A sigh escapes Seungcheol’s lips, his eyes dancing over to your figure that skips towards the car. He locks his phone just as you tap on the glass, popping the trunk before he steps out.

“How’d it go? All checked out?”

“Mmhmm! Did you get in contact with Jeongguk? What’d he say?”

A nervous laugh spills from his lips as he puts your small luggage in the trunk, slamming it shut before rounding the car to open your door. “I’ll help you get settled in at my place and then I’ll drive over really quick and grab the stuff from his place.”

You hop in his car, fiddling with the seatbelt until Seungcheol slides into the driver’s seat.

“He didn’t ask what you needed it for?” Gulp. Shit.

“I just told him that I was thinking about streaming, for--for gaming stuff. He was okay with it.”

He’d tell you the truth. Soon, he promises.

No. Now.

Seungcheol sighs, hands on the wheel as he stares straight ahead. “No, no, I--I can’t sit here and lie to you. Jeongguk knows you. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you earlier, I told him to keep his mouth shut because I didn’t want him to bother you while we were at the roller rink.”

“I--oh…”

He can only nod; eyes dancing over to you as you play with the hem of your dress. “Yeah, I--I’m really sorry. He--He also found out I was ‘dom.cheol’ too and, fuck, I--I don’t know, I kind of panicked too. I hid that part of me from everyone I know so it was just… it was a lot.”

You meet his sad eyes, shooting him a small smile of your own. “It’s okay! It’s a little funny that happens right after that ‘kitty_junjun’ says he saw me in person too, huh? I mean, thanks for trying to protect me at least. It must’ve been weird for you too.”

“Yeah… If you’re not comfortable anymore, I… I’d understand too.” Seungcheol prepares himself for the worst, knowing that there was a chance that this was goodbye.

“Are you kidding! What’s one person gonna do? And you said he’s your best friend and you trust him… I’ll have to take a leap of faith on that one but… I trust you.”

You lean over the center console, kissing him on the cheek. “And anyway, as long as he’s not one of those weirdos asking for ‘favours’, I think we’re in the clear, right?”

Seungcheol grimaces; as long as it’s from me and not you, he thinks.

yes, tysm!! so basically this is a highschool au mailee inspired by betty by taylor swift (bc zukka nation has given me swifty brainrot). 

Mai has an unrequited crush on one of her best friends, Ty Lee, who is always there for her but not in the way she wants. When Ty Lee starts spending more time with Sokka, her new friend and physics tutor, Mai decides it’s time to move on-- and it just so happens that Suki is looking to kill some time after their highschool’s winter formal dance. Mai and Suki start dating and shenanigans ensue!!

This was initially a pretty simple one chapter deal but I kinda fell in love with the Maiki dynamic and now the whole thing is kind of getting away from me. (More under the cut bc I couldn’t help myself!)

"If you're going to be a total stick in the mud, I'm going to find someone else to dance with just to make you jealous," she pouted.

Mai's heart rate jumped just a bit, and she hoped Ty Lee couldn't feel it in the fingers around her wrist. It's not like she knew that yeah, she would be jealous, but it still made her nervous. She wrenched her arm out of Ty Lee's grip just to be safe.

"It's not like it'll be hard for you to find a guy to dance with. Literally every guy in this gym thinks he has a shot with you, since you love flirting so much." Ty Lee's eyebrows scrunched a little and her smile dipped slightly, and she looked like she would've said something if an upperclassman hadn't bounded up behind her. Mai quirked an eyebrow to say see, as a tan hand landed on Ty Lee's shoulder. Her face lit up when she turned to see who it was.

"Sokka! I didn't know you were here!" She throws her arms around his shoulders and he laughs, returning the hug with hands on her waist. Mai watches, wondering if maybe she'd made a mistake in not just going along. But the music had given her a headache and a phantom thrum in her chest that made her feel sick. Or maybe the nausea was just from watching Ty Lee ignore her in favor of a stranger.

"I just got here, I couldn't drop my shift at work. Dance with me?" He says, hands now on Ty Lee's wrist the same way Ty Lee had held Mai's just a moment ago.

"Yes! Spirits, yes," she says, bouncing on her heels with excitement. She turns back to Mai with mock coolness and says, "have fun being a stick in the mud," before bounding off with Sokka into the throng of people.

Mai can still see them from her seat on the bleachers, and her eyes track them as they rejoin what must be Sokka's group of friends, weirdly all juniors even though she knew Sokka was a senior, and began dancing, full of smiles and laughs Mai felt like she could hear even over the music.

She vaguely recognized the early 2010's song that came on next, but she was more focused on how Ty Lee and Sokka were dancing close together, his head lowered to say something in her ear before she threw her head back laughing. Not having Ty Lee to distract her with her rambling left her to be keenly aware of the very beginning of a panic attack washing over her. Resolute not to have a panic attack in front of a good two-thirds of her high school, Mai made her way through the doors to the hallway, and then out towards the courtyard that lay just before the parking lot. The cool January air in her lungs did a wonder on her nerves as she focused on her breathing, but she didn't think she could go back in. She paced back and forth over the concrete a few times, worrying the strap of her mini backpack in her hands, wondering just how mad Ty Lee would be if she asked to leave. She would have skated if Ty Lee hadn't forced her to leave her board at home in favor of Ty Lee's prius, which now also held her overnight bag for the sleepover they planned on and her change of shoes. She could just walk home, it wasn't a big deal, but that would mean pulling Ty Lee out of the gym to unlock her car when she had just started having fun. Mai couldn't help feeling a little bit bad about that, but school dances really weren't her style.

She walked up to the curb and pulled out her phone to shoot off a text to Ty Lee so she wouldn't worry, but was interrupted by a loud truck pulling up in front of her. Ever one to be wary of creeps, her hand went to the small knife she kept in the side pocket of her bag.

The window of the beat up old truck creaked down to reveal Suki leaning across the center console, hair down in a side part and a gold necklace dangling on top of her green strapless dress. "Lost?" she teased, a smile pulling at her lips.

"Haha," she said, dropping her knife back in its place. She knew Suki well enough, as they trained at the same dojo. "Hey, Suki."

"Are you leaving? I can give you a ride, if you want." Mai looked down at the aggressively strappy stilettos Ty Lee and Azula had insisted she wear, and considered her options before tugging the truck door open.

"That would be great, thanks." She dropped her bag onto the floor, which was impressively clean despite the rusting green exterior of the truck, and buckled in before stretching her legs. "How come you're leaving so early?"

"Ugh, that music was just, like, so bad. I don't know who can actually listen to trap for hours on end like that. I was so bored! I'd rather do something actually fun, you know?"

"Yeah, me too." Mai trailed off and noticed the Mitski song playing from the stereo system, a little scratchy from the definitely outdated aux connection to Suki's phone. Suki pulled away from the curb and drove slowly through the parking lot.

