People of tumblr, I have but one question for you:
How do you call on cats in your language(s)?
I’ll go first - čičičiči (though sometimes it blends into merely čččč) in Czech🇨🇿

Linguistics of Tumblr,
What if the Korean and Scottish Gaelic Languages mixed?
This is for my own curiosity, cause I'm doing like fantasy roleplay story thing and one of the Nations in this Story is like a mix between Scotland and the Korean Empire and kind of want to make a fantasy Language, so I was wondering what will a mix of these Languages sound like?

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.

English int. goodbye, good-bye, goodby, good-by 'a phrase used to express good wishes when parting at the end of a conversation' (also in derived n. 'an instance of saying goodbye'; from the 1600s in goodby and 1700s in goodbye) is from a shortening of earlier Early Modern English int. goodbuy, goodbuy'ye, goodb'w'y(e 'id.' (forms in -buy of later secondhand association with English v. buy 'to purchase, obtain by exchange; to redeem, accept', of heavy influence to the pronunciation of the second syllable), from the forms in Early Middle English int. godb'y(e, godbuy, godbuy'ye, godb'w'y(e, godbwy(e 'id.' (forms in -buy show association with buy, as above; the change from god- to good- is by secondary association with English int. good day 'an expression of general good wishes', good night, goodnight 'a customary expression of parting in the evenings or before going to bed', etc.), colloquial shortening of Early Modern English int. god be with you, plur. god be with ye 'id.' (as a parting phrase, from the late 15th century; the -ye in some forms above probably shows a merger of the plural and a colloquial form of the singular; shortening of with can be seen in early form god be wy you; many early forms used abbreviatory apostrophes).
TL;DR: goodbye is a shortening, with influence from buy and phrases like good day, of the parting expression god be with you.

Because there's an eclipse, in latin class my teacher had us translate all these old Roman dudes thoughts and shit on eclipses and incase you didn't know they filled a basin with oil or tar so they could see the reflection of the eclipse and study it, or just watch it like normal because they were also obsessed like we are

Pronouns, my beloved!
Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
Tumblr media
นี่คุณจะไม่เลือกผมจริง ๆ ใช่ไหม /nee, khun ja mai leuuak pom jing jing chai mai?/
-> คุณ /khun/ = polite, formal 2nd pers. pronoun -> ผม /pom/ = polite, formal, respectful male 1st pers. pronoun
As Mahasamut is the younger one, he might just keep using ผม /pom/ throughout the entire show, just as Sky did in LITA. What he calls Tongrak is surely gonna change though! คุณ /khun/ feels too distant for P'May characters - even LomNuea in Wedding Plan, who met in a professional context and long kept using คุณ /khun/, ended up switching to the more familiar and informal พี่ /phi/ to refer to Lom.
So my predictions include:
a variation on his name, e.g. Rak, instead of any pronoun (like Prapai calling Sky just Sky, no pronouns), or later down the line maybe just ที่รัก /thee rak/ (= lit. beloved, comparable to darling, honey etc.) as it's sweet and would be a lovely switcheroo from Tongrak ต้องรัก /dtawng rak/ (= have to love)
a more intimate pronoun like เธอ /ter/ (based on YiwaMarine from Wedding Plan foregoing seniority by having younger Rine call her older girlfriend เธอ /ter/ for most of the show)
or simply พี่ /phi/ (as a 2nd pers. pronoun) which- I was just considering how that might not be sweet enough for a P'May top but then the sheer potential of P'Rak พี่รัก /phi rak/ sounding so close to ที่รัก /thee rak/ occurred to me and now I'm gonna need that to happen!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ต่อให้ผู้ชายทั้งโลกเหลือแค่นายคนเดียวอะ ฉัน ก็ ไม่ เอา /dtaaw hai phuu chaai thang lohk leuua khaae naai khohn diiao a- chan. gaaw. mai. ao./)
-> นาย /naai/ = informal male 2nd pers. pronoun (it's kind of filed away as the male equivalent to เธอ /ter/ in my head, even though เธอ /ter/ is perfectly usable regardless of gender but might sound too flirty to Tongrak, maybe?) -> ฉัน /chan/ = informal, familiar 1st pers. pronoun, not respectful or polite but also not impolite; used when speaking to someone younger/of lower status or between equals, is used predominantly by women, and in turn by men when talking to women
I love this choice so much! 1) Because both ฉัน /chan/ and นาย /naai/ rarely make an appearance in BL, from male characters, even though they delight me every time I do hear it in a BL (e.g. NuerSyn in Cutie Pie calling each other นาย /naai/ for a good long while), and 2) because ฉัน /chan/ can give both Mafia Boss (as can นาย /naai/) as well as Sassy and no, I shan't elaborate 5555
My prediction is that these too might change. ฉัน /chan/ here feels like- attitude? almost? Like both a level of self-confidence as well as some sass so I'd wager that mellows out into:
พี่ /phi/ (as a 1st pers. pronoun)
or he might just as well keep using ฉัน /chan/ (if paired with เธอ /ter/ for example that's like prime romance trope right there lol)
or, which I think is most likely, he'll just use his own name or variation thereof, e.g. Rak.
I remember seeing Peat tweet something aaaages ago when the announcement for Love Sea first dropped where he called Fort 'Mut' -
Tumblr media
/diiao juuhr gan loei, ai moot/ = See you then, Ai'Mut!
Except this is spelled differently from Mahasamut's name because หมุด /moot/ (= pin/needle) is the phonemic spelling of the last syllable in มหาสมุทร /ma haa sa moot/. So! I think it's entirely possible that Tongrak's gonna call him Mut หมุด or Nong Mut น้องหมุด in the future.
Tumblr media
คุณต้องรักมหาสมุทร /khun dtawng rak mahaa samoot/
= Khun Tongrak Mahasamut = You have to love the ocean. = You have to love me.
The Thai title is ต้องรักมหาสมุทร /dtawng rak mahaa samoot/ = TongrakMahasamut; Gotta Love the Sea; Gotta Love Mahasamut

