now that i’m fully caught up on the demon slayer anime (not the manga, gonna start reading it soon) I have to say that i really like it. The characters are all likable which is great because so many shows have characters i just can’t stand.

The art style is beautiful. The animation is amazing. The storyline is great. I mean it’s shonen through and through but I love it. I think I’ll always watch shonen but it’s been so draining lately because I feel like anime studios are just churning that out and I wish they would branch out with different genres. But either way, I really like Demon Slayer.

Rewatching Haikyuu from the beginning bc I never got to watch S4 and it’s been a few years.

Kenna has a big fat crush on Hinata and it’s very cute, even though I ship him more with Kageyama. I keep thinking Kenma would be a cute high school boyfriend, and they’d break up on good terms and stay friends. Plus, let’s be honest, Hinata and Kageyama are so dumb about each other they’d take ages to even realize they have feelings.

Probably they’ll end up playing different teams in college and working opposite each other again just won’t feel the same 😔 but the competitive spirit! 🔥 Then they’ll end up teammates again representing Japan in the Olympics or something and only when figuring out how to work together again will somebody else point out to them that they’re actually stupid and in love. "Yeah, that's—It's something that... I always love being aggressive and fighting, and stuff like that. So I was always drawn towards these guys—Growing up, watching the tough guys, you watched Don Cherry; my favourite part was always the fighting and the big hitting, and stuff like that. Once I turned pro—every tough guy I played with—I would ask to drop the gloves and for them to show me something.

Whether it's something they always do, something they don't want a small guy like me to do to them...just picking up tips from every single one of them. Huge shoutout to those guys! I played with a lot of tough guys, especially in the American League, and every one of them showed me something that I carry with me to this day.

Right to the first guy: [...] in my Stockton days. He was a Toronto legend growing up where I grew up. He was my stall-mate, he's such a badass, cool dude. I remember dropping the gloves with him in practise, and asking him to show me some things. I'm always trying to learn, and do different things.

When I first started fighting although I asked for—to show me... it's not too comparable because our fighting styles are a little bit different; he fights a different caliber-type of fighter than I do. When I first started fighting I was more a straight defensive fighter—you know, you hold on and when you see an opportunity you punch, and other than that it's a pretty boring fight. And then as you get more comfortable and you start to learn a little bit more—get punched in the face a couple times and realise, you know, it doesn't hurt all that much...then you can start to try new things. I still remember the first time I ever threw a left punch in a fight! Definitely a lot of trial and error...

Jamie Devane, specifically—actually, I remember I got in a fight...Jarred Tinordi blew up Rasmus Andersson in the middle of the ice. I can't remember the hit exactly, but it was elbow to the dome. It could've been clean, I don't know. I remember looking around... we had some tough guys on our team, like we said—none of them were on the ice. I'm looking around like 'Aw, fuck. I'm gonna have to...I guess it's my number, I'll go...'

I go over and I fight him, we grab on and he punched me once—whatever. I go to punch him, I'm like this far from his face...

...So I realise 'Oh god, this isn't gonna work out very well.' I kind-of just hold him out there as much as I can...He's just punching my helmet, I couldn't sleep on this (my left) side of my head for like 2 weeks! Helmet's broken, it doesn't click anymore—Helmet's broken.

I get in the locker room, I'm like throwin' my shit and Devane was actually—I don't know if he was hurt or scratched that game—comin' out of the shower and sees me all pissed off, he's like, 'What the fuck happened?' I'm like, 'This fucking—fuck, Tinordi!' and he was like right away, 'Did he string you out?' And I'm like, 'Yeah, I couldn't fucking touch him! I couldn't get in there!' He's like, 'Alright, tomorrow (because it was a back-to-back) I'll go out with you and I'll show you what to do when that happens.'

He showed me what to do. If it happens again I'm gonna revert back to what he said. I would imagine it's gonna work because he's been in that situation multiple times where he's stringed guys out. He told me what guys do against him and what works and what doesn't.

It's things like that: where I'll go out of my way or they would go out of their way—but just that respect to acknowledge how tough...these guys are...they're just as willing to help out a guy that's willing to do something like that for his teammates."

Aaaaahhhh…

… Was reading a (very good!) fic, and the author pointed out that it's Very Interesting that Kubo used Byakuya and Renji to explain Sasakibe's backstory, and I was like… Oh my gods.

