How I Think Certain DuckTales (2017) Characters Would Wield A Lightsaber

Ok. Here I’ll be going over how I think certain DuckTales (2017) characters would wield a lightsaber in a fight if they were lightsaber duelists. This post was partly inspired by @writebackatya’s If You Could Give Any DuckTales (2017) Character A Gun Which One Would You Give It To post and credit also goes to @boingodigitalart since I probably couldn’t have found it if he hadn’t reblogged it. The idea of DuckTales (2017) characters wielding guns got me to think about how they might wield lightsabers. I’ll be determining what types of lightsaber fighting styles from the Star Wars mythos they might prefer based on their personalities and the skills they already have. Also, Spoiler Alert for the DuckTales (2017) TV series and the Star Wars franchise. With all that out of the way, let’s dive right in.

As shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Scrooge seemed to favor both blocking and attacking in a sword fight. So, if Scrooge were to use a lightsaber, he might try out something like Djem So, a lightsaber combat form that’s, as stated in The Jedi Path book, about both blocking and attacking in a lightsaber-to-lightsaber duel. Scrooge might also practice Shien, a lightsaber combat form which, as stated in the Fightsaber Jedi Lightsaber Combat book, is basically about reflecting blaster bolts back at the opponent since, as shown in the episode ‘Moonvasion! Part 1’, Scrooge seems to have some skills reflecting blaster bolts back at an opponent. Also, given that, as shown in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Scrooge uses his cane as a pogo stick, he might use a sabercane in the same way since, as shown in the Star Wars The Clone Wars episode ‘Lightsaber Lost’, a sabercane is basically lightsaber hidden inside a cane.

As shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Goldie seems to favor parrying in a melee fight. So, I think that means that Goldie might also try out Djem So if she were to use a lightsaber. After all, as also stated in The Jedi Path book, ripostes are a part of Djem So. Also, Goldie might try out a lightsaber move like Trakata which, as shown in the Star Wars Visions episode ‘The Elder’, is a lightsaber move that involves getting the opponent focused on attacking their adversary’s lightsaber blade before that adversary turns their lightsaber off and then turns it back on as a way to catch their opponent off-guard. After all, as also shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Goldie is a really skilled thief and con artist who likes to outwit and trick the people around her. Trakata would be pretty risky since turning your lightsaber off mid-combat does run the risk of getting hit by the opponent’s lightsaber as a YouTuber named EckhartsLadder pointed out in their Why didn’t Jedi/Sith TURN OFF THEIR LIGHTSABERS to avoid an opponent’s blade? | Star Wars Lore YouTube video. But, since Goldie is, as I already pointed out, a skilled thief and con artist, and, as shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, seemed to know a thing or 2 about melee combat. I think that she would know just the right time to use Trakata. So, I think that a lightsaber move like Trakata would be fitting for someone like Goldie.

As shown in the episode ‘Daytrip Of Doom!’, Donald fights with a lot of rage that he allows to guide him and focuses mostly on offense by coming at his opponent with a series of wild movements and, as shown in the episode ‘What Ever Happened To Donald Duck?!’, Donald focuses his rage and uses it to protect his family. So, if he were to use a lightsaber, I think that he would try out a combination between Juyo and Vaapad. After all, as shown in The Force Unleashed novelization, Juyo was a form designed for offense and was described as a vicious form of lightsaber combat that is filled with fury and, as shown in the Revenge Of The Sith novelization, Vaapad involved the practitioner using anger as a weapon without letting it control them. Given everything I already said, Donald lets his anger guide him but also focuses and uses it to protect his family. So, I think that a combination between Juyo and Vaapad would be fitting for Donald since he lets his anger guide him like a Sith but also doesn’t let it make him hurt his loved ones like a Jedi.

As shown in the episode ‘Louie’s Eleven!’, Daisy fights pretty ferociously and is able to focus her rage for a specific task just like Donald. So, if Daisy were to use a lightsaber, she might try out a combination of Juyo and Vaapad for the same reasons I said Donald might in my previous point. But, as also shown in the episode ‘Louie’s Eleven!’, Daisy seems to prefer dodging and evading and then delivering a ferocious counterattack while Donald, on the other hand, seems to prefer charging the enemy head-on. So, during a lightsaber duel, Daisy might dodge and evade the opponent’s lightsaber strikes and then counter with ferocious lightsaber strikes with her combination between Juyo and Vaapad as opposed to Donald who would probably just charge the opponent head-on.

As shown in the episode ‘Nothing Can Stop Della Duck!’, Della used acrobatics during her fight against the Gilded Man. So, if Della were to use a lightsaber, she might try out Ataru. After all, shown in The Jedi Path book, Ataru involves acrobatics and it also involves all sorts of energetic movements. And, as shown in the episode ‘What Ever Happened To Della Duck?!’, Della can be quite energetic. Also, using Ataru might allow Della to outmaneuver her opponent with its acrobatics and deliver all kinds of punches and kicks as well as lightsaber strikes. Plus, as also shown in the episode ‘What Ever Happened To Della Duck?!’, Della has a prosthetic leg. So, the kicks Della delivers with her prosthetic would probably do more damage.

As shown in the episode ‘Daytrip Of Doom!’, Webby is quite the combat enthusiast. So, if Webby were to use a lightsaber, she might try out every form of lightsaber combat. After all, given that Webby is a combat enthusiast, she would probably really relish the opportunity to practice as many moves as possible with a weapon she’s never seen before. Webby’s combat enthusiasm probably also means that she would really like to practice lightsaber combat forms with quite a few different types of lightsabers like the regular single-bladed lightsaber, 2 single-bladed lightsabers at the same time, the double-bladed saberstaff, etc. Also, as shown in the episode ‘From The Confidential Casefiles Of Agent 22!’, Webby was trained to fight by her grandma Beakley who was a secret agent. So, I think that means it would be easy for Webby to deduce the strengths and weaknesses of certain lightsaber combat forms. For example, Webby would probably be able to easily deduce that Soresu would only, as Darth Traya described Soresu in the Knights Of The Old Republic 2 video game, delay the inevitable since Soresu, as shown in The Jedi Path book, is a lightsaber combat form that only focuses on defense without any focus on offense thus leaving no room to counterattack.

