Before the End 01

That man that came into the craft store was, in a word, massive. More so compared to who normally came into the store. Some visible scarring was on his neck and one cheek, he had dark brown hair and eyes. He had some sort of warm black pants on, and a thick but well fitted bright orange jacket with letters on the back 'PLATFORM 86'. If the jacket was not a giveaway that he worked offshore, that definitely gave it away.

The jacket was opened for him to find and dig out his cell, showing the white letters on the dark shirt under that spelled out 'SECURITY'. It took a few more moments before he could as he was only able to use one hand. Holding a large clear, locking storage tote with the other hand.

"Dad!" A voice called from in the store before he could text. The young woman grinned as she leaned around the corner and held up a decorative pillow with assorted crabs and lobsters on it. "We can have… CRABS!"

The man lost his neutral look as he busted out laughing, "What the hell babygirl?"

"Craaaaaabs!" The young woman vanished behind the aisle.

The tall man rolled his eyes, seeing one of the older women working in the big craft store before waving. "Good afternoon Marsha. Hope she was not this crazy all the time."

"Just sending a lot of pictures and giggling." The worker said fondly, smiling back at the much taller man. Still pretty sure the veteran was over six feet. Or at it?

"You two looking around for a bit before pickup?" Marsha asked as she motioned to the impressive stack of boxes behind and to her left.

"I'll get those after looking around, there's always last minute things," Frederick snorted, wiggling his phone before pocketing it. Then turned his attention to the rough spot his daughter likely was.

"We just put out a lot of clearance yarn!"

"Whoo!" Came from that young woman, echoed by another voice somewhere in the store.

"Lily, did you get a basket for your hoarding?" The man called as he got out of the way of the door belatedly, but it seemed like there were not a lot of people this morning.

"It's not hoarding, I'm shopping with other people's money. And my own. But no basket yet." his daughter called from her spot, sounding distracted.

Frederick rolled his eyes and put the tote in one basket, taking a moment to take the lid off and getting it to sit pretty good in the small cart by wedging it partly. He pushed one cart and on a feeling grabbed a second to take with. He scanned over the season things while passes, smiling at the wall decor and picking up a wooden one.

It was almost just plain wood, but had basic joints he could modify it to move better. Frederick scanned and looked for another one, but just the one lobster.

"You can't sass me if you're getting stuff too, dad," the young woman from before said looking up. The pillow from a few minutes ago back on the shelf but she had a few things in her arms. What looked like dyed twine, as she tried not to reflexively put it in her jacket pockets. She too had the 'PLATFORM 86' on the back, but hers had a hand stitched pattern of a wrench under the letters to patch an old cut.

The jacket was just slightly too big, and zipped up, hiding the lean but working strong form Lily had now that she lost most of her childhood fluff. She also had an old, handmade scarf that once upon a time, years ago was neon, ren mile orange and yellow. Though was now faded a bit it was still bright, just pulled out of the jacket as the young woman was warming up inside.

She had a few bags from one of the other stores tied and sitting on the floor beside her, scooting them along with the side of her boot carefully.

Frederick grinned, holding the large foot and half long, wooden lobster and its odd crusher claw that almost matched, "Becky."

Hazel eyes widened, as Lily suddenly understood, "I didn't think of that, we need paint to make it look like her!"

The man grinned and put it in his cart with the tote, pushing the empty one to his adult daughter. "I have good ideas Lily. Here baby girl, before you drop something."

"Thanks dad," Lily smiled, and her freshly cut, dirty blond hair was ruffled out of the minor styling it got while trying to unload her arms and not drop anything. "Heeey!"

"We already got hay bails for the guinea pigs." Frederick could not help the half dad joke as Lily moved the bags to the cart, part of his mind noticing that the bags looked to have sheets inside. Another part of his attention also took note that one of the store workers had their attention caught in the direction of the front of the store. Yet he did not seem bothered, possibly those seagulls outside finally dive bombed someone for fries or something. "But you do look cute, baby girl. You ended up not getting the new color? I thought you wanted to be purple?"

