Someone put the idea of Wee John and Frenchie essentially being queer platonic partners (but without necessarily those words) into my head last night and I have not been able to stop thinking about them since.

And now there’s an entire scene planned in this fic that’s haunted the life out of me where Frenchie sits with a sad Ed in the crows nest and rambles about what he and John have, how it took them some time to get on the same page about what they wanted, how realizing whatever this was wasn’t romantic but felt more than just a regular friendship had been a bit scary at first, but they navigated it together and now they’re so happy and Frenchie would trade that for anything.

I cannot express in words how much I love the crew in Our Flag Means Death. I adore how much personality they all have even tough they are stuck in the "background character" group. I would honestly watch it if any of them would have their own spin-off. I mean, I like Ed and Stede just fine, but look at these babies!!!

Frenchie: Oh, don't get me started on Frenchie, I adore the man. He's the literal impersonation of 'looks like a cinammon roll, could kill you'. My man is a DnD bard who invented pyramid schemes *and* fanfictions. Plus he may be the genius of his age while still believing in witches and crystals.

Wee John: Roomies! Man, how much more I'd like to see of this beautiful Drag Queen. Long live Calypso! And how much I whish to know if he sews his own drag clothes.🤔

Black Pete: It's not healthy how much I'm invested in "Blackbeard's most trusted man". He thinks he needs to create cool stories to get the others to like him, but he's actually very soft and caring. I mean, have you seen the finger he gave to Lucius? He's an angel.

Lucius: If it weren't from Ori from the Hobbit movies, he'd be my favorite scribe of all times. My man is underpaid for all the realitionship drama he has to listen to and his bonus consisted of getting thrown off the ship (which is, like, rude). Also, he can pickpocket Spanish Jackie???? Hi, yes, I'd like to order a backstory, possibly 20 hours long, please.

Buttons: Oh gosh, the Sea Witch. I'm in need of much more explanation and screen time dear writers. And he straight up talks to animals and curses people? Aunty took one look at him and went: "Yapp, that's the Sea Witch". I wonder how Frenchie haven't declared him an evil witch yet.

Roach: My man is a maniac cook whose also the medic just in case. He's half crazy and I couldn't thank him more for it. He also let's Stede request orange cakes from him which is just very sweet overall. Bro also invented peanut butter (like we wouldn't notice it), then fed it to an allergic person, then blamed it on a curse.

the Swede: It's most certainly not fair how well written he is for him to be standing in the background. He has the voice of an angel, please! He might not be the smartest person in the room, but he fucks like a jackhammer, I mean he became hot. That's something.

Jim: Oh, sometimes I cannot comprehend how great Jim is. They're mute, then a mermaid, then neither, 'cause they're just Jim! They're exactly the kinda person to give up revenge for 'not feeling the vibe' anymore. They also would kill anyone who hurts their crewfamily without batting an eye.

Oluwande: Don't even get me started on this beautiful, lovely teddy bear. He's the best hearted, but still serious and trustful of all. He literally gets along with everyone and we need so much people like him. Today's message is to be more like Olu!

OHHHHHHHH MY GODDDD????? THE PARTY EPISODES JUST DONT MISS?? IZZY SINGING LA VIE EN ROSE (I LOVE THIS SONG) IN DRAG W/ WEE JOHN WAS CRAZYYYYYYY I WAS ACTUALLY ALMOST BAWLING AND KICKING MY FEET WITH MY FRIEND OH MY GODDDD

and listen im no izzy apologist, but GOD he has very quickly risen from one of my least favourite characters to one of my favs. I love him SO much. Con's singing voice? FUCKING GORGEOUS. and frenchie playing the lute again?? FUCK. you bet your ASS im writing a fanfic about that WHOLEEE episode. GOD. im so unbelievably happy about episode 6 you guys have NO idea. Last season's party episode was my fav prior to this, but THIS episode?? all time fav hands down. I hated that it was only 30 minutes though that shit deserved to be so much longer. and then the crew singing along through the credits and chanting one more song had me in tears, how dare they rob us of seeing that scene play out.

now dont even get me STARTED on episode 7. die. so what the fuck was that. I was LOVING when the episode started, saw frenchie shake some ass in the background and almost had a heart attack (i will forever be in love with Frenchie sorryyy), but then THAT. scene. WHAT THE FUCK. the lead up to ed and stede reuniting and making up was SO good and then THAT??? WHAT THE FUCK?? WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN YOURE GONNA BE A FISHERMAN??? DIEEEEE. I wouldve COMPLETELY understood if Ed said the last night was a mistake and he had to figure things out before he could continue with Stede. thats fine. thats actually really great and really healthy and i love that, genuinely. but then the ARGUEMENT?? FUCK RIGHT OFF. MY HEART? SHATTERED. TORN TO SHREDS. PUT THROUGH THE BLENDER. BECAUSE WHAT THE FUCK. EVERYTHING that this season had been leading up to and perfectly crafting all for NOTHING?? FOR THEM TO BE SEPERATED AGAIN?? no. im SORRY but i hate it. I *do* see it working out in a few select scenarios, but im still pissed. like if they dont have them meet back up in the most perfect way possible ill be so mad. like SO mad. and then the whole thing with Olu, Jim and Archie and Zheng Yi was so cute and then Stede had to RUIN it. god. i ahte when he gets drunk and starts aggroing at people, it never ends well. Thoughts: The Innkeeper

Ahhhhh here we go, part 3 of 3. I'll do the new episodes next week once I've had time to digest. Ugh, I can't believe I have to wait until I get home from work tomorrow to watch, what the actual fuck? Anyway!