As shown in the episode ‘The Phantom And The Sorceress!’, Lena has magical powers at her disposal that she can use in combat. So, if Lena were to use a lightsaber, I think that she would try out Niman. As shown in The Jedi Path book, Niman is a form of lightsaber combat that encourages integrating Force abilities into lightsaber combat. Obviously, Lena doesn’t have the Force. But Lena’s magical abilities would make a sufficient substitute. Also, Lena might get some help from Webby to use a lightsaber properly. After all, as shown in the episode ‘The Other Bin Of Scrooge McDuck!’, Lena and Webby have a strong bond and, as I already pointed out in my previous point, Webby was trained to fight by her grandma Beakley who was a secret agent. And I think that Webby would be incredibly thrilled to spar with Lena given their bond and the fact that, as I also already pointed out in my previous point, Webby is a combat enthusiast.

As shown in the episode ‘The Duck Knight Returns!’, Drake Mallard AKA Darkwing Duck is able to take quite a bit of punishment and keep on fighting. So, if Drake were to use a lightsaber, I think that he would try out Djem So. After all, like I pointed out earlier, Djem So is about both blocking and attacking. And, as shown in the episode ‘Moonvasion! Part 1’, Drake takes the enemy’s punishment and counters with his own strikes. the defensive part of Djem So would be perfect when paired with Drake’s resilience and ability to persevere and the offensive part of Djem So would be perfect when paired with Drake’s ability to fight back while persevering through the enemy’s attacks. But I think Drake might also practice Soresu. After all, as also shown in the episode ‘Moonvasion! Part 1’, Drake has a limit to how much punishment he can take before collapsing and is somewhat lacking in terms of fighting skills compared to other characters from the DuckTales (2017) TV series. Plus, Drake might exercise more caution when dealing with an opponent who is wielding a lightsaber since, as shown in the episode ‘Let’s Get Dangerous! Part 2: A Case Of Mistaken Reality!’, Drake as well as Launchpad were able to think up strategies to take down the Fearsome Four by playing off their weaknesses that they read and watched in in-universe Darkwing Duck media. And, as shown in the Star Wars: Darth Bane: Rule Of Two novel, Darth Bane taught Darth Zannah Soresu in order for Darth Zannah to accommodate for her relative lack of physical prowess with Soresu’s dedication to defense and redirection. So, Soresu might also help Drake accommodate for his relative lack of fighting skills. And Drake might also practice a little bit of Ataru. After all, as shown in the episode ‘Let’s Get Dangerous! Part 1: The St. Canardian Guardian!’, Drake sometimes fights with acrobatics and, like I pointed out earlier, Ataru is about acrobatics.

An Alan Wake 2 fic. Spoilers for Alan Wake 2!

Summary: Aleksi Kesä manages to slip out of the spiral and film he was trapped in.

Saga Anderson, caught in the middle of Wake's horror story, finds a man that looks identical to her partner in the middle of the woods. He's lost, confused, and only seems to speak Finnish. Saga has to try and uncover the truth as well as trying to save her family. Where did he come from? How did he get here?

And where's her Casey?

Chapter 2: Faces

Maybe Coffee World wasn’t such a good idea.

Saga had noticed it getting darker when driving but hadn’t considered how difficult it would make her search until she’d reached the park. That, coupled with the loud downpour, is turning out to be a real pain in the ass while she’s trying to investigate.

It’s still raining. It shouldn't come as a shock to her, but it does. 

With only her flashlight to provide a pretty mediocre light for her search, she does her best to find evidence, clues, or really any further indication of the cult in the northern area of the theme park. Apart from the stash she’d already found earlier, she doesn’t find anything incriminating. She does notice the presence of many Cult of the Tree symbols scattered around that she kicks herself for not noticing earlier, but there’s no direct way of tying them to Ilmo without forensic investigation. At the moment it would be circumstantial evidence at best. It could easily be the work of anyone else working at the place with creepy smiling coffee pot mascots (she absolutely despises those things).

She doesn’t come across any more Taken, but that doesn’t mean she lets her guard down. The longer she stays in this place, the more she’s reminded of her fight with Thornton and Mulligan not long ago. That alone is enough to keep her on edge.

She thoroughly searches the outskirts of the park she hadn’t checked before. No luck, no chance. She scans the gift shop again, but there’s nothing of note. Just a waste of time. At some point her brain stops focusing on the surroundings and her thoughts start to wander.

The fucking FBC had showed up and snatched the case from her perfectly capable hands. Even Casey, an experienced, adept FBI agent in his own right, had said this case was better suited to her. Steven the technician had said that the FBC monitoring station was here to look at volcanic activity and air toxicity levels, but Saga had been suspicious of that statement from the moment he’d said it. She doesn’t doesn’t know anything about the Federal Bureau of Control, other than maybe a vague memory of Casey mentioning it once, so she would have asked more questions if she hadn’t been caught up in a conversation with Ilmo.

Ilmo.

He’d been there at the time too, with the guy from the FBC. Does he know about them? What they actually do? More importantly, do they know about him and his apparent membership with the Cult of the Tree? Do they even know what that is? They were quick to arrest him back at the lodge, so they must know something, except Saga has no idea how or why they would even have that information and that frustrates her immensely.

She feels like tearing her hair out, but she takes a deep breath and forces herself to stay calm and collected. She has no hope of getting anywhere if she doesn’t keep it together. Stay focused, stay alert, stay prepared.

Out of nowhere, a sudden booming splash makes her jump.

Her heartbeat quickens. What was that? A Taken? Where did it come from? Even through the rain, it didn’t sound like it came from the Latte Lagoon behind her, but weirdly from the path leading to more attractions up ahead. It had lasted a good few seconds, sounding almost like the emptying of a giant bucket of water, audible against the rainfall.

