Hello lovelies! Who wants a nice, cozy kitchen scene? I'm not back up to snuff, but as part of my physiotherapy I've been encouraged to draw and write and generally give my arm and hand a good work out with all kinds of horrible contortions and exercises. I'm far from at my previous level, and I can't tolerate the kind of shading I preferred before my injury, so for this piece I experimented with a more cell-shading like style this time. I think it turned out alright! A bit rough, sure, but not bad for a first attempt!

I still can't draw a smooth lines without leaning pretty heavily on stabilizers, but I am improving a little more every day. While I'm not completely happy with parts of the overall piece, I think I managed to more or less hit the target!

So the main idea behind all of this was a series of slice of life snapshots that felt cozy and comfortable, focusing heavily on the interactions between characters over drama and big scenes. I didn't have a particular location in mind with this one, but I have always thought that Dagmar's Andoria apartment would be conspicuously corporate-bland, the way a lot of common spaces are in Star Trek - and probably the most common examples Andorian architects would draw from without knowing any better.

In the background, we have Dagmar's little notes and reminders, as she's always struck me as the sort of person who uses her fridge like a personal calendar and organizer rather than a showcase for sentimental things.

Food in all its varieties has been a big part of Emigre from the very beginning, and I thought in particular that it would be nice to capture a scene with Dagmar and Thelen focused around that point. After all, if Thelen can teach Dagmar the ins and outs of Andorian cooking, why can't Dagmar return the favour?

So, working off of that, I wanted to try for a scene that feels mostly familiar. As much as I wanted to feature familiar objects and tools, owing to Dagmar's past origins and preferences, I also wanted to add little things that are just a tiny bit alien, too. We have the half-drunk drinks of familiar blue ale; the datapad, forgotten, going into screen-saver mode; the cream tarts in unusual shades; and even some odd little fruits that look like cherry tomatoes and come in dull Skittle colours, for example. Then, there's the ulu-style knife just at the edge of the frame. It's an unusual choice over a standard santoku knife or any other perfectly serviceable kitchen knife, but given its resemblance to a ushaan-tor it feels oddly appropriate. Providing my recovery continues to go well, I'm hoping to do a few more cozy scenes, but I can't promise anything just yet!

There’s a note from a turian somewhere on Elaaden written by a turian saying the human he’s with was gonna “butter up” the other human and the turian was just confused by what dairy products had to do with this new girl they were letting in the group and it got me thinking omg we have so many metaphors and phrases and and figures of speech and idioms and slang terms. Lorik Qui’in loved human phrases but we only hear a few from him.

“Hold your horses!” What horses? I don’t have horses? What even is a horse?

“Oh im just a little under the weather today.” We’re on a ship, what are you talking about?

God(s)/spirits/enkindlers help the alien who hears the phrase “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.”

And then whatever new age slang the young humans create that make everyone wonder if their translators are broken

Yes! I especially love the detail in ME1 of turians obsessing over human idoms. In multiple scenes, you talk with a turian who quotes a figure of speech he's been rehearsing for days and waiting for the right opportunity to unleash it.

Even the turian councillor does it! How he looks so proud after telling the idom, following it by "as you humans say"

Pop culture and slang change drastically throughout the years. Sometimes, it only takes a couple months for a new phrase to spread like wildfire. Weirdly, the turians seem to be as equally confused by it as they are intrigued and want to be "in with the joke" and all.

"Cunt" Yeah makes sense for an insult, we prefer quad but uh sure.

"Cunty" What do you mean that's a compliment?? Wasn't it just an insult a second ago, how does making it an adjective change the meaning—

"Break a leg!" No! what no. why would I? It's just a job interview. Hopefully, I won't break any legs, be it mine or others.

"Cool as a cucumber" What the fuck are cucumbers.

"Don't cry over spilt milk" ???okay. I wasn't planning to. that will just get sticky, mop it up.

"Hit two birds with one stone." Why do you want me to go throw rocks at birds exactly?

"Rain cats and dogs." You're just making things up because how is that supposed to translate into bad weather? Why the vivid image?

"That's the last straw." ...okay? Then get more straws. I can run to the store and grab a bunch for you. A whole 50 pack goes for 5 credits these days.

"Butterflies in my stomach." See a doctor immediately, please! This isn't normal. Or never mind, your freaky digestive system could probably handle them.

"Fish out of water." Well, put it back.

"Get something off your chest." I...uh..I'm flattered human, but I'm not stripping my armour off in the middle of the street. We should get to know each other better first.

"Barking up the wrong tree." Humans...bark at trees? That's informative. Is it a bonding activity? Are you inviting me to go bark at trees?