"Nah, I'll get red or something next time we're on shore." Lily said as she patted her hair back mostly in order. Pausing to hug her dad, even if it had just been a few hours since they had separated. "Did you drop off everything in the truck at the supply ferry?"

"Yep," Frederick nodded as he scanned the aisle for anything interesting, just some marked down candles that he poked at. Lavender was good for lowering stress, right? What else? "The last of the big stuff is locked down, it's just what's on the rest of the personal lists we and Edd's group have, ah, and the hardware store pickup."

Lily lifted her phone, showing a group chat of ten people that had asked her to get some things when on shore, "I let the group chat know I'm at the craft store. And have a few things requested. We have some to-go orders to pick up in an hour at the restaurant next door too."

Frederick leaned over and looked at the offered phone, smiling at the sass he saw. Lots of comments and memes about crabs with knives at the moment, and he recognized names that were all from Lily's mechanics team. Lily was just asking for an updated picture of Becky, the prized blue lobster of the Platform that was actually bred in captivity, but to get the picture a stealthy way. The almost towering man checked his own phone at new pings, and then the two group chats of day and night shift guards on their home platform. "Ah, the night shift just woke up."

"I thought they would have their lists ready a few days ago." Lily noted, starting to lead the way down the aisle to another interesting area as she checked the shopping list.

"There's always last minute things, and I don't think it sank in that I was going to a craft store."

"I still think it's amazing you got those giant scary dudes into crochet," Lily giggled, paused and looked back at the big clear bin in her dad's cart, "Do we have any more of those?"

"Yep, back in the truck," Frederick nodded, relaxing as he followed his daughter's lead in the store. Amused internally that she had picked up his habits of systematically going through a store from front to back, as she was heading to flora next. Not that they got a lot of things back that way but still wanted to be nosey, or it was on a list from someone else. "If need be I can get a few more. They don't mind us in the loading zone once we're done shopping so you can pack totes while I load."

Oscars 2024 thoughts p2. Sharing some thoughts now while the Best Picture nominees are fresh in my mind.

Yesterday: The Holdovers. Today: Poor Things (I avoided major spoilers).

Poor Things

If this movie wins in any major category, I'll be unpleasantly surprised. Barbie definitely has its issues, but for white feminism movies, I like Barbie much better.

This is an entertaining horror comedy based on a sci-fi concept, with a lot of sex.

The high concept of the movie makes me think less of it. I might've loved it if it was called, like, "Bella's Story," and meant to be a story about these characters with potentially universal themes. Instead, it's meant to be about universal themes, with these characters acting out Human Experiences (definitely in capital letters).

I especially don't feel great about "woman experiences the world through having tons of sex" as a story that's meant to have some kind of universality. Everyman characters have a wide breadth of experiences; everywoman characters have a wide breadth of sexual experiences. This is simplistic, but it's my strongest opinion about this film. (NB: I am not that smart.)

As with The Holdovers, though, I did truly enjoy the experience of watching this movie. It is G-R-O-S-S (complimentary) but also has a lot of beauty (pure costume porn; actual porn).

Other than this, I've only see The Lobster by Yorgos Lanthimos, and that's a much more interesting movie (note: major animal harm warning for that one). This one is funny, but I found The Lobster funnier. Both movies have a lot of emotional resonance.

It is kind of cool that such a strange director and movie got major Oscar attention, I guess. But why did that happen, despite this being a genre movie? I liked Nope (2022) and Godzilla Minus One (2023) much better. If the Oscars can recognize this one, why not those?

Like in The Holdovers, the older man in this movie (Godwin, Willem Dafoe's character) reveals his many health issues one by one as a running gag. I still don't like this as a joke, but it fits better here than in The Holdovers. Also, some of Godwin's issues are bizarre fantasy problems that are played for laughs/disgust. When it's revealed he has a real-world problem, the fact that there was this running gag about his health made the reveal much more disturbing. I liked this.