Bc a) I love the whole 'I will be your right arm and do what you cannot' thing and b) I was just thinking about how I think that does apply to Byakuya and Renji.

Now it says in my contract I can't put too much stake in Tite 'I never thought we'd make it to the Soul Society' Kubo using too much deep literary symbolism/association, plus this is shonen, where said symbolism/association isn't a main priority (which is fine, BLEACH was my first manga/anime and I still love it in it's silly 2000s nonsense).

But to me… That is so them? It's a point of interest to me that Byakuya ever approved Renji as his Assistant Captain. Like. Surely that's a position that the Captain in question has to approve, since they'll be relying on each other so much. And you can't tell me Kuchiki Rules Lawyer Byakuya didn't do due diligence w/ the candidates. So why Renji to begin w/? Neither manga nor anime ever explains, and it's not relevant to the actual story. Renji bc the plot demanded it. But I also kinda like the idea of Byakuya intentionally picking someone who's a little more brash and aggressive than he allows himself to be. Someone who's more reliant on brute force and forging forward. Although it doesn't ultimately get explored much bc of the nature of the genre and the era it was written in, it comes across as Byakuya choosing someone who can be the things, have the reactions and emotions he feels he must withhold from himself. He's rigid and stoic and stingy about praise, while Renji seems to be pretty friendly with the squad and even has a subordinate that looks up to him. Like Byakuya know he's chilly and he needs someone more passionate and expressive to balance him out.

Which also makes the blood war arc events very interesting to me; unlike the other Captains, Byakuya has an Assistant who has bankai. He could, and by some theories should have had Renji use his bankai to test the enemy. He's the superior officer, technically stronger. From certain povs, it might have made more sense to risk the Assistant Captain's powers. But instead, he does it himself, and even after his bankai is stolen, he keeps insisting Renji stay back and learn from his fight (I do love the little aside in the manga where he tells Renji he's probably not smart enough to test the enemy and Renji grumbles but agrees w/ him, bc it felt so humanising and just… kinda brother-y for both of them). And even while horribly injured, he drags himself back to his feet when As Nodt starts attacking Renji. Now, it's probably also or the sake of the Soul Society itself. It makes sense, esp since they both have bankai, for one of them to stay back. But the fact that he has Renji do so, effectively sacrifices himself from the get-go, is so interesting to me.

And, of course, the very end of that fight clearly establishes how much Renji has come to mean to him. They could have just made him ask about Rukia, as so many of his appearances are primarily focused on her (sigh shonen), but instead, he apologises to both of them, and then the first thing he asks Ichigo is if they're both alive (non sequitur but if they hadn't been I thoroughly think Ichigo would have lied to him to spare him the knowledge, and also I'm a little lukewarm about Ichigo but I loved that moment).

It convinces me that while there was definitely logic/strategy in it, he was also trying to do his best to protect his Lieutenant, esp after shit truly hits the fan.

But to cycle back around to… What ever my point might have been, whether it's intentional or not, I think the fact that it's Renji and Byakuya used to tell us this story of the eternally loyal Assistant, that Byakuya clearly thinks very highly of Sasakibe's loyalty and duty. That it comes right at the start of that arc where the above happens. That Renji and Byakuya are… Aside from Shunsui and Nanao, I think the only Captain and Assistant pair that last the whole story? Oh, and Soi-Fon and her Assistant. And Hitsugaya and Rangiku! That they are one of four out of thirteen pairs that remain unchanged by the end.

I could go into a lot more (finding out the Captain you thought was kind and compassionate is a monster, while your emotionally challenged, expressionless jackass of a new Captain is a genuinely honourable and noble person), but that would get even more nonsensical. The short version is, I definitely think that whole philosophy, that image of the Assistant becoming the indispensable right hand that balances out the Captain, fills in for the things they lack or can't do for whatever reason, is really well displayed by these two, esp compared w/ some of the other dynamics we see (Momo and Izuru's blind devotion to their initial Captains, Yachiru being more moral support/after fight recovery, whatever the hell is the deal w/ Oomeda). Like Renji was his hot headed younger brother he was mentoring long before he and Rukia actually became a thing.

