behind the curtain ep 4

bit late with this one but i wanted to finish laundry first so here we go.. notes on this bitch

right off the bat, yes! i did rotoscoping!

what! after avoiding it since 2017!! shoutout to jennifer @antoniosvivaldi for inspiring me to do that, btw. you should absolutely check out her stuff if you haven't already--her style is so unique and refreshing!

for the most part, i think they turned out swell--after effects behaved itself for once, which like, thank fuck, because i was on a call with fio @maranello and others at 1 in the morning like "haha! i totally know what i'm doing!" narrator voice they did NOT know what they were doing, they were making educated guesses based on past horrible experiences (hence avoiding rotoscoping for years 💀).

but this is meant to be educational lol so! what is rotoscoping? simply put, it's a tracing technique. it has its roots way back in animation when tech was starting to pick up in like the 1920s and artists wanted a more efficient way of animating. rotoscoping is one of those tools that've been used differently from how it was originally intended, which is actually? so cool from like, a media arts study perspective?? because it's commonplace to use it for live-action film and vfx work as a way to mask scenes out and isolate them in addition to its original use of mapping things to isolated scenes. i won't bore you with the stuart hall encoding/decoding stuff, but just know that i find the development of digital art circa adobe dominance fascinating. i am using this century-old animation technique to impose my blorbo upon the eyes of thousands.

ANYWAY. i really liked this particular mask--it has a lot of movement but still manages to flow nicely?

next up: the lightsaber

goodness. where do i start. well first of all i had a vision of something much more 2d when it comes to lightsaber anatomy, lol. but i extended my subscription for maxon and figured--why not take full advantage of this while i've still got it? so i got this 3d model of luke's lightsaber. it's untextured and unrigged and clunky but thankfully it had most of the inner parts so as far as i'm concerned i struck GOLD.

idk what i can really say in terms of like What Is 3d Modelling, because i think people have an understanding of that. so we'll go instead thru my process!

i added materials and added a null object (does that count as rigging? for something as straightforward as this?) to do a simple rotation animation on the first day...

and then i had an idea before bed to separate the parts like that one scene in the clone wars where they show how a lightsaber is assembled, except i haven't watched the scene so god knows how they animated it NKJFGNDFKJGDF. anyway the day after, this was kinda where i got:

keyframing on c4d is a Bitch because u can't just Access The Graph Editor you have to go through the dope sheet and change ur views and it's just. annoying!! coming from an after effects standpoint! but i can see how it's optimized for Actual Animation work so ughgh. we deal. onwards..

asked the team over at usergif and natalie @kenobiis suggested putting in a kyber crystal to fill out the middle. i ended up taking the og "laser" cylinder and modifying/animating it because uh THIS is the real inside of a lightsaber and i am not putting all that into a 3 second gif LMAO. but yeah i fine-tuned the animation and plopped it in after effects, then fiddled with video copilot's saber to make luke's blade.

u might notice the motion blur--that's re:vision's RSMB! i also added a little bit of depth of field with frischluft, but it doesn't show up well in gif form. speaking of things that don't render well:

there is A FUCK TON of aliasing going on. i couldn't make any anti-aliasing settings work for some reason so i ended up trying to smooth it out in ae.. to probably not a lot of effect. i got the very edges around it smoothed out with the classic gaussian blur and a matte choker method, but the black rings are killer. ugh. it's whatever, i figure i'll work something better out for the next time.

everything else is fairly basic and intuitive i think? obviously used shape layers + alpha mattes, my beloved. i fucked up a little on the text because i think i made my offset keyframes backwards somewhere in the middle of the process but at that point i was too lazy to go back in and fix it. oops!

Not really sure what to say about this but I’m saying it here and now

Earlier this week (while contemplating how to use what I know about obsidian to more effectively utilize it for thinking/researching/writing, while i was surrounded by piles of physical and digital books, and digital journal articles, and digital copies of art/images) I had a realization

and it was the kind of realization I didn’t know what to think about

for the first time in my life I am 100% researching academicish stuff that is entirely of my interests, for my interests, to answer my many many many many many (oh so many) research questions in addition to applying some of it to my many many many Projects of Application.

and this is ... a big hmmm.

while this might not be obvious to people who have either had good experiences in academia or who romanticize academia ... well, ya see

for gen-x and millennials and now gen-z, especially in america, if you aren’t working on something that has Obvious Immediate Pragmatic Economic Impact, you are almost certain to never get funding or be on a funded project supporting your aca training.

That means that following your actual interests in academia requires you to either be:

1.  Extremely interested in something that has a bang-for-$$$$ aspect, such as research that leads to drug discovery, for instance.

2.  You follow your interests into a truly academic area and know that you will never get funding beyond for teaching undergrads the basics, and will probably never get funding that allows you to secure a good track record for becoming a hired as tenure track faculty who might even have a hope of being promoted to tenured faculty, because yeah, money is what talks regardless of your research. Sorry. been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or isn’t in the US. 

3.  You have well-off parents who support your indulgences and via their network plus the network at the select set of east coast posh universities, provide you with the correct(tm) social connections so you can at least get employed in an adjacent field (e.g., in publishing, at a museum, etc.) in select high ranked cities.