I would need to watch this again for all the "God" jokes to land for me, and although this joke goes into the universality theme that I'm not a huge fan of here, I did like it as a running gag.

Emma Stone's performance is the type that wins Oscars; the movie is about her learning how to be human. But I really, really hope Lily Gladstone (KotFM), who played an ordinary human with so much subtlety and power, wins Best Actress.

It is super weird to me that Mark Ruffalo got nominated for this. He was decent in the role, but still, why? His accent was awkward, too.

Very atmospheric and immersive, but unlike The Holdovers, being immersed in this atmosphere was mostly pretty unpleasant. I mean that as a compliment to both films.

Weirdo sidenote (that I want to mention to my friends when we talk about this movie): the brothel in Poor Things reminded me so much of the Paris house in Babe 2: Pig in the City 😄 Maybe it was a deliberate reference (I don't really think that, but it's very funny to imagine).

I really liked the very ending of the movie. It was the most over-the-top Yorgos Lanthimos thing that happened, I think.

Okay so I have a few backstories that I really enjoy

Red Velvet and Pastry

Bro. Bro the tower of sweet chaos story is my EVERYTHING. I would give ANYTHING to get another glimpse at the machinations of the tower and of the St Pastry Order. Like ughhhh I love the story and the main characters’ stories so much. Both characters are driven by strong (and super relatable!!) morals but they’re both right and wrong at the same time!!!!! Red Velvet is fighting for his beliefs and Pastry is fighting for hers and it’s so interesting because they’re both super morally gray like yes girl!!!! Away with the “good vs evil” schtick!!!! Give me more “neutral vs neutral” please!!!!! I will get more into this in another post so this section is brief yes yes

Strawberry Crepe

Ok this one is entirely based on a theory I read once that basically stated that strawberry crepe was created by white lily when she was attempting to make a cookie. Like yes I would die for that theory it’s so cool and good and wow. Isn’t that fucked up??? Strawberry Crepe being artificially created and then cryogenically frozen for god knows how long bc they supposedly weren’t what white lily was looking for????? What makes it make more sense is the fact that SC even got unfrozen in the first place. You’d think where ever they were in the kingdom would be hidden, but what if DE still knew where they were bc of her time as white lily??????????? This is really funny that I love SC entirely based on a fan theory but like come on you have to admit it makes sense ok.

Aloe

I love me a woman in stem god DAMN. aloe is so cool bc like I love robots so goddamn much and she builds em (I love you ion cookie robot mwah) and that’s cool and neat. That and I LOVE the little tidbit that she was a botanist before being thrust into robotics to save her friend. Like how special is that. To love someone so much that you invest in a career that’s basically the exact opposite from your current one. She went from working with organic life to inorganic bits of wire and metal and code because she loved someone so much and that’s beautiful to me. The world needs more of that I think. I wish more people liked aloe she’s my girl 💕

Lobster and mocha ray

I love these two sm and the sugarteara story fucking smacks. Okay this is mostly about lobster because I LOVE HIM. Like yeah he basically uses a couple kids to get to his end goal but I DONT CARE. he’s so cool and all he ever wanted to restore his home :( I love characters with good intentions that do not great things to reach their goals more than I love myself. AND ITS EVEN SADDER THAT LIKE HE WAS TRICKED INTO DOING THOSE BAD THINGS LIKE AGGDJDJEKEKWPLFN YESSSS GOOD INTENTIONS BAD ACTIONS MY UTTER BELOVED!!!!!! I love her. I love her because she’s so irrevocably, unapologetically bad. She’s rotten to the fucking core and I adore that. Literally the only cookie of darkness who’s ACTUALLY dark.

