Daily update post:
The attack drone that hit a school in Eilat yesterday has been determined to have been Iranian, it was launched from Syria (on Israel's north eastern border), flew through Jordan (on Israel's eastern border) in order to reach Eilat (the most southern spot in Israel) and attack there undetected.
I'm still waiting for the global outcry over the fact that Iranian and Palestinian rockets and drones are targeting Israeli hospitals (sometimes repeatedly) and schools.
Tumblr media
Word has spread that the Abu Shaker hummus eatery in Haifa, owned by an Israeli Arab family, is being boycotted for having donated to IDF soldiers. Israelis from all over the country have been coming to the eatery, to support the family. A recent poll, conducted after the start of the war, shows 70% of Israeli Arabs identify with the State of Israel, and see its problems as theirs, too.
Tumblr media
Antisemitic attacks continue to take place globally. Yesterday, two Jewish school were shot at in Montreal, Canada. In Los Angeles, anti-Israel protesters have attacked Jews trying to reach the Museum of Tolerance for a screening organized by Gal Gadot of some of the footage evidence of Hamas' massacre.
instagram
Twenty four members of the US congress sent a letter to the president of UPenn to denounce the university's refusal to denounce the Hamas massacre. More and more Jewish students have been speaking up about how unsafe they feel on north American college campuses, including at Ivy League universities. Here's anti-Israel protesters referring to Concordia University in Canada, proudly cheering to the statement, "We terrified them!"
In Germany, 85 years after Kristallnacht, they projected the words "Never again is now!" in the colors of the Israeli flag. Jewish people will remember the silence of those who condoned the massacre of our people, but we will also remember those who stood by us.
Tumblr media
Yesterday, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) published a vid of two hostages, an elderly woman and a kid, 12 years old Yagel Yaacov. Once again, their texts are dictated by terrorists, so the media here is refusing to play along with this psychological warfare, and has not shown the vid. But a screenshot has been shared, showing the difference in Yagel state by comparing a pic of his from before Oct 7 (on the left) and in the vid published (on the right):
Tumblr media
This is also a reminder that not all of the hostages were kidnapped by Hamas. While Hamas orchestrated the breach into Israel, the massacre and most of the kidnappings, other Palestinians, both terrorists and civilians, are known to have used the opportunity to infiltrate Israel, too. The PIJ terrorists are estimated to be holding at least 30 of the hostages. This makes reaching a deal that includes the release of all hostages that much harder. It's not known, but is possible, that there are others, aside from Hamas and PIJ, who are holding Israeli hostages as well.
Regarding even civilian Gazans having infiltrated Israel, as one example there's CCTV footage recovered from the entrance to kibbutz Be'eri at 12:16 on Oct 7, almost 6 hours after Hamas first tore down Israel's border fence, where you can see regular people from Gaza coming in, including even an old man with crutches:
Tumblr media
I read an account in Hebrew by an Israeli mother of a guy who was there, during the massacre. She asked for her identity to remain anonymous. She wrote: "He's screaming every night, he calls for his friends to return, he screams that he's sorry, he stares at the sky for hours on end, he waits for them to return, my son survived, but he is not with us." Her son was one of the soldiers who fought off the terrorists on Oct 7. There are at least hundreds of Israeli soldiers currently being treating at mental health institutes after what they had witnessed during the massacre. Israel's social security estimates that there are altogether 13,000 Israelis who are being treated for mental health issues following the massacre. And that's just for the first day of the war.

Lovestruck in-game vs real life -- Los Angeles (Gangster's in Love, My Siren Crush backgrounds, but also used in other series), all photos taken by me w/ my phone
Los Angeles skyline (night) -- Photo taken from Griffith observatory. The observatory closes at 10PM, your car will be locked-in/cited if you park at the top and don't leave by 10PM. Suggestion is to park at Greek Theater and walk up to the observatory, it's a 15-20min walk. 2800 E Observatory Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90027 Griffith observatory (night) -- While the observatory is closed on Mondays, this is the best time to visit with less people there. You can still walk around the grounds and take photos. The parks, grounds close at 10PM. 2800 E Observatory Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90027 Rodeo Dr -- In Beverley Hills there's a street with all high end shopping and eateries. Worth a walk through even if you don't buy anything. 9480 Dayton Way, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 Santa Monica Pier -- During weekdays you can drive up to the boardwalk and park there. During weekends it gets pretty crowded and you'd have to park at the public garages nearby in downtown. The Ferris wheel is worth a ride during the day to get a high view of the entire beach. Surfing classes, rentals are available. 200 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA 90401 Santa Monica beaches -- I went on a weekday and there were still a lot of people, but the beaches are nice especially at sunset. I didn't get a chance this time, but I heard beaches at Malibu are also very nice. Los Angeles skyline (day) -- There's free parking about 1 mile down from the observatory and a dirt hiking trail (it's kinda steep) that leads up to the observatory. The short hiking trail is a good spot to get a view of the skyline in the daytime. 2800 E Observatory Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90027