Otherwise, you just cannot work on your own interests in academia, at least not in the anglo-american academic sphere. And this is the hard truth that is never told to most graduate students.

So it feels ... interesting and disturbing that I have found my own avenues for doing my own self-supported/self-funded work of interest

and I don’t know how I feel to be honest.

because all of this is totally in the “gone rogue” mode.

8. What's the most fun and least fun about your process?

Hmmm I'd say most fun is when I get to the point where I can do some real problem-solving in a drawing. When I really have to think about what combination of colors to use where, the level of detail I should get to, the exact way to render something. Least fun is probably when I'm just beginning to make pen marks on top of my pencil sketch, it's just more stressful than fun.

This is another question that's more geared toward digital artists haha, here's what I could scrounge:

13. How long do you usually take on a piece?

Bro I don't know, everybody asks me this but I ALWAYS forget to time myself lol. I think that one drawing I showed in another answer, the one of all the people walking out of the tunnel, took about forty hours total? I do not know for sure, but I think that was my general estimate. But yeah, back when I used to draw all the time, I'd sit for hours on end drawing, and depending on the drawing it would take me between a few days or a few months.

21. Something you would like to improve on

I get a little insecure seeing people being so good at cute stylized cartoon styles instead of being boring and only doing realism like me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE drawing realistically, but I'd like to improve my stylized drawing skills. And my digital art skills in general. I find traditional drawing so much easier than digital drawing, but digital is much more convenient for an online platform.

in which annabeth is in a grocery store and accidentally leaves her phone with the most attractive boy she’s ever seen,, percabeth,, accidentally deleted the ask lol

Annabeth has never been someone to particularly enjoy shopping. It’s too boring in her opinion, just walking around a store with people that seem just as done with life as her, and she usually does whatever it takes to get out of it.

When she gets to the point that even she can’t scrap up something to eat out of her fridge, she decides it’s probably for the best that she goes shopping just this once. Annabeth doesn’t even bother changing out of her clothes, just throwing a sweater to protect against the biting wind and calling it a day.

The walk through the grocery store is exactly as she expects it to be. It’s entirely too cold in the produce section, and she doesn’t think that she’s ever been so bored in her entire life. She tries to hurry along as fast as she can, but there seems to be someone standing in front of every single item that she needs, so it takes a lot longer than it probably should.

It’s not until she’s dumping an armful of items onto a conveyor belt that she decides grocery shopping may not be as bad as she initially thought because the boy standing at the register is downright beautiful.

Annabeth’s fingers twitch as though compelled to pull her phone out of her pocket and take a picture to send to Piper – Piper would no doubt appreciate the art that is the boy’s face – but she restrains herself. There’s still two people in front of her so she settles for letting her eyes trace over his figure while he’s distracted.

His hair is black and looks incredibly soft, and she wants nothing more than to run her fingers through it. She can see his side profile, and his jawline is sharp enough to cut. Stubble lines his chin, and the muscles of his arms ripple with each movement to scan an item. Annabeth is by no means looking subtly, but he doesn’t acknowledge it.

Annabeth is so deep in thought, biting her lip, that she doesn’t even notice him looking up until his eyes lock on hers. She jumps at the shocking gaze he gives her; his eyes are a vibrant green, and even from where she stands, she can see the dark green outline of his irises. He appears a bit shocked, his movements helping his customer faltering slightly before he resumes and looks away from her with no reaction.

Her face flushes deeply, and she considers leaving her stuff and simply walking away before deciding that would be even more damaging to her ego. It’s not long at all before she’s at the register and the boy – Percy, she reads – starts grabbing her items.

“So,” Annabeth starts, biting her lip. She wants to say something to ease the tension she can feel quickly building. “I don’t know if you saw, but…”

He smiles tightly, interrupting her with the piercing beep of the scanner. “I saw.”

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking at you, though. I was just–” She cuts off, aware of how lame her excuse seems.

“Looking through me?” he suggests kindly.

She opens her mouth to respond but snaps it shut when she notices the gleam in his eyes. She brushes her hair behind her ear, suddenly aware of what she’s wearing, before she places her phone down on the counter just so she has something else to do than look at him.

“Sure,” she says. “Let’s go with that.”

“Was the image behind me fascinating?” he asks, lazy and amused.

“It was absolutely enthralling,” she says sarcastically.

“Yes, my… not-face tends to do that to people.”

Annabeth laughs lightly. “Your face is not that good,” she lies.

“That’s why you were staring at me the second you set your stuff down, right?”

“I was not.”

He raises an eyebrow.

“It’s not my fault,” she defends. “You have a nice jawline.” He pauses his movements to blink at her. “Jawline?”

“Uh.”

“It’s alright,” he tells her, resuming the scanning. She notices that he seems to be going slower than he was minutes ago, and she tries not to think much of it. “I don’t mind when cute people stare at me.”

“Oh? Do you get lots of cute people staring at you?”

“None as cute as you,” he says. His eyes burn into hers, and she’s confident that he’s just as captivated by her as she is by him. “You’re something else.”