Eyes trained at the path ahead, Saga checks that her gun is loaded (it is) before staying completely still and listening out intently. If it’s a Taken, it would soon make itself known to her.

It doesn’t. Instead, she hears more splashes, followed by a cry of pain and the sound of retching.

Holding her breath, she concentrates on her hearing even harder to make sure that she hadn’t made it up. Apparently she didn’t because the retching continues, quickly followed by more soft splashes, then violent coughing.

Her instinct is to call out ‘Hello?’ but she catches herself before it leaves her mouth. Just because it doesn’t sound like a Taken doesn’t mean it isn’t one, or that it isn’t dangerous. She can gain the upper hand if she finds it before it finds her.

Gun and flashlight primed, she slowly advances toward the source of the noise, stopping as soon as she sees movement about ten feet in front of her.

The first thing she notices is that the Huotari Well is overflowing. Water gently and steadily pours from its broken sides onto the ground below. It strikes Saga as odd, it hasn’t rained that much has it?, but it’s the least of her worries when something else catches her eye.

On the ground just a couple of feet next to the well, there’s a figure that looks like a man. He’s on his hands and knees, turned away from her, spitting and sputtering into the puddle underneath. The person is utterly soaked to the bone and a dirtied, unbuttoned white shirt clings to their lean form, revealing pasty skin underneath. He doesn't seem to notice her.

Cautiously, Saga moves her light toward him and makes her presence known.

“Hey, are you okay?”

Her voice makes the figure jump, causing him to lose grip on the slippery ground, resulting in him crashing onto his side. He flips himself over and hurries to prop himself up with his arms, finally facing her, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. Or, in this case, the beam of her flashlight.

Saga gasps as she immediately recognizes the face behind the curtain of flattened, dirty blond hair.

“Casey?!”

The gun is put away in an instant and she rushes forward with an outstretched hand. “What happened?! How did-”

She stops. As she was moving forward, he was frantically scrambling backward to get away from her.

She looks on in confusion. “What..?”

He’s stopped as well, but his gaze is locked onto her. His eyes are impossibly wide and she can hear him panting shakily.

“Mitä helvettiä?”

So many questions and observations start to race through her mind. He’s wearing different clothes. He shouldn’t have been able to get here. He’s never looked this scared before.

She’s so wrapped up in her thoughts that she misses what he says when he suddenly speaks up.

“What?” She asks, guilty that she didn’t hear him the first time.

“Missä helvetissä minä olen?”

He repeats himself again between shaky breaths, louder though still raspy, and it dawns on Saga that it isn’t that she didn’t hear him, but that she doesn’t understand him.

While she’s wrapped in bewilderment, he says the same thing again and adds to it.

"Missä minä olen? Ja kuka helvetti sinä olet?"

A spike of fear stabs into Saga’s heart. Everything about this feels wrong. She remembers hearing about instances where people start speaking in another accent after a brain injury. Had Casey suffered one? Could that extend to speaking a whole new language? 

Tears prick at her eyes as she tries to study him in more detail. Even after all the cases they’d worked on together, she’s never seen her partner look as distraught as this. While clearly guarded, his posture and expression exude a vulnerability and desperation that strongly reminds her of a prey animal. Like a deer. Or a lamb.

“Voi saatana”, Casey spits out, clearly cursing. He runs a hand through his damp hair. “Voi perkele.”

Is this all part of Wake’s story? She hadn’t found any manuscript pages about anything like this, but she just knows he’s to blame, playing with her partner’s life and warping his mind like he’s nothing but the character in his books. She can’t think of a single other explanation.

It’s stopped raining, she realizes, and the well’s stopped overflowing. She and Casey are at a standstill. They stay face to face, neither daring to move, both trying to gauge the other’s reaction.

Opting for a new approach, Saga wedges her flashlight under her arm and raises her hands slowly before carefully taking another step forward. Casey’s eyes follow her, wary, though he doesn’t shuffle away.

“Casey…” she says softly. “It’s me, Saga.”

There is an unimaginable ache in her heart when he shows no indication of recognizing her or her words.

He blinks up at her. "Puhut kai englantia... oletko amerikkalainen?"

Maybe it’s because they’re so close to Watery, or maybe Saga subconsciously recognizes it, but the lilt of his speech leads her to believe that he’s talking in Finnish. Which would make sense, given Watery’s history, but would also make no sense, because this is the very American Casey.

“Alex?” She tries, practically pleading, unable to keep her voice from wavering.

That seems to trigger a response, because he sits up suddenly. He then uses a hand to indicate to himself. 

“Aleksi.”

She still doesn’t know what he’s saying, so she tries repeating herself. “Alex.”

He shakes his head again and clears his throat before replying. “Aleksi. Aleksi Kesä.”

Oh. His name.

It feels absurd to watch him introduce himself with a name so similar, and yet noticeably different.

“Aleksi Kesä?” She asks, doing her best to mimic his pronunciation. He nods, his movements still slow and cautious, and then in turn points toward her.

That’s the moment Saga loses all hope that he recognizes or remembers her. She feels like strangling Wake in that moment, but for what must be the hundredth time that day, the only thing she can do is play along.

She attempts a smile even though her eyes are welled up with tears and points to herself. “Saga Anderson.”

“Saga.” He copies, and it hurts so bad because even the way he says her name is different. “Oletko amerikkalainen?”

In an anguished decision to fully commit to the act of meeting a stranger, Saga crouches down in front of him in a nonthreatening manner. Up close, she can see him shivering and hear his teeth chatter. Identity crisis aside, the logical side of her brain tells her that this a cold, wet human being who needs to be warmed up before he catches hypothermia.

She forces herself into action mode, unzipping her windbreaker while keeping him talking. “I can’t understand you. Can you understand me?”

The awkward pause that follows is enough of an answer. He does speak up after a few seconds, an apologetic look on his face. He seems a little more calm now. "En osaa englantia."

