I am now headcanoning that Vortex not only forgot to tell Loona he was poly, but because he'd gotten so used to Bee, who can sense emotions, he kinda forgets sometimes not everyone is that good at reading people. So he didn't realize that Loona didn't pick up on the fact that her feelings for him were very mutual, even after he mentioned having a girlfriend already. And that kinda kicks him in the tail later when he invites Loona to Bee's party (likely on Bee's request, since we know they've talked about Loona) so they could meet in person...and that first meeting doesn't go great.

One detail I really like about ‘Queen Bee’ is how it essentially provides a ‘missing piece’ of Loona’s character development, and in turn makes Seeing Stars an even more impactful episode for her.

Because Queen Bee gives us a first-hand look at Loona’s attempts to make friends, and by extension shows us why that is so hard for her. This episode showed us that Loona’s extreme awkwardness around Vortex back in Spring Broken wasn’t just a case of ‘not knowing how to talk to your crush’ awkwardness but rather how she acts in just about any social situation. As it turns out, Loona is a lot more socially awkward and introverted than a lot of us probably guessed. Which probably shouldn’t be all that surprising in hindsight given what we saw of her background before Blitzo adopted her in Seeing Stars.

With this in mind it’s pretty easy to guess that Loona’s normal response to this social awkwardness is to fall back on her tried and tested psychological defense mechanism of getting sarcastic/abrasive/angry and possibly hitting something or someone in order to get herself to a safe distance. Something we both see inferred with the ‘Lunatic Loona’ comment and see in action with Loona’s response to the poodle who brought it up, and later when Loona gets angry at Bee. In hindsight, Loona acting super shy and awkward in Spring Broken is the result of her for once not being able to fall back on getting angry to avoid an awkward or uncomfortable social situation because she actually wants Vortex to like her.

As an aside, I think this is something many people don’t recognize about Loona. That her general abrasiveness and ‘anger issues’ are almost certainly a defense mechanism that she’s developed over what clearly seems to have been years of trauma and likely abuse before being adopted by Blitzo. It’s a way for Loona to protect herself by keeping anyone who could possibly hurt her at a safe distance. A defense mechanism that’s become so ingrained for her that it’s pretty much reflexive at this point.

For example, this is why I think all the claims that Loona is somehow ‘abusive’ to Blitzo are seriously missing the point: It’s pretty clear that Blitzo has little to no respect for personal boundaries, as we see with both his stalking of the M&Ms and showering Loona with overcompensating affection. So is it really so surprising that Loona would be beating the crap out of him so often when Blitzo is likely constantly triggering Loona’s deeply engrained and reflexive defense mechanism? All while Blitzo himself is entirely oblivious to what he’s doing because as we’ve seen, Blitzo would sooner chew off his own leg and arm before confronting emotional/psychological problems/baggage, ESPECIALLY his own.

Which of course is not to say that I think it’s somehow a good thing or justified when Loona beats the crap out of her father. Rather, that ‘Blitzo constantly invades Loona’s personal space and Loona responds with a brutal ass-kicking’ is a symptom of their respective issues and dysfunctional relationship. Not some banal ‘Blitzo is a poor helpless victim and Loona is a terrible person’ excuse.

Going back to Loona’s development in Queen Bee that leads into Seeing Stars, all this demonstrates to us that Loona doesn’t really have any friends and why that is the case. Like at the start of Queen Bee, we can’t even really call Vortex a friend to Loona, at least from her perspective. For Loona, Vortex isn’t so much a friend as he is a crush. It’s clear that Loona’s initial reasons for coming to the party were mostly just to hang out with this one guy she has a crush on. As evidenced by how Loona immediately wants to ditch the party upon meeting Bee-lezebub, and by extension, realizes that she has absolutely ZERO chance with Vortex.

Now of course, by the end of Queen Bee, we see that Loona seems to have at least started making a few friends among the other hounds at Bee’s party. It’s clear that getting invited back into the party by some friendlier hounds and imps as well as, ironically enough, Blitzo’s presence did help Loona get past some of her social awkwardness. At the same time though, we don’t see enough of them with Loona to really call these much more than ‘good acquaintances’/cool-people-she-met-at-a-party-once.

Which, going into Seeing Stars, is what makes Loona’s scene with Octavia so MASSIVELY important for her.