They spoke at the same time. "So, where to," Suki asks. "What are you doing now," Mai probes. Mai cringed internally at the awkwardness but Suki just laughed.

"I was gonna get high, actually." The car jostled as they went over the speed bumps at the edge of the parking lot (which Zuko always heartily ignores when he gives his friends rides) and Suki's gold sword earrings swung wildly. Mai's eyebrows lift at the honesty and she turns to look at her.

"Really?" Mai had tried it once, with Zuko and his friend (or whatever) Jet, but it was her first time and she'd hardly gotten even the lightest of highs.

Suki glanced her direction with a shy smile. "You want to join me?"

this is a quirkless izuku au too, mirio got ofa, allmight encouraged izuku to be a hero after the fight but had no quirk to give him and he manages to make his own way into the hero course

so izuku is a little analyst, gets mostly hero points but uses sharp rebar and poles to smash in the sensors of some robots, getting him a few non-rescue points either. Aizawa is watching like "oh interesting a non-combat quirk" and beside him allmight is vibrating with excitement

"he might actually do it!"

"young midoriya on camera 6, he might just be the first quirkless student to pass the enterance exam to heroics straight up"

and aizawa can hardly watch anyone else for the rest of the exam, he adopts this kid on the fucking Spot

hes on the edge of his fucking seat, when nezu sends out the zero pointer. "this kid only needs 10 more points, just ten more" and izuku turns around to look at the 0 pointer and aizawa is like "fuck kid i hope you know what youre doing"

he manages to shove a piece of rebar into the treads, stoping it in its place. it tries to swat him like a bug but he just dives out of the way, picks up ochako and sprints and aizawa is like "holy shit holy shit these bastards better give this kid hero points for that"

like they are assigning final hero points and aizawa has to awkwardly put his hand up "i,,, should probably be excluded from giving midoriya hero points because i went from 0 to bias very very quickly"

allmight just nods sagely

if i dont take care of myself ill never be able to stand up to the heroes w quirks but also do i deserve normal good human things

tl:dr: he can cook well and is trying to teach izuku that 2-minute noodles and apples arent hero fuel

inko is like: "uwu i wont change what i cook for you so you'll just have to make do owo" in like, a pathetic attempt to get him to stop training so izuku runs off protein bars, electrolyte drinks and raw vegetables

SHAKES U ELABORATE ON TDMM TIMETRAVEL AU PLEAES

*IS SHAKEN AROUND AND MY SINGULAR BRAIN CELL MAKES A COWBELL SOUND AS IT HITS THE SIDES OF MY SKULL* AFADSFADSFI I FORGOT THAT I ONLY TOLD CECE ABT THIS AHAHAHA

basically so there’s this tdmm prompt thing going on and almost none of the prompts appealed to me but one (the time travel au), and then my imagination spiraled from there, and i THOUGHT about writing it, but then i looked more closely and saw it asked for basically this really awkward situation that came out of implied smut and i was like *unfiltered disgust* i take this prompt and the spirit it contains and replace it with my own, cooler, character-driven idea which is as follows

it is very long. it is like 2k words as just an idea. it is going under a cut. it’d probably also be rated m for stuff like discussions of sex n stuff and i’m a weenie who can’t rlly talk abt stuff like that outside of a joking context w/o being hella awkward

technically i’m not supposed to talk abt this but since i’m not doing it for the event (and in fact haven’t the time to write it even remotely soon), i’m gonna call a technicality and talk about it anyway

basically, if momo gets taken into the future (and comes back from it, obvs), then she and future todoroki are aware that this was a thing that was gonna happen and are like “yeah i don’t think it would be a good idea to scar past me like that” which also kind of gives me an excuse for momo to be shocked when todoroki knows what’s going on.

i think i’m gonna launch her five years into the future for this one, so they’re like newlyweds w/o kids. anyway, future todoroki fills her in on what’s going on, and fortunately, she doesn’t have work that day or anything, and he takes the day off to keep her company.

meanwhile, future momo in present momo’s body has to hunt down the quirk user to get hit again because when she was hit, the people she was working with fucked up and went to go check on her. so now they have this fucking mystery dude who hit her with a quirk and sent her back in time, and she’s like “aight my time has come” and so basically it takes place over the course of a week.

future momo makes a little diary for past momo to read when she’s in the future, and so future momo thinks she’s got it bc she can vaguely remember what the diary said when she read it at that age, but it turns out that bc she’s so new to diary-keeping that she doesn’t exactly fill in all the perfect details, so she has to improvise as she goes along.

anyway, because this happens over the course of the week or so (maybe extend to a month? a bit longer maybe?) todoroki has to come up with an excuse as to why his wife hasn’t left the house and why he’s been off work for so long. he panics and says she’s pregnant, and when past momo finds out she freaks out bc she hadn’t really given her relationship to todoroki much thought in the past but now they’re like, actually married, huh, that ring on her finger actually means something, doesn’t it? and that means that, since they’re married, they’ve like, banged.

and she gives todoroki this kind of frightened look bc inside, she’s still just sixteen or seventeen, and she’s not ready for this kind of thing. and todoroki knows what she’s asking, he can read her face, and while he feels really awkward and kind of silly he just kind of starts explaining where babies come from, and she has to be like, “no. no oh my god i know where babies come from. i’m asking if i might. if it might. y’know. be real. right now. right here.”

and there’s this pause, and it freaks momo out, but eventually todoroki says it’s very unlikely. they’re still settling into their careers and their lives as newlyweds; it’s very improbable that she’s pregnant.

and momo’s relieved, and she turns back to the diary and she finds her class notes in there w/a note saying “i know all this already now but i took notes for you to learn as well as some things i otherwise would have learned the hard way”

anyway as future momo is in class in the past, she sees todoroki and is very “aww how cute” by how he looked back then, and knowing him the way she does now, she hits on him in the exact chaste way that makes him start seeing her in a different light.

meanwhile, in the future, momo asks todoroki that, if they’re married, and have told each other all these things about each other, does that mean he told her how he got his scar? and he nods, and he tells her, forgetting that this will be the first time she’s heard it from him.

meanwhile, in the past, young todoroki has pulled future momo into an empty hall or closet or smth and tells her his backstory bc it’s not public knowledge that past n future momo have switched consciousnesses. future momo, already knowing this and knowing him is Soft™ and offers her sympathies n comfort in the way he needs. like she offers him her hand or something and a calm, understanding smile, and he’s just like. *touch* and they have a Moment.

past momo, hearing this for the first time, basically crashes and needs some time to process it, so todoroki gives her some time alone while he goes into the hero office to do paperwork. n she processes it, spends her afternoon studying the diary (i.e. the opportunity to flash back to what future momo is doing to track down the guy) and her schoolwork, and maybe kyouka ends up calling her or w/e bc surely other characters are gonna talk to her too, right?

