the Crimson Wastes arrived to negotiate their treaty with the Horde.
Hordak spent the entire day sequestered in lengthy meetings about weapons exchange, technology sharing, intel on She-Ra and the First Ones, what benefits the Horde got out of the arrangement, what benefits Catra expected out of the arrangement.
Hordak didn’t even get to see Entrapta all day, never mind work on the portal with her.
But the next day… the next day found them both outside, at its new location.
Entrapta double checked the connections to the power source, while Hordak ran one final diagnostic of his transmitter and message.
He looked up at Entrapta, focused on her task. Eyes bright with enjoyment of her craft. Hair undulating with her motion, deftly moving at their detailed work.
He could not take Entrapta with him when he returned to the Horde –to the real Horde, the Empire. She wouldn’t have a place there. They had their own scientists. They had no use for small alien tech-gremlins with no concept of fear or personal preservation. Entrapta would not last a week in Horde Prime’s court.
“Wait!” He found himself barking at her.
“Huh?” She looked up at him, confused. “Something wrong on the diagnostics?”
Hordak froze, unable to put these strange alien feeling he was having into words. “I can’t-“ He faltered. The Horde did not teach vocabulary to describe these symptoms he was feeling. “The color. The casing.” He said instead. “The portal looks cobbled together out of garbage!” Because it was cobbled together out of spare parts. “The Emperor of the Known Universe cannot come through this! It must be prefect. I cannot go home until it is perfect.”
The next day, Entrapta cornered Hordak in his private chambers, before he even rose out of bed.
“Morning!” She hung half out of an air vent above him, shocking him awake.
“Entrapta!” Hordak pulled the blankets up around his chin to cover himself. He wasn’t sure what rules of modesty she was used to on this backwater mud ball of a planet. But where he was from, males and females did not just drop in on each other in their bed clothes! (Or lack of clothes.)
Swinging on her hair, Entrapta dropped down from the vent to land on the foot of his bed. “I painted the casing on the portal.” She informed him. “It’s red. Red and chrome. It should be fine for your Emperor. We moved it outside so the capital ships don’t destroy your base. You’ve already got your signal coded and ready to go.”
He blinked at her. “Your efforts have gone above and beyond that of a-“
“So, it’s perfect.” She cut him off. “You can go home any time.”
It was perfect. He could go home.
Hordak stared at her. Fuchsia eyes bright with anticipation. Hair frizzed out with excitement. Perching on the foot of his bed on her toes. Usually Hordak abhorred shoes on his bed. But, when it was Entrapta… he seemed not to mind so much. It seemed… right, somehow. Her. Here. In his most private chambers, where he slept, and took off his exo-suit, and allowed himself to be most vulnerable.
He had already allowed himself to be vulnerable around her before. It was that very vulnerability that prompted her to build him the exo-suit. It was a level of safety he could never and would never find in the Horde. Being vulnerable around her even made him stronger.
In a sparkling moment of horrifying clarity, he realized, all this time he spent saying he could not go ‘home’, he was no longer thinking of the Empire as ‘home’.
“What if…” He began, doubting himself. But she would just hound him until he finished his thought. So Hordak pressed on. “What if I decided I was already home?”
Home was wherever Entrapta was.
It was perfect.

The Playtesting Reformation
You may already know about Level 99 Games Open Playtesting Program, and perhaps you’re even a member already! If not, you can go to the Playtesting Portal and sign up right away!
In the past, we’ve had a tough time with our game testing. In this article, I’m going to talk about the difficulties that we’ve had, what changes we’re making to address them, and why we chose the solutions that we did.
These changes are ultimately intended to help us get our games out on time and with higher quality. With more focused testing, we’re going to be able to deliver better games to you, and to deliver a better experience to testers as well.
1. It Starts in Design
One of the biggest problems that we’ve seen in testing is a lack of guidance from our Design teams.
In recent sets of Exceed, we didn’t convey the full intent behind each fighter and the reason we chose specific mechanics for specific characters. This led to a sense of disconnect between balance and mechanics. If balance is the ultimate goal, with no other fixed points, then it’s OK to drastically change the fundamentals of fighters in order to achieve that goal.
This is the worst, because it can lead us to testing which actually brings the game further from completion than when testing began, since now the design teams have to re-assess the fun-factor of the new mechanics.
The guilt here is really on the design team though. If we had gone into development with clear goals and fixed points and reasons for our decisions, these things wouldn’t have been a problem. Instead, many of the important design decisions were essentially punted to development. Saying “balance will figure out the details” was the worst mistake we’ve ever made in design. It’s the job of design to figure out ‘what’ and ‘why’. Development is only responsible for ‘how’ to make that vision work.
So what are we going to do? We have a two-step approach to this problem. Both parts occur during the design phase for our games.
Firstly, the most important rule is design with intent. Our design teams aren’t just out to make something, they also need to understand why they’re making it and what it’s going to accomplish. There are many design decisions that are made to achieve specific goals. The design team must record these decisions and the goals that led to them, and pass these notes to our testers in a Playtester’s Guide. This guide will detail what the goals for testing are, and in the case of a competitive game, the target gameplay and feeling for each faction or side that’s going into balance.