"Not my cup of tea." Well, yeah, I'm not a cup of tea, so about this date you asked me on, do any trees work, or are there specific bark only ones.

"Cold feet." Now that you mention it, I have been eyeing this armour with internal heating for a while.

"Call it a day." Yeah. that's what it's called. That's the word we use for a day. What else would you call it?

"Wrap your head around it." That is physically impossible.

okay i dug through my installed mods and several things make slightly more sense

* the unscanned keepers showing up as plot points on the citadel map: a mod called keepers finders, absolutely brilliant, one of the best quality of life mods ever

* unscanned mineral deposits showing up on uncharted planet maps along with a big WARNING text on thresher maw nests: a mod i have promptly forgotten the name of because it's past midnight, also a strong contender for best quality of life mod ever

* skip all me1 frogger minigames: also a mod, called helpfully "skip all minigames". they're either gone completely (no more decrypting dead salarians for their dog tags) or can be bypassed with 0 omnigel. cannot imagine being willing to play the game without it. absolutely indispensable

* harkin does not sexually harass femshep (just uses the same dialogue as with mshep): i remembered i installed this one because i'm so damn delighted it exists. the modding community has done indescribable amounts of work to make story mods like this able to be created at all for me1 -- due to a loss of irreplaceable original files during the botched pc port, the game didn't used to be moddable at all, beyond getting into the guts of the game in notepad++ and literally editing the code yourself, a terrifying process. legendary edition had an explicit goal of working with the modding community, but even with that assistance, the amount of work it took to build a dlc mod installer that would work on me1 was... really inarticulable

* romance same gender love interest: the voice lines for the gay romances were all recorded and exist in the game files. i used to go in and edit the single bit that would tell the game which gender my shepard was for romance purposes. now i can just install a dlc mod and it happens automatically *and* gets shep's gender consistent throughout.

* i have a mod installed that gave me the morality-linked sidequests as soon as i left the citadel, so as not to have to do the lorik qui'in glitch for them, but i'm not sure i like that. they're extremely lategame quests and they're bugging me.

* i also found the mod that was moving conrad and everyone else around. turns out it moved khalisah to after noveria. it's one of those huge mods that tries to repopulate the world and do everything else at once, and i'm really not sure if i like it. it does too many things i didn't expect and there isn't a reference manual.

* there are plenty of others but i am falling to sleep

How I feel about this character: honestly probably one of my favorite one-off side characters?? he delights me. blue-collar working man with incomprehensible name. we love aliens having Genuinely Alien names i want more aliens to have names humans struggle with. he seems like he'd give good hugs.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: ehhh i don't think i have any direct ships, do think he's gay tho. it's the vibe

My non-romantic OTP for this character: i wanted to say him and lorik qui'in for romantic but i feel like the age difference there is probably more than either is really gonna go for, i do think they could be good friends tho. also i bet he and parasini and matsuo share the HOTTEST gossip after hours. port hanshan gossip club qui'in + parasini + matsuo + lilihierax

My unpopular opinion about this character: don't really want shep to fuck him i suppose. also frankly i dont think his name looks that hard to say assuming it's phonetic like most turian names i think he's just exclusively encountered White™️ english-first-language-and-no-others humans

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: hear me out here. recruitable npcs. add them to the normandy's additional crew and gain bonuses. all species possible make the special tactics ship working for the council Actually feel like it's serving the galaxy at large. li could add bonuses to the mako and allow you to upgrade it and also bully you about your driving and how missions went, while also adding worldbuilding notes from his prior experiences, it would be great

BET GIMME YOUR OPINIONS ON LORIK QUI'IN AND URDNOT WREX

Lorik Qui'in:

How I feel about this character: I think he's a well of potential. I like that he uses human idioms, I like his voice. He's the one business executive that I'm actually kind of routing for.

On the TILF list.

Romantic ships: I think it would be fun for him to have fling with Shepard, but other than that I haven't put much consideration into whom would be a good romantic match with a guy you talk to a small number of times about corporate espionage and administrative intimidation.

Non-romantic OTP: I'm with @sparatus that he and Gianna Parasini should have a side plot/short story where they solve more corporate espionage/regulations violations together and they should be drinking buddies.

Unpopular opinion: Frankly, I don't think I have one? I think I like the mechanic, Lilihierax better. How about that? But I still like Lorik a lot.

What I want for this character in canon: We should have gotten to hear from him again, like an email or run into him on Illium or something really briefly. Just for funsies.

Urdnot Wrex:

How I feel about this character: Anyone who knows me knows that I am in love with Urdnot Wrex. Character of all time. Goes from wanting to give up on his people to leading his clan trying to do what's best for them to seizing the chance he's got to make things better for the krogan as a whole. He's funny. He's big. He's red. I love all of these things.