and she tells jirou abt what’s going on assuming that she knew and jirou’s like, “wait are you serious?” and so momo’s like “whoops actually don’t tell anyone please cover for me” and jirou’s just like “wink wonk gotcha but anyway when was this?” and momo has to tell her abt the time when she got launched forward n time and jirou’s just like “ahh yeah i remember that time. you did xxx things and it was super duper cool. guess that was actually future you, huh?”

and momo ends up wondering if she, as in herself who she is right now who will someday grow into that future momo doing all this cool stuff, can really do what appears to be happening in the diary. it seems so outrageous and creative and can she really do all that?

and todoroki comes home and sees past momo worrying over the diary, and she asks if she can really do all that? what if she fails? what if she’s never going to back to her normal life in high school?

and todoroki shushes her down, saying that he trusts his wife. and then he kisses her on the forehead bc he loves her, has loved her for years, but he also knows that’s the scared, sixteen/seventeen-year-old her in there. and momo quiets, her heart racing bc surprise surprise her crush-turned-hot-husband is showing her genuine intimate physical affection in a situation weirdly reminiscent of the “i voted for you” scene, but, like, more sweet. and intimate.

and she starts wondering why he fell in love with her, because she knows why she fell in love with him, but then she realizes she can ask him this, and he tells her, and she watches him as he stares off into the distance all soft, and she realizes he really misses her. the older her, with whom he’s built his life.

and she asks if she’s ever done anything for him in the same way he’s done the “i voted for you” thing for her, and he pauses, comes back down to earth, and says she chose his hero name for him. and she’s like “wait what’s your hero name” and he doesn’t tell her (bc the point is that she’ll go back to the present after getting to know what he ends up as and picks a name for him based off that).

and she’s frustrated, and she wants to do smth for him now. maybe cue a scene where she asks him to have sex or smth bc she wants to make him happy while he misses his “real wife” or w/e i’m gonna have to figure out how to work that and he immediately shoots it down, and they have an argument about power dynamics and whether it’s okay just bc she’s in an older body. what if she switched back while he was gone, huh. would he then. “all right then. when’s our anniversary.” and she loses the argument.

meanwhile, back at the farm, future momo’s thinking abt how to track down the future quirk launcher person while at a girls’ sleepover, and ends up catching someone giving out bad advice and is like, “wait a second. i disagree. *insert good advice here*” and all the girls just stare at her with awed stars in their eyes like “wait yaomomo you’re so matureee omg omg omg” and she’s pleased bc she just seeded like three different relationships going forward in more mature ways

then they ask her about todoroki, and she’s like, “ahhh shit” and so she talks about him as like a person, and they’re like “holy shit yaomomo you can read him that well?” and she remembers, “oh fuck. i’m not supposed to know all this”

so the girls hatch a plan to ask todoroki if he likes momo, and so that happens in momo’s peripheries while she realizes she’s found the quirk person and needs to do the thing, but meanwhile, it kind of dawns on past todoroki that he has a crush on momo and comes up with a plan to confess.

he catches up to her on her stakeout, and is like “yaoyorozu!!” and she turns around right as she spots the villain and she gets hit again, and they switch back into their respective ages, and first of all, adult momo sees her husband again and she’s just like “!!! shoto!! i’ve missed you so much” n they kiss.

n right before young momo switched back, she was reading the diary and realized that even though the plan was written out, older momo never said how it played out or anything (bc she never got to write it down bc they switch back), and she starts freaking out and crying to todoroki, and so when older momo comes back she’s already got tears on her face, and anyway, young momo finds herself face to face w/todoroki, who just confesses, catching her off-guard, and she realizes she’s the one who has to catch the villain now

she panics for a second (and todoroki mistakes this for her hesitating/not liking him back) and says she has to go, and she runs off after the villain bc she can’t just let them get away like this, and todoroki runs after her bc fuck man he needs his answer, and while they’re running, she explains to him what happened (he gets mindfucked) and how they need to catch this guy, and they do it together and it works!! and she’s so relieved and happy and looks at todoroki and realizes he’s still waiting for an answer so then she basically confesses back to him

and that’s technically the end, but i mean obviously, we need an epilogue. for the young vers, they have articles out abt the villain they apprehended together, n todoroki realizes he doesn’t rlly like his hero name, n he n momo are hanging out together and she realizes this is it, this is the moment she chooses his hero name, and so she picks one out for him, and his eyes just kind of light up with this kind of dawning realization that hey!! that’s actually really good!!! and that’s his hero name now. and uhhh for the older vers idk they go out on a date or smth idk. do implied married people stuff.

-Okay. So your best friend Twice introduced you to the league at some point and convinced you to join, and that’s how you met Dabi. Dabi doesn’t tend to say much anyway and since you’re super reserved around people when you first meet, you guys didn’t really hit it off right away. You even got into a couple spats. They were never too bad and it never turned physical, but you would both annoy the shit out of each other.

-That is, until the day you found out that the both of you shared the same sense of humor. Someone (let’s be honest, probably Toga or Tomura) said something slightly suggestive, and you made a twisted joke in response without really thinking about it. Dabi was sitting next to you at the bar at the time and immediately burst out in laughter, which made you laugh too. From then on he was more friendly towards you and actually tried to get to know you.

-A favorite pastime of yours is roasting people together with your sarcastic sense of humor. He thinks it’s absolutely hilarious when you reply sarcastically to something someone said, and he’ll constantly egg you on because of that. He especially loves it when you get sarcastic with Shigaraki. He could watch that all day.

-He also really likes to human watch with you. You guys play that game where you watch people conversing and try to imagine what sort of crazy conversation they could be having. The two of you have come up with absolutely crazy things, and it makes for a good laugh. But other times he’ll take it seriously if you want, and he’ll listen to you while you tell him about how these people are, what you think their personalities are like, and so on. Dabi is pretty sure you’re spot on 99% of the time.

-The more you spend time together the more he realizes he really likes you and everything about you, including the fact that you mountain climb and watch anime. He never knew nature could be so relaxing. The first time he goes rock climbing with you, he feels so alive. It’s so relaxing and freeing for him- please make him do this more. But he’s also just down to watch anime with you if that’s what you want. His favorite physical trait of yours is your eyes. They’re just so...light. He likes to watch the emotions in them, likes to see them glittering with happiness while knowing he’s the one who’s causing that. Of course, he would NEVER say that out loud, but you can see it in that smirk of his.

-Dabi is smart enough to know when you want and need cuddles, and he also knows that you probably won’t ask for them because you’re just not the type to. Which is perfectly fine, because he would much rather give cuddles than receive them! He definitely wants to be the big spoon all the time, and he’s happy to hold you for as long as you want. Honestly, both of you are touch starved. He cuddles with his arms wrapped around you tight and you like to snuggle into him which makes him feel secure. It’s a good balance.

