After his beloved wife dies, Xu Wenwu returns to use the ten rings and reactivates his organization in search of revenge, he also introduces his son to his organization and leaves his daughter Xialing relegated, Shang Chi from an early age will learn the martial arts of the clan with a difficult, hard and exhausting training; Xialing decides to secretly practice with the Sheng biao, she grows up and manages to master it.

Anyway now that the hype has long passed I do want to note (as I'm sure this has been noted in many other places) that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a double-edged sword in terms of Chinese American representation.

On one hand, it had a good story, some of the best choreography in the MCU, beautifully designed costumes and fantastical worlds, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, and truly did portray Chinese American & Chinese characters as fleshed-out complex characters. There were quite a few elements of it that made me feel seen, quite frankly, for the first time ever in the Western superhero genre without leaving a bad taste in my mouth. The team did a good job with discarding the extremely racist comic book origins to come up with a new background and storyline that made the movie pretty enjoyable overall and left me feeling quite satisfied once I left the theatre.

That being said-

It was deeply, deeply sanitized for a (mass) white audience. It still falls into many stereotypes and tropes. Shang-Chi is a secret kung fun master with ties to a secret mystical Chinese crime organization. Katy has an H. B. from UBerkley and is a prodigy at archery. Xialing is ALSO a kung fu master. The entire storyline revolves around the return to China trope, and while it does take the characters back to America at the end, the overall storyline seems to hover around this premise: that China is where all the action must happen for characters of Chinese ancestry, that all Chinese people are secretly kung-fu masters or smart prodigies, that the East has this *woo secret mystical oriental flavour with dragons (because what Chinese media isn't complete without dragons haha amirite)!!* that can't be found in the West. As much as I did appreciate the film (and still do somewhat), it's undeniable that this is watered down so that a Western audience could consume it.

There's a reason mainland Chinese audiences didn't like it. The action sequences are like every other Jackie Chan or wuxia sequence you've ever seen in Chinese film. Given how these sequences are almost always extremely high quality, there's a reason this looks amazing compared to the MCU but pretty standard compared to what the usual Chinese moviegoer would see. The worldbuilding in Ta Lo is minimal and clearly written from a Western perspective, especially when compared to much of Chinese fantasy or xianxia media. Every time someone tells me that this film was made for mainland China, I laugh - this movie couldn't be more clearly targeted to a Western audience. Overall, while Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings certainly has its merits and is indeed a step forward in bringing Chinese American superheroes to mainstream media, it's also a continued step on the wrong path of stereotypes and overused tropes.

Anyway if you want a good film with Chinese American representation PLEASE go see Everything Everywhere All At Once that movie is better in literally every single way

A belated review of Marvel's Shang-Chi

First of all, it is a pretty good movie. Lots of fun action, great references to Chinese culture, and all the usual MCU tie-ins. But I found that I had expected... more. Warning - minor spoilers.

The village of Ta-Lo: The CGI team clearly did their research here, and there was a good deal of legitimate Chinese mythology at play in the local fauna. However, the traditional wuxia mysticism felt like it was being shoehorned into a setting reminiscent of Black Panther's technologically advanced Wakanda, with a result that ended up in a sort of no-man's-land rife with uncertainty and loose ends. Is Ta-Lo's only deterrence for discovery the shifting bamboo forest that "eats" trespassers? Have there been no attempts over thousands of years to build additional defenses around the Dark Gate? Why did their ancient civilization have skyscrapers but rely on archers as their main force? I loved seeing qilin and fenghuang on the big screen, but the literary bridge connecting this world to that of the Avengers was built half-heartedly at best.

The wushu: It's always great to see Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung doing their thing, and there were a decent number of shots where the actors themselves did the action, instead of cutting to one of their top-tier stunt doubles - not something you see every day. But I found myself perhaps unreasonably disappointed by the martial arts on screen. I get that the gist of it was a struggle between Ying Li's taijiquan (which actually felt more like baguazhang) and Wenwu's bajiquan (with a splash of trickster flair); but more often than not, these styles were kind of washed out by typical marvel-style snappy fight sequences. It was good fighting! Just not quite as special as I had thought it would be. The weapons were also pretty cool - tiger hook swords and rope dart are traditional wushu apparatus - but they didn't really have anything to do with either Ying Li or Wenwu's respective fighting styles.

The archery: This was actually an extremely gratifying inclusion that I didn't expect to see. Most modern archers use what's known as a Mediterranean draw, in which the string is pulled back with three fingers and anchored somewhere along the jawline. Katy and the other archers of Ta-Lo are using a proper Mongolian draw, pulling the string with a thumb all the way back to the ear. My only nitpick is that in the mural depicting the Dweller-in-Darkness's original defeat, Ta-Lo's archers are using some kind of two-finger draw floating way past the back of the head that I've never seen before. That just felt a little bit sloppy for a piece of artwork that otherwise would have been a neat continuity nod.

The Chinese: The amount of Mandarin in the film was a pleasant surprise, and Katy's struggle to understand was deeply relatable. There were quite a few mistranslations, but I can more or less accept this as prioritizing the spirit of certain phrases over their literal meaning. I actually take more issue with Marvel's persistently using the outdated Wade-Giles system of romanization, rather than the almost ubiquitously accepted Hanyu Pinyin (e.g. Shàng Qì).

The sexism: Not that my background as a cishet male gives me any particular insight on this subject, but I found it ironic that Xialing, whose somewhat lackluster character development revolves around her father's disregard, is as a character more or less disregarded by Marvel in much the same way. She's presented as an exceptionally gifted fighter able to manipulate a complex weapon perfectly after seeing it handled from afar, as well as a shrewd businesswoman able to manipulate a complex underground organization after coming in as a complete stranger. She's all strength with no weakness; the façade of a perfect woman with no depth to support her. There doesn't seem to be anything Shang-Chi can do that Xialing couldn't do better, so the focus on the male sibling (even if he is the titular character) ends up feeling contrived. Their mother doesn't fare much better, introduced as a stalwart warrior able to fend off a legendary thousand-year-old warlord... only to die off-screen at the hands of small-time gangsters. Ying Li deserved better.

This is not at all meant as a knock on Shang-Chi. It's a solid movie, a credit to its actors, and definitely a step in the right direction for Asian representation in cinema. I just think it's missing that extra mile that would have made it truly incredible.

Idea for Shang-Chi 2 (I’ve done so many of these types of posts, but they’re fun to do):

Picking up from the end of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, Wong learns that the rings are sending out a beacon to an alternate dimension. Wong speculates that this is where Wenwu stole the rings several centuries ago and that being in Ta Lo must have activated the beacon. This pretty much means that wherever the alternate dimension is, it’s connected to Ta Lo.

We then learn that the alternate dimension is K’un L’un, making a direct connection to “Iron Fist”. Wenwu somehow found the path to K’un L’un and stole the rings from the Iron Fist at the time (implied to be Wu Ao-Shi). The reason why the beacon was activated in Ta Lo is because K’un L’un is located in Ta Lo (Ta Lo is much bigger than what we saw in the movie).

With the beacon activated, the leader of K’un L’un orders the current Iron Fist to find Shang-Chi and bring the rings back in order to right the wrongs of the past. And, if you remember the Iron Fist season 2 finale, the Iron Fist is revealed to be Colleen Wing (with Jessica Henwick reprising her role). 

Working title of the movie: “Shang-Chi v. Iron Fist: Battle for the Ten Rings” 

(of course, Shang-Chi and Colleen eventually become friends because, you know, superheroes. Also, there really isn’t that much of a grudge between them to begin with).
