Watched Rear Window last week. Went a little overboard on what was supposed to be a simple expression/design study.

Only a southern would have come up with the true and right idea that the Riverland are just Appalachia. Ned and cats sham of a wedding (at the start! Marrying for an army etc) is thematically coherent to all those brother going to the train station with shotguns to make sure the new brother in law made it to the chapel on time (what my great uncles did to my great grandfather when he got my greatgrandma pregnant)

the riverlands are this sprawling yet isolated liminal space where everything happens yet nothing ever seems to really change or move forward in time, 80 year old interpersonal grudges may as well be from yesterday, everyone is obsessed with following and/or breaking a complex unspoken set of social rules revolving around putting on a good face and treating guests right, people deride it and yet once they’re there can never seem to truly leave or stop themselves from being drawn back in, and where a core pillar of society is Going Down To The River and i’m supposed to NOT recognize it as the South??? it is to ME

Signings Galore

It's not just the men's first team bringing in the new recruits...

Elizabeth Terland - Striker

Terland is a free signing from Brighton and Hove Albion, and a much needed reinforcement to the centre forward position. 17 goals and 1 assist in 35 appearances last season would be a very welcome addition to our goal output, and at 23 there's still a lot of time for development from the Norwegian.

Melvine Malard - Striker/Wing Forward

The loanee from Lyon had a great impact as a striker and left wing forward last season. Many of us hoped we'd make this a permanent move, and I'm so relieved we have. Like Geyse she has bundles of technical skill, as well as a nice balance and sense of timing to be able to use both feet and her head on goal.

At 24, Malard has her best years ahead of her, and hopefully leading United to success.

Dominique Janssen - Centre Back

The Dutch international has moved from Wolfsburg to join United as a new, more senior centre back choice for Marc Skinner.

29 year old Janssen spent four years in England with Arsenal, before moving to Wolfsburg in 2019. She has 112 caps for the Netherlands, won Euro 2017, and has played in the women's Champions League final twice with Wolfsburg - losing to Lyon and Barcelona respectively.

Anna Sandberg - Left Back/Left Wing

This is my personal favourite signing of the bunch. 21 year old Anna Sandberg of BK Hacken. The roving left back / wing back / left wing offers some strong offense down that side, similar to Jayde Riviere on the right. She's pacey and tenacious, and dovetailed with Gabby George's physicality and composure will offer Skinner genuine LB options this year rather than the make-do approach of RB Hannah Blundell.

Simi Awujo - Centre Midfield

The youngest signing of the bunch so far, Canadian international Simi Awujo is just 20 years old. This is her first professional contract, a three year deal, having just left USC Trojans - the University of Southern California women's side - a year before graduation.

The defensive midfielder has made 19 appearances for Canada in two years, and is a promising prospect for the future. With United losing both captain Katie Zelem and Irene Guerrero, a new DM/6 is very welcome and guaranteed gametime. On paper you'd think a double pivot with Lisa Naalsund is the immediate option, but with the likes of Grace Clinton and Emma Watson back... there are options.

Beyond these five there are rumours about Leicester goalkeeper Lize Kop. The Dutch keeper has two years left on her deal, and it's an odd one - United paid good money for Phallon Tullis-Joyce. She played well in the Conti Cup last season. Surely she's our number 1 now with Mary Earps gone? She deserves a shot at it.

Wouldn't surprise me to bring someone else in though, use them, and lost PTJ next summer. INEOS are so focused on the men's team and the Old Trafford rebuild that the women's team might be getting overlooked. I'll do a post after the Community Shield match review about Dan Ashworth's recent meeting with the women at St George's Park.

Why do we refer to Alicent as a Hightower? Once she's married, didn't she become a Targaryen? Shouldn't she be called Alicent Targaryen ?

Okay so this is the consequence of the fact that none of the nobility or royalty in Westeros have actual last names the way that we understand them. Colloquially, nobles and royalty are often referred to as [first name] + [House name] (Alicent Hightower, Rhaenyra Targaryen, etc.) which makes it seem like the House names are last names. But they’re not actually, they’re titles. Kind of like how none of the British royal family have last names, just first names. And titles behave a bit differently from legal last names. Married women have equal claim to the House they were born into and the House they married into, and so can refer to themselves as either or. And they certainly don't seem to HAVE to give up their maiden name, no matter who they marry.

