Having just rewatched Castiel’s confession, I’m overwhelmed by emotions, naturally, but also thinking about why Castiel thinks he can never have his happiness.

He’s watched Dean as closely as angelically possible for twelve years. He was in Purgatory with Dean. He watched Dean and Benny get close. He’s watched Dean flirt with everyone around him. He’s watched Dean check out guys. He’s listened to Dean ramble on about Dr. Sexy and band members and almost-exclusively male actors. He’s listened to Dean’s references about gay power and/or suicidal couples. He’s catalogued Dean’s obsessions with male dominated movies and books. He’s catalogued Dean’s fantasized lifestyles like cowboys.

The point is that he obviously knows Dean is bisexual, so what was actually holding him back?

I think it’s just the pure simplicity of lacking self-worth. He’s sees the complete world in Dean, absolutely all of its intrigue and beauty and splendor. But him? He feels the exact same way about himself as Dean feels about himself. In Castiel’s mind, how can he, the renegade angel with a “crack in his chassis” who never seems to do anything right and has disappointed Dean more times he’s been brought back to life, ever possibly measure up? Sure, Dean values him as a friend, a good friend, his best friend, his only friend, but Dean’s life only has room for Sam. Since Dean doesn’t look for a romantic relationship, he clearly doesn’t want one, and who is Castiel to push the envelope and add complications to Dean’s life? He’s not worth that. Not a chance whatsoever.

If he only just paid a little closer attention to Dean’s prayers…

Yes, absolutely!

I’ll just start by saying that the tones for BoB and TP are much more similar to each other than either is to GK, so with that alone, it’s understandable that you might be like, eh, about GK. And it’s totally okay to not like something! But since you asked… :)

For me, the differences between the WW2 content and GK is what makes it more appealing. Even tho all of the shows are based off of journalistic works, GK feels more so, I think because it doesn’t have the hero-lens BoB and TP have. I like that. The characters are overtly flawed and sometimes hard to like initially, and it feels like a closer rendering to real life than the other two shows. I think that the creators of GK had to handle its contents differently, because OIF was not like, a net good? Or any good, really. And we as viewers know this, but the characters are, at most, conflicted in their feelings about it. And, for me, this conflict is what makes it so, how you say, JUICY.

The biggest thing for me is the characters. This show is fucking PACKED with dialogue and I watched it (voluntarily) many times with captions to pick up on all the little tidbits that are left all over the place in background dialogue, in the credits, and wherever else. It all paints a really detailed picture of these men in this very specific real-life situation that basically only happened once. I like the strong personalities, and I like the way in which they’re right, and wrong, and charming, and hard to swallow all at the same time. That’s what speaks to me, personally.

I’ll also just tack on that I understand why you might not find it compelling. I think it’s worth it to go into it with a different expectation than you might have with BoB and TP. For one, it doesn’t have the same story structure the other shows have. There isn’t as much material to pull from; where BoB and TP had years’ worth of stories to sort through and structure into a more conventional plot, GK takes place over like several weeks. In this way, it feels a bit more like a documentary, or maybe a series of related vignettes? If that makes sense. For two, outside of like two or three officers, there aren’t real good guys or bad guys. For the most part, everyone is just doing what they think they have to do to survive moment-to-moment. I think “how do I not get fucked?” Is a better internal logic for this series than any conventional narrative one that might be closer to, “here’s the problem. Okay, how do I solve that and progress the story” which the other two shows can more easily use.

Okay, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to talk for this long, and I feel like this is all over the place. But the take-away here is, I like it because it feels more real/realistic, the characters are extremely flawed and that makes them more life-like and interesting, and I find a show driven by characters more compelling than one driven by a more conventional plot.

i unfortunately don’t have a name for it yet 😭. i honestly don’t have many ideas set in stone for this, it was just a little guy i drew up that was inspired by something i was watching. i am open to name suggestions tho!

as for a backstory, what i currently have is his parents sold him off when he was a toddler to a group of human scientist studying something related to mobians (a really funny way of saying “we want to run unethical experiments on your kid, you cool with that?”) for a large sum of money. they didn’t want their mutated fox kit, but this group did so why not just give him up? and for that much money, it wasn’t a hard choice

so no, he did not know sonic beforehand. speaking of the blue hog, sonic does know amy and knuckles and the restoration is still a thing in this au. how? idk, i just want it like that. it’s mostly there because sonic leaves tails with the restoration while they try to figure out what to do with the kid. sonic does end up taking him in, he just needs to find a permanent place to live first

the implants are what i’m stuck on. all i know rn is that they artificially enhance his intelligence, speed, strength, hearing, and durability. i’m debating giving him another ability (sorta something like surge and kit’s abilities but not something elemental) but idk.

maybe i have this more planned out than i thought- anyway yeah traumatized, clingy little guy who will bite if provoked 🫶 love him. also i did end up getting rid of the blue markings on his design so uhhhhh yeah. im still wondering if i should add more robotic bits and implants on him

Y’all- I swear these people have too much time on their hands…

(Thank HaShem for my sister who warned me about this) I was on my way home from Starbucks to drop something off when I started hearing chanting up ahead (and when I mean chanting it was so fucking scary and had neon- nazi vibes). These ass holes were right by my building (and over at the park)- chanting about how queers and trans people are pedos and how we all need to be saved. (I was also told by someone who was walking my way that they’ve been following/harassing people). I had one guy (the one who’s looking up at me) go on about how gays should not be around kids and that we are all pedos- how I need to be saved ( I told him that I was Jewish and did not need to be saved- he then told me well since I was Jewish, I really needed saving or I would burn in hell lol) had this other guy, who was carrying bag pipes go off on how he’s only protecting the kids from the gays and drag queens ( I then told him that the only thing that kids need protection is from him and his cult). So yeah that was a thing…

apollinaire el belrose is such an excellent protagonist to be writing in a relatively high concept sci-fi fantasy story like burn the stars because she truly truly does not care about any of the wild magic and tech based stuff that’s happening even when it is directly related to her. her new scientist friend is like “do you want to know things about your new extremely dangerous superpowers?” and she’s like “no ❤️” and then he’s like “ok can you tell me how you got the superpowers so i can know things about them” and she’s like “the best i can do is lie to you outrageously ❤️”

my brain is mush so i cant write prose but do know that i as usual am thinking about best friend dynamics and caretaking dynamics, and the way they integrate in beau and bobby’s relationship arc, and what it means to not just require increasing levels of daily care but to receive it from the person who’s always been your peer, the same guy you grew up with and experienced teenagehood and adolescence with, and now you need him in a vulnerable way you never expected to need from anyone, and how them being best friends shapes that caretaking dynamic in both positive and negative ways, but ultimately in the end it integrates with that friendship and deepens their bond in a way nobody could understand but just them