“You can tell that from a minute of conversation?”

“I’m good with words,” he says.

That, you are, she thinks. He’s making her feel butterflies in her stomach with nothing more than the simplest of words. He’s finished scanning her things, and her smile drops when he tells her the total, disappointed that their fleeting interaction is almost over.

She grabs the bag from his hand once her card goes through, and her fingers tingle as they touch his slightly. Annabeth half expects him to say something more, but he doesn’t say anything else. He just smiles kindly, and she takes a step back.

“Have a good day,” he says.

“You too,” she says as she turns. Though she’s disappointed, she can’t help the excitement that’s coursing through her. Annabeth’s already thinking of if she should go back the next day under the guise of forgetting something, and again the day after. It’s silly but it was genuinely one of the best interactions she’s had in a while.

She’s halfway down the block when she decides to text Piper about the attractive boy she’s just met, so she moves the bags to one hand to grab the phone from her hoodie’s pocket with the other. She’s thinking of how to word it as she reaches into the pocket, and–

The phone isn’t there.

She stops dead in her tracks as panic begins to take over. She’d had it when she started talking to Percy. She set it down on the counter before paying and then… she had never picked it up.

“Great,” she hisses, turning to look over her shoulder. It only takes her two seconds to decide she has to go back. She’s already imagining how stupid she’s going to look for leaving her phone right in front of him, and she really didn’t feel like embarrassing herself any further in front of him.

When she talks back in the sliding doors of the small store, he’s no longer by the registers. Instead, he’s wandering the aisles, seemingly organizing some of the shelves. She desperately doesn’t want to, but he’s the easiest way to find her phone, so she accosts him slowly.

She’s about to tap him on the shoulder when he turns around, his eyes lighting up with recognition. “There you are! I was expecting you.”

She shifts her feet. “Yeah, I left my phone here on accident and just need it back.”

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out what is identical to her phone, waving it in her face. “You mean this phone?”

“That’s the one,” she confirms. She reaches towards it but he pulls away before she can grab it.

“How do I know this is yours?” he asks teasingly.

“You watched me set it down earlier.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says. “A dear customer pointed it out several minutes after you left, actually. I have no way to know if it’s really yours.”

She scowls, trying to snatch it. He just moves further. “Give me my phone, Percy.”

He laughs at her attempt to say his name scathingly. “What’s your name?”

She crosses her arms. “Annabeth.”

“Well, Annabeth, I’m going to need you to prove that this is your phone.”

She sighs, exasperated, but he says it with a smile on his face so she knows he’ll give it back soon enough. She decides to play along with his game. “How do you expect me to do that?”

He hums, pretending to think. “Perhaps you can give me your number so I can call it from my phone. You know, to see if it’s really yours?”

“Subtle.”

“I wasn’t aware we were going with subtle today, Annabeth. I mean, the way you were staring at me earlier wasn’t very subtle.”

Her lips pull up in a smile. “I guess I have to give you my number then. So you can make sure it’s really my phone because you totally didn’t see me set it down earlier.” Percy chuckles, and she finds she really appreciates the way he makes the room seem brighter. “I guess so.”

And she does. He wastes no time in putting her number in his phone as she whispers the numbers into his ear, and it doesn’t go unnoticed when he saves her as a contact. He presses call, and, of course, her phone starts to ring in his hand.

She snatches it from him, and he lets her this time. She picks it up and slides the bar to answer. “Hello?”

“Is this Annabeth? From the grocery store?”

“It is,” she says, eyeing him with a grin that matches his. “Am I good to have my phone back now?”

“Not quite. I just need one more piece of information. To make sure this is really your phone and all.”

“Giving a ten digit phone number wasn’t enough?”

“Odds of guessing it are too high,” he says.

“You must not be good at permutations then.” “I don’t know what a permutation is.”

Annabeth bites her lip to stifle a giggle. “What did you have to ask?”

“Well, now that I have your phone number, I was wondering if you’d like to grab dinner sometime. My treat.”

“Dinner?”

“Or lunch, or breakfast. I’ll even do brunch.” With that, he hangs up the call so that he can step closer and talk to her directly. “It’s your choice, Annabeth. And you really don’t have to if you don’t want to.”

“Who says I don’t want to?”

“I’m just giving you the option to say no.”

He’s looking at her with such hope, and she doesn’t think she has it in her to say no because he’s gorgeous and kind and has an amazing sense of humor. She thinks that it has the chance to turn into something so full of love if she gives it a chance.

“I’d love to,” she says.

“Breakfast, lunch, or brunch?”

“What happened to dinner?”

“We can do all four of them,” he says.

She grins, her chest blossoming with warmth at this perfect boy standing before her. “I’m holding you to that.”

Hey! I’m in love with your art style and has been a fan since YOI. When I first your Yuri on ice fanart, I started learning to draw(I’m not anywhere near good) and I want to learn digital art. If you are ok, can you give some tips on how you learn anatomy and how you draw faces? Anatomy - This is probably terrible advice from an actual art perspective, but since you're asking me--don't worry about it if you struggle with a whole body. Whole bodies are hard, there are a lot of parts, and that much more you have to worry about regarding proportions and individual parts and posing and everything. It takes me 5-10 times longer to draw a full body than it does a bust.