1ST  - 7TH JULY 2024.
THE HEADLINES
A MICHELIN STAR(FISH) EXPERIENCE
Rumors of a brand new seafood restaurant have been milling about town for months, but it seems like there’s truth to this particular piece of gossip! Oyster & Pearl has recently taken up a vacant unit in Laurel Village, overlooking the harbor, the slot using the panoramic views to their advantage with outdoor seating. Though not much is known by the minds behind the eatery, it is reported that the owner has run a Michelin star restaurant back in Los Angeles. It is reported to open Tuesday 2nd July, and is accepting seat bookings now — just in time to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July!
FACTORY RESET!
It has been reported that IntegraTech Civil Solutions, a large engineering firm responsible for multiple skyscrapers, malls and resort builds across the world, has recently attained an abandoned warehouse in Weaver Ridge. Previously a factory that specialized in paper and wood manufacturing, the site lay dormant for over forty years. Though IntegraTech haven’t revealed the exact nature of what will be on the former site, they do promise it’ll “change the landscape of Blue Harbor as the people know it”.

PageSix/Backgrid exclusive -
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were all smiles as they stepped out for their first night out since the release of “Spare.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were spotted arriving at Hollywood hotspot San Vicente Bungalows, the top eatery for industry power players, in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. In exclusive photos obtained by Page Six, the former actress, 41, looked elegant in black leather pants, black heels and a beige cardigan. She complimented the look with a black clutch. Harry, 38, on the other hand, wore a gray cardigan paired with a blue T-shirt, jeans and blue shoes. The memoir author was the first one to step out of the car while Markle came out after, hiding from the Los Angeles rain as a bodyguard held an umbrella open for her. The members-only club — owned by Jeff Klein, who also runs the famed Sunset Tower hotel — bans cell phones and photos, so the privacy-keen couple ensured their meal was a peaceful one. Harry was friendly towards those around them. This is the first time the couple has been seen in public since the release of Harry’s blockbuster memoir, “Spare,” in which he spared no truths about his family. From talking about his infamous frostbitten penis to accusing Prince William of physically attacking him and alleging that his father called him a “spare” when he was born, “Spare” became the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. And despite the bitter taste the book has left in his family’s mouth, an insider told Page Six that the former royal has no regrets. “Harry said he was really happy about the success of the book and the reaction to it,” the insider told us. “He said he had no regrets about any of the revelations, and he’s relieved to have got his story out into the world. There’s been an amazing reaction to it, he said.” The source added that Harry and Markle “seemed to be in extremely good spirits.” It’s unclear whether the couple will be invited to King Charles’ coronation. In fact, he’s so proud of his work that another insider told us the dad of two could be adding an extra chapter to the paperback version of his memoir. “Prince Harry is already planning to add at least one new chapter … to the paperback version … out later this year or early next, when the hardcover sales have ended,” the source told us. However, only time will tell if the explosive memoir will cost the ousted couple their invitation to King Charles’ coronation on May 6. The couple has also been kicked out of their Frogmore home in the UK. Their night out also comes after news that Charles is kicking Harry and Markle from their Frogmore Cottage home and offering it to disgraced Prince Andrew. An insider told Page Six that the monarch began the eviction process in January — the day after “Spare” came out. A source originally told The Sun, who first reported the news, that “this eviction surely spells the end of Harry and Meghan’s time in the UK.” As they’ve made California their home, the former royals don’t have an alternative home in the family’s estate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am still old enough to remember when Harry said that the lights of all the camera flashes triggers him, he said that's what makes being a royal unbearable. I guess those magic mushroom really did wonders for his trauma.