Dark Choco? Cursed. Licorice? Picked up by DE bc nobody else wanted him. Strawberry Crepe? DE just said “follow me and I’ll let you do whatever the fuck you want.” Poison mushroom and chess Choco twins? Children, probably don’t know anything else other than the hospitality of DE. Lobster? Was promised his home be rebuilt.

Pomegranate? She saw DE in a vision and was like “yeah okay I guess I’ll destroy my village now 😜”

I LOVE THAT ABOUT HER. This young priestess was so trusting in her visions that she saw this once and left EVERYTHING BEHIND to follow it. She destroyed her home literally tore her village apart from the outside in. Her devotion and unwavering confidence in what she believes to be the one true destiny of the world is just…. Ugh I wanna dissect your brain girl. Come lay on my couch and tell me how this all makes you feel. I wanna know what goes on in her head. What a gal. I wish the fandom would be more appreciative of her character rather than of her actions, cause like yeah she’s evil and terrible but I feel like there’s so much more beneath the surface to her. #1 pommy fan kiss kiss

Light of the Sun and Stars chapter 43: The Hand of Fate (Preview)

Summary: His whole life Marco Diaz has been raised by monsters, living under the cruel rule of their leader, Toffee. But one day Marco escapes into Mewni where he meets a magical princess and Mewman like himself, who begins teaching him all about her world. Together they will learn about life, love, and the lights within each of them, as they change their world forever.

A/N: Hi yes I’m still alive!! Sorry this chapter is taking so long, I was sick with Covid in January and everything got delayed and I’ve been having to focus on recovering. I’m doing much better now but my energy levels still aren’t quite what they used to be. Anyways thanks for the patience, hope you enjoy the preview!

Index

The first thing Marco was aware of as he opened his eyes was the fog that clouded his mind. His head felt like it was underwater, his consciousness swimming in and out of reality, making it difficult to focus. It took him a few seconds to even realize he was laying down. He squinted his eyes, his vision unnaturally blurry, like his eyes had forgotten how to work for a brief period of time. Marco off-handedly wondered if he should be concerned about all this but the fear was quickly swallowed by the fog. Marco didn’t move at first, his limbs were too heavy, so instead he just lay and bed and waited for his head to clear. After a good minute, the fuzziness in his brain started to die down and his vision cleared enough for him to get a good look at his surroundings.

That’s when he realized he wasn’t in his bed.

Marco sat up quickly, causing his head to spin again but that was the least of his concerns as he looked around the dark room he had woken up in. The boy panted nervously a few times, his heart hammering against his chest in fear when he realized he knew this room. It was his room at Buff Frog’s cottage. The boy rubbed his eyes a few times, just to make sure he wasn’t seeing things but another quick glance around the silent room confirmed it. He was in the Monster’s cottage.

“How did I…” Marco whispered softly, perplexed by this strange situation. He tried to remember how he could have ended up there but his mind was drawing a blank. He recalled Star and him watching the sunset together like always and Star’s sweet kiss goodnight when they parted ways, his girlfriend turning in early out of exhaustion over the day’s activities. He had hung out with Jackie and Janna for a bit, the two girls teaching him how to play some Earth card game called “poker”, although apparently poking your opponent was not part of the rules. Janna was incredibly good at the game and had beaten both Jackie and him with ease. After that, he had told Daisy and Violet a quick goodnight story before heading to his own bed, tired but satisfied with his day. The last thing he remembered was settling under the warm sheets in his bed at Butterfly Castle.

So how had he gone from there to here. Marco frowned, looking around the room in confusion. That was when something new caught his eye. All his stuff from the castle was here too, as if the situation wasn’t strange enough already. Normally his room at Buff Frog’s place was more or less bare, it was more a glorified place to sleep than anything else, since Marco spent most of his time there with the Monsters. So how had all his stuff been moved there overnight?