They're not the only ones, of course, Hitsugaya and Rangiku sync very well, so did Isane and Unohana. Kenpachi and Yachiru work, and Ikkaku stands a high chance of fulfilling the same role (albeit they should probably keep Yumichika on hand just in case). And tbh it didn't register w/ me the first time (I think partially bc I was a little overwhelmed by all the Things going on), but when someone else pointed it out… I'm like. Yeah. I think that means something.

I haven't actually read Maid-sama, though I did watch the anime a few years back. Love seeing Nobuhiko Okamoto get to be the love interest, thought the romance was pretty interesting, don't know if I'd heartily recommend it to anyone (sort of was a product of its time)

a year ago, today, was the day i first watched arlong park. it was the day i admitted to myself that one piece could be my new special interest. it was also the day i wanted to show my childhood friend one piece and then thought that would never happen. (it happened and she reacted exactly the way i wanted her to. it was so perfect! you have her back in your life now and shes so perfect. you can literally feel her love you.)

i think the guy who experienced arlong park for the first time would be so fucking happy with where we ended up. he would be so happy we have her tattoo, she's apart of us not only our identity but our body, too. he would be so proud, jealous, and in shock that any story- any shonen- lived up to our expectations.

he'd be in shock i like m/f pairings, he'd be in shock i like romance in one piece, he'd be in shock that i like sanami. he'd be in shock that we are now in love with a story in a way we never could've imagined or never even experienced ever. he'd be in shock that we have a blog about one piece that people i think respect the opinions of- he'd be in shock that now generally id say my preference romantically is towards women. and we are attracted to women and are normal about it, now. he'd be in shock that we now trust creators of stories and we trust oda to write a good one, that one piece as a story can in fact love it's audience in the deeply intimate way any story can love it's audience. that it loves us. that we are no longer scared of that trust being broken.

he would be in shock, but he would've said "i told you so", because today was the say he said "if one piece isn't the story to be my new special interest, there's nothing else it could be. this has to be it." -an author capable of arlong park is capable of anything. an author capable of giving me nami is capable of giving me my new special interest.

Suna

When you get excited and hold his hand

A new game you had been waiting to play came out so you of course went to tell Suna about it

He didn’t think much of it as it was something you normally did and then you grabbed his hand and gave him that smile

Bro was gone. Two second away from getting on his knee to ask you to marry him 

Suna was standing at the vending machines waiting for your class to end, the heat of the day making his skin sticky. Then you come bounding out of the class and he stands up as he sits for the onslaught of whatever interest you’ve found yourself enamored with today. That’s how it usually is, he meets you at the end of the day and the two of you walk to volleyball practice while you tell him what caught your interest that day. 

Something is a little different this day though, besides the heat, you grab his hands and give him a wide smile. He can see and feel your excitement. “Rin! That new game…” he can’t listen to your statement when he keeps looking at your smile and feeling your hands in his. Suddenly the heat doesn’t feel as daunting, your hands make him far warmer than the heat ever has. 

He nods his head along at your talking and makes no effort to hide that he’s looking at your lips. You start leading the both of you to the gym, swinging your arms as the excitement seems like it’s going to burst out of you. Suna’s quietness doesn’t set off any alarms as that’s how he usually is, you appreciate all of the comments he does make though. 

All Suna is thinking about is how pretty you look with that smile on your face and how he can make you smile like that again. Yep…he’s doomed.

Osamu

When you made him lunch

Always thought you were cute but now he had to ask you out 

Osamu loved food, that was a fact that everyone was very aware of. It didn’t matter what kind of food, he loved it. Loved the intricacies it took to make it. Loved the love that went into each dish. So the day that you come over to him with an extra box of food he gets excited. “Are you extra hungry today or something?” He asks as he closes his eyes and leans back slightly, arms behind his head. 

“No idiot, this one's for you. I found a new recipe I wanted to try and you’re the only one I can con into eating it.” There’s a hint of uncertainty in your voice, like you’re nervous to have him try it. You know that the idea is stupid. It’s Osamu, he’s not going to be mean to you. You’re his friend. And you’re feeding him.

Although he hoped the food was for him the idea still makes his cheeks heat up a little bit. You went out of your way to make this for him? Oh, his heart is beating out of his chest now. That’s interesting. It’s only ever done that in your presence. And suddenly it all clicks to him. He likes you. He likes you and your food and how you want to share things with him. He’s always thought you were pretty but this? Yeah, he likes you. He’ll return the favor and make you food.