So if you're just starting out and feeling frustrated about that...just focus on busts. That is, head/neck, shoulders if you want, maybe chest, but don't worry about anything else. So many artists just draw this, and for a reason, it's so much easier to manage. Faces and heads are challenging enough by themselves without worrying about shoulder width and arms and clothing and all that. It's totally fine to get comfy baking cookies, before baking a whole wedding cake, if u know what i mean.

Faces - I think some of my other responses above mention trying to see what you like about other people's art styles, but I'll get more in depth here. Say you really like someone's art, and want to draw like them. I personally don't find "copying the entire face" very helpful, because it doesn't let you analyze what it is you like, and doesn't help you develop anything of your own, and can come dangerously close to straight out copying them. So, it helps to be specific.

So say you like how this person draws eyes. What part of the eyes? The shape of the eyelashes? The pupil-to-iris ratio? The details of the irises, how they do light (or lack thereof) reflected in them? Inner corners, outer corners? Are these things they do for all of their characters, or are they ways that they emphasize traits in specific characters?

Another example: noses. How 3D vs 2D are they (many manga-inspired styles have very simplified noses, sometimes just a line or dot). Which angles do you like, how are they different? Do they draw the nostrils, or the line defining the outside of the nostrils? Does the way they draw noses differ between characters, and if so how?

I find that having awareness of these things, and thinking about them, helps you figure out which things you want to try to draw yourself!

Also, I know you said digital art specifically, but these all apply to non-digital as well. Digital is just another medium, but drawing is drawing!

I like to draw digitally as well and your art-style is a huge inspiration for me. So I wanted to ask if you have any work in progress videos or pictures? Or if you could explain your process in general? Like, are you using a sketch layer underneath, with how many layers are you normally working, what kind of brushes do you use or any tips overall to improve digital painting?

But also omg thank youuu for this amazing ask like this is for real the kind of ask I've always wanted to get, where a total stranger is interested in my process XD So yeah don't worry about asking a lot of questions, they were great and I loved them!

Also I'm super flattered that my art has inspired you in your own digital art journey and I hope the stuff I say here can also help somewhat! This will get pretty long so sorry in advance everyone for making you scroll so much cause for some reason the read more option doesn't work on mobile :/

But anyway to answer your questions!

Sadly I don't have videos but I do have some pics I'll share. This is actually my second attempt at answering this because before I was going to use some WIP pics of the Majid drawing as example but then I didn't want to because it was in black and white and color is kind of one of the main things I like to emphasize in my art so I wanted to talk about it in the example XD Then I started a couple new drawings and was taking pics of those but I got super artblocked, but luckily I just finished one out of the blue that I can use. Okay so... I started answering this, again, and it was getting way too long and rambly so I'm gonna try to keep it simple this time and maybe I can elaborate more another time if you're still interested/ if anyone else wants know X'D

My process in general: I always start by making a simple basic background to work on, just fill it in and add some blotches of color. Then on a new layer I just start painting the subject, no sketch, so again just laying down some colors (I usually take whatever color in the bg is closest to skin tone and adjust the new color from there) and I just start blocking some shapes in aproximately the right places to start defining where things will be and how they fit together and just go from there. It's hard to explain it more cause that's kinda it, I just paint until things look like they're supposed to or at least visually appealing enough XD I add or adjust whatever colors seem necessary along the way (in this particular drawing I left the darker values until way too late which I don't recommend) and just refine and refine and refine things and add as many or as few details as I feel like, working on everything simmultaneously bit by bit.

Layers: like I mentioned before there's no sketch, and I try to use as few layers as possible so usually I'll have about 3-5. One for the basic background, one to three (though sometimes I merge them) additional layers for more background effects/colors/value fixes that I usually add later in the process, and I try to have just one for the subject. Sometimes I have one or two more if I'm feeling too hesitant but I always merge them in the end.

Brushes: I only use one brush at 50% opacity the whole time for everything. It's a squarish/rectangular brush that has some sort of jagged edges and a bit of a watercolory texture.

Tips: so this part is especially hard cause like.. I feel like any tips I could give are only applicable to drawing portraits and even then it'd be for doing it in the particular way that I prefer.. Like for example I could say it's best to work on every area at the same time and never spend too long one thing before moving on to the next but.. some people actually prefer finishing the eyes completely before moving on to the nose for example you know? So honestly the main thing I'll say is kinda to just experiment with a lot of methods and styles and see what works or doesn't work for you. Something that I think always helped me a lot was watching speedpaints of people who were more skilled than me and had a distinct style, just literally watch how they did their thing and every once in a while I might notice something I'd be interested in trying for myself and yeah with practice and experience you just kinda figure out what kind of things you not only like seeing but actually want in your own art. Like years ago I used to sketch but then I saw enough videos of people painting without sketching that I wanted to try it and I realized it's just more fun and makes more sense to me that way. So yeah try lots of different things and see what works for you and what you want to incorporate into your own art style!