That little lick of flame to open is kind of elegant, I like it

"Soul Reaper" makes me laugh because I can just imagine that guy being like, "Yeah, I'm a reaper of souls but also...I've got soul" and it's doubly terrible.

Just watching Zheng in action and thinking about "Every pirate captain captains pirates differently"

I really love Stede's crew lined up and watching as they approach the Revenge, I think they all look suitably shellshocked and I think they're all at least a little bit thinking of it like Jim was when they were talking to Archie, a place where their lives meant something

Stede scaling the side of the ship, not wasting a thought on something as trivial as a rope ladder

One moment to survey the devastation and then back to action

"Guys, hi!" Like there's nothing amiss about the scene he just walked in on. Never change.

"I thought you'd be taller" is such a great callback

"He retired" belongs in the Treacherous Liars Hall of Fame. And "If you don't want to work anymore, you can just give up, I guess," is another early favorite for best line delivery of the Season

Love Zheng's face when she says "Leather. And B.O."

When I watched the trailer and I saw the bits that had this blue saturation to them I called a dream/vision situation and I guess I wasn't far off. Everything about the way this is shot is gorgeous.

My sis: "Why is there a pig?" I think since it's a dream (-ish) it's one of those things where the brain just tries to plug in something, I don't think Ruthie has any real significance but I would love to hear thoughts if anyone has any. It did remind me a little of the bit in "Cold Mountain" where Inman meets the goat woman who cares for him for a time. Like, some mysterious hermits have goats, some have pigs. *shrug*

I think i want to start a band and call it the Coolin' Bevvies

The way Con's voice trembles when says "I dared to mention your fuckin' name" - masterful

Stede seems to be realizing that for everything he's coming to understand about Ed and about pirating there's still a whole world of stuff he needs to learn.

Okay, dumb question, is Ed's shirt black or is it purple? Or is it legit changing from shot to shot? Or is it just the...the filter or whatever they used here? (Sorry, I don't know the lingo) whatever, I love it, sometimes his hair even has a purple cast to it, so cool.

When Ed starts flashing back in reaction to Hornigold going at him and there's that one tiny burst of Izzy laughing at him - oh god, that's such a gut punch

Gravy Basket would also be a great name for a band

In all seriousness, Taika is so good in this whole scene

I really like Olu defining a friend as "someone I'd like to see grow old"

Lol every time at "This one has a smell" because yes, chamomile has a smell and it is weird

"I never said that"/"You say that all the time" - another hilarious callback/inversion

Between multiple viewings of both this episode and the trailer, I've seen this bit with Black Pete and the crossbow probably dozens of times and I still laugh out loud every time

I think...Izzy's trying. That's all I'm gonna say for right now. I think he's trying.

And then...and then. I don't even know where to start about this whole sequence. I loved it the first time I watched it, and I sobbed (always a good indicator in my book, I think Stede saying "I messed all of this up" is what really touches me off) and I think I've loved it more every time I've watched it. It's beautiful and perfect and sweet and just the right amount of dramatic and just the right amount of...silly, which doesn't mean I'm selling it short or diminishing it in any way, I mean silly in the best possible way. And the way they smile at each other when they're finally face to face? And the way Ed leans in? That's it, going to watch again....

I was too young (and too American, probably) to have really gotten into Kate Bush in her heyday, I knew "Running Up that Hill," and her album "The Red Shoes" got played a little on the radio around here when it was out, but I honestly don't think I knew "This Woman's Work" until recently. I now love it just by virtue of it being so perfect in this scene. The ethereal-ness of it and the way it builds with the action, or the action builds with the song - I can't think of something that would have been better.

"I shouldn't have left," Stede takes a hold of Ed's hands.

"You didn't really," Ed shrugs. "I mean, physically you very much did, but...those loose ends from back home might have fucked things up for us. I mean people not knowing one hundred percent if you were dead or not, by the way, I'm not trying to call your kids and ex wife 'loose ends'-"

"It doesn't matter," Stede interrupts. "Things are cleaned up, and we-"

"Badminton's ship is still far enough off to run them straight into the rocks," Buttons interjects from the precarious crew huddle a few feet away. "If you snuff out the light now at least!"

"I don't think they're listening," Olu sighs. "Does anyone think they could climb past them to the light?"

A few hands hesitantly rise.

"Without falling off the lighthouse in the process."

Most of the hands go down.

Except Izzy and Jim.

