#in general that is my main “complaint” this era #the album is extremely well produced and also they are experimenting more with harry's voice on it #which i absolutely love (it is my favourite album of his after all lol)#but unfortunately this has one not so great side effect #and it's that there's not much enhacement when he sings those songs live (to be honest it's usually a bit of a downgrade)#which - and i said this before - is a very new experience to me as a harry fan lol #bc before harry's house i'd say he would usually take an already amazing song and make it even better live #like with adore you for example #a song that's already a perfectly crafted pop record and then he'd go on stage and make vocal changes that would make it even more perfect #that doesn't really happen with songs from this album #except maybe for daydreaming

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".

Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"

And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".

Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.

At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.

So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!

Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!

Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

#hlep #original #mental health #my sympathies and empathies to anyone who has to rely on this kind of hlep to get what they need.#the people in my life who most need to see this post are my family but even if they did I sincerely doubt they would internalize it #i've tried to break thru to them so many times it makes my head hurt. so i am focusing on boundaries and on finding other forms of support #and this thing i learned today helps me validate those boundaries. the example with the milk was from my therapist.#the example with the towing company was a real thing that happened with my parents a few months ago while I was age 28. 28!#a full adult age! it is so infantilizing as a disabled adult to seek assistance and support from ableist parents.#they were real mad i was mad tho. and the spoons i spent trying to explain it were only the latest in a long line of #huge family-related spoon expenditures. distance and the ability to enforce boundaries helps. haven't talked to sisters for literally the #longest period of my whole life. people really believe that if they love you and try to help you they can do no wrong.#and those people are NOT great allies to the chronically sick folks in their lives.#you can adore someone and still fuck up and hurt them so bad. will your pride refuse to accept what you've done and lash out instead?#or will you have courage and be kind? will you learn and grow? all of us have prejudices and practices we are not yet aware of.#no one is pure. but will you be kind? will you be a good friend? will you grow? i hope i grow. i hope i always make the choice to grow.#i hope with every year i age i get better and better at making people feel the opposite of how my family's ableism has made me feel #i will see them seen and hear them heard and smile at their smiles. make them feel smart and held and strong.#just like i do now but even better! i am always learning better ways to be kind so i don't see why i would stop

i'll be real, i always hated it whenever media tries to "critique" Christianity while portraying all Christians as bigoted, misogynistic and irredeemable. its why it matters a lot to me that my own angels have some nuances to them.

Sera is very puritanical and obsessed with showing her devotion to God, but she's still a caring and well-meaning angel.

I was playing around with expressions and OMG, I think I unlocked something???

It was mostly from yesterday’s post, I liked the way I drew Pizza Head so I decided to try drawing him again (since it’s been a while) AND GOD I LOVE THESE‼️‼️‼️ Seriously started out rough but then I just kind rolled with it! I like it! I like it a lot‼️ 😆😆

it does something incomprehensible to my little writer’s soul whenever alex articulates a phenomenon of the writing process i’ve always picked up on and then goes on to describe it in exactly the same way

my favourite sexuality for comic book characters to be is "we made this other character canonically queer because of their relationship with them but for some reason they are still canonically straight"

like wade wilson? mostly canonically queer because of the period where he was married to cable. he was in a queer relationship, so we have to just make him canonically queer. (Yes I know it's not the only reason, I have read all his extremely camp early 00s comics, but lets be real they'd have kept insisting that was all just a joke if it wasn't for Cable and Deadpool).

cable? definitely straight. 100% straight. obviously cable is straight. his relationship with wade is only gay during the & Deadpool, in the Cable part of the book it's very straight. He stands next to a woman sometimes, that's how you can tell it's not gay.

Kitty has, finally, been allowed to come out, but for like a decade, Illyana was canon queer because she dated Kitty, but Kitty was definitely straight and would never date a woman, and no one at marvel thought there was anything weird about that.