Some more standard digital art tips I could give I guess are like.. the thing I said about not spending too much time on just one area (if it applies to your prefered process XD). Flip the drawing every now and then to catch stuff that's off. Stay zoomed out as much as possible and when you do zoom in for details always keep an eye on how the bigger picture's looking. Take your time finding or arranging a good reference pic that really inspires you cause it'll save you time and frustration later. And aaa idk I could say more but I don't think it's that informative or helpful, and all of this is probably really basic obvious stuff anyway and this is long enough as it is so yeah I'll leave it there...

I hope any of this can help in some way or that I've at least answered your questions in a satisfying enough way haha And finally here are some of the WIP pics I took. Where you can see some parts of the process. I did a lot more after that last pic but yeah at that point it's just about fixing little things, refining and adding details, but there you can see the color adjustment thing I usually do as the very last step (though not for this pic). I don't always have to do it, and there are probably times when I shouldn't, but I almost always like to do it anyway and that's why my colors look so exaggerated and bright XD I usually make the midtones more red and/or magenta, the shadows more blue, and the highlights more yellow (and sometimes a bit cyan) but if you wanna try something like that it's definitely fun to experiment with the different color possibilities ;u;

And yeah that's it for now! I'm sorry this is so long, and this was the short version lol I hope you like the answers at least a fraction of how much I loved the questions X'D

(BTW, I’m working on drawing canon Jinx and fighter!Jinx side by side so I’ll be posting that sometime today or tomorrow. I’m realizing that I don’t think Silco would very much approve of her attire if he actually got to choose it, so her outfit is gonna be a bit different until she gets out. I’m slowly working at the next fic too. Trying to figure out if I should post what I have rn as a first chapter or finish it and then post them - not sure how long it’s gonna be tbh).

Jinx is very emotionally detached from people. I’m still trying to figure out if she and Ekko have reconciled by the time Vi and Caitlyn show up, but it honestly won’t be much different either way. Maybe a bit more stable with Ekko around, but that’s it. 

Regardless, she’s used to being alone and she’s also kind of scared of Vi finding her. You have to remember that this Vi knocked her tf out (by accident, but she doesn’t know that). Part of her, like she thought with Ekko, is thinking that Vi has come to kill her (for killing their family), while another part of her is just scared of being close to people because she’s scared they’ll leave or betray her. She’s more of a runner in this fic than a fighter when the fight comes to her (unless it’s Silco’s people - that’s a whole other story). It’s absolutely a control thing. 

She still goes off the deep end at seeing Caitlyn with Vi (not that she was very stable to begin with). However, in comparison to canon Jinx, she’s more prone to hurting herself versus hurting others. Being alone in a cell with very little stimulation she’s learned to hurt herself - pulling at her hair, hitting herself, etc - as a means of coping. We saw a little of this in Powder’s breakdown in Act I, but it’s more extensive in this AU. There’s a bit more to their reunion considering how volatile in general Jinx is, but I’ll leave it as this for now :)))

Vi is really really sad. I needed to say that. 

When jinx gets her tattoos what meaning does she have for em? And whats ur opinion on the reason she got em in canon?

Honestly, I always thought Jinx’s tattoos in the game were clouds, not smoke, so I’m gonna say in this au they’re clouds (though they’ll look the same). I’ve got a specific scene in mind for this tbh. In canon, I think she did it as memoriam. Basically, a way of grieving (and reminding herself of) the death of Powder’s love for Vi. Silco has done his best to push the narrative that Vi left her, that she betrayed Jinx, and the tattoo was meant to reinforce and remind her of that. 

Does fighter!jinx ever get the necklace/choker/whatever it is that arcane!jinx wears? Or does she refuse to ever have anything on her neck again?

I think she’d refuse to put anything around her neck that would cover the scars, almost like an FU. First, to Silco, and then to anyone who ever thought she worked for him willingly. In the future, she’d probably wear something similar to what in-game!Jinx wears - the bullet necklace with a thin string wrapped around her neck a few times. It barely covers her neck at all.

Edit: I JUST REALIZED THAT THERE MOTHER HAD A SIMILAR NECKLACE TO JINX. I want her to have it now just for that.

Oh, YES, she absolutely goes by Jinx for the spite factor (also for other reasons too). She wants Silco to know she’s coming, she wants him to know that it’s the monster he created, his Jinx, that is going to destroy him. It’s easier for her to stay in that mindset rather than weave in and out of it, so she does go by just Jinx for a long while. I feel like she considers “Powder” as a name, an identity, that is extremely precious (bordering on innocent) to her and she wants to protect it. As a result, while she hurts and kills, she does it in Jinx’s name, not Powder’s. Though Powder is pretty blood thirsty herself. 

Oh! And before i forget- the shock collar, how’s that charged? Cause those things need a power source to function, and since it cant just be removed anymore im guessin it has some form of strong/sustainable power source?

While the collar isn’t removable, some of it’s parts are. There are components that need to be regularly replaced, including the shimmer injections and the power source for some of the collar’s other functions (the shock being one of them). She sees the doctor a minimum of once a week for both restraint maintenance and enhancement “treatment”. 