The second part is to design with understanding. Because the skills of game design and game mastery are very different, design teams can easily become disconnected with the competitive reality of their decisions. Just because an archetype seems great conceptually doesn’t mean that it’s healthy for the game. It takes developers and balancers to reveal this. In order to bring this understanding to the design team, we will be working with our playtesters and developers, to bring them onto the design team early and have their voices heard in the creation of gameplay concepts.
2. What are We Testing For, Anyway?
Metrics are one of the most important and frustrating parts of game development. How do you really know when something is “done”? What do terms like “done” and “balanced” even mean? Is it balanced if a matchup is 4-6? What if it’s 45-55? What about 495-505? As you can see, there’s really no end to it. Even these numbers are suspect, if the skill level of the players is differential. Not all playtesters are going to be at the pro-player level. Nor should they be.
What we’re recording during playtest sessions, and by extension, what we are looking for during these sessions, needs to be far more clear. “Play some games and let us know when you think it’s good enough” just isn’t going to cut it when you’re trying to deliver multiple, highly-polished, competitively-balanced games per year. We have to have a standard for what “good enough” is, so that we can ship games to you with consistent quality and on a consistent schedule.
We’ve identified four metrics for playtesting that we look at to determine if a character is “complete”. By following these four points, we will have a complete definition of Completion in playtesting. The exact requirements and exact numbers change for each game. With Exceed, we require more plays for balance. With Millennium Blades, things are fairly balanced across the board.
Fun - "Content is played and enjoyed.”
Completion: X players have played and enjoyed the content.
Fun is a difficult thing to test, and means a lot of things to a lot of people. The important thing here is that we have a bottom limit of players who will stamp “Fun” on the content. We don’t need to please everyone with every piece of content, but if a certain number (not a certain percentage) of testers enjoy the content, we can be confident it will find an audience in the real world. The reason to avoid a percentage here is that playtesters are largely a self-selected pool, and tastes may become homogenous in the group. In order to give each voice equal weight and better reflect the demographics of the real world, we use a fixed number rather than a percentage of our playtest pool.
Balance - "Content is mathematically & heuristically balanced."
Completion: X experienced players have played the current version of the content and found no need for further updates.
For Balance, we specifically look for the word of experienced players. As with fun, player skill levels and experience levels will vary, and balance will need to be determined carefully. Where possible, mathematical and mechanical balance comes first. After this, the heuristic (or “learned”) balance of actual players is applied. This “gut check” is intended as a final step to balancing the system, not as the primary driver of balance. Like fun, we look for a certain number of sign-offs from experienced players, rather than a percentage consensus. Competitive game balance is a divisive subject, after all.
Function - "Designer intent is expressed in the content."
Completion: X new players have played content correctly & without confusion.
The Function portion of our assessment is what we would more colloquially term as “Blind Testing”. It’s there to guarantee that Designer Intent (that is, the way the game is played) is clearly transferred to new players by the game’s rules and the text on the cards. In this pass, we seek to eliminate any hidden or obscure interactions with the game contents. If a card doesn’t reveal its true value or correct playstyle immediately, then it needs to be reworked in order to improve its functionality.
We want players to be making strategic decisions, after all, not to be exploiting hidden interactions. This streamlining of function different than Depth. Depth of play which comes from the interaction of strategic decisions. It is our belief that making strategic play clearer and more accessible leads to an increase in total game depth, since more strategies can be accessed more easily by players.
Clarity - "Content is unambiguous and templated."
Completion: X experienced players have proofread and approved the content.
To pass the muster for Clarity, the interactions of the component are clear and unambiguous. This covers wording, symbols, templating, and consistent use of language. A templating guide is provided to ensure that the game’s text is clear and clean. As a rule, text is minimized in favor of symbols, diagrams, and (where appropriate) keywords. Developers should suggest these updates where appropriate.
3. Let’s Get Together
One reason that playtesting has taken us so long in the past is the absence of regular playtesting events. We’ve got a great community on Discord, but for many months, our policy was merely to sign in and play whatever you felt like, whenever you felt like. Unless the community is in the thousands, it’s difficult to find someone in your own time zone, interested in your game, with a similar schedule to play.
Without a massive community to provide always-on matchmaking, it was often difficult to find an opponent to test your game with, particularly when there are 4 or 5 different games available in the testing pool, and a player is often looking for just one or another.
And even when you did find someone, there wasn’t always a staff member or authority on hand to answer questions about the game, or to help new testers with recording their results. This led to a huge amount of wasted time and potential in our playtesting community.
We began our efforts to remedy this early this year. Now, weekly events are announced to playtesters via email every Sunday night. Playtesters can sign on to those specific events and appear online to test with us. Furthermore, these tests are guided by a playtest lead, who is ready to answer questions and to take notes, and to ensure that players are properly credited for their participation to receive playtesting rewards.
4. Sprints, not Relays
While the events have been successful, they haven’t been perfect. We’ve been running our events with the idea of doing multiple games in parallel, getting in a full day of testing each week for each of three different games. Working parallel like this has actually slowed us down significantly though. Switching between tasks leads to lower quality testing. To explain, playing a game like BattleCON for 3 days straight it going to yield better testing on days 2 and 3, versus playing one day per week for 3 weeks.