As I discussed in a previous post, Loona didn’t need to put in effectively ALL of the legwork in finding Octavia. We see that she was at first perfectly content non-verballing telling Blitzo to fuck off and just chilling out around L.A. Instead, it seems that the real reason Loona decided to track down Octavia was because she related to what Octavia was probably going through, which spurred her to go and help her.

Octavia is so much more than just some guy Loona had a crush on or someone Loona had fun with at a party once. This is someone that Loona clearly relates to on a very personal level. Someone that Loona clearly sees a lot of herself in. And because of that, for the first time we see Loona let down all the guards and defenses she normally puts up and really connect with someone else.

A connection which is clearly something special. Loona, who has spent the whole show making it clear she does NOT like people getting in her personal space, and proving she can, will and has beat the utter crap out of anyone who does, offers Octavia to take her hand. And when Octavia goes for a full-blown hug instead, Loona is only briefly surprised and clearly not uncomfortable in the least, even returning and enjoying the hug herself.

I’ve stated in the past that I don’t particularly like how much of the HB fandom has really latched onto treating Loona and Octavia as sisters. And one of the big reasons is that I feel like it rather cheapens the bond and connection these two are actually forming. It paints these two more as kids whose relationship is simply an extension of their fathers’ relationship, brought together simply because those fathers became are a couple.

When what we’re actually seeing is Loona’s and Octavia’s friendship developing largely independent of whatever Blitzo and Stolas have going on. I mean let’s not forget that Stolitz as a relationship is nowhere close to even dating, let alone marriage. Blitzo and Stolas never encourage their daughters to spend time together either, the closest thing to that we see is Blitzo telling Loona to go find Octavia while everyone else is getting sidetracked by shenanigans, which Loona initially blows off completely. Instead, Loona and Octavia clearly seem to be becoming friends due to shared interests, likes and a deep understanding and empathy to the problems the other is facing. And is really in no way dependent on Blitzo and Stolas being a thing, again considering the fact that Stolitz could at this point be charitably be described as a ‘vaguely-defined and very shaky fling’.

Moreso than Vortex, Bee or any of the hounds Loona met in Queen Bee, Loona’s friendship with Octavia feels like something very significant and special for both of them.

Helluva Rewrite (s1e8)

Okay, so I'm insane and got this sudden urge to rewrite Helluva Boss and redesign the cast. I ended up with a full rewrite of episode eight and the design of a brand new character and thought I might as well post it rather than leave it to rot on a word doc lol. Okay, context before hand. Beelzebub is no longer a hellhound fox sparkledog thing. I’ve split the character into Beelzebub, the ruler of Gluttony, and Cerberus who takes the role as Vortex’s gf without fucking over the worldbuilding. Loona is now an actual teenager, only 17 and was adopted by Blitzo very recently in this retelling so she’s still wary of him a bit. I think that’s it, so here is my reworking! 

Loona is terrified. She shows up to the party and is visibly shaken, but immediately brightens up when Vortex calls out to her. 

When Vortex introduces Loona, he notices she’s uncomfortable from the attention and apologizes, then offers to get her a drink to help her relax. 

The second Loona is alone, she has the confrontation with that poodle bitch. Changes in order: 

The Poodle approaches Loona rather than Loona butting into a conversation. She goes “O-M-G. Loona?” and when Loona turns around, she starts getting really mean. 

The Poodle and Loona grew up in the same pound but the poodle left first (incorporate somehow into the conversation) 

Okay, the Poodle is like “Wow, you must’ve finally gotten too old to stay in the pound, you know, since you were such a lunatic nobody wanted you! Can’t relate lol.” 

Loona gets aggro at the lunatic comment, and the Poodle whips out her phone like “woah, careful you’re looking like Lunatic Loona again!” 

‘Lunatic Loona’ comes from Loona getting aggressive at an adoption fair and biting people. She was branded as aggressive and hard to work with and it followed her. The Poodle has a picture of Loona looking rabid. 

Loona is visibly upset then masks it with anger. (Lots of hounds are gathering to watch b/c they are getting loud) she makes a rebuttal like “I’m surprised someone wanted you considering you’re such a massive bitch!” *in this rewrite, it is established that bitch is a cruel term used against hellhounds 

Vortex swoops in the second Poodle squares up (bc she squares up in this after being called a bitch) and calms it down. 

Loona is visibly upset and fidgety. She looks in her drink and notices a fly drowning in the liquid. A couple scenes to show hellhounds she tries to interact with are wary of her and are pointing and whispering about her being crazy. 