Caesar salad isn’t named after Julius Caesar.
It would be easy to assume that the Caesar salad got its moniker from the famous Roman statesman of the same name, but the classic appetizer actually has no connection to Julius Caesar. Instead, it was named after an Italian American restaurateur and chef named Caesar Cardini. Cardini opened his first restaurant in California in 1919, one year before the onset of Prohibition. In the 1920s, he expanded across the border so that he could legally serve alcohol, opening a new eatery called Caesar’s in Tijuana, Mexico. It was at this restaurant that the recipe for Caesar salad was invented, and while the exact origin of the dish is debated, what’s certain is that Cardini claimed responsibility and marketed the salad under his name.
According to Cardini’s daughter, Rosa, the original Caesar salad was improvised on a busy Fourth of July weekend in 1924. After running out of other ingredients, the story goes, Cardini gathered anything available — romaine lettuce, olive oil, egg, croutons, Worcestershire sauce, and Parmesan — and instructed his chefs to mix it together tableside for added showmanship. Others say the salad was created by Cardini’s brother, Alessandro, in an effort to impress a group of airmen dining at Caesar’s. And some argue that it was actually a restaurant employee named Livio Santini who came up with the salad, basing it on his mother’s recipe. Whatever the truth may be, Cardini moved back to Los Angeles and opened a shop in 1938 to sell bottles of his popular namesake salad dressing.

it was the summer social climbing went on strike. for months, no one could ask you what you were working on and try to discern your value through your career because no one was working. everyone was equal and it drove certain people crazy. they needed to feel big and that required you feeling small.
"feed me!" screamed egos all across los angeles. people showed up to the opening of a togo's eatery in westlake village just to feel something.
i loved seeing people try to carve out an identity beyond their work. Having to be a person is hard. It's much easier to be someone who does things.

Hi Skippy & Friends-Pilgrim’s art class was about truth in advertising.  Plus this mention…
Reported in the Montecito Journal for this week, in the section Montecito Miscellany…“Come See the Stars by Richard Mineards: Horrifying news! A celebrity sightseeing jaunt which promises to take royal fans close to the Riven rock estate of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is in the works. The new guided tour, which will set visitors back $1,400 for a group of six, will take in many of the tony twosome’s hangouts in our rarefied enclave, according to the U.K. Mirror newspaper. The sightseeing extravaganza is being advertised online as the royal Celebrity tour of Los Angeles and Montecito, which just happens to the run by a friend of Meghan’s estranged father Thomas Markle. Photographer Karl Larsen, 54, claims Thomas approves of the new venture, which will take in a road close to the royal duo’s $15 million estate, as well as Meghan’s favorite stores and eateries. Natascha Wittmann, L.A. correspondent for the top German magazine BILD, called for my thoughts on the idea. I described it as "quite horrendous.” What next, maps to celebrity homes being hawked on Coast Village Road?“Well, this will be a bust. Over and out from a perfect day on the Cape.
Great artwork!  They don’t even live there…such insanity!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Schwab’s closed its doors in October 1983 and five years later was demolished. Schwab’s was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Wants to Get Into Pictures” (1955).

He is performing at the Hotel Showroom where he later orders a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of milk, even though the chef reccommends the escargot (snails). Lucy is dating a handsome man (Ricardo Montalban) who turns out to be royalty. When Harry finds out that the Prince is in love with Lucy, he'll stop at nothing to get the two married - including masquerading as a fortune teller during their date at a Persian-themed restaurant.
Tumblr media
Villa Roma  ~ “Lucy’s Last Blind Date” (1973)
When Harry finds out his cousin Ben (Don Knotts) is rich and single, he wants Lucy to go on a blind date with him.
BEN (to Lucy, about the menu): “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this is all in a foreign language.”  LUCY: “It’s Italian. You kinda have to expect that in a restaurant called the Villa Roma.”
Much of the episode also takes place at the Bradshawe Building Coffee Shop (see the first entry above).