Saga can make a pretty educated guess as to what that might mean based on the ‘englan’ part. Next, she pointedly takes off her coat, motioning toward his own shirt that’s hanging off his frame.

“You should take that off, I’ll give you my dry jacket.” She tells him. Even if the words don’t mean anything to him, she hopes her comforting tone will help him to trust her, so that she can help him.

Luckily, he seems to get the memo. With a slow nod he starts peeling the drenched shirt away from his skin, struggling when it tries to stick to him. She watches him to see if she can spot any sign of injury, which she thankfully doesn’t.

By the time he’s managed it, she’s already removed her FBI jacket and is holding it out to him as a peace offering.

He takes it from her, but doesn’t put it on. He just stares down at it. Then he runs his fingers along the yellow lettering.

“Saga,” he says, “FBI?”

She nods at him, a little confused. For a moment he looks even more bewildered.

"Ihan niinkuin jossain jenkkileffassa…" he mumbles. Then a dawning look of realization.

He pointedly places a hand onto his chest.

“FBI-” he looks almost hopeful- “mutta sain potkut.”

“Yes! FBI!” She nods again, this time more eagerly. She feels very relieved at the fact that he seems to remember he’s an FBI agent at least. 

“You should put that on.” She continues, gesturing along with the words so he can understand. “Sorry if it’s a little small.”

He gratefully dons the jacket. As expected, the sleeves are short, but it covers enough of him for Saga to be satisfied with her temporary fix. It’s better than nothing before she’s able to think of a better solution.

“Kiitos.” A short pause. “Um… thank you.”

Casey- no, Kesä takes a moment to adjust. His teeth still chatter and his shivers don’t stop, but gradually his breathing evens out. He starts to look around at their surroundings, with various emotions in his expression. 

Confusion. Relief. Awe.

As he turns his head, looking so unlike her partner and best friend, Saga finally lets the tears fall.

“Mitä helvettiä?” = "What the hell?"

“Missä helvetissä minä olen?” = "Where the hell am I?"

"Missä minä olen? Ja kuka helvetti sinä olet?" = "Where am I? And who the hell are you?"

A Rambling First Thoughts Review + Critique of "Peter Pan and Wendy" (Disney+ 2023 movie) Spoilers ahead.

Okay for being called "Peter Pan and Wendy" I think aside from prequel iterations, this movie had the least bit of connection and bonding between Peter and Wendy that I've ever seen.

Wow okay, not even sure where to begin on the rest of my thoughts but certainly that was the first one. I didn't feel much connection between Peter and Wendy at all, and the story had very little justification for the emotional moments between them it tried to eke out, which is actually very difficult to achieve since the original source material has it baked in that all the adaptations, even the ones that twist the formula, have been able to adapt and grow off of.

Oof and I gotta say the movie rushed the beginning to really crawl through Neverland. I was shocked at how fast it was that they were already going, and it didn't really seem like an urgent event. Just like, oh yeah Peter's just gonna show up at your window and take you to Neverland one day kthxbai. Rather than it being a motivated decision for Wendy to say "I'm growing up tomorrow" (leaving the nursery, going away, etc.) but I don't want to, so I'm going to go and never grow up.

Also sidebar, Wendy my love, being an ass to your brothers is not endearing to your plight and is definitely new for this adaptation which was a Very odd take. And it could be argued by the end...or even the middle...she realizes her responsibility to take care of them and look after them in Neverland but that's a weak sauce character arc for someone who HAS one built in that's just as valid.

A really odd take for them NOT to double cast Jude Law as Mr. Darling and Hook. I actually would have liked to see his take on Mr. Darling. But RIP Mr. Darling had barely a personality at all or anything to do here.

And RIP Nurse Nana. Now you are just a dog with nothing to do, and no reason to be put out in the dog house.

And then Neverland, oh my dear place of literal dreams, what they did to you! Now, I am somewhat a fan of the Home Under the Ground being a castle ruin in this version, that's actually something close to how I've seen Neverland at least once. But it felt very empty, both the Home and the island. It was too...empty. And even though every iteration we know only the pirates, Lost Boys, Peter, the Indians, the fairies, and the mermaids live in and around the island, plus animals, all the other versions haven't felt so barren. Is it because Neverland became one large same-y landmass rather than a place that has mountains and lagoons and tropical forests and literally anything children dream of? Maybe that's part of it. But it's hard to place precisely. It doesn't feel lived in. The castle ruins didn't have beds or a table for meals. It had a neat rope swing and a fireplace yes, but it still just looked visually and felt empty, when a badass castle hideout could be so cool!

And regarding Hook and Peter having a history, having a tragic background. First, I'm not opposed to the friends to enemies take. Saw it done pretty well in the prequel special Neverland, though it was from a Fagin+Snape-like mentor to an orphan Peter who looked up to him, rather than two kids and one who grew up. But again, it may have worked with a different story. I don't think it was the right choice here, or at least it was not properly executed. The voice in my head kept saying, if Hook was a lost boy and Peter's friend and he KNEW where Peter's hideout was all along, then WHY hasn't he tried killing him before? The whole sticking point in the source and other adaptations was that he had NO IDEA where Peter's hideout was, otherwise he would kill him there!

Tiger Lily being a badass is never bad in my book, but once again, her service in the story feels unearned. I don't feel the bond between her and Peter, honestly. She had more of a connection with Wendy (and it caught me off guard how I immediately thought, "okay I would ship that" after their conversation en route to the hideout.) And then her tribe is just sort of there. Without much connection to the island, or to Peter. Tiger Lily calls him "Little Brother," but taking the movie as it is without reference of any other Peter Pan media, it doesn't feel earned from what we are given up to that point. It just feels like Tiger Lily being Peter's deus ex Machina, which really historically has been Tinkerbell, and that made sense given Tink and Peter's shared history and friendship. (Something that's also sadly toned back in this movie as well)

"Peter Pan and Wendy" is not even a poor live action adaptation of a Disney animated movie, it's just... a strange and lackluster adaptation of Peter Pan, which had been done successfully as a Disney animated movie. And I think that feels a bit more disappointing.

my fav parts and random thoughts in no particular order after watching AOTV below the cut!