N on the line of the collar and cuffs, does she manage to get those off quickly on her own, or does she have to run around for a while with em on? And if tis like that, is the shock collar still active? Could she still be shocked with it?

The restraints are not going to come off all at once and she will struggle with them (considering the ones on her neck and legs have no keys). You’ll see :)))))

She did initially take 5 (the 6th one was what caused the explosion in the workshop). I noticed there were at least 4 in the breakdown scene, but she used 3 of them in the monkey bomb. I’m honestly not sure where the rest went, because there’s 2 floating around somewhere but no one knows where. Personally, I’m somewhere between it being an error on Riot’s part and/or the other two showing up somewhere down the line in season 2. 

(Also can i jus say, i def gets jinx bein a long range fighter in canon n it lowkey fucks with my head tryna picture fighter!jinx punchin n kickin in the pits skdhdjg. Like vi? Vi its easy to picture cause its vi but like,,, it jus does not mesh with jinx in my head lol)

And no it messes with my head too. Though, even in Arcane, she is still pretty good at short range. It’s just not her specialty. But it is half of the reason why she almost immediately switches up fighting styles after getting out. Jinx realizes pretty quickly that her usual methods in the pits aren’t going to work, so she adapts.  Short range, her signature style is essentially to trap them and... pick them off one by one (imagine those scenes where there’s a group of people that are disappearing one by one into the shadows and everyone is scared/confused and concerned about who's going to be next). 

Dramatic AF

I like to imagine she does her best to avoid fighting in an open area or in the light, but is a lot more vicious when she’s forced to (it’s when the “punch and kick them until they die” attitude becomes very apparent).

What are some tips or what is some advice you could give me on anatomy, use of color or digital drawing generally? Hi!!! First of all, thank you so much for your sweet comment it means so much to hear that 🥺

So my bIGGEST TIPS I can possibly give (this is gonna be long I apologize in advance):

1. always always always use references.

I cannot stress this tip enough.

Whether it‘s for a certain pose you want to draw: you can go on Pinterest/google to find poses, clothing ideas, hairstyles, lighting, scenery. use references for EVERYTHING. no matter what people say it is not cheating. Sometimes we luck out and we magically draw the poses straight from our brain, but honestly that’s rare.

And it doesnt all have to be from real life. You can take inspiration from other artist whose styles you look up to/admire. For me that’s viria94(Instagram), aleikats, alexiakhodanian(twitter), spidertams(instagram) and many others! Obviously you don’t want to copy your inspirations, but you can learn so much from just observing their artwork :) Your inspirations will most likely change dramatically overtime because your art style will grow as you continue to improve. These inspirations are going to be a mashup of things you like about each individual style. And eventually, you’ll learn how to incorporate some of those elements into your own art which in turn: helps you find your own voice/style with your artwork.

but also, don’t forget to not copy them exactly lol. It’s one thing to “copy” an art style as a way to personally practice in your own time (which is totally okay to do!) But there is definitely a fine line between practicing/outright copying and claiming it as your own work. I hope that made sense???

2. Redraws

this is something I only just started doing, but it has helped my artwork improve immensely. I redraw scenes from shows and movies that I love (which I will get to this tip in a second). And then because the scene is already set for you, it helps you not only practice anatomy (especially if you’re referencing real people), but also lighting, setting up compositions, and in general practicing this over time will help you refine your art style!

3. Draw from life

Not everyone has a realistic art style, nor do they need to have one. However, it is important to understand the ”rules” before you can break them. And what I mean by that is that by practicing realistic anatomy, you get to understand proportions/how the body works in relation to itself. Because even though everyone is shaped differently from each other, there is still an overall similarity we all have with one another. And honestly all you have to do will go into my next point:

4. watch tutorials

Cannot even tell you how many tutorials I have watched over the years. I will forever be on YouTube trying to learn how to do something. this honestly goes with the references section because it just helps so so so much. Having someone show you exactly what to do is so beneficial because they’ll move you through the exact motions you need to do to get to the end result. I remember when I first started really getting into art, I loved drawing realistic eyes and lips. so I watched tutorials of that all the time and now it’s pretty much second nature to me.

since you asked about the use of color, anatomy, and digital drawing… this is gonna be golden for helping you okay. I might have taken a color theory class a couple quarters ago at school… but trust me I’m still winging the whole color thing. howEVER, tutorials will be your best friend when it comes to these things I pROMISE.