Marco realized laying around in bed was not getting him anywhere, he needed to investigate this mystery further. He hopped out of bed and moved over to his open closet, pulling down one of his prized hoodies. He examined it for a moment but couldn’t find anything off about it, as far as he could tell it was the same set of hoodies he normally wore. He slipped it on without a second thought, not caring he was still in his PJ’s underneath. He was starting to get freaked out and needed some sense of comfort, and since Star wasn’t here one of his hoodies would just have to do.

Marco creaked open the door to his room, trying to make as little noise as possible. He looked around the empty hallway for any signs of life but saw nothing out of the ordinary. And yet, something felt off to him, something about this whole thing just wasn’t quite right. It took him a few second to put him finger on it but when it finally came to him, the surrelness of it all left him stumped. It was too quiet. Normally, Buff Frog’s cottage was always full of some kind of chatter between the many Monsters that lived there. At all hours of the day he would always be able to hear Beard Deer and Lobster Claws arguing about something or Big Chicken’s clucking or Bearicorn’s atrocious singing, not even the loud snoring of Potato Baby as he went about his day. But now there was nothing. Just silence. And it unnerved Marco.

But then as if some force of the universe had read his mind, his ears picked up a small sound echoing through the barren hallway. Humming. Someone was humming. And from the sound of it, it was a woman’s voice. Now Marco’s interest was thoroughly peaked and his need to investigate won over his growing anxiety instantly. Taking a deep, calming breath, Marco ventured out into the hallway, slowly tip-toeing in the direction he thought the humming was coming from.

From what he could tell, it seemed like it was coming from downstairs and Marco tried to quietly creep that way. But to his surprise, he picked up on something he had missed before. The hallway was smaller somehow. Before, Buff Frog and the Monsters had made enough rooms so that any Monster who wanted one could have one. But now the hallway had been shortened and the number of rooms cut down significantly. There were only four rooms upstairs now, counting his, and Marco was beginning to wonder if he was still dreaming. It certainly would make more sense than his dad’s house being reconstructed overnight. Marco slowly descended the staircase, his thoughts and heartbeat racing with each step.

The humming grew louder and he tried to place a face with the voice but his mind was drawing a blank. It was clearly a woman’s voice and something about the tone reminded him of Lily when she was putting Daisy and Violet to bed. There was something instantly soothing about the simplistic melody, almost like… he had heard it before? The woman’s voice as well, was oddly familiar, some distant memory tugging at the back of his mind although he couldn’t quite see it yet.

He reached the final step of the staircase and gazed over to the kitchen, finally spotting the source of the humming. A woman stood by the oven, her back to him as she fiddled with sizzling pans full of delicious smelling food, her hands working quickly to cook the meal. Marco could only stare at her in shock, wondering why and how some strange woman had snuck into his dad’s home to cook breakfast. His head spun with questions as he wondered what the right course of action was here, he had never been taught what to do in this kind of situation.

So he did the first thing that came to mind, he spoke to her. “Hello?” he called in a tiny voice which shook from nerves and confusion.

The woman stopped what she was doing and slowly turned to face him. Marco could see the confusion in her eyes before a warm smile widened on her face as she spotted him. There was a small flash of recognition there, although Marco couldn’t say the same since he was still sure he had never seen this person in his entire life. Although, some deeper part of his mind seemed to be trying to tell him something though he had yet to determine what as it fought to escape the fog.

“Good morning, Marco. Did you sleep well?” the woman said as she cleaned her hands on the fancy apron she was wearing, her tone bright and she spoke with a level of familiarity that sent Marco’s head spinning.

“Do I… know you?” the hooded teen asked, an eyebrow slowly raising. Those words must have triggered something because he felt the memory fight harder to free itself, but the fog clung tightly and refused to let go.

The woman seemed surprised by this response, her head cocking to the side to observe him and her eyebrows pinching together in worry. “What do you mean, sweetie?” she asked.

Sweetie, Marco thought, now feeling even more confused. And the memory fought harder. Marco tried to ignore the battle going on in his brain as he asked, “Did my dad hire you or something?”