In our updated testing schedule, we will be running sprints of game testing–a three day tournament event, or just continuous days of focused testing, then taking a break for a few days to do revisions, then pushing forward with the next testing event. Our goal in this is to get higher-quality results from intensive tests, then turn them around faster, to clear out a new competitive season of Exceed or a new batch of BattleCON Fighters in 6 weeks instead of 6 months.
5. Smaller Targets & Better Aim
Many of our competitive games have a lot of different factions, characters, or starting positions that need to be balanced. In these cases, it’s important to make sure that we’re testing each thing evenly and thoroughly. However, in a pool with 9 Millennium Blades characters or 20 Exceed Fighters, it can be hard to know what’s been tested and what remains to test. Even if the dev team knows (which they often haven’t), the playtesters certainly don’t know. And without directed playtesting, players tend to play the factions that interest them the most, leading to an uneven distribution of testing.
In upcoming projects, we will be breaking up the playtesting pool into phases. Testing a small batch of only 2 or 3 things exclusively until they’re complete. We’re also planning to test them against fixed targets. In the case of Exceed, this means battling everyone against Ryu and a handful of other fixed points. In Millennium Blades, this means looking at absolute point totals with different characters across fixed store card pools, in order to achieve consistency and make sure every store card gets seen.
By creating more narrow targets for our individual events, we can achieve greater consistency in testing the content of our games.
6. Better Rewards
The rewards for playtesting a game with us have always been good, but never really well-structured. We’ve gotten a bit better about delivering these rewards on time, and recording plays correctly, but there’s still a lot to be done to improve this.
In the coming months, we’re improving our organized play rewards with more cards, better presentation, and an eye towards supporting collectors who want to have something really unique in their games. Since these are the main reward we give out to playtesters, we’re building these improvements with the mindset that they will serve as special rewards for playtesters as well.
We look forward to giving out more of these rewards in the coming months to the friends who help us make these great games!

Top Tips For Storing Vegetables Without a Root Cellar
You’re pulling in your garden harvest…it’s covering every surface of your home…and now you’re left with the familiar problem of “what are you supposed to do with all of this fresh produce?”.
Most of us have not been blessed with a traditional root cellar in our home. If you happen to be someone with a root cellar, I would just like to say that I am exceedingly jealous.
Fortunately, for the rest of us without a root cellar, I’ve got some good news: there are still plenty of ways to store our crops for later.
Christian and I have been contemplating putting in a root cellar for a while now. We have been seeing more of a need for one as our food growth continues to increase. Back in the beginning, I didn’t think a root cellar was necessary; I was still trying to figure out how to grow vegetables and we had smaller quantities to deal with.
Now we are in our homesteading groove (most of the time), but one of the big issues we continue to have as our growing capacity expands is storage.
An example is our potato storage. We have been Digging Up and Storing Potatoes for Winter for years now. In recent years, it has been huge amounts and we have had to come up with a plan to store them without your typical root cellar. Watch how I have managed to store over 200 lbs of potatoes without a root cellar.
youtube
In the past, we have used our basement for storage, but it hasn’t always worked the way we would have liked. Now, we have started exploring our options; we even had a concrete guy come over recently and talk to us about the logistics of pouring a concrete root cellar.
Since there have been a ton of questions from everyone on social media recently asking me “what do I do with all of this food?”, I thought that I would gather up a bunch of info in this post. Hopefully it helps you get your ideas flowing and helps you take that first step towards storing food for later. For a more detailed in-depth look at storing vegetables without a root cellar, you can also take a look at these 13 Alternatives to a Root Cellar.
By the way, if you prefer listening to podcasts over reading info, I recently made a podcast episode on storing vegetables without a root cellar here:
Learn More About Storing Your Vegetables Without a Root Cellar
I have been reading books recently in order to do some root cellar research. So I thought that I would give you a book recommendation (and please know that I am really picky about the books I buy and recommend).
I think that this book that I recently purchased is a good investment and I am so glad I bought it. It is called Root Cellaring: Natural Cold Storage of Fruits and Vegetables, by Mike and Nancy Bubel. This is a really good book with a very common-sense title, diagrams, charts, and also discusses about how to build a root cellar. It also talks about how to create makeshift root cellar options and it gives a lot of information on storing vegetables without a root cellar.
The book explains how vegetables will handle different types of storage and what their requirements are. It’s really good, so grab a copy and start learning about root cellaring. In this post, I would like to share a few things that I have learned from the book but also some things that I have learned through trial and error over the years.
How to Store Vegetables Without A Root Cellar
The big thing you need to remember if you are storing vegetables is that not all vegetables are great options for a root cellar or long-term storage. Things like cucumbers, tomatoes, or green beans are what you focus on either freezing, fermenting, or canning.
Root crops like potatoes, beets, parsnips, and carrots are fantastic for root cellars or cold storage. You can grow a lot of those things and keep them for many months if you play your cards right.
Vegetables That Thrive in Root Cellar Storage Include:
Carrots
Beets
Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes
Parsnips
Onions
Garlic
Winter Squash
Pumpkins
Cabbages
Note: Keep in mind that each type of vegetable has its own set of instructions for pre-storage preparation and for how best to store them long-term.