Romantic ship: LET SHEPARD ROMANCE THE FUCKING KROGAN YOU COWARDS!

Non-romantic OTP: I think Wrex and Tali should be best friends forever and ever. Wrex and Garrus as the kind of friends who insult each other all the time has legs. A Wrex, Zaeed and Garrus friendship would have catastrophic consequences for the galaxy as a whole but would be really fun.

Unpopular opinion: OK so since I actually engage very little in wider fandom as a whole I don't actually know if any of my opinions about Wrex are unpopular? I think my opinion about Wrex that might be is actually about Bakara and not at all about Wrex. And it's just that I feel like she was introduced too late in the game. But that's also mostly because the devs were like "Oh yeah I guess women of alien species other than asari should exist." Which isn't about Wrex at all.

What should have happened in canon?: Let me have Wrex back for a game please I missed him. And again, LET SHEPARD ROMANCE WREX YOU COWARDS.

I dont think I dislike any. I know some people dont like Sparatus, but I think he is…sexy in an annoying way? And he has nihlus` voice, I CAN`T RESIST!!

My favorite side character Turian? This is a tough one, but I have to say Lorik Qui'in, I almost drooled first meeting him, he is just so different and almost seductive with his words.

She might hate the heels but Parasini does make ‘em look good. Aedan flicks her fingers at the bartender and, after a quick order, turns back to the woman joining her.

“Ms. Parasini.”

“Commander.”

“How goes the paperwork?”

“All my t’s crossed and i’s dotted.” She crosses long legs with solid calves and lifts an eyebrow when she catches Aedan looking. Aedan gives her the scamp’s smile that’s served her well over the years and is rewarded with a snort and a nod when the bartender serves her the drink Aedan’s buying her. “To a good hunt. for the both of us.” Aedan clinks amicably.

She sips and a fascinating grin crosses her face. “Champagne?”

“And gin. Seems like your thing.” Ferrars’ favorite and since the streak of no nonsense matched, she’d taken a chance.

“Bubbles and a little smack across the face.” She takes another sip. “Can’t say you’re wrong.” Another sip under Aedan’s frank gaze and she added, “I figured you’d be winging your way across the galaxy by now, hot pursuit and all that.”

Shrugging, she agreed, “Probably should be, but we’ve been running hard for the last while. There’s some diversions around here for a quick liberty. Figured we’d take advantage, I can’t guarantee they’ll get another.”

“I did always mean to take a weekend in the spa, do some skiing. Never did get around to it and I’ve got a shuttle to Ilium in a few hours. Parasini tilted her head and amber eyes sparkled with her not a question. “You don’t ski.”

She pretends affront, for the hell of it. “Hey.” and gets rewarded with the *best* Bitch, please look. Chuckling, she concedes, “Only with a rifle and they frown on that here.”

“Are you always all business?” Aedan appreciates the once over she’s getting, makes the effort to switch to civs worth it, for those warm eyes. There’s a neat little lift to the edge of Parasini’s lips, too. And a button on that blouse that’s begging to be popped open.  

Aedan tips her almost empty drink and the ice tinks against the thin wall of glass. “Does this look business like?”

“No. But I like to know my parameters.”

She swallows the last of it down and lets her voice purr a little with it. “Commander gets liberty, too. Learned to take it when I can. Good chase builds up a little charge, y’know?” She flicks her eyes up and Parasini almost invisibly sucks in a breath when she locks on target. Almost. gotcha.

There’s half a pause, then a stroke of a sharp pointed toe on her ankle. And another clink of a glass before Parasini finishes her drink in a swallow, color high on her cheeks. “To liberty and the chase, then.”

Her hand was so small against his. Her history with turians included lots of things - first aid, hand to hand combat, tactical maneuvers - hell, she'd even had some turian professors on Arcturus. But none of them had ever held her hand, fingers running over her knuckles and nails like they were a thing to wonder over. She said nothing as he turned her hand and traced the lines in her palm, a blunted talon following the pad of his fingertip.  "Your bones are much smaller than I'd imagined. Your skin is rough in some places and yet smooth in others.” He cocked his head, considering his words. “Are they injured often?" "You mean have I broken fingers before?"

I like him because he's a businessman rather than a solider, so I can make things new for him. I dunno what it is about older turian guys that just fucking does it for me sjfksdjklflksfl

This piece still floors me every time, Saren being this soft just stops my heart mid beat, honestly it's something I've lately felt more and more need to indulge myself in. It's so slow but hits like a fully loaded train, all the emotion is expertly hidden just under the surface. Probably one of the best pieces of writing I've had the pleasure of reading, period.