The woman laughed at this, her voice light and achingly familiar and it made Marco’s heart clench for reasons his mind had yet to decipher. “Marco, you aren’t making any sense,” she said and her eyes shined with some form of affection that felt completely foreign to Marco. “Is this some kind of game?”

Marco felt the memory strain to get free, tearing at the fog as it tried to push itself to the front of his mind. He opened his mouth to reply but the word froze there, he was too confused to speak. Some part of him told him to observe the woman and he began to pick up on small details, auburn hair, green eyes, pink cheekmarks. Okay that’s a good starting point, he told himself. Now focus on those things.

Her hair was tied back in a loose ponytail but it did little to stop the unruly curls. Her eyes were warm and inviting and some deep part of him seemed to recognize the stare. Her stare. And her cheekmarks were-

The fog finally broke under the weight of the memory as realization hit him like a ton of bricks. No, it couldn't be, he told himself, unable to believe who was standing before him. He nearly chocked on a sob as he managed to say in a small, broken voice the word he had been longing to say his entire life.

“Mom!”

DOOM Prompt 09: Tall

A writing prompt from my doom discord, tied into the Garnets story. This takes place early in the story, before Valen comes.

Lily is smol (compared to John...and the Argenta made Fortress... lol).

9: “John chuckling as he makes stools for Lily, while she sits (or paces) in a corner muttering about tall people”

“...this…” Lily squinted at the counter that she was almost eye level with, “Is really unfair.”

Okay so it was not really eye level but it really felt like it might as well be.

The young woman tucked her arms a little more firmly against herself, in the snug sling-vest that was made for her. There was no doubt, this was a full on pout as there was a low chuffing like chuckle from behind her. Lily turned and made a face as she turned around to try and glare, but really.

It was hard to glare when you meant to do it while still on the lingering effects of Argenta meds. Then easier to glare at the floor when you were just relaxed and zoning out. “Rude.”

The Slayer, or ‘John’ as he allowed as a temporary name, still smiled as he followed Lily around the kitchen area. As if amused at her somewhat unsteady progress to look around. Not at all seeming like she was aware of her grumblings about all the tall people and alien people, and why did she have to be short?

The considerably taller Demigod followed after. A bemused expression as if he was not quite sure what to think of this new awake, if maybe not fully aware addition to his Fortress of Doom. The only other living thing in his old flag ship.

Well, there were the small animales now, but it was not the same as listening to another person being just… alive.

Lily had to stop almost every twenty feet, seemingly dosing on her feet and letting ‘John’ come up behind her. Checking that she was not going to actually fall asleep. She made it two rounds around the Argenta kitchen before pausing then turned around. The young woman grunted as she ran headlong into the solid wall that was John’s lower ribs and chest.

She squinted at the green shirt he had on, aware of large arms lifting to frame either side in case Lily fell. There was a much bigger waver, and if not for the large hand on her back, Lily might have dropped. “...I give up. I can’t tell where the sink is.”

Lily dropped her shoulders and thumped her head against the thick bicep nearer her. She made a frustrated sound, because the human was finally realizing how thirsty she was.

A low rumble had her trying to look up. Those eerie blue eyes of John’s looked amused, then clearly were as Lily could only razzberry up at him half heartedly. A calloused hand lifted to cup against her head before he slowly signed out a question. Want help?

“...yes please.” Lily said after staring for a second too long. An undignifeid squeak came out of Lily next as she was seemingly effortlessly picked up, trying to get her arms out of the sling-vest before John was moving several strides to his right, and set the girl up on the tall counter.

He reached out to grab one of the wide mugs he had unpacked from the Platform. It was cup he set here because of the name on the bottom 'L. Hawkins' that suggested it belonged to Lily. That’s what he filled halfway with water and offered to the human.

Lily made a surprised, soft sound as she paused, getting her arms somewhat free. Somewhere between a sad sound and relief. Staring at the sunflower yellow swirling on the mug, turning it around to fit her hand in the big handle. Letting John see the painted on animal, he asked Vega and it was something called a ‘lobster’ that was half a rusty red color, half copper color. “Thank you.”