Creating a Root Cellar Environment
When trying to create a root cellar environment or mimic a root cellar, it needs to be cold, dark, and humid. A lot of these vegetables have specifics about how they should be stored, but the thing to remember as a beginner is: the colder the better. However, you don’t want things to get so cold they freeze. If things freeze and then thaw out, they tend to get mushy; you want your temperature to be right above 32 degrees Fahrenheit with some humidity if possible.
I have learned that when vegetables are pulled from the garden, they are still alive for a time. As they age, they start to lose some of their moisture. Having a humid environment slows that moisture loss and helps keep them fresher longer. Ideally, 32ish plus degrees Fahrenheit with some humidity and darkness is ideal, however, you can get away with something that isn’t exactly that.
Creating A Root Cellar Environment for Potato and Onion Storage:
One thing to remember when storing vegetables like onions or especially potatoes they need to have some air circulation. You don’t want to take your potatoes stick them in a rubber-made plastic box with the lid clamped down and leave it. Some of your vegetables will rot and mold quickly without the proper air exchange.
What I do for storing my potatoes is putting them in cardboard boxes, place a layer of newspaper between each row of potatoes and then completely close the cardboard box. The box then gets put in a part of our basement that is super dark. One issue with things like potatoes is that if they get exposed to light, they begin to sprout and honestly, I still have sprouting potatoes even when I try to keep it as dark as possible. I don’t think our basement is quite as cold as I would like it to be but even though it’s moderately cool it still works.
This is also a good place to hang onion braids, you don’t have to braid your onions but it’s kind of a fun thing and it allows air circulation. If you would like to braid your onions to hang for storage, I would love to help you learn How to Braid Your Onions.
Creating A Root Cellar Environment for Carrot Storage:
Due to the many carrot disasters I have had in the past when I have tried to store carrots, I don’t feel qualified to give advice on carrot storage in this capacity. There are a lot of people on the Internet that say you can store your carrots in sawdust or boxes of sand, and you sprinkle them with some water, and they’ll be good.
I attempted storing carrots in the box with sand method and it was a horrible failure. It was so gross that Christian was completely traumatized and will no longer allow me to try to store carrots in any kind of box.
This method is also very heavy; you will need a dolly to move the boxes around. My carrots turned out disgusting: they were rotted carrot mush, thought it is possible that I did something wrong. I cannot personally recommend the carrots in the sand method because it did not work for me.
So I currently simply store my carrots in the fridge, which is one way of storing vegetables without a Root Cellar.
If your storage is a little bit warmer, not quite as humid, or simply less than perfect, there are still things you can do to make it work. Your situation might not work for very long storage or work as well, but any kind of storage is better than just letting everything rot. I’ve never had a root cellar, so I have always just kind of had to make it work as best that I can, and you can do that too.
3 Ways to Store Your Vegetables Without a Root Cellar
Your root crops can be from your home garden, bought at the farmers market, or extra produce that a friend gave you. No matter where they are from, here are three ways you can store them even if you don’t have an actual root cellar.
Tip #1: Leave Your Crops Planted in the Garden (Depending on Your Climate)
This first option may work if you don’t live in a place like Wyoming. If you live in a more normal climate, then you can leave certain crops in the garden until you actually need them. Carrots and parsnips are great candidates for this type of storage.
As some root vegetables mature, their tops stick up out of the ground, and if you are leaving them in the garden, then you will want to make sure that they are completely covered. If any part of the skin is exposed and it freezes, then it’s not going to be good anymore. You will want to cover your vegetables with a HEAVY layer of mulch (approx. 18 inches thick is a good idea if you can make that work) in this situation.
You can cover your vegetables using straw, grass clippings, or, some people cover their rows with a tarp. If we were to use a tarp, we would have to anchor it down with concrete blocks because of the wind we get in the winter. If you don’t have as much wind or you do not get as much snow as Wyoming does, you can scrape away the straw mulch or move your tarp to harvest as needed.
I do use this method to a certain extent: I will leave my carrots in the ground until October or November but beyond that, it doesn’t work for me. The ground here freezes solid and then it’s impossible to get the carrots out. Another problem that happens is snowdrifts end up right on top of the carrot bed and then I would be left digging through 3-foot snow drifts to get to the carrots.
This may not work for me and my climate, but folks in a little bit more temperate climate have been storing root crops like this with great results. If this first storage trick is something that interests you, do a little research, talk to other gardeners in your area (or your local extension office), and find some information that will let you know if this is something that will work for your harvest.
We store food in our basement because we do not have a root cellar. It works pretty well!
Tip #2 Use an Unheated Room to Store Your Vegetables
The second tip is to use an unheated room in your house, garage, or another building. When I talk to other homesteaders, this is the one option that everyone uses the most. This method of storage is one that I have done for many years, we have a basement that is not completely unheated but cooler than the rest of the house. There is an old unfinished part of our basement where I have stored my potatoes, carrots, and onions in the past.
If you have an old farmhouse-type house with a room that is not very well heated and super drafty, this might be a great room to store crops. I have also heard of people using an attic or crawl space to store their food (although one thing about the crawl space that would be worrisome is rodents and pests).