Tendo

When you started reading Shonen Jump bcs he said he liked it

You were one of his first friends and while you didn’t go to Shiratorizawa still kept in touch and tried to visit him often

You guys would often have sleepovers during school breaks which is when he found the latest copy of Shonen Jump

The last thing Tendo was expecting to find over at your house was a copy of Shonen Jump. He had to do a double take when he saw the latest issue folded open on your bed. You didn’t think anything off it as you went to the bathroom to change out of your school clothes. It was usual for Tendo to stay with you during breaks from school, the two of you would cause a ruckus and then he would return to school after the break. 

He headed over to the bed and picked up the copy. He flipped the pages and a confused look was on his face. Luckily you walked out of the bathroom in your freshly changed pajamas. “This for me?” He teases with a smile as he held the magazine up and waved it around.

“No, it’s mine. You can read it if you don’t have this weeks issue though. I only started reading them for you.” You…you were reading this for him? Why? 

“Why?” 

“Because you always talk about it with so much love. I guess I wanted to love what you did.” Easy, he loves you. What? He loves you? I mean maybe some part of him has loved you since you decided to become his friend when no one else would. He feels frozen as you pluck the magazine from his hand and poke him. “You good?”

“Yeah,” he says breathlessly as you laugh at him and shake your head. Mhm. He loves you, he wants to love what you love too. Maybe that could be him…?

Ushijima

When you sat in silence with him to watch the sunset 

You’ve known each other since high school but only started dating a few months ago

Something something feelings boiled over something something (thank Tendo)

Very blunt about it lol like tells you that he loves you 

You’re watching the sunset and then all of a sudden he goes “I love you.” Like bro- give them a minute to think

Since confessing to Ushijima you can tell he’s made an effort to be more romantic. Planning dates every other week (difficult with your schedules but it’s nice to try), flowers for you on days where you have to cancel said dates. He’s taken to watching the sunset with you on days you both get home early enough. 

He comes to your apartment and knocks on the door his hand making contact with the wood. When you open the door he can’t help the small, almost nonexistent, smile that comes to his face. He holds up the bag he got from the convenience store. “Sunset?” You nod and put your shoes on. You didn’t care to get dressed up. Mostly because Ushijima didn’t care, he thought you were beautiful either way. 

There was a hill leading up to a forest behind your complex and the two of you would sit there for hours and talk while the sunset. Eating snacks and drinking sodapop, sometimes you would go to his house but the tradition was the same. The two of you had been doing this since your last year of high school. A way to get away from everything. 

When your head leans against his shoulder the words fly out of his mouth and he doesn’t see a point in stopping them. “I love you.” He can hear the small laugh that comes from you. 

“I love you too.” All feels right when you’re in his arms and the sunset is ahead of you. Everything feels right when he’s with you.

Iwaizumi

When he saw how you looked at him when he talks

Used to people wanting Oikawa

You’ve been with him since high school and didn’t disappear when Oikawa moved so he took that as a pretty good sign

Mattsun and Makki are actually the ones who pointed it out in a teasing way ofc lol

“Ugh- I’m sick of them looking at you like that.” 

Very confused as they fake gag but have smiles on their faces and then he notices it. His brain stutters

Iwaizumi doesn’t know how he didn’t notice sooner. Didn’t see the look in your eyes when he was talking. He supposes he should thank Makki and Mattsun, for all their annoyance they were the reason he noticed to begin with. It started after you left the monthly get together, an attempt to stay connected after high school, and they were the only three left in the call. 

“Ugh— they’re so love sick. I’m gonna barf. The way they look at you is so lovey dovey.” Mattsun fake gags but there’s a smile on his face and Iwaizumi knows that he’s just teasing. 

“What are you talking about?” He asks as he takes a sip of his drink, his mouth suddenly feeling dry. 

“Bro…you haven’t noticed?” Makki laughs as he chimes in from the other end of the call. “When you start talking they get this lovesick look on their face and I swear they look at your lips when you talk.”

“No they don't, you're crazy.” He scoffs and shakes his head. That would be ridiculous. Did you really look at him like you love him?

He decides to test his theory the next time the two of you meet up. Every so often you’ll force him to go shopping with you to carry all of your bags. Iwaizumi like the lovesick fool he is agrees and goes with you without too much complaint. 