Fall Drable: Leaves/Bonfire

“I wasn’t expecting it to be this cold already.” You shivered and scooted closer to Dabi, your arms wrapped around yourself in an attempt to keep in any warmth you could.

“I told you to check the weather before we went on this mission, you know. That’s your fault entirely. It’s not exactly Summer anymore.” He gave you a side glance before returning his attention to the fire in front of the both of you, orange flames dancing in the reflection of his eyes. 

For a moment it seemed he was just going to sit there and leave you to freeze- you hoped he wouldn’t, but he sure could have his moods sometimes. However, a few seconds after the fact he sighed and wrapped an arm around you to pull you closer, swaddling part of his leather jacket around your frame as he did so. It was hardly big enough for the both of you, but it was all you had; both of you were guilty of under-packing for the weather, and neither of you had thought to bring a blanket or anything warmer than your sleeping bags. The mission wasn’t supposed to last longer than a few days, and the rest of the week had been warm, so you didn’t really think anything of it at the time.

“Can’t this fire get any warmer?” You pressed further into his side, relishing in the small amount of warmth from his coat. “It’s so small, it hardly makes a difference...and I’d rather not get hypothermia and die.” Your breath came out as an icy puff of air as you spoke.

“If you find me something that will burn for a while, we could make a bonfire. But there weren’t many sticks or trees around here...” As he trailed off, he glanced into the small tree row at the edge of the clearing. “We could probably scavenge some wood from that way, but it’s pretty far off.”

“Remind me again why we can’t just use your quirk?”

“Because it’ll burn everything within seconds. Do you want me to light this whole campsite on fire?”

“No thanks, I’m not in the mood for arson right now. Try me again tomorrow though, you never know,” you quipped back, your eyes rolling as you shook your head. You had already known why you couldn’t use his quirk to start the fire, but it didn’t change the amount of annoyance you felt after hearing him say it out loud.

You took a quick look around as well trying to see if there was any garbage or debris that you could light on fire, but you found nothing. Nothing but the large piles of surprisingly still-colorful leaves on the ground, the wind rustling them every time a breeze blew by. Somehow they managed to seem vibrant even after leaving the trees bare by falling to the ground and nestling into the dirt for a while. You leaned down and picked one up, absentmindedly throwing it into the fire.

“Don’t do that, you’ll smoke us ou-” Dabi started to chastise you but quickly stopped as he watched the orange maple leaf smolder in the embers of the fire without drowning your campsite in smoke. “Hey, it’s actually burning.” Maybe... “I’m gonna go see if I can find some larger sticks by the row of trees. You stay here by the fire and gather up a couple piles of leaves. If we can burn up enough dry leaves with the sticks, then they’ll catch fire to the logs and keep it going.”

“I’ll do anything if it means this fire gets even slightly warmer.”

A half hour later you had four different piles of leaves and a couple of nice sized logs stacked to the side of the pit, thanks to your and Dabi’s efforts. Dabi set up a few sticks and two logs in the middle over the embers of the previous smaller fire, and then the two of you grabbed a handful of leaves each to throw on top. They caught fire almost immediately, and you kept piling them on as they burned up, the sticks eventually following suit. Next came the logs, and before you knew it, you had a sizable fire in front of you, warm flames licking at the wood and providing you both with heat.

“Finally...” you sighed, relaxing into your partner’s side once more.

“What a pain in the ass.” Beside you, Dabi returned to wrapping an arm around you, though he must not have felt like sharing his jacket anymore now that the fire was stronger.

“Me, or the fire?” you laughed, though you already knew how he would reply.

“Both.” He gave you that trademark smirk of his.

sup ok here’s the promised details on uhhhhhh All for One in @guardianlioness​‘s and I’s Ageswap Mess, formed by collaborative headcanon jamming on discord and then roughly paraphrased via a run thru the unfortunate Quadruple Lengthening Filter that’s built into my brain bc I’m incapable of being brief.

(something of an expansion on this post and this ask. Nooooot spoiler free, actually pretty spoilers, idk, will pop it under a readmore bc who knows how long I’m gonna go on also)

ALSO!! I can’t at u but @randommly-passing-mia u asked forever ago about Toshinori and AfO’s relationship in this AU and i answered what I could then but I’m pleased to announce this goes more into that bc I knew Very Little back then. :)

So, All for One! Now, I feel it appropriate to note that the previous post I made regarding the history of OfA in Ageswap, as well as just about everything I’ve posted abt AfO and OfA for Ageswap (except for the linked ask above, obv) was made before the arc with the League of Villains and Shigaraki’s backstory all came out. Now that we’ve got some of those contexts, we can go a little further in fleshing everything else out, which we did, a little, today.

Pls keep in mind that Ageswap’s goal is not and never has been to make a direct 1:1 translation of adults to kids and vice versa -- good lord we’d have a lot of empty spaces if we were doing that. So, uh. Anyway. it’s time for “we make a mess of the characters and also the timeline and the plot because it’s Our City Now”

Student AfO is a different creature to small Toshinori of our au. For the purposes of this post we’ll call him AfO, because while I’d love to just jump into referring to him as Shigaraki there’s a lot of confusions that lie down that road. Also, again, we’re calling mr heckhands mcmike Tomura, because Shigaraki is a name with Weight.

Because canon parallels, Ageswap AfO has a little brother who we’re making Kyudai Garaki/the Good Doctor and also quirkless for our purposes (whether he’s AfO’s biological brother is up in the air, we haven’t settled yet). Garaki has something of an intense obsession with quirks, constantly studying and doing research, not unlike Izuku, and the age gap between him and AfO is... about six years. Now, because AfO had already manifested a quirk of his own and that quirk had fearsome potential, One for All was originally going to be passed on to his brother, because before Ageswap Izuku, OfA had strictly been handed down to trained members of the family.

Tomura was a member of the group that had, through the generations, been working to fight against the users of One for All. To hit them where it hurt, he attacked Izuku’s mentor’s (we’ll call them the Mentor) home with a group of League fighters. When he found out there was a quirkless boy, and a second one who was all but quirkless for all that he’d been told to avoid using his own powers, he quickly took them in under the League’s wing -- both in an act of cruelty against OfA and out of some misguided sympathy for the boys.

The fearsome thing is the toxicity of the relationships Tomura formed with the League, and eventually with the boys. He meant well, when he took them in, but whatever this version of him went through... well, just about all his relationships are some level of manipulative and unhealthy by default. See: his tendency for physical closeness and being tactile, as mentioned in the ask.

He’s firmly of an opinion along the lines of “if you’ve got the power, and you know you have the power, and you’re not using it to do whatever you can or want, then why do you even have it?” and, for all of AfO’s childhood, Tomura tried his hardest to share this with AfO and sway the kid to his side. With the Mentor having dropped off the grid and abandoned the Shigaraki name in grief, AfO and his brother had nowhere else to go, but AfO was a smart and cautious kid: he couldn’t just listen without a fight, or a reason.