John touched the fingers of his right hand to his chin and swung that arm down. Welcome.

The demigod considered the kitching as he rested his back against the counter beside Lily. Thinking as he looked at her next, then down to the floor. A large hand lifted, hesitated before touching Lily’s leg, having to sign slowly for her to keep up. Flower stay here. Getting something.

“Okay?” Lily blinked, having no trouble with sitting in the same spot to just sip water. She wondered where in the kitchen the cider packets were. That would be a nice comfort worth having right then.

The demigod came back into the kitchen with several things he set down. Pausing and stared at the odd sight, snorted and gave a rasping bark of a laugh.

“Don’t judge me.” Lily demanded from her slightly new spot. She had scooted over and swung her legs around so she was sitting on the edge of the deep sink. Her slippers were off and beside her on the counter, with Lily’s feet in the sink and paused in reaching to fill her mug with warm water coming out.

There was one of the odd boxes with what looked like tea beside her as John came over. He set the things down beside the counter, making two more trips and finished breaking down one of the broken benches. Remembering the improvised steps on the Platform just a few weeks ago, he sat down to start working on…

“...is that a step?” Lily asked, watching him, eyes widening as she hugged her mug of very warm cider.

“Hm.” The demigod hummed in agreement. Finishing the first step, and sorting out the second step, not too big to get in his way but would let the human freely get water as she needed when he left again. It took some time, but when he got up and carefully placed a foot on each step to make sure it would hold, it did. Maybe would not hold his full weight, but it should be plenty for his small human.

“Try,” Lily said as John looked up at her for approval, the girl grinning at him as she offered the big mug to her savior.

The startled sound John made at tasting apple cider for the first time was satisfying, and Lily did not mind sharing her stash as a thank you. Even making him a nice hot mug of it after he started another set of stools for her to be placed around in the Argenta sized kitchen.

In order to avoid having to go to parties, Maddie makes up a fake Scottish fiancé and writes letters to him for years. Logan just so happens to have the same name as her fake fiancé, and he receives all those letters. He uses them to blackmail her into REAL marrying him. Also she has pet lobsters and spends the whole book waiting for them to Mate.

Review

Most of the time when a romance novel wants you to think that the love interest is a Top, Like, You Know, A Real Manly Man Who Takes Control, he’s just really bad at sex. He grabs the tiny little woman and sticks her on his massive dick and she comes immediately or whatever. But this time!! The man was a feminist and he topped her right. He made sure she enjoyed it and that’s why I didn’t actually think that he was waiting for the right moment for her to take control and cure him of his man problems and repression. When she did top him eventually, it was just switching. I’m so proud of them.

Anyway the plot and the characters and stuff. They were fun! Maddie had goals and career dreams and her obsession with lobsters added the most important subplot (the subplot about the lobsters). Logan’s tragic backstory and commitment issues had so many causes that came up all the time and added spice! The interpersonal drama was realistic and I actually liked the characters! This is the bare minimum but you know what! They met it!

But eventually there wasn’t enough drama, once they resolved everything. I feel like this book needed some murder. Logan was an army captain surrounded by his soldiers, but at no point did they have to defend their land from evil British landlords plotting to oppress the people! At no point did they show their Manly Man Violence Skills! At no point did Maddie pick up a knife or something and demonstrate that she was strong and didn’t need to be saved!! I had expectations based on the setup and they were not met! God.

But I can forgive all of that because Logan hated the British. Fuck English people! Logan can blackmail whoever he wants.

He called her “my heart” in Gaelic which was cute. She called him various nicknames starting with Mac (MacSmirky, MacPillow, MacJackass, MacFantasy) which was funny but reminded me too much of Grey’s Anatomy.

Notes: This book made me look up lobster porn and I will never forgive Tessa Dare for that.