“Oh something funny happened.” He starts and looks over at you, your gaze already on him. He doesn’t think much of it until he watches as your eyes flicker to his lips. The words in his throat getting caught as his tongue flicks out to lick his dried lips. 

“What happened Haji?” You sounded so in love. Is that how he sounded when he talked to you? When he looks at you. He almost hopes he does. He wants to be in love with you and he wants you to be in love with him.

Random Turtle HCs

Based on the Bayverse turts, guys are 25+ SFW

-Donnie listens to 70s/80s funk jams in the lab. Anything with a groovy beat helps keep him focused on his tasks, but sometimes he subconsciously starts dancing when his favorite songs come on the speakers. Mikey caught him once, and he's never heard the end of it.

-When they were tweens Mikey got Raph into animes like Dragonball Z and Bleach. It was something they both really got excited about when the re-runs would come on tv. As they get older, both guys still watch it together for a lil brother bonding time. They're currently binging Jujustu Kaisen and One Punch Man. Donnie will sometimes watch an episode or two with them, but he never really got into it. Leo makes fun of Mikey and Raph for liking such bro-y shows, but secretly watches shojo/shonen animes like Fruits Basket or Oran Host Club. He's re-watching Inuyasha right now (for the third time). He would die of embarrassment if his brothers found out (Donnie knows).

-After seriously pulling a muscle a few years ago, Leo got really into massage therapy. He did a bunch of research on physical therapy and different massage techniques, and figured out how to marry the two ideas so he could help out when his brothers inevitably hurt themselves. Cough *Mikey* Cough.

-Speaking of which, Mikey is literally always hurting himself. He's not clumsy, he's just a wild dude who tends to overestimate the capabilities of his board. He's smacked into the side of a building more times than his brothers can count.

-Raph has a tendency to yap in the weight room. He's serious about working out, but if one of his brothers comes in to work in with him, he'll get reeeaal chatty. It's just the space he feels most comfortable and open, where his walls come down. Mikey doesn't mind, but it bugs the crap out of Leo.

-Donnie has to be dragged to the weight room to lift weights. Leo insists on it, and even gave him a perfectly tailored workout plan, but Donnie will make up every excuse to not go. He's never been able to build muscle like his brothers, and they know that, but Leo still wants him to continue strength training. Once as a teen, he was tossed over Raph's shoulder and brought in. Raph got away mostly unscathed.

-Leo writes Star trek and Battlestar Galactica fanfic. No, I will not elaborate.

-Mikey has been teaching Splinter new slang words, mostly to irritate Leo. The other night at dinner he used "no cap" in a sentence, and Leo got up and left the table. Mikey was cackling.

-Donnie swears. A lot. Raph and Mikey do too, but Don is real bad. Leo tries not to, out of respect and in the name of good manners, but if he gets heated in a videogame against Mikey, watch out.

-Mikey struggles with depression, but uses his sense of humor to cope. His jokes occasionally border on self-depreciating, which is a heads up to his brothers that he's not doing great. They take camping trips or plan fun days to help him out of the funk.

-Leo is the biggest flirt in the world. He doesn't realize he's doing it sometimes, until his victims are more blush than person and a puddle on the floor.

-Donnie is incredibly sassy. Like 1000%. He loved sitcom shows like The Golden Girls growing up, and learned how to deliver absolutely fatal comebacks with ease. He doesn't strike to kill unless he's annoyed, usually.

-Raph loves to sing. Like actually loves it. He won't sing for his brothers, but if you follow him on nights when he sneaks off, he goes to abandoned warehouses for the acoustics. Raph has a beautiful voice, with a little rasp to it, and he likes the way it echoes off the rafters. He usually sings along with 90s/2000s r&b, but sometimes will pull out some classic rock ballads. He's been singing Because of You by Ne-yo the past few nights.

-When Mikey discovers a new artist that he likes, the whole lair knows. He plays the music on full blast, going through the full discography. Donnie usually has to threaten to disconnect the wifi before he'll turn it down. His newest fixation was the Silk Sonic album.

-All the brothers' music tastes are influenced by each other. Raph listens to Rap, Leo likes R&B, Mikey's into Hip Hop, and Donnie's music is soup (there's a bit of literally everything). They all share music with each other, adding to the queue when they're in the garbage truck. The only consensus is that country sucks.