5. TAKE BREAKS

please for the love of all things do not push yourself to be creative when your mind refuses to do so. some of our best work/ideas appear when we’re bored or doing something else entirely.

taking a break means go do something else you enjoy. For me that’s: playing my favorite video game, watching my favorite show/movie, reading a book, talking to my friends or family, baking, writing. just do something else!

the moment you try to force yourself to finish a drawing when you’re really not in the mindset to do so (unless this thing you’re drawing is for school… that’s an entirely different thing trust me lol), you’re just going to lead yourself into an art block. So many artists pressure themselves to draw everyday because yeah it can lead to improvement, but back in my anne with an e days when I felt pressured to put out fan art consistently for the show, it led me to what was probably my longest art block EVER. and it sucks because I ender up losing the inspiration to draw for a show that I loved a lot. So always remember to pace yourself and take care of yourself before anything else <3

6. Draw what you love

so often we feel pressured to draw what others want us to draw. But that shouldn’t matter. yes, it’s good to be aware of the people that may look at your art/follow your art account, but that should never dictate the work that you create.

for some people they love drawing original characters and creating stories, others might only love drawing animals, some people have certain themes in their artwork, and others, like me, purely like drawing fan art.

when you draw something you love, your artwork will always turn out better because that means you’re having fun making it.

and for me personally, I cannot whip out original characters for the life of me unless it’s for a grade LOL. So when it comes to drawing, that’s why I stick to fan art.

NOW I KNOW THIS WAS SUPER SUPER LONG but I really hoped this helped in some sense!!!

imma start off by saying that i am still figuring out *my* artstyle and i find my art to be very, very, very inconsistent at this point. i do have some specific traits that i guess kinda characterize my art and make it ✨mine✨ but i don’t think i have a super recognizable style, working on it tho ☝️ hopefully one day i’ll post something and someone’ll go “OHH THAT WAS TOTALLY DRAWN BY ANGIE I CAN TELL FROM THE STYLE” but that day is probably centuries away-

rather than calling it my art style, i’m using “my art traits”, and the process of finding them and standardizing them in my brain was totally done through experimenting! and probably the most important thing for me is lighting and shadows, and i am super inspired by the painter caravaggio and i’ve done studies of his painting ever since i was in school. my mom went to art school and graduated from an important art academy so i’ve kind of always done studies on artistic movements and stuff like that bc my house is literally falling down from the amount of art books my mom collected over the years since she was a teen 💀💀 still got some of her original school textbooks as well. and that’s where i draw most of my inspiration really! i am mostly inspired by impressionism and macchiaioli as far as movements go. also was pretty obsessed with doing studies of degas’ ballerinas some years ago when i was still doing traditional art and painting with actual paint LOL but that’s how you learn! through being a “copycat”!

i feel like there’s such a huge issue in the art community with “copying/referencing” when really it’s the only fucking way to learn, period. how do you learn anatomy? by copying a real human body. how do you learn how to paint lights and shadows? by copying how light hits objects in real life. how do you learn how to paint backgrounds? by copying real environments. i’ve never really felt like a “copycat” per se bc imho referencing IS fundamental and it’s impossible to learn without it, anyone who says otherwise is straight up lying LOL or trying to make themselves look ✨cool and gifted that they never need references✨ or whatever

but yeah experiments experiments and more experiments and trying out techniques and following tutorials over and over again until you start to pick up on things and do them automatically and give them your own twist by more experimenting, and boom, art style

Aforementioned long ask post please excuse me while i try to figure out tumblr's new text editor. I’ll get into the art meme questions first and then the rest at the end.

Ok first of all thank you all for sending in questions! Giving me an excuse to talk hehe. I’ll address these in number order. Here’s a link to the ask meme for reference but also I’ll restate the question for ease of reading.

1. When did you get into art?

Super cliche answer but I don’t remember a time where I WASN’T the weird art kid! I started keeping a dedicated sketchbook when I was about 12? But here’s a page from my kindergarten journal about what I want to be when I grow up.

2. What art-related sites have you ever signed up for? 

LOL this is a weird question. Not sure why so many people want to know. Anyways I definitely had a dA. more than one dA account. I used to browse oekakis when I was a kid but I think I was only signed up to some small ones that internet friends owned. What else...? Mangabullet,Tegakie, Paintberri, iscribble back when that was a thing, instagram if that COUNTs, I used to post art on livejournal and dreamwidth too. Patreon, I guess. Gumroad, inprnt, bigcartel, storenvy all for selling stuff.

In terms of resources.. I have a schoolism account that I’m sharing with friends. Used to take classes on coursera for free. I signed up to textures.com for work recently haha. I can’t remember if I ever had an account on posemaniacs. Did they have accounts...? I definitely used to visit all the time.

3. Show us your oldest piece of art you have on hand.

Alright here’s me actually logging into my old deviantart account. These are from September 2008 So I was 13 years old. I don’t have a deviantart account from before then because 13 was the required age for having an account and I didn’t want to lie about my age because I wanted people to be impressed by how young yet clearly incredible at art I was LOL.

4. What defines your artistic style?

You guys are probably more equipped to answer this than me but uh... I wanna say... Focus on colors. And... a slightly heavy hand? Like confident... not always well-considered mark making HAH...

Also I think I have a pretty healthy mix of american comics/manga influences. I feel like people who are into american comics always think my art is too manga and people who are into anime/manga always think my art is too american. And I’m taking that as a good sign.

5. Do you practice other styles/have you tried other styles in the past?

I like to think I switch it up a bunch! I mean, these are pretty different, right?

I think I’ve mentioned this before but one thing I really took away from art school is that, for an illustrator at least, art style shouldn’t be consistent. Your greatest weapon is changing the aspects of your style based on the task, the emotions and message you want to illustrate etc. So depending on the project I’m working on, the fandom I’m drawing for, whether I want something to be funny or serious or dramatic, I’ll change things about my style all the time.