FULL OF SPOILERS (not joking!!)

This is the good stuff, since I can't help being a hater I have Thoughts™️ but I'm going to think about how to correctly articulate them, later on. I don't want to bring the mood down right now. Just want to recap all the amazing parts that stayed with me!

First of all, the most important moment of the 82 minutes: Oli whispering to the camera that Scala was better than any one direction gig. The only thing that matters. Needless to say, it’s fascinating to hear Louis talk and see him too. I loved the footage from the stage - since it’s filmed from behind, we get a whole new perspective from what we saw in the livestreams. He looks so good on stage! He's in his element! He's magnetic!!! I love him.

It's great to see his bandmates featured so much, and to see how the big venues were also important to them, and how they bonded and how Louis is a special person. Also loved his family and his friends being featured. Some parts about his mom were very emotional and I appreciate that they showed a moment in which it's his granddad that cries - as we know it's not often that we see men crying. And I could see so much of Louis in his grandpa, especially the sense of humour. Matt V and Chris can fuck off tho <3

Legend of the Lost Spatula review

(Spoilers)

For a while now, I have wanted to review all of the SpongeBob games. Why? I don’t know, I thought it’d be fun. The first SpongeBob SquarePants game was Legend of the Lost Spatula, released for the Game Boy Color in 2001. SpongeBob did appear in Nicktoons Racing, which released a year before (2000) but that was a crossover game.

I’m not even sure if SpongeBob is the focal point of this image, imagine being hit by a car with CatDog driving.

Anyway, Legend of the Lost Spatula. The game is a 2D platformer and was developed by Vicarious Visions (who later went on to develop Skylanders: Swap Force and some Call of Duty games) and published by THQ. That’s all I could find about the development of this game and I took that info from a Wikipedia page.

The game opens with a “cutscene” of course it’s the Game Boy Color so these cutscenes are just nice pictures of SpongeBob characters captioned with text.

SpongeBob is unicycling around Jellyfish Fields when he stumbles upon a statue of a sponge with a golden spatula on top of a grill. He immediately assumes that Mr. Krabs will know about this, he speaks to Mr. Krabs and sure enough he knows everything about the statue. The statue marks the entrance to the Dutchman’s underworld. “A long time ago, in the city of Palm Bay, there was the master fry cook who ruled with the golden spatula. But Mt. Kabloovious buried Palm Bay starting the grease fires that ended the grease civilization. As legend has it, the Flying Dutchman took over the cities and ruins and his first mate buried the key to the city somewhere in the Goo Lagoon.” What?

There’s also some side quests. Patrick loses his shorts at the carnival, Sandy loses her hat at the desert, somehow? And you have to deliver a Krusty Krab Pizza to somebody in the middle of a jungle being attacked by loads of creatures… If you’re ordering a pizza in the middle of the jungle, you must have a phone with you. Why didn’t he call for help?

Good heavens.

I actually really like how the game’s cutscenes look. In the game itself, yeah the characters don’t look as good. Mermaid Man is one of the whitest people I have ever seen.

If you stay still for a bit, SpongeBob starts dancing.

The gameplay is what you’d expect from a basic 2D platformer, there’s not a lot to say. SpongeBob’s health is measured by his pants. By default he starts off in his square pants. If he’s hit by an enemy once, he’ll lose his square pants and go down to his white undies. If he’s hit again, he’ll lose his underwear as well and be completely naked. This sends you back to either the start of the stage or some random, unmarked, checkpoint. There were several instances where after I lost all my lives I was sent to a checkpoint where there was an enemy right next to me. The enemy would move before I could and I would immediately lose a life.

The levels can be pretty long at times and some can be weirdly difficult. I had to use a walkthrough video for a lot of the game because I didn’t really know where I was supposed to go. A lot of segments looked the same to me and I got lost very easily. In fact one stage had two segments at the start that were the exact same, I have no idea what the point of that was.

There were also at least two levels where I had to jump from one spot to some moving bubble…. thingy on the other side of the stage and almost all of it happened off-screen so I had no idea if I was going to land properly. It took me forever before I eventually did this part of the stage and I still don’t know how I did it.

Another annoying aspect this game has is the items system. At the start of the game the only item you have is a bubble wand. You blow bubbles at enemies, it temporarily stuns them (even the characters with some of the toughest looking sprites in the game for some reason) and then the enemy runs off in the opposite direction. At least that’s what’s supposed to happen in theory, there were multiple instances of the enemy running directly into me after this had happened, which really defeats the point. But anyway, the other items in the game can be found in treasure chests that you find as you make your way through the level. These other items include: SpongeBob’s jellyfishing net Ol' Reliable, the net launcher from “Sandy’s Rocket”, spring shoes which makes SpongeBob jump higher and is required for some of the more difficult points in the game, and a spatula which launches a limited amount of Krabby Patties at enemies to stun them (it can only hold up to 30 patties and you find those patties through treasure chests as well).

A lot of the time you have to switch between these items. For example you might have to use the spring boots to jump up to a platform but when you’re on that platform you might be faced with an enemy and have to use one of your weapons to defeat it. You’d assume that the developers, knowing this would happen, would find an easy way to switch between items. Instead, the item selection screen is hidden away in one of the two pause menus in the game (both available under start and select). Pressing select leads you into a menu and the item selection is the last option in the list for some reason. Once you’ve chosen the item you need, you can then unpause. I’m assuming this is the only way they could do it because doing this repeatedly felt really unnatural to me.

The start menu, however, is where you learn the game uses passwords. Pretty much every time you move slightly the password changes so you’d assume when you reset the game and input the password you’ll be back at the location you were at before. I used two of these passwords and both sent me to a random spot back at the start of the game.