BIOGRAPHY.

Lily Chang and Chuck Martin had no business falling in love, but in the early 90′s at a karaoke bar in Somerton, Maine - that was precisely what happened. The relationship was doomed from the start -- a walking dad joke wrapped in a sweater vest and woman strung higher than her up-do would have very little in common once the thrill of young love wore off -- but hindsight is a fickle thing, and youth has a funny way of blinding what is right in front of your eyes. It wasn’t long after the first meeting that the couple would find themselves married, and then welcoming a daughter into the world who would someday serve as the only proof the two ever got along.

Still, compatibility issues aside, her parents gave it a real go and for the first seven years of her life, Robin had a real family. Family dinners around the table, Saturday morning cartoons with her dad, and road trips to her mother’s favorite East Coast landmarks. But the facade could only last so long and so the summer before she was meant to start the second grade at Grant Elementary, her parents made the difficult decision to call it quits. Looking back at it through adult eyes, Robin would see the cracks in the foundation -- the petty fights and cold silences that seemed to rule their household -- but at seven years old sitting on a chair staring down at skinned knees listening to the two people she trusted the most tell her their little family was breaking up she felt her whole world crumble around her. It just wasn’t fair! Despite loud protests and heartfelt pleas, by the end of the week Robin found herself packing up her bedroom and leaving the only home she’d ever known in favor of moving west with her mother who had secured a job at the University of British Columbia.

From that point on her childhood felt divided -- splitting time between her parents' homes on opposite coasts. Summers spent eating lobster and laughing at her dad’s dumb jokes in Maine and forced ski lessons with her mom when what she really wanted to do was snowboard back in BC. And for a time, it was manageable. But everyone has a breaking point, and for Robin that was puberty.

It seemed to happen overnight. The status quo shifted -- one day mother and daughter were compromising about take away order and the next they couldn’t agree on anything. And just like that, their small condo became a battleground. Something about hormones and teen angst seems to cause friction between mothers and their daughters and Robin was no exception to this cliche. As she grew the realities of her childhood set in and Robin became bitter, pinning an unfair bulk of the blame on her mother and this expressed itself through a rebellious streak come high school. Once a straight-A student, Robin was now skipping classes to smoke under the bleachers and stealing bottles from the liquor cabinet to go drink with her friends in the park. It was clear her mom was in over her head, and with all modes of communication closed off she felt had no options left but to send Robin back to Somerton to live full time with her dad and though Robin agreed it was what she wanted, deep down it really hurt. She felt like her mom given up on her and it’s a wound their relationship hasn’t ever recovered from.

Adjusting to a new school at sixteen was difficult -- most cliques had been solidified, friendships formed over a lifetime and Robin felt there was little room for her to insert herself and with the bulk of her support group living on the other side of the continent, those first few months were a bit isolating. But eventually, Robin found her footing. She made some friends, slowed down on the partying and found solace in art and music.

As with most things in her life, when it came to secondary education, Robin chose the easiest path. She went to Somerton University because it was close and despite her dodgy school records they accepted her, majored in graphic design because it was easy and she liked computers and forwent dorm living in favor of renting her dad’s basement apartment because it was familiar.

Robin lived in that apartment until she was twenty-four when her dad got remarried. She’d saved enough living there to have a sizeable safety net and she wanted to give the new couple some space. She loved her dad but didn’t want to risk the emotional scarring of walking in on him and his new wife canoodling. Despite initial reservations, Robin bonded pretty quickly with her new stepmother and her four-year-old son.

Now that Robin works a stable 9 to 5 she has less time to get into trouble -- but between being a proud dog mom, Sunday dinners with the family and watching her little brother once a week to give her parents a break she manages to find some time. Of course, today trouble looks more like running a semi-famous comic on the internet based on her dogs Timon and Pumba which anthropomorphizes her little beans and sees them maneuvering life’s everyday problems, usually with humorous results.