An alternative to a basement might be a garage or outbuilding that is unheated but also is not going to freeze. If you’re going to use a building like this, perhaps you can use extra insulation around your storage container to make sure that it’s protected. It really is about being creative and finding ways to make your situation work.
In your unheated room, if you can afford it, you can also build an actual cold storage room; there are some pretty cool tutorials out there where people will frame off a corner of their unheated basements and make it into an actual root cellar.
We looked at this idea quite a bit and the reason we didn’t use this method is that we could not see a way to add a vent to our basement. Having a vent to the outside that provides air circulation is a really important part of a root cellar.
As a vegetable ripens, it gives off ethylene gas, and ethylene gas causes the other vegetables around to spoil more quickly. This gas is one of the reasons why you will see vents in an old root cellar. If we could have figured out a way to vent our basement and build a cold room, I absolutely would have done this.
This idea of adding a root cellar or cold storage room is just another option to consider; first I would recommend doing a search on building a cold storage room. If this is something that you feel is a possibility, I would consider it because it would be really cool to build from what you already have.
Tip #3 Store Root Vegetables in an Old Refrigerator
You may not have room in your regular house fridge, but it might be a wise investment to find an old fridge on Craigslist or Facebook. This fridge doesn’t have to be pretty; you can keep it in your garage, shop, or the backroom of your house.
As long as it’s not getting too cold and/or freezing the vegetables, it will be a great place to store some of your vegetables like carrots and beets. You can also put a little pan of water in there to help with the humidity. If it works well enough, you can even put your cabbage in there and your cabbage will store quite a while if you’re not wanting to make sauerkraut. An old fridge is a great option for root crop storage, and a bonus is that you can store your ferments in there as well.
If we ever build a root cellar, my goal is to be able to put my potatoes, carrots, and onions down there in baskets. There will also be shelves to store jars of sauerkraut and other fermented foods. Since I don’t have that yet, what I’ve always done with sauerkraut in the past is just store it in our shop refrigerator and it works well.
Get Creative with Your Root Cellar Storage
More ideas are coming out, such as burying things in the ground, like burying a trash can, or an old chest freezer in the ground and storing food inside. We have not tried this because I think it would have to be buried fairly deep to not freeze here in Wyoming.
In a milder climate, this could work, though I would look at a couple of different tutorials or instructions before starting to dig and bury trash cans in your backyard. I have seen ideas where people stack hay bales around a hole then put a window on top. This creates a greenhouse effect on the top and you would just need to make sure it didn’t freeze.
If you are looking for ideas there are a lot of creative ways people have been storing vegetables without a root cellar out there, you can learn more about them by reading 13 Root Cellar Alternatives. When deciding on a method, just make sure you’re following one that has good reviews and looks like it will work. It will still take some research on your part to figure out which type of cold storage you can do in your yard and climate.
Looking For Different Food Storage Options?
I hope this post helped you get your creative juices moving. If you aren’t sure if any of these cold food storage ideas will work for you, I suggest that you start thinking outside the box, because there are many ways to squirrel away that food for later besides cold storage.

Asynchronous Design Critique: Getting Feedback
“Any comment?” is probably one of the worst ways to ask for feedback. It’s vague and open ended, and it doesn’t provide any indication of what we’re looking for. Getting good feedback starts earlier than we might expect: it starts with the request.
It might seem counterintuitive to start the process of receiving feedback with a question, but that makes sense if we realize that getting feedback can be thought of as a form of design research. In the same way that we wouldn’t do any research without the right questions to get the insights that we need, the best way to ask for feedback is also to craft sharp questions.
Design critique is not a one-shot process. Sure, any good feedback workflow continues until the project is finished, but this is particularly true for design because design work continues iteration after iteration, from a high level to the finest details. Each level needs its own set of questions.
And finally, as with any good research, we need to review what we got back, get to the core of its insights, and take action. Question, iteration, and review. Let’s look at each of those.
The question
Being open to feedback is essential, but we need to be precise about what we’re looking for. Just saying “Any comment?”, “What do you think?”, or “I’d love to get your opinion” at the end of a presentation—whether it’s in person, over video, or through a written post—is likely to get a number of varied opinions or, even worse, get everyone to follow the direction of the first person who speaks up. And then... we get frustrated because vague questions like those can turn a high-level flows review into people instead commenting on the borders of buttons. Which might be a hearty topic, so it might be hard at that point to redirect the team to the subject that you had wanted to focus on.
But how do we get into this situation? It’s a mix of factors. One is that we don’t usually consider asking as a part of the feedback process. Another is how natural it is to just leave the question implied, expecting the others to be on the same page. Another is that in nonprofessional discussions, there’s often no need to be that precise. In short, we tend to underestimate the importance of the questions, so we don’t work on improving them.
The act of asking good questions guides and focuses the critique. It’s also a form of consent: it makes it clear that you’re open to comments and what kind of comments you’d like to get. It puts people in the right mental state, especially in situations when they weren’t expecting to give feedback.
There isn’t a single best way to ask for feedback. It just needs to be specific, and specificity can take many shapes. A model for design critique that I’ve found particularly useful in my coaching is the one of stage versus depth.