(AfO didn’t know Tomura meant to kill them, that he attacked their home on purpose. When he eventually finds out, he firmly believes Tomura meant to save them)

But Tomura’s persistent, and he doesn’t stop, and eventually he points out: if All for One is a quirk that allows him to take and give quirks, does that not mean he can seek out the perfect quirk for his little brother? All the reasons he’s suffered, AfO has the power to fix that.

That’s the thing that sways AfO to their side, that convinces him to stay with the League and learn under Tomura. Because if it’s for family, isn’t it worth it?

(AfO sees Tomura as a teacher, as a friend, as someone beloved and important. Shigaraki was AfO’s name, but it can be Tomura’s too, if Tomura wants. Then everyone knows they’re family. And Tomura accepts it -- another spit in the face of an enemy, a welcomed token from a beloved student. Shigaraki is a good name for the rest of the world to use, but Tomura, Tomura is a name for the League and the League alone.)

AfO tries, at first, to find other quirks for his brother while he trains, while his brother studies (while Tomura tries to sway Garaki to their side also, because look at what you know, what you could do with that knowledge, combined with your brother’s quirk, you’re so young and so so smart-). OfA is gone beyond the League’s sight, in the hands of the Symbol of Peace, so there’s no point on dwelling on it, really, surely another quirk would work better?

But then One for All comes back around, in the hands of this blond... nobody. His brother’s quirk, running around in a stranger. AfO continues to hunt potential quirks down for his brother and his brother’s studies, but he has a new goal: to try and claim OfA back and give it to who it really belongs to.

the problem of course being that he can’t take it by force like every other quirk, and killing Toshinori would merely render it lost forever.

Essentially, AfO’s primary grudge against Toshinori is the fact that he’s the current bearer of a quirk that, in AfO’s eyes, should belong to Garaki. And Toshinori’s quirklessness, or past quirklessness... is easy to know when you know the secret of One for All.

Some good stuff gets said abt AfO vs Toshinori in this answer here I think, and I’m drawing on it: Toshinori’s more instinct and heart to AfO’s logic and strategy. That’s not to say, obv, that neither of them draw on the other quality, but it’s what stands out most to me about the two of them and just, kind of their general dynamic (or at least, that’s how it seems).

USJ was a subtle message laid beneath a louder declaration. Two-for-one, if you will. “Wouldn't it be so nice to have a quirk that fit better in your hands? that didn't fritz or go funky whenever you so much as turned your head? A quirk you might not even have to coax and strain and train and change your body for?”

But AfO does not confront Toshinori until much later, until after the sports festival. See, the mall incident in this AU is a scene on bargaining.

He confronts Toshinori at the mall -- his face is not known, and it’s a simple matter to pull him off to the side. But there won’t be fighting here today. No, he only came to talk.

Questions, first. About Toshinori, his experience with One for All, what he thinks of other people’s quirks. About what it was like for him, growing up quirkless, left abandoned by so many people for it. Eventually, his conversation circles back around. I have a little brother. He’s quirkless, just like you. You know what he went through, what he suffered.

All for One even did his research, is even willing to play by rules closer to Toshinori’s own: tucked under his arm is a folder, with lists upon lists of people. Villains with sentences for life, villains under the death sentence, people who would have no life of returning to the world ever again. People who don’t have a reason to use their quirks any longer. People for whom it wouldn’t matter if he took their quirks anyway. “Take your pick,” he offers Toshinori. “I’ll give you whatever quirk you’ve ever wanted. I’ll even take it from a villain so none of your precious civilians have to suffer the loss — but that one belongs to my little brother.”

And, well. We all know he says no.

Why would Toshinori hang onto a quirk that isn’t even his? All the people out there, bearing the quirks that his brother and even his greatest enemy were robbed of at birth, and AfO has the power to grant both Toshinori and Garaki the power that they’d dreamed of, that belongs to them. He knows what it means to suffer without a quirk. Why won’t Toshinori let him fix that?

and idk specifically what Toshi would say, but I think it’s something along the lines of “no one asks for what they're born with or given, but we make the most of it anyway. That's how we're supposed to live.“

Anyway Toshinori and All for One hate each other SO fucking much but. Unfortunately, also just kind of Get Each Other on some level. Like, they despise one another but also, if there’s one thing they can believe in, it’s that the other will always Be The Way They Are. Friendly Enemyship, if you will.

There’s some level of pity that AfO also holds on the percieved coldness of Toshinori’s relationship to his mentor, Izuku. Izuku is... really awkward, in his relationship with Toshi, and while Izuku loves his student very much he has a hard time showing it -- and Toshinori thinks so poorly of himself, it’s hard to grasp how close they are from the outside sometimes. AfO totally tries to recruit Toshinori to their side, even after he figures they’re Tight and also even though he knows Toshinori won’t ever say yes. Like, he hates the guy, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a kickass ally.

Tomura would like Toshinori and AfO says as much to his face. “You’re more like him than I am, anyway. You can act without overthinking. And he wouldn’t care if you were quirkless. He doesn’t with my brother.”

(Toshinori hates that. He isn’t, he isn’t he isn’t like him at all.)

Tomura has also more or less promised AfO that, at the end of his lifespan, his student should take on Decay. AfO, of course, doesn’t want that and is on the hunt for a good longevity quirk to give to his mentor

In the end, the way All for One is kind of being played in this AU is something not so far off from Anakin Skywalker.

-when bnha was first gaining traction on tumblr, it was all art of Tsuyu. I have no idea why. People were talking about the funky frog lesbian superhero anime. Maybe it was just the people I was following, maybe it was a general trend, but I LOVED her design!!! my fav color and frogs r super cute!!! And I already loved superhero media, so I was like. I’ll watch it. For Her. SO. FROPPY IS THE REASON I WATCHED/READ BNHA. I went in thinking she was the protag and I was sooo confused when Izuku was... tbh I still think it’d be more interesting if she was lmaooo aus where? ...seriously if anyone has good aus where this is the case send them LOL

-I don’t actually feel that bad abt what Shigaraki’s doing. I still feel bad for him. I’m this post. yes im an apologist. its not my fault hes sexy and has been running around shirtless. hes a lesbian icon like thor is. I want to touch his hair. hes never done anything wrong in his life. he could kill all might, deku, bakugo, whatever, I’d still be sayin this. I don’t feel bad for gt. like. was anyone genuinely attached to him? lmao