Some levels end with a boss fight and I found some of the boss fights easier than the levels themselves. Except for this weird one where I was fighting some fish who looked like they were from an old western film except their gun was comically replaced with an…

I don’t know.

The idea was you use the spatula to shoot Krabby Patties at them. I had no idea what I was doing for the majority of the fight and accidentally ran out of ammo. I had to start the level from the beginning again.

All of that just to find Sandy’s hat.

Near the end of the game, SpongeBob finds all the “knobs” for an oven. It opens, SpongeBob falls down it somehow and you end up at the final stage of the game. Once you finish the stage you meet the final boss, the Flying Dutchman, who introduces himself by making an… Odd comment.

The boss fight isn’t that difficult if you know what you’re doing, it’s pretty much the same format as the western fish I mentioned earlier, you’re basically just feeding the Flying Dutchman. It ends pretty quickly, with him just… disappearing. You collect the golden spatula and the game just ends abruptly with a few cutscenes explaining what happened. SpongeBob is now the greatest fry cook and Mr. Krabs is making a lot of money.

Legend of the Lost Spatula is… OK? There’s not a lot of content in the game, you can beat it in less than an hour and the world record is 10 minutes and 57 seconds. In fact if it wasn’t for the constant switching between menus, you could probably beat it in even less time. That was the main problem I had with the game. The best part of the game? I guess the weird still images the game uses as cutscenes?

There is no reason to play Legend of the Lost Spatula now, but, in the rare case you want to learn more about the game from someone who has never watched an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, I highly recommend this GameSpot article. In it the author constantly refers to the game as just “SpongeBob SquarePants”, like it’s going to be the only SpongeBob game to ever release, and gets basic details about the characters wrong (including appearing to refer to Mr. Krabs as the “mayor of Bikini Bottom” and refusing to refer to Sandy by name for some reason).

Lagoon : Ah. I’ve done my final maintenance check, and I’m in a good mood.

Adel : There were no problems with the wedding outfits. Since those were made by me, it’s not going to be anything else but the best.

The tailor from a royal guild called Yume Tsumugi, Adel-san was in charge of making the bride and groom’s wedding outfits for the ceremony.

After we had a brief discussion about the ceremony, I left the both of them……

Link : Sometimes after I pulled an all-nighter working as a technician, I almost forgot to switch my hair colour.

Emma : The hair colour you’re wearing right now, it looks different compared to the colour you usually use for live-streaming. You look more matured now.

I did warn you that Black Lagoon is a dark series, a nitty gritty series that actually portrays the darkest aspects of humanity in every sense known to people. I think that is why this series is a favorite for me too.

I know women complain that men can't write female characters, but I think Rei Hiroe proves that he can write every character he created in every series he's done. I should get more involved in his other works.

I haven't had the chance to read the newer chapters.. Mostly because I don't think the site I used to read manga exists anymore, so I'll really have to find another site to read the manga. But! I do know what does happen in the newer chapters because people have posted scenes on here (so be careful of spoilers in the tags, if you hate being spoiled).

The reason why the Roberta's Blood Trail arc was created into an ova instead of a whole season was because there wasn't enough content for a whole season. But there was been two volumes out since then it was released, and now the newest volume comes out in the winter.

And before I forget! The ending for Roberta's Blood Trail is completely difference in the manga then in the anime. In the manga, Roberta has survived with no injures. She's unscathed. But in the anime, she lost a lot of limbs. So if there is ever a possibility that Roberta comes back - in the series, especially the anime - I don't know how they're going to even try pulling that off. So I don't know how to feel about the change between the endings. But I know it might seem more realistic though to give her injures after those events. I don't know to feel about that.

As a short person, part of me enjoyed Fabiola's character too. Like... I need a knives in my shoes too. I would love to have those shoes for all those reasons.

I believe Roberta is supposed to be the strongest character physically which is really obvious when she's introduced. But on the drugs, she's even more inhuman then before. Eating metal isn't normal for anyone at all. And what about her seducing that male soldier? That was dark.

I feel like the characters are more fleshed out when you learn more of and about them. Like in the next arc, that has yet to be animated, will mention more of Revy's past. During her time in prison.

And the relationship between Garcia and Roberta really made me lots more uncomfortable. I know he kissed her, not her kissing him. But.. I was surprised that happen. Like when they're first introduced, it even mentioned that Garcia's mother died was he was a child. So I thought their relationship was Roberta being a maternal figure to him, or even her being a older sister to a younger brother. Since their fathers really were childhood friends from what was mentioned about their pasts. If there relationship is romantic instead of familial, then it completely makes me uncomfortable. So I don't know about that relationship.

I love every character. Shenhua is actually in the next few arcs! And in Frederica Sawyer's spinoff series, there's even more Shenhua content too. Same with Eda's spinoff series. They really need to translate now.

Chang is manipulative prick who manipulated Rock into doing his dirty work, which led Rock into manipulating people into doing his dirty work. After Eda manipulated Chang into doing her dirty work.

Lotton (the stupid man child who lives with Shenhua and Sawyer) is a stupid person. He's an idiot. So calling him "special" is the nicest word Shenhua calls him. He's stupid. But also entertaining in his own way.

I would love to see more Sawyer too. In the main series, not just the spinoff. Same with Eda too. Actually just more female characters.

Janet's character gets fucked over in the next arc. So she'll be back in the next arc, but only for more of cameo scenes anyway. There's that.

And now you know why Revy's the way she is. She was abused by any person in her life, which is why she's a mercenary (and a dominatrix). She needs that control in her life to manage her darker instincts now.