Tumblr media
“Stage” refers to each of the steps of the process—in our case, the design process. In progressing from user research to the final design, the kind of feedback evolves. But within a single step, one might still review whether some assumptions are correct and whether there’s been a proper translation of the amassed feedback into updated designs as the project has evolved. A starting point for potential questions could derive from the layers of user experience. What do you want to know: Project objectives? User needs? Functionality? Content? Interaction design? Information architecture? UI design? Navigation design? Visual design? Branding?
Here’re a few example questions that are precise and to the point that refer to different layers:
Functionality: Is automating account creation desirable?
Interaction design: Take a look through the updated flow and let me know whether you see any steps or error states that I might’ve missed.
Information architecture: We have two competing bits of information on this page. Is the structure effective in communicating them both?
UI design: What are your thoughts on the error counter at the top of the page that makes sure that you see the next error, even if the error is out of the viewport?
Navigation design: From research, we identified these second-level navigation items, but once you’re on the page, the list feels too long and hard to navigate. Are there any suggestions to address this?
Visual design: Are the sticky notifications in the bottom-right corner visible enough?
The other axis of specificity is about how deep you’d like to go on what’s being presented. For example, we might have introduced a new end-to-end flow, but there was a specific view that you found particularly challenging and you’d like a detailed review of that. This can be especially useful from one iteration to the next where it’s important to highlight the parts that have changed.
There are other things that we can consider when we want to achieve more specific—and more effective—questions.
A simple trick is to remove generic qualifiers from your questions like “good,” “well,” “nice,” “bad,” “okay,” and “cool.” For example, asking, “When the block opens and the buttons appear, is this interaction good?” might look specific, but you can spot the “good” qualifier, and convert it to an even better question: “When the block opens and the buttons appear, is it clear what the next action is?”
Sometimes we actually do want broad feedback. That’s rare, but it can happen. In that sense, you might still make it explicit that you’re looking for a wide range of opinions, whether at a high level or with details. Or maybe just say, “At first glance, what do you think?” so that it’s clear that what you’re asking is open ended but focused on someone’s impression after their first five seconds of looking at it.
Sometimes the project is particularly expansive, and some areas may have already been explored in detail. In these situations, it might be useful to explicitly say that some parts are already locked in and aren’t open to feedback. It’s not something that I’d recommend in general, but I’ve found it useful to avoid falling again into rabbit holes of the sort that might lead to further refinement but aren’t what’s most important right now.
Asking specific questions can completely change the quality of the feedback that you receive. People with less refined critique skills will now be able to offer more actionable feedback, and even expert designers will welcome the clarity and efficiency that comes from focusing only on what’s needed. It can save a lot of time and frustration.
The iteration
Design iterations are probably the most visible part of the design work, and they provide a natural checkpoint for feedback. Yet a lot of design tools with inline commenting tend to show changes as a single fluid stream in the same file, and those types of design tools make conversations disappear once they’re resolved, update shared UI components automatically, and compel designs to always show the latest version—unless these would-be helpful features were to be manually turned off. The implied goal that these design tools seem to have is to arrive at just one final copy with all discussions closed, probably because they inherited patterns from how written documents are collaboratively edited. That’s probably not the best way to approach design critiques, but even if I don’t want to be too prescriptive here: that could work for some teams.
The asynchronous design-critique approach that I find most effective is to create explicit checkpoints for discussion. I’m going to use the term iteration post for this. It refers to a write-up or presentation of the design iteration followed by a discussion thread of some kind. Any platform that can accommodate this structure can use this. By the way, when I refer to a “write-up or presentation,” I’m including video recordings or other media too: as long as it’s asynchronous, it works.
Using iteration posts has many advantages:
It creates a rhythm in the design work so that the designer can review feedback from each iteration and prepare for the next.
It makes decisions visible for future review, and conversations are likewise always available.
It creates a record of how the design changed over time.
Depending on the tool, it might also make it easier to collect feedback and act on it.
These posts of course don’t mean that no other feedback approach should be used, just that iteration posts could be the primary rhythm for a remote design team to use. And other feedback approaches (such as live critique, pair designing, or inline comments) can build from there.
I don’t think there’s a standard format for iteration posts. But there are a few high-level elements that make sense to include as a baseline:
The goal
The design
The list of changes
The questions
Each project is likely to have a goal, and hopefully it’s something that’s already been summarized in a single sentence somewhere else, such as the client brief, the product manager’s outline, or the project owner’s request. So this is something that I’d repeat in every iteration post—literally copy and pasting it. The idea is to provide context and to repeat what’s essential to make each iteration post complete so that there’s no need to find information spread across multiple posts. If I want to know about the latest design, the latest iteration post will have all that I need.
This copy-and-paste part introduces another relevant concept: alignment comes from repetition. So having posts that repeat information is actually very effective toward making sure that everyone is on the same page.
The design is then the actual series of information-architecture outlines, diagrams, flows, maps, wireframes, screens, visuals, and any other kind of design work that’s been done. In short, it’s any design artifact. For the final stages of work, I prefer the term blueprint to emphasize that I’ll be showing full flows instead of individual screens to make it easier to understand the bigger picture.
It can also be useful to label the artifacts with clear titles because that can make it easier to refer to them. Write the post in a way that helps people understand the work. It’s not too different from organizing a good live presentation.
