Plankton may be tiny, but they play an important role in the ocean. As the foundation of marine ecosystems, they support ocean food webs and help regulate Earth's climate by storing carbon. While lab studies have shown plankton can adjust their chemistry in response to environmental changes, a new global study reveals how these adaptations occur in the real ocean. The study will be published on May 23, 2025, in the journal Science Advances. Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), reanalyzed massive datasets of large-scale distributions of plankton-derived lipids in the ocean, which were initially published by WHOI in 2022. "This study shows the value of open science," says first author Dr. Weimin Liu from MARUM. "Using new methods on open-access data, we uncovered previously hidden patterns of plankton adaptation."

Exploring the Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi body (inside the cell) receives proteins and lipids from the endoplasmic reticulum, modifies them by adding sugar molecules (glycosylation), sorts them, and then packages them into vesicles for transport to their final destinations—whether that be within the cell or exported outside.
The Golgi body, often referred to as the cell’s "post office" plays a crucial role in processing and packaging proteins and lipids.

Another milestone in my scientific journey
I submitted my very first article as the last corresponding author.
This means I take responsibility for every single word and all data and findings in the manuscript. It feels big.
Keep your fingers crossed!

Lipids, or fats, are essential to life. They form the membranes around cells, protecting them from the outside. In nature, there is an enormous diversity of lipids, with each organism having its own unique combination. But what are the minimum lipid requirements for a cell to survive? A research team at the B CUBE–Center for Molecular Bioengineering at TUD Dresden University of Technology showed that cells can function with just two lipids. They created a cell with a minimal, adaptable membrane, offering a unique platform to study how lipid complexity evolved and how it can be engineered for synthetic life. Their findings are published in Nature Communications.

First, DAMN, I loved this movie, and need to see it again. Second, I've never seen my headcanon on why the vampires have such dry terrible hair discussed anywhere, and THIS IS MY CHANCE.
Why do the vampires have such terrible dry hair? Because they live on blood, and as such have a diet very poor in lipids.
Anyway, there you go. Why vampires have an apparent aversion to deep conditioners I have no idea.

Lipid rafts are specialized microdomains within the plasma membrane, rich in cholesterol and sphingolipids, that play a critical role in organizing cellular processes. These dynamic structures act as platforms for signaling molecules, facilitating key functions such as immune responses, cell communication, and membrane trafficking.
Recent research has revealed the importance of lipid rafts in various diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and viral infections. Understanding how lipid rafts organize and modulate cellular activities opens up new possibilities for targeted therapies that could disrupt or harness these microdomains to treat diseases more effectively. As studies on lipid rafts advance, they are proving to be essential components of the plasma membrane's complex architecture and function.

The presence of parasitic microbes has for the first time been found literally altering the metabolism of their hosts. The culprits are tiny, parasitic archaea of the species Candidatus Nanohaloarchaeum antarcticus that parasitize other single-celled organisms, the host archaeon species Halorubrum lacusprofundi. And researchers have found that these parasites are very selective about the resources they steal from the body of their host.