Now, enter Beelzebub. Note: Beelzebub will be a bee demon and no longer Votex’s gf, rather that will fall onto a new character! Beelzebub does her song with her pet, Cerberus acting as her hypeman! 

Loona is more in awe during the song than anything else, and starts to seem to be enjoying herself. She dances with Vortex and thinks for a moment he’s flirting with her 

When the song ends, Cerberus rushes Vortex, spins him around and squeals about the song and the party. She notices Loona and basically has the same dialogue Bee had in the episode. When Vortex says this is my girlfriend, Loona is visibly stunned. She repeats the word and Cerberus nods and covers Vortex in kisses. *in this rewrite, it wasn’t mentioned during Vortex and Loona’s first meeting that he had a gf. While this takes away from Vortex being a more aware character, this is a change for the sake of better drama imo 

Loona is mortified and feels like a moron for flirting with a guy with a gf, and her night has already been shitty and embarrassing enough. She goes outside and texts/calls Blitzo. 

While waiting on the curb for Blitzo, a hellhound approaches her. He’ll be the stand in for the guy that’s like ‘oh no, the hottie is leaving?’. He comes up and goes “Loona?” and she’s immediately on edge and snaps at him. Then she recognizes that he is another hound she knew from the pound. They talk 

She apologizes for being on edge, she’s just had a shitty night. He knows, he saw, Poodle got adopted by a Greed demon and was spoiled rotten ever since 

He compliments her and says she looks nice. He’s never seen her look anything other than miserable or angry. She says he seems adjusted enough. He says he didn’t get adopted, he aged out, so he kind of had to learn how to adjust or die in the fighting pits *expanded on later*

Another pause. He says he’s sorry for how he treated her back then, he was miserable and angry and he took it out on her. Loona shakes her head and replies that she was hardly better, then softly adds that she still isn’t. He points out that they’ve managed to have a conversation for a minute without someone getting bitten, so that’s got to count as an improvement. 

Blitzo pulls in, making both of them jump. He asks Loona if she’s alright and if she wants to leave now and to hop in. The hellhound she was talking too is sad at that and says that she should stay because the party just started. Loona stands between them for a moment before suggesting to Blitzo that he come into the party with her. Blitzo says no because he’s had a really shit night and can’t do partying right now. Enter the imp from before. Scene is generally the same, except Blitzo recognizes the other imp and calls them by name so they aren’t some unnamed nobody. 

The scene of Blitzo doing a kegstand is the same, but Cerberus and Vortex are watching with Loona as well. Beelzebub (again, a separate character from the dog thing in the show and Cerberus) offers her challenge *Cerberus brings in the booze rather than Tex to indicate servitude 

Beelzebub is now a bit less of a nice girl. She doesn’t stop halfway through the contest and stare at Blitzo all concerned. Once he beats her she gets super pumped and takes him off on her shoulders. The next few scenes are Blitzo doing shit (chugging drinks, breaking the disco ball, busting some of the honey tubes in the background, causing general choas and constantly drinking) all the while being egged on by Beelzebub. 

Loona finds a small group of friends to talk to along with that other hellhound she first talked to. Then Cerberus asks if she can talk to her in private. In this Cerberus says what Bee originally said in the episode, minus seeing auras. She says that Beelzebub can sense when people are wrecked and can’t help herself. She makes people and demons indulge in their misery and sins until they can’t move, and feeds off of their energy. Blizto is basically a buffet. Loona is a little defensive, but doesn’t insult Cerberus or upset her. 

Loona finds Blitzo in the middle of yet another drinking contest, currently chugging before throwing up into his cup and saying he hasn’t lost yet and is about to drink the puke. Loona pulls him away and notes that he’s a fucking mess and that what he’s doing isn’t okay. Beelzebub mentions that she’s being a party pooper, but Loona is too concerned with Blitzo to care 

They leave the party. Loona waves at the hellhound boy she talked to, and is shown pocketing a number written on a napkin. 

I’m keeping the vomit joke and taking out the moments of Loona calling Blitzo dad, as in this she has only been with him for a short while and doesn’t really know him like that. 

Since this episode would be before season two, this is the first indication of Loona’s past, talking about the pound and shit, and also showcases her being more sensitive and capable of having fun and interacting with people other than her dad and her coworkers. I’m no Shakespeare but I tried my best with what Viv and team laid out including the terrible whiplash humor (i'm talking about you dildo scene)

And this is what i came up for Cerberus! I'm struggling with colors, so I might color them and post it later if i feel like it. Cerberus will either be colored like one of Viv's drawings of JayJay or like Queen Bee when she has the superior color pallet with yellows and oranges.