One thing I don’t rly post on here is really tight polished work and that’s because I do that for my day job haha. If you’re not paying me... I’m probably not gonna color in the lines.

6. What levels of artistic education have you had?

I have a whole ass diploma LOL. Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration. from the Rhode Island School of Design. And I had a great college experience tbh. Besides the student loans. If any of you guys are thinking about art school feel free to e-mail or message me questions or concerns, I’ll be happy to help. Be as honest as I can be.

8. What is your favourite piece that you have done?

Well, obviously this is gonna change all the time and generally it’s gonna be my most recent piece LOL. So yeah, why the hell not. I’ll say it’s this one. I have a pretty short memory which I count as a blessing for an artist. I don’t dwell that long on older work and it keeps me moving forward.

10. What do you like most about your art?

I like that it’s something that only I would make! I had this thought fairly recently and I wrote it down in my sketchbook, it’s pretty cheesy and rambling but it felt revolutionary at the time:

So yeah. I like my art best when it’s the most me and for me. And I like it least when it feels like I’m just making something for social media or for other people’s expectations or whatever.

14. What do you like drawing the most?

Kids in baggy clothing are like my go-to LOL idk if that’s obvious. but also I like being challenged so lately I’ve really loved drawing multi-character compositions, environments, weird angles, etc.

oh i LOVE drawing the underside of shoes lol. And bandages. People that are kinda beat up.. I think it comes from getting a bunch of cuts all the time. I’m always patching myself up and I want to patch characters up too.

15. What do you like drawing the least?

mmm I try to find something to like in every drawing but lets see... I don’t like doing commissions of people’s dogs. Just because it’s normally like... a family friend and my mom volunteered me without my consent and I don’t even really know what they’re expecting me to draw and I don’t even get to meet the dog. Also I’m not that great at dog anatomy. Trying to learn though.

18. What is your purpose for drawing?

This could have a million answers! Uhhh to GIT GOOD??? But also to express myself... and also to make money... I mean it depends on what the drawing IS. I draw fanart mostly to connect to people in the fandom so if you ever see me drawing fanart please take it as like an open invitation to talk to me about the character haha. 

20. How would you rank your art? (poor, mediocre, good, etc.)

Good!!! I have a lot of self-confidence primarily born out of ignorance and a short attention span. If I don’t think too hard about how many other artists are mindblowingly unfathombly good... its easy to think I’m good too! LOL

In all seriousness though, I think the opinion a person has of their art is like a crazy balancing act, right? Like you have to think you suck enough to want to get better but also you have to think you’re good enough to not want to give up. I think we’re all walking that line, I know I am! But also I’m a glass half-full type of person so. Most of the time I feel good about it.

22. List at least one of your “artspirations.”

This is a good question because I’ve been trying and failing to put together one of those “influence map” memes for like a full month now. What’s giving me a hard time is I feel like none of these are actually really obvious “““influences”““ in my art? Like it’s hard to see a lot of them in the work I make...? But idk maybe you guys’ll see what I can’t.

And these are just a couple! God there’s so many more. I could talk about other artists for ages, from all different genres of art. Daumier, Rockwell like every illustrator out there, Dana Gibson, Alex Toth, Hiroshi Yoshida, a lot of the Brandywine School. Lots of current working artists too, Karl Kerschl, frikkin Masashi Kishimoto lol, Jake Wyatt, Richie Pope, Edouard Caplain, Matt Cook, Sachin Teng, - lots of big internet artists, Sophie Li, Freddy Carrasco, Milliofish, Angela Sung... like all my friends from art school too. I could just keep going but I’ll stop for now lol.

24. Do you have a shameful art past? (recolour sprite comics, tracing art, etc.)

I mean if that’s how we’re defining shameful?? sure LOL. It’s not sprite comics but I used to do pokemon sprite recolors all the time. And I used to trace manga panels and color them... Granted this was all when I was like under 12 yrs old so it’s not even embarrassing. Can you really call it shameful when a 7 year old wets the bed or whatever? Not really. In fact some of these are cool as fuck. Look

25. Draw a picture!

I used to get a lot of compliments for drawing people smiling lol but I don’t think I’ve drawn a lot of smiling lately.. here’s proof I’ve still got it.

I think a lot of artists on social media talk about the struggle of making art but imo not enough people talk about the joy! Like I know it’s corny but. I really meant what I said at the beginning of that sketchbook about re-contextualizing art around process and progress > product and perfection. I think its super important..! The strength of messy, unfinished, and energetic art! For the feeling of it, for the love it!

Hi! I totally have the answer for digital stuff on my faq lol. But in terms of drawing on paper.. it varies! I tend to use sketchbooking and any on-paper doodling I do as a way to loosen up/warm-up or experiment. But right now my go-to aresenal is:

not EXACTly sure which inking you referring to from my sketchbook but if I had to take a guess it'd probably be the kuretake no55. That's been my main inker, lately. Great for sketching with the thin end too.