That is why Rock is more considered the antihero type of character in this series now. Because he's in the twilight, he notices the lifestyle of the light and darkness in people. Which I did respect. Until he did this now. And, like you said, Revy sees Rock as her light in life which is the whole slow burning romantic relationship between them. But then he just has to fuck it up by being manipulative about his actions now. So I know he does whatever he can to help people, even if it leads to this darker path, but that is completely fucked up at the same time too. A part of me is interested in dark Rock (because I've always had a deep interest in darker characters like that). But another part of me really is wanting to hurt him for doing those horrible actions to people too. So I'm conflicted about that. I think that's why I enjoyed Yukio confronting him though.. I can respect that he wants to help people in any way he can, but there are different ways to make that happen instead of taking the darker path. Maybe. He died as Rokuro Okajima to live as Rock, that's what happen when he left his life behind in Japan. Revy gave in muliple chances to go back to his old life when they were in Japan, but he rejected every option too. Like he doesn't want to officially give up his old life, but he also won't embrace his new life either. Even if he doesn't kill people with his own hands, he is still able to manipulate people into doing his dirty work (which isn't any better either). Like he's too afraid, too indecisive, to succumb into his new life. Basically what you said. He needs to make up his mind.

But.. the next chapter with Rock... He seems normal again, normal for his character. He doesn't seem like a manipulative person toward the next person he helps. At least from what I've noticed about him.

And the manga does update slowly for a few reasons. Rei Hiroe really does have multiple projects, he works on the project he has the most inspiration for in that moment. So at least he's not rushing into any of the story, which I'm really happy about. And because of his health will come and go a lot, because of his depression. But the newest volume comes out in winter 2023, so hopefully in a few months then. And the most recent volume, twelve, revolves around Dutch's backstory.

I love every character in my opinion. But, in general, I can't pick any favorite characters from the female characters. I really love them all.

There are spinoffs. Well.. Spinoffs series of Eda and Sawyer. But there are also short novels, short stories, for some characters. Like Balalaika and even Shenhua, but I don't think those stories were ever translated either. Because I would have loved to read those stories.

I hope that they continue with the anime though, and also the manga. Definitely one of my main all time favorite series.

it's definitely not a series i expected to get into so much! i'm really glad that you recommended it to me. i've had the opening on repeat for days now and have been rewatching certain scenes a lot lol. usually i don't feel super compelled to read the manga after, but with black lagoon i definitely want to! next time i go out to a manga shop, i'll keep an eye out to see if there are any copies of black lagoon too

roberta's blood trail definitely didn't seem long enough to be a whole season, but i read somewhere that they didn't have to deal with censorship for the ova which was why it was darker than usual. also wow, roberta made it out with no injury in the manga?? that's legit amazing! i think i like the realistic approach in the anime since it's hard to imagine her challenging an entire U.S force without getting hurt, but hmmm, let's see if i'll feel the same after i read it. yeah, roberta and garcia's relationship became gross to me after he kissed her, but i really hope it doesn't go anywhere romantically because i despise age gaps like that

dark rock would be interesting to explore for sure! since we've seen exactly what he is capable of now... and also exploring revy's reaction to seeing her "light" disappear too. it's been hinted at for a while now that revy is stuck in the midnight, but wants a way to step into the twilight, i would love to see if they go anywhere with that. i agree what you've said about rock being manipulative and indecisive, all while lecturing others about their morals, which is really hypocritical of him. i also feel like he is so fearless because he knows that revy will be there to protect him as well, treating her like his weapon. there were times where i felt that he disregards her concerns and does his own things anyway, which made me dislike him more

i really hope someone will translate the short novels and stories, because i NEED to learn about the characters. it's a necessity at this point. i should continue studying japanese so i don't have this problem T_T

Update 2.6.23

I struggled a lot with the ending to my game. I think I mentioned I lost my most recent draft (probably in a notebook somewhere) and so I spent all day Friday re-plotting it. As I said before, I will have to go back and make my demo more cohesive in the long run. Think of it like a first draft.

Anyway, I struggled with my ending. The one I consider canon is more to set up a reveal in another story down the line and it may leave the player unsatisfied... so I decided to make 3 endings. A basic ending (although bittersweet if you know your history, is still happy in general), another ending for completing sidequests (the canon one). The 3rd ending would come from NG+, but sadly this may be scrapped for time, as it’s basically an entirely new experience. Hopefully I can add this way down the line, but for now it’s a darling that must be cut so I can finish this project.

That said, I have that one map for Maras Salt Mines left, but while rewriting my outline I realized I had a few locations out of geographical order, and so the plot and story had to be tweaked to fit this. I don’t recommend doing this as the story probably shouldn’t be changed to fit something sort of arbitrary, but otherwise it would lead to “Why can’t I go here?” for the player as well as the dreaded backtracking and from a gameplay perspective is much more enjoyable to be moving forward to new locations...

And there’s a lot of locations. In fact, I would say maybe 5 major areas aren’t even required for the story, but I wanted to include them for lore reasons. The game is an adventure and exploring will reward you. Just don’t go to an area too early, you might die... This is a feature I loved in old JRPGs, where you could explore fairly freely, but you might die or find something cool. I think this adds to the atmosphere I want to create. Thanks to the BITs System, you could probably grind and make a super OP character to tackle these areas early on, if you want to. That said, the demo is fairly linear, but there is a secret area right after (The Rainbow Mountain and the town of Pisac) that you could attempt to traverse...

I want to map Chinchero today (this is the town before Maras in my game). You will also end up obtaining your first summon nearby at the Twin Lagoons, where Mama Cocha’s temple is located underwater. The dungeon has a theme of twins, mirrors, teamwork... it ties into the subplot of Chinchero. There is a bittersweet ending... Most areas in this game are like that, to tie into the theme of corruption. However, I hope the CAMP system provides more insight to our heroes and I want to add the fishing mini-game in soon. This is the main way you will get fish for dishes like ceviche, but the mini-game is not required.

I try to make things optional, as everyone plays differently. Although, personally, I love fishing mini-games...