Debating if hellhounds should wear clothes in this rework because i'm doubling down on them being essentially pets and sentient dogs

Ahoy Chai, back at it again with another VA headcanon wish alternate universe thing idk I’m gonna ramble in your ask again sorry

So I think most of us agree at this point that Helluva should’ve stayed a comedy driven/focused show, and if it were, I feel like Blitzø would’ve worked excellently if he were written and voiced similar to how The Red Guy was written and voiced in Cow & Chicken. Just this buffoonish weirdo who pops in at random to inconvenience everyone’s lives with a smile on his face. I know Brandon Rogers can deliver lines as both a suave smooth talker and a screeching lunatic, but I feel like the bigger tonal difference Charles Adler gives with The Red Guy helps in not only selling him as a deranged lunatic, but also a deranged lunatic you can’t help but laugh at. I would put in a YouTube link since it’s easier to show than to explain, but idk how to honestly.

Also I just miss the old Hazbin era Blitzo design, with the navy blue, red and white color scheme and the kooky grin and the tiny pupils with a lazy eye, his facial expression alone perfectly sells him as a madman who knows it and revels in his madness. Makes me wonder what could’ve been if medrano hadn’t made a spin off and kept Blitzo & Moxxie (pretty sure Millie and Loona were made for Helluva) in Hazbin as goofy assassins, maybe they could’ve been antagonists who seem like idiots but actually start causing some trouble for Charlie and the gang, and maybe they could’ve been used as an arc for Charlie to show her that yes, some people do indeed deserve to be in Hell because they enjoy the suffering they cause. I mean Valentino and other characters can and prolly will fill that role once the show drops but I think Blitzo, Moxxie and Millie could’ve been fun recurring antagonists in Hazbin if nothing else, like Team Rocket except not as wholesome and a whole lot more threatening

It's funny that you say that, because that's exactly the role I think Stolas would have worked best in -- closer to the pilot than Murder Family, just this smiling, foppish weirdo who pops in to make Blitz's life harder and we're never quite sure how afraid of him we should be.

Fan theory that’s unlikely to be true #1, Loona and Octavia from Helluva Boss are multiversal variants of Eleanor Lamb and Elizabeth DeWitt/Comstock from Bioshock and that the two franchises share a multiverse. Think about, one is a 17-year-old girl whose rich and has a British accent (despite never having been to the UK) whose parents solely got together so that one of them could have a child and has a healthy relationship with her father but an unhealthy relationship with her mother. The other one is a young adult female with an American accent (whose barely ever been to America) that was given up by her biological parents, was adopted by a crazed lunatic who wants to use her for his own nefarious purposes, has (seemingly) never met her birth father and has a LOT of people who unhealthy simp for her. These similarities seem too strong to ignore please take this into consideration, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss were made with the intent of being a spiritual successor to the webcomic series Zoophobia, while Bioshock is meant to be a spiritual successor to the video game series System Shock. But it’s like they always say, there’s always a Lighthouse (Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite lighthouses and the Happy/Hazbin Hotel), there’s always a man (Booker, Delta, and Jack as well as Stolas, Blitzø, and Moxxie), there’s always a city (Rapture and Columbia as well as Imp City and Pentagram City/Pandemonium), constants and variables…

Moments of Stupidity 8

Now that I did this post, I wanna put here that I don't think I have a lot of stupid things of this episode because a good chunk of what I thought was dumb was the writers' doing than the characters' doing. What I mean by that is, for example, I find it dumb that Vortex and Bee get to be openly dating when the episode right before it - not in uploading order or whatever - has it be a bad thing for Stolas and Blitzo to do it so openly. Yet that stupidity is more on the writing than anything, it feels like, and I'm just here to call out the characters for doing stupid things that directly affect the plot or at least would have some bearing on it. And of course, Bee and Vortex not even trying to hide the fact that they're a couple doesn't matter in both the episode that revealed it but also the overall show by far. If it ever does matter, then I'll be sure to include it in a post that's about an episode where it actually matters

(And sorry if I offended anyone by saying that anything dumb was of the writers' doing. I just can't agree with the writing or think of it as clever, especially if you were to look at Helluva Boss's overall narrative)