"Absolutely not," Olu says. "Jim, I love you, so no. I'm not watching you fall to your death here!"

"What about watching me fall to my death elsewhere, later?" Jim asks.

"This is serious!" Olu says. "But sure. Only if I get to fall with you."

"This is almost as bad as the captains," Pete grumbles. "I'll do it!"

"It's a win win if I do it," Izzy notes. "For you all. I'll probably fall and Badminton will dash himself into the rocks. What more could you ask for?"

"You gotta fucking stop," Frenchie scoffs. "We are, at this point, in agreement with each other and all on the same team. No one has actively threatened you in at least a week. Chill."

There's a pause, and an unspoken pondering from everyone that had been marooned. What exactly had Frenchie and Izzy gone through during that time?

"Right," Izzy clears his throat awkwardly. "Sorry."

"How did you do that?" Olu asks. "Frenchie, how-"

"We bonded," Jim interrupts. "What? Don't any of you fucking look at me like that! It was...okay."

"Then it sort of turned into fun," Frenchie adds. "Aside from Ed...having a not so great time."

Izzy nods. "Did you guys know we all sing? All three of us."

Pete blinks. "I'm not against whatever is happening here, but...look, can we just kill this guy?"

"Nah," Lucius pushes by him. "Hey, if everyone could let me by, just. Scooch a little without falling off aaaand thank you!"

Further down the lighthouse top, Stede's shirt goes fluttering down to the ground.

"Oh," Olu watches it fly. "I think we missed them making u-cock is out. Okay. Well. Lucius, have you got this?"

"In more ways than one," Lucius replies. "First, I fucked Badminton Number 5. Please don't tell him I call him that; he has no idea. He's planning to run them into the rocks no matter what, so actually! We can let these two fuck up here-"

A moan interrupts him.

"Like that, yeah," Lucius continues. "Though I'd recommend going just down to the level below at least. You can't fall off anything there."

He turns and prods a bit of Stede. "Hey. I meant it. You can't fuck if you fall off of this thing."

There's an awkward rush down, to give the captains privacy, then an absolutely horrifying crack and crash of a ship on sharp rocks.

Lucius claps his hands together and grins. "Today is going even better than I'd hoped."

they’re pretty mainstream tbh. like i absolutely believe that Lucius is alive. i like the Hiding In The Walls idea. but also i’ve loved the Lucius pretending to be a ghost to Ed thing too

i don’t think Stede deserves all the anger. i think he fully deserves to be angry at Ed for marooning his crew. he went through something traumatic, and he felt he had to put things right with his family. so i do see a sword fight between them both, a lovely, amazing, Nandor/Guillermo-esque, homoerotic fight scene

personally i’d love for them to somewhat reach a spot where they stop to listen and explain. but

i really would love to see Black Pete being super angry at Ed. like, Olu and Jim get reunited, Ed and Stede reuniting (wether it’s good or bad) and Black Pete excitedly looking around for Lucius. and he isn’t there,

why isn’t Lucius around? Ed looking kinda guilty, Stede looking expectedly for his golden child. and then they’re fighting again after it comes out that Lucius was thrown overboard

Black Pete deserves to not want to be in the shadow of Blackbeard, if you get what i mean. i think it would be a great character development to have him no longer idolise that part of Ed, which Ed kinda didn’t really want to be anymore

i think there’ll be an Ed Apologising For Throwing Away Stede’s Stuff, and Stede Fondly Telling Ed That They’re Just Things. That Ed Is His Finest Thing

also, maybe faking Blackbeard’s death? so he can just be Ed.

i know that all doesn’t really answer the question at all. and it’s all over the place, but head empty no coherent thoughts

another thing I would like to point out about the "I can't believe it's not queerbaiting" OFMD discourse: Lucius.

Many shows would have picked him as the Token Gay Character to claim they achieved peak representation and call it a day. Lucius is superficially that character but also he's really not. He has his own love story, subplots, relationships and even his own antagonist (Izzy). At the start he likes to have Stede as a captain only because it's comfortable to him, personally, and he supports him because that's literally his job. And once he starts liking Stede on a personal level he's never anyone's Gay Best Sidekick BECAUSE EVERYONE'S IS QUEER. He's helping Stede and Ed as a fellow queer man. OFMD doesn't really do homophobia but there are some hints what with Stede being bullied and Lucius lying to his mother about liking girls and Jim hesitant coming out. And anyway we, in the real world, can see the difference.

Also Lucius is very well written and he's not involving himself into anyone's love story because gossip or whatever, he's getting involved because he has experiences and he's really good at relationships and social dynamics and is using his experience to help. He sees two hopeless people and decides that someone needs to help them navigate whatever rhe heck they are feeling for the first time in their lives and that someone is him. He's also never pushy or whatever - he just listens.

Idk guys I really love Lucius and how as a watcher you now which tropes would be in play enough to be delighted that this is not what happens.

Jim as a character (and Olu of course) also have a great impact on the "I can't believe it's not queerbaiting" factor but gotta think about it for another couple of days.