Rapunzel and the Lost Lagoon

As soon as I heard about this book, I put it on my birthday wishlist. But alas, my birthday had come and gone. No Lost Lagoon. Apparently my mom didn’t see it on the wishlist, so that’s why. Flash forward to Christmas Day and I held the book in my hands, which were trembling with excitement. Not really, but you get the idea. I had been waiting to devour this book for months on end and I did. So without further ado, I will present to you this handy-dandy post that encapsulates my thoughts on Lost Lagoon before, during, and after reading. I thought it would be fun to record my expectations and compare them to what I discovered. If you’ve read Lost Lagoon, what did you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts! ❤️

honestly, I’m not quite sure what to expect. All I know is that there’s a lot of moments between Raps and Cass and I am ready for them!

Arianna chose Cass to be Raps’ lady-in-waiting. I always wondered how she got the position. I’m loving how many little things this book is explaining 🥰

This is something I feel like should have happened throughout Season 1 but never did (Raps supporting Cass and trusting that she has a good reason for things even if she doesn’t understand)

Dahlia’s definitely shady and so is Marco. I suspected Marie earlier but now I’m not sure. She wasn’t obvious until she was but now she’s not again so maybe she is guilty after all? Either way, Raps is making dumb decisions and I’m over here yelling at her to get her life together before she gets killed or kidnapped (whichever comes first, I guess) 😅🙃

After Reading

so I did get to see how Cass and Raps first met (also how she first met Eugene as well)

I like how they combined their talents and passions at the end to create the map painting

There were a bunch of lines that made me laugh, although there were just as many that hit me like a knife to the chest (pretty much anything angsty from Cass’ POV) so I like how it made me feel all the feels (I felt like an investigator trying to figure out who the bad guy was and that was a blast 😆)

overall it was pretty good. I did feel like the characters were off (Arianna seemed like she swapped personalities with Frederick at times and Eugene apologized for joking Cass- as if!), but other than that I enjoyed it. There were a bunch of new characters being introduced so it was somewhat hard to tell who was bad and who wasn’t but I guessed correctly in the end. I was hoping there would be more than one bad guy but oh well.

I’m glad I read it because now I know a few extra things about Corona and its surrounding countries (plus I can finally read through all the Lost Lagoon related tumblr posts I saved for later... I was waiting until I read the book and here I am!)

Why I Think Goldie O’Gilt Was A Serious Wild Card In Bradford’s Plans To Isolate Scrooge

Ok. Here I’ll be going over why I think Goldie O’Gilt was a serious wild card in Bradford’s plan to isolate Scrooge by explaining how I think Goldie’s relationship with Scrooge works and why I think Goldie is a factor that Bradford simply couldn’t reign in. Also, Spoiler Alert for the DuckTales (2017) TV series. With that out of the way, let’s dive right in.

I think that one of the reasons why Bradford couldn’t keep Scrooge isolated from Goldie is ironically because of how their constant game of cat-and-mouse works and how long they’ve known each other. After all, as shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Goldie and Scrooge still seem to love each other at the end of the day despite all the constant distrust and backstabs and have known each other since during the Klondike Gold Rush which would mean that they’ve known each other for literally more than a century. That would mean that Goldie and Scrooge have more than a century of distrust and backstabs between them but they still love each other despite it all. So, Bradford probably can’t separate Goldie and Scrooge through manipulation since they’ve already seen each other at their worst time and time again but still love each other at the end of the day. Furthermore, Goldie was probably the first person Scrooge formed a bond with since he first began to make his fortune. After all, as stated in the episode ‘The Shadow War! Part 1: The Night Of De Spell!’, Scrooge worked alone way back in the day and the same probably went for Goldie too given that, as stated in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Goldie seemed quite used to stabbing other people in the back. And I think that’s ironically one of the reasons why Goldie and Scrooge fell in love in the first place. Goldie and Scrooge probably saw each other as kindred spirits since they were both loners who wanted to make a fortune. So, another reason why Bradford couldn’t isolate Scrooge from Goldie is because Goldie and Scrooge probably fell in love with each other even though it was a very lonely time in their lives.

Since Bradford couldn’t isolate Scrooge from Goldie through manipulation, he probably tried to have Goldie killed shortly after Della’s disappearance. After all, as revealed in the episode ‘The Last Adventure! Part 3: Tale’s End…’, Bradford told Della about the Spear Of Selene thus causing her to be lost in space which tore Scrooge’s family apart and, as @yoshimickster pointed out in their …so…yeah…Bradford killed Duckworth, didn’t he? post, probably killed Duckworth since Bradford did show a picture of Scrooge mourning Duckworth as he was going over how he tried to isolate him. But killing Goldie was probably easier said than done given that, as shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Goldie was able to get the drop on both Beakley and Webby. And that’s saying a lot considering that, as shown in the episode ‘From The Confidential Casefiles Of Agent 22!’, Beakley and Webby are both highly trained spies. Speaking of Beakley…

Bradford probably tried to get Beakley to double down on her efforts to keep Goldie out of McDuck and thus away from Scrooge. And since, as stated in the episode ‘The First Adventure!’, Beakley recommended Bradford to Scrooge. That probably means that Beakley trusted Bradford enough to take his advice regarding Goldie. Also, as shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Beakley seemed to really dislike Goldie. And I think that makes sense considering that, as shown in the episode ‘From The Confidential Casefiles Of Agent 22!’, Beakley was a spy who worked for SHUSH helping to enforce justice and the law whereas, as also shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Goldie was the polar opposite of that being a master thief and all. But Bradford trying to get Beakley to double down on security to keep Goldie out was probably to no avail given that, as I already pointed out, Goldie was a master thief who was able to get the drop on both Beakley and Webby.

As shown in the episode ‘The Golden Lagoon Of White Agony Plains!’, Scrooge wasn’t all that keen on telling others anything romantic about his relationship with Goldie. And that probably didn’t bode well with Bradford’s plans to isolate Scrooge. After all, given that Scrooge wasn’t quick to share anything about his romantic relationship with Goldie with other people, he probably wasn’t willing to share anything about it with Bradford. This would mean that Bradford wouldn’t have known how to isolate Scrooge and Goldie from each other.