So I'm a Science Spider, not a Language Spider. Trying to make a motto for emails and such that means: "Knowledge is power, and with great power, there must also come great responsibility." Google says: "Scientia potentia est et cum potentia magna venit magnus responsabilitate", should work. But I don't know enough Latin syntax to confirm and my searches about it are confusing. Are there any Latin enthusiasts on here?

overheard someone saying "bjir" in real life
okay first indonesian context. sorry to any indos reading this if this has mistakes. bjir is a misspelling of njir. which is a shortenend form of anjir which comes from "anjing", the word for dog.
njir is an interjection word that is similar to "fuck". its a curse word of the same level of informality. depending on the context it can also mean "holy fuck" like when you see something cool.
anyways whats important is that, "bjir" is a keyboard misspelling of "njir". its misspelled this way because n and b is next to each other on the prevalent qwerty layout. and the interesting part to me is that it is said out loud.
could keyboard misspelling be something that could start sounds changes? sound changes that never happened before? because the person wouldnt have said that naturally without keyboard misspelling right? b and n are like phonologically opposites. hmmm

Dang, I thought YRZ's Reed persona just looks scholarly or somewhere along those lines. It must look weird seeing Val obsess over a guy who looks like they just gotten out of bed after studying for two days straight.
oh it's for sure fucking weird. yeah the yrz we know in bfiasc is a good little lan clan disciple which means following aesthetic rules like being clean and neat lol. on his own, yrz is -- not really a slob, but more of a controlled chaos type of person. so long as he knows where everything is and his health isn't in danger, he has better things to do than cleaning. much like cooking, grooming is to the healthy bare minimum.
he, also, does not care what other people think about him unless they're his close friends (very rare) already or they're paying him. so he'll be professional but otherwise its casual and comfortable for him.
(it causes val physical pain to see yrz not taking care of himself btw. yrz thinks it's funny to show up randomly and watch val try to aggressively shove him into something better or stop what he's doing to force yrz on a mandatory shopping spree. hey, yrz isnt' going to turn down free shit.)

A pair of my sims on my legacy finally tied the knot, and in celebration I made them an entire posepack of (pretty spicey) poses for them. I'm very pleased with them. :) These are marked as mature b/c there are some poses including that are extra saucey.
.
Feeling Frisky 2 comes with:
10 Couple Poses for a Double Bed!
Do note that a majority of the poses will require the double bed not to have anything blocking the foot of the bed. I used one of the beds from Island Living, and one from Seasons to takes these screenshots.
To use Feeling Frisky 2 you will need: Andrew’s Pose Player and the Teleport Any Sim mod
TOU: don’t be a greedy jackass and try to make money off the shit I make.