You never forget your first chicken-cilantro dog garnished with Caesar salad. The first time I ordered one was in autumn 2003, at Jeff’s Gourmet Sausage Factory, a small, glass-front eatery on a stretch of West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles known for its yeshivas (Jewish schools focussed on Talmud study) , mezuzah shops and plethora of kosher markets and bakeries. Opened by owner Jeff Rohatiner in 1999, Jeff’s (referred to colloquially as such) is something of a legend in L.A. On any given weekday you can find an eclectic mix of customers — students from the Chabad school a few blocks down, stroller-pushing moms in long skirts and sheitels (wigs), teenagers in sports jerseys and shorts — sitting at a sidewalk table outside of Jeff’s feasting on one of its popular fleishig menu items, from the classic Western burger to the spicy beef and lamb merguez.
In 2003, I was not yet married (or divorced; that would come more than a decade later), living in Santa Monica in a one-bedroom apartment within walking distance of the beach and a row of coffee joints and fruit smoothie stands. But there were no kosher restaurants within a solid 7-mile radius.
Thanks to a boyfriend whom I met at a friend’s Rosh Hashanah dinner and was the son of an East Coast rabbi, I discovered Jeff’s one balmy October afternoon. Said boyfriend suggested the chicken-cilantro dog — I mean, what a genius concept, a chicken hot dog laced with cilantro and topped with salad. It was love at first bite.
The boyfriend didn’t last — he went on to marry a girl far more adept at the culinary arts than I would ever be; and I went on to marry (and divorce) a culinary wizard with whom I now co-parent two teenage children. But it was on that fateful autumn day in 2003, in that liminal space between Yom Kippur and Sukkot, that my obsession with Jeff’s kosher chicken-cilantro hot dog took eternal root.
For years, it was my go-to lunch whenever I found myself in the Pico-Robertson section of town. I’d pick up to-go orders on my way home from meetings with Hollywood executives and editors at various publications. Later, after moving to L.A.’s eastside, an hour’s drive at the height of traffic, I’d take my kids to Jeff’s for dinner. My friend Ale and I would head to Jeff’s on Sundays where, over frothy, ice-cold Cokes — another amazing thing about Jeff’s: it carried the soda fountain crushed ice — we’d unpack topics ranging from parenthood to episodes of “Shtisel.” I’d buy the frozen packs for later use in pastas, sliced up and grilled and twirled around a fork with fettuccine. It was the ultimate comfort food, the pinnacle of hot dog glory. There were nights on which I craved that chicken-cilantro dog with a desperate, fiery ache.
Then the pandemic struck. And like restaurants globalwide, Jeff’s was forced to pare back its menu. My beloved chicken-cilantro hot dog, topped with fresh Caesar salad and served in a toasted French roll, was yet another casualty of COVID-19.
I mourned its loss like one would a photo scrapbook destroyed in a house fire, like a silly schoolgirl would an unrequited crush. It was absurdist the extent to which I navigated this heartbreak. For months — years — I could not, would not, accept that it was gone. I wanted to continue to support Jeff’s, and I did. I’d turn up and stand in line, perusing the available items printed on menus taped to the folding table functioning as a makeshift outdoor ordering counter and cashier. And when I approached the front of the line, even though the chicken-cilantro dog was nowhere to be found, I would ask for it regardless, knowing full well the dreaded answer to come: “We no longer serve that here.”
I was steeped in unmitigable denial over that chicken dog. It was unfathomable to me that it had vanquished like a blast of air. “I’m sorry,” the man at the counter would say, remnants of flour and hamburger bun clinging to his yellow Jeff’s Gourmet Sausage Factory T-shirt. “It just wasn’t one of our more popular items.”
I sampled everything else there was to order — hamburger, hot dogs, the award-winning pastrami sandwich. They were fine. One could say they were even good. Excellent, in fact. But they weren’t my chicken-cilantro dog. Perhaps it was because so many other things had been snatched away — my marriage, my family life, the promise of domestic stability. Millions of people died during the pandemic, people lost their livelihoods, their homes. The loss of that chicken-cilantro hot dog represented more than just a menu item. It triggered that collective loss that stung so many of us on a global scale.
Then one day, I decided that enough was enough. I needed to fling myself into radical acceptance. So I walked over to Jeff’s. And I scrolled the menu. And some 20 years after that inaugural visit, I ordered something that I never had before: the fried chicken sandwich. Battered and fried, with a dollop of aioli spread across a brioche bun and a pile of kosher pickle chips on the side.
Was it the chicken-cilantro hot dog served with a mountain of Caesar salad? No. But it was also one of the best things that I have ever tasted. Crispy, juicy, fresh. In that moment, I truly understood that the world had changed.  It was time to move on — to embrace new sandwiches.
To paraphrase F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are infinite kinds of love, but never the same love twice. The fried chicken sandwich will never be the chicken-cilantro dog, and to expect it to be is a fool’s errand. But the fried chicken sandwich at Jeff’s Gourmet Sausage Factory is plump, it is spicy — it is delicious. And it is part of a new culinary journey that is only just beginning.