-well u know how spinner’s quirk is just sticking to things? We haven’t seen him use it in canon except like, (1) time iirc?? I think this is probably bc he’s embarrassed about it even in front of the league... I loooove the idea that he gets more comfortable with it around them :”) and also how shigaraki. um. does that falling asleep thing while standing up with his eyes open, canonly? (which I still love lmfao) Imagine someone in the league walking in a dark room, turning on the light n just seeing. Spinner upside down, stuck to the ceiling asleep bc heat rises and its Warmer Up There. (cold blooded thing like tsuyu?? come ON give him a big fuzzy coat and scarf...) and Shigaraki in the center of the room, slouched but still standing, eyes open and motionless. Theyre both sleeping. Whomever sees it just...slowly walks out. LMAO

-Toga roller derby au. No deep thoughts I just think she’d be good at it.��

-Toga 100% is a social butterfly and could befriend anyone if they didn’t just judge the fact she was trying to stab them smh :/ (ok but seriously anytime I see cute friendships with her n the other kids im like :) aw. I feel like her and Camie...would be good friends. Camie feels chill enough to be like ‘ok whatever thats totally fine I forgive you!!’ LMAO we love airheads here)

-HOW DID TOGA GET SO GOOD AT FIGHTING? We know she’s been on the run since middle school or so, but good enough to pin Deku down after he’s been formally trained at a ~hero school~ for a while? (she pinned him TWICE I think, once when his arms were messed up, but, the other time as Camie, so? AND THEN WAS ONE OF THE 100 PEOPLE TO GO THRU TO THE 2ND ROUND OF THAT? even tho she didn’t bc she had to leave) good enough to beat Aizawa in a fight and stab him? A professional hero and teacher for YEARS? Is that seriously just street training??? Can people acknowledge how amazing her combat skills and reflexes are??? More Toga appreciation when?? Also her backstory??? SO subversive and incredible, hate when people reduce her to just a ~typical anime yandere~ :/

-Tomura doing stuff with his hands/fingers to train his quirk!!! And to learn to be careful with it!! obv I’m a Big Fan of him playing piano to do this and video games are prob the canon answer, but like, guitar or any stringed instrument that requires Hands would work too. Or knitting/sewing? EMBROIDERING? ??? Please, let me give you the mental image of him knitting aggressively while mentally scheming, watching a twitch streamer or smth too while doing it. (Doing stuff with your hands is a great way to let your mind come up with creative stuff, that’s how I come up with writing/drawing ideas 70% of the time)

-Tomura actually PREFERS cutesty, relaxing games. I mean, he does fighting and bloody stuff irl, games are a way to relax...he’ll play shooters and gta type games with The Lads, but. on his own?? animal crossing. pokemon. kirby games. mario. zelda. BIG ZELDA FAN (not saying this bc I, personally, am biased, but,) slime rancher, stardew valley, funny simulator games... he really enjoys those :”) God forbid he has a kid bc they’re 100% getting named after a viddy game character unless someone can talk him out of it LOL. Toga and Tomura are that animal crossing /doom meme where she’d be asking for doom and him asking for animal crossing :”)

-Bits and pieces of Before are kinda stuck in Kurogiri’s brain, but like. mostly useless stuff the doctor didn’t care about removing. Like, types of clouds. So Tomura kinda picks up on stuff like that. He can just look at clouds and tell you what type they are because Kurogiri used to take him up to high places in the city and point them out to calm Tomura down from a panic attack when he was younger. He can tell you if the sky looks like it’ll rain with a 80% accuracy rate too. 

-Kurogiri left food out for kitties in the alley beside the bar. They weren’t allowed in for Health Reasons (it IS a bar with sanitation standards!!) And Tomura really wouldn’t stop it or encourage it either way so long as Kurogiri did his job, but occasionally would stand outside with Kurogiri and just watch the kitties from a distance. If any approached he’d go back in (lowkey afraid he’d hurt them by touching them :( ) They kinda kept that between them tho, bc they both Know AFO is a big bag of dicks and no fun

-people have pointed out how similar aizawa and tomura look. this was 100% the intention. tomura has a hatecrush on him. THIS IS SO FUNNY AND HORRIBLY AWKWARD FOR KUROGIRI LMAO

-Sako??? Mr. Dramatic?? Opera fan. Drama kid. Like, obviously, but. Really. He is. I feel like he can speak a dozen languages. I also feel like he used to be an overachiever but got too ambitious. He was def some kind of leader at one point of a diff Group or something that fell apart. I LOVE how creative he is with his quirk and the magician theme??? incredible. I don’t show him enough love but I Love Clowns :o)

-I don’t care what their canon heights are. Spinner and Dabi? short kings. My height hcs are (tallest to shortest) Kurogiri, Twice, Sako (who also has heels on his boots and a tall hat, keep in mind), Tomura, Magne (Tomura and Magne are about the same height imo) Toga, Spinner, Dabi. LISTEN. Dabi has short energy. Sorry. it’s true tho

-This is a semi-popular hc I think bc I KNOW I’ve seen it before, but Dabi having Terrible Vision and needing glasses is so so good. (seriously, with burns THAT close to his eyeballs, how could he not?) 

-he tries to be a tough loner coolguy. you’d think he’d smoke, but I hc his ‘weak constitution’ comes with weak lungs (esp from years of a flame quirk?? inhaling smoke over so much time is SO bad for you, most people who die in fires actually die of smoke inhalation...) so he’s got like, an inhaler, can’t smoke, actually gets carsick, needs glasses, overuses quirk to save friends constantly, likes napping, a little awkward and rude. Tomura put him in charge of the vanguard so he’s smart, and good with strategies too, like a nerd. this is the Dabi I wanna see, not the popular fandom version of him tbh also step on hawks one more time sir :”)

-I wish all the lov fics weren’t?? villain!deku like I said earlier, but also, chatfics? I have nothing against them but most of them are just a bombardment of Memes with NO PLOT!!! (1/2) I was looking at your about me and your description of how Bakugo makes you feel is so relevant to me. like I'm big into the 'everyone deserves a second chance and to get better if they truly put the effort into changing' mindset, but also I have experience with when people you think are your friends being abusive towards you and I'm just :/ not impressed with that boy. I was hoping he was changing but he really isn't bc in that recent chapter he looks down on the previous OfA holders

(2/2) for having 'weak' quirks and it is just a reminder that he is still the same person. he isn't becoming more neutral towards Izuku because he is growing as a person, he is just accepting that he has a powerful quirk now. he is literally only treating him marginally better because he's accepted that he's not 'weak' anymore and honestly I'm fuming. it breaks my heart that Izuku treats their fight like a resolution when it was really about Bakugo and his feelings not their past.