For an efficient discussion, you should also include a bullet list of the changes from the previous iteration to let people focus on what’s new, which can be especially useful for larger pieces of work where keeping track, iteration after iteration, could become a challenge.
And finally, as noted earlier, it’s essential that you include a list of the questions to drive the design critique in the direction you want. Doing this as a numbered list can also help make it easier to refer to each question by its number.
Not all iterations are the same. Earlier iterations don’t need to be as tightly focused—they can be more exploratory and experimental, maybe even breaking some of the design-language guidelines to see what’s possible. Then later, the iterations start settling on a solution and refining it until the design process reaches its end and the feature ships.
I want to highlight that even if these iteration posts are written and conceived as checkpoints, by no means do they need to be exhaustive. A post might be a draft—just a concept to get a conversation going—or it could be a cumulative list of each feature that was added over the course of each iteration until the full picture is done.
Over time, I also started using specific labels for incremental iterations: i1, i2, i3, and so on. This might look like a minor labelling tip, but it can help in multiple ways:
Unique—It’s a clear unique marker. Within each project, one can easily say, “This was discussed in i4,” and everyone knows where they can go to review things.
Unassuming—It works like versions (such as v1, v2, and v3) but in contrast, versions create the impression of something that’s big, exhaustive, and complete. Iterations must be able to be exploratory, incomplete, partial.
Future proof—It resolves the “final” naming problem that you can run into with versions. No more files named “final final complete no-really-its-done.” Within each project, the largest number always represents the latest iteration.
To mark when a design is complete enough to be worked on, even if there might be some bits still in need of attention and in turn more iterations needed, the wording release candidate (RC) could be used to describe it: “with i8, we reached RC” or “i12 is an RC.”
The review
What usually happens during a design critique is an open discussion, with a back and forth between people that can be very productive. This approach is particularly effective during live, synchronous feedback. But when we work asynchronously, it’s more effective to use a different approach: we can shift to a user-research mindset. Written feedback from teammates, stakeholders, or others can be treated as if it were the result of user interviews and surveys, and we can analyze it accordingly.
This shift has some major benefits that make asynchronous feedback particularly effective, especially around these friction points:
It removes the pressure to reply to everyone.
It reduces the frustration from swoop-by comments.
It lessens our personal stake.
The first friction point is feeling a pressure to reply to every single comment. Sometimes we write the iteration post, and we get replies from our team. It’s just a few of them, it’s easy, and it doesn’t feel like a problem. But other times, some solutions might require more in-depth discussions, and the amount of replies can quickly increase, which can create a tension between trying to be a good team player by replying to everyone and doing the next design iteration. This might be especially true if the person who’s replying is a stakeholder or someone directly involved in the project who we feel that we need to listen to. We need to accept that this pressure is absolutely normal, and it’s human nature to try to accommodate people who we care about. Sometimes replying to all comments can be effective, but if we treat a design critique more like user research, we realize that we don’t have to reply to every comment, and in asynchronous spaces, there are alternatives:
One is to let the next iteration speak for itself. When the design evolves and we post a follow-up iteration, that’s the reply. You might tag all the people who were involved in the previous discussion, but even that’s a choice, not a requirement.
Another is to briefly reply to acknowledge each comment, such as “Understood. Thank you,” “Good points—I’ll review,” or “Thanks. I’ll include these in the next iteration.” In some cases, this could also be just a single top-level comment along the lines of “Thanks for all the feedback everyone—the next iteration is coming soon!”
Another is to provide a quick summary of the comments before moving on. Depending on your workflow, this can be particularly useful as it can provide a simplified checklist that you can then use for the next iteration.
The second friction point is the swoop-by comment, which is the kind of feedback that comes from someone outside the project or team who might not be aware of the context, restrictions, decisions, or requirements—or of the previous iterations’ discussions. On their side, there’s something that one can hope that they might learn: they could start to acknowledge that they’re doing this and they could be more conscious in outlining where they’re coming from. Swoop-by comments often trigger the simple thought “We’ve already discussed this…”, and it can be frustrating to have to repeat the same reply over and over.
Let’s begin by acknowledging again that there’s no need to reply to every comment. If, however, replying to a previously litigated point might be useful, a short reply with a link to the previous discussion for extra details is usually enough. Remember, alignment comes from repetition, so it’s okay to repeat things sometimes!
Swoop-by commenting can still be useful for two reasons: they might point out something that still isn’t clear, and they also have the potential to stand in for the point of view of a user who’s seeing the design for the first time. Sure, you’ll still be frustrated, but that might at least help in dealing with it.
The third friction point is the personal stake we could have with the design, which could make us feel defensive if the review were to feel more like a discussion. Treating feedback as user research helps us create a healthy distance between the people giving us feedback and our ego (because yes, even if we don’t want to admit it, it’s there). And ultimately, treating everything in aggregated form allows us to better prioritize our work.
Always remember that while you need to listen to stakeholders, project owners, and specific advice, you don’t have to accept every piece of feedback. You have to analyze it and make a decision that you can justify, but sometimes “no” is the right answer.