(Oh, and another thing about the writing that doesn't make sense to me, since I'm on this, is that the sin of Gluttony wants Blitzo to be reigned in because he's overdoing shit. TVtropes may have said that Blitzo was more indulging in pride to forget than gluttony but it's probably ridiculous if I really have to go to TVtropes to make more sense of things. Plus, TVtropes probably still doesn't make sense, on what it said about Blitzo indulging in pride. If anything wants to tell me more on that or talk to me about it, then please do)

Queen Bee -

We start off with Loona trying to make small talk with one of the girls there being someone she should recognize is a metaphorical bitch. The other two girls didn't talk so there's no telling with them but at least the poodle is definitely someone who has had encounters with Loona before. Seriously, the 'lunatic Loona' nickname and the picture of Loona puking in her phone? And if I remember right, Loona even asks why she still has that, meaning that Loona is aware that the poodle took that picture before. So why couldn't have Loona tried making small talk with literally anyone else?

Next is Loona again, when she decides to start shit with a fucking sin and doesn't back down. Fuck seriously, she's supposed to be in her early twenties yet she's acting like a reckless teen. Actually, I'd like to think that, even if Loona was an actual teenager, she would still be smart enough to be aware that she's got no chance against a powerful figure like an embodiment of sin and so she shouldn't be treating someone like that like she does with anyone else. And regardless of her actual age, Loona grew up in the fucking pound in Hell where people would do shit to her and she should have always been in a position where she had to survive however she can, at least throughout her childhood. Doesn't that kind of survival situation lasting for as long as it did supposed to teach you to pick your goddamn battles? Unless there's something to that lifestyle that I don't know about, I just don't get why Loona would act like this. To think, Loona only backs down because it made Vortex upset, too

I’m curious on how you feel about Millie and Moxxie. I haven’t seen much Helluva Boss posts from you, so I’m wondering;do you think Millie isn’t loyal to Moxxie BECAUSE she NEVER stands up for him when Blitzo is insulting him, and ONLY does so when Loona/Striker show any sort of insulting. Or do you think MOXXIE is the wrong one? I’m genuinely curious on to how you feel over their dynamic, given your take on Vaggie and Charlie’s romantic relationship.

Thanks for the ask! So when it comes to Moxxie and Millie, I can’t say Millie ain’t loyal AT ALL. She clearly stands up for him in certain areas, but like you said, the thing that grids my gears is that she doesn’t do shit when Blitz constantly gives her husband shit, or even HER in some cases simply because “he’s their boss”. It’s also even more gear grinding because Blitz and Millie seem to be REALLY close, despite Blitz jumping on her husband EVERY second he can, making it clear he wants to screw both of them, and even referring to Millie as a whore in episode 2. This whole dynamic between Millie and her boss just feels forced so the writers can’t have a conflict between the two, and it’s funny because this season seems to want to call out blitz on his shitty actions badly. But yeah, it just makes Millie look toxic, I mean imagine if your father constantly verbally abusing you every chance he got, but your mother doesn’t do anything and just says “but he’s your father! He loves you!”. :/ Now I will say I can see WHY Millie takes such a liking to Blitz, I mean they’re both crazy batshit lunatics while Moxxie is just the straight guy, but if Viv wants to get across how wholesome and supportive they are to each other, then making Millie not do anything while Blitz is on his BS isn’t a good idea, not to mention how Millie is similar to Charlie, they’re both dumb and blind when it comes to characters walking all over their partners, but you can disagree with me on that.

Oh, I also do have opinions on Moxxie and Millie’s relationship as a whole, and...long story short........they’re boring, I’m...sorry. They’re cute and I’m glad they care about one another, but it was cute like....the FIRST TWO times, and now it’s just boring, and I think it’s time for some conflict. I’m not saying I want them to break up or claw at each-other, but I feel like it would be interesting to see their struggles, how they fight, and how they overcome it as characters and grow. ❤️

Okay, but the fact that Bee's first comment to Loona is to call her a "Sweet pup" and then call her a cutie, and then not long after that, call Loona her "new favorite person" and have no problem mentioning that she'd probably slept with Satan if the offer came up - in front of Tex, who she's also obviously into....If that doesn't scream Bee is all for a poly relationship, I don't know what does.

Well yes! That's also why Lunatic bee works so well, Bee feels like a character who would be poly. Plus, her whole thing is abundance, overindulgence, having multiple partners sounds like something she would love.