im really big on the whole “second chances” thing esp in like narratives bc it gives me hope,,,like we all mess up at some point or another but when i messed up i took it Incredibly Hard so all the reminders that ppl can earn second chances give me hope for myself, regardless of if those reminders r fictional

however theres also, u know, lines if u will, and every line a character that eventually will get a redemption arc crosses means the greater the work theyre gonna have to do during said redemption. bakugou has crossed a couple of those and this far in the story with him only halfheartedly trying? i can understand why youd be a lil eh

i havent read the chapter where the prev users’ quirks have been revealed so i cant rlly comment on that, but ur right abt the thing abt bakugou treating midoriya better only bc he has a strong quirk now. like he has to acknowledge him now whereas he used to call midoriya “nothing more than a pebble on the side of the road”. and that’s development in its own right sure but they’ve still got a Long way to go before they can become friends is all so i understand being “:/” abt how midoriya reacts to it all

also the resolution thing made me angry as well i want midoriya to like,,,he should be able to talk to you know. when they do have an actual conversation abt their beef, mido should get to talk just as much as baku, if not more. youre completely right that their fight was abt bakugou’s feelings and not their past. im not as mad as i was before tho bc horikoshi has said in an interview that this wasnt an actual resolution to their shared issues and that there needs to be an actual apology so ive gotten closure and hope for this one sjksjk

he can’t completely get that redemption until he clearly acknowledges he was wrong before. im still optimistic that he’ll change cause like zuko’s redemption arc happened in like a season and it still turned out fantastic and also iron man did some shitty things before becoming a superhero but he still made it through. but i get being exhausted with bakugou that way he is now

hes just ugh. so complex. he has so much potential but in canon so far he’s only lived up to some of it and it is v frustrating i know

basically my feelings are: im tired of him right now but i have so much hope he will get the development that will make him a great character. i understand why u’d lose some hope for that nony but hori himself has said that baku needs to apologize so im sure we’ll get smth!

Quirk: Steam – Kaneda can build up and blow a hot steam that can potentially burn (or even melt depending on the force) his opponents. (Ahaha, the quirk fits the body appearance. I bet this one is going to be a hot head or really sweet)

Weakness: Building up and releasing too much steam at once can cause overexertion to the point where he can and will collapse and not be able to move for a while. Also his fucking ego. (LMFAO, I guess we’re dealing with the former and not the latter!)

Personality: Kaneda becomes the main symbol of defiance, expressing anarchy behavior towards authority and absolutely does not accept blatant disrespect. Kaneda values loyalty and becomes vengeful when trust is broken. He is impulsive, hot-headed, egotistical, and maintains a tough exterior; however, he is brave, independent, and highly empathetic. As a leader, Kaneda will look out for the safety and well-being of his allies, and will throw himself in front of a bullet for them if need be. (This!! I like that you didn’t make him a straight jerk and that you gave him good traits as well!)

Do they work well with others?: You are either with him or against him. By default he will work well if not negotiate unless you have a badge stating your authority.

Family: Parents deceased; family is his gang of brothers, all misfits and loyal to the bone

What do they think about heroes?: Oh shit oh fuck uhhhh

A couple of things about heroes. He sees the rise of fame being motivation for pro-heroes lately. They seem real fake to him, and it runs along the lines of Stain’s idea of “false heroes”. But he also sees them as a bunch of buzz kills when he’s trying to ride out and do his own thing that happens to be illegal. (LOL this guy is so problematic in a very headass type of way and it’s really entertaining. He’s a really fun character to read about.)

What do they think about villains?: They’re somewhat easier to work with, but he does not associate himself with hardcore villains either. As much as he himself could easily be considered one, he considers himself more in a grey area. He won’t kill a hero – actually he hesitates to kill anyone – but he won’t turn on a villain either if only because any of them could either arrest him or kill him. (Ah, he’s smarter than he lets on. I wonder how much of this is empathy and how much of this is him saving his own ass,,)

In terms of villains, he’s very much along the lines of “snitches get stitches”. At this point it doesn’t matter what his views are with a villain or a rival gang, he’s not gonna call the cops or any heroes as that is a lower blow than trying to either run or solve the issue on his own. He would rather risk his dignity than call the authorities. 

Is their first reaction to danger: flight or fright?

Depends on the danger. If he knows it’s an even match, he’ll throw fists. If he knows he has no chance, he’ll turn tail (heh) and run. (i’m actually laughing omg stop)

Halloween. As a child he always loved to dress up as his favorite hero. As an adult, he’s more attuned to the day before Halloween as “Mischief Day” and takes “tricks” to the extremes.

His wardrobe is casual and lazy punk clothes. He does occasionally sport a bright red jacket with his gang’s logo on the back.

Definitely not book smart, but strongly street smart and highly confident in his actions. The only inconsistencies were, at the top you put his age as 17 but in the “what type of student were they” you mentioned him turning 18 but otherwise he is a really solid character! I’m 20 something so I can’t crush on anyone younger than 20 but he’s really… *deep breath* …moving on. I love his personality and the fact that he’s this punk but in reality he’s an impartial dude who is chill unless something offends him or opposes him but he is also very loyal and empathetic, two qualities that I love!

What job do you see him having in the future? He’s not really here no there so i’m interested!

After he drops out of high school, he flat out does not know what to do. As he is familiar with criminal work, he stays to what he knows with his bike gang... and incidentally gets picked up by mob members. He begins as an errand boy for one organized group, but never is he ever initiated as a member. After having been exposed by a variety of assignments from various villains, by the age of 20 he’s doing all kinds of illegal work. He becomes a man for hire in the undergrounds, helping with drug trafficking, enforcement, body guarding, petty thieving, etc. You name it, he’s probably done it.

But that’s only in the dark. To keep himself balanced, he’s also a bar back for a local bar in the sketchy side of town. An honest job when he meets people and can tell them what he does for work without putting off any red flags.

A couple of reasons why he does shady work is not due to enjoyment. Actually, he wishes he never got involved as everyday feels like he’s at risk of getting killed for angering the wrong person. He doesn’t plan ahead of his life only because he could step outside one morning and breathe his last breath. For one thing, his best friend who grew up with him and is part of his gang is in rehab at this point and Kaneda is the only person who he can turn to for help -- by this, Kaneda opts to pay those hospital bills with the quick and astounding amount of money he receives from criminal work. Another reason is plain and simple: once he has done work for one organized criminal group, once his name is spread around the underground as a reliable hire, there’s no way of suddenly dropping that life without risking it all.

Is there anything in particular he does to relax?? Tv, music, hobbies, etc,

The best way he can relax is riding his motorcycle in the late hours of the night. He loves the city, and will speed through until he finds open road where he will just continue to ride until he feels calm again.

If he’s especially frustrated and the steam has built up in his lungs, he will hold it in until he finds a safe spot (preferably home) to release it all and collapse for a while. Yes, his apartment would be a sauna if he doesn’t open his windows.

Sex also helps.

Is he a pessimist or optimist? He’s very unbiased it seems so I wonder what his personal mindset is,,

More of an optimist, but in a way where he prefers to mask sorrow and tension with humor and a lighter perspective. He can’t afford to not be confident, and he tries his damndest to pass that on given the circumstances. “This will work” he would say to an idea he briefly thought of, mostly trusting his gut and hoping that if he passes on the mindset and convinces others of his confidence, then yes in some way things will work out.

