Good question. Primarily, it’s because the original title of the Hark! A Vagrant comic was “Javert is in a slash fiction”, but for all I know, it could be because of the reasons you’ve suggested. Go wild. Headcanon either of them as you see fit.

Urabrask was wasted

Barring a few questionable decisions, I largely enjoyed the story of All Will be One and March of the Machine. However, it’s clear that they have wasted Urabrask as a character.

First introduced way back in Scars of Mirrodin, Urbrask and his red-aligned faction offered something remarkable: empathy, due to their unique mana alignment. Later in Theros we learn that Norn subjugated his layer precisely due to him allowing rebels to survive there, and New Capenna seemed to go in the direction of outright making him a rebellion against Phyrexia.

Then All Will Be One that not only refuses to give him a POV despiste being an important player, we only hear about him from biased characters like Koth, who naturally want him dead. Then the Planeswalker’s Guide for the setting implies that, despiste preffering willing conversions, he’s still pro-Phyrexia, and the side stories have his underling Slobad using shady tactics for “willing conversions”.

This effectively killed off all that was built in Scars, and it’s a damn shame. His whole contribution in March is an assist to Chandra – once again a biased character – and then dying via torture device.

We could have had not only an unique character but an actual moral quandry on whereas it is possible to co-exist with some form of Phyrexia. Instead, we have the definition of wasted potential.

I posted this in a reddit thread but I feel like it’s worth posting here. Just some musings inspired by @littjara-compleated-sage ‘s posts about phyrexia in relation to gender. “See that's why I love Urabrask so much actually. he takes all the horror of phyrexia, the bodies warped beyond recognition and flayed and remixed and he adds an element of CHOICE to it. Urabrask represents the ultimate freedom not only from the contstraints of society, but from the constraints of your own biology, where your form becomes entirely modular and self-dictated, where modification is an opt-in scenario where YOU are the one in control. He stands opposed to those who would force a mutation onto others (going through the wrong puberty can often feel like a horrific disfiguring similar in tone to that of compleation) and offers an alternative, a path through change where it doesn't have to be so scary.”

As a Baby/Child - There's two ways to look at it; either just "repurposed" after a LONG time inactive and despondant, or as a weird little jellybean monster germ thing. The latter has more drawings of it somewhere.

Winter Clothes - It was chilly at the time, she has a lovely hat pin.

In Pajamas - Or as I prefer to say, Jammies Mode.

With Another OC - This I struggled with, one of mine or one of someone else's? Went with L'rix. Who is probably very dead or very depressed.

Wounded - Is what it says on the tin, had the line art for a long while, finally colored it. More peeved than anything.

Cosplay - Cosplaying as another famous Phyrexian Sleeper Agent.

In a Suit - Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was. Same as it ever was.

With the Gang - The other party members. A very quick doodle cause i was wanting to get it done.

Underwater - Nevermind how she got there, this was a lot of fun to figure out.

With a Weapon - There's plenty of doodles of Decima with weapons. Just did a quick one for this.

Favorite Food - Peirogis, Pierogis? Pirogis? However it is spelt.

Memories whispered out of the Ichor in Xantcha’s veins. These memories had given them the name they had taken, and the name of their partner Tree, One from Eight. The Spark of flame in their chest flared, drawing them from the memories, and in the distance, They saw a band of be-tentacled creatures of Chrome and Blue speeding in the Direction of Crucible. Followers of the Progress engine, no doubt, seeking subjects for their experiments. Just walking they would never get to the Town in time, but they didn’t have to walk. With a twist of concentration, one from Eight’s Song rang out and The ichor that infused all of Phyrexia answered swirling into a Black Oil disk in front of Xantcha. They stepped through into the Oil and came out in front of the gates to Crucible, Vigilance swooping down to meet them.

Meet Xantcha, inspired by @littjara-compleated-sage I decided to try my hand at Heroforging myself a Phyrexian Dryad. I imagine they are some form of child? of Wrenn and their partner tree, which is a seedling of Eight (Realmbreaker). They also inherited a Spark from their parent, both of flame and perhaps, also, a planeswalker Spark as well... I am proud of this one, I think I did a pretty good job!

Traenor in Kamigawa! A one-time Knight Samurai, now a Freelance Ronin on a quest for revenge. @lyxine's Endry, his friend, was brought to New Phyrexia by @littjara-compleated-sage's Xena Vadri, and was compleated before his eyes by Jin-Gitaxias (or so he thought.) He was put under a Geas and sent away by @myrsphere's Blue Gitaxias. But he swore vengeance. He promised blood. When he heard Jin was on Kamigawa, he wasted no time doing whatever he needed to squeeze every ounce of information he could from the plane, hunting down Futurists with the help of a Reckoner gang he allied himself with.