Marvel has way more of these, mostly by virtue of having more queer characters and also chris clairmont (you can never understate the impact of chris clairmont in these matters) but Tim Drake and Kon Kent spring to mind from DC.

I think you could even make a solid argument that 616 Tony and Steve are that, given Tony is out now and Steve, somehow, still isn't.

anyway you don't really get these in any other medium, because they require multiple writers who all wildly disagree with one another to all write the same characters to happen, but i love them, and as much as I want Cable and Kon to come out, I kind of hope this never stops happening in comics, it's just never not funny.

Tbh I get most inspiration from just stuff that goes on in my life and then use that feeling to try and express that on to the character like

Along with that my favorite expression is really just anything with intense crying! There's so much emotion when crying! It could be any type like happy crying, sad crying, mad crying, overwhelmed etc.

I also love to draw nervous expressions, probably why my favorite characters rn are Shang Qinghua and Luo Binghe

ok there are now two dudes in my instgrm dm's making jealous comments about all the attention im lavishing on geno with this sculpt. it was weird enough when it was just one lol. now im concerned.... i thought i was keeping it subtle by only making art update posts without any added commentary. these guys could not handle seeing my blog 😅 this is why we need to keep specifically fandom space as fandom spaces, regular people dont get it even when its watered down as just 'normal' fanart. they don't need to see that fandom level unless they go looking for it. and when im in infatuation mode its really hard for me to regulate the boundary between 'normal' and 'too weird' in my expression of it on different platforms. :(

i guess there is an argument to be made that the 'too weird' blog content shouldnt be shared at all. i do feel less guilty when my crushes are on fictional charaters - books, movies, games, whatever. there's nobody in real life to irritate then. and people recognize that there is a difference between fantasy and reality. but my geno sculpt is a fantasy too - i've turned him into a character and i recognize that. but i think most people would still label that 'too weird'. There's also such a fine line between character and caricature when it comes to real people. i am perpetually terrified of ever doing anything insulting.

edit: i have also never tagged geno in any of my more 'official' updates there. i have seen people who spam tags and i think its rude on super crowded popular social media like that. i will mayyyybe tag him in my hypothetical official finished polished final post. i havent decided yet.

I'm today a bit all over the place but just thinking how, even if Narrator became softer in Bucket versions of the game - i.e.the silly birds in the countdown -, he still has moments about Stanley's death. You still can just dip from cargo lift and he will be like, oopsie, my bad.

They're frenemies, they're both stuck, they're both playful and never enough.

I think what bothers me about ppl being surprised at removing the misogyny or making aang be responsible from the start instead of running away is that this is literally fandom trends representing themselves. Okay I made this to represent a specific event but then I thought about it and realized that more generally soeaking this actually sums the exact dynamic I have with my fourth grade girls.

I road the bus with [name redacted for privacy reasons] who is the apple of my eye #my incredible little girl who I have known for a year who I just adore.#I was taking the bus with her and she saw there was a security camera and asked about it. and it was like a 30 minute bus ride we had time #and I often will teach her about things I’m interested in even if they’re like. advanced right #so I was like alright have you ever heard of a man named Foucault?#i took the next 15 minutes to explain to her about who Foucault was and his essay about the panopticon and what that meant #described was a panopticon was described why he was talking about it talked about how that applies to us now #about how the police state is increasingly harnessing more and more technology to create an era of surveillance hitherto unknown of #and how this helps enforce the status quo etc.#she listened intently. nodding along thoughtfully. she quietly thought about it longer.#the whole time. GLOWERING. which is her response to everything.#I’m like. it’s interesting right? trying to prompt her to say what she was thinking.#instead of responding she just turns to the security camera at the front of the bus and very carefully puts up her middle finger #and then mouths ‘fuck. you.’#I could not be prouder of her but this is also just how all our conversations go #no matter if it’s about tattoos or Ancient Greek tragedy or Taylor swift.
