Shen Yuan is two things:

1) chronically ill

2) rich rich

He couldn’t count on both hands the number of health scares he’s had, but he fought years to move out of his parents house and live independently!

…. Until he was found half dead by his sister and nearly died in the hospital. No one even knew until she showed up.

The smart thing- the thing his parents want- would be to sell his apartment and move back in so his family can watch him. But frankly, Shen Yuan was reaching the end of his 20s. He didn’t want to be 30 in his parents home being scolded for buying yet another anime figurine and fussed over all hours of the day by nannies.

So, like the adults they were, they compromised. Shen Yuan could live independently IF he put together a complete staff of live in specialists to help him. He had a few months to do so, and all had to be thoroughly background checked.

Which is how he ended up with an old estate filled with specialists who all bore striking resemblances to the cast of Proud Immortal Demon Way.

(SY endears himself over the course of months to the entire modern cast of svsss and collects them to live with him and be generously financially supported. Additionally he finally tracks down the hack author of PIDW and keeps him as well, taking away the financial strain so PIDW can achieve its true potential as art.)

quick personal update -- i've been in chinaaaa for the past few weeks! plus a few days of layover in tokyo, so i got to visit japan for the first time! good experiences good food all around \(^_^)/

The more I think about it, the more the Kitakami siblings experiences kind of read like mixed-race kids who didn't have the opportunity to embrace both of their cultures in a healthy way.

Like, Carmine is very aggressive towards "outsiders" and while some of the other NPCs do refer to you as an outsider, they aren't as hostile. Mostly just offering you a battle and then being disappointed that they lost to a tourist. But there are even NPCs who comment that Carmine's behavior goes above and beyond. The caretaker especially:

"I hardly know what to do with the two of them... Especially that Carmine. Always been a handful, that one. I apologize if she gave you a hard time." (Taken directly from Bulbapedia)

Like, it feels like she's almost trying too hard to fit into Kitakami, like she's overcompensating for the fact that she isn't 100% Kitakamian.

Especially when you consider the fact that she immediately wants to defend Ogerpon once she hears that it was bullied, despite Ogerpon also technically being an outsider. And by the end of the Teal Mask, she's still high-strung, but not nearly as aggressive as before. While it could just be her learning to be nicer to people, it may also be a final thing of self-acceptance?

Kieran, on the other hand feels like he's on the other end of the spectrum. He doesn't have any real gripe with outsiders, and is confused when Carmine acts aggressive. He seems to be a bit of a loner, referring to the player as his first friend, but he's not really isolated from the rest of Mossui Town. A few NPCs talk about him in a positive light (first one that comes to mind is an NPC who says "I heard someone befriended Ogerpon! I bet it was Kieran") and even during the Teal Mask, when he tells the other villagers about the true story, he's believed pretty easily, which wouldn't have happened if he's as much of a loner as he makes himself out to be.

If anything, it feels like Kieran is almost self-isolating himself from Kitakami's culture. Even before Ogerpon is known to be the good guy, he talks about how he wants to be the ogre's friend, and how he feels connected to it, being an outcast. He identifies more with the half that isn't from Kitakami, but given that he has no way to embrace that, he just goes against the culture that's present.

There's also his accent. When I was replaying TM, I noticed that Kieran's accent wasn't as prevalent as I thought it was? But going through the whole story, plus ID and MM, I realized that he was a mild accent in the Teal Mask, no accent during the Indigo Disk, and then a much heavier accent during Mochi Mayhem and the subsequent League Club room visits (at least in the English version, no idea how that works in the original Japanese.) Like he's finally embraced the part of him that's from Kitakami, instead of trying so hard not to be.

Idk. I'm whiter than a piece of paper, so most of what I'm talking about just comes from my experiences with my mixed-race friends and family. If anyone is mixed and wants to add on to or shut me up, please do so!! I'm simply an observer.

Dazai learns to patch up his pokémon himself when in a pinch, and he'll feed them berries and spray potions on their wounds because Yokohama has its fair share of sketchy Pokémon Centers that he doesn't trust the same way he doesn't trust people to patch him up and tend to his wounds. So his pokémon are sometimes wandering around covered in bandages themselves and the first time Chuuya sees Dazai's Wooper, he has half a mind to snatch the thing up and bring it to a proper Pokémon Center for treatment.

His crimes include snatching berries from the trees of berry growers and inappropriately using the HM Surf to cross waters where pokémon surfing is illegal in the bay (he does it cut down time but also to get away from Chuuya when he pulls his pranks, forgetting Chuuya has a pokémon that can fly and Dazai's sometimes just been...snatched up in the claws of a talonflame and flown back to headquarters)

He busts those medicinal shops that sell the super bitter herbs that pokémon hate like revival herbs, energy roots, and heal powders. And force feeds them to his enemies instead

He's been holding off on evolving his Wooper for years because he found the poor thing all alone in an alley battered and surrounded by trashcans and dumpsters where it didn't belong, looking a little scared as thunder struck. Wooper shouldn't be alone but he didn't know what else to do other than take it in himself and patch it up. Then it refused to leave his side. And now he might have a tiny soft spot for it.

He also likes using Chuuya's pokémon because of his own laziness. Sometimes Chuuya will walk in to his arcanine starting a little fire for Dazai to keep warm because he can't stand the cold—and has half a mind to tell Dazai to cut it out and catch his own fire types if he wants one so bad, but might have a SMALL change of heart because his arcanine-then-growlithe used to do the same for him and the Sheep when they were in the slums)

Or he'll get the great idea of taking it for a ride across the city so he can catch up to Chuuya who's speeding on his motorcycle.

Dazai tries to goad people into touching his Wooper because it secretes a deadly poison, and Chuuya threatens him every time he does it.