But I also say that he’s not very optimistic of his own future (sorry to bring this back). He lives for the moment, but given the life he lives, he does not trust it will be a long one. 

So it’s hard to explain, but he’d more say, “nothing matters in the end; do whatever the hell you want now”.

bc like

everyone who knows isak (boy squad, girl squad, kollektivet) thinks he’s really grumpy all the time and the type of person to scoff at emotions

and isak is like that sometimes

but this bABY becomes an absolute marshmallow around his boyfriend and i want other people to witness it

kollektivet would see this side of him first since they live w him and even basically lives with them

(also they saw how much isak worried about and took care of even during that one awful week in december)

so imagine noora coming into the kitchen, intent on making herself a nice fruit salad for breakfast when she finds even at the hob and isak plastered to his back, face smushed between even’s shoulderblades and his eyes closed

she hovers in the doorway, biting down a smirk at how isak almost seems to be sleeping standing up except for the way his arms occasionally tighten around even’s middle while even talks

before she can decide how to interrupt them, eskild appears behind her

he takes one look at them, grins and says, “even, you’ve got a grumpy seventeen year old on your back”

when isak pulls away to glare at him eskild waves a hand and is like, “nvm, it’s gone”

even laughs but isak is pouting so even lifts his arm, letting isak tuck himself into his side

“you gonna help me with the pancakes or just prevent me from using my left arm?” even asks, quirking his eyebrows as he grins down at isak

“you can manage one handed,” isak mumbles and then. oh boy, then it happens

bc they have nEVER seen isak make a face like that before

for the whole time isak has lived with eskild he’s almost permanently been frowning

and noora didn’t really know isak that well before he moved into the flat but she could never really believe the stories eva would tell her about how cute isak could be

and isak lets out a long-suffering sigh from where he’s perched sideways on even’s lap, back resting against the wall with even’s arm around his waist to keep him steady

“eva, it’s 9 in the morning, i’m barely awake right now. let me sit on my boyfriend’s lap”

eva is literally so gleeful at the sound of isak saying the word “boyfriend” she can only nod and bite back her smile

but then it gets wORSE bc even smiles at isak and makes some teasing comment and isak rolls his eyes and it’s the fONDEST eye roll she’s ever seen from him 

eva remembers the way isak was when they were fifteen/sixteen and she knows he changed a lot in the year or so when they weren’t really friends but she thinks even the old isak couldn’t rival the version of isak she sees now 

so happy and comfortable and gentle and not at all ashamed to be like that

she’s so happy for him

“Do you know what the word nonbinary means?”

He raises an eyebrow and frowns, considering. “A number that’s not a power of two?” he tries, offering a cautious smile.

She snorts with a quirk of her lips. “Close, but not quite.” She starts to pull out the pins holding her hijab together, placing them in a small bag in front of her. The layers of the scarf unravel around her face.

“It, uhm, well. It kind of means someone that doesn’t feel like a girl or a boy? I guess you could say that nonbinary people are, like, in between being a girl or a boy, even though I’m pretty sure some people don’t feel like that? Like agender people, y’know? I mean, I’m pretty sure they fall under the term of ‘nonbinary’ or ‘genderqueer’ or whatever, but they don’t really have a gender? I guess? Yeah.”

She’s rambling, pulling the sleeves of her shirt down so that they wrap around her fingertips in that way she always does when she’s nervous.

Huh. She’s nervous.

He tilts his head. “That makes sense, yeah. Why bring it up? Is it part of your homework?” He can’t help but notice the way her shoulders noticeably relax when he confirms what she’s saying.

“No, but - uh. I think I might be? Nonbinary, I mean?” She curls in on herself, shoulders hunching in towards her chest as if she expects some sort of rejection. One of the layers of her hijab covers her expression.

He raises an eyebrow. “Okay, cool. What does this mean, then?” James’ tone is filled with relaxed confusion, and he watches with the tiniest of smiles as Sumaya lights up, breathing in deeply.

“Oh! Yeah, okay.” She cuts herself with a shaky hand wiping itself across her mouth. She starts fidgeting again, pulling at the strings of her scarf and rubbing the skin of her thumb and index fingers together.

“So, uh, maybe different pronouns? I can explain that to you later, hah. And- uh, I’ve been thinking about a new name, maybe? I’m not sure about it, but. Definitely a consideration.” The words fly out of her mouth like spitfire, each one landing in front of him as if she were afraid they’d burn her tongue if she didn’t speak fast enough.

“Huh. Okay. I mean - I get what pronouns are, no need to explain that, but I’m guessing you wouldn’t want to use guy pronouns-”

“He-him. That’s what you’d say.” She replies instantly; it sounds like a reflex. “Sorry.”

James smiles softly. “No need to apologize, love. He-him, okay - so you wouldn’t use that because you don’t… feel like a guy, right?”

Sumaya nods hesitantly.

“But not she-her, either, because you’re not a girl.”

Another nod.

James’ eyes flicker around the room as he considers this, and he misses the shaky breath Sumaya lets out. “Okay. So what pronouns would you use, then? Not ‘it’ or anything like that, right? Because that seems kind of, uhm. Dehumanizing.”

She laughs, just a bit, and her shoulders relax from the subconsciously hunched position they were in before. She pushes the remains of her hijab down so that they rest around her neck. “No,” she corrects with a smile. “That’s only for inanimate objects, I’m pretty sure. I would use they-them, probably.”

“Huh. That’s not… singular, though, is it? Correct me if I’m wrong, obviously, but isn’t that pronoun only used for a group of people?” She - they - laugh.

“Nah, it’s been used as a single-person pronouns since, like, the 1500’s; it just hasn’t really been recognized until recently. You can look up the timeline, it’s actually pretty cool. But, uh. Yeah.”

James scrubs his face with his hands. “Okay. It might take a little while for me to get used to it - feel free to correct me if I fuck up, pardon my French - but thanks for telling me, hun.” He smiles in a way that he hopes is reassuring, and Sumaya lets out a shuddering breath, looking vaguely like they’re about to cry.

“Whoa- whoa, what’s up, love? What’s wrong?” He leans forward in response to grasp one of Sumaya’s hands that lays, stationary, on the table. They shake their head quickly, breathing in another stuttered breath.

“No, I just. Fuck. I’m so happy, I’m sorry, I know it’s dumb, I was just so worried, god, I’m sorry, I’m just so happy,” she they ramble, using their free hand to wipe away the tears threatening to spill from their eyes.

“Aww, love, that’s okay.” He stands up, careful not to dislodge his hand from their tight grip, and walks around the table to envelop her in the tightest hug he can manage.