It’s entirely possible for people to claim multiple Houses in formal occasions. For example, Tommen Baratheon is referred to as “Tommen of Houses Baratheon and Lannister” during his coronation. But colloquially people only use one at a time. Married women usually have a preference for one or the other. There are examples galore of both options here. Olenna Tyrell and Lisa Arryn always go by their married names; Sansa Stark, Rhaenys Targaryen, and Cersei Lannister all go by their maiden names. Some women might use the two interchangeably, depending on their circumstances: Catelyn might refer to herself as Catelyn Tully while in the Riverlands, but Catelyn Stark while in the North.

Whether the married or maiden name is used comes down to a variety of factors, such as the statuses of the two Houses, the women’s sentiments towards the two Houses, and how deeply the women assimilate into the culture/family of their married House. When a woman is colloquially referred to by her maiden name, it is usually meant to reflect that she is perceived as rejecting the family she married into in favor of her original family. Alicent holds more closely to things associated with the Hightowers, such as the Faith of the Seven, and is largely derided by Team Black for being an “outsider” within House Targaryen. But this is only the case for informal labels.

Now, this flexibility does not extend to the formal titles of these women. When using their formal titles, they must use their married name. This is because there is only one “Lady X” at any given time, and it is a title reserved for the wife of the corresponding “Lord X.” This is true for men as well, by the way: Laenor was never “Lord Velaryon” because Corlys was “Lord Velaryon,” and only one person can hold the title at a time. So for example, Alicent wouldn’t be called “Lady Hightower,” even if she wasn’t married to a King, because the only Lady Hightower is the wife of Lord Ormund Hightower (who is also the only Lord Hightower). This is also why Rhaenys Targaryen is referred to as Lady Velaryon and never as Lady Targaryen.

As for Alicent, she's a bit unique because she married into the royal family in particular. Since royalty needs to feel important, they get their own rules that are a bit different from the rest of the nobility. The only ones with a claim to the name Targaryen are those born to a man with that name. The title of Queen is never attached to a specific House. Alicent’s formal title isn’t “Queen Targaryen,” nor is it “Queen Hightower,” it is simply “Queen Alicent.” But even if she'd married a Lord, she could very well still be known by the name Hightower.

Match Review: Manchester United Women 3-1 Leicester City Women

3 wins in 3 from the United ladies in the Conti Cup, and the Reds keep marching on.

It's never an easy tie against Leicester City, but United kept up their hot streak of form to make it a comfortable win in the end.

First half goals from Lucia Garcia and Lisa Naalsund had United comfortable, but a dangerous pass from keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce out to captain Katie Zelem saw the England international pressed into a bad touch and robbed of the ball by Aileen Whelan, whose lobbed finish got the Foxes back in the game.

United focused up in the second half and Brazilian wonder Geyse was brought down in the box after some darting wide play into the box, with captain Zelem atoning for the earlier mistake by coolly finishing the subsequent penalty.

Zelem could have had two, with another penalty later on in the half, but the crossbar and goalie Leitzig stopped her effort and the rebound from Melvine Malard.

United's final game is away to Manchester City Women at the Joie Stadium on Wednesday 24th January. Top spot will guarantee the girls a bye to the Quarter Finals with the other group winners and seeded Chelsea (due to their Champions League involvement) and then the final two spots will be given to the best group runners-up.

But who will be in the QFs?

In Group A, Aston Villa are all but confirmed, and Sunderland are a decent second place. Durham are in third place tied on points with Sunderland but lack goal difference. They need Villa to absolutely snot the Black Cats to sneak into 2nd and even then, that'll probably be too weak to qualify vs the other groups. Alternatively, Sunderland could cause an upset and win and steal top spot, leaving Villa a strong candidate for the second place route in.

Group B is our lot. United just need a draw to stay top and guarantee our place. City need a win for top. City only need a draw to bag second though, whilst Leicester need to beat Everton and United to beat City. City's points are also good enough that second probably gets them into the quarters.

To keep things interesting Group C is wide open, with Palace vs London City and Watford vs Lewes both able to see any of the sides progress.

Group D is led by Arsenal, with a final game against Reading that should be a formality. Spurs though, they take on Southampton - both of whom are vying for first and second spots...

The final group, Group E, is topped by Brighton and Hove Albion. Charlton are second, and the pair face off to finish, while West Ham have an easier game (on paper) against last place Birmingham City - though maybe they fight for pride and cause an upset...

All we do know is that it will be an exciting January for women's football fans!