As the designer leading the project, you’re in charge of that decision. Ultimately, everyone has their specialty, and as the designer, you’re the one who has the most knowledge and the most context to make the right decision. And by listening to the feedback that you’ve received, you’re making sure that it’s also the best and most balanced decision.

Trango Carabiners - Why You Should Read Them
The trango carabiners are known as the most modern style of locking carabiner available on the market today. They are manufactured by NBB Australia, a leading manufacturer of car and boat equipment in the world. They were originally designed for use with drop bottom trunks and were the result of a collaboration between a tranger and a suspension engineer from Great Britain. This new style of locking carabiner uses a unique locking mechanism that is both patented. This allows them to be used in applications where other styles of trango carabiners simply cannot be employed.
As a trango carabiner is an "all rounder" this means that it is able to be used in a wide range of circumstances. For example, they can be used for stacking or transporting almost any kind of item easily and safely. Some strange carabiners are also designed specifically for special purposes. For example, there are strange carabiners available that are suitable for securing heavy loads on small trailers. They are also useful for securing ladders and access platforms at work sites.
Because trango carabiners are so versatile, they have become the most popular form of locking trunk in the business. A trango carabiner review will generally feature how users have benefitted from their use. Many people report that trango carabiners are very easy to assemble, making them very user friendly. This is in contrast to traditional locking trunks, which can often be difficult to assemble and can require specialist security equipment to install. Another positive aspect is that trango carabiners research are usually produced at much lower prices than other trango carabiners.
However, not all trango carabiners are made equally. As trango has grown in popularity, so has the manufacture of trango carabiners. In addition to this, many strange manufacturers have begun to tailor make trango carabiners to meet specific needs. Therefore, it is important for consumers to do trango carabiner reviews if they want to purchase the best trango carabiners for their needs. The trango manufacturer will be able to advise on the range carabiners best suit particular situations and individual requirements.
Reviews by trango users are some of the most valuable range carabiner reviews available. These help consumers identify the key issues concerning trango carabiners and help them to determine what features are important to them. For example, some trango users prefer trango carabiners with extra security options, whereas other consumers may prefer a model with a wider range of locks. It is important for range users to read trango carabiner reviews in magazines, on websites and in trango user clubs. In these forums, users can identify models that are popular, those that are of high quality and those that have had problems. By reading range reviews, users can develop an understanding of trango and how it can help their own activities.
With the huge range of range models available, trango reviews can help buyers make a more informed decision. These reviews can also help potential trango buyers understand the trango industry. Trango manufacturers, such as Fassi, Black Diamond and White Mountain, have extensive ranges of range accessories available. Users looking to buy trango accessories can find strange reviews that discuss trango accessories, including trango hooks, orange carabiners and range locks. Reading range reviews will allow consumers to develop an understanding of the range industry and how it can benefit their own activities.

Vlt Marketing
With the growing demand for products in the Vlt. market, manufacturers of these products are looking for cost effective ways to increase their share in this growing but lucrative market. They have therefore come up with many ways to market their products and become more profitable. One such way is the outsourcing of the manufacturing process to other countries like China and Vietnam, where labor and other costs are much cheaper. These countries are able to utilize their productive capacities and become major exporters of goods like LCD monitors, cars, cement etc. Due to the low cost of labor, the cost effectiveness of these products increases and hence they become the vlt market leaders.
Another aspect of the old market, which is contributing to its economical attractiveness is the availability of imported vehicles and other products from Canada and the USA. Most of the Canadian and US vehicles that are imported to these countries do not come from Europe. Hence the price of the vehicles is very competitive and they fit well in the market. There are also many new motor homes available from Canada and USA, which fit perfectly into the existing family vehicles. Since the Vlt. market is a one-stop market for all vehicle needs, Canada and the USA are able to offer great prices and get a good market share.
As far as industries are concerned, vlt market has led to the growth of many small businesses and the creation of many job opportunities. This growth has resulted in the entry of new players into this market who are establishing their own outlets in different areas. Vlt. market research shows that there has been a marked improvement in the efficiency levels of these small and medium sized businesses.
It was in the year 2021, when the idea of introducing a lottery to the Vlt. market was first considered. However, it was rejected by the Canadian government citing the law and public policy implications. With the increasing demand for this game in Canada and in the USA, it was brought up again in the year 2021, this time with improved strategies.
The introduction of online gambling has been responsible for bringing down the cost of placing an advertisement in the Vlt. and all jurisdictions. Since there are only a few authorized all jurisdictions in Canada and the USA, gambling companies have started placing advertisements in those jurisdictions. The Vlt. jurisdictions is limited and hence the advertising costs are therefore reduced to a great extent.
This has resulted in attracting more investors into the vlt market research. The companies which operate in the old market can benefit by reducing their operational and marketing costs. They can also be assured of a much wider customer base since the product management companies that operate in the old market also provide training to the operators and help them design a lucrative advertising and marketing campaign. The concept of all market countries is gaining a lot of popularity in recent times and there is a great scope for expanding the business in this sector in the near future.
The research team projects that the Video Lottery Terminals (VLT) market size will grow from XXX in 2020 to XXX by 2027, at an estimated CAGR of XX. The base year considered for the study is 2020, and the market size is projected from 2020 to 2027.
